December. The month of holly-jolly happenings is upon us. So how will you celebrate the holidays? Hanukkah, which had a very early start (Nov. 27), concludes on the evening of Dec. 5. Christmas falls on Wednesday this year, and Kwanzaa commences on Thursday, Dec. 26. The holidays are a time to shop for the ideal gifts and attend glittering parties. However, through it all, the most precious gift is the time we spend with those we love. Our town comes alive during the holiday season. We are fortunate to live in a place with so many fun, signature events including the annual Christmas Parade, Grand Illumination, Lighted Boat Parade and Christmas Homes Tour. All those events provide a happy gateway into the holiday season. And don’t forget Christmas Town at Busch Gardens. Make it a point to stroll Duke of Gloucester Street and see the beautiful, natural decorations adorning the homes and buildings of the Historic Area. People come from all over the country to see the distinctive work accomplished by Colonial Williamsburg designers. We are so fortunate to have the chance to see them right in our own backyard. During the last month of the year, we can reflect as we look toward 2014. We end the month with the huge community-wide celebration of First Night that for the past 21 years, has provided non-alcoholic, family fun. It’s a bargain for $15! In this issue you will meet some extraordinary people that call Williamsburg their home. Chef Bernhard Klinger of artcafé26 is our featured chef. You will also get acquainted with Sheri Squires, owner of Bella, and have the chance to see a truly “Great Find.” I wish the best for each and every one of you during the month. I hope your holidays are happy and bright and that all your Christmas wishes come true. Keep your comments and suggestions coming in! E-mail me at aefimetz@ vagazette.com.

what’s cooking?
Excellence
is the main course By Ann M. Efimetz When Bernhard Klinger was a boy of 8 growing up on his family’s farm in the tiny town of Freiland bei Deutschlandsberg in Austria, he matter-of-factly told his mother his future aspiration. “I told her I was going to be a chef,” he said in a recent interview. “And I have never changed my mind.” Klinger is the executive chef at artcafé26 in New Town. In his five years heading the kitchen of the restaurant owned by Sibilla Dengs, he has won several awards and has distinguished the restaurant for its scrumptious European-style fare. Klinger’s expertise in the kitchen has earned him accolades including the distinction by Best Chefs America as one of the country’s premier chefs. He is grateful for the awards but stays focused on his purpose of providing exquisite and imaginative fare to the restaurant’s diners. “I love to create something from scratch, the challenge you do to your mind,” he said. “You have ingredients and you have to put it together like a puzzle. You put it together, you put it on the plate and you send it out the customer and you get the ‘wow’ effect from them. That is very gratifying.” When Klinger isn’t in the kitchen preparing lunch or dinner selections for customers, he is on the phone, making calls to local providers of meat and produce for fresh ingredients. “It all starts with the ingredients,” he said. “The main product has to be one hundred and ten percent, not one hundred percent. That is a challenge for suppliers, and I spend a lot of time on the phone trying to find the right products.” Approximately every quarter, Klinger changes the menu. He selects seasonal ingredients based on what is available locally. Because he was raised on a farm, he knows what to look for when purchasing for the restaurant.
“Being raised on a farm is a big plus for me,” he said. “I know how a product should look since I grew up with it. You can taste the difference.” He is constantly looks for new ways to present food, keeping apace with trends in the industry, including molecular gastronomy that uses chemical transformation of ingredients while cooking. When he prepares the recipe for the Austrian Kaiserschmarren uses liquid nitrogen to freeze whipped cream for delectable results. Klinger said one of the main differences between American and European diners is the amount of time they spend eating. Fast food has given rise to a host of quick dining options. However, at artcafé26, dinner is meant to be savored. Those who come to the restaurant for dinner on a Friday or Saturday evening have the table for the entire evening. They can leisurely make their way through a six-course meal paired with wines for a truly relaxing experience. “American people don’t take as much time to dine,” he said. “That was the biggest challenge and one of the big differences. They take more time for food in Europe. People love fast food. I eat fast food sometimes, but you have to think about what you are going to eat. I think people have started to think twice about what they are putting in their mouths.” Klinger enjoys living and working in New Town. The location has proved successful for Dengs, and the restaurant enjoys a solid business of locals and visitors. Although his job can bring its share of challenges, he would have it no other way. “I sit at home and I think ‘What would I change?’” he said. “I would do it all again. In the end, if you make someone happy with what you do, that is the reward.”

