There truly is no place like Williamsburg for the holidays, with its unique blend of local heart and tourist pizzazz. The season opens with a bang on the first weekend of December, offering three crowdpleasing traditions back to back to back. Celebrating its 50th year, the Williamsburg Christmas Parade draws the community out to see 100 parade units march through downtown Williamsburg. After the last unit rolls by, head over to Colonial Williamsburg for the 56th annual Christmas Homes Tour, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into six historic homes. Cap opening weekend with Grand Illumination, a spectacle that lights up the Revolutionary City with candles, bonfires, cressets and fireworks launched from multiple locations. One location these fireworks will launch from is the Governor’s Palace. In this issue’s Area History feature, read about the archaeological dig that unearthed the remains of the palace in 1930. As the season continues, check items off Christmas lists at various local shopping gems. Master Craftsmen, for one, offers one-of-a-kind pewter collectibles and silver jewelry, crafted inhouse by owner Holly Shields. Take a day trip to downtown Smithfield, where The Christmas Store serves up year-round Christmas cheer, as well as thousands of holiday ornaments and decorations. While out and about, visit one of Hampton Roads’ growing number of craft breweries, quickly becoming gathering spots for entertainment and socializing with friends and family. Two Williamsburg standouts are Alewerks Brewing Co. and Brass Cannon Brewing. December in Williamsburg bursts with performing arts. A beloved tradition, the Virginia Regional Ballet’s performance of “The Nutcracker” takes place Dec. 12 and 13. To see dancing on ice, visit Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town where figure skating champion Elvis Stojko will perform in a brand new ice show, “‘Twas That Night.” If inspired by Stojko, try some of your own moves at Colonial Williamsburg’s first-ever ice rink, installed on Duke of Gloucester Street until February. While there, you might spot Father Christmas strolling through Merchants Square. It’s Lance Smith, a Newport News native and a longtime magician, who radiates Santa’s love to all those around him. In Colonial times, Santa Claus wasn’t a part of Christmas celebrations. Throughout December, “A Colonial Christmas” will bring to light holiday traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries at historic Jamestown and Yorktown. Though there’s plenty to do outside the home during the Christmas season in Williamsburg, Christmas in the home is most important. Find the perfect Christmas tree at MillFarm, a local choose-and-cut tree farm. It’ll add just the right touch to your holiday season.

The Christmas Homes Tour: A different side of Colonial Williamsburg By Heather Bridges
In filling historical homes with floral decorations, the Christmas Homes Tour poses an interesting juxtaposition of permanence and transience, the long-standing and the ever-changing. Presented by the Green Spring Garden Club, Inc., the annual Christmas Homes Tour returns for its 56th year on Dec. 5. On this tour, experience a side of Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City rarely seen. The six homes on the tour are private homes. Each will be adorned, inside and out, with fresh floral arrangements—more than 300 in total. Coke-Garrett House, at 465 E. Nicholson St., was constructed between the late 1750s and 1837. When John D. Rockefeller first began restoring Colonial Williamsburg, this house was one of more than 90 colonial buildings that had survived. Though originally constructed in the 18th century, Russell House on 403 E. Duke of Gloucester St. was reconstructed from 1948-1949. The interior is dotted with antiques inherited by the current residents. At 401 E. Duke of Gloucester St., Prentis House underwent reconstruction in 1939, though originally built in the 18th century. Joyce Houff, Green Spring’s philanthropy chair, said the tour is the first time in many years the house will open to the public. William Waters House on 311 E. Duke of Gloucester St., named for a wealthy planter who owned several plantations, was built in the early 1700s and reconstructed in 1942. When John D. Rockefeller first began Colonial Williamsburg’s restoration, he made his first purchase of historic property with Ludwell-Paradise House at 207 E. Duke of Gloucester St. Lastly, Grissell Hay Lodging House on 101 W. Nicholson St., constructed in the middle of the 18th century, retains original rough-hewn framing and much of its Georgian trim. The tour provides “an opportunity to see behind the scenes…what some of the homes look like, interior architectural features,” Houff said. “As well as inspiration with the holiday decorations.” 18

