WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2015
David Nicholson dbnicholson@vagazette.com August iis a hot one, but it is summer after all, and the region offers wonderful outdoor activities not to be missed. Here are some of the things we’re profiling in this month’s Williamsburg Magazine. If you’re looking for a truly fun excursion, check out our feature on Chesapeake Bay Adventures. Brothers Jamie and Starkey Moore will take you out on their high-powered airboat for an unforgettable look at the birds and marine life that inhabit the salt marshes off Poquoson. In the evening, there are dozens of free outdoor military band concerts happening at several locations throughout our area. Hampton Roads is home to a number of first-rate military bands that play everything from jazz and pop to the classics. If history is your passion, Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center located at opposite ends of the greater Peninsula are focusing on Colonial-era tools this month. Their “Tools of the Trade” programs look at the primitive oyster shells Native-Americans used to more sophisticated iron and steel implements brought to this country by Europeans and Africans. There’ll be lots of activities for kids at these events. If you’ve never visited Bacon’s Castle, a 17th century brick manor house located in nearby Surry County, this is the year for a tour. The house is celebrating 350 years and offers a look at a prosperous planter of an earlier time. Runners of all ages are gearing up for the Superhero 5K and Fun Run sponsored by Child Development Resources. Dress as your favorite superhero and come out Aug. 2 to support an organization that provides crucial services to children with special needs. When the heat gets to you, duck into La Tienda, a fascinating Williamsburg retail store and bistro that imports gourmet products from Spain. Sample wines and tapas at their weekly tastings or stay for dinner and introduce the family to the popular Spanish rice dish called paella. Adult beverages — hundreds of domestic and foreign beers in fact — are for sale at the Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop, a unique business that has opened off Merchant’s Square. Friday night tastings here are a great way to sample some unusual brews. Visitors and townspeople, especially students, will want to know what’s new at the College of William and Mary this fall. We look at some of the new programs and buildings under construction. Finally, our features on Anne of Smithfield and DoveTail Antiques highlight two of the small businesses that add personality to our region. Whether you’re braving the August heat or looking for places to cool off, this issue offers plenty of choices.

Chesapeake Bay Adventures takes you to the salt marsh By David Nicholson
Racing across to the salt marsh, barely skimming the water’s surface, Jamie Moore’s Diamondback Airboat takes visitors to places few vehicles can reach. His Chesapeake Bay Adventures eco-tour company opens up a world of unusual wildlife and marine life that inhabit the marshland and surrounding waters of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Black skimmers, American oystercatchers, willets and other shorebirds sail overhead or trawl the water for food. Horseshoe crabs, oysters and puppy drum fish travel under the surface. “I grew up on the water and could pilot a boat before I could ride a bike,” said Moore. “The premise is to design your own adventure because everyone 20

is looking for something different.” Moore, 42, operates out of the York Haven Marina, which has been in his family for four generations. He and his brother Starkey, 31, take groups on one-hour tours of the Plum Tree Island Wildlife Refuge, where the Poquoson and Back rivers empty into the Chesapeake Bay. Known as the largest salt marsh on the Chesapeake Bay, the area is home to 250 species of migratory birds, intertidal beaches and nesting areas for turtles. The company also offers sunrise and sunset tours, picnic excursions, paddle boarding and kayaking adventures, and fishing charters. Starkey Moore, who likes catching drum and speckled trout, reports that “this is where all the good fishing is.”
