If we could, we would have gotten all eleven of our Ipswich Music Day performers together for a big photoshoot, but have you ever tried getting eleven musicians together in the same place at the same time? Instead all the names went into a hat and out came Brooke Telling. Brooke is a 19 year old acoustic singer / songwriter hailing from the wilds of East Anglia. Borrowing influence from the likes of Kaleo, Brandi Carlile, The Lumineers, and Johnny Cash, Brooke is now regularly performing at open mic nights, music venues and festivals across the county. Brooke performs on the Grapevine stage at 1pm on Sunday 7th July at Ipswich Music Day.

StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.
There’s plenty of food for thought after the recent StowBlues festival. The now firmly established annual event at the Museum of East Anglian Life took place last month and while it did attract several hundred people numbers were down on previous years. There were a few factors behind the drop in attendance, not least the wet weather which didn’t really clear until teatime, by which time many had decided to give StowBlues a miss for this year. There was also a free family music day at Stowmarket Town Football Club happening on the same day which can’t have helped either cause. I’m far from convinced a town the size of Stowmarket can successfully hold two open air music events at the same time and see little to gain in running both sideby-side in future. Some StowBlues regulars may have found the price hike to £15 too
Blues Situation
much to stomach but as I pointed out previously in this column that is still an small price to pay for seven great acts. There was a time when StowBlues was a free event and the bands played for nothing, but that arrangement became unsustainable for a variety of reasons which I won’t bore you with here. On a more positive note StowBlues 2019 was still a success. Legendary Essex rhythm and blues band Automatic Slim were, for me, the group of the day very closely followed by the Dave Thomas Blues Band. Slim are now sounding even better than they did in their pomp and I’d urge you to catch them at The Railway in Ipswich when they return there on Saturday, September 6. The following month they’re at Kelvedon Labour Club (26/10) and then on Saturday, November 30 perform their final reunion gig of 2019 at The Queen’s Head in Burnham-on-Crouch. Thanks to all the acts who graced the new site for StowBlues. The set up behind Abbott’s Hall was excellent and bodes well for the future. Sadly one of my StowBlues co-founders, Patsy Cane, is bowing out so my sincere thanks and very best wishes to her. Over the coming weeks on my BBC Radio Suffolk show I plan to bring you highlights

of the performances by all the artists who also included Goofa Dust, Mark Harrison, Ben Joseph, Blues Situation and Lee Ainley’s Blues Storm.
Phil Jackson It’s not often a local musician publishes a book so it’s great to see Ipswich-based singer, songwriter and pianist Phil Jackson (pictured above) putting pen to paper to do just that. In recent years he has become a key member of The Rutles and Phil’s first publication, Socks On (Life As A Rutle), is a diary covering the group’s 2018 jaunt around the UK. Phil has come up with an amusing read which tells of life on the road as part of Neil Innes’s zany pop combo. It doesn’t come as any surprise to me that being on tour is far from glamorous. The gigs themselves are usually great fun but getting to them, setting up the gear (musical equipment, not drugs!), tucking into the ‘hospitality’ and then packing up and heading off to the next destination can certainly test any musician’s patience and resolve. Knowing Phil as I do, I feel sure he remains good natured throughout and is able to laugh off any of the nonsense often associated with life on the road. He’s clearly lapping up his time as a Rutle and is only too happy to take the rough with the smooth. Do check out Socks On (Life As A Rutle) and also look out for Phil’s latest solo album.

Join grapevine on the lawn Rain or shine, we’ve got music covered
We’ve been part of Ipswich Music Day in one shape or form since it began twenty-five plus years ago, most recently with our very own stage. This year we have eleven amazing guests performing for you on the lawn of Christchurch Mansion, which is fast becoming the preferred home of the Grapevine acoustic stage - right by the Soane Street entrance to the park. Come say hello to the Grapevine team, stay awhile and listen to some amazing music.

Now well-established as the ‘go to’ folk festival in the region, FolkEast returns to the plains of Eastfolk for another year from 16th to 18th August. I have long since referred to the Glemham Estate as Eastfolk for the simple reason that for those three days in August it is as if another county has sprung up – sandwiched between the north folk and the south folk and welcoming folk from all over.
Year, Karine Polwart will bring Friday night to a close on the main stage. On Saturday, Irish songstress Cara Dillon and her friends will close the day whilst on Sunday folk legend Richard Thompson will perform a solo set. That is but the tip of the iceberg and just The Sunset Stage. There is also the Soapbox Stage hidden deep in the woods, the Broadroots Stage, the Moot Hall – there is even a village hall!
What Becky & John Marshall-Potter have created at Glemham Hall is very special and is about far more than music alone. It is about the heritage of our region, the industry, the land, the sea, the stories, the art, oh yes – and the songs.
If you have been to FolkEast you won’t need any recommendation from me to return. If you’ve never been I would highly recommend it, you are unlikely to find another festival like it.
It is not the sort of festival that when you get there you rush up to the crowd barrier in front of the main stage and stay there until the headline act appears. It is more a village you meander through bumping into old friends, making new ones and discovering that the bloke beside you in the beer tent IS the headline act! Above all there is space. No matter how many people attend there always seems to be space to do whatever you want. You can always find a quiet corner to doze, to write, to paint, to play or just to people watch. Then, when the mood takes you, head off to a ceilidh and dance the night away. But it would be remiss of me to ignore the music altogether, for there is a fine line-up of acts waiting to entertain you. The 2018 BBC2 Folk Singer of the

