As the classic Christmas song goes, “And so, I’m offering this simple phrase to kids from one to 92. Although it’s been said many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you.” The Christmas season never gets old. And Christmas in Williamsburg is a time filled both with long-held traditions and traditions waiting to be made. The local Christmas season wouldn’t be quite the same without the fireworks and flame-filled cressets of Colonial Williamsburg’s Grand Illumination, nor would it feel right without the decades-old Christmas Parade drawing huge crowds to Richmond Road each year. Another Williamsburg favorite is Busch Gardens’ popular Christmas Town, which returns this year with even more in store. Speaking of truly long-standing traditions, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation will present “A Colonial Christmas” at both Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown, exploring holiday traditions from the 17th and 18th centuries. On the side of newer traditions, Colonial Williamsburg’s skating rink returns to Duke of Gloucester Street for a second year. Or, if you’re looking to create your own holiday traditions, check out this issue’s compilations of events and concerts, local Christmas shops, Christmas recipes from local chefs and tips from local experts on throwing a holiday party. In this midst of it all, don’t forget about true Christmas spirit. This month’s issue looks at a few ways to give back. Finally, toward December’s end, get ready to ring in the new year with First Night Williamsburg.

Christmas Town is ablaze with light, fun By Troy Jefferson It’s just not Christmas in Williamsburg without Christmas Town. Busch Gardens is readying for the holiday season and preparing Christmas Town, their monthlong celebration of the season. Christmas Town features eight million twinkling lights, two play areas for kids, wide-ranging food offerings and festive entertainment. “We have made Christmas Town bigger than ever, with more attractions and more time to enjoy them,” Busch Gardens President David Cromwell said. “Christmas Town has grown in popularity each year, and we’re gratified that so many families have made this a must-do holiday tradition.” Christmas Town opens Friday, Nov. 25, and will be open on select days through Monday, Jan. 2, 2017. Joining Christmas Town this year is “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Guests can relive the classic television special and have their pictures taken with the reindeer and friends Clarice, Yukon Cornelius and Bumble at Rudolph’s Winter Wonderland in “Holiday Hills”. Sesame Street will also be part of the fun this year. Young fans can meet their favorite Sesame Street characters, including Abby Cadabby, Elmo and Cookie Monster, and capture a special holiday photo. Families can ride Grover’s Alpine Express and do some Christmas shopping at Abby Cad10

abby’s Treasure Trove. This year Christmas Town also expands its ride lineup. For the first time, Busch Gardens will offer two of its major roller coasters – Verbolten and Tempesto – for visitors to ride during the event, along with more than 20 other rides throughout the park. Guests seeking the ultimate flexibility and best value can purchase a Christmas Town Fun Card for just $38. The Fun Card offers unlimited visits during the season. Active Busch Gardens and

Grand Illumination lights the way to the holidays By Troy Jefferson Colonial Williamsburg is getting ready for the holiday season and the annual “Grand Illumination” event. This year, Grand Illumination, traditionally held the first Sunday of December, will take place on Dec. 4 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. “Come early and enjoy yourself, it really is an event for the whole family,” director of special events at Colonial Williamsburg, Tim Sutphin, said. In the 18th century, illuminations marked major

events such as the birthday of reigning sovereign, military victories, or the arrival of a new Colonial governor. Sutphin said there will be refreshments available and decorations set up. He also said some of the out buildings will be open and tours will be available as well. Some food trucks may also be on hand. The Grand Illumination will also feature musical performances on multiple stages throughout the Historic Area. But the star of the show is the fireworks and they are scheduled to go off at 7 p.m. Sutphin said the north side of

the Capitol is the best vantage point, but the south side of the Capitol and powder magazine are also great spots to view the show. The Grand Illumination is open to the public and some events do require paid tickets.

Christmas Parade hits the right note By Wesley Wright This year’s annual Christmas Parade, set for Saturday, Dec. 3, won’t be quite as big as last year’s 50th anniversary extravaganza, but it will likely be every bit as fun. The parade is now in the 51st year, and in true parade tradition, bystanders can come out and see floats from organizations from throughout the area, in a parade that celebrates community as well as the holidays.