Green Spring collaborated with other community garden clubs to arrange the decorations, many of which stay true to colonial-era decorations. Founded in 1956, the Green Spring Garden Club promotes gardening, horticultural education and community beautification. As the club’s sole fundraiser, monies raised from Christmas Homes Tour are funneled into supporting several philanthropic projects, including contributions to Sentara Hospital and scholarships to Virginia Tech, William and Mary, Christopher Newport University and Nature Camp. The club also helps fund beautification and garden restoration projects throughout Colonial Williamsburg. Other contributions include to the Williamsburg Botanical Garden, Hospice House, Jamestown Foundation and Latisha’s House. Green Spring suggests wearing flat walking shoes on the tour, as a courtesy and a safety precaution. No interior photography will be allowed, nor will cell phone use, smoking, backpacks or pets. Tickets are available at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center and Williamsburg Lodge from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Dec. 4 and 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Dec. 5. Tickets are also available at each house location on the day of the tour. Cash and checks only. For more information, visit greenspringgardenclub.org.

A Colonial Christmas: Different traditions, same spirit
By Heather Bridges
The joyful, warm-hearted feeling that accompanies the holiday season is timeless. But the ways in which Christmas spirit manifested looked a little different 400 years ago. From Dec. 1, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016, “A Colonial Christmas” at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center allows visitors a glimpse into holiday traditions from 17th and 18th centuries. In 17th-century England, the holiday season largely revolved around merriment and feasting. Jamestown Settlement will host showings of holiday film “A Jamestown Christmas,” comparing and contrasting these English traditions with holiday celebrations in America’s first permanent English colony. 22
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015
Daily tours of the settlement’s outdoor living-history areas, at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m., will explore the colony’s early years. Visitors will also learn about the English colonists’ Christmas at sea in 1606, and the hospitality of the Powhatan Indians toward Captain John Smith during a winter storm in 1608. In the settlement’s fort, visitors will find decorated wattle-and-daub buildlings, as well as cooking demonstrations. The Lord of Misrule will make appearances in the fort at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Dec. 5-6 and 19-31. In English holiday tradition, the Lord of Misrule was appointed to preside over Christmas games, revelry and mischief. Head over to Yorktown Victory Center for a different holiday perspective. Here, visitors to the Con-
tinental Army encampment can witness camp life in winter, hearing accounts of Christmas during the war. Also at the encampment, help the quartermaster prepare military supplies or watch artillery demonstrations, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. The center’s Revolution-period farmhouse, decked in Christmas greenery, offers the setting for historical interpreters to discuss and demonstrate 18th-century holiday traditions. Demonstrations include setting a farmhouse table for a holiday feast, open-hearth cooking and candle-dipping. To take a piece of history home, satisfy holiday shopping lists at the museum gift shops. The shops offer books, prints, museum reproductions, educational toys, games and souvenirs reminscent of the 17th and 18th centuries. Admission to both Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center is free to residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg, including College of William and Mary students, with proof of residency. For more information, visit historyisfun.org/ jamestown-settlement/a-colonial-christmas.
Jamestown Settlement visitors can enjoy period musical entertainment during “A Colonial Christmas” on Dec. 20-24, Dec. 26-31 and Jan. 2-4.

