Celebrate independence in July The month opens with a grand celebration of our Independence. The area comes alive with activities for the entire family including colorful fireworks displays at Colonial Williamsburg and in Yorktown. It is a great way to observe our country’s freedom. This issue is packed with a variety of articles celebrating people who call our area home. Our chef’s feature this month is Anthony Scordo of Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant on Olde Towne Road. As a young chef, he brings an enthusiasm to the kitchen, reflective in the restaurant’s varied menu. Our Women in Business feature celebrates sisters Pam Redmond and Cheryl Olander of Paisley in New Town. The sisters have been brining distinctive gifts to locals and visitors for the past seven years. The Virginia Shakespeare Festival continues this month at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. “Illyria” and “Julius Caesar” are being presented and are a wonderful way to see some of the Bard’s works done locally. Appropriately, meet Christopher Owens in our Head of the Class feature. Owens is the festival’s artistic director and has recently been appointed as chair of William and Mary’s Department of Theatre, Speech & Dance Department. Check out our area’s newest thrift store, New2You in our Great Find section, learn about American Red Cross pet first aid classes in our Pet Corner, find out more about the Linda Matney Art Gallery in our Local Spin section and read about The Art-cade Gallery’s annual Dr. Seuss exhibit. There is so much to see and do in the Historic Triangle this month. Take it in.

what’s cooking?
Classically different By Ann M. EÀmetz
Anthony Scordo started cooking as a child growing up in his native New Hampshire. He always had an interest in working in the kitchen, and that affinity has continued through his life. As a father, he is passing his proclivity for the culinary to his son, Carter. The family aspect of creating tasty recipes is prevalent at Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant on Olde Towne Road, which Anthony’s dad, Joe Scordo opened in 1992. Since, the father-and-son duo has built a loyal clientele of locals and visitors who enjoy the restaurant’s intimate atmosphere and the delicious fare. “We have a lot of regulars and we get new regulars,” Scordo said in a recent interview at the restaurant. “We have had some of the same people who have been coming here since we opened. You build up relationships with people. You get to know them and what they like to eat. That is rewarding to me, to know that we are doing that kind of job.” Chef Sean Carroll was recently hired by Scordo to work in the kitchen, allowing Scordo to spend more time running the day-to-day operation. Scordo said Carroll is a good fit for Giuseppe’s because he is creative, consistently coming up with distinctive dishes for the menu. Although the business aspects often take Scordo away from the kitchen, he continues
preparing food regularly, experimenting with recipes. “We do a fish of the day and that is our most creative dish,” Scordo said. “It is our best seller. We sell more of our fish of the day than anything. The close second is our meatballs.” And will he share the secret to the quintessential meatball? “It is a classic recipe,” he said with a laugh, not to reveal details. “We cook them all day. We drop them at 8 a.m. and they slowly cook all day, absorbing all the sauce.” When Scordo is away from the restaurant, he enjoys cooking for his family. “A lot of professional chefs don’t cook at home,” he said. “But I love to cook at home. I like to cook the basic things. Lobster is one of my favorite items. I also love lamb and I have a fascination with Tex-Mex cooking.” Scordo said he continually challenges himself in the kitchen, so as not to become bored. And he is always tweaking and ex-
perimenting with new flavors to introduce in recipes. “You have to have a pragmatic approach to cooking,” he said. “If it doesn’t turn out the way that you want, you have to go back and tweak it. Sometimes you have to do that.” That was the case with the restaurant’s eggplant parmesan. He continually worked the recipe to get it just right. “I get so many compliments on the eggplant,” Scordo said. “There was a lady who recently visited Williamsburg on vacation and came here five times. She had eggplant every night.” Scordo said that word-ofmouth continues to be the best advertising. People who eat at the restaurant tend to want to come back. “People who come to town on vacation sometimes find us on their last night and say, ‘I wish we had found you earlier,’” Scordo said. “That is a real compliment.”

Traveling
the World
By Ann M. EÀmetz
You can travel the world through the photography of Doris Baker in a special exhibit at the Swem Library at the College of William and Mary. “Viewing the World: Travel Photography through Doris Baker’s Lens” is on display through Dec. 7 in the library’s third floor Rotunda Gallery. The exhibit contains a variety of images Baker took on her travels throughout the world. Baker, now 97, is a former Williamsburg resident, who now lives in Virginia Beach. She was born in Montana and grew up in Michigan. The exhibit celebrates her fascination with the cultures of other countries and the photos she captured give the viewer a glimpse into the lives that she encountered. The people she captured on film are one of the most striking aspects of the exhibit. Summer hours through Aug. 3 are 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday.

