Spring has been toying with us since February when 70-degree weekends seemed to be the norm. But April will soon be upon us and spring is inevitable: if you still have doubts, this month’s offerings of what to do in and around Williamsburg will have you believing. Historic Garden Week takes place across the state in April, and our day to bloom is April 25. The tour begins at the house of the president of the College of William and Mary and goes from there. Take the family along on a journey back in time and spend an afternoon outdoors on the Dinosaur Discovery Trail at the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News. In addition to coming face-to-face with a T-Rex, kids can dig for fossils and visit the Paleo camp. For those seeking a more strenuous outdoor adventure, check out – either by running or watching and cheering participants – the Singletrack Maniac 50K at Freedom Park. The 31-mile foot race gets underway at 7 a.m. on April 1. When the sniffing and digging and sweating are done, take time to treat yourself to a relaxing Sunday brunch at any one of the area’s fine local restaurants. Linger over a memorable Bloody Mary or the rich Hollandaise on a favorite Eggs Benedict while planning your next great spring adventure with friends and family. Don’t linger too long; summer is right around the corner.

The long and winding Singletrack Maniac 50K road By Troy Jefferson The Singletrack Maniac 50K at Freedom Park kicks off April with a bang. The fifth running of the 50k foot race – about 31miles -- will take place April 1, starting at 7 a.m. and lasting until 5 p.m. “It’s usually a very friendly group of participants,” said Ellen Womeldorf, race director. “Overall it’s a low-key vibe, very low stress.” There will be awards for the top three finishers. Womeldorf said the hardest part for her is reserving county facilities and finding volunteers. The race
was organized and directed by James City County Parks and Recreation. Colonial Road Runners also partnered with the county. North Face is sponsoring the event and will provide gift bags for runners at the conclusion of the race Womeldorf said she hoping for about 100-125 runners. She said each year the race grows by about 20 people -- not including a growing number of spectators. “It ends up being a nice little group of people to cheer people on,” Womeldorf said. Music heralds the reopening of Watermen’s Museum By Wesley Wright The Watermen's Museum, dedicated to keeping the legacy of those who worked on the Chesapeake Bay alive, reopens for the season April 1 and a full slate of activities are planned. April 12 is the York River Floating Folk Jam, a free event where those in attendance can join museum staff for an evening of song and dance -- you can even bring your own instrument if you so choose. Bring your friends and family for a night of fun. The festivities start at 5:30 p.m. Speaking of music, you can learn how to swing dance on April 17. If you don't have a companion or if you have no idea how to swing dance, this lesson is for you. Those interested should show up at 5 p.m. and the classes are just $5 per person.

ing to visual and performing arts organizations throughout Greater Williamsburg. Art on the Square is dedicated to providing original, high quality, handcrafted and diverse mediums of art. Artists will display and sell their work from booths along the Merchants Square streets, judged in several categories including ceramics, painting, photography, jewelry, 3-D and 2-D art. The Art on the Square tradition is nearly as longstanding as the JWCW itself. The club was founded in 1954 as a "volunteer organization for civic-minded women," according to its website. JWCW supports a variety of charities and community services through financial and volunteer assistance, holding multiple fundraising events each year including Whistle Belly, Brews that Benefit and Breakfast with Santa. Those interested in having past Art on the Square posters framed, or in purchasing past posters should visit Walls Alive at 4264 Casey Boulevard in New Town.

Botanical Garden packs a lot into small space By Brandy Centolanza When heading outdoors this spring, be sure to add the Williamsburg Botanical Garden to your list of places to visit. Williamsburg Botanical Garden, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, is a demonstration garden for plants that are suitable for landscapes in Virginia’s Coastal Plain. The garden is nestled on a two-acre plot within James City County’s Freedom Park. The garden, which is free and open daily to the public, is divided into nearly two dozen sections and includes a native plant area; an heirloom garden; a therapy garden; an herb garden; a butterfly garden; sections for perennials, fernery, wildflowers, daffodils, and native grasses; and other attractions. Volunteers from Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, The College of William & Mary and others from the community assist with maintenance, educational programming, and garden tours. “Our volunteers are all good workers and really fun,” said Karen Jamison, chairperson for the Williamsburg Botanical Garden Board. Jamison has been with the garden since its inception in 2005. “The garden is a wonderful asset to our community,” Jamison said. “It is truly a community garden.” Joanne Sheffield has been a volunteer for the past three years and is board secretary. She also schedules and oversees the adult programming and has worked in 14

the therapy garden with special needs clients. “I really enjoy the therapy garden,” Sheffield said. “I also love learning about all the different plants that can be found in the garden, and planning programs for the adults. It’s been a lot of fun.” On April 15, Les Parks with Norfolk Botanical Garden will give a presentation on “The Best Perennials for Tidewater.” On April 22, Williamsburg Botanical Garden will host its spring plant sale. Other program topics this
season include gardens without flowers; rain gardens; creative ideas for small yards and gardens; butterfly gardens; ferns; and medicinal herbs. Children’s programming for this year includes rock painting; learning about birds in your backyard; and safety around animals featuring the Heritage Humane Society. One of Nicole D’Alessandro’s sons has participated in two of the garden’s children’s art programs. “He loved it,” she said. “He was able to paint, draw, and sketch
flowers from the botanical garden. It really helped him grow as an artist. It helped to improve his technique and boost his confidence. I think it’s a great program, and the people who run it are extremely friendly and helpful.” Williamsburg Botanical Garden also hosts weddings, a Music in the Garden Concert Series, two plant sales, and a Butterfly Festival. This year’s festival is slated for the first weekend in August. Numerous community organizations sponsor and partner with Williamsburg Botanical Garden on improvement projects and additions. The garden is funded
through grants and public donations. Last year, a paver walkway near the garden’s entrance was completed, and, this year, Jamison hopes the garden will have electricity installed. In March, the garden won a beautification award in honor of Arbor Day, won of many it has accumulated over the years. Kimberley Koprowski likes to frequent the garden with her two young sons to watch butterflies and birds wander about. Williamsburg Botanical Garden is “peaceful and, of course, beautiful,” she said.

Garden Week set to bloom across Virginia, in Williamsburg By Troy Jefferson Historic Garden Week in Williamsburg is more an experience than an event. “Garden Week is a statewide project of the garden clubs of Virginia. This is its 84th year,” said Linda Wenger, “You can pick localities that you’re interested in or you can just come to Williamsburg. For us, it’s always the fourth Tuesday of April.” Williamsburg will celebrate the week with a nine-garden property tour at two locations that will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 25 beginning at 1 Alumni Drive. Shuttles will be provided between the two locations. Garden Week begins on April 22 and ends April 29. The clubs have raised $425 million over the last 45 years because of Garden Week, according to the Virginia's Historic Garden Week. “Historic Garden Week has raised millions of dollars to keep Virginia beautiful,” said Lynn

McCashin, executive director of the week, in a statement. “The grounds of Virginia’s most cherished landmarks including Mount Vernon and Stratford Hall have been restored with tour proceeds. As the Garden Club of Virginia approaches its Centennial in 2020, we are also supporting Virginia State Parks with a portion of HGW proceeds.” Wenger said the money raised goes to restoring the gardens in the state. Wenger said the one day tour usually attracts about a 1,000 people. “In 2012, we had 1,700 because of the beautiful weather,” Wenger said. The tour is a ticketed event, which requires a Historic Garden Week ticket. Advance-sale tickets are $40; they’re $50 on the day of the tour. Tickets have been on sale since March. Chalk and Family Fest draws artists to New Town By Jimmy LaRoue Dust off your artist’s beret and get ready to create. The annual New Town Chalk and Family Fest will take place Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Sullivan Square in New Town on 4301 New Town Ave. A chalk drawing contest will take place and costs $10 to enter. There will be categories for amateur, professional, high school and under-12 years old. The entry fee includes chalk and artists will have a 4X4 square in which to draw. The drawing contest starts at 10 a.m. with judging set for 4 p.m. Among the other activities will be a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, kids’ games and more. Opera in Williamsburg presents ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ By Jimmy LaRoue The Marriage of Figaro will present a challenge to the Opera in Williamsburg cast taking part in a pair of April performances at the intimate Kimball Theatre. For starters, Opera in Williamsburg’s founder and artistic director Naama Zahavi-Ely said the cast for The Marriage of Figaro, a live, fully staged opera conducted in Italian with English supertitles, is larger than the typical opera. And, it’s also the first time the opera company is using a chamber orchestra. In the past, ZahaviEly said the opera’s productions were accompanied by a piano and several instruments. “Opera in Williamsburg keeps the action in the present time and creates a lovingly detailed production with carefully delineated, sympathetic characters,” Zahavi-Ely said. “We have a terrific cast – superb singers-actors who are each an outstanding fit for their roles.” The opera, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, will feature a pair of performances on Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. at the 400-seat Kimball Theatre on 424 West Duke of Gloucester Street. Opera in Williamsburg, along with the America Israel Cultural Foundation, are partnering in the presentation of Marriage of Figaro. Velez and Eric Lindsey recently participated in Opera in Williamsburg’s Evening of Passion and Love concert at the Williamsburg Art Gallery and also performed at the School of the Arts at Bruton High School. In addition to the performances, there are two chances to meet the cast and creative team prior to the performance. The first comes on April 12 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Eitan Drori at the Williamsburg Art Gallery next door to the Kimball Theatre. There will also be a dinner-concert and silent auction fundraiser for Opera of Williamsburg on April 18 at the Colonial Heritage clubhouse at 6500 Arthur Hills Drive. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m., concert-only seating at 7:15 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. The dinner and concert will cost $48, while the concert itself is $28. Brunch: It’s not for the faint of heart By Brandy Centolanza Do you prefer breakfast or lunch? Why not have both? Local restaurants offer up a variety of brunch options so you don’t have to choose between the two meals. Brunch is trendy and, while Williamsburg has its abundance of pancake houses, other restaurants are stepping up their game with specialty drinks, entertainment and a unique dining experience. “Sunday is considered a true day of relaxation, the last day for most to enjoy a good meal with family and friends before returning to the work week,” 22

shared Ann Green, manager of The Trellis Restaurant in Merchants Square. The Trellis serves brunch every Sunday, and features a live jazz band. The menu includes French toast with bourbon syrup, omelets, breakfast platters, and, of course, adult beverages such as Bloody Marys, mimosas and Bellinis. “We have a great variety of choices on the menu, but we are always looking to add new items on that are seasonally available,” said Green. The Green Leafe Pub & Tavern in downtown Williamsburg also has brunch specials. Options at the British-style pub include Belgian waffles, biscuits and gravy, deep fried French toast, shrimp and grits,
salmon BLT, shepherd’s pie, pot roast, and soup. “What makes our brunch unique is the food and the ambience,” said Michelle Elliott, a managing partner with The Green Leafe. “We make our items in-house including the sauces, dressings, gravy, and grits. We have 40 craft beers on draft, an extensive spirit list, and we support a local company out of Richmond called Texas Beach Bloody Mary Mix. Two William and Mary alumni created this amazing mix that is vegan and glutenfree.” Craft 31, which opened last summer on Strawberry Plains Road, recently added a jazz brunch. Their Blood Mary is a must-have---in fact, the restaurant has a Bloody Mary bar---as are the funnel cake pancakes and the breakfast pizza. Brunch “seems to be a nice after church treat and a convenient time for families to dine together,” said Jessica Smith, director of sales and marketing for Craft 31 and Opus 9 Steakhouse in New Town. “Opus 9 also features live jazz and a buffet. The Opus Eggs Benedict are amazing. There is so much to choose from every Sunday, you can’t possibly eat it all.” Other restaurants that offer musical entertainment for a relaxing Sunday brunch include Berret’s Seafood Restaurant, which routinely hosts a Blues brunch; and Blue Talon Bistro, which recently hosted a New Orleans Jazz Brunch in honor of Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th Birthday. Waypoint Seafood & Grill, meanwhile, will serve special brunch fare for Easter, Mothers’ Day, and Fathers’ Day. Five Forks Café, a traditional American dinner on John Tyler Highway, is also a hot spot for breakfast on the weekends, as well as Honey Butters Kitchen, which has locations in Monticello Marketplace and on Richmond Road. Honey Butters Kitchen serves breakfast from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. six days a week and begins serving lunch at 11 a.m., allowing for an overlap in the meals for those who can’t decide between the two. “A bigger breakfast later in the day appeals to people,” said Jason Steeg, owner of Honey Butters Kitchen. “People seem to enjoy it.” Photos courtesy of The Green Leafe Pub & Tavern

Gallery honors its connections to nature By Brandy Centolanza A Touch of Earth, an American craft gallery, has been a Williamsburg staple since the 1970s. Original owners and spouses Lianne Lurie and Paul Pittman opened the shop on Richmond Road in Lightfoot in 1977. “I’ve been an artist my entire life,” Lurie explained. “I remember the respect my parents had for fine art and craft along with an avid desire to protect and preserve our Earth. Both Paul and I had parents who instilled in us the importance of remaining true to this philosophy and allowed us to pursue our goals within our own boundaries with love and support 24

from them. Living a lifestyle as artists and owners of a small fine art and craft gallery for the past 40 years has been our way of honoring our parents for their belief in us.” Both Lurie and Pittman are primarily potters, with Lurie working mostly by hand and her husband behind the pottery wheel. Pittman worked as an interpretive potter at Historic Jamestown before he and Lurie decided to start their business. When A Touch of Earth first opened, the pair sold their own pottery and later began featuring work by other artisans when the shop relocated in 1988 to its current location in The Gallery Shops shopping center. All merchandise is original
artwork from artists locally and across the country. The pair chose the name A Touch of Earth for the shop “because of a love for clay and the pursuit of creating an art form from sensitive and ever-changing material,” noted Lurie. A Touch of Earth carries original art pottery, jewelry, glass, wood, metal, fiber art, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media paintings. Pieces from nearly three dozen local and regional artists are represented in the store along with many others from across America. “We like to feature devoted, passionate people who are truly interested in what they do,” Lurie said. “One of the greatest rewards has been meeting all the artists we work with.” These days, Lurie and Pittman are the only ones who work at the gallery, which leaves little time to pursue their own art. However, the owners’ original artwork from the 1970s and 1980s remains on display. Among the couple’s pieces are pots, boxes, and trademarked candle lanterns called Gloom Chasers that have been sold internationally. The unique candle holders feature hand-carved nature designs including birds, butterflies, and flowers. “I love it when someone else enjoys my art and the artwork of others in the gallery,” Lurie said. “It thrills my soul. I want people to havee an appreciation for art. We are always aware of how important it is to provide sincere interest in our customers, who have been supportive to us over many years.” Her advice for other business owners? “Believe in your product, and have a love for people and a strong desire to do everything you can to make a customer feel welcome and remember the experience and want to return,” Lurie said.

Decorating Den offers a design for any space By Victoria Terrinoni When Amy Ahearn burned out on her job as a high school English teacher, she looked for something much different. So she he got a degree in interior design, worked for several designers beginning in 1998 and bought the Decorating Den franchise in 2016. 32

“The industry has so many segments you need some experience to determine which path to go down,” Ahearn said. She specialized in kitchen design for 15 years. Other specialties include use of color, lighting and hospitality. “It is a very intricate industry,” she said. Ahearn wraps several of those specialties into one as a residential
interior designer. As part of her services, she offers a complimentary consultation where she tours the home noticing the architectural style and the homeowner’s personal style. “I notice every little item in a space,” she said. Then she asks some probing questions to discover what the homeowner likes, and especially what they don’t like. She finds out
the decorating needs and the budget and builds a design she thinks will work in that home. “It’s not a home run every time I come back. It rarely is. Sometimes it needs tweaking a little,” Ahearn said. Decorating Den is the largest home furnishings franchise in North America with about 300 franchises in the United States and Canada, Ahearn said. The company provides products from floor to ceiling. Carpeting, furniture, lighting, window treatments, cabinetry and design – Ahearn offers it all. Right now she has 15 clients in various stages of development in the Williamsburg and James City County area. “Design is specialized and individual. People beat themselves up because they don’t know what to do. But they aren’t trained designers,” she said. An interior designer can help save money in the long run by helping a client avoid buying items that don’t work in a room, Ahearn said. Often trying to design a space requires going to several different stores for furniture, carpeting, paint, lighting and it is hard to know if everything will work together in the room. Ahearn solves the problem by showing her clients a cohesive design.

By Wesley Wright If you’re interested in a brisk bike ride with other cycling enthusiasts in the area, consider joining the Williamsburg Winery Cycling Club for rides on Sunday mornings through the month of April. You can go on a 40-mile ride with one group at a pace of around 15 to 18 miles per hour or you can cruise with a second group of riders, who have a 25-miles trip at a pace of 11 to 14 miles per hour. There is no fee to participate, just bring is your bike and a willingness to ride it. The ride goes through much of the pristine Historic Triangle area, and ends with wine and brunch with the same people who accompanied you on the trip. Riders enjoy a 15 percent discount at the Gabriel Archer Tavern redeemable only on the day of the ride. Registration for the rides starts at 8:30 on the scheduled day of the ride, and groups leave on their respective treks at 9:00 a.m. sharp. The winery is located at 5800 Wessex Hundred in Williamsburg.

Museum offers kids and families a blast from the long-ago past By Brandy Centolanza Does your child have a fixation with Tyrannosaurus Rex? Time to plan a trip to Virginia Living Museum in Newport News, where a new interactive exhibit will enable your children to frolic among real-life replicas of a T-Rex, Stegosaurus or Triceratops, dig for fossils and learn all about dinosaurs, while having fun. The Dinosaur Discovery Trail, which opened in October, is designed for children up to age seven, 36

though families with kids of all ages will enjoy everything the new permanent attraction has to offer. Fred Farris, the museum’s deputy director, said dinosaurs have been a huge part of the museum’s summer exhibits and programs on a rotating basis since the 1990s. “Kids have always been fascinated with dinosaurs,” he said. So much so that museum staff decided to transform an underutilized section of the museum’s outdoor boardwalk into a dinosaur oasis for families
to explore and discover through hands-on activities. The exhibit’s opening coincided with Virginia Living Museum’s 50th anniversary celebration. The Dinosaur Discovery Trail showcases 16 realistic, one-third to full-size replicas of dinosaurs from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Along the trail, guests will find a mini-Ankylosaur, a 16-foot Brachiosaurus, a Velociraptor, a giant Pteranodon, and a baby T-Rex as well as other baby dinosaurs and dinosaur nests. The trail also includes a Paleo camp, dig pits for would-be paleontologists, and discovery huts with fossil displays. Placing the dinosaurs in an exhibit outside “in a natural wooded setting makes them look like they really belong,” said Farris. “There is a rustic, field look to it. Having the actual fossils also adds real science to the subject.” Among the real and replica fossils on display are a leg bone, a T-Rex footprint and skull, vertebrae, a Deinonychus skeleton, a Maiasaur egg shell, an Apatosaurus footprint, a Stegosaurus plate, dinosaur coprolites (fossilized feces), and dinosaur gastroliths (stomach stones). The Dinosaur Discovery Trail also houses a children’s play area with dig pits, an oversized block area, and a giant rib cage crawler playground. “Allowing kids to play and discover and use their imagination is the best
thing,” said Farris. “It’s been really working well. Kids can spend hours out there.” Mish Kara of James City County recently visited the exhibit with her grandchildren. “My seven-year-old granddaughter is really into dinosaurs right now, and she was in heaven,” said Kara. “She just loved it. It was really neat. They did a good job with it. The fossils and bones give you an idea of what the dinosaurs were really like, and shows the kids that these were real things.” Jill Pyles, another James City County mother, agreed. “The dinosaur models are very lifelike, and you feel like you are really at a wilderness excavation site with the little hut buildings in the archaeological camp,” Pyles said. “My son enjoyed digging and building like a little archaeologist. It was fun for the adults too, very lively and interactive.” Farris is looking forward to more families coming

to check out the trail now that the warmer weather has set in. “I love walking by there on the boardwalk and hearing the hum of kids playing and having fun, and seeing their eyes light up,” said Farris. “I really enjoy seeing the kids engaged.” Farris hopes to switch out the fossils in the huts every now and then to keep the exhibits fresh, and would also like to eventually add more materials and programs for older children. “Dinosaur digs are always ongoing in the country, and there are new discoveries every day,” he said.
