Even during a Leap Year, like 2016, February is still the shortest month of the year. Don’t let the month slip through your fingers – take hold of all Williamsburg has to offer, even in winter. Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year. Whether you’re looking to make an evening or a weekend of it, Williamsburg Magazine has a number of suggestions, from grabbing a bite to eat in Merchants Square to getting a massage at the Williamsburg Salt Spa. Chocolate pairs well with Valentine’s Day, but it’s also a treat any day of the year. Check out some tips from Colonial Williamsburg’s head pastry chef and the owners of Mad About Chocolate on creative ways to prepare, pair and enjoy the dessert. Speaking of pairings, this month, we explore the Williamsburg Winery and Silver Hand Meadery, uncovering the best foods to pair with beverages from these establishments – whether it’s a more classic wine or an innovative mead. February is Black History Month, and Williamsburg is packed with programming from Colonial Williamsburg, First Baptist Church, The College of William and Mary and more. Speakers, tours, performances and a number of events will illuminate the local story. Another piece of history unveils itself nearby in Norge. Here, the Norge Depot Museum celebrates a train station built near the turn of the century. The Museum also recently installed a 90-year-old Georgia Railroad caboose, the first train the depot has seen since it closed in 1969. Tom Trimble began his business around that time, opening The Trimble Collection in 1974. Since then, he has built his reputation as Williamsburg’s “Art Doctor,” restoring pieces of art to new life. At 73, Trimble remains driven by a singular passion for his business. And he’s not alone. This month, the magazine explores a growing local “Boomer” population seeking a retirement driven by passion and purpose, rather than leisure and relaxation. Artist Elizabeth Krome said even if she retired, she would still want to make pots. As owner of Quail Run Pottery, Krome thrives when she can spend her time creating beautiful, functional pieces of pottery. Lastly, be sure to check out some local cultural events, with an international flair. The Jewish Film Festival, Global Film Festival and Muscarelle Museum present an escape to other places through visual mediums.

Valentine’s Day

Whether you want to do something as simple as dinner, drinks, and dessert or go for something grander such as a couples’ massage, Williamsburg has plenty of options to make your Valentine’s Day a special one. “We love Valentine’s Day, mostly because we have a chance to meet a lot of new folks,” shares Adam Steely, owner and manager of Blue Talon Bistro on Prince George Street. Like most local restaurants, Blue Talon Bistro offers specials for the holiday. “Going out on Valentine’s Day has become such a big deal that we just try to make it a little less stressful,” says Steely. “We have fun, oldschool specials that a couple can share. We offer 10

some softer cocktails that are fun for folks that aren’t necessarily acclimated to more potent versions, and we generally try to put young couples at ease. For folks that aren’t in the ‘getting to know you’ phase, our atmosphere is fairly casual and relaxed, if that’s what they’re looking for.” You and your loved one can grab a bite to eat at Blue Talon Bistro, The Trellis Bar & Grill, or any of the other restaurants in Merchants Square, then go for a stroll along Duke of Gloucester Street or try ice skating in Colonial Williamsburg. Liberty’s Ice Pavilion is open through mid-February. Top off the evening with a sweet treat at any of the local cupcake, candy, or frozen yogurt establishments. Or, enjoy a glass or bottle of wine at Saude Creek Vineyards in New Kent.
Colonial Williamsburg has several activities planned for the entire Valentine’s Day weekend, including date night specials, a Sweethearts dinner, Valentine’s Day brunch, a couples’ massage, carriage rides and tasting classes highlighting bourbon and chocolate or champagne and chocolate. For couples who want to relax with a massage, other local spas also have special packages for Valentine’s Day. Elements Spa at Great Wolf Lodge has aromatherapy or therapeutic massages, as well as a Scooops Kids Spa, should your Valentine this year be a special little boy or girl. Williamsburg Salt Spa is another option. In addition to the salt cave, Williamsburg Salt Spa has flotation tanks and a massage room, where you can relax with a Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, or a hot salt rocks massage. “Our couples’ massages are always popular,” says Agnieszka Drygala, founder of the Williamsburg Salt Spa. “We offer something that is very unique and very different. It’s peaceful and relaxing, for sure.” Williamsburg also has several quaint bed & breakfasts if you want to slip away for the whole night with your Valentine. But you don’t necessarily need to break the bank for Valentine’s Day. “It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive,” Drygala states. “It’s just about spending quality time together.”

