Social Moments #2 INSTAGRAM A popular photo-sharing app to post and view images on the go. Did you know? Instagram was created in 2010 as a small project by two San Francisco-based developers. The name “Instagram” is a combination of “instant camera” and “telegram.” To begin … Download the app on your mobile device and register using your email or Facebook account. Choose a username, add a default picture, write a description – remember to include your website – and you’re ready to start posting! Where your photos can go … Be sure to set up your additional social media accounts (Profile > Settings > Share Settings) so you can share photos on other platforms. Instagram allows sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and foursquare. What you can’t do … Although you will have a website – www.instagram.com/USERNAME – you won’t be able to upload photos from your desktop. Instagram only allows users to upload from their mobile devices.
Best Practices • Follow relevant accounts to appear in their “Explore” tab. • Tag, tag, tag! The more accounts you tag in your photos, the more likely your photo will be seen by a wide range of Instagram users. Also, there’s a chance the account you tag will “regram” your photo, much like a retweet on Twitter. • Never upload blurry photos. Especially if you’re using Instagram to post a photo of your listing, make sure the photo is crisp and clear. • Try to use hashtags in your caption and limit the number of hashtags you use after your description. Hashtags on Instagram are a great way to increase the audience of your post but use them sparingly. Limit yourself to using no more than five hashtags per post. • Like and comment on others’ photos to increase the exposure of your Instagram account. • Always ask permission before uploading a photo your client may deem private or personal. • Remember that Instagram is a public forum, just like a Facebook business page, and photos should be appropriate and professional. • Be creative. Creativity on Instagram wins! How to Use Instagram in Your Business • Post behind-the-scenes images of your business. • Post listings or just-sold homes. • Post 15-second property tours. • Engage with local businesses, clients and consumers. • Add your location to a listing post to send those who view the photo to a map of the home. • Celebrate holidays, milestones and awards.
