MARCH 2011

For the local community and visitors to Williamsburg, Virginia

Members of the 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment pose with friends from other units during a recent Military Through the Ages event.

Civil War integral to Military Through the Ages By Bob Ruegsegger or almost three decades [28 years], Jamestown Settlement has continuously attracted hordes of museum visitors to the annual Military Through the Ages program. Civil War re-enactors have been an integral part of the event from the very beginning. Over the years, Civil War re-enactment units, Confederate and Union, have been among the most authentic and popular living history groups involved with the program. “The first year I was with the 1st Texas. Later, we portrayed the 53rd Virginia. I was involved with the museum education business back then with Colonial Williamsburg,” recalls Todd Johnson. “There were quite a few of us. I would say that the

F

majority of the folks in both of those units were people who were involved in the museum education field at either the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation or Colonial Williamsburg.” Members of the 53rd Virginia were interested in the Military Through the Ages because it was an early spring event that gave re-enactors an opportunity to get their muskets and uniforms out, dust off the cobwebs, and get ready for the re-enactment season. “People always thought of the spring and the summer months as the re-enacting season,” recalls Steve Martin who re-enacted with the 53rd Virginia. “It was when all the major events were, and MTA gave them an opportunity to get back into the swing of things.” Half of the twelve re-enact-

Merchants Square Merchants Square, the shopping area in Colonial Williamsburg, is home to 42 businesses, including clothing stores, toy shops and restaurants. The majority of the businesses are privately owned and sell unique items. This gives the shopping experience a more personal touch, said Director of Commercial Properties Marina Ashton. “They offer quality merchandise and friendly and knowledgeable staffs,” she said. Janet Lane-Roberts, owner of Ocean Palm, said she chose to open her clothing store in Merchants Square because she gets the chance to meet interesting people from many different places. “You see all different walks of life,” she said. The brick roads, 100-year-old sycamore trees and colonial-style buildings make Merchants Square a beautifully unique place to stroll and meet friends.

Shop the Carousel for your Easter outfits. • Sweet selection of Brother/Sister clothing. • Swimsuits are here for your Spring Break Vacation.

“It’s so historic and beautiful,” said Ashton. “It’s nice to just come and sit on a bench.” On Saturdays, shoppers can purchase fresh produce and baked goods at the farmer’s market, which has been a part of Merchants Square for eight years. The area also hosts community events, including its summer concert series, Summer Breeze. “We are trying to appeal to different age groups,” Ashton said. “This year we are going to have a Jimmy Buffett-type band.” Merchants Square was constructed in the 1920s and was one of the first planned shopping areas in the United States. King’s Treasure, a gift and souvenir shop owned by Sam Wallace Jr., is its oldest tenant and has been there since 1919.

The Kimball Theatre The Kimball Theatre has earned the right to be called a hometown theater. It first opened in January 1933 and is the longest operating theater in Williamsburg. “All the locals grew up with The Kimball Theatre,” said Program Manager Clay Riley. The 410-seat theater is a multi-purpose venue that specializes in independent and foreign films, lectures, musical performances and plays. Originally called the Williamsburg Theatre, the venue received a makeover and a new name in 2000. Among the additions was a 35-seat screening room, allowing the theater to show films every day, according to the Colonial Williamsburg Web site. The theater has seen its share of memorable performances over the

decades. In the last three years, the theater hosted big names such as John Hiatt and Mickey Rooney. Beginning Feb. 17, the theater will team with The College of William & Mary to present the Global Film Festival, Riley said. It is a free, four-day event showcasing films dealing in the supernatural and the environment. Last year, more than one thousand people participated, he said. “We’re trying to get it a little bit bigger each year,” he said. Along with annual festivals, the theater also hosts weekly specials. On Monday nights, patrons with Good Neighbor passes can see movies for $5 and receive a free fountain drink and popcorn. The same special is open to students with a valid ID on Tuesday nights.

