CoverSTAR

Adorning our cover this month are Pink Lemonade, a young trio from Norwich playing their own brand of pop, punk and mascara! Maddie, Frankie and Rhiannon are hugely inspired by the effect Madonna has had on the revolution of popular music showing that even in a male dominated industry there is a gap in the market to shine not only as female artists but as musicians too. StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

They (whoever they may be) say that 60 is the new 40 and having recently reached 60 I’m not going to argue with them. It certainly doesn’t seem 39 years ago I was celebrating my 21st birthday with a whiskey-fuelled party which left me with the mother of all hang-overs. I vowed never to touch Scotch again and so far I’ve managed to stick to my guns! Once bitten, twice shy and all that. It’s no secret that Dr Feelgood are my favourite band and since the mid-1980s I have promoted most of their gigs in Ipswich along with a few more in other places. The first time I put them on in town was back in 1985 in the now demolished main hall of what was then the Civic College in Ipswich. Having been lucky enough to meet and interview lead singer Lee Brilleaux down in Leigh-on-Sea a few months earlier, I suggested to the band’s manager Chris Fenwick that I sort a show for them in Suffolk’s county town. I can’t tell you how proud I was to make that

happen with help from my good friend Chris ‘Boot’ Seed. Since then I’ve been involved in gigs of theirs at the Corn Exchange, the Lion’s Den, the Manor Ballroom, Ipswich Music Day and most recently their Christmas shows at Venue 77. The current line-up did me proud back in 1999 when they played at my 40th birthday bash. It was one of singer Robert Kane’s first gigs with them which means the modern day Feelgoods are celebrating 20 years together. A few weeks back, on Friday November 1 to be precise, Messrs Kane, Mitchell, Morris and Walwyn, ticked off another Ipswich venue when they did the honours for me at my 60th bash at Greshams on the edge of town. They even asked me to choose some of my favourite songs. I threw them a curve ball towards the end when I suggested they finish with Johnny B Goode. They hadn’t played that particular Chuck Berry classic for some

time but they came up trumps, as I knew they would. This month the group will be making a quick return to Ipswich to do their annual festive gig at Venue 77, at the back of the Gardeners Arms pub in Fore Hamlet. The boys are back in town on Wednesday, December 18 and advance tickets are available from the usual outlets – the Regent Theatre box office, Out Of Time Records and the Gardeners Arms bar. They’re £18 beforehand or £22 on the night. As ever, I’ve lined up a great local band to open proceedings. This year it’s the bluesrock trio Hot Tramp who’re celebrating the release a new EP. I rate the group very highly and when they supported Dr Feelgood at the same place a few years back many people commented to me just how good they thought Hot Tramp were. Dr Feelgood’s Christmas shows in Ipswich are legendary. From the Lee Brilleaux days right the way through to the Robert Kane years Canvey’s finest rhythm and blues band have always guaranteed a great night out. Long may they continue to do so. For me and many others their much anticipated appearance in my hometown signals the start of the festive season. If you can’t make the Ipswich gig then five days earlier Dr Feelgood play at the Junction in Cambridge. Another regular date in my diary is the New Year’s Eve Hootenanny organised by Greg Cooper of Beer And Co. It’ll be the 4th one at the end of this month and this time round the marvellous MotherFvnker are helping us see in 2020. Fronted by Vania Lima this group will be spreading the funk at St Peters in Ipswich. I’ll be hosting the night’s proceedings which also feature popular DJ Daniel Lee Harvey and an emerging act handpicked by GrapevineLIVE. Have a wonderful Christmas and my very best wishes for 2020.

Hayley Goldsmith

A young female trio from Norwich playing their own pop-punk tracks are making waves wherever they perform, Hayley Goldsmith catches up with them. Who’s Who: Maddie Soan (MS) – Bass/Lead Vocals Frankie Soan (FS) – Drums/Backing Vocals Rhiannon Harris (RH) – Guitar/Backing Vocals HG: Let’s begin with you telling us how you got together and decided to start a band. What’s the story? FS: It was Maddie who had the idea of starting a band, and I was on board straight away. We met our bestie Rhiannon through university, and she just so happened to play guitar and had the same musical interests as us. We met up for a first rehearsal just for fun really, and it went from there! Pink Lemonade was born. HG: Who are your influences? RH: As a group it’s Bowling For Soup, Blink-182, McFly, Patent Pending, All Time Low, Avril Lavigne - All the pop and pop-punk classics. My biggest musical inspiration is the band Queen. Their strong and powerful sound can be traced back to classical music and they’ve had a huge impact on the development of rock music. HG: How did you choose the band name and what others were on the short list? PL: We wanted to choose a name pretty quickly so we could get out into the big wide world. We