Chris Amoo The Real Thing
Tony Bell talks with Chris Amoo, founding member of 70s soul sensations: The Real Thing. I have a confession to make Chris, you and I are of a similar age, when I was disco-ing back in the day I always thought that The Real Thing were an American band. Yeah - you wouldn’t be alone in thinking we were an American band. We used to get that a lot, a lot of people though we were American until they heard us talking. I suppose its because accents don’t really come across when you are singing our type of music. If you listen to The Beatles sing, you can tell they are from Liverpool, because they sing with that accent - it was Mersey pop, all of the bands around us back then sang, basically the way they talk. So how come you ended up going down the soul route? Because we are black, that’s what we grew up on, black music. We grew up in Liverpool 8, a black district. Was Britain ready for soul in the seventies? No. They became more ready when Motown broke, but it was still very much hit and miss. Soul really started to come into its own, I would say, early seventies with bands like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The O’Jays and bands like that. That’s when it started to generate its own fan base. You went from The Sophisticated Soul Brothers to Vocal Perfection to The Real Thing - you were on Opportunity Knocks,
Top of the Pops... it must have been a crazy time? It was great, we were very young. Anything like that was a great buzz for us, we were only kids. Sophisticated Soul Brothers was our first name, the Vocal Perfection, which we weren’t we soon got rid of that! When we won Opportunity Knocks, it was when we met our manager Tony Hall, we actually went on Opportunity Knocks as Vocal Perfection and came off it as The Real Thing. Nowadays that sort of branding change would be unheard of, wouldn’t it? It didn’t matter back then because basically we weren’t anything anyway, so it didn’t mater how many name changes you had - the name that mattered was the name that was on the record when it was a hit. And what was it like when you got that first hit? Unbelievable, as you can imagine. It was a dream come true. We’d been goin’ a few years before that so that we were building up to that but we never thought... look, most people in our business do not get a sniff of a hit record, that’s what you got to realise. They might be great musicians, and there are great singers that never come anywhere close - that’s how lucky we were. And we are still lucky now. Luck involves a couple of things, first of all having the right song, but you

can even have the right song with the wrong manager or the wrong company. I think “Can’t Get by Without You” was released a couple of years before we actually recorded the song when it went straight to number two! Fast forward to today, sadly you lost your brother Eddie last year, but you decided to carry on as The Real Thing. We did, we just decided that we’d rather keep the original Real Thing rather than bring somebody else in and changing the sound. And it has gone really well as a result of that. I think people appreciate that all that is really missing is a voice and a lovely, popular person obviously. But if you bring somebody else in it becomes something else. The tour list at the moment consists of over forty gigs between now and December - that’s gotta be crazy? Yes! But we have always been a working band, that’s how we started, that’s how we’ve always been right the way through everything. I think being a working band is what makes you. Number one you learn how to perform, number two nothing can phase you audience wise ‘cause you are used to that number three your voice improves over the years. As you continue to do

something, you hone your craft, your voice develops a tone, it gets stronger. Tell us about the show, what can the audience expect? They will get a mixture of our hits, some new original songs and one or two classics in there. They will be able to get up and dance and sing along and sit down to listen to songs lie “Children of the Ghetto” and things like that. And generally just have a nice evening. The Real Thing play the following dates in our region: • Sat 5th July - Southend, Cliffs Pavilion • Sun 21st July - Felixstowe, Spa Pavilion • Fri 11th Oct - Gt Yarmouth, Vauxhall Holiday Park • Fri 25th Oct - Peterborough, East of England Showground

