Jon Halden had the daunting task of opening the Grapevine Stage at Ipswich Music Day - But ever the professional, he did it very well indeed. Jon studied music through all levels of education before starting and running his own music company called ‘Up-beat’ (www.up-beat-tuition.co.uk) which supplies instrumental lessons to school aged pupils but also runs acoustic events (www.jamvan.co.uk) and PA hire with sound engineer. StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.
They say nostalgia isn’t what it used to be but let me assure you that in the case of Suffolk blues band Built For Comfort it most certainly is. Back in the 1990s the Comforts were one of the most popular acts in our region, playing to packed pubs and releasing a tremendous album called Big. My home county had already produced some excellent blues outfits including the Pete Croft Blues Band, Lacey Street Blues Band and The Mean Red Spiders so it didn’t come as any surprise to me when Suffolk came up with another. Taking their name from a Willie Dixon song made famous by Howlin’ Wolf, Built For Comfort soon established themselves on the local circuit. Their first and only album, Big, really did capture the group in all their glory. Recorded over a few days at Purple Rain Studios in Great Yarmouth by Richard Hammerton, the CD remains one of the finest recordings made by a Suffolk band. All twelve tracks on it received an airing on BBC Radio Suffolk recently and for a very good reason. It coincided with five of the eight members of the band who played on that album reconvening for three reunion gigs last month. The Comforts’ comeback was spearheaded by guitarist Adam Clarkson and bassist Kelvin Hill who
somehow managed to pull it all together in only a few months. Adam lives up in Scotland these days and hasn’t played in a group for quite some time. Kelvin has more than kept his hand in though, performing on a pretty regular basis with Blues Situation. Another founder member Mark Stuart also remains an important part of the local music scene and is often seen in The Super Things and Nolan Wiltz’s Homebrew. Those three musicians
Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE
managed to persuade trumpet player Giles Wright and harmonica player/ trumpeter Kevin Wells to dust off their instruments, meaning that the reunion could happen. Sadly, lead singer Mal Brierley has been unwell in recent times and wasn’t able to take part but I’m told he was at the Friday night gig at the John Peel Centre to lend his support. Drummers George Fothergill and Dave Bynoe were also unable to attend, as was harmonica player Dave Wright but they all gave the comeback their blessing and I know would have loved to have been part of the action had they been able to. I couldn’t make the Stowmarket gig but did give the reunion lots of radio coverage in the run-up to the weekend. Kelvin guested on my BBC Re-Introducing show on at 9pm on Wednesday, June 26 and then two days later Adam joined me on my Drivetime show at 6-15pm. If you get in quick you can catch up on those via the BBC Sounds app and website.
August 2019
I did make the Sunday evening gig at The Salutation in Ipswich. Rightly so, the place was packed and it was lovely to see so many local musicians turning out for the occasion. It spoke volumes of how highly Built For Comfort were thought of all those years ago. Special mention must be made of the man who had the unenviable task of filling Mal’s shoes – Scottish based vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Tomlin Leckie. I made a point of congratulating Tomlin on his efforts. He’d obviously gone to a lot of trouble to learn all the material and I was very impressed by how easy he made it sound. Built For Comfort had already secured their place in the history of Suffolk’s music scene and it was lovely to have them back, if only for a weekend. Something tells me it’s not the last we’ll hear from them. They have the bit between the teeth and I don’t think they’ll letting go of it easily.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang flies into Norwich This August, OPEN plays host to the Norwich-based, multi-award winning theatre company Sound Ideas for the second time. The fantasmagorical musical plays this August 6th-11th in a sparkling new production. The latest eye-catching, technically dazzling production from the ambitious local group features a wealth of fabulous costumes, impressive sets and a flying car alongside some of the region’s most talented performers - this is certainly not a show to miss! One of the world’s favourite musicals, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will have audiences of all ages flying high with its mixture of madness, intrigue and exuberance. Featuring the classic songs Toot Sweets, Me Ole Bamboo and Hushabye Mountain.
Can the lovable but whacky inventor, Potts, along with his two children and the gorgeous Truly Scrumptious outwit the bombastic Baron Bomburst who has decreed that all children be banished from his kingdom? What happens when the children are caught and imprisoned with the other youngsters by the evil Childcatcher? Will it all end happily-ever-after? Well, of course it will! Sound Ideas are a fresh and innovative theatre company based in Norwich who formed back in 2013 as part of the Norwich Fringe Festival. They now

