When the weather turns cold, the warmth of the indoors beckons. While it’s tempting to grab a blanket and hibernate, there’s plenty in Williamsburg to explore indoors. The local craft beverage scene has burgeoned, packing a surprising amount of variety into the area. What started in 2006 with Alewerks Brewing Company has grown to include Virginia Beer Company and Brass Cannon Brewing, all boasting unique brews but united in the pursuit of quality beer. Beyond beer, Williamsburg Distillery and Copper Fox Distillery offer a taste of locally produced spirits. And don’t forget about Silver Hand Meadery with its modern take on a historic drink. These beverages, and the award-winning wines of Williamsburg Winery, are all part of the Williamsburg Tasting Trail, as it’s now called. You can hit several of these locations in one trip thanks to Drink Williamsburg, a recently opened business with bus tours of the Tasting Trail. While craft beverages certainly add to a feeling of warmth, they aren’t the only option in winter. There’s Williamsburg’s Room Escape, presenting a few fun takes on that “escape room” experience that has been on the rise. But if the outdoors beckons, there are always opportunities to explore the outdoors, and you’ll find a few ideas in this issue too.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum

celebrates 60th

anniversary By Heather Bridges The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum first opened in 1957, centered around a collection of a few hundred objects given by the museum’s namesake to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Sixty years later, the museum’s collection has grown to more than 5,000, and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s vision lives on. This month, pieces from the museum travel to New York City as the 2017 loan exhibition in the Winter Antiques Show at Park Avenue Armory, held Jan. 20-29. “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” marks an exciting start to the museum’s 60th anniversary year. “It is fitting that the nation’s finest collection of American folk art will celebrate its 60th anniversary at the critically acclaimed Winer Antiques Show in the city where Mrs. Rockefeller’s remarkable philanthropy remains in evidence today,” Ronald Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H. Humselsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation and museums, said in a news release.

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife to John D. Rockefeller Jr., was a passionate collector of art who helped found New York’s Museum of Modern Art. As one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum remains the “oldest, continuously operating institution in the United States dedicated solely to the collection, exhibition and preservation of American folk art,” the release stated. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation last appeared in New York in 2001 at the Winter Antiques Show, a prestigious annual art, antiques and design fair. “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Revolution and Evolution” will include notable pieces from the museum’s collection, everything from paintings, drawings and sculpture to weathervanes, quilts and toys. The artifacts date from the 18th to 20th centuries – pieces created and used by everyday people, as the release described. Here are a few highlights. An oil painting dating to the 19th century, “Baby in Red Chair” was first obtained by Mrs. Rockefeller in 1931 and featured in a 1932 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Another painting, “Washington and Lafayette at the Battle of Yorktown” is a work by Ruben Law Reed whose ancestors fought at the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill.

Other unique items include a salt-glazed stoneware water cooler by Henry Lowndes of Petersburg and a depiction of George and Martha Washington in the Pennsylvania-German tradition of fraktur. Locally, the museum has much in store for the year ahead, beginning May 5 and 6 with a series of lectures, programs and special tours. On May 6, “America’s Folk Art” is set to open, introducing visitors to the world of folk art through select pieces from the museum’s collection. Finally, “We the People: American Folk Portraits” is scheduled to open at the museum on July 1 and includes around 50 folk portraits.

Perhaps the best-known and most beloved item on display in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is Baby in Red Chair. Created by an unknown painter in the early 19th century, it was among the first folk art items acquired by Mrs. Rockefeller for her personal collection. Strategy for fun By Wesley Wright If you like puzzling your way out of predicaments, Room Escape Williamsburg may be the place for you and your friends to enjoy some mind games and postholiday strategizing. Each group is placed into a room where they have to figure out how to use a set of clues to escape. Among the themes are Contagion, centered on a disease that is affecting the planet, and bank heist, where you have to figure out how to get into the safe

and out of the bank before the law arrives. The cost is $25 per person. Booking a time and place will show you how many open slots there are at any given time, so you and friends can choose a room accordingly: sessions last 90 minutes. Once you book your adventure on the company’s website, roomescapewilliamsburg.com, they ask that you show up at least 15 minutes early with your printed-out booking info. Don’t be late: there are no refunds and tardiness will affect the schedules

of the rest of the folks playing, so you won’t be allowed into the game.

