‘The Zone’

A new family fun center has come to the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex. Ever since WISC opened in 2000, thousands of area kids have participated in various sports at the complex located in Warhill District Park. Now there’s a new reason to visit. “The Zone,” that opened last month, is geared toward locals and visitors, to provide hours of entertainment and activity. “This is really big for Williamsburg,” said Lindsay Newell, The Zone director. “This provides so many family-fun things to do.” Regardless of what the weather is, kids, parents—even grandparents can get in on the indoor fun “The Zone” offers. According to Newell, WISC owner Chris Haywood was looking for ways to provide families with entertaining indoor activities. What he came up has become “The Zone.” The new additions are apparent. The former Galaxy Tag area has become “Redemption Games,” which features about 25 arcade games. Players can accrue points and redeem them on special cards. Upstairs, “Clip N’ Climb,” a rock-climbing experience for the whole family, has been constructed. “It can accommodate all ages, 28 pounds and heavier, all the way to any generation and age,” Newell said. The free-standing and attached devices give people the chance for various climbing experi-

ences. According to Newell, there are nine different stations to choose. The upstairs also incorporates a 1,400 sq. ft. indoor playground, a 3,500 sq. ft. laser tag facility and a 250 sq. ft. laser maze. The object of the maze is to navigate through quickly, reaching checkpoints. The goal is to manuever through without breaking a beam. “The laser maze is one of my favorites,” Newell said. “You go in, you hit the start button and the laser beams come on and you have to maneuver through the room. It is really fun. I see adults enjoying this as well as children.” “The Zone” hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. Friday-Saturday. There will be expanded summer hours. So much to celebrate February is here, the second month of the 2015. There is much to celebrate this month including, the playing of the Super Bowl Feb. 1. There’s also Valentine’s Day, President’s Day and Mardi Gras this month. This issue features much of what will be worth celebrating around town, including the opening of the much-anticipated art show, “Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty at the Muscarelle Museum of Art, Feb. 21. The exhibit will feature about 30 of the master’s works, including a self-portrait at age 53 that has never previously been exhibited. Museum director Aaron De Groft, calls it a “once-in-a-lifetime event. There will be extended hours and better parking to accommodate all those wishing to attend. Also in the issue, you can learn about “The Zone, a new, family fun center at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex. It’s geared toward locals and visitors and aims to provide hours of entertainment and activity. The new center features an arcade, rockclimbing, laser tag and an indoor playground. If you are ever on Mooretown Road, you may want to drop by St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. The beautiful church features exquisite artwork, iconography, hand-done by world-class artists. It is worth seeing. Our Local Spin this month features Auto Haus on Second Street and in Yorktown. The Second Street location (in the former Patriot Buick showroom) has allowed Auto Haus to expand to a sunny, spacious area to showcase its luxury vehicles, offer a full auto service and repair facility and focus an entire department on Classic European Automobiles. Our Head of the Class feature highlights Beyond Bricks owners Danny and Adrienne Smith who have implemented learning programs with WJC schools. Learn more about it in this issue. We also have included a recent interview with newly appointed president of Colonial Williamsburg Mitchell Reiss. He has big plans for the Historic Area that will affect both locals and visitors in the weeks, months and years to come. Enjoy the month. One encouraging note about February—it’s the last full month of winter. Next month, spring arrives and our area’s landscape is transformed into something colorful and special.

Jewish Film Festival concludes this month %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

The 14th annual Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival, sponsored by Temple Beth El of Williamsburg concludes this month with the showing of two films, “Cupcakes,” Feb. 8-10 and “Ida,” Feb. 22-24. Both will be presented at the Kimball Theatre at 6:30 and 8:15 p.m. The films have been chosen to appeal to a wide audience, offering a chance for the community to see films they may normally not have the opportunity to see. This month’s offerings feature a light-hearted view of youth in “Cupcakes” and a darker themed film, “Ida.” Here is a synopsis, courtesy of the Film Festival: “Cupcakes”— When a group of best friends in Tel Aviv gather to watch Universong, they are less than impressed by the official Israeli entry. Believing that they can do better, they spontaneously create

and record their own song on a mobile phone. Little do they know, their performance is seen by the Universong judges and soon they are reluctantly thrown into the spotlight as Israel’s next official entry. After initial reservations about their new found celebrity status, they decide to just go for it and find themselves on the road to international stardom. They embark on a flamboyant journey that brings about hilarious end results as they go head to head with the Russian entry in the Universong final. Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 8-10 at 6:30 and 8:15 p.m. “Ida”—Anna, a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of Nazi occupation. Sunday-Tuesday, Feb. 22-24 at 6:30 and 8:15 p.m. Want to go? Tickets can be purchased through Colonial Williamsburg at 229-1000, 800-HISTORY or at the Kimball Theatre box office in Merchants Square.

MEANINGFUL ART %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

The Greek philosopher Aristotle is quoted as saying, “the aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” That saying could apply to the magnificent artwork at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on Mooretown Road. “The artwork is an expression of faith and tradition,” said the Very Reverend Archimandrite Ambrose Bitziadis-Bowers, who was church pastor until last month. Work in the church continues, including the art. A group of world-class artists from Greece recently completed three months at the church, painstakingly working on the icons that are seen throughout the worship space. They will return after Easter to continue their work. “They are Byzantine art artists, or iconographers,” Bitziadis-Bowers said. “It is not just to have an inspiration. You also have faith. They do the iconography with prayer to Almighty God.” The eye is drawn to several focal points, including the grand dome, located in the center of the church. Christ is the central figure, and in the four corners, the four Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The iconostasis is a grand wooden structure that separates the sanctuary from the nave. Only altar boys, 16

church caretakers, priests and other clergy are allowed beyond The Royal Door. “It is the Holy of Holies,” Bitziadis-Bowers said. He explained that the figure of Christ is always depicted on the right side of the iconostasis, and the Virgin Mary is always on the left Other figures on the grand piece include St. John the Baptist, the archangels, Gabriel and Michael and St. Demetrios. The distinctive look of the art is achieved not only through the iconography, but in the use of color. The vibrant hues of red, blue, green and yellow are specially made. “They are not ordinary colors,” Bitziadis-Bowers said. “Some are made using eggs, others are bought

from the Middle East. It is a special type of blue and red that are used. The recipes for these colors come from ancient times.” As time progresses, more artwork will be added to the walls. But, Bitziadis-Bowers admitted, that is a slow process. “It takes time,” he said. “You can’t do this overnight.”

“We are looking for lifelong customers, not just making a sale,” said Rob Carpenter, marketing manager for Auto Haus. The car dealership has locations in Williamsburg on Second Street and off George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown. “We are very much about the customer being our top priority.” Auto Haus has been in business for more than 22 years and continues to grow. Just 20

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2015

last year, the business expanded to Williamsburg, opening on Second Street in the building formerly occupied by Patriot Buick (which moved across the street.) The new location has allowed Auto Haus a sunny, spacious area to showcase its luxury vehicles, offer a full auto service and repair facility and focus an entire department on Classic European Automobiles. “The classics division offer sales, service and restoration

of German and English automobiles that are 25 years and older,” Carpenter explained. “We sell them and service them top-to-bottom. We also do full restorations. We stay very busy.” Carpenter said the atmosphere at Auto Haus is meant to put the customers at ease in a very friendly, casual atmosphere. The emphasis is on forming relationships and helping the customer get into their dream car.

“For us it is more than just providing an item to a customer,” he said. “We put the personality and their needs into finding them the right mode of transportation.” Auto Haus specializes in brands including Mercedes, BMW, Mini, Porsche, Audi, VW, Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo. However, the dealership also sells and services Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infiniti and most other import brands. And, Carpenter noted, foreign cars are not, as many believe more expensive to repair than others. “Contrary to popular belief, to maintain them is not any more expensive than maintaining any auto,” he said. “It is all about maintenance. We routinely see Mercedes and BMWs that come in here with more than 200,000 miles that look great and are running great because of the maintenance.” The dealership offers an iFind service that can locate a customer’s dream vehicle anywhere in the country. “If we don’t have it, we will go and find the car you want. We scour the country, find it and have it shipped here,” he said. That is a service we provide. We do it all the time.” Carpenter said the goal of the dealership is to carry vehicles at various price points so that people can afford to drive the car they desire. “It is luxury that you can afford,” he said. “We are in the business of getting people into the car they want.”

LEONARDO DA VINCI ARRIVES THIS MONTH %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

An unprecedented exhibit of the works of Leonardo da Vinci will open Feb. 21 at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. “Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty” will feature about 30 of the master’s works, including a self-portrait at age 53 that has never previously been exhibited. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Aaron De Groft, director of the Muscarelle. “To have thirty of his works is unprecedented and the exhibit is coming to our community.” If having the Leonardo’s works

weren’t enough, the exhibit will also feature eight works by da Vinci’s rival, Michelangelo. That is being done to compare and contrast the thinking of the two masters. “This has never been done either, at least in this country,” De Groft said. “They were very far apart in their philosophies.” “As a university museum, we are about putting together exhibitions that teach ideas and issues,” John Spike, museum chief curator said in a press release. “They were social and philosophical opposites. Michelangelo was the dreamer, Leonardo, the scientist.”

De Groft fully expects that the attendance record of 50,000 tickets sold for last year’s, “Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti” will be shattered by the upcoming exhibit. Following last week’s full page ad in the New York Times, requests for tickets have been coming in from all over the world, he said. The exhibit is being offered through the Muscarelle’s continued partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Following the exhibit’s debut here, it will travel to Massachusetts for an April 15 opening, which is da Vinci’s birthday. Those who attend will be able to take in da Vinci’s drawings that were lent from the Uffizi museum in Florence and the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, Italy. The works of Michelangelo are on loan from the Casa Buonarroti in Florence. Following the exhibits, the pieces will return to Europe. The idea of presenting an exhibit highlighting da Vinci’s ideas on beauty is groundbreaking, De Groft said. The theme of beauty was pervasive in the Italian Renaissance in art and philosophy, and da Vinci constantly explored the contrast between beautiful and ugly. The works in the exhibit focus on that theme. “We wanted to get at something auto-biographical,” De Groft said. “He grappled with the ravages of old age himself. He was concerned with his appearance.” Youth and age is exemplified in “Old Man and Youth Seen in Profile,” which De Groft pointed out, that scholars Bernard Berenson and Sir Kenneth Clark, regard as one

