CoverSTAR

Redefining British Country Music, Sam Coe sheds a new light on the musty, tinged world of traditional country. Raw, gritty and honest. No pretence, just her gutsy truth colliding with the music. Following previous critical acclamation and success as both a solo artist and with her band, The Long Shadows. This year sees Sam Coe heading in a fresh musical direction. At Grapevine we have had a glimpse at where she is going, we want to go there too. She launches her first solo album at Epic Studios in Norwich on 28th November, we’ll be there, why not join us?

StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

As the old blues song put it so succinctly – another man done gone. The Southend music scene has lost one of its best known characters – Barrie Masters, lead singer with the legendary Eddie and the Hot Rods. Even though Barrie hadn’t enjoyed the best of health in recent times, his death last month still came as a big shock to music fans throughout the land. Just like their peers Dr Feelgood and The Kursaal Flyers, Eddie and the Hot Rods hailed from the Thames Delta and they too landed a major record deal. The Hot Rods signed to Island Records in the mid-1970s off the back of their live shows which paved the way for the punk explosion that soon followed. Barrie was at the helm and with the exception of Lee Brilleaux there was no better frontman at the time on the British music scene. Barrie and Lee both lived on Canvey. They both knew how to entertain and were admired by numerous punk singers who, at that point, were still learning the game. After a couple of decent but commercially unsuccessful singles – Writing On The Wall and Wooly Bully – Island Records took a leaf out of the book of The Feelgoods’ label United Artists and went for a live recording to capture their Essex signing at their best. The EP Live At The Marquee remains

a seminal ‘in concert’ release. It was garage-rock at his very best and paved the way for the classic Hot Rods’ studio album Teenage Depression. The best was yet to come and in 1977 the second LP, Life On The Line, spawned Do Anything You Wanna Do, one of the best singles of the New Wave era (or any other era come to that). For that release the group was billed simply as The Rods. Why? I couldn’t fathom it out then and more than forty years later it’s a decision I still don’t understand. At around that time Eddie and the Hot Rods headlined a show at the Ipswich Gaumont which also included Squeeze and The Radio Stars on the bill. It’s a concert I’ve always regretted missing and I had to wait many years for my opportunity to see what by then was a very different line-up.

I did book the 1980s version of the group to play at the Ipswich Corn Exchange but only days before the gig Barrie became ‘unavailable’ and Hot Rods’ guitarist Warren Kennedy brought his own group to town instead! Barrie finally made it back to Ipswich in the following decade when The Hot Rods, with Richard Holgarth now on board, performed at The Railway pub. In more recent times I’ve had the honour of organising three Eddie and the Hot Rods gigs – a storming Christmas show at the Cult Café in Ipswich, a headlining set at the Bures Music Festival and finally a concert at the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket. On each occasion Barrie had the audience exactly where he wanted them – eating out of the palms of his hands.

Photo: Jeff Higgott Earlier this year Barrie bowed out of live work. The band did a farewell tour featuring members past and present. By all accounts they were magnificent shows providing a fitting finale for a wonderful British band. Rest in peace Barrie.

Gabby Rivers

Singer/Songwriter Suffolk-based Gabby Rivers is a 16-year-old singer/songwriter who oozes confidence when on stage with her red guitar. Gabby was a nominee at the 2019 NMG Awards for the category ’18 & Under Solo’ and already has an impressive list of venues where she has performed: Cambridge Junction, Sound City, Latitude, The Apex and her list of gig dates are getting longer… and she is yet to release her first track!

GR: Mainly alternative/indie music but also R&B and soul music.

HG: Let’s begin with you telling us how you started playing the guitar, writing songs and then performing.

HG: Do you remember your first gig? How nervous were you?