local spin
By Ann M. Efimetz When you open the door to Savvy Home & Garden at Quarterpath Crossing, you know you are in a very different store. The business, owned by Mary Linda Carmines and Diana Umstead carries a variety of distinctive home décor, that Carmines and Umstead travel the country to find. ‘We travel so much and we know that there are wonderful items available, and we wanted to bring them to Williamsburg,” Carmines said in a recent interview. “Our tastes are different,” Umstead added. “I gravitate toward the vintage and neutrals and Mary Linda gravitates toward the colorful and whimsical.” The women have found the formula for success, with the store now in its 12th year. The women opened the store in Quarterpath Crossing near the new Riverside Doctors’ Hospital last year after 11 years at the Village Shops at Kingsmill. The move has proved advantageous as more people have found the shop when visiting neighboring businesses. “We have a smaller location here, but it is brighter, sunnier and has more traffic and visibility,” Umstead said. The store is fully decorated for the holiday season, overflowing with colorful decorations, pillows, wall hangings 12

and ornaments. “Christmas is a very fun time at the store for us,” Carmines said. The women have diversified their services, offering clients the chance to order custom furniture coverings and paint. The store now carries a line of Amy Howard At Home paint. The product has been designed to give any piece of furniture a new, exciting look. The line features decorative paint, chalk paint, milk paint and zinc finishes. “A new coat of paint can make a big difference,” Umstead said, adding that the store will soon hold classes to teach customers about the finishes available to give their furniture new zing. The women regularly help homeowners design rooms with pieces and décor, offering advice and helpful sugges-

tions. “We enjoy helping the customers, especially the younger customers who may not know what direction the look of their home is going,” Carmines said. “Diana really helps people who need direction in their homes. She is so good about helping people choose the right item. We try very hard to keep the store fresh and bring in new, fresh items to Williamsburg.” Visitors also frequent the store and items have been shipped to various locations throughout the country. The Internet has helped the store’s reputation, with some bloggers mentioning items found at the store, resulting in queries from across the United States. For Carmines, the satisfaction of the business is in knowing customers enjoy their shopping experience and are satisfied with the items purchased. “That is probably one of the best things about the store,” she said. “We try to create a homey atmosphere and we try to know our customers.”

women in business
A beautiful feeling at By Ann M. Efimetz
Bella
The word “bella” in Italian means beautiful. It’s an appropriate name for a store that helps women look and feel their best. Owner Sheri Squires opened Bella Fine Lingerie in March of 2002. Since, the business has grown and evolved, becoming the place in town for women to find quality undergarments, slips, camisoles, sleepwear and personalized bra fittings. “At first, I focused on well-made sleepwear and quality basic bras for those of us who wanted something more than was available but didn’t have time or desire to leave town,” Squires said. “I also had some really special European products showcased from the very first day I opened.” As time passed, Squires began to develop a niche market for specialty sizing and personalized bra fittings. “Today, we still offer really great quality silk and cotton sleepwear but the bulk of our clients come for bra fittings or to find a swim suit in a bra size that a lot of women don’t even know exists,” she said. “My clients aren’t just locals or tourists. I have girls in who take trips from neighboring states to Williamsburg specifically for a bra fitting at Bella.” Squires carries cup sizes AA to KK, and band sizing that starts at 28. Squires ships products throughout the country, making several trips to the post office weekly. Although Bella carries only ladies products, Squires welcomes numerous men to the store to find gifts for the women in their lives. “We do a lot of gift wrapping at Bella, especially this time of the year,” Squires said. “And, our gift certifi-
cates are a good reason for him to come up the stairs.” Squires has found satisfaction as a business owner in Merchants Square. She has been pleased by the support offered to her as an entrepreneur. “I have benefited from the encouragement and support from other business owners in Williamsburg,” she said. “There is a real community feeling of wanting one another to grow and flourish. “ She enjoys the business aspects of the store, but is most satisfied helping customers. “I am happiest about the service I provide. I really like knowing that I have worked hard to grow the business and have paid my bills and have learned so much, but what I like best when women tell me they never imagined walking in the door that walking out they would feel so good.” Having the business has given her insight into what it takes to succeed, and she offers advice to women who may be considering their own venture. “She needs to understand the depth of her commitment. It takes a lot of time and energy to have a business,” Squires said. “She should make sure she is choosing something that she is going to enjoy doing, because she’s going to be doing a lot of it.” Squires will continue improving on what has given her business staying power. “I want to just keep doing better the things we are already doing well, fitting bras and offering the best quality sleepwear foundations and sleepwear I can find,” she said. “Since the demand for swimwear sold by the bra size has been really strong the last few years, Bella will continue to expand in that direction.” Photos by Ann M. a great find
By Ann M. Efimetz If you are passing down Merrimac Trail and pass Aladdin Consignments you may see the distinctive antique stain glass window glimmering in the sun. The rich colors and whimsical peacock draw in the eye and make for a visual treat. The large piece is 80 inches long and 56 inches wide and would make a unique piece for the right home or business. Lori Detwiler, owner of Aladdin, said the piece arrived at her store when a local resident was leaving our area to move and couldn’t take the piece along. The window was originally purchased by the resident and his wife when they lived in Portugal. The window was restored, and most recently was the focal point of their James City County home. The store’s large front windows provide the ideal showcase
for the beauty of the glass. “It shows at its best with natural light in back of it,” she said. The window is priced at $1,199.00.