The recently opened Silver Hand Meadery and Williamsburg Winery bring an element of innovation to our city’s food culture that is worthy of celebration. Whether you’re visiting town or have lived here for years, now is a good time to attend a tasting, a chance to explore and imbibe.
a nineteenth century tobacco drying barn. It contributes to the rustic warmth of the room. The name “Silver Hand” is a reference for historical fiction fans. Owners Glenn and Sherri Lavender named their meadery after the novel The Silver Hand by Stephen Lawhead. The name is fitting, as Lawhead’s fantastic medieval world surely includes many flagons of mead. Mead is a drink made of fermented honey and water. Often, fruit and spices are added during fermentation to enhance the base mead. The flavor is sweet, clear and inviting. Honey is to mead as grapes are to wine, so each varietal of honey creates an equally unique variety of mead. The Lavenders educate customers with indepth honey tastings. A honey tasting at Silver Hand is patterned exactly like a wine tasting. Glenn or Sherri take you through honeys and discuss the flavor profiles, viscosities, and origins. Orange Blossom honey is fruity with a dark hint of tobacco while Star Thistle honey’s viscosity makes it feel like it will slip off of your tongue. Jars of honey are stacked in tidy pyramids down the bar and next to these are multicolored “flavor wheels.” In 2014, University of California Davis created The Honey Aroma

and Flavor Wheel. One glance at the wheel demonstrates the limitless array of possibilities: artichoke, saffron, cat pee, grass, burnt sugar, or lime. While some of these flavors might seem intimidating on their own, the complexity of a single honey profile allows for flavors like “locker room” to fade into the distance. Silver Hand released their first two meads in January 2016. Like wine, some are best served chilled and others at room temperature. Use these food pairings as inspiration for your next gathering. Virginia Moon Virginia Moon is a wonderful introduction to the world of mead. It allows the drinker to explore the origins of mead—particularly those created and served in Virginia. Virginia Moon is crafted from Virginia honey and pairs well with Virginia ham, Asian BBQ, pan-seared seafood, pizza and aged Cheddars. Dream by the Fire The base of Dream by the Fire is Virginia wildflower honey with additives of Virginia apples, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and molasses. The sweet spicy flavors of Dream by the Fire pair well with honey coat cured turkey, Gouda cheese, dried apples, roasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate, and ginger cookies.

The Williamsburg Winery The Williamsburg Winery is a stalwart tradition in Williamsburg and a wonderful reflection of the city’s character. As with the adage “what grows together pairs together,” the Williamsburg Winery is focusing on the principle of terroir with both their wines and restaurants. Terroir is the idea that simply by tasting the wine, you can detect the setting in which the grapes were harvested and the method by which the wine was made. In that vein, winemaker Matthew Meyer and Marketing Manager Michael Kimball paired two wines with foods from regional farms whose products are as finely crafted and intricate in flavor as the Williamsburg Winery’s wines.

2014 Acte 12 Chardonnay and Big Island Aquaculture Oysters Acte 12 is a traditional Chardonnay named for the first winerelated law issued by the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1619. A complex aging process resulted in rich layers of flavor: the initial tropical notes give way to peach, apricot, and plum with a nutty vanilla finish. Pair this wine with a dish of raw oysters from Big Island Aquaculture in Gloucester. The clean, salty flavor of their oysters creates a wonderful balance with WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2016

the buttery nature of the oysters and the crisp minerality of the Acte 12. 2013 Adagio and Border Springs Farm Lamb In layman’s terms, the WIlliamsburg Winery’s Adagio is the vintage’s boldest varietals rolled into one red wine. The 2013 Adagio is composed of
72% Petit Verdot, 14% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc. The Trimble Collection: Home to Williamsburg’s ‘Art Doctor’ By Heather Bridges
The painting, a family portrait, was more than 150 years old. It was frameless, tattered, rotting. Some might’ve thought the restorative process impossible. But not Tom Trimble. For him, it was a challenge. In a painstaking process, Trimble pieced the painting together and restored it to life. By the 20

