Heather Bridges

hbridges@vagazette.com

The so-called lazy days of summer have flown by; the season nears its end. Well, almost. You still have the whole month of August to make the most of summer’s staples. What better time to eat seafood than summer? This month, we’ve got some delicious food finds, including blue crabs, for those looking to grab a bite of seafood. For a completely different dinner experience, check out the Mystery Dinner Theater of Williamsburg at Fort Magruder Hotel, serving up a multi-course meal with an interactive mystery tale. There’s always plenty to do outdoors. This month, bring your own kayak to New Quarter Park for a guided tour of Queens Creek or, if you’d rather stick to dry land, then check out the Butterfly Festival at Williamsburg Botanical Garden. For the times it gets too hot, Williamsburg Magazine suggests some ways to find shade. A solid option for kids, though, is always The Zone, a multifaceted indoor recreation area at Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex, including a 1,400-square-foot playground. Although this issue features a lot of ways to savor summer, for those who like to look ahead, we preview what’s happening on the College of William and Mary campus. And, in looking ahead to other things, you’ll find in this issue some tips for planning a move – whether you’re looking to move to Williamsburg, or if you already live here, and you’re planning a move that requires downsizing.

Running for a good cause By Savannah Williams It’s not every day that something healthy for you has the added benefits of bring fun and helping others, but on Aug. 13, Child Development Resources invites the Peninsula to become real-life heroes by participating in their Superhero 5K. Proceeds from this family-friendly “fun run/walk” through the scenic Vineyards of Williamsburg Clubhouse at 2659 Jockeys Neck Trail, benefit programs for children whose parents are in school or job training, who have special or developmental needs, or who are born into high-risk situations. CDR is celebrating its 50th year serving the area by inviting racers to take the “$50 for the 50th Challenge,” in which participants commit to raise $50 each to help the organization meet their $50,000 goal. Betsy Edwards, the Special Events Coordinator for CDR, said “last year we were just under $50 thousand, and since this year is our 50th anniversary, we really liked that number.” The registration fee is $30 per person through July 15, $35 per person July 16-August 12, and $40 on the day of the race. Women mountain bikers take to the dirt By Savannah Williams For ladies who are looking to swap out their summer dresses for some sweat, mud, and adrenaline, the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s “Dirt Divas” program could be just the ticket. On Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., women athletes are invited to come be a part of a group of dedicated mountain bikers at Freedom Park for a morning of scenic trails and satisfying exercise. The Dirt Divas program was started two years ago, and contin-

ues on the first Saturday of every month. The distance of the ride changes according to the level of ability of the participants each week. This event is free and open to the public. Alister Perkinson, the coordinator of Freedom Park, said there are usually between 5 and 20 participants who come to the event. Freedom Park has more than 20 miles of mountain biking trails, which run through historical sites and forests, and follow along beside creeks. There are beginner programs available for potential

mountain bikers, but Dirt Divas is for women who are familiar with the rigor of the sport. Freedom Park is located at 5537 Centerville Road, Williamsburg. For more information about Dirt Divas, visit the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s website, www.evma.org. Learn more about Freedom Park by calling (757) 259-4022 or visiting www.jamescitycountyva.gov. Information about the current state of the trails is accessible by phone.

Five

unconventional ways to find shade By Heather Bridges The sun shines bright, the sky is clear blue. It’s the perfect summer day, and you’re itching to spend it outside. You step outdoors, but the sun turns out to be a little too bright for comfort. You could duck under an umbrella. You could stay inside. Or, you could seek shade in a way you hadn’t considered before.

1. Take a flight In a plane, though closer to the sun in terms of altitude, you’ll find shade within the cockpit. Williamsburg Flight Center, a locally owned business, offers a selection of air tours. Up to three people can hop in a File photo Cessna aircraft with an experienced pilot from the center. The Historic Triangle Tour flies over Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown – you might be familiar with the area’s history from the ground, but from the air, it’s an entirely new experience. The Plantations Air Tour, an hour-long flight, includes views of Berkeley Plantation, Sherwood Forrest Plantation, Bacon’s Castle, Brandon Plantation, Chippokes Plantation State Park and Claremont Manor. There’s also a personalized air tour option, for views of anything within 25 miles of the airport. To book a tour or for more information, call 2231488 or 206-2995 and visit williamsburgflightcenter. com. The Flight Center is located at WilliamsburgJamestown Airport, 104 Marclay Road. 14

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2016

After your flight, Charly’s Airport Restaurant is a short walk away. While dining, you can watch planes take off and land on the runway.