This year’s parade steps off at 8 a.m. -- a half-hour earlier than last year — and crowds can expect to see everything from dogs to boy scouts to businessmen in the parade. The parade starts at Brooks Street and Richmond Road, proceeds down Richmond Road to the first block of Merchants Square, makes a right on Henry Street and continues to Court Street and Lot 44 in Colonial Williamsburg for dispersal. This year’s parade theme is “The Night Before Christmas.”

By Heather Bridges There’s nothing quite like music to encourage the Christmas spirit. Cantori Choral Ensemble will present its annual Christmas concert on Dec. 4 and 11, featuring John Rutter’s “Magnificat.” The locally auditioned ensemble of 13 singers, directed by Agnes French, will open the program with two a cappella pieces: “Gabriel’s Message” arranged by Joshua Shank and “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl. The ensemble will then perform Rutter’s multi-movement work, accompanied by Rebecca Davy and featuring soprano Claudia Kessel. Performances begin at 7:30 on both nights. The Dec. 4 concert will take place at Walnut Hills Baptist Church and the Dec. 11 concert at Grace Episcopal Church. Performances are free, with donations accepted in support of Cantori. Sing along to your favorite holiday tunes By Jack Jacobs Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra will perform a set list of Christmas classics and other holiday tunes for everyone in the family at its Holiday Pops Concert Dec. 3-4. The mix of orchestra pieces and vocal performances varies every year at the annual event, and this year will include performances of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer,” “Celebrate the Joy,” “Christmas Waltz” and other works. “It’s a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas season,” said Carolyn Keurajian, executive director. Music director Janna Hymes will serve as the orchestra’s conductor, and will be supported by guest vocalist Brett Cahoon, who is the lead singer of jazz quartet Good Shot Judy. During the performance of “Sleigh Ride,” Hymes will stand aside to allow a volunteer community member yet to be selected conduct the piece, Keurajian said. A slideshow of images on a large screen will accompany the music during the roughly hour-long event with scenes of Colonial Williamsburg covered in snow and other seasonal pictures. Singa-along numbers round out the performance. The performances take place during Colonial Williamsburg’s Grand Illumination weekend. Tickets can be purchased online at williamsburgsymphony.org/ tickets, by calling 1-800-HISTORY, in-person at any Colonial

Williamsburg ticket outlet or the Kimball Theatre box office. Any members of the community interested in serving as a guest conductor at the event can contact 757-229-9857 for more information. No conducting experience is required.

Come learn how to enjoy a Colonial Christmas By Jack Jacobs Step back in time and see how colonists and the Continental Army celebrated Christmas amid adversity with the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s annual event, A Colonial Christmas. The event allows visitors an opportunity to compare contemporary English Christmas customs with celebrations that took place in the New World, according to Tracy Perkins, museum spokeswoman. Visitors to Jamestown Settlement will learn how the early settlers celebrated the holiday with English traditions far from home, with buildings decked out in greenery and holiday cooking. Daily tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. will teach visitors about the colonists’ Christmas at sea while en route to the New World in 1606 as well as interaction between the Powhatan tribe and John Smith’s trading party

two years later in the middle of a winter storm. The Lord of Misrule, a traditional English holiday jester, and his posse will make daily appearances at the fort Dec. 23-31 to spin riddles and play games with visitors, Perkins said. Also at this time, musical performances will fill the air with holiday tunes. Visitors can explore food preservation and hunting techniques used in winter at the recreated Powhatan Indian Village, according to the museum’s website. At the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown, visitors will hear accounts about how soldiers and farming families observed Christmas, Perkins said. Programming includes a look at how a quartermaster would prepare military supplies and accounts of camp life. At the greenery-adorned Revolutionperiod farm, visitors will see how to set a farmhouse table for a feast and open-hearth cooking

techniques. They can take part in candle-dipping in programming that compares 18th Century holiday festivities with modern celebration. From Dec. 23-31, musicians will perform holiday music.