Learning about how ELECTRONICS work 20% OFF your entire order

By Wesley Wright On almost every Saturday morning for the last 18 months, Steve Maricante and friends meet at RadioShack on Monticello Avenue to provide instruction in programming and technology for those who would like to learn how electronics work. Kids were welcome, too. “I originally wanted to get some guys around, just to tinker,” Marciante said. The equipment used at these informal meetups comes primarily from donations, and there is enough for anyone to use, from the very experienced to beginners. “There’s no set process,” Mariante said. “Every time we come in, we just wing it.” Anyone is welcome to come to the Saturday morning groups and those who have no interest in soldering or other high-tech methods are welcome to watch. That the group evolved to be mostly kids came as a surprise to Mariante. “It just morphed into a kids’ group,” he said. “As it turned out, it was the kids who started showing up.”

A new look at the

American Revolution By Wesley Wright What was originally the Yorktown Victory Center, is now the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, a state-of-the-art facility aimed at bringing America’s origin story into modern audiences. First stop is the theater where an expert storyteller walks visitors through a film that introduces them to the period. Just outside the theater are exhibits and galleries that walk them through the period using artifacts, dioramas and more. In its five permanent exhibits, the musuem tackles topics ranging from establishing a postwar economy to figuring out the nuances involved with freeing four million slaves. Among the pieces on display are paintings of some of the war’s major figures and weaponry from some of the battles. Just outside the main building, there’s a farm 14

where visitors can see how land-owning families lived during the time. You might even be able to pitch in on some chores such as pulling weeds, watering plants or preparing period food. Interpreters are on hand, and they’ll respond to your questions in character.

Storytelling for a

new generation By Wesley Wright Building on the maritime tradition of storytelling, the Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown hosts Story Slam, on the fourth Monday of each month. Listeners young and old can hear a storyteller and audience members speak in the evening on a variety of topics. The theme changes each

month. It was scary stories, in October, for example. The Weavers of the Word Storytelling Collaborative chooses the storytellers, and all are welcome to pitch their stories. The Watermen’s Museum is dedicated to preserving and informing the history of people who once fished in Chesapeake Bay to provide for their families.

Williamsburg Winery enjoys its spot on the Tasting Trail By Amanda Williams One way to weather the cold winter months is by exploring Williamsburg’s Tasting Trail, a select group of breweries, distilleries, a meadery and one winery, the Williamsburg Winery. While the tasting trail is new, established in 2016, the winery has been serving guests since 1985 and housing them at Wedmore Place since 2007. The 300-acre plot is also home to a café and tavern. “The tasting trail has certainly enhanced the Williamsburg experience in general,” said Michael Kimball, the winery’s assistant vice president of marketing. “Williamsburg has an amazing culinary scene and the Williamsburg tasting trail is a great way to navigate those kinds of craft beverage experiences.” 16

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

He said people often come to the winery from the other tasting trail stops and those leaving the winery frequently ask about other craft beverage locations to visit. With a tasting and tour at the winery, guests get a Williamsburg

Winery glass to take home. They offer a variety of tour and tasting options ranging from $9 to $40 as well as combinations that include lunch ($35 per person) and dinner ($80 per person). Newly opened for the 2016

holiday season is a tasting room and wine bar in Colonial Williamsburg, just off of Merchant’s Square on South Henry Street. The shop will be open through the New Year. The new wine bar offers all the same wines to purchase as the winery either by the bottle or glass in addition to a similar full tasting offered at the winery. What the tasting room boasts for the holiday is a spiced wine, served warm, that plays into the holiday theme. “There’s a lot of space at the tasting room for people to relax and enjoy their family or friends over a glass or bottle of wine,” Kimball said. “It’s a very open and relaxing space to unwind — pun intended — this holiday season.”

The holiday tasting room is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and is expected to remain open until Jan. 16.

things to do

Breweries central to Williamsburg Tasting Trail By Heather Bridges Three friends, all homebrewers, realize they brew better together. An Army veteran with a penchant for small business starts what was at the time the lone local brewery. Two college buddies quit corporate jobs to pursue their brewing dreams. The three breweries – Brass Cannon Brewing, Alewerks Brewing Company and Virginia Beer Company – have stories as distinctive as their products. What binds them is the ceaseless pursuit of quality beer and the place they call home: Williamsburg. It’s a connection further bound by the Williamsburg Tasting Trail, a tourism initiative by the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance that links the breweries to other local craft beverage offerings – a meadery, a winery and two distilleries. With Billsburg Brewery planning to open at James City County Marina, Williamsburg’s burgeoning beverage scene is growing still. Alewerks, started in 2006 by Chuck Haines, largely helped set the brewery stage. Haines opened what was then Williamsburg Alewerks with brewmaster Mike Pennsinger. It was Williamsburg’s only brewery at the time – a time that predated Senate Bill 604, allowing on-premise consumption at Virginia breweries. 18