started by brain storming ideas and then calling ourselves by one of them until we were happy. It was a total coincidence that James Bay released a song titled Pink Lemonade right after we settled on that. The other ideas must’ve been rubbish because we can’t even remember any of them! HG: Did you always know what type of music you wanted to write/perform, or did you have lots of discussions & try out different things? FS: We were all really keen on writing pop-punk music as this is a genre we all enjoy. I think it’s only recently we have really started to find our sound and are writing songs we are all super pleased with! HG: Which song do you most like to perform, and why? FS: My favourite song to perform is ‘Rewind’, it’s one of our latest songs and will be on our upcoming EP. It’s upbeat, fun, and I enjoy the backing vocals ‘oh my gosh!’. HG: What made you choose your current instruments? FS: I played the drums on guitar hero and I just really enjoyed it so started having lessons on a real kit! HG: Do any of you play other instruments? RH: I began learning classical piano at the age of 5 and passed my grade 8 with distinction last year. I started learning rock guitar at the age of 10 and now enjoy performing, composing and teaching both instruments. MS: I play acoustic guitar as well as the bass, mostly finger style. I had a few lessons on the double bass too and flute when I was younger.

Find us on Instagram: GrapevineLIVE December 2019 9 HG: What’s your song writing process? Who does in his dining room! He kindly lets us keep all our gear what, ie one do the lyrics and one the melody, or is stored in there. Thanks Petey! it joint? Tell us how it works: HG: Where is the furthest you have travelled for a MS: The songwriting process for us that produces the best results, is if one of us brings a musical idea to a rehearsal. This could be a chord progression, a riff, a theme or hook line. We then all expand on that until the song is completed, lyrics work best when we all contribute and tell a story. Generally, we will each write our own parts (eg. Frankie writes the drums, Maddie the bass line/melody, Rhiannon the lead guitar etc). HG: Do you remember your first gig? Were you nervous and did it go well? PL: Our first Pink Lemonade gig was an open mic night at our uni in The Academy (which sadly no longer exists). We had only been a band for a few weeks with two original songs, but somehow headlined the night. We think it went well as people shouted for an encore - the only other song we knew was New Rules by Dua Lipa haha. HG: Who styles you? PL: We do! Pink and punky is the go to. HG: What was it like to release your first single? PL: We found it super exciting to release our first single. A lot of hard work went into it, but it was really fun and we received a positive response.

gig? And how do you travel to a gig...I imagine you all in a pink beetle... FS: Although Rhiannon could not make it, Pink Lemonade have actually performed in New Jersey, USA! Maddie and I did a semester abroad in 2018. We always travel by car, I would love a pink one some day! But for the time being, I have kitted out my silver Ford Fusion in pink accessories. HG: What artist/group would you like to support? PL: McFly! We’ve all been fans of them since we were young. Maddie still has her tour t-shirt from 2006! HG: If you could choose any singer/musician to join the band for one gig, who would it be? PL: Avril Lavigne, she’s a pop punk princess. HG: What challenges are there being a girl band? MS: There are sooo many! I think the main one being we are always underestimated and undermined as musicians. People never expect much from us in that department. They presume that because we are girls (or because we’re young, or a combination of both), we must all be vocalists or not very good at our instruments. We have to work extra hard to be just as good as a male band.

HG: Are you at college/studying?

HG: Do you all get on, really?

PL: Maddie and Frankie are currently in their third year at Anglia Ruskin University studying Music and Performing Arts. Rhiannon has recently graduated with a first class degree in music and is now training to be a music teacher.

HG: You have been the Audience Choice at the NMG Awards for 2 years in a row – how does that make you feel?

HG: When you are not making music, what hobbies do you enjoy? MS: I’m lucky in that music was always my hobby but now I get to do it in my studies and in a slightly more professional sense. I don’t have time for anything else!

PL: YES! Really well.

