Charter company sets sail The latest entry to the myriad amenities of Williamsburg tourism is a skippered sailboat out of Gloucester Point and Yorktown. Bill O’Donovan, the former publisher of the Virginia Gazette, set out to convert his 32-foot sloop into a charter sailboat. His market is local people and timeshare resort guests. “Many people who live here are too busy to get out on the water, and I seek to remedy that with on-the-water sailing lessons and sailing for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries,” he said. “It makes a unique gift.” His company logo, “Let’s Go Sail,” is a call to action in which the crew actually gets to run the boat. The target audience is couples and groups of up to six people. His Hunter 321 easily accommodates three couples. The sails are 2.5-4 hours, and Certified U.S. Coast Guard life

jackets are provided. There is a working restroom on board as well as hot and cold water. The website williamsburgchartersails.com lists nine charters, including one on local history and one on the military bases. The sails can work for class or family reunions, wedding parties or burials at sea. Other charters are aimed at people looking to buy a sailboat, buying waterfront property, and an appreciation cruise for managers interested in team-building. O’Donovan pointed to a master plan by David Neiburh of the Watermen’s Museum that calls for deploying recreated 18th century ships on the waterfont. “David envisions these as educational and hands-on tools for children and adults, a sort of Mystic Seaport of the South. The more we get people out here on the water, the more they appreciate it.”

Neiburh’s master plan would transition Yorktown from an obligatory drive-by ordeal to a genuine attraction that gets people down on the water to embrace the colonial seaport. Over at Gloucester Point, where O’Donovan’s sailboat is based, “The Bacote family has been promoting boating for 35 years as they grew York River Yacht Haven into the finest marina in Virginia. People are always surprised what a great place it is, and so big.” He believes his charter is the only skippered sloop for charter in Hampton Roads. Back on the Peninsula, “York County has 202 miles of waterfront and James City 152 miles,” O’Donovan said. “Let’s go sail.” Want to go? Visit williamsburgchartersails.com.

I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor

“Our food is unique, it is a little different than the Mexican food people may be used to,” Ibarra said. “And our drinks are also unique. I also think that the customers like our staff and our service.” Ibarra said the restaurant welcomes regular customers daily. “It is nice when you see a few people here and there that come in often,” he said. “It seems that when people come in multiple times they are happy with the food, drinks and service.” El Tapatio is flanked by other successful businesses including Buffalo Wild Wings, Regal New Town Cinemas and Sweet Frog. The location is one Ibarre touts as contributing to the restaurant’s success. “It’s an extremely nice location,” he said. “We get a lot of people that come in before their movies, and we even get people coming in after movies. It’s overall a really nice area.” For Ibarra, the success is exciting to see. “I have been manager here since we opened, and like any restaurant we have had our ups and our downs, but so far, so good. We really love the area and hope to stay here as long as possible,” he said. “The customers are always nice, so we really don’t want to leave.” Tanner Sheldon is an intern for the Virginia Gazette. -Tanner Sheldon

If the outdoor temperature is 100-degrees and their body temperature is one hundred degrees, effective cooling can’t occur, he noted. Sprenkel noted that cats are not as susceptible to heat-related illness. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals offers pet owners with some tips to keep in mind through the remainder of the hot summer. Keep pets indoors--Keeping them in air conditioning is the best way for them to be safe. Know the warning signs-Symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or collapse. Other symptoms can include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting with an elevated body temperature of more than 104 degrees. Animals with flat faces, like pugs are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with elderly or overweight dogs and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible. Rinse well-- Dogs who swim in pools or rivers should be rinsed to get off dangerous chemicals. Water only-- Don’t give sports drinks or electrolyte supplements to pets. Cool them down-- If a pet becomes overheated, run cool water over them. Call a veterinarian.

The Shoe Attic

August and September can present some of the hottest temperatures of summer in greater Williamsburg. Summer heat can affect pets, especially dogs, who can become overheated without owners realizing. “Sometimes dogs get excited when they are left outside,” said Dr. Dale Sprenkel of Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital in Norge. “They can get worked up, bark a lot, get anxious and overheat.” In his three decades of experience as a vet, Sprenkel has seen at least a dozen dogs lose their lives as a result of heat exhaustion. Sometimes animals are jeopardized by being left in cars, or sometimes they overheat due to over exercise or excitement. “I had a dog whose owner would hit golf balls and the dog would retrieve it,” he said. “Some dogs will do it until they drop.” Sprenkel added that once a dog becomes overheated, they are subsequently more prone to it. While overactivity frequently causes overheating, it is not the primary culprit. “The car is probably the worst enemy,” he said. “The greenhouse effect happens in a car. People may go into a store when it is cloudy outside. Then the sun may come out and it can get blazing hot. It could be seventy-five degrees when you leave, but if the sun comes out, things change quickly and it can be well over a hundred degrees.” Humans have the ability to sweat to cool down. Dogs don’t.