The festival opens on a summer’s evening with the forty musicians of Street Orchestra Live, under a specially constructed marquee in Firstsite’s gardens mixing popular classics with rap, salsa and film music. The festival's flagship annual residency at the breathtaking church in the idyllic village of Stoke by Nayland will take place from 5 to 8 September. Tony Bell
What Goes on Inside Our Heads LUNAR ECHOES Claiming London as their home town, this band formed in Cambridge and could be described as ‘regulars’ at The Blue Moon. It was the video for ‘Neon’ that drew me in to begin with, then I discovered ‘Strangers’ with its thumping beat. The album is bluesy, its funky, its rocky - hell, its good!
Dirtsville GOOFA DUST Goofa Dust call themselves a ‘powerful rhythm and
blues collective’. As descriptions go, that one pretty much hits the mark, spot on - just look at the line up: King, Locke, Fillbrook, Elden and Diffley. ‘Shame’ is the first single to be released from the album and gives a pretty darn good impression of what this group is capable of. A real shame I missed them at StowBlues if you’ll excuse the pun!
fans (who crowdfunded the album’s creation). The arrangements bring a depth to the already thought provoking lyrics they have even included a brass band on one track!
Pale Blue Blanket PETER HEPWORTH
A New Way On BAYFIELD BOOTH I have to declare an interest here, I shot the cover images for this album. Musically however I had nothing to do with it! Messers Bayfield & Booth have come together to create a beautiful album of songs written straight from the heart. They have been gigging these songs for about a year, many will be familiar to their
The launch of Peter’s first ever single was held in a boatyard, featured Kal Lavelle and if I’m honest, on the night everyone completely forgot about the single. At the end of his set Peter proposed to his partner, she said yes and that was what was important. None-theless, the single marks the renaissance of a singersongwriter who’s talent we almost lost, such is the weird industry of music making. Peter is at home writing songs, doubtless there will be an album to come, we can’t wait!

Gradients DUSKY SUNDAY I have known these two musicians individually for some years now. But I hadn’t heard them play together until about a year ago - one of those OMG moments (in a good way!). Gradients is a cracking debut album for the duo and proves how really good a good song can be with a full band surrounding it. Just listen to Standing on a Rock - oh those lyrics!
Morganway MORGANWAY Back in May I mistakenly highlighted ‘Frozen in Our Time’ as the debut album from Norwich based Morganway. That is but a mere track from their self
titled album due out in August. I have no problem admitting my mistake because it means that there are ten more tracks to enjoy on this extremely well produced piece of work. ‘Let Me Go’ has a ‘Last Train to Clarkesville-esque’ opening but there any similarity ends! ‘I Want No Other Love’, the last track on the album, is gorgeous.
Life Drawing JOHN WARD Earlier this year my colleague Foz featured John Ward and his band in his Foster Factor piece. Based in Lowestoft, John is one of the many hard working musicians plying their trade in the region, when he is not curating his stage and the workshops at FolkEast. His latest album ‘Life Drawing’ is a mix of traditional and new material with his jazz inspired ‘Human Statue’ putting John & his band in a completely new light for me and sounding more Le Havre than Lowestoft! Seek out a copy, you won’t be disappointed.

Revival CHRISTIAN SMITH Not many album launches take place in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire! But where a launches happens is irrelevant, what it sounds like is way more important. Christian’s modern c&w infused rock frames his strong lyrics perfectly. Not sure yet whether ‘Tattoos & Sad Stories’ with its rhythmic tribal beat or the rocky ‘Mulholland’ are my favourites. Perhaps I’ll just press repeat... Singles Summary - just out, due out or I only just discovered them! New Festival in the Heart of Norfolk’s Cider Country This month we welcome a new festival to East Anglia. BanhamFest in Norfolk is the brainchild of Brian MacAlister, the man running the Banham Barrel who is making a name for himself getting some rather well known names turning up to play in his Back Room – one of Norfolk’s best kept secrets! Replacing Banham’s Appleyard Fair and in the same location – the field next to The Barrel, BanhamFest is a three day event starting on Friday 26th July with Beans on Toast headlining and Norwich based Kaves opening proceedings. Kaves are the recent winners of ‘Twisted Melon – Battle of the Bands’ in King’s Lynn. This is a family friendly event with music at its core. There will be plenty of things
for young people to do: a Forest School, Banham Zoo Pop-up, an escape room and throughout there is a relaxation zone and a mass yoga session on Sunday morning. On Saturday electrified bluegrass is on the menu when Tennessee based Hayseed Dixie headline the musical entertainment. They will be preceded by Bury St Edmunds’ very own Thy Last Drop who play what they call carnival punk. Now, am I alone in wondering what electrified carnival bluegrass punk might sound like? You never know what can happen in south Norfolk’s cider country! Add to that eclectic mix Pirate Joe and the Forgeign Locals and Saturday has all the hallmarls of a gig that will get talked about for years to come. If you have yet to hear and see Pirate Joe seek them out, doubtless there is a fundraising page for a new guitar, have you seen the holes in the one he plays currently? Sunday will see Gary Standley, no stranger to the pages of Grapevine, curating the days events with his very own selection of local bands. Gary is a great supporter of the local music scene on Norfolk – check out his podcast on BBC Sounds – BBC Norfolk Introducing.
Kaves
Brian is to be lauded for undertaking the launch of a new festival in the current economic climate, but then he is not running the event to become a festival millionaire - do such people exist?

