Welcome 2015 Can you believe it is already a new year, and 15 years into our new century? This year opens with a lot of promise for a great and productive year for our area businesses and attractions. Each year, the Virginia holds its ‘Best of Williamsburg’ contest. It has changed over the years, and now thousands of votes are tallied online to determine the finest in a particular category. This issue lists of winners in categories ranging from food to services. If you are visiting one of the winning businesses, tell them ‘Congratulations!’ Our Local Spin features European Cars of Williamsburg on Rochambeau Drive. The business is family-owned and provides a place for top-notch service on European cars as well as the chance to purchase some unique automobiles. Our Women in Business feature highlights Artfully Yours on Richmond Road, which, since it opened has been steadily gaining popularity for its fun atmosphere and distinct items. Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? If you are like most Americans, you likely did. And also, like most Americans you may break them before the end of 2015. There are many ways people set goals for themselves in a New Year, including, quitting smoking, losing weight or making another improvement to themselves. There are many places around town offering people with a chance to look and feel their best. Looking for a Great Find? Then look no further than our D.A.V. Thrift Store on Merrimac Trail. The D.A.V. store offers thousands of items at reasonable prices ranging from clothing to electronics, jewelry to housewares. It is all for a great cause. I hope that you and yours have a great 2015 and that it is one of renewed optimism and all good things.

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? Well if you do, you aren’t alone. Most Americans try to make positive changes at the beginning of each year. Trouble is, most don’t stick to them. According to USA.gov, these are the most popular New Year’s Resolutions. Locally, there are many places that can help people achieve their goals, whether it be to tone up or to pursue more education. 1. Lose weight—Our area offers a variety of weight loss centers and programs that can help people shed a few or more pounds. 2. Volunteer to help others—Area nonprofit organizations, performing arts groups and religious groups are always looking for people to help them in their mission. 3. Quit smoking—Area healthcare companies offer programs to help people kick the habit. The American Cancer Society also offers people with online help to quit. 4. Get a better education—Thomas Nelson Community College can help people get a degree in various fields. You are never too old to go back to school. The College of William and Mary also is a top-rate option for furthering education. 5. Get a better job—There are several online companies that will send daily job postings right to your phone or tablet. Search and sign up.

6. Save money—Area financial advisors, banks and credit unions can provide those who are looking to save money make better choices. It is never too late to start saving. 7. Get fit—Walking, running, bicycling, yoga and aerobic exercise are just some of the ways people can get fit. Our area offers wonderful places to enjoy the outdoors. 8. Eat healthy food—Area stores can offer fresh produce and other items that can make a difference in health. Try the Williamsburg Farmers Market or Yorktown Market Days for fresh, healthy produce. 9. Manage stress—Exercise can play a key role. Laughter and entertainment can help too. 10. what’s cooking?

Chef Baki Oncu, Olde Towne Pizza & Pasta %\ $QQ 0 (ÀPHW]

When Baki Oncu came to the U.S. from Turkey he landed a job in the kitchen of Sal’s Italian Restaurant. He learned under the mentorship of Victor Minichiello and soon learned about the fine art of creating Italian dishes. “I discovered that I liked cooking,” Oncu said in a recent interview. “It was hard and it required long hours but I cooked and people liked it. It made me more excited to learn more about it.” He and his wife, Tatiana, opened Olde Towne Pizza and Pasta on Olde Towne Road near Premium Outlets nearly eight years ago. Since, he has been exercising his culinary expertise in the kitchen, creating dishes ranging from pizza to Northern Italian selections. “I knew that opening the restaurant wouldn’t be easy,” he said. “But word-of-mouth has been bringing people in. I believe in quality food, large portions and fresh salads. We charge a reasonable price. People come here, and they tell their friends and they come back with more people.” Oncu admits he seldom has time away from work to cook at home. He is usually at the restaurant with Tatiana and his staff, working to make the restaurant distinct. Over the years, the menu has diversified. Now along with pizza, people can order Grilled Chicken Alla Vodka, Veal Piccata, or Mussels Marinara. “I cook in a classic way and I never change the way that I believe about food,” he said. “My menu is all classic, Italian food.” One of the more popular dishes on the menu was discovered by happenstance one evening in