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE!

August See & Do • High Life Below Stairs – Guests peek into life “below stairs” at Shields Tavern during a lively three-course dinner served after the master and mistress of the house have retired for the night. The evening includes dishes that delighted Virginia residents during the Revolutionary era, such as tender beef simmered in ale-laced sauce followed by Granny Smith apple pie with hints of cinnamon and caramel under a butter crumb topping. Fun for the entire family Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Adults $49.95, Children $23.95, including tax and gratuity. Reservations 757-229-2141. • Tavern Ghost Walk – 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. and 9 to 10 p.m. Tours depart from Shields Tavern nightly. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 12. This family-friendly tour is suitable for all ages and can accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. It’s a spirited, interactive peek at the 21st-century folklore of the Revolutionary City. • New interactive Revolutionary City programs create a day-long experience as they play throughout the restored capital city. Begin the day with “Storming the Palace” at 10 a.m. on Palace Green. • Summer guests enjoy the newest episode in the popular alternate reality game series, RevQuest: Save the Revolution! Based on actual events and real people, RevQuest: The Black Chambers challenges players as never before to break codes and avoid detection as they find their way through The Revolutionary City to save the cause of American liberty. • The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg – Two new exhibitions: “Painters and Paintings of the Early American South” exposes previously unexplored regional connections between painters and their subjects in the 18th century. “Threads of Feelings” makes its final and only U.S. ap-

pearance in the Art museums of Colonial Williamsburg. On loan from The Foundling Museum of London, the exhibition includes 59 books of fabric tokens — each a scrap of material reflecting the life of an infant child given up to the Foundling Hospital during the mid-18th century. • The Taste Tradition – August 31- Sept. 1. Colonial Williamsburg presents its inaugural food and spirits festival with special dining and tasting experiences throughout Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. From Mimosas with the chef in the morning to champagne and oysters in the afternoon to bourbon and a cigar after dinner, more than 20 special events are sure to please the palate. Call 757-229-2141 for details and reservations. Guests must be 21 to attend Taste Tradition events. • Plan a special summer adventure at Historic Jamestowne. Catch an archaeology walking tour daily at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. and learn about the exciting discoveries this season. Accept a mission to find a Spanish spy at James Fort, playing “Eye the Spy,” the newest Jamestown Adventure game. Offered daily from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. through Sept. 2, the young and young at heart receive a special reward for completing the mission and saving the colony. Join the ranks as one of Captain Brewster’s Kids on a special kid-friendly tour every Thursday, July 11- Aug. 15, at 11:30 a.m. On this tour, meet an archaeologist and see how they have uncovered the past and come face to face with colonist Captain Brewster who will put you through your paces as you muster and prepare for a Spanish or Indian attack. All activities are free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne. Explorers 15 and under are free. For more information, call 757-2294997 or visit www.historicjamestowne.org. Perk up your closet at The Wardrobe Women may be hesitant about purchasing a $300 sweater. But what if you could purchase the same sweater in great condition for half the price?

Since 2001, Cassandra Johnson and her staff at The Wardrobe, located in the Village Shops at Kingsmill, has been providing fine consignment items for women. The Wardrobe can help whether you are looking for jewelry or a dress to wear to a special occasion. “Our price points are lower but our quality is still excellent,” Johnson said recently. “We also can provide a much larger variety than if you were to go into other retail stores.” Consignors are always welcome, providing a place where women can bring clothing and receive 50% of the selling price in return.

“Since 2001 we have put more than one million dollars back to the women of our community,” she said. “This is clothing that would either be donated or still hanging in closets, we were able to help many women put money back in their pockets.” The store, now in its 12th year has gained a solid reputation for locals and visitors. It is Johnson’s flair for fashion and her desire to help women dress their best that have combined for the success. “We also provide good customer service,” she said. “We are honest with people about what their merchandise is worth, and we truly enjoy the relationships with the women we attract. We aren’t the type of store that does business and sends you out the door, we like the relationships we make with our clients.” Tanner Sheldon is an intern for the Virginia Gazette. -Tanner Sheldon

When Jim Thompson attended an auction when the Patriot Inn on Richmond Road closed, he was able to pick the wall decorations up for a reasonable price. The Thompsons decided to transform a storage room into the unique space, using the 8-by-9 ft. pieces. They fit perfectly. “We got them last February,” Jim Thompson said recently. “Then Connie’s brother Edwin came and we framed the whole wall.” The pieces were adhered to the wall using two-inch Velcro. The murals, although large, are lightweight. “We can pull them down if we want,” he said. But that’s not likely.