2. Zip through the trees Trees always offer shade. At Go Ape, you’ll find shade while skimming beneath tree tops. The treetop adventure course includes 2,099 feet of zip line, the longest single line at 600 feet and the highest point at 40 feet, as well as rope ladders, Tarzan swings and other obstacles to tackle. There’s even a junior adventure File photo course customized for younger patrons. You can book an adventure at Go Ape online at goape. Photo courtesy of Go Ape Treetop Adventure com or by calling 800-971-8271. The course is located within Freedom Park at 5537 Centerville Road. The park also houses Williamsburg Botanical Garden, with plenty of picturesque spots for shade.

3. Cruise with pirates Billowing sails offer some shade on the Yorktown Pirate Boat Tour. Hop aboard a traditional gaff-rigged schooner and join a crew of pirates – well, a crew dressed as pirates. Young participants can help raise the sails and steer the ship, and the crew will demonstrate firing the cannon. The cruise departs daily at 11 a.m., returning by 12:45 p.m. Cruises occur Monday-Saturday through Sept. 5, sailing only on Saturdays in September. The schooner departs from Riverwalk Landing Pier at the corner of Water and Ballard Streets. For more information, visit sailyorktown.com or call 639-

outdoor fun

1233. Tickets are available on the website or by calling 888-316-6422.

4. Solve the escape room game If it’s just too hot outside, you can still find shade through unexpected indoor options – including Room Escape Williamsburg, which opened this year. At Room Escape, teams work together to beat the clock, solving puzzles and thinking logically to complete the mission at hand: Escape the Aztec Temple, The Bank Heist or Contagion. In The Bank Heist, for example, you have 60 minutes to figure out how to unlock a bank vault, and the clues are hidden around the room. Don’t worry, there’s nothing scary or physically taxing about the mission, though children 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to book a slot, visit roomescapewilliamsburg.com or call 229-1215. Room Escape Williamsburg is located at 1215 Mount Vernon Avenue.

5. Browse books underground It’s easy to find shade when you’re underground. Mermaid Books, a longstanding basement bookstore, is a locally owned treasure, with plenty of treasures for sale. The store carries many rare and antique books in a range of genres, including poetry, history, art, mystery, fiction and children’s books. The store stocks used and new books, as well as vintage postcards and other small gifts. At 421-A Prince George St., the shop is File photo located near Merchants Square and Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area. Mermaid Books is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 12:30-5 p.m., Sunday. For more information, visit mermaidbookswilliamsburg.com or call 229-3603.

Summer sky offers a dazzling show stock photo

By Savannah Williams York River State Park invites outdoors lovers to take a trip up to the cliffs above the York River, and look up into the night sky for a beautiful view of the stars. Less than a week before the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower, Aug. 6 -- from 7:30 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. -- is the perfect time for beginners to get outside and become acquainted with the night sky. “York River State Park is a great place for stargazing, because we have very low light pollution,” says Carl Smith, a park employee who helped prepare for the event last year. “It’s also nice because it’s right beside the water.” The Virginia Peninsula

Astronomy Stargazers club will participate in this event, and will bring equipment which guests are welcome to use. Smith said “They have a whole lot of different telescopes, and they set them up, pointing them to things they think are cool, so people can walk around and get good views of planets and galaxies.” Beginners may also consider downloading any number of free constellation-illuminating smart phone or tablet apps before heading out to the event. York River State Park is located at 9801 York River Park Rd., Williamsburg, and there will be a parking fee of $3. For more information, visit www.dcr. virginia.gov/state-parks, or call (757) 566-3036.