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

The brewery recently celebrated 10 years and the hard-earned growth those years contained, in both business and brewing capacity. You’ll still find Alewerks’ first beer, the Tavern Ale, on tap. But current brewmaster and managing director Geoff Logan said there are usually 16 beers on tap at any given point, including seven year-round beers. “We want to be consistent, that’s for sure,” said Logan, who pursues a “cost-be-damned approach to top-notch beer.” Whether brewing the historical Old Stitch Brown Ale or the seasonal Pumpkin Ale, “quality is paramount,” Logan said. At Brass Cannon, just down the road from Alewerks, the beers lean more heavily to the historical. “We wanted to make something that kind of got back to the roots a little bit,” said Tony Artrip, who co-founded the brewery in 2012 with friends Phil Norfolk and Scott Kennedy, though the journey started long before, when the individual homebrewers decided to combine strengths and brew together. Artrip said Brass Cannon focuses on European and Early American styles and techniques, with several of the selections less hops-heavy and “more malt forward.”

Brass Cannon currently offers eight beers in the taproom, with five main-line brews including the best-selling “Angry Scot” Scottish strong ale and English-style “Barrage Brown Ale.” One of those eight beers changes nearly every other week, replaced with a new brew. Having moved locations and expanded in 2016, Brass Cannon is on a trajectory Artrip hopes continues. “If it keeps up the way it’s been going, I’m going to be a pretty happy camper,” he said. It’s a sentiment shared by Virginia Beer Company founders, Robby Willey and Chris Smith, two College of William and Mary grads who quit jobs as a financial analyst and a consultant to move back to Williamsburg and open a brewery in March 2016 The positive response over the past year has validated a passion born over beers in Williamsburg’s Green Leafe Café in 2007, furthered by homebrewing and turned into a business plan starting in 2010. “It’s why we came back (to Williamsburg),” Smith said. “It’s what we wanted to do.” Eight beers on tap include four year-round beers and four rotating beers. Virginia Beer Company’s two brewing systems, manned by brewmaster Jonathan Newman, allow constant variety in the taproom – Smith said the brewery produced 60 unique beers in its first nine months. Willey jokes the brewery often goes “off-script,” and that’s no less true of recipes that often deviate from style norms. They don’t joke about giving back, though, regularly involved in local fundraisers and finding ways to engage the community. In their own ways, Alewerks and Brass Cannon do the same. “It starts with great beer. I think we have that. But there’s so much more to it,” Smith said of creating community.

Distilleries share commitment to

craft, understanding of history

By Troy Jefferson It takes research and going the extra the mile to run a distillery. “We’re trying to be as authentic as we can,” said Bill Dodson, owner of the Williamsburg Distillery. The Williamsburg Distillery opened its doors in September 2015 and specializes in producing gin and rum. After a career as a math teacher and aerospace engineer, Dodson decided to shift gears and open up the Williamsburg Distillery. “My life has always been about making and fixing things,” Dodson said. Dodson wants the experience to be not only fun but informative as well. 20

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

“A tour through our distillery is a tour back in time. I want you to know the history of what you’re drinking,” Dodson said. The Williamsburg Distillery uses colonial methods to produce alcohol, which means they heat water, add grains then wait for “chemistry” to happen. Dodson said he avoids genetically modified corn so his bourbon and gin have a better taste. Dodson’s tours are a history lesson filled with anecdotal stories on the origin of liquor. Finding a niche is the backbone of running a successful distillery and the Williamsburg Distillery niche is incorporating history into alcohol production, according to Dodson. At the Copper Fox Distillery on Capitol Landing Road, their niche is creating different malted smoked

barleys, which provide a varied flavor. “There are very few distilleries in the world that malt their own barley,” said Rick Wasmund, owner of the Copper Fox Distillery. Copper Fox uses Applewood and cherry wood to add a different flavor to its whiskey. They specialize in gin, rye whiskey and single malt whiskey and expanded to Williamsburg from Sperryville in March 2015. Wasmund said he wanted the Copper Fox Distillery to be a “lifetime canvas of improvements” by continuing to expand the distillery.