Holly Jolly Christmas events By Ann M. Efimetz
December is like no other month. There are events galore running the gamut from holiday dinners to special shopping opportunities and other community-wide celebrations. This year, the annual Christmas Parade, hosted by the Greater Williamsburg Area Chamber & Tourism Alliance is scheduled for Saturday Dec. 7. The theme is “Christmas Trees and Memories” and will feature floats, bands and groups, marching Duke of Gloucester Street to Richmond Road. The parade ends at William & Mary Hall. Also on Dec. 7 is the annual Green Spring Garden Club’s Christmas Homes Tour, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. This year, the tour will showcase five homes located within the Historic Area, Catherine Blaikley House and Blaikley Kitchen, Bryan House, Newell Home, Elizabeth Carlos House and Edinburgh Castle Tavern. The Yorktown Lighted Boat Parade is held on the York River. A flotilla of brightly-lit recreational and sail40

ing vessels parade during this unique event held during the holiday season. It is a must-see for boaters and landlubbers alike. This year’s parade is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Boats will pass by the Yorktown waterfront around 8 p.m. for judging. Grand Illumination traditionally heralds the beginning of the holiday season. The celebration includes the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums, fireworks and varied entertainment. This year’s Grand Illumination is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8. Before the fireworks at 7 p.m., there will be musical performances from multiple stages. Throughout the remainder of the month there are special concerts, theatrical events and artistic offerings across greater Williamsburg designed to get you in the spirit of the holiday season. At Colonial Christmas at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center holiday traditions of 17th- and 18th-century Virginia are recalled through special interpretive programs. Dec 26-31 there is period musical entertainment offered.

The end of the month heralds the beginning of the year. First Night 2014 will be held Tuesday, Dec. 31. Performances begin at 7 p.m. and run through the evening. The festivities cap with a huge fireworks display at Zable Stadium at the College of William and Mary. Last year more than 3,000 people watched as the sky lit up with a panoply of color, welcoming in the new year. Karen Peifer, the former vice president of communications and marketing, said the event will feature fun for the entire family. Dozens of acts running the gamut from acrobats to dance bands will give people the chance to celebrate with friends or family. “First Night for me brings Williamsburg to life at night, and provides a safe, enjoyable encounter for all ages,” she said. “The visitors love moving from venue to venue, the artists love the non-alcoholic atmosphere.” The popular children’s show will again be held at Matthew Whaley. Kids activities will be held 3-7 p.m., giving the younger ones a chance to celebrate with fun especially chosen for the little ones.
The entire downtown area and the College of William and Mary come alive with a different look during the event. “It’s a little more contemporary for the magic moment on New Year’s Eve,” Peifer said. “You can stroll down the street, eat a pizza or a fried Oreo, drop in and out of musical entertainment, bump into friends, laugh with strangers, watch fireworks at midnight and go home safely. It’s fun and comfort at its best.” Admission to the entertainment is through a First Night button. They cost $15 and are available at several locations throughout town during December. Visit www.firstnightwilliamsburg.org for the list of merchants carrying the buttons, a listing of the entertainment and food locations.