Annual Christmas Homes Tour promises variety By Heather Bridges The 57th annual Christmas Homes Tour offers a trip through time. Presented by Green Spring Garden Club, this holiday tradition gives a glimpse each year into Williamsburg’s historical homes, but this year, the homes cover a wider historical timeline. “We have homes from the 1920s, and we have homes from the Colonial era,” said Joyce Houff, Green Spring Garden Club’s publicity chair One of the oldest homes on the tour, Custis Tenement, dates to 1717 when John Custis finished his construction of a one-story frame tenement at what is now 202 W. Duke of Gloucester St. The house caught fire in 1776 and was reconstructed on its original foundation in 1932 by Colonial Wil-

liamsburg. Bruton Parish Episcopal Church currently leases the home from Colonial Williamsburg, using it as a place of gathering. Nearby at 201 Palace St., the Elkanah Deane House was the residence of Irish immigrant and coach-maker Elkanah Deane in the 1700s. Reconstructed by Colonial Williamsburg in the 1930s, the inside of the home has much to see, including a master bedroom inspired by the design of a Mount Vernon bedchamber. The Plumeri House and the President’s House, both properties of the College of William and Mary, both hold unique histories. At 119 Chandler Court, the Plumeri House now serves as a guest facility for visiting donors and speakers. But the original residence, built in the 1920s, was home to the college’s former head librarian Earl Gregg Swem. The President’s House, located at 102 Richmond Road and built in 1732, is the country’s oldest official residence for a college president. Located across the street from each other at the intersection of Scotland and North Henry Streets, the Charlotte Brooks and J.C. Darlington Houses were both constructed in the early 1900s. The current owners of each home have decorated the interiors with surprising items. For example, the dining room of the Brooks home, owned by the Dell family, includes an antique Japanese Tonsu Chest and a table from England. And the Darlington house, of the Lampert family, contains a Victrola phonograph. “I think it’s a very special tour, in that we have a mix,” Houff said.

As is always the case, funds raised from the tour benefit the garden club’s scholarships and beautification projects. The club offers Nature Camp scholarships to area students, as well as college scholarships for Environmental Science at William and Mary and Christopher Newport University and Horticulture at Virginia Tech. christmas spirit

Local Christmas shops can help with your holiday list By Ryan McKinnon If you’re still trying to catch the Christmas spirit, there is no quicker fix than a trip to one of the area’s Christmas-themed shops. Decked in boughs of holly and brimming with ornaments, these peddlers of holiday cheer remind even the greenest Grinch that Williamsburg and Christmas go together like figs and pudding. Christmas Mouse With two Williamsburg locations on Richmond Road, the Christmas Mouse is poised to keep the locals and plenty of visitors fully stocked with Christmas accoutrements. Owner Rob Marshall is carrying on the tradition of his father, who opened the first Christmas Mouse in 1985 after seeing storefront space with plenty of windows next to the Chrysler dealership on Rich28

mond Road was available. This year, the Christmas Mouse is carrying lighted ceramic Christmas trees and a brownie and cookie mix in a cast iron pan – two items Marshall said may be the season’s hot sellers. But predicting best sellers is no easy task, even for Marshall whose family has been in the business for more than 30 years. Marshall said he is often surprised by what sells the best, adding that last year’s best seller was particularly surprising: A flatulent snowman. “There is usually something that is a surprise item and you usually have no idea that people would desire something like that,” he said. Regardless of your feelings toward gaseous snowman, the store most likely has something to suit every taste. “We just have thousands of ornaments. We have 20 or 30 thousand ornaments in there,” Marshall said. “We got you covered whether it’s a ballerina or an NFL football or traditional silver and gold stuff.” 1991 Richmond Road, Williamsburg VA, 23185, 757-221-0357 7461 Richmond Road, Norge VA 23187, 757229-8140 http://www.christmasmouse.com

Christmas Shop This Merchants Square institution has been selling Christmas knickknacks for over 50 years. At just 500 square feet, the entire store is filled with ornaments, décor and hard-to-find holiday adornments. Owner Cabell Wallace said despite the store’s small space, they aim to have something for everyone. The shop works with local artisans to stock ornaments shoppers can’t find anywhere else. Cloth angels and wooden dowel drummer ornaments are just two of the uniquely Williamsburg ornaments Wallace stocks each year. “We sell a lot of Williamsburg-related Christmas ornaments that people use as memories of their visit to Colonial Williamsburg,” said Cabell Wallace, who co-owns the shop with his brother. Wallace said as Christmas season approaches, demand increases for handmade Russian nesting dolls The store stocks shelves full of the intricate wooden figurines – some adorned with traditional designs, and others with modern pop culture icons and politicians. Want a Barack Obama or Bart Simpson nesting doll to place on your mantle? The Christmas shop has got it. “We are trying to appeal to both visitors and locals,” Wallace said. “It’s a 500-square foot store, but we are trying to have something for everybody.” 415 W Duke of Gloucester St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 (757) 229-2514 www.merchantssquare.org The Christmas Store in Smithfield If you can’t find that perfect one-of-a-kind ornament in any of Williamsburg’s Christmas-themed spots, consider heading down to Smithfield. local business profile