time he finished, the painting appeared new. He added a custom-frame and delivered the piece to the customer. Another challenge solved. “That’s what’s fun about this business,” Trimble said. “It’s always unique. It’s always surprising.” Trimble has built his reputation as the “Art Doctor” since establishing The Trimble Collection in 1974.
Housing an art gallery, framing and restoration business, the Trimble Collection is many things. But in this case, quantity doesn’t minimize quality. Trimble abides by a certain philosophy – a philosophy pervading every element of the Trimble Collection: “I won’t let anything go out of here unless the quality is as good as I would put in my own home,” he said. The nearly 350 pieces of art displayed in the gallery echo the style and quality he would display in his own living space, Trimble said. Ranging from realism to impressionism, the gallery includes European, Asian and American artists. Trimble loves art and, especially, artistic craftsmanship. “I want pictures to talk to me, speak to me,” he said. And when framing, Trimble listens to what the art is saying. He selects, constructs and restores frames to enhance art. Trimble also revives pieces of art with hand-painted French and Empire mattes. The detailed touches go a long way, providing customers with pieces “unique and distinct and different than anything else around,” Trimble said. Though Trimble’s career originally followed a path into science education, art ran in the family – his brother was an artist, and Trimble’s dad possessed drawing talent. “I’ve always been a student at heart,” Trimble said. It allowed him to thrive through the career switch. It continually drives him today. “I’m always trying to do better,” he said. “I will never, ever cut corners.” No matter the challenge. Plenty of challenges come through door, especially in terms of restoration. No two days are the same, Trimble said. Whether the art is damaged by a wayward football, a house fire, age, you name it, Trimble isn’t fazed. This work is his passion. In 45 years, he has only taken three vacations. Even if he won the lottery, Trimble said he’d only take a few days off. “I’m hoping to retire in 27 more years,” said the 73-year-old. “I can’t think of anything in the world I would rather do.” “It’s so much fun.”

building set to be demolished until the association, spearheaded by a local woman named Francis Hamilton, worked to have it moved next door to the Williamsburg Regional Library on Croaker Road in 2006, said association President Chris Hamilton. Now the depot is a free educational museum shaped around the railroad and Norge’s history, Hamilton said. The new Norge Depot is built with the same walls as the original building, although rooms have been converted to showcase artifacts, Hamilton said. The old freight room was turned into a public meeting room that people can rent through the library. Another room features original post office boxes from a time when trains would roll through the station with mail, Hamilton said. A space that once served as the waiting room for African American passengers now showcases artifacts including a telegraph that can tap out Morse code, antique phones, original train schedules and freight that was shipped to the Norge Depot, Hamilton said. In the old Caucasian waiting room people can watch a model railroad – built by the Ford’s Colony Model Railroad Club – roll around the tracks. The club plans to build towns around the railroad that will represent surrounding areas like Norge, Toano and Providence Forge, Hamilton said. A red, 90-year-old Georgia Railroad caboose was moved in front of the museum on Dec. 11. Although the caboose still needs to be refurbished, it is the realization of the association’s 9-year dream to have one greeting visitors before they enter the museum, Hamilton said. The Norge Depot is located at 7770 Croaker Road, Williamsburg. It is free and open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. To learn more, visit norgedepot.org.

Elizabeth Krome: A passion for pottery By Heather Bridges

“This is pretty blissful,” Elizabeth Krome said, seated at her potter’s wheel. Bathed in natural light, she gazed out the window of her studio into a wooded backyard. Then, wheel set in motion, Krome began throwing a pot. Molding, guiding the clay with experienced hands. Creating. Sometimes, while seated at the wheel, she’ll think, “Am I really getting away with this?” For though pottery is Krome’s livelihood, it’s also her passion. The craft is hard work and long hours, but it’s her great love. “If I retired, I would just want to make pots,” she said. For now, Krome shows no signs of slowing down as art-

ist, teacher and owner of Quail Run Pottery in Toano, Va. She started as a crafter of words. Krome graduated college with experience in journalism. She was working at the Harvard College Observatory, editing astrophysics manuscripts, when she took her first pottery class. It would soon lead to her career change. “It was a big turnaround,” Krome said. “Not what I expected out of my life.” But she wouldn’t change a thing. “I’ve loved words, but I love clay more,” Krome said, laughing. She’s been making pots for a living since 1975 and doing so in Toano since 2003. In addition to maintaining Quail Run Pottery and participating in regional art shows, Krome teaches classes at the James City County Recreation Center. She began teaching pottery in 1975. “It continues to be one of my biggest satisfactions,” she said. Krome loves interacting with the students, seeing them “learn to find their own voice in clay.”

Krome said a voice accumulates through decisions about clay, glazes, hand movements – hundreds of decisions. Though Krome’s signature is etched across the bottom of her pieces, her work would be recognizable regardless. Her voice resonates. Simplicity is key. Krome focuses on craftsmanship and, especially, functionality. She desires her pots to be used. Still, “I want them to be beautiful. I want them to be graceful,” she said. Krome fires clay at around 2,400 degrees in a reduction kiln just outside her studio. She creates both porcelain and stoneware items, including dinnerware, vases,
mugs, teapots and more. Prices generally range from $25 to $75. She also crafts a range of custom orders. “I want to make those things that become your favorite objects,” Krome said. Why Boomers hate the word ‘retirement’ And why that could be good for Williamsburg. By C. Michael Johnson As I listen to the passion and energy coming from the “retired” gentleman sitting across from me at a local coffee shop, I could just as well be talking to a 20-year old. He tells me how he and his wife moved from the northeast, drawn to Williamsburg by all the obvious amenities (golf, history, the arts, and small town feel). But now they are sensing the need to dig deeper into themselves and the community to pursue the passions that really drive them. He loves the leisure options and relaxed pace people associate with living here, but recently they embarked on more meaningful pursuits and some of the unfinished dreams they never had time for, until now. But he also found they were not alone.
The soul of a generation Every day in America 10,000 people turn 65, and as a whole, this group will grow 78% over the next decade compared to 18% for the general population. But this numerical boom is characterized by an ex-
plosion of purpose. Author Marc Freedman says it’s about the “reintegration of wisdom and experience aligned with purpose.” It can “look like a hobby turned into a business or starting a social enterprise to solve a problem while earning an income. It could mean volunteering for a nonprofit or part-time work in a business. Millions of people between the ages of 50 and 70 say they are looking for a new work/life model that combines personal meaning, some element of work and social impact.” Dr. Joseph Umidi, Regent University Dean, and founder of Lifeforming Leadership Coaching says it this way: “The 60’s changed everything and those who lived it were forever ‘ruined’ for any ordinary definition of retirement. The generation in search of a cause is now moving to activate matured purpose and passion with a renewed focus. Now is their time to live a bigger dream in the bigger game of life.”
Communities of purpose According to Ann Bowe, Executive Director of Heritage Commons, “Boomer residents are helping to shape the creative changes currently taking place in senior living communities in Williamsburg and around the country. And that’s a good thing.” Boomers, who don’t wish to be labeled as “seniors” or “retired” are nevertheless driving the transformation of both senior living design and programs that connect communities with the larger community. Churches across the country have also noticed the striking difference between Boomers and older seniors and are in the process of reinventing what an emerging senior ministry should look like. Bobby Farino, a local pastor with Encore Church, focuses on the motivations driving this trend, “At its core, this Boomer search is largely a spiritual drive for greater meaning and purpose. Some describe

it as renewed sense of calling. We have an enormous opportunity to come alongside Boomers and their dreams and together write a new chapter for our community.” As humans, we all have a deep need to feel as though our lives mean something. Research has identified a cluster of interests among Boomers: Deep conversation and purposeful collaboration, refocused learning, intergenerational mentoring, creativity and the arts, children, grandchildren, and creating a legacy. But the thread that seems to run through it all is purpose. As we begin to understand needs and desires of the Boomer generation and how they are recasting the image and substance of retirement, it could spark a very interesting conversation for our community. We have an incredible opportunity to build the networks and support systems that tap into this talent and experience to benefit our community in profound ways. With an abundance of local educa-
tional, entrepreneurial, spiritual, and social impact offerings growing in the region, could Williamsburg be poised to become a Boomer center of a different kind, a community that empowers Boomer's soulquest for a purpose-driven adventure? Who knows, maybe amidst the generation that grew up wanting to change the world with their dreams, Williamsburg could spark some revolutionary spirit among a brand new group of history makers. And that would be good for all of us.