Hayseed Dixie Brian is raising money for six charities: Action for Hearing Loss, Friends of Banham Primary School, Lets Do it Anyway, Nature & Nurture, Nelson’s Journey and ZSEA. All are local charities or those with which The Barell has a personal connection to. Given the choice between £35 for a weekend with fifteen and more bands appearing amongst a friendly, happy family crowd or £80 to see a big name act appear as a dot on the horizon of an amphitheatre... well we know what we’ll be using spending the Grapevine summer festival savings on. We asked our photographer, not quite a regular at The Barell, who he’d be listening out for: “Apart from those already mentioned, let’s see: Mammal Not Fish and When Rivers Meet are two on my ‘got to see this year’ list. Looking forward to hearing Niamh again, she is such an awesome songstress! Gary Standley’s line up for the Sunday has yet to break cover but I know it will be good.” An adult day ticket will cost you just £20, and a mere £35 for an adult weekend ticket. Attending this festival is not going to break the bank. The team at the Barrel deserve for this event to be a success, their warm welcome will ensure you feel at home whether you just pop in for a single day or go the whole hog and camp or glamp all weekend. The weather may be hotting up as we get into July, and hopefully you’ve got a Stagey Summer lined-up with the eclectic mix of arts festivals, open air theatre and seaside specials that are on offer. That said, whilst we may be enjoying the sun, it’s not too early to start planning your Autumn Season of theatre! Kicking off the New Wolsey Theatre’s Autumn Season in style is a new production of the classic comedy from Richard Bean of One Man, Two Guvnors (5-28th September). Set in the colourful underworld of Brighton in the swinging sixties, this riotous farce mixes all the elements of classic comedy into a fizzing cocktail of fun.
The Season For fans of something new, you will be excited to learn of The Season (516th November) – a new musical by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, winners of the 2018 Stiles and Drewe Mentorship Award, which celebrates the best of emerging British song-writing talent. This brand new romantic comedy is filled with heart-warming and hilarious songs, and tells of Dougal and Robyn who meet in JFK Airport on Christmas Eve and are thrown
together for a wild weekend in the city that never sleeps, their adventure becomes a musical whirlwind of confession, frustration and maxing-out credit cards in Macy’s. Will these two endearing misfits provide the ultimate test for the theory that opposites always attract? Other key highlights include the timely Two Trains Running (8-12th October), focusing on a controversial new president in the White House and how racial tensions are on the rise. The Night Watch (30 Sept-5 Oct) is a thrilling portrait of four ordinary people caught up in the aftermath of an extraordinary time. One Under (31 Oct-1 Nov) is an evocative play about the power of guilt and the quest for atonement. Over at Norwich Theatre Royal, get a taste of West End glitz with the hit show Kinky Boots (17-28 September) stomping into the theatre for a few weeks to take you from the shoe-making factory floor to the glamorous catwalks of Milan, with music penned by pop icon Cyndi Lauper. Shelagh Delaney’s career defining play and British classic, A Taste of Honey (12-16th November) also pays a visit and this is an exhilarating depiction of workingclass life in post-war Salford. In a modern twist, The Watermill Theatre presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth playing side by side. Encouraging audiences to immerse

“Move It, Move It”! The hilarious adult comedy Avenue Q (5-9th Nov) is also hitting the fields. In addition, both Madagascar the Musical and Avenue Q will also be headed to the newly reformed New Theatre Peterborough – but in addition, their impressive season also includes Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (4-9 Nov) which recently toured some of the region in spring and star-studded West End and Broadway hit comedy Boeing Boeing (21-23 Nov).
Kinky Boots into the contrasting worlds, and embrace the blazing energy, beauty and tragedy of Shakespeare with sounds inspired by the likes of Nina Simone, Billie Holliday, The xx and The Rolling Stones. Starting the Mercury Theatre Colchester’s Abbey Field season is Colchester Operatic Society’s production of the beloved musical Oliver! (27 Sept-12 Oct), expect song, dance and Oom-pah-pah! Based on the film of the same name, Madagascar the Musical (30 Oct-3 Nov) features all the iconic characters and is set to leave audiences with no choice but to
As ever, this is only scraping the surface on the wide range of offerings from these theatres and of course only a small percentage of our regions theatres; so don’t hesitate to pick up a brochure or visit the website for your local theatre.