Year-round cheer at Smithfield’s
The Christmas Store By Heather Bridges
The Christmas Store in Smithfield offers an escape. Open the wreath-adorned front door and, with a jingle of bells, you’re transported into a world of all things Christmas. A place where time slows, worries dissipate and spirits lift. “We don’t get grumpy customers,” owner Jim Abicht said. In fact, some customers have told Abicht they visit the store just to cheer up. Since 1994, The Christmas Store has offered holiday ornaments, trinkets, decorations and year-round cheer to visitors from far and wide. The store’s success, however, wasn’t something Abicht could have predicted 21 years ago. 28
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015
Abicht and his wife, Elaine, avidly collected antique Christmas items. At the time, Abicht also traveled around selling antiques. He encountered other Christmas collectors, including those who owned Christmas businesses. Soon, the Abichts decided to start their own. Abicht said it made no sense to open such a niche business in a small town. But the Abichts wanted the store in Smithfield. “I think it’s the coolest town in the world,” Abicht said. He’s lived in Smithfield since 1975. Locals seemed to think the same of the store. It grew. And it kept growing, from a 600-square-foot space to its current 5,500-square-foot building. “I guess we gave enough people a unique oppor-
local spin whether they’re visiting the store for the first or the 15th time. “If I don’t know them when they come in, I hope to know them before they leave,” Abicht said. Want to go? tunity to find Christmas things that weren’t just anywhere,” he said. When Abicht buys for the store, which he described as “the fun part,” he selects from companies that design their own items—items you won’t find at, say, Walmart. The store stocks indoor Christmas decorations, from ornaments to Santas to Nativity scenes. There are eclectic items for every preference and pocketbook. One wall is entirely covered in figural glass Christmas ornaments—over 1,000 styles, in fact. The Christmas Store might be the only place in the world you’ll find the Smithfield Pig Ornaments, which the store designs each year. The 2015 pig ornament is the 12th design. From Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, Santa Claus appears in the store each weekend, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays and 1-3 p.m. on Sundays. The store is open throughout the year, seven days a week, and it carries decorations for every holiday, as well as gift items. But that Christmas spirit is what draws customers from around the Tidewater area. “We think our store has its own personality,” Abicht said. The personality comes from the mix of items, but it comes just as much from how store employees treat customers. “We think we have some of the best people there are,” Abicht said. Abicht stressed that store employees always count change back to the customers. The store’s only register is a 1900 brass cash register, and employees handwrite every ticket. It’s little details that make customers feel known and valued,

VIRGINIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Business Leadership for Virginia’s Future
Figure skating champion Elvis Stojko describes his sport as “a positive drug,” a burst of adrenaline that gets in your body and makes you fly. “No matter how many shows I do, no two moments are ever alike,” Stojko said. “There is always something new and exciting about each performance and each audience. It’s an amazing ride.” Stojko’s ride will be the newest attraction at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg this winter, as the threetime world champion and two-time Olympic silver medalist will star in a daily show at the Royal Palace Theatre as part of the theme park’s Christmas Town. Stojko’s show, titled “‘Twas That Night” will open, along with the rest of Christmas Town, Nov. 27 and run through Jan.3. Stojko was a groundbreaking skater, winning world championships in 1994, ‘95 and ‘97 and pushing the boundaries of athleticism in the sport at a time when judges were more impressed by technical virtuosity. That style made him a major fan favorite when he moved on to professional shows. Sandra Bezic, who will direct the show for Busch Gardens, said she is looking forward to working with one of the most popular and successful skaters in the history of the sport. “It’s exciting to me to be working with Elvis,” she said. “He has really pushed himself as a performing artist and an entertainer. He is as good as any skater has ever been at connecting with an audience.” Busch Gardens spokesman Kevin Crossett said “‘Twas That Night” will be a 25-minute show that will have elements of visual storytelling. He
said Stojko will do two to four shows per night. Stojko’s wife, figure skater Gladys Orozco, also will be in the show. Stojko, 43, said his legs have held up well through the rigors of his long competitive and professional career. “The martial arts have really helped my balance, and that saves wear and tear on the knees and hips and ankles,” Stojko said in a phone interview. “I have always searched for my own style, a style of skating that reflects who I truly was. I pushed the envelope athletically, and I still try to do that today.” “‘Twas That Night” will be produced by the same team that created the popular Busch Gardens stage shows “London Rocks” and “Scrooge No More.” It will be built around a story inspired by the famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known by its first line “‘Twas the night before Christmas …” Stojko says he is “an adrenaline junkie” who recently got into racing high-performance go-karts. He said he is looking forward to the challenge of doing a daily show at Busch Gardens. “I have always tried to do stuff that was a little edgier, and stuff that fit my personality,” Stojko said. “If you march to the beat of your own drummer, people will appreciate it. What I do on the ice is genuine. It’s me. I can’t wait to share it with a new audience at Busch Gardens.”

Williamsburg Christmas Parade
celebrates 50 years By Heather Bridges
When you think of Christmas or Thanksgiving, you think of parades, said Patrick Quinn, communications specialist for the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance. “Having our own parade is a great way to kick off the season,” Quinn said. And this season’s parade is even more special. Because this year, the Williamsburg Christmas Parade celebrates 50 years. The “Our Golden Christmas” parade begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5. Presented each year by the Chamber and Tourism Alliance, the parade first occurred in 1965 with the idea of bringing the community together at the start of the holiday season. Fifty years later, thousands of attendees, both tourists and locals, flock to watch a parade of around 100 units from around the community. Organizers anticipate as many as 8,000 attendees for the 2015 parade. “It has been truly, truly an event that the community has grasped,” said Naomi Flythe. “They take it real seriously, although it’s a fun time.” A service representative at the Chamber and Tourism Alliance, Flythe heads the parade’s organization. In homage to the parade’s history, organizers asked the 2015 parade participants to represent themes from each of the past parades, from a patriotic Christmas to Toyland. They also invited grand marshals of the past 49 years to join the golden parade. The 100 parade units include an array of community members, including marching bands, civic organizations, commercial groups, nonprofits and churches. Flythe said the parade represents “the community itself just coming to support each other, really.” The parade also features an abundance of festive 32

floats. Flythe said this has been an initiative over the past four years, with float numbers increasing from 30 to 60. This year’s parade is also special for another reason—the route is reversed. The parade’s starting point in previous years has been Duke of Gloucester Street. But because of the new ice skating rink installed on the street, this year’s parade will start at William and Mary Hall, its previous ending point. Following its start at William and Mary, the 2015 parade will progress down Richmond Road, through the first block of Duke of Gloucester Street, making a right on Henry Street, crossing over Francis Street and dispersing on Nassau and Henry Streets. Flythe stressed that the parade’s route is essentially the same, just reversed. In the end, it’s still the beloved parade that, for 50 years, has flourished in a mission “to bring the community together, open up the Christmas season for Williamsburg,” Flythe said.

MillFarm Christmas Trees By Heather Bridges
Each type of Christmas tree grown at MillFarm has a distinct personality. The soft-needled White Pine, the sturdy Norway Spruce, the clean Leyland Cyprus, the citrus-scented Arizona Blue Ice—Mary Apperson described each type, as she trekked through the farm’s rows of trees. She knows them like old friends. The Apperson family treats customers like old friends, too. Because a visit to MillFarm Christmas Trees, a choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm, is as much about the experience as it is about finding the perfect tree. “It’s just a good, old-fashioned family event,” Apperson said. 34
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015
MillFarm is a family operation, through and through. Apperson’s husband Bill, a forester by trade, started growing Christmas trees around 30 years ago on the farm that has been in his family for over 150 years. Today, the Appersons, along with their children and grandchildren, run the farm, which grows between 8,000 and 10,000 Christmas trees. They replant about 2,000 trees each year. Visitors can walk the fields and choose a tree any day, anytime after Halloween, marking the chosen tree however they wish. “People get fairly creative,” Apperson said. She’s seen trees tagged with everything from a wristwatch to crime scene tape. White Pine, Leyland Cypress, Norway Spruce,
three types of Cedar—the various types offer an aroma, size or shade for any family’s preference. The most popular tree is usually the hypoallergenic Leyland Cypress, which doesn’t shed needles. But Apperson loves the distinct citrus scent of the Arizone Blue Ice. The trees cost $5 to $7 per foot, depending on the type. MillFarm accepts cash or check only. Customers can return any weekend after Thanksgiving to claim their tree. The Appersons will cut it down and help get the tree to the car. “You can’t get one any fresher,” Apperson said. While at the farm, families can grab coffee, hot chocolate, cookies and warm up by a wood stove. They can also purchase handmade
wreaths, crafted from farm-grown plants. There’s just something about “the whole personable experience of getting to pick the tree,” Apperson said. “It’s such a fast-paced, busy world,” Apperson said. “People gravitate toward convenience.” But taking a a few hours to wander the farm, to choose a tree, to watch as it’s cut down, to strap it to your car and raise it in your home—then, it’s not just any tree. “This is your tree,” Apperson said. For more information, find MillFarm Christmas Trees & Berryy Farm on Facebook or call 5662035. The National Christmas Tree Association lists several tips on caring for farm-grown Christmas trees at realchristmastrees.org.

