StephenFoz
Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the late, great Rory Gallagher’s recording career. His first commercial release came as part of the Cork blues-rock trio Taste. Their self-titled debut LP was issued in 1969 but within two years the band had fallen apart with Rory leaving to embark on what would become a hugely successful solo career. Like so many music fans in Suffolk I have very fond memories of the Irishman’s shows at the Ipswich Gaumont. He first appeared there in February 1977 and returned in April of the following year. I was a teenager in those days and recall both nights as if they were yesterday. On both occasions The Joe O’Donnell Band opened up for Rory. Joe was formerly a member of the folk-rock group East Of Eden who you may recall hit the pop charts with the instrumental Jig-a-Jig. Also present on both nights was Tony McPhee of The Groundhogs. In those days Tony lived in Haverhill and was invited on stage with Rory and the band for the encore. How exciting was that? Well, for a young rock fan like me, very! Alongside Rory at his Ipswich shows were bassist Gerry McAvoy, drummer Rod de’Ath and keyboards player Lou Martin. With studio albums like Against The Grain and Calling Card as well as the concert LPs Live In Europe and Irish Tour ’74 rarely off my Garrard turntable I was very familiar with most of Rory’s repertoire in those days. Those
albums and Rory’s shows in Ipswich helped shape my eclectic taste in music and I am proud to say I have every Rory Gallagher release in my collection. I am even prouder to say I got to meet the great man a decade later in 1989. By then I was working at Radio Orwell and Saxon Radio and along with my good friend and colleague Nick Coady was invited to

compere the 3rd Mildenhall Rock and Blues Festival held at West Row. It was a very long day. If I’m honest Nick and I did put away several beers and that was before the first band came on! We had already sorted who was introducing who and Nick being a great guy was more than happy for me to announce one of my big heroes. A few weeks before the Mildenhall bash I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse : ”Would you like to travel down to London to interview Rory for your radio show?” I forget who asked me to do the interview but as you might expect I didn’t need asking twice. During the previous few years, as presenter of The Headbangers’ Ball, I’d already done lots of face-to-face interviews with rock legends like Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant and Lemmy but I can honestly say I was still nervous at the prospect of meeting Rory. I needn’t have worried of course. I did the interview in a music store in Earl’s Court and Rory couldn’t have made me more welcome. We got on well and once we’d done the interview he suggested we retire to a nearby pub. Sadly I had to say no as I had a train to catch back to Ipswich. By 1989 Rory’s band had a different look and feel. Bassist Gerry McAvoy was still there but he now had drummer Brendan O’Neill and harmonica player Mark Feltham alongside him. Tracks from Defender, the first album they made together, played a big part in Rory’s Mildenhall set. Fast forward 30 years and to the exciting news of a 3 CD set which comes out at the end of this month. Simply called Blues, it pulls together loads of previously unreleased Rory Gallagher recordings from the vaults including a whole CD’s worth of acoustic recordings. It also includes some of his many collaborations with blues greats like Muddy Waters and Albert King. Ninety percent of the material has never been out before so for us Rory Gallagher fans it’s manna from heaven. It’s being released on the Chess label and how Rory would have loved that.
Briarbank’s Sunday Jazz Sunday 19th May 1.30pm This month John Parker will be joined by Colchester guitar star Simon Hurley, Bernie Hodgkins on bass and Ron West on drums. Join us for what’s set to be a great afternoon of live jazz. Entry is free.

Top of the FAQs at Grapevine is “how can you help us promote our band/gig/ album launch”… The short answer is: not as much as you can. We have been promoting live entertainment in our region for over twenty-eight years, so we know a bit about getting your message out there. But we can’t do it all for you, you need to help us to help you. The easiest way to tell your fans where you are playing is by adding your gigs to our listings. Its free and you can do it yourself. You’ll find Grapevine Magazine in over five hundred venues locally, so you’ll be saving on shoe leather too! But remember that any printed publication goes through an editorial and production process and will have a deadline. Make sure your listings are posted before the print deadline. Use social media to promote your event, by all means. Do not however make the mistake of thinking that only using social media is enough. Not everyone lives on a social media platform – I know, difficult to comprehend, isn’t it? Old fashioned posters and flyers still have a place. If you balk at paying to advertise a gig you are playing for free you have a bigger question to ask yourself – why are you playing for free? Working to produce entertainment magazines and websites is fast paced and busy. We do not have time to search for your information. Don’t just say ‘You can find me on Facebook’ - send us your link.
You stand a better chance if you send us an EPK. If you have never come across an EPK, believe me, you need one. An Electronic Press Kit is a god send to the busy journalist – but make sure it is up to date. An EPK should contain a brief biography, short, snappy and to the point. Remember the six wise men: who, what, why, where, when and how (who are you, what do you do, why we need to know, where are you from, when are you playing live and how to get in contact). It should contain links to the music – either audio or video. You should also include some high resolution images, at least one portrait and one landscape orientation. Do not however, email 20Gb images to clog up our inbox – send us a Dropbox