Jamie Moore took his first airboat ride at Disney World several years ago and decided to set up a tour operation at home. He purchased the 600- horsepower airboat two years ago and is now the only licensed eco-tour operator in the state. “I want to get people out of their comfort zones and see things they’ve never seen before,” he said. “People who visit here want to get out on the water but don’t want to fight the traffic to get to Virginia Beach.” In addition to learning about the region’s ecosystem, Moore has studied up on local history. “Last year, I took out one English couple who wanted to know all about the siege of Yorktown,” he said. His business already is expanding. This year, he launched a second airboat operation in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. “You’ve got to love it,” he said. “It’s got to be in your blood. It’s definitely one of my passions.” Want to go? Chesapeake Bay Adventures York Haven Marina, 100 Mingee St., Poquoson 757-871-6402 or 757-868-4532 Cost: $50 per person for a one-hour tour. Use of tools explored in “Tools of the Trade” programs at Jamestown and Yorktown
By David Nicholson
From primitive oyster shells to more sophisticated steel and iron implements, tools played an important role in 17th- and 18th-century life in Jamestown and Yorktown. Their uses are highlighted in “Tools of the Trade,” a series of special programs throughout the month of August at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center. Native Americans used the resources they had, such as bones, stones and wood, to make axes and knives, according to Frank Hardister, supervisor of the Powhatan Village at the Jamestown historical center. 26
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2015
“‘Tools of the Trade’ shows the development of the style of canoe-building natives used,” said Hardister. “They charred the wood then scraped it using oyster shells and stone scrapers.” Iron and steel tools were introduced with the arrival of the Europeans and Africans. “When the Europeans arrived here, these tools became important trade items,” he said. Interpretive programs during this theme month will feature a range of 17th- and 18th-century tools and implements. Much of the activity will be centered around two events. “On the Riverfront,” Aug. 1-2, Jamestown Settlement. The weekend will feature objects used to
build dugout canoes and harvest the Chesapeake Bay waters. Kids can scrape out a Powhatan-style canoe with an oyster shell and learn about Chesapeake Bay life through crafts and games. “The first Africans arrived in 1619 and we talk about the took kits they brought,” said Hardister. “In the African gallery, you can see the axes and adzes used to cut down trees and till the soil.” On Saturday morning that weekend, demonstrators will be making iron in an early clay bloomery furnace. “The Virginia Living Museum will be there with a few critters, and the James River Association will talk about river preservation,” he said. “Tools of the American Revolution Seminar,” Aug. 15, Yorktown Victory Center. This one-day seminar features handson activities illustrating period tools and scholarly topics ranging from military engineering to land surveying.

College of William and Mary gears up for the fall By David Nicholson August may be a slow time for many of us, but faculty and administrators at the College of William and Mary are busy preparing for the arrival of students. Here’s a look at the new Class of 2019 and some of the programs and improvements they can expect. Information has been gathered from news stories written by W&M’s University Relations office and the college website. Class of 2019 The Office of Undergraduate Admission offered admission to just under 5,000 students this year. They were selected from a pool of nearly 15,000 students, setting a new application record for the 11th consecutive year. A total of 1,520 students are expected to arrive this month. Tim Wolfe, associate provost for enrollment and dean of admission, called the new crop an “exceptionally talented group of students.… Not only were we impressed by their academic and extra-curricular accomplishments, but also by what they will add to our community through their personal experiences and interests.” Here are a few additional facts: — 89 percent of those admitted were expected to graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class. — Median SAT score was 1410. — 32 percent were identified as students of color. — Seven percent are international students. Free mobile app W&M’s Swem Library has developed TribeTrek, a new campus walking tour that allows users to explore the people, places and events in the university’s history. The free mobile app can be downloaded for smart phones and tablets at the App Store or Google Play. TribeTrek offers a snapshot of campus buildings, sculptures and other sites through photographs from the library’s archives, writes Tami Black of the Swem Library. The 74 sites, with more to come, range from the Wren Building and Sunken Garden to Zable Stadium. “We tried to include a good mix of academic buildings, student life, athletics,” said Steven Bookman, university archives specialist and creator of TribeTrek, “It’s a fun way for people to see what the campus looked like in the past, but also to learn about William & Mary’s traditions and history.” 28

Online MBA program The Raymond A. Mason School of Business has created a new online Master of Business Administration program. Students will begin classes in the university’s first all-digital degree program on Aug. 24. The curriculum was designed by Mason School faculty members around the theme of “Renaissance Thinker, Revolutionary Leader.” The program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and will be administered through a partnership with higher education online services provider Everspring, Inc. Online MBA Director Pam Suzadail writes that the curriculum “goes beyond the typical quantitative skills learned in an MBA, adding specialized classes and projects that will teach students how to identify and solve complex business problems.” The 49-credit program is designed to be completed in two years, with students taking six courses lasting sevenand-a-half weeks each. The program requires students to have at least two years of prior work experience. There’s a required on-campus residency that gives students the opportunity to connect in-person with classmates and others in the university community. Additional information about the program is available online at onlinemba.mason.wm.edu or by calling 844396-6227.