Butterflies take flight during annual festival By Savannah Williams

Virginia is home to many different plants and animals – but perhaps none more beautiful than you can find at the Williamsburg Botanical Garden on Aug. 6 and 7, during its annual Butterfly Festival. Guests are invited to come hold, feed, and admire hundreds of Virginia butterflies between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day, or to come be a part of their butterfly release after the event. This year, the Butterfly Festival is expanding to offer a second butterfly tent. They are expecting to have about 500 butterflies, from a mix of six different native species. Virginia Master Naturalists will be posted inside the tents, educating people about the different species of butterflies and their many qualities. There will be butterflythemed stories, crafts, and educa-

tional sessions for children, including a limited number of chrysalises available for children to bring home and hatch for themselves. Adults are invited to take a tour through the garden, and to learn from the Master Gardeners about the different plants that will be sure to attract butterflies to your own back yard. Karen Jamison, Chairman of the garden’s board, expressed enthusiasm about the involvement of the Virginia Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners, saying “they are experts.” The Williamsburg Botanical Garden is located inside Freedom Park at 5537 Centerville Rd., Williamsburg, and admission to the Butterfly Festival is free, although donations are appreciated. For more information about the Butterfly Festival, visit www.williamsburgbotanicalgarden.org, or email webmaster@williamsburgbotanicalgarden.org.

Easy summer fun on the water By Savannah Williams Looking to spend some time on the water this summer? New Quarter Park has good news. On Aug. 20, the Chesapeake Experience continues its summer “Bring Your Own Kayak” boating series. Between 9 a.m. and noon, New Quarter Park invites you to take a leisurely trip down Queens Creek. If you bring your own gear, the event is free, but guests can also rent boats, paddles and life jackets from the Chesapeake Experience for $30. Guides from the Chesapeake Experience will be leading the trip, and will be on hand to teach paddlers about the marshes and animals they see, and to make sure people stay together. 16

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2016

Adrienne Richardson, the managing director of Chesapeake Experience, said “the goal is to share our knowledge about the Chesapeake Bay, enjoy the environment with other people, and get people out on the water. We want as many people out on the water as possible. It’s a community of people who enjoy nature.” She also said BYOK is the perfect opportunity for beginners, because “If you need some support, we’re there to help. It’s easy – anyone can do it.” New Quarter Park is located at 1000 Lakeshead Drive, Williamsburg. Equipment reservations for this trip must be made 24 hours in advance. For more information, visit www.chesapeakeexperience.org, or call (757) 259-6859.

I knew that advertising my new small business in the Williamsburg Magazine would be a wise decision. I was right! The response has been so positive and encouraging. The magazine ad definitely got the word out that there is a new consignment store in town and the map included in the magazine led customers and consigners right to my door. Working with Kathy and LouAnne has been a great experience. Their design ideas and work ethic resulted in the exact ad that I had in mind. I have always been a fan of the Magazine and found it to be a wonderful resource. It is also a great supporter of the small business owner and I am proud to advertise with them.

things to do

Jamestown commemorates America’s early years By Steve Vaughan At Jamestown Settlement, which recreates the Jamestown fort, the three ships the first colonist used to sail to Virginia and a Powhatan Indian village are part of a special program on trade that will be in place all summer. “Bartering for a Continent: How Anglo-Indian Trade Shaped America,” will explore the importance of trade between American Indians and English colonists, from the founding of Jamestown through the American Revolution, and Virginia’s role in the development of a new world of exchange in goods and commodities in North America. The exhibit, which runs through Dec. 10, features artifacts from private and public collections, including a series of 17th- and 18th-century firearms typical of those used in the fur trade from 1650-1800, peace medals used in diplomatic relations, and English trade beads, tools and household items used to buy animal pelts.

Opportunities to interact with the exhibit encourage participation in the trading adventure. Visitors will be able to: load a canoe with trade goods, then climb in and imagine paddling up a river; learn words of the Powhatan language; compare types of traded goods and their value; and make and take home an impression of a peace medal. Afterward, visitors can test their bartering skills outdoors in the re-created Powhatan Indian village and English fort.

WANT TO GO? Admission to Jamestown Settlement, a museum of 17th-century Virginia, is $17 for adults and $8 for those ages 6-12. Those under 6 are admitted free. Open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. through Aug. 15; after that closing time is 5 p.m. For more information, call (888) 593-4682 toll-free or (757) 253-4838.