the kitchen, long after the restaurant had closed. Seems a friend stopped by the restaurant to visit and the two men chatted long after closing, enjoying wine and camaraderie. That’s when Ocnu’s friend expressed an interest in getting something to eat. “We were hungry,” he laughed. “So we went into the kitchen and I put one of my breaded chicken cutlets in the oven with cheese and tomatoes and my own Balsamic vinegar.” The result was a new taste sensation. “Something came out of the blue that night, “he admitted. “I now call it Chicken Baki. It is simple but people love it.” Ocnu listens to his customers and tries to incorporate their requests into the menu. He recently began offering steamed vegetables for a healthier side choice. The restaurant also offers gluten free pizza, and he hopes to continue offering other gluten-free choices. Salads are prepared fresh on site and include romaine, red onion, tomatoes, olives, carrots and cucumbers. All dressing, except Caesar is made in the kitchen. “The salads are very colorful and full of nutrients,” he said. “And using fresh dressing makes a big difference.” Ocnu works hard to make sure the restaurant is clean and the menu offers the finest choices. He hopes that combination will continue bringing in new customers as well as satisfying regulars. “We try to make it as nice as we can,” he said. “We try to make what we do even better.”

women in business

Artfully Yours Chelsea White %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

How long has the store/gallery been in business? Artfully Yours opened its door on April 12, 2014. What kinds of things do you carry? Work by local artists and craftsman—including candles, jewelry, pottery and baby items. We also have a small selection of Americanmade kids craft kits and we carry Ecofriendly art supplies. What is it that you enjoy most about being a business owner? We feel such a sense of community. I love chitchatting with the folks who wander in and I am proud of all the work we have put into the space and into the community already. When we first opened the business it was based upon some money left by my late grandfather and I know he would really be happy with what we have done so far. What has surprised you about the response to the shop since it opened? The community loves the shop. It has taken some time to get the word out about Artfully Yours, but thanks to friends, family, the artists and our great customer base it is finally happening. What do you think it takes to be a small business owner? Determination, perseverance and patience. It also takes a positive attitude when things aren’t going your way, a tough shoulder when you see other businesses being overly competitive with you rather than working together, a friendly face/smile/personality and the ability to operate on no sleep. 3KRWRV E\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

Anything else? It also takes a team of amazing people who all have the same passions and goals as you. Artfully Yours would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for everyone involved. We have developed things that haven’t taken off, so we are constantly evolving and switching things up—being flexible is definitely a must.

What plans do you have to expand the store or inventory? We are working on finishing the Kid’s Art Discovery Center which will act much like a children’s museum. It will involve the dramatic arts, music arts, visual arts and a little bit of tinkering and sensory play thrown in, too. We are also adding new art classes for kids and adults. What do you hope to be doing 5 years from now? 10? Expanding! We hope to one day have an old school bus or vintage trailer that would be an art school on wheels, where we can go to events and in the schools to bring art to the community for free. We also want to host art retreats at some point. We would also like to have an outdoor art space adorned with sculptures and outside art. I would love to see a lunch time art lecture series. Our focus is community and art and seeing the two marry and at some point soon we are looking into becoming a non-profit. Our plans for the next few years are really exciting and a bit overwhelming at the same time, we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