Building projects Integrated Science Center Work on the third phase of W&M’s Integrated Science Center is underway. The four-story addition will connect two existing sections with an additional 113,000 square feet of space. It is being funded by $74.2 million in state money and is scheduled for completion in spring 2016, according to Anna Martin, the university’s vice president of administration. The center’s two existing buildings house offices and labs for the chemistry, psychology and much of the biology departments. The third phase will add applied science and computer facilities, a 300-seat lecture hall, and a rooftop greenhouse. Zable Stadium Renovations continue at Zable Stadium, the university’s 80-year-old football facility. The university has raised more than $22 million from private sources. The project was jump-started by an initial $10 million gift in 2012 from the estate of the late Walter J. Zable, a college athlete and American businessman who graduated in 1937. The renovation project is expected to cost a total of $27 million and be completed in time for the 2016 football season. Plans call for a new upper deck and press box, additional seats, and new restroom facilities, entrance and ticketing location.

Anne of Smithfield By Emily Carrigan, Daily Press Intern Anne Phillips opened her store, Anne of Smithfield, about four years ago when she realized the small shows she was hosting in her home were becoming a hit. She needed a larger space to sell her merchandise. After leaving the furniture business, Phillips began selling crystal dishes, flatware and other home furnishings to friends and neighbors out of her home. As the shows began to grow to also include clothes and jewelry, Phillips began thinking of her next step. “I said, ‘gosh, I’ve got a lot left over, and so I really need to do something with all this stuff’,” Phillips said of finding her store. “So I was looking for a place to rent and I found this.” Phillips has run the Main Street store as almost a onewoman show, she said, selling everything from jewelry, purses and hats to dresses, jackets, pants and more. “I call it casual, such as the Gretchen Scott tunics, and then I go up to the Joseph Ribkoff gowns or dresses or classic jackets, and then I have something in between,” Phillips said of her collection, which she purchases at apparel shows in Atlanta. Phillips prides her merchandise on being feminine and beautiful from all angles. “In most of my pieces…they’re not just beautiful in the front. When you see it in the back it’s also beautiful,” Phillips said, pointing to careful details such as buttons, bows or decorative zippers. For the past five years, Phillips has hosted a charity fashion show at the Smithfield Inn to benefit the American
Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen foundation. All of the models in the show are cancer survivors, Phillips said. “They came into my shop, and some of them had bandanas on, “ said Phillips. “And I started hearing these things they’re telling me about having breast cancer, and I said, ‘You can be a beautiful model.’” Phillips says this year’s show holds special meaning for her. Since she is battling breast cancer herself, she will be walking in the show for the first time. Phillips donates 10 percent of her sales for the day to the cancer societies and estimates that last year’s show raised about $800 for the charities. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Smithfield Inn. Want to go? What: Anne of Smithfield Where: 124 Main St., Smithfield Information: 757-357-4422 or on Facebook

Child Development Resources
Superhero 5K