Make Room for the Memories. An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. The history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger! Save 20% with a combination ticket to both museums.

food & drink

Blue crabs are a summer delight By Brandy Centolanza Whether you prefer them broiled, steamed, fried, or grilled, be sure to include blue crabs as part of your summer dining experience. Blue crab season typically runs March through December, though they are best enjoyed outside during the warmer months. “A lot of people like to sit outside and eat them on the porch,” said Jess Carino, owner of Carino’s Seafood Market on Ironbound Road. “We steam them here and people like to pick at the crabmeat, or have them as crab cakes or devilled crabs. You can also dip them in a batter and fry them.” Blue crabs are popular mostly on the East Coast, while Dungeness crabs are big out West. “Blue crab is a sweeter, more delicate meat [than other crabs],” shares Chef Jonathan Brown, sous chef

for Waypoint Seafood and Grill. “For me, nothing beats a steamed crab with a bit of J.O Seasoning, cider vinegar or butter and some ice cold beer. “However, crab cakes, crab bisque, and warm crab dip are some of my favorites as well. I like Old Bay seasoning in cooked preparations and J.O. Seasoning for steamed.” 6 Crabs Seafood Market on Second Street sees an increase in seafood purchases during the summer months, particularly blue crabs and soft-shelled crabs. The market makes fresh homemade crab cakes as well as its own tartar and cocktail sauces. “People like to order them ahead from out of state for their family get-togethers and holidays like the Fourth of July,” shares Jackie Shim, president of 6 Crabs. Hush puppies and corn on the cob are common side dishes for blue crabs. In addition to blue crabs, 6

Crabs also sells a lot of calamari, oysters, scallops, shrimp, whiting, catfish, tilapia, and flounder. “Virginia is diverse, and has some great options for local seafood and great stuff right off the coast,” points out Brown. Crabs vary in price depending on the season, the sex and size of the crab as well as the quantity you purchase, normally by the dozen, half bushel or full bushel. Prices range from $100-125 per bushel for No.1 Jimmies (large males), but that fluctuates depending on who you know and how scarce the season is. Brown advises buying seafood from a reputable source. “Use your senses,” he says. “Does it look fresh? Smell fresh? Is it kept on ice? Fish should be firm with a bit of spring and clear eyes if buying whole. If you push on the flesh and the indentation stays and pools with moisture, it’s probably been frozen. Gills should be rosy red not dark. Frozen seafood such as shrimp should be free of large crystals of ice which is a sign it’s been thawed and refrozen.” No matter how you take your crabs, the key is to have fun with the experience. “It’s better to sit outside with them, make a mess, and enjoy the weather,” Shim says.

things to do

A toe-tapping accompaniment to history By Savannah Williams Williamsburg is a nexus for Colonial history, but for history buffs who crave a diversion – and for musical enthusiasts of any kind – the Virginia Musical Museum is the perfect destination. Virginia has a rich musical history, with natives Patsy Cline, Wayne Newton, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bruce Hornsby leading the list of notables. As one of the earliest territories, Virginia has witnessed a comprehensive evolution of American music. The Virginia Musical Museum honors this growth by offering displays on some of the most prominent musicians born in the area, and a wide array of historical musical instruments and devices. “In everything we do, we try to show Virginia

history,” says Buddy Parker, owner of the museum. “Virginia has had an impact on music everywhere in the world.” The museum is home to one of only two known existing Joseph Shudi Harpsichords from 1790. It also has one of the first Edison recording devices, Wayne Newton’s car, and a selection of music boxes, organs, phonographs, and nickelodeons. The Virginia Musical Museum is at 6316 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturdays, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, and $8 for students and senior citizens. Children under age 5 are admitted free of charge. For more information, call (757) 303-5907 or visit www.virginiamusicalmuseum.com.