UPS store makes sure your packages arrive on time By Troy Jefferson As the holidays draw near, packaging companies like UPS prepare for its busiest time of the year. “Obviously it’s busy -- much busier than the normal time of year,” UPS E. Rochambeau, Williamsburg branch store owner, Gina Klinedinst, said. “Our packaging volume goes up significantly.” Klinedinst said the heaviest demand is usually doing the first three weeks of December, leading up to Christmas. “It can make it challenging for things to get there on time, it pushes the limits without having to pay extra,” Klinedinst said. People haven’t been trying to ship their Christmas gifts earlier instead Klinedinst said she’s seeing people wait later and later. In order to combat the busier demand, Klinedinst said she will have more employees working and use one employee specifically for packing. The things Klinedinst and her employees have shipped would surprise you. “We’ve shipped all kinds of crazy things,” Klinedinst said artificial limbs, a wild boar and a five legged calf were some of the things that stick out. 30

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016

Crazy items aside, at the end of the day, Klinedinst’s main priority is making sure everything is shipped safely and in a timely manner. “We want things to get there on time and in one piece,” Klinedinst said.

Packaging Tips Let a store pack your items. Don’t wait until the last minute to ship items.

Christmas in Smithfield By Amanda Williams The first weekend in December, Smithfield will be crawling with people buying antiques, touring historic homes and taking in the decked-out buildings in downtown. Running December 2-4, the historic town’s annual fundraising festival Christmas in Smithfield benefits the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse, which will be festively decorated for the season. “It’s one of our architectural treasures and we try to keep it open every day, but being that old it’s a lot of maintenance,” said Lanny Hinson, director of the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse. “So we use the proceeds from (Christmas in Smithfield) to keep it open.” With so many options, choosing between what to do in the dressed-up town can be challenging. The weekend features an antiques show, historic home tours, a wassail event at the courthouse, holiday tree lighting, Christmas craft and food market, carriage rides and a fundraising concert. The antiques show, open Friday through Sunday in the Smithfield Center, features nearly 20 vendors. A ticket for the show alone is $5, but admission is included with both home tour tickets and in a combination ticket. Six historic homes, festively decorated to fit the season, are featured on two separate tours — one 32

during the day and one at night. The day tour costs $20 while the candlelight tour costs $30; both tickets include admission to the antiques show. The Jordan-Parker House, built around 1830, is featured in the daytime tour along with the Hanson Residence and the Haverty-Leamon Residence, both from the 20th century. Once the sun sets, the candlelight tour takes visitors inside the King-Atkinson House and The Andrew Mackie House, both 18th century structures, and the Folk-Gwaltney-Moore House, built around 1875. The Wassail Event will be at the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse on Saturday the 3rd from 5 to 9 p.m. Not open to the general public, admission is included with the candlelight tour ($30) or combination ticket ($40) only. Wassail, a traditional English wine-based punch, is served hot and there will be non-alcoholic options and ginger snap cookies available. Period music will be played on a dulcimer accompanied by a guitarist, Hinson said. The Christmas market will also take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A holiday tree lighting will take place on Friday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. in front of the Smithfield Times. Holidays are a time for favorite foods By Brandy Centolanza One of everyone’s favorite aspects of the holiday season is the opportunity to indulge in special. Local chefs are no different, and serve up what dishes they enjoy the most this time of year. Sure, you can prepare the traditional turkey or ham as the main course of your holiday meal, but Chef Francesco Fiorello, owner and operator of Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano, prefers Osso Bucco with pasta. “Osso Bucco is a veal or pork shank cut horizontally,” Fiorello shares. “It is a hearty dish that is great to have in place of turkey or ham.” Fiorello loves cooking for family and friends dur-

ing the holidays. “It is how I show my love for them, and I can showcase my passion for food, its tastes and flavors.” Baki Oncu, owner and head chef at Olde Towne Pizza and Pasta, agrees. He enjoys lamb with his family for the holidays, but also recommends an Italian meatloaf as an option. “A lot of people like a heavier meal during the holidays because it is winter,” Oncu says. “Some people use pork or veal in the meatloaf, but I like to keep it simple with ground beef. I add some crushed plum tomatoes, Italian herbs, and tomato paste on top instead of ketchup. Then I serve it with a homemade brown gravy. You can serve it with mashed potatoes or pasta, but I like to serve it with sautéed

vegetables. Add a glass of red wine to seal the dinner.” Oncu suggests taking a basic recipe and adding what you want or what you know your guests would like. “You can twist it and make it your own,” he says. “That’s the fun part of it.” That’s what Chef Patrick Williams with Opus 9 Steakhouse likes to do at home with his family and friends. “I love seeing everyone else use their creative minds to come up with something new to serve for the holiday dinner,” he says. “At home, we have a lot of fun trying to put new spins on old classic dishes.” Seafood is also a popular meal choice during the holidays. “The past few years, I have been on an oyster kick: steamed, raw, baked,” says Chef Ian Robbins, executive chef for Wessex Hundred. “This year at the Williamsburg Winery we will be doing sort of a twist on the classic Oysters Rockefeller. We start with a well-balanced oyster, something not too briny and a little sweet. We are using arugula from our garden, along with some cured, smoked duck breast that we make, and finishing it off with an aged gouda.” The beverages are also an important part of any holiday meal. Instead of eggnog, Chef Jonathan Brown, sous chef at Waypoint Seafood and Grill, likes to go with hot apple cider. “The smell of tart apples, cinnamon, and citrus brings me back to cold winter nights as a child,” says Brown. “It's a smell that triggers the full holiday effect for me, and is something I make every year for holiday gatherings. It's very simple and should be done with whatever you have available. Powdered cinnamon instead of sticks? No problem. Use what you

have and make it to suit your preferences.” And who can forget about dessert? Cookies, pies, cakes -it’s all good. “I have a ton of favorites for the holidays, but one that stands out is chocolate almond toffee,” says Mike Riordan, owner of Mad About Chocolate. “It is thick and crunchy with just the right amount of sweet. Everyone loves it: kids and adults, including Santa.” When it comes to cooking during the holidays, “Keep it simple,” Riordan says. “It's better to cook and bake a few things that everyone loves than to run yourself ragged making so much food and so many desserts that you don't have time to spend with your family and friends. That's why desserts like chocolate almond toffee are great. Make it ahead of time and enjoy it with everyone.”

things to do

Glide into some fun outside By Wesley Wright If ice skating is a pastime or a passion of yours, the skating rink of Duke of Gloucester Street again will be open throughout the holiday season. This year’s rink is larger – 48-by-84 feet – than last year’s creating plenty of space for you, your kids, and friends to try out new tricks on the ice or simply to learn to stay upright. You’ll have more opportunities to practice as the city of Williamsburg signed an agreement in September to bring the rink back for each of the next three years.

New this year, the concession stand will be accessible by skate, so if you feel hunger coming, or if you’re thirsty from an extended period of skating, you can refresh yourself quickly. The entry fee gets you access to the rink, the concession stand, and all the fun you can stand.

WANT TO GO? Tickets: Adults (13 and up) $12 Youth (5 and up) $10, Skate Rental - $4.25 Open daily Nov. 18 – Feb. 21 but hours vary. Photo by Rob Ostermaier

Second Sunday, holiday fare By Wesley Wright Shirley Vermillion started Second Sundays Williamsburg in June 2010 with a modest 20 artists. Almost seven years later, the event has grown to more than 80 booths and has become a staple of Williamsburg arts scene. Showing up in December means you’ll get access to artists who cover any number of genres – just in time for holiday shopping. There is something for everybody, Vermillion says, and she goes out of her way to make sure that’s the case. “Sometimes I get frustrated with festivals that only have one or two genres,” she said. “I like a little 44

of everything. I like jazz, I like rock.” As usual, Second Sundays will take off January and February, so its December edition is the last one you’ll get for a while. True to the Christmas spirit, there will be carolers in addition to the usual musical fare. Vermillion says she values the wide gamut of music, but she values the people who spend their time there every bit as much. “It’s a festival as unique as the people who visit it.”

things to do

Baby, it’s cold outside…

but there’s plenty of fun to be had By Ryan McKinnon What would a warm cup of cocoa by the fire be if it weren’t preceded by Jack Frost nipping at your nose? This December, get outside. Whether it’s a jaunt through the woods with Santa, a reenactment of Christmas on a plantation in the 17th century or belting out old holiday tunes on the courthouse steps, these winter activities are guaranteed to get your blood pumping and stoke your holiday spirit. York River State Park Bring your pup to get some exercise and meet Santa at York River State Park’s annual Jingle Bark in the Park. Santa Claus will be leading a two-mile hike through the park for you and your dog, and afterwards you can get a picture of your furry friend with the friendly elf – who bears an uncanny resemblance and the same booming voice as park Education Support Specialist John Greshem. On Jan. 1 get the new year started with some outdoor exercise by participating in the park’s First Hike Virginia. Meet at the park at 10 a.m. for a twomile hike to the Pamunkey Overlook. The park is also open for self-guided hikes throughout December. The park will be closed on Dec. 5 and 6 for a wildlife management program. Chippokes Plantation State Park Get a taste of what life was like at one of the nation’s oldest plantations. On Dec. 21, Chippokes Plantation State Park will host a Christmas event. Enjoy hot treats baked in the plantation’s outdoor cooking area, along with hot chocolate and cider. Children can make ornaments in an outdoor tent craft area. Escape the nippiness with a tour of the park’s antebellum Jones-Stewart Mansion, which will be decorated for Christmas. Dec. 21, 3 to 7 p.m. Admission to the event is free, cost to enter park is $5 per car.

Caroling at the Courthouse Troll the ancient yuletide carol by joining friends, neighbors and visitors at the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse steps for Carol at the Courthouse. Singalongs will take place Dec. 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Liberty’s Ice Pavilion Do a figure-eight, land a triple lutz or just try to not fall on your rear at Liberty’s Ice Pavilion in Colonial Williamsburg. The outdoor rink returns to Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg for its second year and is open daily from Nov. 18 to Feb. 21. Admission to the ice rink is $12 for skaters 13 and older and $10 for skaters from 5 to 12. Skates can be rented for $4.25. Liberty's Ice Pavilion will be open Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hours vary on weekends.

living & retiring here

Be thoughtful before your holiday guests arrive By Brandy Centolanza The holiday season is about being with family, but it can also pose challenges, particularly for senior citizens with overnight guests in town. Those who’ve recently retired or downsized may find their daily routine disrupted, but there are ways to make the visit with family more joyful and less stressful. “The most important underlying theme is to keep it simple,” says Laura Kinsman, owner of Williamsburg Estate Services, which assists with senior downsizing. “Seniors should not try to recreate the complex holiday celebrations from years past.” It is wise to prepare your home for a visit with family or friends ahead of time. That’s what John Peterson and his wife, Mary, who live in the Colonial Heritage retirement community, like to do. They have a daughter in Charlotte, N.C., who visits with her family each year during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. “Prior to the visit, we go room to room to check that there isn't something that can get broken or pose a safety problem, and we secure electronic gadgets like remote controls for the fireplace and TVs, as they have a tendency to get reprogrammed or misplaced by the little ones,” says Peterson, whose visiting grandchildren are ages 5 and 7. It is also a good idea to plan what you would like to do with your guests during their stay. Peterson and his family enjoy spending time together taking in Williamsburg’s holiday attractions such as Christmas Town at Busch Gardens, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yankee Candle Village. “Our grandson always enjoys a visit to the firehouse with Grandpa followed by a walk in Colonial Williamsburg while sipping some hot chocolate,” Peterson says. “At the same time, our granddaughter enjoys lunch and some shopping in New Town with Grandma, and always coming home with some new costume jewelry. ter and her husband appreciate having some time for eating out or a movie as well.” Dining out saves time and alleviates stress for seniors who may have parted with some of their cookware through the years or just don’t have enough space anymore. “Many families should either embrace the dining room at the new retirement community for their holiday celebration, or consider going out for the big meal,” shares Kinsman. “Oftentimes, when downsizing, much of the kitchen bakeware is sold or donated. There simply is not space in the new kitchen for a large roasting pan or all those serving platters.” 89-year-old Shirley Shipley, who lives at Verena At The Reserve, prefers not to cook when her daughter and son-in-law visit for the holidays. “I just don’t have the stamina,” Shipley says. “Instead, we have breakfast at the dining room here, and then we go out to eat for lunch and dinner. There are a lot of great restaurants in town.” Shipley’s daughter and son-in-law, who usually spend four nights in Williamsburg, prefer not to check into a hotel during their stay. Instead, Shipley’s daughter sleeps on the sofa, while her

husband crashes on an air mattress in Shipley’s apartment. “It gets crowded, but it works well for us,” Shipley says. You may also want to carve out time separate from your family during their stay, allowing guests to do what they want around town during the visit while you catch a little break. It’s also important to remember that the visit is only temporary. Says Peterson: “When the visit is over, the recovery begins to get the house back into the pre-visit condition, and the quiet and tranquility begins to settle back in.”

