Greetings, Art Enthusiasts!
The Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg, Inc. is thrilled to welcome you to the 47th annual Art on the Square. A heartfelt thank you goes to all those who have supported us over the years including the City of Williamsburg, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and The Merchants Square Association. Thank you as well to all of the sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and art lovers who join us each year to make Art on the Square such a successful event. It is with this support that in March of 2010, The Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg (JWCW) was able to donate nearly $17,000 to more than 25 local organizations benefiting the art community and art education.
year $3,800 will be awarded to local high school seniors who wish to further their education in the visual or performing arts at the college level. Please stop by the JWCW tent to purchase a commemorative poster and a few raffle tickets and, in turn, know that you are supporting future artistic talent in our community. With more than 165 exhibitors, featuring artists from 13 states who will display more than 15 different mediums, Art on the Square continues to be an important springtime tradition in Williamsburg. Thank you again for joining us and for supporting local artists and arts organizations. Enjoy the show and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

2010 Commemorative Poster “Fetch a Pail of Water” by Richard E. DePaul This yearís poster art, “Fetch a Pail of Water,” marks the 12th year that local artist, Richard DePaul has donated an original watercolor to the Junior Womanís Club of Williamsburg to support their fundraising efforts. “Since the annual Art on the Square show is held in April, I typically select a spring theme that highlights either one of Williamsburgís architectural gems or a more intimate garden scene,” DePaul explains. “This yearís painting features a beautifully proportioned well with a young woman, bucket in hand, coming through the gate to fetch a pail of water. The trees and shrubs show off their spring colors of pink, fresh yellow-greens and burgundy — typical of April colors here in Williamsburg.”
Proceeds from the sales of raffle tickets for the original work and poster sales the day of the show provide art scholarships for graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into a college level visual or performing arts program. “An art scholarship gave me the opportunity to attend Philadelphia College of Art. It literally changed my life. I am delighted to work with the Juniors to help potentially do the same for someone else.” Originally from the Philadelphia area, Richard and his wife moved to Williamsburg in 1987. “We feel very fortunate to live in an area so rich with history and natural beauty.”
Our Featured Artist – Richard E. DePaul Richard E. DePaul was born and educated in the Philadelphia area. When a business opportunity presented itself in 1987, Dick and his wife were delighted to move to Williamsburg. His interest in art goes back to his elementary school days. “I knew since my initial ‘art project’ in first grade that I wanted to do this when I grew up,” he said. His formal training began with Saturday art classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in his early teens. It was at that time he began combining his interest in art and his love of the outdoors, taking his oils along on hikes and stopping to paint the scenes that caught his eye. Upon graduation from Haverford High School, Dick was awarded a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art (now the Philadelphia University of the Arts), where he earned a degree in Industrial Design. For the next 40 years, Dick put his design skills to work managing design and development organizations for major paperboard packaging corporations. He holds over a dozen patents for unique packaging concepts which he developed during this time. During this time, marriage, children and his career took precedence over painting and drawing. After he retired from corporate life, his wife gave him a set of watercolors for Christmas and told him, “Go paint!” This revived an interest in his old “loves,” and he began the process of redeveloping his skills and technique. “My painting ‘style’ combines my love of drawing with my designer’s training: A good concept, plan, and execution result in a successful product — in this case a painting,” says Dick. He combines his artistic understanding of color,
composition, perspective, and painting skills with the designer’s tools and techniques, resulting in what he calls “manipulated realism.” His interest in history, architecture, and sailing, as well as his love of travel, has yielded a variety of work which features Williamsburg, Tidewater Virginia, and favorite travel destinations. As he explains, “I’ve achieved my objective if my work can be appreciated on more than one level. I want the color and feeling of a piece to allow the viewer to simply enjoy the scene. Then, as the piece is scrutinized, those with a particular knowledge of the subject should be able to further discern the degree of detail and precision. My goal is to provide an enjoyable visual trip through the ‘mini-scenes’ within the work as a whole.” Dick is pleased to be working with the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg again this year. “A scholarship permitted me to pursue my dream of working in the arts, and I am delighted to team up once again with such a fine organization of ladies to help raise funds for art scholarships for the next generation of visual and performing artists,” he says. Emily Kersey - My name is Emily Kersey, and I am a freshman dance major at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Since I received my scholarship from the Jr. Women’s Club of Williamsburg, I have been enjoying everything that UArts has to offer. UArts offers degree programs in a variety of art forms including the performing arts (dance performance, vocal performance, instrumental performance, musical theater, acting, directing, producing, etc), visual arts (painting, drawing, illustration, sculpting, metal work, photography, graphic design, etc), and media and communication (including writing for film and television). It is amazing to be a part of a community of students and administrators who share such a passion for their art! As a dance major the majority of my classes are dance classes that take place in the studio. The rest of my classes are liberal arts, the majority of which are closely related to my major. I was lucky enough to be cast in two senior dance pieces this fall semester! Both were great experiences, and I cannot wait to perform again! I truly feel that UArts is the perfect fit for me and that it will prepare me for my dream career as a performer. I am so grateful for the scholarship I received from the Jr. Women’s Club of Williamsburg, and for the opportunities and experiences that are yet to come. Molly Korroch - I’m at Ithaca College pursuing a Vocal Performance degree. I am also in the midst of applying to the film school so that I may double major in voice and screenwriting. My classes are wonderful. I especially look forward to my voice lessons during the week— my teacher is fabulous. I recently auditioned into an upper level chorus for next semester— which I am very pleased and grateful for! This “Women’s Chorale” is going to be touring in and around Philadelphia in February. So, I am working very hard on catching up to everything they learned last semester so that I will be ready for the coming performances! Ithaca is fantastic— a very unique little town that my friends and I are enjoying getting to know. It is, indeed, a special experience to consciously work toward a dream.

About and the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg ART ON THE SQUARE is dedicated to providing an art show that offers original, high quality, handcrafted and diverse mediums of art. This juried art show is traditionally held in the spring on the last Sunday of April and is organized and hosted by an enthusiastic group of young women, members of the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg. Now in its 47th year, ART ON THE SQUARE is one of the club’s principal fundraisers to support community art initiatives. Proceeds from today’s booth rentals will be donated to visual and performing arts organizations to promote arts and cultural awareness throughout the greater Williamsburg area including Williamsburg, James City and York counties. As a result of this show, we are able to support such worthwhile organizations as the Williamsburg Symphonia,
This Century Art Gallery, Williamsburg Youth Orchestra, Stagelights, Williamsburg-JCC Fine Arts Program, Early Childhood Music School, Flute Frenzy and many others. Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets and show posters support our Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg Art Scholarships, which are awarded to talented local high school students to further their arts educations. If you would like more information about ART ON THE SQUARE, an artist application for future shows or information on applying for a donation for your organization, please write to: Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg P.O.
