Congratulations! He proposed. You accepted. You’re getting married! Now comes the exciting, but sometimes daunting, experience of planning the wedding. It can seem overwhelming – all of the decisions and details involved. Don’t panic. There are many valuable resources available to make the entire process a very organized and enjoyable one. Hiring a wedding planner is another option to consider.

How Organized and Creative Are You? Some brides know exactly what they want when it comes to their wedding, or they know where to go to find it. Are you the super organized, creative bride? Or maybe you describe yourself as super creative, but not very organized. Maybe you want someone else to help you plan your dream day, even if you’re not exactly sure what your vision is. For brides not wanting to face the task of planning alone, hiring a wedding planner might just be the perfect solution. According to The Knot (a must-use resource for the bride – www.theknot.com), a wedding planner is well worth the money. In addition to coordinating everything from the ceremony location and reception venue to flowers and invitations, a professional wedding planner helps clients save money by preventing costly mistakes. They match clients with professionals and services that best meet their individual needs and

that can provide the services they value most on their wedding day. They help ensure that the bride’s big day is stress-free and fabulous. The Flower Cupboard, Williamsburg’s Premier Source for Event Décor, Wedding Planning, and Gifts, is home to Shayna Walker, one of the area’s most trusted wedding specialists. This experienced, trained, professional wedding planner and her talented group of coordination experts offer complete wedding planning services from Wedding Day Management to fullscale event production. Bride Alexandra Chuckney raved about Shayna’s help the day Brad Howe Photography of her wedding, “She took care for The Flower Cupboard of everything from reception room layout and setup, flowers, band set-up, and food management. She also had a great way of making sure everyone was where they needed to be at the right time. She was wonderful!” A huge part of Shayna’s success is her belief that a wedding day is sacred. “We attend to every detail in our planning. We want to ensure that a bride’s day is as perfect and magical as possible,” says Shayna. With so many fabulous options for engaged couples, Shayna has full experience planning receptions, both large and more intimate, in banquet halls, outside, on historic properties, at a winery, at country clubs, and at the many other options available in Williamsburg and beyond. Regardless of the type of reception you are dreaming about, you can put your trust in Shayna to help you realize your dream. To reach Shayna Walker, visit www.flowercupboard.com, email at shayna@flowercupboard.com or call (757) 220.0057. Regardless of whether you hire a planner or do the planning yourself, there is one vitally important aspect that will guide every decision you make – the budget.

The Budget

The average couple today takes about eight to twelve months planning their big day. A lot can be done during that time, but there are definite starting points to help you get the ball rolling. The first suggestion is to determine a budget. It is on this that every decision will be based. Next, finalize your guest list. By accomplishing these two steps, you will be able to narrow down your choices for the reception venue. Each location is different, and the number of guests that can be accommodated at each will vary as well.

The Venue Many couples today choose a particular theme or style of wedding, which also helps determine their choice of venues. Beach, country, vintage, modern, and classic are just a few of

the many options available. In article entitled “Receptions, Accommodations, Catering/Rental Opportunities” on page 14, there are resources listed to help you determine the ceremony and the reception locations. Also to be included in the budget are catering costs, the bar tab, cost of wedding favors, and much more. You will quickly appreciate the expenses incurred for your upcoming marriage. Once the reception location has been decided upon, now is a good time to begin researching invitations and other wedding stationery, florists, cake designers, photographers, musicians, wedding rings, and wedding attire.

Invitations and Wedding Stationery Since the invitation is your guests’ first peek at your wedding, make sure they accurately represent your chosen theme/style. Parlett’s Paper Expressions in New Town is the ultimate place to go when ordering invitations and other stationery items. Owner Jackie Sunderland and her sister, Sue Hill, both Williamsburg natives, have over 15 years of experiParlett’s ence in creating and designing beautiful invitations and stationery. Their unique designs have won over 20 awards and accolades from industry leaders and international shows.