things to do

Silver Hand adds a sweet taste to spirits trail By Amanda Williams If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get to know the Historic Triangle’s growing sprits industry a little better, add Silver Hand Meadery to the list; it is fast becoming a staple in Williamsburg. Not yet open a year, Silver Hand is a destination on Williamsburg’s Tasting Trail, which includes two wineries, three craft breweries and two distilleries. The process for making mead is similar to making other alcoholic favorites, owner Glenn Lavender said. 22

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

“We’re just doing simple fermentation like what happens with wine and beer,” Lavender said. “We could do almost the same process and just change the honey to get a completely different mead.” Traditionally, mead is 25 percent honey, 75 percent water, and yeast to help covert the sugar to alcohol as it ferments, Lavender said. Often a different honey or yeast creates the variety in flavors. Lavender said they use honey from around the U.S. depending on what flavor they want — like

an orange blossom honey from Florida, a blueberry honey from New Jersey, or a raspberry honey from the Pacific Northwest. They even have an avocado honey from Mexico and a Virginia wildflower honey produced locally. In one of Silver Hand’s varieties they use apple cider instead of water to create a kind of mead called a cyser. Silver Hand offers a guided honey tasting at set times each day where people can spend 30 minutes tasting six varieties of honey and learning about each -- where it comes from, what the different

varieties are and how it can affect the taste of the mead it becomes. The guided tasting is $9 for adults, $8 for those over 55, and $2 for children 4 to 12 years old. There is also a simply honey tasting for those who just want to try the six types of honey. The cost is $5 for those over 12 and $2 for those 4 to 12 years old. Those over 21 can taste a selection of meads for free anytime at Silver Hand. Lavender encourages people to go through both a honey tasting and the mead tasting for a fuller experience. “The best thing to do to help understand the whole drink of mead is to go through and taste the honeys that we use to make it,” Lavender said.

local business profile

Drink Williamsburg:

Connecting you with your buzz By Troy Jefferson Drink Williamsburg’s job is to bring you right to the alcohol. Drink Williamsburg is a touring company that uses a 14 seat bus to transport customers to various distilleries and restaurants around the Williamsburg area. Lance Zaal, co-owner of the business, said he did bar crawls in Williamsburg but faced Alcohol Beverage Control regulations on transportation from bar to bar, but he found that he could work around the restrictions with a tour bus. “We’re hoping we can expand to include more places,” Zaal said. “We’ve already had birthday parties and corporate parties booked.” Zaal and his co-owner Adam Theis have been in business for four months and said that so far reception has been positive. The tour usually begins with the customers meeting up at Paul’s Deli in New Town to grab a bite before and sometimes after, according to Zaal. Zaal said customers like to have food on their stomach before drinking. Drink Williamsburg hasn’t had an instance of someone being put off the tour for being drunk. “It’s been very well received,” Zaal said. “People have loved what we’ve put together. Most (touring companies) for our price only visit three places but we’re visiting four. Customers get a lot more for their money.” Zaal said right now the audience has mostly been people in their mid 20s- to 40s. Drink Williamsburg has one manager, three tour guides and three bus drivers. Tours go to the Silver Hand Meadery, the Brass Cannon, Williamsburg Distillery, Copper Fox Distillery and occasionally the Virginia Beer Company. The tour stops at each spot for 45 minutes and lasts for four hours total. Zaal said he would like to expand the tour to Richmond. “It’s gotten off to a really good start. People really love it,” Zaal said. 24

living & retiring here

Classes take a DIY approach to cooking By Brandy Centolanza Foodies looking to enhance their repertoire in the kitchen have plenty of options in the Williamsburg area to enroll in cooking classes or demonstrations. A Chef’s Kitchen on Prince George Street opened more than a dozen years ago as a way to offer guests a cooking demo dining experience. Patrons learn about food and wine while the chefs prep their meal in front of them. The menu switches up monthly to keep things fresh. “Everything on the menu is made fresh from high quality products, and made from scratch every day,” says Chef John Gonzales, owner of A Chef’s Kitchen. “I think the appeal of our dinner classes is varied and intertwined as our guests get to enjoy the sights, sounds, the interaction with classically trained chefs, and the flavors of exciting recipes served with paired wines. The concept excites all the senses.” Sara Benolkin-Shoop has visited A Chef’s Kitchen on multiple occasions. “The chefs are passionate about their concept and the food,” she says. “They cover the science and art of making a meal, recommend tools and techniques, or handy tips and innovations. The food is exemplary, and all the wines are $10 or less in their shop, and have an excellent rating from wine critics. You get a packet of the 32

recipes from the night to keep. I'm sure I have gone over 25 times, and I've kept every recipe. It's the real deal.” Taste Studio in Colonial Williamsburg has a similar set up. Chefs there prepare dishes based on class themes, and use ingredients from Colonial Williamsburg’s gardens whenever possible. “I love to cook, so any cooking class appeals to me,” says Donna Madison, who has taken a class on chocolate at the Taste Studio. “I love cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and anything that furthers my knowledge, and the Taste Studio has the historical education as a bonus. We loved hearing about the history of chocolate in colonial times, getting to taste how different the flavor experience was for them, and how it's evolved into the industry we now know.” The Confucius Institute at the College of William & Mary offers Chinese cooking classes, which are available to students as well as anyone else in the community who may be interested. “People are getting more and more interested in Chinese cooking,” shares Ying Liu, associate director for The Confucius Institute. “It’s exotic to them, and Chef McMahon leads students in making the second preparation of the food for the first cooking class of the session. Photo courtesy of The Confucius Institute at the College of William & Mary

they are curious how to cook it at home. The class is also a good place for socializing. It brings people together for the sharing of recipes and ideas. We have a real diverse group.” Williamsburg Farmers Market has frequent cooking demos under the Chef’s Tent. “We get chefs in different ways: chefs who shop at the market, farmers who wish to demonstrate something like how to make goat’s milk cheese, and chefs who are involved in the Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association,” explains Tracy Herner, manager for Williamsburg Farmers Market. “We also have produce demos each Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day as part of our Power of Produce Club. Visitors are always looking for new produce to try, and new ways to eat it. Of course, people like to sample, but they also like the techniques, and cool equipment these chefs have.” Williamsburg Area Learning Tree (WALT) also offers cooking classes. Allison Spears has co-taught classes on green smoothies and healthy desserts through WALT. Spears feels healthier meal prep is one of the main draws of cooking classes and demos. “I think people are more aware than ever that we can support or deplete our health through our food choices,” she says. “Many illnesses are diet and lifestyle related, and a lot of people are interested in

learning how to increase their health through natural food choices. Learning tips and tricks to cook healthy foods, or make raw dishes, which are real timesavers, is important since we all lead busy lives.”

things to do

Step lightly into the New Year By Amanda Williams For those who want to start the New Year on the right — or left — foot, the Hair of the Dog 5K will be back in Merchant’s Square for New Year’s Day 2017. The race, put on by Mettle Events, is in its 11th year. The Hair of the Dog 5K moved to Williamsburg from Virginia Beach last year, to ring in 2016. This will be its second time tracing the streets of Williamsburg. “We have a very large customer base in Richmond, Petersburg and that area – we’re a national company, so we’ve been doing conventional runs in Williamsburg for 12 years and DoG Street, Hair of the Dog, First Night, it was just an awesome fit,” Mettle Events owner Ann Hupp said. The race is part of Williamsburg’s First Night Celebration, a family-oriented, alcohol-free New Year’s celebration on Dec. 31. 34

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

Awards will be given for a variety of categories, including those still decked out in their formal wear from the night before. Starting at 10 a.m., runners can either walk or run the 5K course that starts in Merchant’s Square and winds its way through the College of William and Mary’s campus, wrapping around Zable Stadium and Kaplan Arena. More than 500 people raced last year, and Hupp expects a larger turnout for 2017. “It’s a healthy way to bring in the New Year,” Hupp said. “We have a lot of fun with it.” All net proceeds from the race will benefit the R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA. Each participant gets a T-shirt, finisher medal and access to a post-race party with food and drink. Registration is open online at www.hairofthedog.mettleevents. com and costs $40 until Dec. 26, at which point the price jumps to

$45 until race day. Other New Year’s Day races will be held around Hampton Roads, including Hampton and Norfolk.

Symphony offers an out-of-Williamsburg experience By Wesley Wright Looking for an evening of drinks and sublime music? Come by the Williamsburg Symphony’s Annual Cabaret & Cocktails Concert at the Williamsburg Lodge. The Piano Men, a four-piece band from Maine, will play hits from Elton John and Billy Joel. The symphony will play in the background, and will perform later in the evening. This year’s event is just the third for the symphony. Originally, the idea was to meld some experiences that symphony people had

in New York with a Williamsburg audience. “We asked ourselves, ‘what can we do that’s not already in Williamsburg?’ ” said Carolyn Keurajian, executive director of the symphony. Paying more gets you closer to the musicians, and purchasing tickets in groups of 10 will secure a table for you and your companions. All tickets lead to table seating, and if event organizers have their way, you’ll enjoy an evening full of music drinks around some of the people you value most. “We just wanted something

a little more playful and fun,” Keurajian said.

A little Dangers of morning cooking at home. music By Wesley Wright There aren’t too many places to hear organ music anymore, but those interested can plenty of it for free in Williamsburg, at the Wren Building on the William and Mary campus. The Wren building has stood for hundreds of years, and on any given Saturday, you can be treated to a concert in its chapel, featuring an organ that has been around since the 1790s. Rebecca Davy, the music director for Bruton Parish, knows her listeners enjoy contemporary music and she plays to their interests. On a Saturday morning, you’ll hear the sounds of modern songs and much older songs echoing off the walls of the chapel. The latter are songs that come from the same time period as the organ. Davy, who is also an organist, runs the concerts. Colonial Williamsburg bought the featured organ in the 1950s. They placed it in the Wren Chapel in 1970, where it has been an integral part of concerts since. All of the concerts are free, and since they are just 30 minutes long, they’ll leave time for breakfast in downtown Williamsburg or a brisk walk through Colonial Williamsburg and the rest of the historic area.

Let the food

carry you away at

Istanbul

By Brandy Centolanza Those looking to soak in some Turkish culture and cuisine can find their fill at Istanbul Restaurant on Jamestown Road. Istanbul opened in October 2015 in the space where Nazar used to be. The new restaurant, owned and operated by Zeki Mukus, specializes in Mediterranean dishes. Mukus, a native of Turkey, is also the head chef. “We wanted to bring a part of our culture here,” says Kerim EK, another Turkish native and manager of Istanbul. “Most people can’t go to Turkey, so we wanted to bring it to them.” EK came to the United States eleven years ago, and worked for several years as a food and beverage manager for a few cruise lines before relocating to the Williamsburg area. A friend introduced him to Mukus, and the two discovered they were from the 38

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017

same area of Turkey. “That was a nice surprise,” says EK, who started working for Mukus at Istanbul earlier this year. “I love my job. I started working in this business when I was 19, and I just want to share my experience with the customers.” Each meal at Istanbul begins with a sampling of Turkish olives, and bread with various dips. Kebobs are among the most popular dishes, particularly the lamb shanks. “We cook the lamb exactly like our grandmothers used to cook it, and it is very tender,” EK says. “We also use our own herbs.” Also hits with patrons are the garlic tiger shrimp and karniyarik, which is eggplant stuffed with meat and vegetables. The menu also includes soups, salads, wraps, seafood, and other Mediterranean fare like hummus, falafels, stuffed grape leaves, eggplant salad, and tabuleh salad. There is also a kids’ menu.

“The American customers love it,” says EK. “They’ve been really impressed. Everything is going great.” Istanbul also has nightly entertainment in the dining room, including Turkish music and belly dancers. Customers are also welcome to bring their own music. Weather permitting, the restaurant has a patio for dining al fresco, where guests can bring their dogs. In addition to Mukus and EK, there are two other cooks and three waitresses at Istanbul who aim to please their guests each day. “We all work so hard and are just so humbled by this, and just want to thank our customers when they come in here,” EK says. “Our goal is to give people what they deserve. People deserve to be happy when they are here. We also don’t want them to ever go away hungry. That is just unacceptable to us.” Mukus and his family also own Jamestown Pie Company next door. Jamestown Pie Company has been a fixture in Williamsburg for years, and specializes in savory pot pies and dessert pies. Chicken pot pies, and pecan and bumbleberry pies are best-sellers, though Jamestown Pie Company also sells salads, sandwiches, and pizza. “We’ve been around a long time, and people really like our pies,” says Mukus’ son, Volkan Mukus, who operates Jamestown Pie Company. “Queen Elizabeth bought a pie from us when she was here. That’s a good feeling.” The Mukus family would like to expand that businesses and add more BBQ dishes such as pulled pork and brisket to their menus as well as more outdoor seating, perhaps as early as next summer. “What we want is to offer our customers both quality service and quality, healthy food in a clean atmosphere,” says EK. “If we can give them both, then they will be back.”

Positive results I knew that advertising my new small business in the Williamsburg Magazine would be a wise decision. I was right! The response has been so positive and encouraging. The magazine ad definitely got the word out that there is a new consignment store in town and the map included in the magazine led customers and consigners right to my door. Working with Kathy and LouAnne has been a great experience. Their design ideas and work ethic resulted in the exact ad that I had in mind. I have always been a fan of the Magazine and found it to be a wonderful resource. It is also a great supporter of the small business owner and I am proud to advertise with them.
