The “Cat” is out

Art-cade hosts 13th annual Seuss exhibit and sale

“The Art of Dr. Seuss: The Cat That Changed the World” will take place during July at The Artcade Gallery of Williamsburg, 1321 Jamestown Road, Suite 204 in the Williamsburg Office Park The “Cat” will be front-and-center during the month at the Art-cade Gallery of Art. Featured is a spectrum of artwork by Dr. Seuss ranging from his book illustrations and “secret art” he did for his own enjoyment to wall sculptures crafted for commercial advertising clients in the 1930s. A featured print provides the theme of this year’s show: “The Cat That Changed the World,” reproduced from Ted Geisel’s first concept drawing of his character. (The original art is permanently housed at the University of California, San Diego.) The Library of Congress recently chose 88 influential books that have “shaped Americans’ views of their world and the world’s views of America.”

Among the likes of Twain, Whitman and Thoreau stood Dr. Seuss and his iconic creation – “The Cat in the Hat,” the Cat that changed the world of children’s literature. Since his creation in 1957 “The Cat” has guided children and their adult companions through the trials and tribulations of life’s experiences. And during the same 50 year career Dr. Seuss created a whole menagerie of other memorable characters who each in its own way played a role in the reader’s journey of growing up. Dr. Seuss has become the definitive children’s literacy author of all time (over 600 million books sold) and his Cat continues to “step out,” enjoying his rightful legacy as the visual icon of our literary past, present and future. The Art-cade is one of about 30 art galleries in the country where authorized Dr. Seuss artwork can be purchased. It has a large inventory of these limited edition prints and sculptures. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday. Families visiting the gallery in July can register to win a “Cat in the Hat” cookie jar. For information, call The Art-cade Gallery in the Williamsburg Office Park at 565-7424 or see other artwork on its website: www.artcadeonline. com

Construction has begun on The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. When the 80,000 sq. ft. facility is completed in 2016, it will replace the Yorktown Victory Center. A logo for the new museum incorporating the name with patriotic imagery of a soaring eagle and stars, in red and blue on a white background, was adopted by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Board of Trustees and JamestownYorktown Foundation, Inc., Board of Directors along with a new logo for Jamestown Settlement. Full implementation of both logos will also begin in 2016, the year the transition from Yorktown Victory Center to American Revolution at Yorktown will be complete. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will chronicle the Revolution from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the early national period and consider its meaning and impact. The project encompasses reorganization of the 22-acre site, a new building to house expanded exhibition galleries, classrooms and support functions and expansion and relocation of the existing re-created Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. Total cost of planning and major components is estimated at $50 million. While exhibits and parking availability will be impacted at various stages of construction, which started in 2012, the Yorktown Victory Center will continue in daily operation while the transition to American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is under way. 21

Feed the birds Wild Birds Unlimited can help During summer, some people may decide not to feed their backyard birds, figuring there is enough food available during the warmer weather. But according to Val and George Copping of Wild Birds Unlimited at Monticello Marketplace, summer is the prime time for bird feeding. “It is important to provide seeds in the summer,” George Copping said recently. “Deer decimate native

plants, and birds have babies in spring and summer so it’s important to keep the feeders filled up. People think they don’t need to feed birds in summer, but if you think about it, there is the maximum amount of birds but the least amount of seeds in the wild.” Suet for woodpeckers and meal worms for blue birds are also great additions to backyard bird feeding. A water supply is also crucial. “Birds don’t use the rivers and lakes, so water is very important both in summer and winter to drink but for feather maintenance. We try to encourage people to provide food, water and shelter-places for them to raise their young.” The Coppings are glad to offer advice to those who visit the store with questions about how to attract and support birds. They advise people about the best foods and feeders for certain birds. “That is what we are here for,” he said. “We give lots of advice and recommendations about many different things.” The store, which has been in business since 1990 has gained a solid reputation for offering a full and diverse line of bird feeding items including feeders, seeds, gifts and birdbaths. The store has a loyal local customer base as well as many visitors to the area. “We carry everything bird and nature related,” Copping said. “We attempt to bring people and nature together.” This summer, the Coppings are promoting the many products in the store which are American made ranging from the bird seed to feeders. “I think I have more items that are American made than many of the stores in the area,” he said. Copping said he is encouraged that there is a proliferation of birds in the area this summer. Last fall there was a decline in the amount of birds through the Mid-Atlantic States, but so far this season, the numbers are robust. And they are hungry. That gives people the chance to spot more and diverse birds out their windows. “Birding is a wonderful hobby,” he said. “It provides people with nature, color and light.” -Ann Efimetz Photos by Ann Efimetz