Danny and Adrienne Smith of Beyond Bricks have implemented learning programs with the WJC Schools. Danny Smith recently answered questions regarding the various programs in place. What is the official name of the program? We offer a variety of after school enrichment programs on site at local schools. Our most popular clubs include LEGO Robotics and Stop Motion Animation, and beginning in January we’re thrilled to roll out our brand new Coding for Kids program.

themselves and become so immersed in our activities and challenges that they forget they’re actually learning! What plans do you have to expand the program? We hope to continue to grow our after school clubs with the goal of providing our programs in all the local schools and even into after school providers such as the WISC and area parks and rec programs.

How did you get interested in doing the program with the schools? All of our programs, including those offered in our playroom, are designed with an underlying educational theme, many of which are aligned with Virginia’s Standards of Learning. That being said, schools are naturally a good fit and wonderful host site for us. What does the program entail? All of our after school programs meet on site immediately following dismissal. There is no cost to the school, they simply provide a room for us to use. We provide electronic flyers and registration forms to send home with students and facilitate the activities ourselves. It’s really a win-win for schools; they offer their families additional enrichment opportunities with the goal of extending education beyond the classroom. What is the program’s goal? Our goal is to provide students with hands-on, child-led activities that promote 21st century skills, collaboration, and strengthen strategic thinking skills. What has been the response among the kids/teachers? We have received wonderfully positive feedback from school administrators, parents, and students. The kids truly enjoy 26

Reiss has illuminating ideas for Colonial Williamsburg By Rusty Carter

Mitchell Reiss, the newly appointed president of Colonial Williamsburg recently unveiled initiatives for 2015, among them lights in the Historic Area to encourage visitation at night. Other proposals include a new RevQuest interactive game and conversion of Chowning’s Tavern into an alehouse. Reiss said he has focused his time on an internal study of Colonial Williamsburg, surveying employees and going through every department in detail. “I am examining all of the foundation’s operations and scrutinizing our efforts against four key criteria: First is and foremost is supporting our core educational mission. Second is delivering value to our customers. Third is benefiting our employees, and fourth is generating revenue.” That includes a recent employee survey that Reiss said he will use to establish priorities. Among planned investments for employees are more management and leadership training, refurbishment of the Franklin Street offices as well as the more than 50 break rooms for interpreters scattered through the Historic Area. Asked what surprises and disappointments he found in the survey, Reiss quickly cited the “dedication and passion” of donors as surprising. “We have more than 100,000 donors. Any college would love to have that base.” Disappointing is the

trend of falling attendance at historic sites. “It’s not just here, it’s everywhere,” he said. Reiss also asked employees for two things: A “quick win,” an idea that could be implemented easily and cheaply to enhance the experience for visitors, and one thing at Colonial Williamsburg “that should never change.” The responses have not been fully tallied. Meanwhile Colonial Williamsburg tried out one “quick win” Reiss thinks will stick: Converting the weekly map of the Historic Area into a daily map, simplified for guests. “When I saw it, I wanted to have a bonfire for the weekly plan,” Reiss said. He also touted Colonial Williamsburg’s relevance to the economy. “We remain a powerful economic engine for the region and the state. Each year the foundation generates almost 7,000 jobs and $400 million in economic activity in the greater Williamsburg area alone.” The crux of the discussion was to announce his initiatives for 2015: Illumination: Install lights throughout the Historic Area; add lights to cupolas and illuminate historic buildings. The goal is to provide “a more enjoyable and inspirational place to be in the evenings.” Alehouse: Use Chowning’s Tavern for its original purpose, offering a mix of Colonial Williamsburg brews as well as Virginia microbrews. RevQuest: The 2015 edition of the interactive game will be titled

“The King’s Advance,” with a mission of saving Virginia during the British invasion of 1781. Open House: In the spring, there will be an open house to “reintroduce CW to the community,” Reiss said. Robertson’s Windmill: The iconic yet historically inaccurate windmill, once prominent in the Historic Area, will be restored and sited just across the bridge from the visitors’ center. Market House: Reconstruction has begun on Market Square next to the magazine. The site will open to the public late in the third quarter of 2015. Art exhibitions: Four new exhibits are planned for 2015: Pueblo Indian folk jewelry and early schoolgirl theorem painting at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum; major showings on natural history in the 18th century and silversmithing at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Expansion: The architectural design work will be finished in 2015 for the proposed 50,000-square-foot expansion to the museums complex. Two plans deal with education. A new generation of “The Idea of America” textbook will be released. For elementary school and middle school students is the HERO digital library of on-demand video, interactive games and teacher content. And Colonial Williamsburg is redesigning its website to “help users more easily locate content that is relevant to their interests.” WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2015