Dr. Monica J. Contract, DMD

Jackie has one important suggestion for brides. She says to be sure you get to physically hold and see your invitation before ordering. On many occasions, Jackie has had to help brides “fix” invitations they bought online or at a different store. Either the card stock is not heavy enough, the ink not bright enough, the type not large enough, and the list continues. Jackie points out that by the time she is able to help the bride salvage her invitation, the bride often ends up paying more than if she had come to Parlett’s in the first place. Parlett’s personal service and attention and their invitation creations are what keep their clients coming back. So take the simple path and let Jackie and Sue take care of the stress involved with your wedding invitations and stationery. (www. parlettspaperexpressions.com phone: 757. 561.0231)

The Precious Gem in Merchants Square offers a brilliant display of fine, high-end jewelry created by designer and master jeweler, Reggie Akdogan. With over 30 years in business, Akdogan has been creating beautiful pieces for people all across the country and abroad. If you don’t see exactly what you are looking for, Akdogan will create it for you. He can ensure that you and your groom have precisely the stunning jewelry you desire for your wedding. The Photographer Another important part of your wedding will be the photographer. Chances are you will be photographed more on this one day than any other day in your life. So picking the right photographer is a big deal. Be sure to check on package deals, the different types of photo sessions offered, film v. digital, online galleries, and references. Helen’s Place is a popular choice of photographers for many brides. Helen and her professional, attentive staff capture both the beautiful, ceremonious moments of a wedding as well as the spontaneous ones, thus producing a gallery of photos to help the couple relive every second of their special Helen’s Place

(www. colonialphotographyva.com phone: 757.229.1702) Leah Kraus Photography is another popular choice for brides. Leah’s passion for capturing beauty, dimension, and the overall feeling and atmosphere of each bride’s special day is obvious in her work. For Leah, “Nothing can replace portraying life’s precious moments, especially a woman’s wedding day.” Leah looks at each event as a modern art that tells a story. “I enjoy recording the uniqueness of each couple’s story and their personal style,” says Leah. Kraus takes pride in adding an authentic dimension to her work in order to portray a fresh perspective. “I love my work and experience with each couple. The Cake(s) Wedding cakes today are creative and can represent the personalities of the bride and groom. With endless possibilities, how do you decide what you want? The first step is to figure out your style. If your wedding is beach-themed, see if your baker can create a cake decorated with sugar shells. Or if your wedding has a vintage feel to it, something with lace and roses might be a good choice. Grooms’ cakes have become very popular as well. Many brides like to surprise their new husbands with his favorite flavor of cake or a special style of cake that is completely different than the larger wedding cake. One bride had her baker design a cowboy boot cake for her new husband. If you have not yet researched cakes, don’t let the sticker price shock you. A slice of cake usually starts at $1.50 a slice and can go up to $25.00 or more. Obviously, the more complicated the cake, the more you’ll pay. When looking for the perfect cake, be certain that it will taste as good as it looks. Ask your baker to let you sample the

flavors and types of cakes you are interested in. There are so many delicious combinations available today, don’t hesitate to try it them all. And above all else, don’t forget to eat a piece at your wedding. Just because brides in our area voted Charlie The Knot Best of Weddings 2011 Pick doesn’t mean he has recently become known as an incredible cake designer and baker. Charlie, of Wedding Cakes by Charlie, has been delighting his clients with delicious, wonderfully creative, beautiful cakes for over 30 years. One glimpse of his masterpieces on his website (cakesbycharlie.com) will have you intrigued. And each of Charlie’s customers faces the same tough decisions: which flavor of cake – chocolate, vanilla, lemon, coconut-pecan crème cake, and more – should I choose? Next, the filling flavors must be decided upon. Again, how can you choose between chocolate, mint, vanilla, hazelnut, mocha, raspberry, browned butter, and others? (www.cakesbycharlie.com phone: 804.785.2217) Alice Cooke of CakeAlicious has been in high demand by brides all over the area for many years. She began baking cakes in 1988, and over the years, she has learned from famous master bakers, always incorporating new techniques into her creations. Alice’s clients rave about her beautifully designed and wonderfully delicious works of art (to see them, visit creationsfromtheheart.org). Recently opened is Cooke’s “CakeAlicious Design Studio”. Here customers will find a tempting display of cupcakes and other sweet treats available on a daily basis. Also for sale are cake toppers, sugar flowers,