The Virginia Regional Ballet will take the stage this December for its annual performance of “The Nutcracker”—a tradition that’s lasted more than three decades. The shows will take place Dec. 12 at 2 and 7:30 and Dec. 13 at 2. All performances take place at the College of William & Mary’s Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. “These are the only performances of ‘The Nutcracker’ in the area,” Artistic Director of the Regional Ballet Heidi Robitshek said. Robitshek has been involved with “The Nutcracker” performances since the first one in 1984. She now choreographs and manages much of the production.
She said “The Nutcracker” is one of her favorite ballets and one that she’s performed several times in her career. She never gets tired of it. The ballet first debuted in the late 19th century and is set to a score by the Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The events of the ballet chronicle a little girl’s magical Christmas Eve night, so the ballet is usually performed during the holiday season. This year’s performance features professional guests from Butler University in Indiana. The two guests will play the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Cavalier and the Snow Queen. They will dance alongside students continued on page 41

from the regional ballet, whose ages range from 6 to seniors in high school. “Having the guest dancers is always great. The students have someone they can look up to and share the stage with,” Adelle Carpenter, studio director of the Virginia Regional Ballet, said. Carpenter performed in the first local performance of “The Nutcracker” in 1984 and now works alongside her mentor, Robitshek, to put on the production. As an instructor, she feels a great amount of pride watching her students develop; many of them perform in “The Nutcracker” every December for several years. “I love to watch the children come up through the ranks and become beautiful dancers,” she said. To Carpenter, the annual performance of “The Nutcracker” has more meaning to it than continuing a Christmas tradition. “It means preserving classical bal-

The man behind the Santa suit By Heather Bridges
For Lance Smith, portraying Santa involves much more than donning a costume. “It’s not about the beard,” he said. “Anybody can put a suit on.” But embodying and radiating the spirit of Santa—“that’s really what it’s all about,” Smith said. Smith, 70, got into the Santa business around 20 years ago. He quickly became hooked. For over seven years, the Newport News native has spread Santa’s spirit
throughout Merchants Square each Christmas season. An entertainer at heart, Smith comes from a background of 40 years as a magician. He said he’ll use a few tricks, here and there, to enhance Santa’s mystery and magic. But most of the magic comes from Smith’s conception of Santa. “I try to portray Santa as closely as I think that Santa would be,” he said. In Smith’s mind, Santa encapsulates love, acceptance, and empathy. He’s “there for that moment for what they need.” Whether that need is a kind word, a smile, or simply to be noticed. Smith has a way of stretching a moment of interaction, however limited, into a priceless memory. “I have a very definite idea of Santa’s love,” Smith said. As he spends mornings posing for photos in a one horse open sleigh at the William and Mary Bookstore, or as he wanders Merchants Square during afternoons, Smith greets as many people as he can. He said he has talked to people from all over the world. But there’s a special place in his heart for entertaining kids, and the kids love him. “If I can get a child to play with me, I’ve made a new friend,” he said. Smith said children often ask fascinating and, thanks to Google, tough questions. So behind his joking, jovial demeanor is an extensive understanding of the history of Santa Claus. continued on page 47

While in the bookstore, Smith dresses as the modern “Coca-Cola Santa,” who lives in the North Pole, drives a reindeer-led sleigh and wears a red suit. However, when he strolls Merchants Square, Smith portrays either Father Christmas, a traditional figure from history with a much different story than Santa Claus, or an old-time Santa, who wears a long robe and a wreath in his hair. No matter the version, Smith said one thing you can’t do while wearing the Santa suit is promise anything. “All you can do is provide your time and love with people,” he said. And Smith does make one promise: “I love them, and I’ll be there for them.” Find Smith at the following events:

Light up the Night By Heather Bridges
Over the years, Colonial Williamsburg’s Grand Illumination may have varied in size and execution. But one thing has never changed: the presence of light. The first “authentic” recreation of Christmas in Colonial Williamsburg occurred in 1935, according to “CW Chronology” from the Colonial Williamsburg Archives. This included candles lit in building windows and greenery decorating building exteriors. In 1940, this was designated “White Lighting,” a city-wide community celebration. This would eventually become “Grand Illumination” in 1959. Now a long-standing tradition, Grand Illumination officially kicks off Colonial Williamsburg’s holiday season, drawing thousands to the Revolutionary City for entertainment and fireworks. This year’s spectacle will occur throughout Sunday, Dec. 6, with live entertainment starting at 5 p.m. and fireworks launching at 7 p.m. Planning is a year-round process, said Tim Sutphin, Director of Revolutionary City Programs. Sutphin has led planning for Grand Illumination for over 20 years. The event’s creation requires the brains and efforts of hundreds of Colonial Williamsburg employees. “It’s a cross-foundational initiative,” Sutphin said. This year’s event features candle-lit windows and bonfires, entertainment and music for all ages across 58
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015
four stages, a Fifes and Drums performance and, of course, the much-anticipated fireworks show. These fireworks are a little different: “They’re not the traditional ‘high up in the sky’ fireworks,” Sutphin said. The Grand Illumination fireworks launch simultaneously from multiple locations throughout the Revolutionary City. “You can be anywhere and see a terrific fireworks show,” Sutphin said. Sutphin advises guests to arrive early. Not only to grab a good spot in front of a stage, but to enjoy the entertainment available throughout the day. Starting at 10:30 a.m., tours, dining, live music and shopping will occur throughout a Revolutionary City decked in natural decorations. Check out a live auction at the Market House in the afternoon. For some indoor options, check out a special Illumination Feast at the Williamsburg Lodge or A Grand Medley of Entertainments at the Kimball Theatre in the evening. Patience is key, Sutphin said, especially when leaving. There may be a crowd trying to get home, so hang out in the Revolutionary City for a bit. “Grab some cider and warm your hands by one of the bonfires,” Sutphin said. In fact, that time might hold the night’s most magical moments. As people slowly roll away, some linger, basking in the glow of Duke of Gloucester Street.
“There’s that magical feel with the cressets still burning,” Sutphin said. “It’s just a very jovial, good way to start your holiday season.” Colonial Williamsburg singleday admission tickets are $40.99 for adults and $20.49 for children ages 6-12. Other admission options are available. Park at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center at 101 Visitor Center Drive. From 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., shuttle buses will run every half hour from the center to all regular stops in the Revolutionary City. From 5:30-6:45 p.m., an express shuttle will run only from the center to the Palace stop. From 6:45-9:30 p.m., no shuttles will run. Shuttles resume regular service from 9:30-10 p.m. For more information, visit colonialwilliamsburg.com/holidays/ grand-illumination.

Holly Shields:
Master at her craft
By Adrienne Mayfield
Being a master craftsman isn’t always easy when you’re a woman. When Holly Shields opened the Master Craftsmen Shop in 1982, she wasn’t an experienced silver smith. Shields had a vision of selling hand-crafted jewelry, but there were people that doubted her abilities. She remembers one silver smith who told her she shouldn’t even try – he would do the dirty work for her. But that’s just not how Shields rolls.
With a lot of grit and determination, she began learning by watching people around her, including a female silver smith who taught her how to make rings. “It’s called sink or swim,” Shields said, adding that she wouldn’t have been able to afford the shop if she didn’t learn how to craft the jewelry herself. Now Shields designs and makes silver cuff bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants reminiscent of the 18th century at her Williamsburg shop. continued on next page WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015
63
“They’re timeless,” Shields said. “It’s really nice to know that there’s so many people over so many years who have gotten bracelets (and) still have them.” She also sells silver and pewter collectibles, like ring boxes, cake cutters, engraved baby rattles and Christmas ornaments, which are not crafted on site. Customer Carol Evans said she comes to the shop to buy engraved items that commemorate once-in-a-life-time events. She also loves the Master Craftsmen line of jewelry, and recently bought a bracelet made to match one she got 25 years ago. “They’re timeless. They’re very classic,” Evans said. The Master Craftsmen Shop is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The shop is located at 221 N. Boundary, Williamsburg. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2015
I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor
