A good bounce Suppose it is 100 degrees outside and the kids are rambunctious inside. You can bounce on over to Inflation Nation on Richmond Road and let the kids expend some energy. The indoor inflatable playground opened last summer and has enjoyed continuous and growing visitation. “We want people to come back over and over,” said owner Chris Mitchell. He and his wife, Stephanie, opened the attraction last July. “And the only way that can happen is to have a friendly, family atmosphere.” And that’s what Mitchell and his staff strive to provide daily. When you enter the facility, located in
Patriot Plaza, you will see kids ranging from ages 112 bouncing on huge inflatables having themes ranging from Disney princesses to Superman. Adults seem to like it as much as their kids. “People say they like the cleanliness of our facility,” Mitchell said. “When they come in it is open, clean and the inflatables are a lot larger than what they may have thought.” Birthday parties have really taken off. On a typical weekend, Inflation Nation hosts some 25 parties for youngsters. Lately, older kids have wanted their parties there. “We are starting to get teen birthday parties,” Mitchell said. Those are booked after regular hours, he noted. And older teens are getting in the act as well. “Club Nation” was held recently for kids 6th-12th grades. The facility was outfitted with black lights, music provided by a DJ and lots of teen-friendly snacks. Since Mitchell introduced the events, attendance has soared. “The first one of these we had, fifty kids came,” Mitchell said. “We are expecting about 400 in the next one we have planned. Obviously the kids that came in the beginning had enough fun for them to tell their friends about it.” The Mitchells own another store in the Richmond area. That facility has even hosted birthday parties for grown-ups, including a surprise 65th birthday party for a Richmond grandmother. “She had a blast,” Mitchell said with a laugh. Mitchell said Inflation Nation regularly hosts fundraisers for area schools and PTAs. There may even be after-prom parties booked at the facility. –Ann Efimetz

Diamond anniversary for state parks Have you ever visited one of the area’s state parks? This may be a jewel of a time to make the trip, as Virginia State Parks are celebrating their diamond anniversary this year. Our area boasts several parks that provide a great getaway for people of all ages. Take a short drive or bike trip and explore all that awaits. York River State Park The park takes its name from the river along its border. It is located about 10 miles west of Williamsburg near Croaker. It offers the chance to experience the rich habitat of marine and plant life that results from the meeting of fresh and salt water. The park offers a host of outdoor recreations including biking trails and walking trails, fishing and hiking. There’s a playground for kids and plenty of activities for the whole family. Chippokes Plantation State Park Chippokes Plantation State Park is situated located on the southern shore of the James River, located across the river from Jamestown Island. According to the park’s website, since the establishment of Chippokes in 1619 the land has been
continuously farmed making it one of the oldest plantations in America. Today, 19th and 20th century buildings tell the story of early plantation life in rural America. Chippokes Plantation is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. The main entrance to Chippokes is accessible from Alliance Road which is off of Route 10 in Surry County. In July, Chippokes will host the 36th annual Pork, Peanut & Pine Festival. The event features an arts & crafts show, entertainment, food and fun activities for the entire family. Visit www.porkpeanutpinefestival.org.

Meet Lord Botetourt
If you have ever visited the Wren Courtyard at the College of William & Mary, you have likely met him. The statue of Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, holds watch over the College Yard in front of the Sir Christopher Wren Building. Ever wonder about the statue’s history? According to information from the College of William & Mary about the statue, Botetourt was the popular royal governor of Virginia 1768-1770. He was a friend and patron of W&M during his tenure. 14
He served as rector of the Board of Visitors and established a fund for the purchase of gold medals to be awarded annually to two students for academic excellence. When Lord Botetourt died in 1770, he was honored with an elaborate funeral and buried in the crypt under the chapel of the Wren Building. The following year, Virginia’s House of Burgesses

Jordan Luck College of William & Mary graduate student Jordan Luck became interested in helping at the Center for Excellence in Aging and Geriatric Health last spring. He had attended a workshop presented by Christine Jensen, the center’s director of community and health services research, and Herman Lukow, a doctoral student in W&M’s counselor education program. Luck decided to get involved. “I’m pursuing a master’s in marriage and family counseling and the workshops focused on informing counselors of the issues facing mature adults and their families,” Luck said. “My role as a caregiver in my family of origin is what kept me interested and ultimately led me to look for an internship at the Center with Dr. Jensen.” Luck has volunteered in planning and advertising for three focus groups related to a grant given to the center by the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation. The grant has opened the door for the center to study the formation of an adult day center in greater Williamsburg. He has most recently transcribed the happenings of each session to show the full picture of group discussions. “I have found the most pleasure in seeing each focus group get together and become excited about the prospect of an adult day center in the area,” Luck said. He has enjoyed the work and admits he has learned a lot about group dynamics. “I’ve been surprised that groups of mostly strangers can put their heads together and come up with such great ideas and recommendations to help other people,” Luck said. “I’ve seen such excitement in these groups that it really bolsters my faith in humanity as a whole.” Luck said he is gratified with the work that he has done on what he considers to be worthwhile projects. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, APRIL 2011
“Doing this work is important to help move our community on to a stronger future,” he said. “While I gain a great experience and wonderful connections, what matters more is that the community has a chance to gain a great asset and resource to those in need.” –Ann Efimetz