PL: It feels so amazing to know we have lots of people supporting us. We never expected to win it once, so twice is awesome. HG: What are your dreams/ambitions for the band?

HG: When you become famous, what will your rider be?

MS: I think like most musicians, we would love to just be able to make a living out of being in the band. We love songwriting, recording and performing together and if we could do that for a job, that’d be a dream come true!

PL: Pizza and ice cream!!

HG: When is your next gig or release?

HG: What’s your party trick? PL: Rhiannon can play ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ by The Darkness on guitar behind her head, wowie! HG: How often do you get to practice together?

PL: We don’t have an official date just yet, but are releasing an EP (hopefully before Christmas) along with our debut music video. Our next gig is supporting Vistas at the Waterfront, Norwich later this month. Our Facebook is the best place to keep up with our gig dates.

PL: We try to rehearse together weekly but sometimes less if we have more than one gig in a week. It can sometimes be difficult fitting it in while we are all studying and working part time too.

HG: Where do you practice?

- PinkLemonadeHQ

MS: We practice at mine and Frankie’s dads house,

Suffolk youth orchestra 2019 Tour Diary Anton Avis The anticipation of this year’s tour to Italy rose high as coaches were loaded and instruments and passports were checked. Naturally, a violinist (who shall remain nameless) had the classic disappearing passport scare. After that was resolved, a resounding cheer gripped the coach as we departed. The journey was extremely comfortable. The historically notorious air conditioning worked delightfully and in no time at all, we were on the ferry indulging in overpriced cuisine from their kitchens. Once in Calais, we pushed on towards the Belgian border and travelled through to Luxembourg. Soon enough, we pulled in at a service station in Luxembourg to eat dinner. Unsure of the local language French, German and everything in between was spoken to the cashier’s but somehow the linguistic barrier was overcome. Once satisfied, we were back on the road testing the possibility of sleep. When we woke on day two many of us were stunned. While we’d slept, the coach drivers had worked hard, and we had crossed the Swiss border. The beauty of Switzerland is not something that can be expressed using any degree of vocabulary and the natural beauty was truly extraordinary. After taking some excellent (and some truly awful) photos, we crossed the border into Italy and the city of Forli was now within our grasp. A few hours later we made it to the hotel, the architectural grandeur of which took our breath away. We found our rooms to be exceptionally well presented and

rather suave. The view was stunning. Most peculiarly, the hotel possessed a rooftop swimming pool and yet another astounding view of Italy. The hotel welcomed us with highly delectable Italian cuisine, and we went to bed feeling heavily satisfied. Waking early, breakfast did not cease to amaze; row upon row of pastries and meats and fruits lay before us to fuel a busy day. After a brief coach journey, we arrived in Cesena. With exceptional teamwork, the venue was set up and ready for rehearsal. The natural resonance of the venue improved the sound of the orchestra and under the masterful direction of our two conductors, we were concert ready in no time. The concert was a triumph. We sounded tight and together and were received with tumultuous applause. Our first concert of the tour went without a hitch and left the orchestra and staff elated and proud. Our hard work had without doubt payed off on the stage.

Find us on Instagram: GrapevineLIVE

Our next concert took place in the picturesque town of Ravenna. Ravenna is beautiful with narrow streets and an air of delightful charm about it. When we returned to the venue, setting up was once again swift and decisive due to the admirable cooperative spirit embodied by the orchestra. When we were done with running the repertoire, we walked on to the restaurant before the performance. Halfway through the concert, my music stand collapsed, and a very kind gentleman emerged from the audience to put it back up. When we finished, we received a standing ovation which left us feeling ecstatic. Thanks to the exceptional lead of the conductors, the concert was another grand success. Day five was destined to be busy. Not only was there a concert in the evening, but we had to change hotels too. Rehearsal went well, despite a peculiarly placed statue of Jesus hanging over our heads listening to the sweet sounds of Verdi and Gershwin. The concert sounded superb. It was somewhat emotional for it would be the last time ever we were to play Gershwin’s American in Paris and Verdi’s Nabucco Overture. As send offs go, this was fitting for we played them to an exceptional standard and were gifted another standing ovation by the audience. Three amazing concerts down; one to go. Ready for our last concert, we left for Orvieto. The journey took an hour or so. When we got there, the heat was more intense than previous places, the