at the Vineyards of Williamsburg By David Nicholson Runners of all ages are gearing up for the annual Child Development Resources Superhero 5K and Fun Run. This year’s event will take place Aug. 8 at The Vineyards of Williamsburg. Organizers are hoping to bring out as many as 800 runners and supporters for the race. Many participants, especially the little ones, enjoy dressing up as their favorite superhero. The Superhero 5K is one of two major fundraisers each year for CDR, a nonprofit organization that provides a myriad of services to infants and toddlers in Williamsburg and Poquoson and James City and York counties. “We work with families with children ages 0 to 3 who have special needs, developmental delays or are in poverty,” said Marsha Hargette, CDR’s director of development. “We offer services such as physical therapy or speech therapy in the home to help these children catch up to their peers.” This year’s course winds through the scenic Vineyards of Williamsburg subdivision. The races bring out 5K walkers and runners of all ages, fun runners, volunteers, and families. CDR’s goal for the race is to raise $85,000. This year a generous donor has offered to match the first $10,000 raised. The good work that CDR does can be found on the organization’s website in testimonials from parents like
Katie and Aaron Marceron. When their son, Adam, was born with special needs and developmental challenges, the couple turned to CDR for help. "CDR has become an extension of our family," writes Katie Marceron on the website. "When you have a child with special needs, you don't always know what to do. But we had a local organization that helped us, offered support, services, therapy and a shoulder to lean on." The Marceron family teamed up with friends to form a 5K team for the race. Team Adam became one of CDR’s top fundraising teams. “CDR is celebrating 50 years of serving infants and toddlers in the community,” said Hargette. “We really want to spread awareness out there.” Race packets can be picked up prior to race day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7 at Child Development Resources, 150 Point O'Woods Road, Williamsburg, Want to go? Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop offers hundreds of brews Food and wine festival coming up Aug. 2 By David Nicholson Tucked behind the DoG Street Pub on Merchants Square is a beer-lover’s paradise. The Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop, open earlier this year, stocks hundreds of domestic and foreign brews. The shop appeals both to the beer expert as well as someone who wants to learn more about a beverage that’s growing in popularity. New breweries are springing up every week across the country. “It’s a place where people can come and socialize and get to know the product,” said general manager Michael Claar. “Some know about beers, and for others, it’s new to them.” From 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays, Claar hosts free beer tastings that offer both education and camaraderie. “Some weeks we’ll do tastings from a specific brewery,” he said. “On other weeks, we’ll pick a style.” In the rear of the store, a tap room features eight different beers that change frequently. Customers can order flights of what’s on tap or take them home. Using stateof-the-art bottling equipment, the shop can pour the beer into growlers or cans and seal it for drinking later. “With this equipment, it will taste as if it’s right from the tap,” said Claar. Often folks who have dined at DoG Street Pub wander back to Hair of the Dog to sample some of the beers. Sipping and socializing takes place around tall pub-style tables. The shop also offers a limited menu of items prepared at the pub. The lineup includes cod bites, battered and fried, and reuben croquettes, which are panko-encrusted fried balls of corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. Hair of the DoG also carries unusual soft drinks, hot sauces, beer-making kits and supplies for cocktail enthusists such as flavored bitters and simple syrups.
Want to go? Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop Behind DoG Street Pub, Merchants Square, 401 W. Duke of Gloucester St., Williamsburg Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Tastings 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays. Information: 757-293-6478. Facebook.
Whistle Belly Beer Festival DoG Street Pub will join forces with The Junior Woman's Club of Williamsburg for the Whistle Belly food and drink festival from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 2. Location is the parking lot behind the pub. The event celebrates Virginia Craft Beer Month in August. Proceeds benefit the programs and projects of the Junior Woman's Club of Williamsburg. More than 30 breweries will be pouring 80 different beers. Early sign-ups include AleWerks, Alpine, Avery, Ballast Point, Blue Mountain, Bold Rock, Breckenridge, Champion, Devils Backbone, Duck Rabbit, Evolution, Foothills, Founders, Goose Island, Green Flash, Hardywood, Heavy Seas, Heritage, Legend, Lickinghole Creek, New Belgium, O'Connor, Old Bust Head, Port City, Smartmouth, St. George, Starr Hill, Stone and Wild Wolf. Food will be prepared by DoG Street Pub, the Trellis Bar & Grill and Blue Talon Bistro. Wine and Colonial-era cocktails also will be served. Cost is $50 for unlimited food and drink ($40 drink only and $20 food only). General admission for these ticket holders begins at 12:30 p.m. There’s also an early-access ticket price and ticketholders will be admitted at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are available online at dogstreetpub.com and at Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop. La Tienda serves the tastes of Spain in Williamsburg
By David Nicholson
La Tienda has built its reputation selling wines, gourmet food products and kitchen accessories imported from Spain. But not everyone knows that this Williamsburg retail store offers free wine tastings and serves meals in its adjacent La Barra bistro on the weekend. The festivities begin with a Spanish-style happy hour from 4 to 8 p.m. Fridays in La Barra. The menu includes beer, wine, sangria and tapas from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by tapas and paella from 6 to 8 p.m. Paella is a popular Spanish rice dish made with 42

saffron, vegetables, and chicken and sausage or seafood cooked and served in a large shallow pan. Tapas, or small plates, include items such as dates wrapped in bacon, eggplant sauteed in honey, or potato omelet. “Folks enjoy coming out for a glass of wine,” said owner Don Harris. “It’s fulfilling a need and seems to be popular with the young professionals in town.” The eating and drinking continues with a free wine tasting paired with different foods that takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, said Harris. La Barra also serves paella and tapas from noon to 9 p.m. that day. Families or groups of friends who want a fresh paella can call in their order ahead of time. Harris, an alumnus at the College of William and Mary, got his first taste of Spain in the mid1960s while serving in the U.S. Navy. He fell in love with the country and its people. After retiring as a Navy chaplain and moving to Williamsburg, Harris and his oldest son, Tim, began importing Spanish serrano ham through the Internet in 1996. They discovered a need for Spanish products, and their online and catalog business grew. In 2009, the company expanded its small showroom into the large retail space on Jamestown Road. “Today we sell more than 1,000 products, and virtually all of them come from small families,” said Harris. The inventory includes fancy Iberico hams, olive oils, sherries, Galician bread and Manchego cheeses. Harris and his family make frequent trips to Spain to visit the families that make the products they sell.
“My first attraction is to the Spanish people — their whole lives revolve around socializing and eating,” said Harris. “When you go into a restaurant there, no one is talking about politics. They’re all talking about food.”

DoveTail Antiques By Adrienne Mayfield
There’s no escaping time at Dovetail Antiques. The Williamsburg shop specializes in unique clocks and furniture with stories to tell. A large, wooden Pagoda-top clock, made in 1770, stands proudly in the same room as a small 1921 model Plymouth, presiding over a scenic landscape. Timepieces framed in circle and square shapes decorate the walls, and glass cases are filled neatly with shining pocket watches. Cuckoos sound happily together on the hour from a corner of the store. And then there’s the ticking. It’s noticeable. Pendulums swing on time from behind their glass casings. All of the clocks tell the right time, thanks to 12-hour wind-up Wednesdays, when owners Jeff and Sue Ade manually set more than 100 clocks. They also celebrate wind-up Sunday at home with their 50-clock collection. But the customers don’t seem to mind the noise. “The sound of clocks is comforting. It feels like home,” said Emma Wilson, 14. She and her family came to Williamsburg on vacation, and spent a halfhour browsing the store. The Ades say they love the ticking — the shop is too quiet without it. “We always tell people it’s the heartbeat of the store. I never feel alone when I’m here,” Sue said. The couple’s fascination with clocks began with Jeff, who is a collector and part-time mechanic at Williamsburg Clocks. 48
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2015