the abolition of slavery to the 90s, according to a press release from the foundation. The exhibit features 12 quilts, six of which have never been exhibited. Some of the quilts are inspired by African heritage, while others are based on Anglo-American techniques, according to the press release. Included in the exhibit is a log cabin quilt top, estimated to have
been made in St. Louis between 1875 and 1900 by a former slave named Anna Jane Parker. Another quilt was made in 1970 by Indiana Bendolph Pettway, a woman raised in poverty in Gee’s Bend, Ala., according to the release. The exhibit opened Jan. 30, 2016 and will remain open until Jan. 2, 2018 at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Colonial Wil-

Jewish Film Festival Presented by Temple Beth El of Williamsburg, the 15th annual Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival kicked off with two international films in November. Hiroshige Exhibit A famed Japanese artist, Ando Hiroshige worked specifically in the style of ukiyo-e. This Japanese art form flourished in the Edo Period (1615-1868), approximately translating to “pictures of the floating world.” The Muscarelle Museum of Art presents “Hiroshige’s Tokaido,” an exhibit opening this month with nearly 250 woodblock prints of the Tokaido road. Following the eastern coastline of Japan, Tokaido was the most important and traveled of the “Five Roads” of the Edo Period. Hiroshige’s works encapsulate the road’s culture, beauty and history. The exhibit, opening Feb. 4, presents five complete sets of Hiroshige’s “The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road.” Another exhibit will run simultaneously at the Muscarelle – “Light Works: A Century of Photography.” This exhibit spans the evolution of photography throughout the twentieth century, with iconic photographs from Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Curtis, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus and many others. It’s a traveling exhibit, organized by the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts, but the Muscarelle will incorporate images from its own permanent collection, as well as loans from private collectors. The Muscarelle Museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., TuesdayFriday, and noon-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at 603 Jamestown Road.

Chocolate can be as simple – or as complex – as you’d like By Brandy Centolanza
Chocolate ganache. Chocolate torte. Chocolate truffle. There are a variety of ways you can enjoy this fabulous dessert with your loved ones on Valentine’s Day or any time of the year. Rodney Diehl, head pastry chef at Colonial Williamsburg, prefers dark chocolate when preparing desserts for the restaurants at Williamsburg Lodge or Williamsburg Inn. “It just gives it a richer taste,” he says. “It’s not as overpowering with the milk, sugar, or other additives.” Chocolate that has at least 65 to 70 percent cocoa works best. There are simple ways to prepare chocolate at home for your tasting pleasure. Diehl likes to make ganache, a whipped filling of chocolate and cream used in chocolate desserts, or tortes, which are creamy, flourless cakes. You can also melt chocolate in a pan with a little cream to make a fondue and dip in strawberries or cherries. “Chocolate can be very sensuous,” shares Connie Desaulniers, who owns Mad about Chocolate with her husband, Marcel. Marcel is the man behind the famous dessert Death by Chocolate. At Mad About Chocolate, the couple enjoys experimenting with chocolate and coming up with various sweet treats for the holidays. In addition to the traditional chocolatecovered strawberries, “Figs are also excellent for dipping,” Desaulniers says. “Truffles are wonderful because of the texture and can be easily made at home.” A truffle is a soft chocolate candy filled with more chocolate, usually ganache.
Other fruits that can be dipped in chocolate include pomegranates, bananas, pineapples, grapes, pears, and oranges. You can also pair chocolate fondue with marshmallows, pretzels, nuts, cream puffs, biscotti, Angel Food Cake, pound cake, or sponge cake. Whether you choose to make chocolate mousse, pops, cookies, or cupcakes, there are extras you can mix in with your chocolate for additional flavor. These include caramel, honey, mocha, peanut butter, cinnamon, ginger, licorice, rum, or brandy. “You can also make a candy cup with melted chocolate with different dried fruits that looks really pretty,” Desaulniers suggests. “We have something called tutti frutti we make with dried cranberries.” Chocolate also goes well with champagne, sparkling wine, and port wine, especially at Valentine’s Day. No matter how you decide to indulge in chocolate, the important thing is to share it with someone you love.

But as he was traveling through the South, he discovered that one of his slaves, Hercules, who he had left in the nation’s capital might be scheming to obtain freedom. Secret Keepers: Literacy, Slavery and the Law Letters of protest or conspiracies written by enslaved and free blacks were kept secret as they passed from one hand to another. Rare 18th century letters reveal their aspirations for freedom. Some slaves were “secrete keepers” who used literacy to change their condition.