If you are looking for a car that makes a statement, you may find just what you seek at European Cars of Williamsburg on Rochambeau Drive. Now in its 11th year, the business, owned by Konstantin “Gus” Fotiadis, has been providing sales and service for a variety of makes of European cars including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Mini, Volkswagen, Volvo, Porche and Jaguar. “It is a dream business for my father,” said Helen Fotiadis. “This is his baby. himself, with my mom (Marina.)” Gus Fotiadis has been living in the area since 1972. He emigrated here with his mother from Greece when he was 12. He attended Denbigh High and graduated from the Automotive Training Institute of Virginia Beach. His first local repair shop was G&N Performance on Route 60, now known as Impact Automotive and Carquest of Williamsburg Auto Parts. He also briefly owned Colonial Amoco. He received extensive training on European cars while in Greece during the mid-1990s. When he returned, he opened the business on Rochambeau. The showroom features a variety of cars and offers those looking for a certain make and year with a variety of options. “We carry more of a boutique-style inventory,” Helen Fotiadis said. “They are nice cars with low mileage and hard to find cars. We appeal to the person who needs a good reliable everyday car, but we also look for the cream puffs that are in great condition that are harder to find. “ Fotiadis said a recent 1991 BMW M3 convertible with only 45,000 miles on it sold to a very happy buyer.

Gloucester-Mathews First Night Humane Society appoints new executive director

2015

The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society recently announced the appointment of Nichola Redmond as its executive director. She succeeds Betsy Henderson, who left the position in May. Redmond is coming to the GMHS from New Jersey where for the past 13 years she has been the executive director of Mane Stream, Inc. a non-profit organization that provides equine assisted activities, therapy and education to individuals with physical, developmental, emotional and medical challenges. “The GMHS Board of Directors has undertaken a six-month long evaluation of the Society’s needs, and a far reaching search for a new ED, a process which resulted in more than 70 applicants from as far away as Florida and California,” said Dr. Richard Crowder, board president. “Nichola’s wealth of experience and success in animal welfare uniquely qualify her to fill our

executive director role. There isn’t a position at an animal shelter that she hasn’t worked,” added Crowder. “She’s done everything from cleaning cages and runs to being a vet tech on up the management chain, and we are excited that she will become a part of the GMHS family.” Redmond says she knows how much can be accomplished by an organization with “a well planned strategy that employs a variety of approaches such as best practices for animal care and placement, education, and providing support by acting as a resource for both the community and adopters. Being such a resource for the community not only helps animals but also engages the community in the process of accomplishing the organization’s mission through financial and other support, which ultimately sustains the organization into the future.”

For more than two decades, First Night of Williamsburg has been entertaining locals and visitors with a family-oriented, non-alcoholic New Year’s Eve celebration of the performing arts presented throughout the City of Williamsburg and on the campus of the College of William and Mary. Some 4000-5000 people are expected to converge on the area on Dec. 31 to see favorite acts and several new. There is a lot of variety this year including, Bluegrass, blues, jazz, classic rock, folk, gospel, Celtic, classical, swing, pop, soul, magic, acrobats and cloggers. The performances will be held in venues across town. Returning favorites include Ronny Cox, Jae Sinnett, Three Jolly Coachmen, Peanut City Cloggers, Bobby Blackhat Blues band, Soundworks Acapella group, Williamsburg Classic Swing Orchestra and the The Main Event Band. It takes all year to plan the event. Some 350 volunteers take part and are integral to the event’s success. Children’s activities begin early at Matthew Whaley School and wrap with fireworks at 7:15. Sometimes the best finds are discovered at thrift stores. The D.A.V. Thrift Store on Merrimac Trail offers thousands of new items every day. There are great finds galore. And the proceeds generated from store sales provide funding for 13 local D.A.V. chapters. “We get thousands of items every day and thousands go out on the floor every day,” said Mike Long of the local D.A.V. Thrift Store. “We have a mark down system and nothing stays on the floor more than three or four weeks.

There are always fresh products coming to the floor.” Long said the appeal for people is to find something special at reasonable price. “For some people it is like a treasure hunt,” he said. Additionally, the store provides needed clothing, furniture and home items at discount prices. “We are satisfying the need in the community for those who may have a limited amount of money to spend,” he said. The hours of the store are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, Sunday noon-5 p.m.