or WeTransfer link which contains all of the above. Then there is the venue you are playing at. Ask them what they are doing to promote your gig. You might be surprised at the answer. Some are very good, others need encouragement. Whichever is the case make sure you promote it together. Advertising your gig is part of the cost of putting it on. Of course, we would say that wouldn’t we? We sell advertising! Yes, but whether you advertise with us or buy a sign on the back of a bus – getting your message out there will involve spending money if you want to reach a wider audience. The next paragraph carries a health warning for all you musicians out there. We know enough of you, there are exceptions, but essentially you are creative people with… how shall we put this… a lose grasp of the concept of planning and, if we are honest, time keeping! Oh, come on, you know what we mean – so planning to promote a gig ninety days ahead will come as a shock to many. Those of us who have worked in venues know that 90 days is a reasonable amount of time to ensure you know how many will turn up or, if numbers are looking low at 45 days, that you need to ramp up the promotion a bit! Ah but you can of course resort to the other extreme - the 12 hour Facebook post, in capitals and with too many exclamation marks: THIS IS HAPPENING TONITE GONNA BE AWESOME!!!!!! Oh we know these posts, seen many, they roughly translate to: “Oh poo, we’ve only sold ten tickets!” Seriously, you are the best person to promote your music, your band or your event. You know most about it - you are the expert on your subject. How we can help is by sharing that information which needs to be brief and readily accessible. Start with our free listings service - we list over 1,000 events every month?

Black Grape and Republica are to headline The Bish Bash, in the centre of Bishop’s Stortford over the May Day Bank. Republica, the 90s indie technopop band, headline Saturday. Best known for their hits Drop Dead Gorgeous and Ready To Go, which has become an anthem for many sports teams and advertising campaigns around the globe. Closing the proceedings on the night will be local lunatic rockers, Papa Shango, with their theatrical brand of fun & chaos. The Alex Horne and Bill Bailey endorsed band are festival stalwarts and are alleged to have given local superstar, Sam Smith, his first break when he dressed as an ape for their 2010 performance. Sunday will be headlined by Black Grape, fronted by former Happy Mondays singer and I’m A Celebrity….runner up, Shaun Ryder. Black Grape had a string of hits in the 90s and even headlined Reading Festival. Following a lengthy hiatus they released the critically acclaimed album, Pop Voodoo, which saw them return to the top 20. Sunday’s bill also features party rap duo Too Many T’s and Jim-Bob from Carter USM, fresh from a sell-out show at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Other acts confirmed over the weekend include The Kubricks, A Band Called Malice (The Definitive Tribute to The Jam), Koasis, Stortford Sound System and O’Connell & Love, side project from Alabama 3’s Larry Love.

Like us on Facebook.com/GrapevineLIVE Many countries have celebrated this day for many years on 1st May and continue to do so. As ever, the UK has to be different and so the first Monday in May is our official Bank Holiday. Just to complicate things a bit more, back in the 80’s, in Ipswich, it was decided to hold the celebration on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend. This was to give those people who put the show on, a bit of a breather on the Monday, before going back to work on Tuesday!

This year, BMF welcomes back ska-reggae collective New Town Kings, and soul and funk act Soul Kitchen. Fans of blues and rock can look forward to blues legends Nine Below Zero and Ian Siegal and his band. Headlining the BMF Big Top on Saturday is history’s most notorious Guns N’ Roses tribute, Guns 2 Roses, supported by the world-touring Bon Giovi. Back by popular demand, party band Funk 2k will take to the stage, along with Suffolk’s answer to Eric Clapton, Harry Slater; RnB-rock act The Long Run; the amazing Iron Boot Scrapers and many more. As always, lovers of choral music and jazz can look forward to an exciting line-up in St Marys Church, Bures. And there’s still time for solo artists and bands, performance poets and dancers aged 10 to 18 to sign up for the popular B-Fest competition. BMF’s beautiful Big Top is back alongside the mini Big Top bar. We have a Prosecco and Pimm’s bar, lots of stalls, and rides and activities for children. Each year, the not-for-profit festival raises thousands for valuable charities in the local community including St Nicholas Hospice Care, St Helena Hospice and Ferriers Barn. Bures Music Festival has raised more than £200,000 for great causes since the first event in 1997. Bures Music Festival is a fund-raising event for the Bures Music Festival Charitable Trust.

Matthew Townshend is excited to bring Theatre on the Coast to Southwold with four productions, each playing for a fortnight, at Southwold Arts Centre from July 10 to August 31. Next will be “A Bunch of Amateurs” by Private Eye editor and star of BBC TV’s Have I Got News For You, Ian Hislop, and cartoonist Nick Newman. The third show in the run is “The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband” by Debbie Isitt who is well known for her hit comedy films Nativity and Confetti. 16-18 Aug FolkEast Glemham, Suffolk folkeast.co.uk
FolkEast returns to Glemham Hall with an enviable line-up of artist from England, Scotland, Ireland,Wales, Poland, Canada and the USA. Leading the way will be formidale folk legend Richard Thompson and some of folk’s finest female artists, Karine Polwart and Cara Dillon. John Smith, Calan, Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson, Blackbeards Tea Party and many more. Rekindling the ancient Eastfolk moots on the Glemham Hall estate where for three days a year the folk from the East would meet kith and kin at harvest time for “a bit of a do”, this gathering has Suffolk running through it like letters in a stick of rock - from its locally sourced fare to its suppliers, arts and crafts. The festival, with its ever present mythical emblem The Jackalope, offers a refreshingly different line-up across its seven stages (including the ‘Sanctuary’ stage at St Andrew’s Church, the open air Sunset Stage and the hidden woodland solar-powered Soapbox Stage), with two authentic ‘village’ pubs serving competitivelypriced ales (including Suffolk-based Green Jack Brewery’s festival ale Green Jackalope) plus possibly the smallest pub in the UK,

the Halfway Inn. Then there’s the FolkEast Art Arcade, the Pottery Throw down and Pint out, a packed dance programme, archery, donkey rides, children’s activities - including den building, storybook making and a mud kitchen linked together in a special new children’s trail, yoga, poetry, storytelling, the Eastfolk Kinedrome (showing folk and local interest films), tours of Glemham Hall and lots of curiosities. Advance weekend tickets are available price £120. Children 11 and under are free. Day tickets will be on sale from the end of May. It’s neither a stretch nor hyperbole to say FolkEast remains arguably the best small festival in the country” - RnR Magazine.

Enza ia a four track EP with a classic guitar feel - listen to Without Warning, you’ll see what I mean.
Hummingbird POLLY HAYNES Although Polly Haynes describes herself as Jazz inspired I would not call her music jazz. What she does, and does well, is her own thing. Powerfullly delivered words and a strong rhythm make this a very listenable collection of music - hints of Amy Winehouse spring to mind.
Enza JOE BOYD A big thank you to one of our regular readers who introduced me to the music of Joe Boyd from Clacton.
Song KEITH SADLER
Frozen in Our Time MORGANWAY Morganway were new to me when they played the GrapevineLIVE stage at Ipswich Music Day back in 2015. They were good then but boy have they progressed! Frozen in Time haunts, then flows all over you like an incoming tide. This is but a teaser as (and I cannot believe this) the band have yet to release an LP but we are promised a debut album soon.... I need this record! [and as I type this another Morganway single has dropped - “Hurricane” just proves to me that an album would be awesome!]
Keith is a singer/songwriter I have known since his very early tentative appearances at open mic nights in Suffolk. It is always a pleasure to watch an artist develop both in talent and confidence. Song comes from the heart and deserves to be listened to not just simply played.
Lost in Blue KYANOS Kyanos is a new name to me. Theirs is a blend of laid back sound bordering
Like us on Facebook.com/GrapevineLIVE on jazz and with hints of psychedelia. It is tempting to compare bands to better known names to enable them to be put in a box... Not a game I llike to play. Kyanos’ sound is unique and very easy on the ear. I’m not sure if the band’s name is a reference to the Final Fantasy character...
Another band to have graced the GrapevineLIVE Ipswich Music Day stage. This band play what they like to describe as East Anglicana - a little known genre, growing fast! They admit that they are first and foremost a live band, enjoying the spontannaity of the moment where who knows what can happen. When the sleve notes inclue a comment on how one of their number enthusiastically chased pigeons away in order that their incessant cooing wouldn’t bleed onto the

vocal tracks, then you’ll realise that this is a band that don’t take themselves too seriously. Favourite track is Tony Winn’s “What’s The Moonlight For?”

I have a soft spot for an album that starts with a prelude played on electric keys! It always used to indicate something was going to start rockin’ the Little Red Kings don’t disappoint. This is classic blues rock played well and with feeling. This is yet another band I have to go and see live, my problem being when I can fit them in! Current favourite track on loop is “Chaperone”... Not many bands build their own studio - kudos for that alone, and the results go to prove it was worth doing.
Wow! This is Kev Walford at his songwriting best. Simple, story telling lyrics put together with timing to die for: “I like you, you like me.....” The pregnant pause that follows makes you stop what you are doing, dying to know what happens next! Kev has teamed up with the simply wonderful Reb Capper to create an EP gem which, if I had to find fault with, is only five tracks long. In Blue Shoes, Kev asks what if John & Paul had never got together... what if, what if Kev had met with Paul....? Coming soon... A New Way On BAYFIELD BOOTH Release date: 12th May 19

Crickey, is it really May already? I guess it’s time to dig out both the wellies and sunnies, seeing as it’s the start of the festival season! You may think festivals are all about live music playing out to a crowded muddy field, but there’s a rich and eclectic mix of theatre and arts festivals too. Kicking off proceedings is the Norfolk & Norwich Festival (10-26th May). Highlights include a world premiere at the Norwich Playhouse, of News News
Smashed Norfolk & Norwich Festival
News - a television news show made by children for adults, recorded in front of a studio audience and broadcast live on the internet. At a time when there is more news than there has ever been and yet our trust in journalists is at an alltime low, what is the purpose of news and how does it shape the way we see the world around us? User Not Found is a pioneering and intimate new play. You’re given a smartphone and a pair of headphones to be immersed in one man’s story as he’s faced with keeping or erasing his partner’s online existence. To celebrate award-winning Hoipolloi’s 25th anniversary there will be a trilogy of story-telling shows as Hugh Hughes presents Shôn Dale-Jones in The Duke, Me & Robin Hood and The Ladder. And there’s plenty more events running across the festival. Ipswich’s famed fringe festival, Pulse Festival returns 30th May – 8th June. Opening the festival is Status - a globespanning journey of attempted escape, with songs along the way. This year’s event also includes an intimate and exhilarating play about space science, mental health, and communication called Lights! Planets! People!, and features the return of multi awardwinning comedy blockbuster Police Cops to name but a few. Plus, the infamous Scratch Days and Suitcase Day are back, and new this year is the Funny Women Awards.

are free, and promise some weird and wonderful acts that will entertain all the family. Other festivals that are bound to give some great theatre, comedy, dance and spoken word offerings would be Southwold Arts Festival (22-29th June), Latitude (18-21st July) and the new for 2019 First Light Festival (22-23rd June) in Lowestoft – a festival celebrating the first light of midsummer’s weekend at Britain’s most easterly point with arts and science.

There really is a festival for everyone and everything these days, but they are a perfect way to connect with likeminded people and enjoy the British Summertime, as unpredictable as the weather may be – so get out there and choose a festival or two and get inspired by the arts!
Bury Festival (16-26th May) are offering a day of free Street Theatre (18th May) in the Abbey Gardens, meanwhile the National Youth Music Theatre return to the Theatre Royal with a new work called Growl (19th May), written by best-selling children’s author Timothy Knapman and with music by Laurence Mark Wythe. The East Anglian Storytelling Festival (14-16th June) moves to Elmswell with Nationally Renowned Storytellers such as Liz Weir MBE, Taffy Thomas MBE, Sef Townsend, Hugh Lupton, Paul Jackson and Baden Prince. Holt Festival (21-27th July) has an eclectic line-up including Poet Luke Wright and musical comedy sisters Flo & Joan. Later in the season, the Out There International Festival of Street Arts & Circus will be in Great Yarmouth, 1415th September. Most of the events