scenery more striking and the buildings more classical. Following a lengthy walk, we could not miss the colossal bulk of the Cathedral. Even from a distance the building towered over us and its surroundings, making them all appear to be minuscule. As we went inside we were all stunned by the magnificent architectural feat that this was. Not only was the sheer size impressive, but stone windows and great depth to the church were extraordinary. While we set up we became extremely optimistic for the concert; even sneezing sounded unbelievably good. Rehearsals went exceedingly well and further reinforced the good feeling. Even a venue of this size was packed full. Each piece sounded brilliant and the concert went down a storm with the audience who gave us another standing ovation and the perfect end to an absolutely wonderful tour. Musically, the orchestra was arguably the best it has ever sounded and played to a level well beyond what any of us could have imagined. Still feeling elated we traversed through Orvieto and ate dinner at another great restaurant. In high spirits parties were thrown on the coaches and many songs by Queen and the Village People and other 80s bands were blasted out loudly on the way back to the hotel. Even the staff were singing. What an incredible way to end a truly exceptional music tour. Come and sing with Suffolk Youth Choir! Suitable for secondary-age singers, the all-new Suffolk Youth Choir are working towards their inaugural performance at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on 7 April 2020. They will perform the iconic choral work Carmina Burana, accompanied by Suffolk Youth Orchestra and directed by Ben Parry! Sign up today to take part in this amazing opportunity! from a singer songwriter who proves that putting people neatly in genre labelled boxes is just a bad habit. OK, as I write Hard Time is playing – Norfolk does Katzenjammer...

Fool – something about the presentation of the lyrics makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Tilly now lives in Liverpool but her album launch took place back where we met, at the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket.

Comeback Queen SAM COE Sam Coe was last month’s Grapevine CoverSTAR and has just launched Comeback Queen, her first solo album without the Long Shadows in tow. Moving away from the country sound she is best known for this is Sam’s opportunity to do her own thing. Case in point Devin Don’t Care… pure country to begin with but a song of two parts mixing anthemic pop with auctioneer speed lyrics. In The Moments with its dominant slow piano intro and husky vocals builds slowly to one of those songs crying out to have a musical written around it! Concrete is pure Honky Tonk and at this rate I’m just going to list all the songs, and you know how I hate lists! Go treat yourself to this excellent piece of work

If I Could Gather All The Songbirds TILLY MOSES Can it really be eight years since I first came across Tilly at The John Peel Centre? In those years I have merely grown older. Tilly however has transformed from girl to woman, her music too has matured. This is just Tilly’s second studio album and by her own admission it reflects the fact that she has grown up. The flagship single Rot & Ruin depicting the disability that haunts her is suitably haunting and very celtic, evoking memories of early Clannad. Little Bird is such a beautiful song for a daughter to write for her Mum, but for me the stand out track is No-One’s

Confessions Vol I & II FISHER & THE FERRYMEN This is a band that were new to me until recently. I came across them at one of the most excellent TMT gigs run by Epic Studios in Norwich. Fronted by Norfolk based John Fisher, this set of two sister albums is a debut set for the band released in August. Well, if you have 22 songs worth recording why not produce what used to be referred to as a double album back in the day! But unlike double albums, they can be purchased separately. The tracks are a mixture of blues and rock with a hint of country.

From Vol 1 my favourite is Midnight Sky but my favourite of all comes from Vol 2 – Veil of Darkness is one of those tracks crying out to be played at 11!

single Better Man. This is an uplifting disco infused sound created by three brothers Dan, Reece and Luke who are appearing at Craig Charles Funky Christmas Party in London on 7 Dec… I may have to travel to the city that weekend… Mole Country FISHCLAW

Family Mammal GAFFA TAPE SANDY In truth I got a bit fed up reading Gaffa Tape Sandy’s excellent reviews – then I saw them play live and, you know what, it was all true! They are good, no doubt about it. Family Mammal calls itself an EP but with eight tracks it falls into is it/ is it not an album territory – the intro to Beehive sums it up perfectly: Banging Tunes! Its pop, its punk, its indie – above all its fresh. Headlights is my current favourite lyrics wise whilst So Dry gets my vote for tune of the album… or is it Kill The Chord? Catch the band live in Bury St Edmunds (7 Dec), Cambridge (12 Dec), Colchester (14 Dec) or Norwich (15 Dec) – just go to GrapevineLIVE/ performers to see where your favourite band are playing.

And now for a band I have yet to see live. A Suffolk / Essex collective of seven musicians who, for sake of geographical ease, call Colchester home. Is there such as genre as folk/punk/ jazz/synth/improv? A lot of bands take folk and rock it up but Fishclaw are doing nothing like that – think twice before booking them for your local folk club unless your members are very open minded! The Loula Yorke YSM remix of Mole Country is insane – I love it!

Ellie Dixon PRESSURE I have to own up, first time I saw this woman perform live it was one of those WOW moments. She is deserving of her Best Female Solo Awards at the NMG awards in 2017 and 2018. I make no apologies for featuring her music again in MtyE. Pressure is her latest single – I’m hearing a female Ed Sheeran here and hope she becomes even half as successful, she deserves to.

Rayowa BETTER MAN Because of my connection with a recording studio in London I came across Essex based Rayowa and their funkilicious debut

I always try to somehow top seeing even more theatre than I did the year before, and 2019 has possibly been one of my biggest years for theatre yet. I have lost count of how many shows I’ve seen, from plays to cabarets to West End and touring/ regional musicals, I’ve loved the variety of brilliant theatre I’ve been fortunate enough to see. But alas, we’ll be in a new year of exciting theatre before we know it so I thought I’d highlight some to watch out for in 2020 across Suffolk. Ipswich’s New Wolsey Theatre is always one of my most anticipated season reveals because I admire their passion for supporting diversity, new writing and the unique. We’re fortunate to be getting Once twice! The tale of the busker and the dreamer that captured hearts in the 2019 Spring Season has managed to be getting a 2020 tour with this

production, including a quick stint here from 24-29th February. If you missed it last time, don’t let it slip away this time. If you saw it and fell in love, then see it again. I sure will be! For 2020 at the New Wolsey there seems to be a theme of classics - though perhaps with a little reinvention. Ramps On The Moon are presenting a bold, brutal and beautiful new version of Oliver Twist (25 Mar – 4 Apr) in a play adaptation of the Dickens’ classic by Bryony Lavery. Battles, murder, ghosts, and desire are strong themes in the beloved Shakespeare play Macbeth (17-21 Mar) and this Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch partnership with the National Theatre directed by Douglas Rintoul is sure to bring a great night of thrills. Micheal Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful (21-25 Apr) receives its professional premiere in this new ensemble-version adapted by

Priscilla Queen of the Desert Simon Reade. It tells the story of a young country lad (Private “Tommo” Peaceful) fighting a war he doesn’t understand for people he cannot respect. Not yet a classic, but equally exciting, Burke & Hare (13-30th May) sounds most intriguing. Originally created by Jenny Wren Productions and first produced by The Watermill Theatre, this is a new version by Tom Wentworth – and the poster simply reads ‘A Murderous Musical Romp’. I don’t know about you, but I’m sold. The Ipswich Regent has had a great mix of theatre in 2019, and amidst their program of music, comedy, dance and opera, they are still set to showcase a few theatre shows in 2020. The glitz and glam of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (23-28 Mar) is bound to be a great (and camp!) night out. We Will Rock You (29 Jun-4 Jul) sold out so quickly this year, that they’ve decided to come back! For one night only, the US-hit show Friends The Musical Parody (16 Apr) stops by, and if you’re a fan of the beloved series it’s bound to be an interesting nights entertainment. The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is another to always have a great mix of shows – and straight after Panto they get the return of one of

my favourite shows, Showstopper! The Improvised Musical (24-25 Jan). If you love theatre, I strongly urge you to check out these guys as their work is both genius and hilarious. Oliver Twist (9-11 Apr) sees another regional and reimagined outing with the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds Young Company production. Three married couples, three kitchens, three Christmas parties; London Classic Theatre’s take on Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular (28 Apr-2 May) is bound to bring in a few laughs. Other highlights include community productions of Chicago (31 Mar-4 Apr, Irving Stage) and Annie (12-16 May, BSEAODS) to name a few. It’s impossible to cover it all, but I think that’s plenty for you to be chomping on for now. I hope you all have a fabulous festive season, and if you return in January, I’ll be covering season highlights across our other regions.