“They’re timeless,” Jeff said, adding that he looks for unique pieces that have stood the test of time. He buys clocks and watches from private sellers in the Hampton Roads and Richmond areas, as well as at live auctions. Sue said she began to appreciate clocks after she married Jeff 12 years ago. She loves them because they remind her of a time when quality was more important than quantity. “We have become a very disposable society,” Sue added. Clocks and watches made today are made to be thrown away. These will live on forever. You can rebuild a clock or watch, and if you take care of it, it will be (working) in your great, great grandchildren’s lifetime.” The store is also a treasure trove for antiques that aren’t time-related. There’s a shelf displaying apothecary bottles and old-fashioned ice-cream scoopers. A bejeweled cufflink from a dress worn long ago hangs in a frame. There’s a roll top desk with its original hardware and key, and a chest that was owned by a member of the 1851 House of Representatives. “You run into history,” Jeff said of antiquing. “I like history. If you like history, you run into things like clocks, watches, furniture … they all tell a story.” DoveTail Antiques specializes in wall clocks, pocket watches and original antiques. Bacon’s Castle celebrates 350th
By Mark St. John Erickson
When Surry County planter Arthur Allen started erecting his stately brick manor house between Lawnes and Chippokes creeks in 1660, you could count the number of permanent masonry dwellings in Virginia on two hands and still have a couple of fingers to spare. Most of the other structures sheltering the colony’s population of some 27,000 people were rudimentary wood-framed buildings anchored by posts buried in the ground, Colonial Williamsburg architectural historian Carl Lounsbury says, and even the prosperous lived in spaces barely larger or better than the rough-hewn cabins in which they quartered their African slaves -- if they had any slaves at all -- and their far more numerous white indentured servants. In this rarely changing landscape of so-called “Virginia houses,” even a relatively modest structure could prompt notice and compel respect by incorporating a brick foundation and brick chimneys, Lounsbury notes in the 2014 book “The Chesapeake House.” So it comes as no surprise that -- for some 150 years after Allen completed his landmark 21/2-story manor in 1665 -- it was known throughout Virginia as “Arthur Allen’s Brick House.” Still, no one then could have predicted that the distinctive Jacobean structure better known today as 52
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2015
“Bacon's Castle” would outlive all its contemporaries -and that 350 years later it would be marking a milestone birthday as the oldest surviving brick dwelling in North America. “When Arthur Allen started building this house, there was more money in Virginia than there had been before. The fashion for brick houses was just coming in -- and the stakes for someone with ambition were higher. So if you wanted to be a player, you made a conscious decision to build with brick and be noticed,” Lounsbury said. “This was the time when the colony’s elite were starting to create a permanent landscape -- and what makes this house so extraordinary is that all of the other brick houses they built at the same time are gone. This is the one that survived.” Brick landmark That rarefied status was far from certain in 1974, when the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities -- now Preservation Virginia -- acquired the historic but badly deteriorated structure from its last private owner. Altered and expanded numerous times over four different centuries, the 5,300-square-foot original house and its 4,000-square-foot 1854 addition had fallen into such disrepair that it took a decade to raise the money
and complete the work needed to preserve it -- then open its historic halls to the public, Preservation Virginia Director of Museum Operations Jennifer Hurst-Wender says. “It would have crumbled without Preservation Virginia,” she said. “But like all of our other sites -- including Historic Jamestowne -it tells a story that can’t be told any place else.” First among those stories is the tale of Allen’s ambition, which took a landscape not far removed from the Virginia frontier and transformed it with a structure that was as fashionable and up-to-date as some of the best houses being erected at the same time in his home county in southeast England, Lounsbury said. In addition to making a mark through the pioneering use of brick, its builders embraced their work in a deliberately exuberant and expressive manner, giving Allen an eyecontinued on page 58