Point A to Point B The onset of the spring and summer means more people visiting our area. That means that getting around town will heat up. The Historic Triangle Shuttle, the public transportation service connecting Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, will start daily operations April 15 and continue through Oct. 31. The shuttle is free, provided by the National Park Service. Two routes of the shuttle leave every 30 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. One route travels the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown and the other follows the parkway to Yorktown. Additional shuttle services are available at Jamestown and Yorktown to various area attractions. The Jamestown Area Shuttle provides continuous service between Historic Jamestowne, the Glasshouse, Jamestown Settlement and Jamestown Information Station. For additional information about the Historic Triangle Shuttle services, call 898-2410 or visit www.nps.gov/colo/planyourvisit/publictransportation.htm The Yorktown Trolley provides service between the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center and the Yorktown Victory Center, as well as several stops between in the historic village, including Riverwalk Landing. Visit www.yorkcounty.gov for more information and hours. The Williamsburg Trolley is a great way to get around town. HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Colonial Evening Performances (Additional tickets required) The fun in Colonial Williamsburg doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. During “Ghosts Amongst Us,” meet the ghosts of Williamsburg that still roam today. Determine the guilt or innocence of the “Virginia witch” during “Cry Witch.” Help keep alive the songs and dances adapted from the West Africans in the colonial American period during “African American Music.” Enjoy the type of variety show that entertained George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during “A Grand Medley of Entertainments.” Stop by any Colonial Williamsburg ticket office to make reservations for evening programs. Easter story on stage at CrossWalk CrossWalk Community Church in Norge will again present the musical extravaganza, “The Living Passover” for 13 performances. The production is directed by Greg Ashley, and features a cast of about 125 people of all ages. The production takes year-round planning and represents hundreds of volunteer hours. “It consumes the church for the first quarter of the year,” Ashley said recently. “This is part of our outreach to the community.” Last year 11 performances drew more than 6,200 people to the 700-seat theater. Some performances were sold out. Ashley reports that this year ticket sales are brisk, with a considerable jump in group sales from people as far away as Pennsylvania. “We were completely blown away last year that we had such a large response,” he said. “And this year we are really picking up momentum with our group sales.” The show features visual effects including live animals, pyrotechnics, lavish costumes and pageantry. The goal is to make the Scriptures come alive for the audience. While the story of Christ’s Passion remains unchanged, Ashley writes a secondary storyline that is interwoven throughout. This year the perspective will highlight the women who were his followers. “Each year we have a different theme to keep it fresh,” he explained. “This year it will focus about the women in the New Testament who played a significant role in Jesus’ ministry and the strength they had in supporting him.” The role of Jesus will be played by Scott Venable, who has been involved with the production for the past two years. Ashley held open auditions for the roles and many of the actors are not CrossWalk members. “That is very neat because you have a blending of different faith experiences with the same mindset and purpose,” he said. The production also offers people the opportunity to have a meal before some of the performances. Choices include roasted chicken and lamb. Tickets 38
can be purchased to include dinner, or without. Ashley credits all the people who work with him to make the production a memorable and powerful experience for the audience. “I really have a great team of people, it is amazing,” he said. “It really takes a whole village to make this happen.” – Ann Efimetz

Taking stock at Colonial Williamsburg Have you ever put your head in the stocks at the Historic Area? If you have you aren’t alone. The stocks provide a great photo opportunity for those traversing Duke of Gloucester Street, adjacent to the Courthouse. Stocks and pillories were historically used in punishment, securing a person’s head and hands in the devices with a lock. The stocks are very popular with visiting school groups. You will often see a line of kids waiting to have their photos taken with friends. Families love it too. Try it next time you are walking through the Historic Area.

the pulpit
Christ Community Church The Rev. Randy Garner said he felt the call of the Lord on his heart to move to Williamsburg to start a church. “I moved here with a calling and passion for this area to share the love of Christ with people,” Garner said recently. “And thirteen years later, I have not lost that passion for my community.” Christ Community Church had its first Sunday morning service in October of 1997 in what was then was the newly opened Jamestown High. The church now has its own building, located in Toano at 9001 Richmond Road, just past Anderson’s Corner. The congregation is continually growing, with about 200 people worshipping at the church weekly. Christ Community is a Wesleyan Church, an evangelical, Protestant denomination. Ministries emphasize practical Bible teaching, uplifting worship and special programs designed to help people in many stages of life. Worship at the church incorporates carefully selected music and a service that conveys a simple message that relates to where people are living today. The goal is to provide people with what they need spiritually to walk through all the circumstances of their lives. His goal as pastor? “To share the life-changing message of Jesus with as many people as possible,” he said. “I want to model the love of Christ to my wife, my church family, and the community. And I want to keep growing a healthy church that will make an impact in our community and around the world.”

Shortly after press time last month, the Virginia Arts Festival announced a change to its lineup for Festival Williamsburg. Tony Award-winner Jane Krakowski was scheduled to perform at 5:30 and 8 p.m., Sunday, May 29 in the Virginia Room at the Williamsburg Lodge. However, Krokowski requested to cancel her engagement with the Festival as she is expecting a baby, due in late spring. Taking her place will be Lynda Carter, who is likely best known for her work on the TV series, “Wonder Woman.” Performance times remain the same. To order tickets visit www.virginiaartsfest.com.

Easter hops in late Unlike many holidays with fixed dates, the date of Easter is not. That’s because it’s tied to the full moon and the vernal equinox Christian churches that follow the Gregorian calendar celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the paschal full moon on or just after the vernal equinox. Eastern Orthodox churches follow the Julian calendar. Due to these different methods of calculation, the Eastern and Western churches often celebrate the feast on different days. This year Easter falls on Sunday, April 24. To celebrate the season, James City County Parks & Recreation and the City of Williamsburg Parks & Recreation will co-sponsor the annual Easter Egg Hunt. It is scheduled 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at the WISC soccer fields located at Warhill District Park off Longhill Road. It’s free and those who wish to participate should bring their own basket or bag to collect eggs. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, APRIL 2011
Hunt times are: Walking-2 years, 10 a.m.; 3 years,10:15 a.m., 4 years, 10:30 a.m.; 5 years, 10:45 a.m.; 6 years, 11 a.m. and 7 years, 11:15 a.m. For more information, call 259-4200 or 2593760. Williamsburg Christian Church on John Tyler Lane will hold its annual Eggstravaganza 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, April 23. It will feature the egg hunt, inflatables, games, food, cotton candy and popcorn. Chambrel of Williamsburg will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 16. The event is free and open to the public for children ages walking through age 8. The event will feature face painting, prizes, games, and a special magic show by Magician Harold Wood. There will also be an appearance by Peter Cottontail. New this year is that the even will have an Easter Bonnet Parade. Those who attend can wear an Easter Bonnett. Registration is limited. Call 2201839 to RSVP.

Monsignor Michael McCarron Being a Roman Catholic priest or pastor means that you never stay in one place permanently. A pastor may lead a parish for five, ten or even 15 years. Then, as needs in a diocese arise, a priest or pastor gets another assignment and begins again with a new family of faith. If you ask Rev. Monsignor Michael McCarron, pastor of St. Bede Catholic Church, what that experience has been like for him, he doesn’t miss a beat when responding. “It is hard to leave a parish behind because you love the people and it becomes home,” McCarron said in a recent interview. “But that is what it means to be a pastor and a priest. You do it because the Lord asks you to do it. And when the bishop says it is time to go, you assume that the Lord has already moved ahead of you to where ever you are going.” Most recently in McCarron’s life of ministry that spans more than three decades, he arrived to Williamsburg. He came last summer after leaving Chesapeake where he served as the pastor of St. Stephen, Martyr for five years. Prior to St. Stephen’s he had been the pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport News for 15 years. Since he’s been here, he said he’s been extremely impressed with the welcome he has received. “It has been wonderful,” McCarron said. “The people here have exceeded my expectations. They are very gracious, and are really a very talented group of folks.” Some 3,700 families call St. Bede their church home. It is the largest parish church in our area and one of the largest in the Richmond Diocese. That means there’s a lot of activity happening on a daily basis, and the pastor’s schedule can be hectic. In addition to celebrating Mass and the sacraments, the affable McCarron oversees a parish staff of nearly 30, leads parish administration, meets with individuals who seek spiritual guidance and teaches educational programs designed to help people better live their faith. When he has spare time, you may find him antiquing at area shops or walking his new dog, Sir Jackson Timothy, a miniature schnauzer that recently became a resident at the St. Bede rectory. He also enjoys antique cars and owns a 1951 Packard and a 1965 Impala Super Sport. “When you are an antique collector, you get into gadgets,” he
said with a laugh. “Antique cars are big gadgets that do things.” Despite his gregarious personality, McCarron has quietness about him when speaking of his vocation. He said his love of Jesus is what keeps him moving forward to discover what God next has in store for him, whatever that may be. His goal is to know and love God more and to share the message of hope and salvation with all those who cross his path. And that faith is the source of his happiness. “There is nothing that I could ever think of that would be a trade for this life,” he said. “It is a wonderful life.” As for now, he has finally figured out where to eat in town on a Friday night without having to wait in line for hours, where to get the best Greek food and where to find great antiques. “I do feel very much at home in Williamsburg,” he said with a nod. “It is a neat place to be.” – Ann Efimetz
