WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

Last February brought a flurry of activity to the city of Williamsburg. The month kicked off, in fact, with a visit from the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Valerie Simpson, Dionne Warwick and Esperanza Spalding, among others, to Williamsburg’s historic First Baptist Church on Scotland Street. The ceremony for the church and Colonial Williamsburg’s “Let Freedom Ring Challenge” marked a memorable start to Black History Month. There’s much in store for this February, too. Another memorable visit will take the form of 16 works, from six Italian cities, of famed Italian painter Sandro Botticelli. “Botticelli and the Search for the Divine: Florentine Painting between the Medici and the Bonfires of the Vanities” opens at the College of William and Mary’s Muscarelle Museum on Feb. 11, on display through April 6. Whether you love or despise the holiday, Valentine’s Day comes around every second week of February. This issue has some ideas for the day – take a special someone to Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano perhaps, or spoil them with sweets from Wythe Candy and Gourmet Shop in Merchants Square and then go for a spin around Liberty’s Ice Pavilion. In late February, Colonial Williamsburg will present its 69th annual Antiques Forum, “Early American Craftsmanship: Influence and Innovation.” If you want to bide time until the forum, this issue also takes a look at some of the best spots for antiques and consignment shopping.

William and Mary’s Muscarelle Museum presents unprecedented Botticelli exhibition By Heather Bridges The goddess of love, porcelain skin caressed by flowing hair, perches sensually atop a scallop shell. Instantly recognizable, Sandro Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” continually captivates with lush beauty, visible from within the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. An isolated Venus, replicating the iconic figure against a dark background, will soon display at the Muscarelle Museum. On display for the first time in the United States, the painting is one of only two known isolated Venuses in the world. With 16 Botticelli paintings from six Italian cities, “Botticelli and the Search for the Divine: Florentine Painting between the Medici and the Bonfires of the Vanities” opens at the Muscarelle Feb. 11, on 10

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

view at the museum until April 6. Then, it travels to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston; the exhibit’s only other U.S. venue. “It’s just unprecedented,” Aaron De Groft, Muscarelle director, said of the exhibit. The cultural attaché for the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., echoed the sentiment. “(The exhibit) will be the largest and most important exhibition of its type ever organized in the United States,” Renato Miracco stated in a news release from the Muscarelle. The galleries of the Muscarelle are no stranger to important, international loan exhibitions. In recent years, the museum has hosted works by Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, who were Botticelli’s friends.

“We don’t merely exhibit the works and leave it to the viewers to enjoy them as they pass by them,” said John Spike, the museum’s chief curator. “We choose and select the works that are in our shows to tell you something about the thinking of this particular great artist.” “Everyone goes away from the show quite elated … that they could now differentiate between Leonardo Da Vinci’s idea of what makes something beautiful from Michelangelo’s,” Spike continued. “These are philosophical concepts that you need some introduction to before you can grasp them.” What the Muscarelle does, what it will do in the Botticelli exhibit, is tell stories. “We’re trying to demonstrate a narrative thread, because people respond to storytelling,” De Groft said. With approximately 30 works in total, organized across three rooms, the exhibition follows the arc of Botticelli’s career and the context of the time. Influenced by the powerful Medici dynasty in Florence, Botticelli is largely known for his decadent mythologies. When the dynasty fell to Fra Savonarola, a preacher who opposed Medici values, some of Botticelli’s paintings were cast into the Bonfires of the Vanities in the late 15th century. As times in Florence changed, it seems Botticelli changed – his idea of beauty, of the divine, changed. “How do we explain this dramatic change in the art of Botticelli, who goes from painting perpetually sunny moments of beauty and spirituality, to his late works which don’t use fancy pictorial effects anymore?” Spike said. Spike said the exhibition addresses this question.

WANT TO GO? Hours: Closed Monday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday; noon-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday Location: 603 Jamestown Road Admission: $15 during exhibition; free to members, William and Mary students, faculty and staff and children under age 12

At the same time, it addresses something else about Botticelli’s later works. “They’ve never been in as much favor as the sparkling, dancing, Three Graces sort of picture,” he said. “But what we demonstrate in the show, and I am sure convincingly, is no lapse, no jump in quality.” For more information, call 757-221-2700 or visit muscarelle.org.

valentine's day

How to set the right mood on Valentine’s Day By Amanda Williams Looking for a special gift idea this Valentine’s Day? Or maybe you waited too long and are in panic mode. Either way Williamsburg has the answer. A little planning goes a long way when gifting a romantic weekend for Valentine’s Day. A relaxing getaway can be planned for any time during the year — it’s a gift with flexibility for busy sched18

ules. With more than 20 Bed and Breakfasts in the area, the location is just the start. Nestled at the corner of Prince George and North Boundary streets sits The Fife and Drum Inn, which is rated the best Bed and Breakfast in Williamsburg according to Yelp users. Owner Billy

Scruggs said he likes to think it’s a unique and romantic spot yearround, not just mid-February. The Inn, along with most other Bed and Breakfast in the area, offer special romance packages with wine or champagne, flowers and a cheese tray. “I think it’s about the food

and the drink and just relaxation,” Scruggs said. “It’s because of the places to dine; downtown we have a few of the finest restaurants in the state within a few blocks.” His favorites nearby are the Fat Canary, Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill, and the Blue Talon Bistro — all located in or near Merchants Square. But the best is a short drive away to a French restaurant in New Town. “You can never beat Le Yaca for a romantic dinner,” Scruggs said. Williamsburg is also home to the Williamsburg Winery, three breweries, two distilleries and a meadery that offer specialized tastings. For outdoorsy types, secluded hiking trails are within a 30-minute drive at York River State Park, or take a drive down the Colonial Parkway, with expansive views of the James and York Rivers depending whether you turn left or right. For a more traditional approach to romantic gift giving, candy and flowers are always an option with Morrison’s Flowers and Gifts on Jamestown Road and candy shops like Kilwins Chocolates and Wythe Candy and Gourmet Shop near Merchants Square. Morrison’s prepares for the Feb. 14 holiday by ordering many more bouquets of those iconic red roses, enough so those last-minute gift buyers still have some options. For jewelry lovers, the Precious Gem in Merchants Square has a wide selection and for something a little more unique, head over to Quirks of Art on High Street.

local business profile

A local place to

play and learn By Troy Jefferson It started off as a teacher supply store, but after nearly three decades School Crossing has turned into a central location for lasting memories. After 27 years, School Crossing has added toy store for children to its role. “It’s kind of an evolution,” said, Sherry Phipps, co-owner. “Little ones have grown up and now they’re bringing their children.” 22

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

School Crossing is an interactive store that allows kids to play with toys before they buy them and offers everything from LEGOs to instructional books to board games. Most of what the store sells is toys, Phipps said. “Then at back to school time, we really beef up the teacher supply end of it.” It’s also not uncommon for School Crossing to host live animals like alpacas and pigs in the store for the children’s amusement.

Located near big retailers like T.J. Maxx and Target, Phipps said she values the intimate relationships she has formed over the years with customers, which might not be possible at a larger store. Bob Phipps, co-owner, can remember a parent walking by the store and even though the parent’s kids are adults now, the parent came in and reminisced with the Phipps. “It’s fun to be a part of the community with the big national chains you don’t really get that,”

Sherry Phipps said. “I’ll see something and say I know who that is perfect for. So I’ll buy it specifically to show to that one person.” School Crossing also gives back to the community through their teacher-of-the-month award. Each month, the community nominates and votes for a teacher of the month, who receives a gift certificate to the store. Annually, School Crossing holds a teacher open house where the store is fully stocked for teachers and offers giveaways totaling around $10,000, according to the Phipps. The Phippses want School Crossing to continue to be a place

of learning, laughter and lasting memories. “I want this to continue to be a place that brings families together,” Sherry Phipps said.

Consignment shopping a boon for savvy shoppers By Brandy Centolanza

At The Velvet Shoestring, located on Second Street in Williamsburg, you can find high-end furniture as well as lamps, rugs and other accesories for your home. Photos by Brandy Centolanza

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

Looking to part with your child’s old clothes or toys, or that dresser or shelf you no longer have use for? Why not give consigning a try? The Williamsburg area is home to a host of consignment shops that sell gently used products ranging from baby items to clothing and fashion accessories to furniture and home décor. Consigning is a great way to pass on household goods without trashing them all while making a small profit. Betty Stephans, co-owner of The Velvet Shoestring, a high-end furniture consignment store on Second Street, decided to open her shop more than a dozen years ago because she felt “people want to decorate without breaking the bank,” she says. “They want to decorate on a shoestring, which is how we got our name.”

The Velvet Shoestring carries furniture, lamps, rugs, and other accessories. “We make it very easy to consign,” Stephans says. “We are selective with our pieces, but if there is anything that is sellable, we will sell it for you. If you need to get rid of something you don’t need any more for whatever reason, whether it is downsizing, relocating, or you are just redecorating, we sell it for you, and you get half and we get half. It’s a win-win situation.” Classic Consignments also sells used furniture and other decorations and items for the home. “There is always a treasure and a bargain to be found,” says co-owner Michelle Olesko. “We like helping people who are trying to upgrade their house or décor, or are just trying to find that one special item. It is the ultimate recycle. In the past, a lot of this furniture or small items would have ended up in the landfill.” Consumers enjoy consignment shopping “because you are getting quality items at really reasonable prices,” Olesko points out. “The quality of furniture is not what it used to be years ago, and, if you do buy quality, it is very expensive now.” Meanwhile, Diane Webb, owner of the local franchise Merle Norman Cosmetics, consigns name brand handbags. She carries more than 7,000 bags and works with close to 2,000 consignors. “We have a simple method of keeping track of everyone’s bags, and there is no waiting,” Webb explains. “When a consignor’s bag sells, they can come in immediately and get paid. We also offer a competitive split. The consignor receives sixty percent of the sellout bag price. Buying consignment items is popular because everyone loves a bargain.” When shopping at consignment stores, there are some things

to keep in mind. The price as well as the condition of the merchandise should be considered. “Always look a piece over carefully and make sure that it is what you want,” Olesko says. “Most consignment stores do not take returns. We always try to point out any defects that we are aware of.” Adds Webb: “A savvy customer knows the general retail price

of an item so that bargains can be easily spotted. We always suggest to customers that they inspect items thoroughly since most consigned items are used.”

WHERE TO START? Williamsburg Magazine has a map and list of some better local consignment stores. Check it out on pages 49-52.

In addition to selling cosmetics, skin care products, wigs, and performing ear piercing, Merle Norman Cosmetics also consigns more than 7,000 name brand handbags. Photo by Brandy Centolanza

Positive results “Setting aside advertising money in my budget each month for The Williamsburg Magazine has been one of the best decisions I have made for my business. With the vast out reach of the Magazine, who could go wrong? The rates are fair and the staff support has been excellent. I enjoy hearing from a good portion of my customers, whether they are local folks or visitors, that they saw my ad and “I just had to find you.” The Williamsburg Magazine is a definite recommendation for those considering options for their business advertising.” -Kellee Smalley, owner Willow Grove Primitives

The sweet scent of tradition

By Troy Jefferson It’s February and love isn’t the only thing in the air. On Merchant Square, Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop’s sweet-

34

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

smelling aromas fill the air, too. Wythe’s opened its doors in 1961 and has been a must stop for tourists and locals looking to satisfy their sweet tooth ever since. Wythe’s has everything from

candy to gourmet food to honey and various sauces. “When I think of Wythe’s, tradition is the first thing that comes to mind,” said Terri Morgan, store manager. “Besides the food, the atmosphere, the gifts and the smell is ingrained in so many people’s mind.” Morgan said one of her closest friends, who is in his 60s, can remember riding his bike to Wythe’s after school and watching the employees make the candy from scratch. “Very little of the candy is made here anymore but a lot of

people have those life long memories,” Morgan said. Morgan said most of the candy comes from Europe and that she must plan almost five months in advance to ensure strong inventory. For Valentine’s Day, she said she began ordering candy in October. The shelves are constantly stocked and restocked with major candy brands like Ghirardelli but the shop also has unique made-toorder treats. The early planning and dealing with customers who fill the store to the brim can be a burden, but not for Morgan or the nearly 40 employees at Wythe. “The shop is full of character, not just candy and confections it’s also very full of tradition,” Morgan said. “We have the perfect gift for all holidays.” The shop has many specials including buy three chocolate bars and get the fourth free. For a complete list of specials for Valentine’s Day visit the shop’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ wythecandy/

things to do

Get creative

in Williamsburg By Heather Bridges Whether painter or potter, expert or amateur, Williamsburg offers a wealth of ways to tap into your creative side. No need to sign up for a class at Paint on Pottery on High Street. No need, even, to bring any supplies. “You can just walk in,” said owner Robin Wilder. Once inside, pick out a piece of pottery and paint it. Paint on Pottery takes care of the rest, glazing and firing the piece ‘til it’s ready for pick-up in a few days. Wilder said the studio also offers group options, like birthday parties, ladies nights or office parties, in addition to summer camps and private lessons. There are options beyond pottery, too, including canvas painting and glass fusing. From babies to Alzheimer’s patients, Paint on Pottery Too welcomes any age, any skill level. Wilder finds that people often surprise themselves. “We show them and give them techniques, and 38

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

they’re just so amazed with what their pieces turn out to be,” she said. Regardless of results, the artistic process offers its own reward. “I am not here to create professional artists,” said Beverly Burgdorf, artist-in-residence at Colonial Folk Art Studio and Gallery. Rather, it’s about the fun, the creating. Often, it becomes a form of therapy, Burgdorf said. “It’s the process and how you get there,” she said. At Colonial Folk Art, Burgdorf teaches classes “on demand” in hand-building ceramics and mixed media painting. She also offers lessons on the pottery wheel, of which the studio has two. What Burgdorf has found is that, after taking a class, students return to work at their own pace. This is possible through Colonial Folk Art’s open studio option. “You don’t have to take a class to work in our studio,” she said.

At Artfully Yours on Jamestown Road, budding artists can explore a range of programs and workshops, depending on the age-range, time-frame or medium desired. From an eight-week “Wee Warhols” session for tots, to a mosaic workshop for parents and children, to Paint Your Pet nights for adults, you’ll find creative options bursting from the Artfully Yours website. Though Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center’s education initiative has been on a hiatus, with the recent move to 110 Westover Ave., the gallery expects to re-launch art classes and workshops in early spring. Apryl Altman, artistic vice president, said the center hopes to offer classes for adults and children, with options for watercolor, drawing and possibly painting. Burgdorf said Colonial Folk Art will host the contemporary art center’s pottery classes. Another option is the popular “paint and sip” concept, offered in Williamsburg from two organizations: Wine and Design and the Art Bar Virginia. At Wine and Design, learning to paint becomes a social endeavor . The concept is relatively simple: sign up for a class, show up for a few hours, then sip your beverage and follow along as an instructor guides you towards a completed painting. Though alcohol isn’t allowed at public classes, you can BYOB to private events. Rather than offering classes or parties in a space of its own, Art Bar Virginia sets up for an evening in the desired location, whether a home, office or business, throwing a painting party of sorts. Though days and locations vary, some of the local spots that have hosted Art Bar Virginia include Alewerks Brewing Company and Pitchers Bar and Grill. Aromas Mermaid Book Store

More entertaining than a cup of joe By Wesley Wright Located adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg and the College of

William and Mary, Aromas is a popular place for visitors and locals to unwind. Aromas invites all comers to its monthly Open Mic nights, where musicians, poets, singers and more can come to run their work by a willing audience. The open mic nights are chance for local artists to not only show their face in the community, but also showcase their talent in a relaxed atmosphere. The coffee shop has live music each week throughout the year, and the open mic is one of several facets of that. So, whether you’re listening or performing, Aromas is worth checking out.

Francesco’s brings Sicily to your dining table By Brandy Centolanza For more than nine years, Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano in Lightfoot has been providing customers with genuine Italian dishes straight from the heart of Sicily. Chef Francesco Fiorello first started in the food industry at age 8, working at a small bakery in his native Sicily. Fiorello came to the United States at 15, arriving in Charlottesville. He later moved to Smithfield, and then finally to Williamsburg, where he opened Francesco’s in 2008 after working his way up the restaurant ladder. “It’s always been his vision to have his own 44

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017

restaurant,” says Fiorello’s wife, Jeniffer, who is coowner and co-operator of the restaurant. “He enjoys the fact that he can get up every day and make something ordinary extraordinary.” Fiorello and his wife actually met at an Italian restaurant in Richmond almost 20 years ago. The pair, who have three children, decided to open Francesco’s after they both lost their jobs. The restaurant’s signature dishes include Ravioli di Baronessa---ravioli pasta stuffed with jumbo lobster in a creamy pink Alfredo sauce and topped with shrimp and crab---and the Chef’s favorite, Pasta di Sovranita. “It means pasta of royalty,” explains Jeniffer

Fiorello. “Its sweet and savory flavor is unsurpassed with its chicken, bacon, sausage, sundried tomatoes, and garlic simmered in a creamy Marsala wine sauce and served over pasta. The flavors complement each other.” The chef prepares the bread for the sub rolls and dinner accompaniment using the same recipe from his first job at the Sicilian bakery. Jeniffer Fiorello credits the success of the restaurant to her husband’s roots. “For one, you are getting a first-generation chef from Sicily,” she says. “The restaurant has a European charm as if you were stepping back into time into Sicily. Francesco creates intense, aromatic, and succulent entrees that are impeccable to duplicate, and he does it with love, which you will find is always one of the ingredients.” Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano offers lunch and dinner specials as well as gluten-free pasta dishes for those with sensitivities and wheat pasta alternatives for those who may be more health conscious. Takeout and delivery options are available. “We have our Francesco’s Fare menu in the evenings, an array of weekly chef-created items such as our butternut squash ravioli or our chicken rollatini,” says Jeniffer Fiorello. “We also offer osso bucco occasionally during holidays.” Osso bucco is a popular veal or pork shank dish served with pasta. The small, intimate setting of the restaurant also

sets it apart. Locals enjoy visiting on a routine basis as well as tourists. “We have tourists who make us an annual stop during their visit here to Williamsburg,” Jeniffer Fiorello says. A dozen employees help run the establishment. Jeniffer Fiorello admits operating a restaurant can be “a very tough business,” but she and her husband do it because “of the people. Pleasing the people is what is most important to Francesco. Watching the first bite and seeing the satisfaction makes it all worthwhile. It’s customer satisfaction that drives us to excel.” Future goals for Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano include expanding the seating area and adding a bar. The Fiorellos also hope to provide more catering services. “We want to surpass your expectations,” says Jeniffer Fiorello. “Our motto is ‘May all who enter as guests leave as friends.’” WANT TO GO? Early American Craftsmanship on display at Antiques Forum By Brandy Centolanza Whether you are an antiques collector or antiques dealer, or simply a history enthusiast, you’ll find your fill at the 69th Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum, set for February 24-28. The event, the oldest of its kind in the country, will celebrate Early American Craftsmanship with lectures, demonstrations and optional field trips and workshops. Roughly 350 people from across the country are expected to attend. “We have people who come every year from California, and we even have people come from overseas,” said Dr. Janine Skerry, Senior Curator of Metals for the Colonial Williamsburg Founda-

tion and a member of the antiques forum committee for the past 20 years. “Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Every year, there is an emphasis on learning for those who are interested in history, for collectors, for museum curators and professionals, and for dealers. It’s a combination of scholarship and fellowship.” This year’s guest speakers at the antiques forum include June Lucas, director of research at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts; Lisa Minardi, a noted scholar on Pennsylvania-German culture; and Kentucky Art Historian Estill Curtis Pennington. In addition, curators from Colonial

Williamsburg will also present on various topics ranging from Two Nations Divided by a Common Craft: Silversmithing in Britain and America to The Swords of George Washington. By popular demand, this year’s forum will also include more field trips and workshops. There will be optional hands-on workshops with the Colonial Williamsburg collections as well as private tours of historic homes in the region. Cost for the Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum is $650. To register for the event, visit colonialwilliamsburg.org or call 1-800-603-0948.