Positive results I consistently get a noticeable response from my ads placed in the “Williamsburg Magazine”. I run a small-sized ad monthly and it brings in tourists and locals alike. The staff is easy to deal with and very helpful. If I had to cut my advertising budget, this would be the last to go. -Jennifer Raines Owner, Quirks of Art WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JULY 2013

Buon Amici in New Town has recently celebrated six years of serving locals and visitors the finest traditional Italian classics. Owners Tony and Denise Berardi take pride in providing patrons with food prepared from the freshest ingredients available and served by a top-notch wait staff. “We provide a fine dining experience in a casual yet elegant setting,” Denise Berardi said. “Our wait staff is well-trained and knowledgeable, taking great pride in offering great service and recommendations for both food and wines.” The restaurant recently welcomed new Executive Chef Stephan Luna, who prepares traditional Italian classics with a unique flair for flavor and the utmost respect for the cuisine in its elegant simplicity. He honed his skills working with renowned chefs at Charlie Trotter’s and Moto Restaurant in Chicago, Spago Beverly Hills and The Dark Room on Melrose in West Hollywood. Luna chooses to use produce, seafood and items available locally and combine those ingredients with the experience and techniques he has learned to create a unique dining experience for Buon Amici diners. Fresh pasta and ravioli are made in house daily as well as handstretched fresh mozzarella. “We are well known for our fresh seafood, veal dishes, our fresh pastas and authentic New York Style pizzas, baked in high temperature brick ovens,” Berardi said. The new Buon Amici menu features a new favorite created by Luna, Castelvetrano Olives and Pomodoro Jam, using meaty green olives that are lightly breaded and fried.

Berardi added that they are very proud of the seasonal menu created by Luna. The ambiance at the restaurant provides visitors and locals a place that is comfortable and friendly. “People say it’s like Cheers where everyone knows your name,” Berardi said. “We love being the local spot for many and enjoy getting to know our guests and spending time with them. Our bar is a local favorite place to eat because it’s roomy and our bartenders provide great, attentive service.” The goal is to provide the finest service with every attention to detail, accommodating special requests as well as special dietary needs. Chef Luna recently launched his first menu and plans to update it frequently to utilize the freshest ingredients of the season. He has incorporated local sources and also imports many items from Italy. New to the restaurant will be “Chef’s Table Wine Dinners.” Those will take place monthly in one of the new, intimate dining rooms. The dinners will include multiple courses with carefully selected fine wine pairings. Those who have visited the restaurant before can return to experience all that’s new. “It’s the next generation of Buon Amici,” Berardi said. “We felt after six years it was time for a refreshing change. The recent addition of our new executive chef and his culinary team has created a lot of excitement both with the staff and our guests.”

son, who confirmed that’s where the bracelet had been purchased. In her next visit to the store, the young woman told owner Holly Shields about her experience. “I love hearing stories like that,” Shields said recently. “I have been in places myself and seen the bracelets I have made on someone. I say to myself, ‘I made that.’” And that is pretty nice to be able to do.” The store has been offering unique items since 1982. The inventory has evolved over the years and features a full line of jewelry, baby items, pewter and unique gifts. Bracelets are among the most popular and the store carries a variety of styles, all made on the premises. “I think that many people realize I make the bracelets here, but I

also think there are many who don’t know that,” she said. “Each bracelet is hand made in sterling silver.” She added that some of her pieces are gold filled and she does offers some in gold, however, the price is usually cost prohibitive. Many cuff-style bracelets can be engraved on the inside or outside. They can be engraved by machine or hand engraved by a master engraver. There is also a full line of pewter that can be engraved. “The pewter is very attractive with engraving,” she said, adding that the store does a lot of trophies and awards for local teams and organizations. “Some people really do appreciate pewter, it is a nice metal that has been around for a very long time.” The store is licensed by the College of William & Mary and there is a variety of items with the college seal and cypher on it for purchase. There are many pieces of distinctive jewelry including pendants available, made by Virginia craftsmen. Christmas and graduation are busy seasons at Master Craftsmen. During the holidays, Shields sells numerous pewter Christmas angels. The store began offering angel ornaments in 1985 and in 2009 started offering Santa ornaments. Each year Shields has created a new Santa to collect. “We sell a lot of them,” she said. “It is like a tradition to get them.”

A beautification project to bring flowers to the front of businesses on Prince George Street has blossomed recently. Some 14 vases brimming with hardy flowers and plants dot Prince George Street and an adjacent block of North Boundary Street. Nearly every Prince George Street business has agreed to go pitch in for maintenance of the containers which is estimated to cost about $10,000 annually. The goal of the landscaping is to make a colorful and easy transition from Colonial Williamsburg to Prince George Street. The large containers can be planted according to the season and will continue to distinguish the street. The future may bring more vases to other nearby locations. -Ann Efimetz

Records set

Sam Cohen’s extensive collection When Sam Cohen was a youngster, his cousin gave him a phonograph and 11 records from the Big Band era. That was enough to ignite what has become a lifelong passion. Cohen, 84, began listening to the music in childhood and then developed an interest in the band leaders and musicians. Before long, his record collection had grown from about a dozen to hundreds. Currently he owns about 2,000 LPs and numerous 78 rpm records. He and his wife, Dorothy share a home in Heritage Commons, but it is not Photo by Ann Efimetz without compromise. She has plenty of room to work on her colorful artwork, and he has converted two closets to store the collection.

“It’s always been, love Sam, love his music,” Dorothy Cohen said in a recent interview. “He had quite a collection when I first met him.” And that hasn’t changed. The collection has grown over the years to a point where Cohen said he likely couldn’t find a record from the “swing era” that he didn’t already own. About four years ago Cohen acquired a record collection from a man who was converting his LPs to CDs. Cohen jumped at the chance to get the records, but admitted he already had many of the titles. Most of the music he has is from 1935 through the end of World War II. That’s when the music industry began changing and many of the groups disbanded, giving rise to the popularity of the solo singer.

easily. To got through them and play them alphabetically, it took me about two and half years.” When asked his favorite, he quickly responded. “My favorite orchestra is Jimmy Dorsey, and that surprises people,” he said. “But he had a vocalist in his band, Bob Eberly who I thought was the best ever.”

ACTIVE ADULT/ RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

His love for music never translated to his learning an instrument. However, he is always eager to talk to others who share his passion for Big Bands. “I would love to talk to anyone who is knowledgeable so we could share information about the Swing Era.” –Ann Efimetz

Not only is Cohen an avid listener and collector, he prides himself as a historian of sorts. “I know about the bands and the musicians,” he said. “I have read almost everything available on them.” That includes Internet sites, which he said are not the most reputable. “The computer is great fro getting information,” he admits. “The thing is people can put whatever they want on the Internet. Sometimes what I read makes me wince because it is so wrong.” Cohen has meticulously keeps the records in pristine condition. When the couple moved from Kingsmill to Heritage Commons, the records had special handling. “I brought them here in the van,” he recalled. “I probably made about 20 trips.” Cohen has carefully categorized the collection. “I have them broken down by orchestra alphabetically,” he said. “That way I can find what I want

I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor

Make Room for the Memories.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!

Save 20% with a combination ticket to both museums.