produce an exciting season of theatre each year in a variety of venues in and around Norwich. Beginning as a small group of friends with a passion for innovative theatre, crowded around a piano in a friend’s garage - they packed out their first concert, ‘The Obscure Revue’ which spring-boarded work from there on after and has allowed the group to flourish and grow into the fabulous team that they are today. The team has produced a wealth of exciting and engaging productions over the last few years which have been nominated for and have received a variety of awards and accolades including the Dr Frank Bates award for Musical Theatre and Dance at the Norfolk Arts Awards, sponsored by the EDP. In 2016 they took the Norwich theatre scene by storm when they staged the regional premiere of oddball toilet-themed hit Broadway cult musical Urinetown, followed closely by the equally ambitious Christmas production of Stephen Sondheim’s dark spin on fairytales, Into The Woods. 2017 began with an immersive and site-specific production of the dark tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and since then they have produced productions of USHERS: The Front of House Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Singin’ in the Rain and GHOST!
CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG is being staged at OPEN in Norwich from August 6th-11th. 7.30pm nightly (2.30pm additional matinees on the 7th, 10th and 11th), tickets £16-20, booking via www.chittychittybangbang.co.uk (FAMILY TICKETS AVAILABLE)

To Myself, From Myself LONESOME Peterborough based post-rock band Lonesome released this, their debut EP, back in April. Theirs is a very unique take on the genre but, as is common, lyrics are in short supply but the sounds swing from grandiose and ethereal sounds to melodic and soulful. This is a concept album intended to be enjoyed from beginning to end – don’t put it on shuffle!
Ado Perma THEO SAYERS Theo made a name for himself in 2018 hosting
Theo Sayers and Friends at The Blue Moon in Cambridgeshire – a place I must visit one of these days. It was there that he launched Ado Perma at the beginning of July. This is electronic indie pop with a twist of offbeat song writing. This self-produced work is a very pleasant listen, with echoes of something good that I can’t quite put my finger on yet.
Jeremy has taken his time deciding to be a musician and whilst I suspect geoscience pays better, he has a fine career ahead of him with his voice, lyrics & guitar.
Photographs and Memories ALTON WAHLBERG
Runaway Train JEREMY JOHNSON Currently in Suffolk but for how long is anyone’s guess. It has taken Jeremy a while to discover East Anglia from his home town in Worcestershire via Holland and the Himalayas. I am so glad he has! Runaway Train is his latest single and that introduced me to his debut album 32nd Orbit which was released last year. A geoscientist by profession
Alton Wahlberg is a hard-working musician, constantly gigging and above all, passionate about music. I have seen him perform live on a number of occasions, but nothing prepared me for Photographs & Memories. The opening track ‘Under The Lights’ begins with a beautiful string section drawing you in like a mystic siren teasing you to listen to more… and it works. I could easily go through each track extolling its virtues but that would be boring to read. Get yourself a copy from Ginger Dog Records – it is

a collection of some of the most heartfelt songs you are likely to hear.
Blindside CASWELL Made in the Aker HONEY AND THE BEAR I need to explain ‘Aker’ – it is an old East Anglian word meaning ‘turbulent current’, now we both know! John and Lucy’s sound has developed and strengthened in parallel with their personal relationship - they got married last year. They are both firmly rooted in the region in which they live and take an undisguised delight writing about odd, interesting or very personal history. ‘Tin Tin’ about the man who invented the hovercraft, ‘Margaret Catchpole’ the English adventuress who escaped from Ipswich Gaol, ‘Springtime Girl’ – about Lucy’s grandad who planted his wife’s name in daffodils in the garden. Wonderfully produced and featuring Sam Kelly and many of the Lost Boys at various places along the journey. A possible BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner in the making perhaps?
Now based in Suffolk, London born Caswell has one of the most beautiful voices we have heard recently – and we hear a lot. What is it about human relationships that generates such great music – and destructive relationships too? For that is how this album came about. This is more a becoming aware album than coming of age and you can almost feel the angst in the lyrics – particularly the way the word ‘stay’ lingers in ‘Stay The Night’. Seek it out on the Grapevine Spotify Playlist (the link is on the front page of the website!)