Jenna and Barry Heuser, owners of Groomz Mobile Dog Grooming, want to make the holidays less stressful for pet owners and their dogs. Instead of bringing your four-legged friend to a groomer, the Heusers bring the dog groomer to you. The Groomz van arrives at the home ready with all the supplies needed to give dogs a full-service treatment. “We try to alleviate stress for the dog,” Jenna Heuser said recently. “It can be stressful for the owner and the dog to be left at a salon for hours. We can alleviate the stress because we do this in our van right
in the homeowner’s driveway.” Having the dog groomed by experienced groomers in comfortable surroundings at the dog owner’s home can make a significant difference during the hectic holidays. “It is a stress reliever,” she said. “Stress at the holidays is enough. While you are wrapping presents, we can be grooming your dog in the driveway.” Heuser added that holidaythemed bandanas and bows are available. “We give dogs a holiday look and feel and they will look perfect under the tree when we are done.” For more information visit www.groomz2u.com

retiring in williamsburg
The new Landing By Ann M. Efimetz
There is a palpable feeling of excitement in the air at Williamsburg Landing. The continuing care retirement community has completed a nearly two-year, $26 million renovation project.
The project was needed after discovery in 2010 of structural deficiencies in the original design of building. The upgrades to the building have extended the life of the building for at least 35 years. The first project completed was the creation of the Cove Cafe, an informal dining room featuring a hearth pizza oven, cappuccino station, expanded kitchen

and a lounge and bar serving alcohol, which is a first for area retirement communities. The process was all encompassing and existing amenities including the formal dining room, 24-hour library, auditorium, bank, guest suites, offices, hair salon and other common areas were updated during the renovation, including the gift shop, centrally located in the lobby. “You can see everything in the store now,” said LeAnn Cowles, gift shop manager. “This is one of the first things you see when you come in the lobby. We have tried to make it look as inviting as possible so people will come in and see all that we have.” All of the Landing Building apartments have been upgraded to better serve senior needs. “Accessibility was key,” said Landing president and CEO Steve Montgomery. “In renovating the apartments we added wide doors, and bigger bathrooms that have the ability to accommodate wheelchairs. So in terms of accessibility, we meet that standard hands down.” “There is a big focus on aging in place,” Kathy Kammer, senior director of community relations added. “And a lot of the residents here are doing just that.” The Landing is far from resting on their laurels. Montgomery said there is a continued analysis of services, including Woodhaven, which offers multi-level healthcare. There is constant vigilance on how to better serve those who call the Landing home.

done naturally
By Ann M. Efimetz
Each year, in the span of about four days, a dozen Colonial Williamsburg floral designers and carpenters bedeck approximately 80 sites (exhibition buildings, administrative offices, taverns, shops, retail shops and guest houses) through the Historic Area with unique natural decorations. Each year, the designers come up with new ways to decorate doors, windows and railings with exquisite natural items. Those walking through the Historic Area may discover wreaths adorned with dried fruits or veg-
etables, feathers, cotton, seed pods, magnolia leaves, corn cobs, sunflowers, seashells and a variety of other natural elements. The range of material is expansive, with the only stipulation that the material used must have been present in colonial times. Some of plant items found on the wreaths and swatches still grow in gardens across town. Each designer works on creating decorations for up to a dozen buildings. The choices for the decorations are left up to each designer and are generally

Homes open on Christmas tour By Ann M. Efimetz
The Green Spring Garden Club’s 54th annual Christmas Homes Tour is scheduled 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 Six private residences in and around Colonial Williamsburg will be open to the public during the event, several for the first time. A hallmark of the tour is the beautiful decorations made by garden club members to complement the season and the décor of each house.
Club member Deanna Isemann will create colorful holiday arrangements for the Newell Home, located on N. Henry Street. “Last year I made seven arrangements for the tour,” Isemann said recently. “We jump in where we are needed.” She recently created a holiday arrangement featuring cryptomeria, magnolia leaves, box-

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor
