CoverSTAR
On our cover this month: Grace & Aaron Bond of When Rivers Meet - a Blues + Roots Rock duo from Essex. Their soulful vocals lock into harmony with a natural chemistry: Aaron’s bold, driven guitar is grounded by his solid kick drum, and Grace’s unique slide mandolin and fiddle combine to create a wall of sound. With a combination of well-crafted self-penned songs and reworked traditionals, performances are fearless.

StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.
I’m going to show my age here but I reckon when it comes to pop music, the 1980s is up there with the very best decades. For many people it all got a bit too electronic and plastic, but for me it was always interesting and nothing seemed to stand still for too long. Inevitably, not all the music or the acts who performed during that era have worn well but someone who most certainly has is the singer Mari Wilson, known at the time as The Queen of the Beehive as well as The Queen Of Neasden Soul. Mari emerged in the early part of the decade and soon found herself in the charts with the classic single Just What I Always
Wanted. While her singing style and her appearance were heavily steeped in the 1960s, she still managed to sound and look fresh and her retro approach fitted the scene of the day like a glove. Another of her most successful recordings was a cracking rendition of Cry Me A River, a song that’s been covered many times since but rarely up to Mari’s standards. During her 80s pomp, Mari was backed by The Wilsations and I recall with a great deal of fondness a show they did at the UEA in Norwich. It was like a 1960s soul revue, the sort of thing I’d seen on TV but never witnessed live. I remember the thrill of seeing the larger-than-life Ms. Wilson fronting a powerful big band which included backing singers Michelle Collins and Julia Fordham, both of whom would go on to enjoy their own time in the sun; Michelle in the BBC soap Eastenders, Julia as a successful singer in her own right. In fact, Julia was in our neck of the woods earlier this year as part of the Woman To Woman show with Judie Tzuke and Beverley Craven. It didn’t come as too much of a surprise when by the turn of the decade Mari had moved into a jazzier direction and she later collaborated with two of her peers – Claire Martin and Barb Jungr – for a project called Girl Talk. That was something of a forerunner to the recent Woman To Woman show and for my money was every bit as good.

Mari has released a string of superb albums since her breakthrough in 1982, including a set of covers under the title Cover Stories. It was a timely reminder of just how comfortable Mari is interpreting other people’s material, no matter what style it might be. Her most recent album, Pop Deluxe, came out three years ago and last year she was a surprise guest at Soft Cell’s last ever show at the O2 Arena in London. Mari joined Marc Almond for a duet - proof, if needed, that she is still held in high esteem by those she was vying for chart positions with in the 1980s. This year Mari Wilson has returned to the format that served her so well three and a half decades ago. She has assembled an eight piece band called The New Wilsations and they’re about to play a handful of UK dates starting at Ipswich’s New Wolsey Theatre on Sunday, October 27. If you’ve been to concerts at the New Wolsey you will know just how well it lends itself to live music. Last autumn I promoted sell-out shows there by two other big names from the 80s – China Crisis and Shakatak – following on from a number of other concerts over the past decade by a wide range of acts including Kiki Dee, Nine Below Zero, Dr Feelgood, Mud Morganfield, Ben Waters, Mike Sanchez, James Hunter and Jo Harman. At the time of writing, I have exciting plans of two more concerts in the Spring of next year but in the meantime I hope you can join me for the marvellous Mari Wilson.

Among The Citizens We met Peterborough based band Among The Citizens because they were the winners of the Grapevine sponsored Indie category at the NMG Awards last month. By happy co-incidence the band were also one of those playing live on the night so we were delighted to see and hear them perform too. The sound that John, Ollie, Christy & James created is all their own, a distinct blend of influences from band like The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. The band kicked off 2019 by being included on the Big in 2019 list published by respected promoters This Feeling in association with Fred Perry Subculture and supporting up and coming artists Valeras, Apre, Bloxx, Getrz, Arcade Hearts and Rascalton.
Among The Citizens with Sue and Steve from Grapevine
Among The Citizens first single release of the year received critical acclaim from blogs such as When The Horn Blows, Born Music Online and Its All Indie whilst they have toured venues in Brighton, London, Newcastle, Sheffield, Leeds, Leicester and Portsmouth. The band have also played showcase events such as The Great Escape in association with Louder Than War and the Commune stage at the 110 Above Festival. In August they supported Gengahr in Cambridge. By far the best description of the band’s music comes from Born Music Online who say “Among The Citizens are what we’d imagine it would be like if The Cure and The 1975 met up in a seedy night club.”

First Impressions of the NMG Awards
• Audience Choice Award: Pink Lemonade
This was Grapevine Magazine’s first involvement with the NMG Awards and from what we saw we were very impressed. So much so that we have already committed to sponsoring the 2020 awards! Quite apart from the opportunity to mix with the region’s musicians, producers and fans, the format of this awards ceremony allowed us to enjoy live performances too. This year we were treated, and I mean treated, to performances by Hollowstar, Ellie Dixon, Among The Citizens, Ffion Rebecca with DJ Mackenzie, 4th Labrinth and Riviera with Gaffa Tape Sandy rounding things off as the crowd let their hair down. For almost thirty years Grapevine has been listing gigs and generally shouting about local music. By getting a large number of the best acts in the region in the same room, the NMG Awards really brings home to you just how much talent we have in the east of England. From Peterborough to Bedford and back through Bury St Edmunds and up to King’s Lynn there are bands performing in small venues that will knock the socks off you whatever your go-to genre is.

Singer-Songwriter
Recently turned 14, Doc Martin wearing, singer-songwriter Roma has already raised over £12,000 for local charities with her performances and sales of her selfproduced EP and album. She has appeared in the press and on the radio, performed at Ipswich Music Day, Felixstowe Carnival and is the first local artist to be stocked in HMV Ipswich.
show and everyone was lovely. I feel lucky to have done this and I love Shrek!
HG: When did it all start?
HG: How is school? You do so much out of school, do you actually like it?
Roma: Mum was volunteering at The Ipswich Winter Night Shelter and I wanted to help, but I was only 11 at the time and couldn’t do much. I wrote a song ‘Father’ in about 15 minutes, we recorded it at home and when we listened back to it we didn’t really know what to do with it. Then the idea came up to sell it and raise money for the shelter. The song is about my grandfather who passed, and I thought of what my mother was thinking about. We launched the EP in 2017 with a target to raise £2,000 and in 6 months we raised £4,500!
HG: So the song writing and fundraising is taking you on a path that wasn’t part of your plan? Roma: I want to be a music producer too. I want to show and inspire other girls, to say girls can produce music. It gives me another skill and not having to rely on others.
Roma: I do now. I had to change schools as I was being bullied. I got bullied because of the fundraising and my singing and song writing. I’d go into the music room and write songs every single day. It got to the point where I was being physically abused on the bus, everyday some form of bullying happened. HG: That must have been a worrying time, Is the new school better?
Roma: I taught myself to play the piano and I am teaching myself the guitar – so I can play songs badly! I’ll never play when I’m busking! I’m getting there slowly.
Roma: Yes, the new school is great and are very supportive of my fundraising. There is one song on the album ‘Stronger’ written with my friend Chris Silvester. He did the lyrics and I came up with the melody. It’s about being strong and fighting the bullying. Not physically. Social Media is causing mental health problems. There is too much body shaming and the need to be body perfect. The song is about trying to promote you are not what they say you are, you’re not too fat, or too skinny – you are perfect the way you are and you don’t need to listen to anyone else. My album ‘Teen Spirit’ is all about teenage life and what goes on, you have love, break-ups and bullies.
HG: Prior to the first EP in 2017, what have you done musically?
HG: How do you chose the charities and the targets?
Roma: I’ve been part of Stagecoach since I was four years old and I was asked to perform in Shrek The Musical when I was 10 years old. It was a great experience to be in a professional
Roma: We have targets each year of what we want to reach and we have reached them. When I was bullied, I never used to go out, never went into town, never had any friends
HG: Wow, that’s great, how did it make you feel with it being so successful? Roma: It was a good promotion for the charity as they do a lot for the homeless. It made me happy, being recognised for the work I do for the charity and it gets the public involved. My main goal is to get all the charities noticed and to tell the public they can do it too. HG: What instruments do you play?

but doing this fundraising I’ve met loads of people of all different ages and I feel my followers understand me. They support me. I want to help those charities who are able to support the things I am passionate about, like mental health. We are currently raising for 4YP (Suffolk Young People’s Health Project). HG: Who is your inspiration? Roma: Ed Sheeran. I don’t really listen to the music but the words. They tell a story of his life and what he’s seen, and that’s what I do. I write about my life. I’ve written sad songs but that was during the bullying and now I write uplifting songs. I feel I have changed a lot listening to what I used to write and what I write now. HG: How do you choose which song to use for the EP/Album? Roma: We discuss a lot as a family. We are all really close and we go through the songs and make the best choice. HG: What’s next for you? Roma: We are working on a 5-track EP and will be launching for next year’s charities. Also I am Miss Junior Teen Suffolk. We’re also releasing a new charity record in October. It’s a new song that I have written about teenagers and self-harm. It is being used in a 15-minute documentary with Student Life Magazine, which will be shown in schools to highlight mental health issues, it’s called Who Am I?

this amazing band. They will remember 2019 for one gig and one gig only - the one in Chantry Park, supporting Ed Sheeran. What is ever going to top that? These NMG Breakthrough Artists are well worth a listen. It’s Alright DAN BOND This single is Dan’s first release since his 2016 EP Three Good Friends. He was a little taken aback to win the NMG Best Male Solo award. His sound drifts towards country with a hint of pop but as I always say, these sort of labels are just that, labels. Yet another on my ever lengthening MSL list - that’s Must See Live in case I’ve not mentioned it before!
Sit back and enjoy the first four tracks then, make sure there are no potential interruptions and let the fifth and final track flow over you. Fever is one of those songs you will want to savour every syllable of. This u18 band are already good - we can only imagine what they’ll be like in a couple of years time.
have discovered it I cannot help but keep playing the opening track Freak - not that there is anything wrong with the other four tracks but you know the way some tracks just grab you. Ellie was one of the musicians playing live at the NMG Awards, she won the Female solo category in 2017 and 2018. In my review of the awards ceremony I described her voice as being like dark chocolate - rich and comforting. This MSL list of mine now has an annex the MSL Again list!
No Hope THE EXTONS Growing Pains ELLIE DIXON Salvador SALVADOR Whatever I say about this EP will have little effect on

Their bio says: “..memorable guitar riffs & anthemic choruses about small town monotony...” hmmm, whatever that says about their home town King’s Lynn, it didn’t stop this single being BBC Radio 1’s track of the week back in June.

Sin City CALL TO THE FAITHFUL
John, Ollie, Christy and James have now been officially adopted by Grapevine Magazine! For they won the Indie category at the NMG Awards which Grapevine sponsored.
This Peterborough based band introduced themselves to us after the NMG Awards, sent us a link to this single and I was hooked on that guitar riff from the get go. Then I read their bio which talks about their “...unique brand of hard-hitting guitar riffs.” - no argument there. The single is out now - in fact released on the day I was typing up this piece! You can find
Incredibly catchy and well produced this - their latest single release, is one of those ‘I wanna hear more’ sounds (“I need it, I need it” as the song goes!). We’ll be keeping a close eye on
This month we launch the Grapevine App - now you can get your gig listings & news straight to your phone.
For me personally, the best part of the NMG Awards was being introduced to music I wouldn’t normally listen to. Electro synth pop doesn’t feature much on my playlists - until now. Sophie won the Female Solo award at NMG and I can see why. She writes & produces her own material. It is moody and very easy on the ear, then you begin to listen, really listen, and the whole thing comes alive! It is a well crafted and beautifully produced work.

Summer is long gone, and we’re ploughing on through the autumn season which is full of great theatre, and soon it’ll be all about the pantomimes. Oh yes it will! To kick off proceedings, I thought I’d highlight a few of the best panto picks across Norfolk and Cambridgeshire from traditional, quirky and beyond. Sticking to all of the traditional Panto formulas, the Norwich Theatre Royal (17 Dec-19 Jan) is set to be a good one with the ever-popular Cinderella starring the likes of Richard Gauntlett, Joe Tracini and David Gant. You can expect magical twists, fun, laughter and adventure with this production telling the timeless tale of the servant girl who falls in love with Prince Charming. The Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich (14-31 December) and the St Georges Theatre (1430 Dec), Great Yarmouth are also sticking with tradition of another magical and beloved fairytale classic, Beauty and the Beast (14-31 December). Get the family to join the adventures of Dick Whittington and His Cat, who also gets two outings in Norfolk at the Little Theatre, Sheringham (7 Dec-1 Jan) and Princess Theatre, Hunstanton (30 Nov-1 Jan). Over in Cambridgeshire, some of the classic takes on panto include Cambridge Arts Theatre (28 Nov-11 Jan) take on Cinderella, which is set to star Wayne Sleep, Liza Goddard and Matt Crosby with further casting expected soon. The Cresset, Peterborough (7-30 Dec) is also giving us a spin at Cinderella and promises the sparkliest sets, the funniest jokes, the catchiest songs, and the ugliest sisters. Dance lovers can rejoice, as Ballet Central returns to The ADC Theatre Cambridge (17-19 Dec) to perform their adaption of the Christmas classic, The Nutcracker. The Key Theatre, Peterborough (5 Dec-5 Jan) are bringing us the beloved Beauty and the Beast.
For the alternative offerings, Norwich Playhouse presents a unique co-production, with Norwich Theatre Royal and Lost in Translation, of A Circus Carol (11-21 Dec). Many know the iconic Charles Dickens tale, but not like this – as this special circus production is filled with gasps, thrills and laughs! With acrobatics, ghosts of past, present and future, and some truly amazing trickery, this marvelously intricate reimagining captures all the thrills and spills of the original festive tale with even more spectacle.
Famed for their unique offering, this year’s show from Cambridge Junction (11 Dec-5 Jan) is The Wind in the Willows, presented by Figs in Wigs which promises to be a fun reimagining of the beloved family tale. Especially when in the depths of winter it often seems like there’s nothing alive out there in the forest, yet there’s a whole world unfolding right before your eyes! Join the sensitive Mole, the gregarious Ratty, the world-weary Badger and the very excitable Toad as they go on a brand new festive adventure. The ADC Theatre Cambridge (10-14 Dec) is also offering up a production of The Wind in the Willows, as adapted by Alan Bennett.

All this and I’ve only scraped the surface; with all these Pantos in just two counties alone, I look forward to bringing you the picks of Suffolk and Essex next month in our Panto Special edition of Grapevine. As you’ll have noticed there’s a few common names appearing so what’s your prediction of the most performed Panto of 2019? Drop us a message on Facebook with your guesses!