same line of a song, but Emila Quinn manages that in the opening track ‘Sorry Momma’. This, all too short, three track EP gives us just a small hint of what this young woman is capable of with the sort of hearton-her-sleeves lyrics that I love. The title track ‘Wrote Off’ highlights Emila’s strong vocal capability – to the point where you almost don’t want any other instruments!
British Classics JACK THE LAD Who said punk was dead? Punk never died and this album proves it. Jack The Lad’s debut album of original punchy, aggressive, adult angst ridden songs are in the classic British style of the heady days of the 70’s. Released and distributed on Step 1 Music this album is a must for punk fans around the country not just for the band’s already considerable following in East Anglia. My current favourite track is ‘Who Wants To Rule The World’ with the line: “Who wants to rule the world and walk all over you? Not me and you!”

In the spotlight for this month, after briefly teasing their upcoming autumn season last month and following their recent renovation and upcoming new ownership, I’m introducing you to the Peterborough New Theatre. The theatre itself has a rich history, as it began life as an Odeon cinema in 1937, designed by architect Harry Weedon; and the building was one of the original cinemas of the Odeon chain. It sadly closed as a cinema in 1991, but in 2001 the building went under redevelopment, and reopened as The Broadway Theatre (which has now been renamed to the Peterborough New Theatre). A platform stage was built within the original proscenium and the original Art Deco interior of the auditorium restored, and the auditorium is now one of the finest interiors remaining from the original
Odeon cinema chain. With a seated capacity of 1,140 - it’s one of the largest venues in the region and is capable of hosting national touring plays, theatre productions, music, comedy and films. The late Peterborough philanthropist Peter Boizot (founder of the Pizza Express chain) spent £9m of his own money to recreate the beautiful building as a cornerstone of cultural life in the city. Currently, The Dawe Charitable Trust has invested £1m to make the Peterborough New Theatre central to the life of all Peterborough’s communities, and the theatre welcomes performers, promoters and audiences from any and every community. However, the theatre can only be strong when the people of Peterborough and surrounding areas work with it. It needs YOU to support it; be it through being a

volunteer, financially by hiring it, or most importantly by simply attending shows as a member of the audience. The same goes for any venue, which is why our magazine is so passionate about promoting Live Entertainment and encouraging people to get out there and keep it live; but naturally it’s incredibly difficult when you’re trying to get off the ground and running as a new venue – so this place needs your support. However, with Selladoor Worldwide taking over management of the theatre from 1st September 2019, the theatre is hoping for a bright future. It’s already off to a strong start with an exciting launch of Edinburgh Fringe Festival comedy previews, titled ‘PETERBURGH FRINGE!’ that took place in July, and coming up on Thursday 15th August, the legendary Motown band THE FOUR TOPS are performing live in their only UK Theatre show. As mentioned previously, their upcoming autumn season features an eclectic mix of shows – from family shows, comedies, dramas, tribute shows and more. A few highlights include theatre shows of the classic comedy Boeing Boeing (21-23 November) starring Tom Lister and Daniel

Casey. Families can relive the classic film on-stage with Madagascar The Musical (2nd-6th October). Adults can laugh their troubles away with Avenue Q (24-28th September). Martin Shaw leads in new tour of Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight (21-26th October). Tributes include We Love Little Mix, A Beautiful Noise (Neil Diamond), Big Girls Don’t Cry (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) and Christmas With Ultimate Bublé. There’s live music from the likes of the legendary Lulu, popular male group Blake with their Christmas special and Crackers & Coward with West End performer Ben Stock. Rounding off the year will be the classic Panto of The Wizard of Oz (14-31st December), with Strictly Champion Kayta Jones. All this and it’s only just the start, as the theatre continues with more exciting events in 2020. There is certainly something for everyone, so be sure to check out newtheatre-peterborough.com for further details and the full list of shows.