Some things to keep in mind Most retirement communities have on-site dining room services for holiday meals as well as residential guest suites for overnight guests. “If you plan to use the residential guest suite, sign up early for those holiday dates,” advises Laura Kinsman, owner of Williamsburg Estate Services. Or, “Think about renting a timeshare in the area, where your family can retreat to at night, for more comfortable sleeping arrangements.” Kinsman suggests seniors be mindful of functionality when it comes to a spare bedroom in the house. “When downsizing, it is important to have enough room for your hobbies,” she notes. “I so often see seniors forego their sewing hobby to have room for a second bedroom for when the grandkids visit. That second bedroom needs to function 365 days, not only the three days a year family comes to town. Seniors need to be realistic about how often the space will be used, and what they could use the room for the rest of the time.”

Simple tips for planning a holiday party By Heather Bridges There isn’t one way to plan a great holiday party, but there is one place you should always start. Have a vision – it’s as simple as that. “That would be one of the main tips I would definitely suggest is to have creative vision,” said Ashton Hathaway, an event planner with locally owned Sterling Events. “Whether that is to go into a vintage theme or go toward inspiration from a Christmas movie, or you just want something really classic with Santa’s workshop.” No matter the party’s size or theme, that vision is key. When the party-planning whirlwind threatens to overwhelm, vision will help keep you grounded. Another essential aspect to planning a holiday gathering is to establish a budget, said Tina Bass, another member of the Sterling Events team.

“Have the vision. Have a budget.” Ashton Hathaway, event planner, Sterling Events

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016

“There’s so many available resources that you can acquire, but it all comes (down) to your budget,” she said. Now, you can start turning that vision to reality. In the midst of decorating, Laura Reeves, owner of Williamsburg’s The Catering Company, said it’s important to make your home comfortable for guests – “creating a nice atmosphere,” she said. Hathaway and Bass offered some fun ideas for holiday themes. Movies or books are always popular, Hathaway said, including “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “A Christmas Story” or “Polar Express.” Another classic is the “winter wonderland” theme, Bass said. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box, too. Hathaway described a “fire-and-ice Christmas party” she once helped plan, decorating one side of the room with cool tones and centerpieces and the other side in lots of red and orange. Any party wouldn’t be complete without food. Apart from keeping dietary needs in mind, there are a few other things to remember. “Keep foods relaxing and uncomplicated,” Reeves said. “Provide smaller quantities of a larger variety of food.” Food display is important, too. Rather than simply setting the food out, Reeves suggested bunching certain foods together, or using risers to display foods at different levels. If anything, do the groundwork. Everything else will fall into place. Plan ahead, Reeves said, to keep from getting overwhelmed. “Have the vision. Have a budget. Make sure you give your guests an amount of time to mark off their calendar,” Hathaway said. “It really is all about just laying everything out and getting organized.” Lastly, it goes without saying, but it’s also good to remember: don’t get so caught up in party perfection that you forget the most important part. “Most importantly, just make sure you learn to have fun and enjoy what you’re doing,” Bass said. Reeves agreed, saying, “Remember that (your) guests are coming to enjoy family and friends, and don’t get tied down with the little details.”

things to do

First Night’s the last word for fun By Wesley Wright First Night Williamsburg is back for its 24th installment of ringing in the New Year with plenty of music, games and food for revelers.