Pre-Wedding Pampering Unfortunately, stress is a very common factor in wedding planning. Fortunately, there are many ways a bride can de-stress. Think about the following ideas to help you remain calm and take care of the most important person in the wedding – YOU. The Wedding License In the city of Williamsburg, marriage licenses are issued by the Clerk of the Circuit Court, located in the Courthouse, First Floor, 5201 Monticello Avenue, Suite 6. There is a fee of $30.00 cash. Both parties must appear before the Clerk to obtain a license. The bride and groom must each be 18 or older and proof of age is required with either a valid driver’s license with a picture, passport, or military identification. Music plays a very important role in a wedding. It’s the thing that people most often remember. Music makes a definitive statement about the couple’s style and their relationship with each other and with special friends and family members. So be sure to put adequate thought into this component of your wedding. Ceremony music is generally soft, sweet, and often spiritual. These songs are most often accompanied by some type of instrumentalist. Musicians playing an organ, piano, harp, trumpet, and guitar are popular for the vows portion of the wedding. Marian Hardingis a beautiful choice when a couple chooses a harpist. One of the founders of the Williamsburg Symphonia in 1984, Harding is a highly regarded musician in the Hampton Roads area. (Marian Harding: 757.229.4439) Reception music is totally different, in most cases, than the music for the actual ceremony. Are you a bit of a rocker? Do you and your new husband love country songs? Are you more interested in the big band type of music? Or do you want all popular hits to keep everyone’s feet moving? Once you have decided on the type of music, you must decide whether a band or DJ will best accommodate your music desires. Often, budget will play a big role in the decisionmaking process. Another key factor is seeing and listening to your choices of DJs or bands. Notice their dress, the crowd’s

problem. Many brides choose to have their teeth whitened so lip color can be the last thing on their mind. She believes that this service gives patients a reason to smile. As a bride, you want to look your very best, both up close and in the many photographs that will be taken of you. Many grooms also take advantage of this service. After a thorough examination, Dr. Contract will be able to inform you about which whitening service is best for you – inoffice whitening or at-home whitening. Whichever you choose, you are sure to be confident and smiling on your special day. (www.williamsburgsmiles.com phone: 757.220.6727) Who doesn’t love a great massage or facial? Wedding Favors A wedding favor is a great way to confirm to your family and friends that you appreciate their support on your wedding day. Whether crafty, artsy, edible, or traditional, there is a favor to fit your style. Choose everything from flip-flop bottle openers, personalized wine glasses, topiary photo holders, and luggage tags to hot sauce, cotton candy, and personalized chocolates. There is a wedding favor to fit every budget and style.

Arrive in Style Many newlywed couples often choose to stay with their wedding party on the way to the reception. This gives the group a little time to celebrate with the new bride and groom. One way to achieve this is to rent a long limousine, party bus, trolley, or other type of group transportation. No one can doubt there’s a party going on with a decked out limo or trolley. For more traditional couples wanting to celebrate their

vows more privately, smaller vehicles are often an option. Riding to the reception in a stretch limo, carriage, vintage car, or on horseback can add extra meaning for the newlyweds.

Fun Facts Mark and Alex have known each other since they were three. They went to the same middle school, but separated in high school when Mark went to Lafayette and Alex went to Jamestown. They separated even further in college while Alex was at the University of Alabama and Mark attended rival Auburn. However, they did see each other on holidays and on occasional college visits with friends. While accompanying Mark on a mission trip to Nicaragua, the two developed a deeper relationship. After pursuing their own interests for about a year and keeping in touch through emails, the two were finally together in Williamsburg. After dating for three months, Mark proposed to Alex on a beautiful spot overlooking the James River. It was Christmas Eve. Mark gave his groomsmen monogrammed shirts to wear in the wedding. They also bought suits instead of renting tuxes, as the cost was about the same. Shayna Walker from the Flower Cupboard helped make Alex’s special day even more brilliant. Alex wore cowboy boots for the reception. Mark and Alex share a deep faith in God. Before their wedding they wanted to pray together but not see each other. So they held hands separated by a wall so that they would not see each other.

WILLIAMSBURG WELCOMES

Your Dream for a Lifetime. Be Inspired. Brides all over the Hampton Roads area and Richmond are about to change the way they shop for a wedding gown. Located in Williamsburg, in the heart of New Town, The Inspired Bride offers a refreshing departure from big box bridal shops and over-priced boutiques. Brides can indulge in the premier bridal salon experience but still have the satisfaction of taking home a beautiful gown at a great price. Just one peek in the window and brides know they have found a true gem filled with breathtaking gowns by some of today’s most admired designers that are not available at other salons in the region. “We carry gowns fashioned by such extraordinary designers as Sottero and Midgely, La Sposa by Pronovias, Kathy Ireland Bridal, Ella by Essence of Australia, and Stella York,” says salon owner Jamie McLean. “Regardless of whether our brides are 25 or 55, first wedding or not, our beautiful selection ensures that each bride will find the gown of her dreams.” Though just stepping into The Inspired Bride is an exhilarating experience on its own, it is just the beginning for the bride. “Shopping for and purchasing a gown is a special experience

that we want each of our brides to remember fondly,” says Susan Sander, salon manager and bridal consultant specialist. “Our brides deserve and receive our full attention. We are here to help them choose a gorgeous gown, keeping in mind their budget and style. Our brides are princesses, and we treat them accordingly.” Within this intimate and elegant bridal salon, Jamie and Susan begin creating one of the most memorable events for a new bride – selecting the perfect gown. “While each bride often has several gowns in mind she wants to try on, we also like to suggest several other gowns for her to consider,” says Jamie. “Because of our familiarity with each gown, we feel it is important to give each bride an idea of what other styles might look beautiful on her. It’s always fun to watch a bride fall in love with a style that she had never thought to consider. Our brides can try on as many gowns as they want until they find the perfect gown.” Selecting the perfect gown, however, is just the first of many milestones worth celebrating.

That’s why once a gown has been chosen, Jamie and Susan offer the bride and her guests the opportunity to celebrate with a glass of champagne or other beverage. “It’s the perfect way to celebrate finding the perfect dress!” It is at this point that the bride can also experiment with veils, headbands, earrings, necklaces, and any number of other accessories that fill the store and capture the imagination. A bride’s experience with The Inspired Bride doesn’t stop with selecting the perfect gown. Jamie and Susan are experts at creating the perfect mix of bridal attire for any occasion. It is generally at the next appointment that the bride chooses the bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dresses, and possibly the tuxedos or suits for the men. The mothers can set an appointment any time to see the beautiful selection of dresses available to them as well. It’s no wonder The Inspired Bride is regarded as one of the premier bridal salons in the region. It is the perfect destination for the bride wanting to savor every moment of her very special experience. --Kathy Zaun The Inspired Bride carries a gorgeous selection of christening attire, First Communion dresses, ball gowns, and other special occasion attire.

Beware of the Online “Bargain” Wedding Gown Have you been lured to websites offering you the “perfect” gown at an unbeatable price? If so, be careful. You could end up spending a lot more once the dress arrives. Do you remember the old adage, “You get what you pay for”? The myth of the $99 wedding gown is just that. The costs you save up front will typically find their way back into your purse, one way or another. For example, most online gowns arrive wrinkled, having saved the cost of dry cleaning, steaming, and ironing. The cost of having the dry cleaners or a bridal salon take care of this problem for you can cost anywhere from $60.00 to $80.00 or more. Using a regular iron and ironing board on your wedding dress is not recommended. Bridal salons have specially designed equipment costing thousands of dollars that will iron your dress without damaging any of the delicate lace or beadwork. Loose or missing beads and spots or stains from careless handling of the box and gown are common when purchasing your dress at a discounted price online. Sometimes these things cannot be repaired without damaging the delicate fabric and beadwork on the dress, adding additional out-ofpocket repair costs. If the dress arrives in the wrong size, you may not be able to alter it to fit your figure. Many times, a very disappointed bride receives the dress she ordered online, only to find that it looks nothing like the picture. Perhaps the lace is different, the seams loose and crooked, there is no boning or support, or there are unsightly bulges. If repairs can be made, they are very costly. Wedding Gown Survival Tip: For a fabulous and stress-free gown experience, take advantage of a full-service bridal salon. Your lovely gown will certainly be free of all stains, loose beading, and unattractive bulges. Your gown will be just as you dreamed it - beautiful and perfectly-fitted. By The Inspired Bride

Fun Facts Greg Carter asked Linsey Joyner to marry him in August of 2011 - exactly three years after their first date at the very same restaurant. Linsey’s wedding featured peacock feathers. Williamsburg Floral incorporated them beautifully in her flowers, centerpieces, and bouquets. She also included them in a stunning green-peacock feather hairpiece. Linsey even had peacock-feather flip flops made for her and her bridesmaids to wear once the night set in. Each groomsman was gifted a backpack cooler with his initials on it and a favorite drink inside. Linsey had a cookie cake delivered to Greg the day of the wedding that read, ”See you at the altar.” Linsey honored her grandmother’s memory with beautiful lockets adorned with flowers in a heart shape. She carried one in her bouquet and presented one to each of her family members from Louisiana. The couple set up a “Candy Bar” with all of their favorite candies and treats to share with their guests.

Bridal and Wedding Party Attire Shopping for “The Gown” Did you know that it can take a couple of months to find “the” gown? Then it may be four more months for it to be custom made. Be sure to begin the exciting process of gown shopping as early as possible. When it is time to shop for your dream dress, consider several tips before heading to a salon. For example, do you have a budget in mind? If you don’t try on gowns outside of you price range, you won’t fall in love with them. Consider your venue and the time frame of your wedding. If your wedding is outdoors in October, chances are, the weather could be chilly. A strapless dress certainly wouldn’t keep you very warm. If you are getting married on the beach, an elaborate gown might look out of place. However, it would be perfect for a country club wedding. Know your style. Are you interested in an elegant, roman-

tic, classic, or more casual look? If you can convey the look you are searching for, the sales person will have a much better idea of which dresses you may be interested in. If there is a particular designer and dress you have in mind, call ahead to make sure the store has what you are looking for. If so, be sure to set up an appointment. Most places will only see brides on an appointment basis. Once in the store, don’t rule out any dress at first glance. It is always helpful to try on a variety of styles to help you decide which is best for you. When you believe you have found the gown of your dreams, sleep on it. That is, go to other stores to reaffirm your selection. Think about it for awhile to make sure it is the one you want. Before ordering, double-check the contract you must sign. Make sure that they have the correct date, size, designer name, style, price, and anything else you can think of.

Where Should I Look? Brides in the Hampton Roads area and Richmond are fortunate to have such valuable resources for gowns and wedding party attire in Williamsburg. Williamsburg Bridal and Formal is a long-time favorite of brides and grooms in the area. It is their personal service and wedding attire selection that keeps customers coming back. They offer a beautiful selection of bridal gowns in an array of styles. Brides can relax while the knowledgeable staff assists with not only the gowns but also with beautiful headpieces, shoes, handbags, jewelry, and other accessories to complement their choice of gowns. Finding a bridesmaid and flower girl dress is easy at Williamsburg Bridal and Formal. The hard part is choosing one from their huge selection. Rob attended Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake and is currently employed as the Captain/Executive Officer of the USMC Recruiting Station in Houston. Rob and Randa’s relationship started through emails after a mutual friend encouraged their correspondence. As Rob was deployed out of the country for long periods of time, the emails turned into long phone calls. Then they met each other at Virginia Beach and fell in love. It was also here that Rob proposed to Randa a year or so later. As favors to the guests and on their behalf, the couple made a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. Randa presented Rob with a signed University of Texas football by Colt McCoy. Randa surprised her father during the Father/Daughter dance when the DJ played a combination an Arabic song she used to sing with her father and the song, “My Girl” (the Temptations). Her father was thrilled.

Fun Facts Sam, co-owner of Williamsburg Merchants Inc, and Michelle, a sales rep in the gift industry, first met at the Atlanta Gift Show. One of Sam’s sales reps at the show wanted to set Sam up with someone he had in mind. Just as he spoke those words, Michelle was passing by. Sam looked up and said, “What about her?” The sales rep, only cordially knowing Michelle, implied she was not available. Later that night when Sam was already in bed, he got a text saying he better get downstairs. Sam got up, got dressed, and went down to the bar. You can guess who was there, and the rest is history. Sam and Michelle carried on a long-distance relationship between Williamsburg and North Carolina for three years. In April 2011, while vacationing on the beautiful island of Kauai in Hawaii, Sam proposed to Michelle. Michelle was thrilled. It was then that the two decided that Kauai would be the perfect place to celebrate their anniversaries as well. Between the two, Sam and Michelle share six wonderful children. They were an integral part of their wedding celebrations, as Sam and Michelle wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