catching country seat that boasted two sets of triple, diamond-turned chimney stacks and curvilinear Flemish parapet walls at the gable ends. They also applied stuccoed exterior frames to the second-floor windows -- helping define them against the decorative pattern of the Flemish bond walls -- then covered the steep roof with thousands of sandstone shingles that combined to make a nearly singular architectural, social and economic statement. “He could have used wooden shingles like everybody else,” Lounsbury says, describing the conspicuous cost of importing the heavy stone slabs from England. “But he didn’t.” Rebel stronghold Just five years after completing his landmark house, Allen died. But by that time the wealthy merchant, planter and county jurist had not only accumulated some
2,000 acres of land but also paved the way for his son, Arthur Allen II, to become even richer and more influential. A strong supporter of Gov. William Berkeley, the younger Allen would go on to serve in the House of Burgesses and be elected Speaker. He also continued his father’s fondness for making ambitious architectural statements designed to underscore his status and impress his neighbors. “At a time when most other people in Virginia were struggling just to stay alive, he was spending his money on building a pleasure garden,” Hurst-Wender says. “It’s still very early in the development of the colony -- and he was really almost out in the wilderness here. But what he created was the oldest English formal garden in North America.” Years before he thought of devoting the 1.5-acre tract to contemplation rather than cropland, however, the surveyor and captain

of militia became the target of a revolt that preceded the American Revolution by 100 years. Though Allen himself was then away rallying support for the embattled governor -- who had been driven from the capital at Jamestown -- his house was seized by about 70 followers of rebel leader Nathaniel Bacon on Sept. 18, 1676, and held until loyalist forces regained control more than three months later. Today, that short but prophetic insurrection is commemorated at the site by an early 20th-century stained-glass portrait that once hung in Williamsburg’s 1715 Powder Magazine. “This is the icon of the way the early APVA wanted Bacon to be -- a gentleman on one side and a rebel on the other,” Hurst-Wender says, describing the patriotic but imagined depiction. “But let’s make one thing clear about Bacon’s Castle: He never owned this house. He was never here during the rebellion. It’s just what people started calling it in the early 1800s.” Years of change By the time of Allen’s death in 1710, the big brick house in Lawnes Creek Parish was still a rarity in Virginia. But combined with the influential design of the newly occupied Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg and an early 1700s building boom funded by the return of tobacco profits, the passage of nearly 50 years since its completion had made the home’s Jacobean plan and lines increasingly outmoded. Among the many changes that the house's longest continuous resident made to update the dwelling in the early 1700s was the reconfiguration of the first floor’s old-fashioned hall and chamber plan into a more contemporary space featuring two rooms flanking a center passage. Elizabeth Bray Allen also replaced the antiquated diamond-pane casement windows with then-inno-
vative sash -- and even went as far as moving the window openings themselves in order to give the house a more balanced and symmetrical Georgian appearance. Raised wooden paneling transformed the first floor’s public rooms, too, along with such other improvements as a new rear porch staircase and hidden manteltrees, Lounsbury says. “Life didn’t stop in 1665 after they completed this building,” he adds. “Everybody updates their property, and the owners were continually renewing the house and the surrounding buildings.” Among the many changes preserved at the 40-acre site is an early18th-century 11/2-story addition that was later moved and replaced by a classical revival addition. Ten other outbuildings stand outside the house today, ranging in date from an uncommon circa 1750 smokehouse, a scarce 1829 slave quarters and a rare 1850s smokehouse to more typical but still instructive 20th-century farm buildings. “It’s the 17th century that makes this property so significant historically,” site manager Joanna Braswell says, describing the site’s change and development over time. “But it’s all the other things here that give us 350 years worth of stories to tell.” That rich and varied architectural collection is one reason why a new $350,000 fund-raising campaign marking the house’s 350th year targets the preservation of the most significant and endangered outbuildings in addition to a new roof, extensive brick repointing and fire suppression upgrade for the manor. Earlier this year, the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation and the state awarded a nearly $260,000 grant to permanently protect some 1,260 acres of private farmland bordering the site from residential and commercial development.
“When Allen came here in the mid-1600s, he was farming in the wilderness -- and we’re extraordinarily lucky that we have practically the same viewshed today,” HurstWender says, describing the surrounding expanses of woods and fields. “What you’re seeing when you look down that lane is basically the same landscape he would have seen 350 years ago.”