A ticket gets you a button which gets you access to the event’s performers, many of whom are part of the local scene. First Night organizers make it a point to bring local artists from throughout Hampton Roads. Festival goes should feel free to move between among the 30 or so musical acts set for this year. All the moving around may lead to a stop at the “Culinary Court” of food trucks. First Night is an alcoholfree event. “Popular food truck vendors will be

on hand to provide the very best traveling cuisine the area has to offer,” said Susan Woodcock Tisdale, First Night’s Vice President of Marketing & Communications. The geographical footprint of First Night is a tad smaller this year and will be centered within a short walk of William and Mary’s Sadler Center. WANT TO GO? When: Saturday, Dec. 31, 3:30 p.m.-midnight Cost: $20 for adults, $10 for children, 2 adults and two children for $50

Putting on the dog for the holidays By Amanda Williams Colonial Williamsburg is home to two longstanding holiday traditions benefitting the homeless animals of the Heritage Humane Society each year. The massive tree sitting outside Mermaid Books on Prince Georges Street will acquire bows throughout December, each one donated in honor of a pet or person. People can choose between large and small bows, $25 and $10 respectively, adorned with

up to three names to hang on the Fur Tree. Bows can be purchased online or by mail. The Fur Tree earned the shelter $6,000 last year, which pales in comparison to their largest holiday fundraiser — the Christmas Bazaar. Last year the event brought in more than $30,000. The 2016 Christmas Bazaar, in its 16th year, will be at Bruton Parish Hall Dec. 10. Between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., people can peruse selections of baked goods, hand-knitted dog sweaters, fabric items for pets and people alike, and more. Coffee and treats greet guests at the door. Every item for sale or raffle is donated and all proceeds benefit the shelter. “You walk in, the door frame is adorned with holiday decorations,” said Ty Hodges, the humane

society’s donor relations and publications coordinator. “There are booths set up all around the room and each one has a different theme – so you have dog items, you have bakery items, jewelry, books, all different things.”

Dubbed the “soup kitchen,” for $25 shoppers can leave the bazaar with gourmet soup donated by local restaurants, a soup bowl and baguette. This year’s soup will be provided by 15 area chefs including DoG Street Pub, A Chef’s Kitchen, Food for Thought and Le Yaca. Visitors can walk away with jewelry, scarves, themed gift baskets, and more. There will be an area full of animal-themed books for all ages and plush pets to adopt from the “Plush Pet Shelter.” This year’s event will add a holiday display for purchase, and food from the “Cuisine Cupboard” to be delivered later. If you can’t make the bazaar or buy a bow, the humane society always needs donations, particularly bleach, litter, cat food, Dawn dish soap, 55 gallon trash bags, high efficiency laundry detergent and gift cards to stores like Petco,

PetSmart, tractor supply stores and Home Depot. Another way to help animals in need: From 12 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 17th, visit the Nautical Dog in New Town for the annual Stuff the Sleigh drive benefitting Ring Dog Rescue and Gwendolyn’s wish, two local nonprofits. Bring food and supplies to donate or purchase donations from the store.

Pre-arranged bundles will be available and sold at cost for donations and the store will accept donations all weekend.

How to help those in need during the holidays By Amanda Williams Adding one more name to your gift list this year could make all the difference for a child come Christmas morning. Through the Salvation Army, anyone can adopt an “angel” — a child or senior in need — and ensure they, too, have presents spilling out from underneath their tree. Families with children under 12 or seniors 65 or older with demonstrated financial need applied in October to be considered as angels at which times they provided clothing and shoe sizes, as well as a small wish list. These details are transferred over to tags that hang on Angel trees so people can purchase what these people need most. An angel tree is set up at the Walmart on Rochambeau Drive where people can choose a tag from the tree and shop for the child while in the store, according to Maj. Karen Hasty, a corps officer with the Williamsburg Salvation Army. People can also get quantities of the angels from the Salvation Army directly, which Hasty said is what many companies or church groups do, then distribute them to their members. One of the organization’s biggest fundraisers this time of year is the festive volunteer bell ringers braving the cold to collect small change in those iconic red kettles. “The kettles are totally supported on a volunteer basis by

the community,” Hasty said. “Folks you see out there are your neighbors and others out there collecting to help the needy in the community.” The volunteers take one to two hour shifts to ring the bell outside local stores, Hasty said. Often groups will take on an entire day and members will take turns working the same location. Food, toy or clothing drives organized by individuals are one way organizations like the Salvation Army and FISH, a non-profit out of Williamsburg, collect much needed items year-round.

FISH provides food, clothing and household items to those in need and is always accepting donations. How you can help: Salvation Army: Host a food, toy or clothing drive, man a kettle for a day, or adopt an angel this Christmas. Call 757-229-6651 for more information. FISH: Donate non-perishable food, clothing, toiletries and household items, or volunteer. Call 757-220-9379 for more information.