GR: I started playing the guitar when I was 13 after doing open mics, once I learnt the basic chords I started to come up with catchy melodies and that’s when I started writing songs, the first few songs weren’t my strongest but the more writing I did, the better it got. With the performing side of things, I started out doing musical theatre at the age of 8 and I realised I enjoyed singing the most so I then did open mics from the age of 12 onwards and the more gigs and open mics I did, I got more opportunities which was great. HG: Who are your influences? GR: Bands such as Two Door Cinema Club, Florence and the Machine and Vampire Weekend but obviously there is a lot more. HG: Which song do you most like to perform, and why? GR: My original song “Game” this is because it’s a really upbeat song and I feel like the crowd like this one best as the reaction is always good and people can relate to it. HG: Do you play other instruments? GR: Just the guitar, and singing. HG: What types of music do you enjoy listening to when you are hanging out?

HG: What’s your song writing process? Tell us how it works: GR: I come up with a chord progression that is mainly upbeat or catchy and then I first off write the chorus mainly a line that is the main hook of the song and I base the rest of the song around this, so then I do the verses and so on. If I have a strong idea usually a song will take 30 minutes if not it could take up to 2 days.

GR: My first gig was at a pub in Aldeburgh and I was so nervous, I had been practicing with backing tracks for weeks before but it ended up going really well. HG: Are you at college/studying? GR: I am currently studying Music Performance Level 3 at Access to Music in Norwich

9

HG: How did you choose your current band members? GR: I met my guitarist Jason at multiple open mics, the drummer Coran I met when he was busking and I asked If he wanted to jam at an open mic night and we then just started working together. And finally my bassist I met through Coran as they went to college together. HG: If you could choose any singer/musician to join you for one gig, who would it be? GR: Either Florence and The Machine or Freddie Mercury. HG: When did you last wish you were invisible?

HG: When you are not making music, what hobbies do you enjoy? GR: I enjoy dancing and acting in my spare time, but also sports such as netball. HG: What’s your party trick? GR: I wouldn’t necessarily say I have a party trick but whenever I am at party people try and play my music which is quite funny at times. HG: What musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? GR: Florence from Florence and the Machine because her stage presence and vocal range is incredible and has always inspired me. HG: Anything unusual happened at a gig? GR: Something that never happens and is unusual is moshing and crowd surfing, which happened at one of my Cambridge Junction gigs which was pretty cool. HG: When did you last remember a dream? GR: About 2 weeks ago, but I don’t usually remember my dreams. HG: What artist/group would you like to support? GR: Local bands I would love to support would either be Bessie Turner or Gaffa Tape Sandy however big bands I would love to support would be Two Door Cinema Club, Circa Waves or Sam Fender. HG: Do you play/sing solo as well as with the band? GR: I sing solo stuff at smaller gigs but bigger gigs I do with the band

GR: When I was 8 at primary school and had to dress up as a banana for a fair trade assembly because I was the only one that could fit in the costume as I was so tall. HG: How often do you practice? GR: I usually practice 3-4 times a week not including gigs and college. HG: What’s next for you? GR: My next gig is at Wild Paths Festival on 19th October in the library at Norwich, Bury St Edmunds Hunter Club supporting Stretch Soul Gang on Saturday 16th November. Gig announcements are posted on my Instagram @gabbyriversmusic. Last of all my single ‘Game” is being released 25th October and I will release an EP early next year.

Mat Bayfield

Life’s no Rehearsal Tony Bell remembers his friend Mat

Many people knew Mat Bayfield better than I. We didn’t go to school together, didn’t play cricket or football together, I was never in a band with him. In truth I knew Mat for a relatively short period of time. Nevertheless, we became friends and his passing has left a hole. I first met Mat backstage at Ipswich Music Day. He and Eric were about to go play in the Grapevine tent as The Broadside Boys, he was looking for water, I helped him find some. Little did I know that day how much that son of a gamekeeper would come to mean to me. Our paths would cross from time to time at gigs, I got to know his songs, became fascinated by his lyrics. He taught me so much about my adopted county through his song

writing. I would take great delight in winding him up by saying that, whilst he had had the good fortune to be born in Suffolk, I had made a conscious choice to live here. Nor will I pretend to know how Mat felt when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. His subsequent very public fight against it became inspirational to many of us. He harnessed the power of positive thinking. “Life’s no rehearsal” became his mantra. He genuinely wanted us to understand what that meant, it wasn’t just a catch phrase. Recently, Mat began a collaboration with producer and musician David Booth and ‘Bayfield Booth’ was born. In truth this was far more about friendship than any commercial arrangement. They asked me to photograph a song-writing session and so I went from a shoot in one of the best-known studios in London one day to a tiny little schoolhouse in Suffolk the next – Mat never let me get above myself!

