2010 James City County Fair is dedicated to

Sandy Wanner in recognition of his 25 years of service James City County has held an Expo or County Fair for 33 years highlighting our agricultural heritage. For the last 20 of those years, County Administrator Sandy Wanner, who retires from County service August 1, 2010, has been an enthusiastic supporter and contributor to the Fair’s success and popularity. Since his first year as a member of the County Fair Committee in 1990, Sandy has helped to nurture and grow this uniquely local community event. As Assistant County Administrator, Sandy was on the County Fair Committee and has remained a supporter and member when possible despite his additional pressures and responsibilities as County Administrator. Recognizing the Fair’s popularity and the need to improve facilities and accommodate growing attendance, Sandy paved the way to move the Fair from its beginnings in Norge to Upper County Park and finally to its current location, Chickahominy Riverfront Park. James City County’s support is largely due to Sandy. It goes beyond his personal commitment to include the many hours dedicated by his staff, the availability of County park facilities, and the assurance that the County will be an active partner year after year. It would be hard to imagine what the County Fair would look like today without the leadership and vision that Sandy Wanner has shared. Therefore, it is only appropriate that the 2010 James City County Fair is dedicated to him in recognition of 25 years of service to the community and steadfast support of the Fair.

Camels Return to the James City County Fair Who would have thought in James City County that camel rides would be so popular? But, they were . . . and enjoyed by so many last year, we just had to bring them back! Camel Arts & Entertainment, LLC at Lost World Ranch in Burke’s Garden, Virginia, returns to the Fair and brings the camels with them.

If you have never seen a camel up close or ridden one, we invite you to come on out to the Fair. It’s a ride like no other!

Lawn Mower Racing returns to James City County Fair! Sponsored by James River Fleet Lawn Mower Racing returns to the Fair on Friday evening and continues Saturday afternoon. These mowers might look like they came straight from mowing the front yard, but they are really highly modified, super fast machines. This event is coordinated by the Virginia Lawn Mower Racing Association (VLMRA), which is affiliated with the American Racing Mower Association (ARMA). For more information, please visit: http://www.vlmra.com/ and http://www.golawnmowerracing.com/. Officially, ARMA rules cover seven classes of racing. The classes are divided based upon the amount of modification to the lawn mower and the engine size.

• The most minimally modified lawn mower is the Super Stock class. While some changes are permitted, mowers must maintain an 8 to 1 gear ratio. Mowers built in a similar manner are raced by pre-teens through 15 year olds in the Junior Prepared class. • The Mini-Sportsman class mowers were built from original engine blocks that were 8.5 horsepower and under. • The Sportsman class mowers use valve-in-block motors, originally built at 8.5 horsepower and over.

• Our newest class is the Mod-X class, built from either a single overhead valve or twin opposed valve-in-block motor that started as 20 horsepower and under. • Super Sportsman mowers start with motors 25 horsepower and under. • And, the Pro-X class uses a variety of single cylinder, four stroke lawn mower engines with unlimited horsepower ratings. The ARMA rulebook provides more details concerning mower builds and specifications. ARMA, the first national group to have a JP class for kids at a national level, believes in the family and want to include everyone at the races. If all you’re doing is cutting grass . . . get out of the way! Be sure to check out the motor races on Friday and Saturday.

Author’s Talk Series Thursday, June 24 5 p.m. Local author Edward Lull will kick off the talks with “Poetry for Fun”. Some people find poetry to be primarily a serious cultural art; others believe that poetry should be entertaining. Perhaps there's room for both within the genre. This presentation will discuss poetry that's fun to write and fun to present (without surrendering your serious side). Edward is the author/editor of Cabin Boy To Captain: A Sea Story; The Sailors: Birth Of A Navy; Vintage Wine And Good Spirits: The Williamsburg Poetry Guild Toasts The 20th Century; and Where Giants Walked. He will be available for book signings at 5:30 p.m.

6 p.m. Next, we are pleased to have children’s author Laurie Krebs. She will be doing a presentation entitled Writing for Young Children, focusing on teaching the basics of writing for young readers. Laurie has authored more than 16 children’s books, including The Beeman, Off We Go To Mexico: An Adventure In The Sun; Up And Down The Andes: A Peruvian Festival Tale; and her latest book We’re Roaming In The Rainforest: An Amazon Adventure. She will be available for book signings at 6:30 p.m. 7 p.m. The third author talk will be “Overcoming Writer’s Block”, given by Greg Lilly. The author of over 20 short stories, numerous magazine articles and three novels, Lilly has discovered several tricks to get words on the page. Whether you are working on a memoir, short story, novel, non-fiction book, or just your personal journal, the workshop teaches techniques for finishing that project. Lilly is currently working on his next book, using these tools to complete the manuscript by his deadline. Greg’s novels include: Under A Copper Moon; Devil's Bridge; and Fingering the Family Jewels. He will be available for book signings at 7:30 p.m. 8 p.m. The fourth and final author to present will be L.B. Taylor. He will be talking about his books on ghosts. The author of books such as Civil War Ghosts Of Virginia; Ghost Stories Of Virginia (volumes 1-12); and Rescue!: True Stories Of Heroism. His talk, set in the waning hours of sunlight, will be both inviting and intriguing. He will be available for book signings at 8:30 p.m.

2010 Farm Bureau Tractor Pull Sponsored by Farm Bureau

WASABI

The James City County Fair Committee is pleased to present the 5th Annual Farm Bureau Tractor Pull. The 2010 event will again include a lawn garden tractor pull on Friday, June 25, beginning at 4 p.m., and an Antique (manufactured in 1959 or before) farm tractor pull on Saturday, June 26, starting at 10 a.m. If you’ll remember, the tractor pull is a competition in which farm tractors pull a weighted sled down a level, measured dirt track. The tractors are divided among different weight classes, and in each weight class the tractor that pulls the sled the furthest wins! In the beginning, the sled creates very little resistance. However, as the sled moves down the dirt track the weights on the sled move forward, creating more and more resistance until the tractor can’t pull anymore. Sponsored by the Charles City, James City, New Kent, and York County Farm Bureaus, the tractor pull is again made possible by the members of Reunion of the Past, Branch 104, of the Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association, in Yorktown. For more information, please visit these websites: http://www.reunionofthepast.8m.net/ and http://www.edgeta.org/.