shopping

From T-shirts to Christmas ornaments, we have souvenirs to suit every style By Brandy Centolanza When it comes to choosing the perfect souvenir to commemorate your time in Williamsburg, local shops have you covered, whether it is something traditional like a coffee mug or T-shirt, or something more unique like blown glass or a colonial bird house. The Williamsburg General Store on Richmond Road sells popular souvenir trinkets such as mugs, shot glasses, magnets and key chains, but they also have puzzles, kitchen items like utensils and salt and pepper shakers, and other gifts. New designs come out seasonally to keep things fresh. “We also sell Williamsburg souvenirs that are

made by local artists,” says Sam Wallace, general manager of The Williamsburg General Store. “For example, we sell blown glass, giclee prints, and wooden spoons that are made in Williamsburg. We carry a lot of product that is unique to us or different than you will find anywhere else in Williamsburg.” Lightfoot Manor Shoppe at Patriot Plaza carries jewelry, pewter and brass products, scarves, shirts and sweaters, stuffed animals, and other collectibles. You can buy souvenirs to remember your visit to Busch Gardens or Water Country USA at any of their stores. “We have authentic German steins and cuckoo clocks, Connemara Marble jewelry from Ireland, and hand-crafted Capodimonte porcelain flowers, which

are then hand-painted on site by our Italian Artisan,” shares Phil Barbie, director of merchandise for Busch Gardens. You can also pick up Williamsburg souvenirs and College of William & Mary, memorabilia at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Duke of Gloucester Street. And there is always something to be had at Colonial Williamsburg.

“Colonial Williamsburg has 20 stores and a website in which we sell over 15,000 items,” says Melissa Fraley-Agguini, Colonial Williamsburg executive director of products, retail and licensing. “Our most popular product categories are apparel, toys and games, books, food and beverages, and Christmas ornaments.” This year, the bird houses--the popular bird bottle in a terra cotta color seen often throughout Colonial Williamsburg---will be available in new colors. Meanwhile, “Rooted in Williamsburg” is a new collection of desk accessories that allows visitors to take an actual piece of Williamsburg home with them.

“The pens, letter openers, and other items are made from the wood from the Historic Area’s felled trees,” says Fraley-Agguini. Guests to the Historic Area tend to want souvenirs of The Governor’s Palace, the Fife & Drum corps, the horse carriage rides, the animals, and the taverns. Fraley-Agguini suggests thinking about what you did during your visit or what you were most fond of and cater your souvenir purchase around that. “We consider our souvenirs to be mementos or keepsakes that are reminders of the memories created here at Colonial Williamsburg,” she says. “We have so many unique and interesting experiences that our visitors come away with. As such, folks should look for items that speak personally to them and remind them of the aspect of their visit that was most interesting or meaningful.”

Ross said the event usually attracts “at least 500 families, over 1,000 people,” and is “a great opportunity for people to come see what WISC is all about.” In addition to participating in activities for the children, parents can peruse local vendors’ stands. This is a great opportunity for families to learn more about the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Com-

Downsizing do’s and don’ts By Heather Bridges The moving process, though inevitable, never gets easier. “Moving is one of the most difficult things any family ever does,” said Phillip Sweat, owner of Caring Transitions, a business offering relocation services around the Peninsula. And when moving includes downsizing, having to comb through a lifetime of possessions, the process becomes even more difficult. Be realistic Kinsman tells people to think realistically about what will fit, and what won’t fit. It goes without saying, but sometimes it needs to be said. Still, substitution is an option. If there’s no space for grandmother’s china set, but you don’t want to let go, then use it. “If you really want to keep your china, then use your china – even though it’s not normally an everyday item,” Kinsman said. “If it makes them happy in their new space, then take that instead of the everyday.”

Make a photo album Both Kinsman and Sweat advised taking photos of items a way of preserving items, without keeping them. “The stuff you really love, that you want to hold, take that with you,” Sweat said. “All the other stuff is just clutter.”

Here’s how to work on

who you know

By Brandy Centolanza New to the area and looking for a way to promote and grow your name or business? Why not give networking a try? Williamsburg has several networking groups for business owners seeking to connect with one another for assistance and advice. “If you have a new business, [networking] is a great way to introduce that business to the community, and if the business is established, networking groups could take that business to the next level,” says Carleen Peterson, president of Williamsburg Business Alliance, an organization that helps small businesses grow through networking. All businesses are welcome. WBA meets monthly throughout Williamsburg to provide business owners an opportunity to meet and greet each other. When attending an event, Peterson suggests dressing to represent your business. “Come early to take advantage of the time al-

lowed at the event, and meet as many people as you can,” Peterson says. “Do not just sit in a corner. Meet people and enjoy the food, drinks, and the people.” The Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Tourism & Alliance also has several networking opportunities. There is Business After Hours, a social event where you can develop business contacts; Morning Blend, morning sessions where you can introduce your business to everyone in the room; and other networking groups and volunteer committees that give business owners a chance to share ideas, make contacts, receive referrals, and otherwise support one another. Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has a similar set up, with networking events held frequently throughout Williamsburg and surrounding areas. When it comes to networking, Tiffany Phillips, membership director for The Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance also suggests arriving early, and making yourself approachable. Other recommendations include: set realistic goals, be a good listener, think about how you can help the other person in addition to how they may help you, and follow up, usually within 48 hours. “Networking is a great way to meet people in your community that are similar to you in some way,” shares Anna Umbreit, director of public relations for Young & Emerging Professionals of Williamsburg, an organization for individuals fresh to the business world. “Similarities could align across personal interests or situations; for example, people in

your age group who are interested in socializing, or fellow entrepreneurs,” says Umbreit. “Benefits include making new friends, learning about a community, accessing opportunities to volunteer, and promoting one's business or services.” YEP offers multiple networking events each month, including a networking lunch, community service events, and social activities.

When networking, “Don’t be pushy,” Umbreit advises. “Even if you are there to build your client base or expand awareness of your brand, you should be genuinely interested in meeting the other

members. Be patient, since relationships take time to develop. If you are present solely to pitch your business, people will notice and avoid you. Strive to create a mutually beneficial relationship.”

Groomer aims to keep contented cats purring By Brandy Centolanza LaDean Gordon, owner of the cat grooming salon Purrocious Styles Feline Designs, grew up surrounded by cats, so it seemed only natural that she would find herself working with them as an adult. “My mom had a lot of cats, and I had to give them baths,” Gordon recalls. “I was good at it.” So much so that she decided to pursue cat grooming as a profession. Gordon has more than 20 years of experience as a cat groomer, and has been doing it professionally for the past eight 44

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2016

years. Gordon operated a grooming business for both cats and dogs in Hawaii for five years. In 2014, Gordon, along with her daughter, Dezarai, decided to train for certification as feline master groomers with the National Cat Groomers Institute of America, Inc. The institute provides intensive training in the safe, proper handling and care of cats during grooming. There are only 300 certified cat groomers worldwide; Gordon and her daughter are two of just three certified in Virginia. “You don’t groom a cat like you would a dog because that can be dangerous,” Gordon says.

“Grooming cats is very much a matter of trust and respect.” After relocating to the Williamsburg area last year, Gordon opened Purrocious Styles Feline Designs, a grooming salon exclusively for cats. She operates the business from her home with the help of her daughter. “I noticed there was a real need for cat-only groomers in this area, especially experienced ones,” Gordon says of her decision to start the salon. Purrocious Styles Feline Designs offers grooming packages for both long-haired and short-haired cats as well as services ranging

from belly shaves, teddy bear clippings, lion clippings, and softpaw (nail caps) treatments. Grooming includes a bath and dry, combing and detangle, face trim, ear cleaning, and nail trim. Gordon and her daughter also treat for hair balls, chin acne, fleas and ticks, matting conditions, and other issues. Part of her job is educating cat owners about proper grooming. Gordon advises cat owners against trimming fur themselves, as they can harm the cat’s skin, and to avoid seeking grooming tips from the Internet. Cats should be groomed every six to eight weeks. “There is a huge misconception that cats groom themselves,” Gordon says. “They don’t. Cats lick themselves to cool themselves, for comfort, but not for cleanliness.” Cat owners from as far away as Richmond, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake utilize Gordon’s services. She also works with local veterinarians and pet shelters to clean and care for cats. “Grooming the shelter cats helps increase adoptions and decrease shelter populations around the area,” she says. Since Gordon and her daughter are trained in the safe handling of cats during the grooming process (they are also certified by the American Red Cross in feline first aid and CPR), they can be on the lookout for any potential health problems. Eventually, Gordon would like to expand the business beyond her home. Cleaning and caring for cats is “very satisfying,” Gordon says. “When you are finished and