4 The Gazette Extra March 2011 thirds of the Civil War battles were fought in Virginia. The Civil War has long been near and dear to the hearts of Virginians. Many local re-enactors claim ancestors who fought in the conflict. “There’s a tremendous amount of history all around us. Not only right next door to us at Historic Jamestowne but up and down the James River. Richmond being the capital of the Confederacy,” explains Lanier. Also known as the Amelia Rifles, the 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment has been among the outstanding Civil War re-enactment organizations that have been involved with MTA from the very beginning. “The 23rd Virginia stands out because they are a great bunch of people who are absolutely squared away on their history and their drill,” offers Lanier. “If you want a history lesson, you want to see these folks. They are a class act. The commanders have changed over the years. Bill Reagan commands the unit now.” At MTA this year, the 23rd Virginia will be portraying the Brooklyn Grays at Camp Lee, Virginia in May, 1861. The Brooklyn Grays, Company E of

the 23rd Virginia, enlisted on May 7, 1861 at Brooklyn, Halifax County, Virginia. Captain William Haynes was the company commander. On the demonstration field, Company E, 23rd Virginia will be demonstrating the School of the Company from Gilham’s Manual for Volunteers and Militia. The manual was written by Major William Gilham, instructor of tactics and commandant of the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute, and published in 1861. Members of the unit will also be performing a variety of fatigue and guard details in camp as well as exhibiting uniforms, weapons, and accouterments to the public. “One of the most top notch units I’ve ever seen is the 3rd U.S. Infantry. If we need them to do something extra, they’ll do it,” observes Lanier. “Whenever the 3rd U.S. is with us, they always get a game of rounders going with the Southern forces. They’ll have a game of baseball. When that spontaneously happens, it’s one of my favorite things.” This year, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, the 3rd U.S. Regular Infantry, The Old

Guard, will be outfitted in full U.S. Army regulation uniforms of frockcoats, Hardee hats, shoulder scales, and dark blue trousers. Members of the 3rd U.S. will active invite visitors to participate in drill and camp activities. Wooden muskets will be furnished for spectators who wish to participate in early war company musket drill. Visitors will be offered a closely supervised opportunity to experience bayonet drill using a hanging hay bale as a target. The unit will also offer an extensive Civil War medical display hosted by a surgeon and hospital steward. The Tidewater Maritime Living History Association will be offering a look at the U.S. Navy during the early war. They will be depicting the crew of the USS Aroostook in 1862. USS Aroostook, a steamer acquired by the Union Navy, was employed as a gunboat to patrol Confederate waterways. In June of 1862, the USS Aroostook destroyed guns, ordnance, and equipment abandoned by the Confederates at Jamestown. Navigation, small arms, and seamanship will be among this unit’s featured demonstrations. The duties of the ship’s chaplin, paymaster, and marines will also be topics of discussion.

The Nancy Hart Militia will depict an all-female Civil War era militia unit that was originally formed in LaGrange, Georgia. Named for Revolutionary War heroine Nancy Morgan Hart, the militia company was organized by Nancy Hill Morgan and Mary Alford Heard to protect the Town of LaGrange from the Union Army. They mustered twice a week for drill and target practice. Prizes were awarded for the best marksmanship. Unit demonstrations will include basic drill, cooking with period recipes, and nursing duties. Re-enactment units who are asked to participate in Military Through the Ages compete with their peers for blue ribbons. Top honors include awards for best camp, best field demonstration, best cooking, and best uniforms. “We invite folks to submit their qualifications for being here at the event with us. We’ve always tried to be selective about who we have come. We want the best educational opportunity for our visitors,” explains Lanier. “Our Civil War units, the 3rd U.S. and 23rd Virginia, win awards regularly. Quite often they’ll take the award for the best tactical demonstration on the demo field.”

Re-enactors with the 3rd U.S. Regular Infantry have provided instruction in the use of the bayonet in a strictly controlled environment.