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE

We came up with some crazy ideas, one that never quite took off was the FolkEast Live Lounge. In Mat’s mind, if it was good enough for the BBC at Glastonbury why couldn’t we do it in Suffolk at the greatest festival in the shires of Eastfolk! Alongside my friend Julz, I photographed Mat’s wedding to Kelly, despite having told them both that ‘we don’t do weddings’! It was probably the most nerve wracking piece of work I have ever undertaken. We even planned the shoot in Lego - I kid you not! Mat was immensely proud of the results we produced that day. Despite us ‘not doing weddings’ Julz and I were equally honoured to be given the opportunity.

Mat and I, along with our designated drivers, Kelly and Kathy were frequently the last ones to leave The Froize in the early hours of Monday morning after an evening of folk music on Sunday evening. These were not heavy drinking sessions, we all just enjoyed each other’s company, we’d exchange stories and just talk, laugh and enjoy life – Living Life for The Day. Mat was a very ordinary yet extraordinary man. To have known him was a privilege, to have become his friend, an honour. But my feeling of loss is nothing compared to what his Mum, Dad, children and wife are feeling now, and will continue to feel. My thoughts are with them – Hold on Tight.

2019 Christmas Show Guide Our challenge every November is to write the introduction to the Christmas Show Guide without falling into the dreaded panto cliché trap – here we go… The statistics say it all, no fewer than fifty-nine Christmas Shows on offer across the region starting this month and carrying on well into the new year. Some mere one-night stands, others with runs so long that those taking part rent houses in the region! The most popular show this season by a country mile is Cinderella with Aladdin and Beauty & The Beast joint second. The show with the longest title is Eastern Angels’ “Famous Four and a Half Go Wild in Thetford Forest” followed closely by Common Ground’s “Sherlock Holmes and The Warlock of Whitechapel” who win the prize for the most performances across the most venues. The longest running show, as ever it seems, is New Wolsey’s rock’n’roll Aladdin extravaganza which runs for an amazing sixty-four days. The Mercury Theatre’s Cinderella is taking place in a purpose-built tent on Abbey Fields – now that is going to be special. What do you think boys and girls? Did we make it through without a cliché? What’s that? Its where – behind us? Oh no it isn’t!

Sound City Ipswich Sound City Ipswich took place last month. This was the town’s first multi venue festival and music industry conference. The conference discussions included talks on the importance of venues, how to release music and get paid for it and a guide to record labels. Mark Davyd, CEO of the Music Venue Trust is passionate about keeping entry level music venues open. The once healthy Student Union circuit has disappeared and there are only about 500 venues nationally putting on emerging artists, he told us. But it is not, as most of us think, because people are not going out to listen to live music. Venues are closing because of external pressures: gentrification, poor practices and costs. One venue mentioned that their rent had risen by 400%.

It is a scary world out there if you are trying to run a venue but MVT have a range of resources which you can access freely at musicvenuetrust.com/resources I found the discussion around PPL, PRS and The MU very enlightening, it was good to hear representatives of each organisation explain what they are about. Interesting too to discover that what most artists do is forget to sign up! And what have the record labels ever done for us would be a fair way to paraphrase one of the questions asked of the panel on labels. In truth, some bands don’t need a label if they have the business acumen to do it themselves but not all are so lucky.

But my favourite quote of the day came again from that man Mark Davyd when discussing running a venue: “You need a lunatic!” Someone with the passion to make it happen, to put up with the external pressures, someone who understands the industry and how has a vision. I guess the search is now on for Ipswich’s lunatic! Beyond the conference there was, as you’d expect, live music. Four stages hosted a varied selection of acts both local and national. There was an outdoor stage on the Cornhill, the Corn Exchange itself and the Manor Ballroom just down the road. We took a short walk to The Smokehouse for their first session of the night but couldn’t get in the door, it was full, proving that small venues can work.

Apparently a ‘venue for Ipswich’ campaign was started thirty-seven years ago in 1982. That we are still talking about a 250 capacity venue materialising speaks volumes. Sound City Ipswich was an eye opener and an opportunity to see some great bands. What needs to happen now is action, but it remains unclear who will step forward as the lunatic and where that lunatic will find the resources.

We are deep into the swing of the autumn season, and I hope you’ve been making the most of the wealth of great theatre around. As the pantomime season begins to take over the counties (Oh yes it is!) and thrive, in addition to our annual panto pullout, I wanted to continue on from last month’s feature and highlight a few more of the best picks, this time focusing on what Suffolk and Essex have on offer. Ipswich is fortunate in having a particularly vast and varied choice, though one of the local favourites has to be Ipswich Regent’s traditional take on Cinderella (14-31 Dec), this year starring Adam Garcia and Hannah Spearritt, with more to be announced, so you won’t want to miss out on tickets to this year’s ball. Another local favourite is the infamous New Wolsey Theatre’s rock ’n’ roll panto which continues to be as popular as ever, and this year sees Peter Rowe’s take on Aladdin (28 Nov-1 Feb) with over 20 songs performed by the talented troupe of actor-musicians. Whichever way you sway, both are bound to bring joy to families.

However there are plenty more great offerings across Suffolk, as the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds prepare to take flight with Peter Pan (29 Nov-19 Jan), promising a magical evening of fun and adventure. Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society (SODS) have worked hard to put on another great annual panto and this year is the turn of a modern take on Little Red Riding Hood (3-8th December). The Dennis Lowe Theatre Company bring the rags to riches tale of a young man and his cat on an exciting quest for fame and fortune with Dick Whittington at the Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe (21 Dec-5 Jan). If you like your Christmas show to be a little different, Eastern Angles proudly present The Famous Four & A Half Go Wild in Thetford Forest as this year’s crazy offering. This new musical comedy spoof will get you into the festive spirit at the Sir John Mills Theatre, Ipswich (4 Dec-4 Jan) and also touring to the Seckford Theatre, Woodbridge and Key Theatre, Peterborough in January. As for Essex, The Mercury at Abbey Fields in Colchester are playing host to the charming tale of Cinderella (30 Nov-5 Jan). It’s been supersized to fill the venue, which can only mean more glitter, glamour and songs. The Civic Theatre, Chelmsford proudly present the high-flying family show Peter Pan (29 Nov-5 Jan) featuring dynamic dance routines, stunning costumes, an abundance of comedy, plenty of audience participation and heaps of fairy dust! The Harlow Playhouse give us the gigantic Jack and the Beanstalk

(29 Nov-5 Jan), so Fe Fi Fo Fum let’s hope you’re ready for lots of fun.

Alternatively, why not take Christmas to the seaside with Princes Theatre, Clacton’s offering of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (7 Dec-1 Jan) starring Graham Cole (The Bill), Graeme Matthews (Britain’s Got Talent) and Russell Grant, with more star casting to be announced. Meanwhile, over at the Southend Cliffs Pavilion, Ashley Banjo and Diversity, and Kev Orkian are among the first stars announced for Robin Hood and The Merry Men (13 Dec-4 Jan) which is guaranteed to be a dance spectacle, filled with lots of laughs along the way.

Once again, this is only a scrape on the surface of the pantos in the region – so I hope you’ve got your tickets to the ball wherever yours may be before the tickets turn to dust; and get ready to spread that festive cheer loudly for all to hear.