Enjoying art at
Linda Matney Gallery By Ann M. EÀmetz Ever visited the Linda Matney Gallery? If not, you may be surprised at what you find. The gallery, located 5435 Richmond Road is a showcase of contemporary works of art. The gallery is named after Linda Matney, who lost her battle with cancer in 2001. Her son, Lee Matney, is the gallery’s owner and director. He has been working tirelessly to bring in exhibits of local, national and international fame to town. The gallery presents a mix of exhibitions and programs. There have been some extraordinary exhibits including the wellattended, X-Radiance exhibition in 2013. That exhibit was developed with College of William and Mary’s American Studies PhD candidate, Lita Tirak. It included a significant amount of curated material. “I really feel it is rewarding to bring such projects to Williamsburg,” Matney said.

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JULY 2014
The gallery carries a diverse range of paintings including Kent Knowles, Tyrus Lytton, Jeff Surace and Jeffrey Whittle, who according to Matney have been widely collected in Hampton Roads and Richmond via the gallery. A fundraising project for the rain forest is in the works for the last part of this year. “We are working with charity in Brazil as well as anthropologist on the project,” Matney said. “The result will be an Photo by Ann M. EÀmetz exhibition which will include some national and regional artist with proceeds going to clean water projects in the Amazon.” The exhibit “Untitled 1” runs through July 19. It features the work of Nina Barnes, Naomi Falk, Janice Hathaway, Kent Knowles, Kristen Lied, Megan Marlatt, Wade Mickley, Anil Thambai and Sofia Zu’Bi. Want to go? Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. Special viewing appointments are available. Visit www.lindamatneygallery.com.

head of the class
Christopher Owens, College of William and Mary By Ann M. EÀmetz Title—Chair, Department of Theatre, Speech & Dance, College of William and Mary and Producing Artistic Director, Virginia Shakespeare Festival How many years at the job? 10 years as a W&M professor and director of the festival, first year as chair of the department. What do you like the most about what you do? The very bright students we have at W&M, who challenge me to stay on top of what’s happening in the theatre world so I can prepare them for what’s really out there. The world of auditions is changing yearly with electronic submission not just for film but for stage work as well. Even the teaching of Shakespeare is evolving and so my membership in the Shakespeare Theatre Association and trips to Stratford and The Globe that I’ll have done recently become even more important so I can know how my peers are directing and teaching What has surprised you most in the years you have been at W&M? Probably that 10 years have gone by so quickly. What has been your greatest accomplishment so far? Just the shows themselves, both for the college and on professional stages around the country where I direct. I’ve staged over 170 productions in my life, hoping to hit 200 by the time I retire. What kind of recognition have you received for your work? I was a recipient of the Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence at W&M in 2013, recognizing a combination of teaching and research and that was a very gratifying acknowledgement from my colleagues. The applause of audiences at each performance is really the most i important recognition.

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JULY 2014
What is the most gratifying aspect of working with the Virginia Shakespeare Festival? The chance to gather with professionals from all over the country to work on possibly the greatest pieces of dramatic literature around. Also, through the series of Young Shakespeare Camps we run each summer, to instill that appreciation of Shakespeare’s artistry and vibrant storytelling in younger performers. To watch middle school kids throw themselves into Shakespeare with such joy and courage and spontaneity is really a treat. What is the most gratifying aspect of working with the young artists at W&M? To watch them grow over four years. The person that walks out of the door of the theatre department at W&M and into the world is most often a very different person than walked in as a freshman. What surprises are the audiences who attend the VSF this year in for? I think our production of Illyria, can surprise a non-Shakespeare lover into giving some of his other works a try, even without music. For those seeing Julius Caesar they’ll be surprised that these big speeches that they may have had to memorize in high school are actually great “scenes.” What does the future hold for you? I’m just starting my term as Chair of our department so that future is the most immediate one. I want our department to engage more with the Williamsburg community and I think the variety of civic contacts I’ve built over this decade of running the festival will help me do that. I want our department’s shows to run like professional theatre productions so when our students leave here and walk into their first job at a professional regional theatre they’ll be able to say “Oh yeah, I understand, that’s just the way we did it at William & Mary.

Art Show
at the Art-cade Gallery Most people can likely recite some words of Dr. Seuss. His 48 books have sold over 600 million copies. His drawings are icons in contemporary culture. This month, the Art-cade Gallery will hold its 14th annual “Dr. Seuss Art Show” and sale of authorized reproductions of his artwork. Dr. Seuss never sold his original artwork to the public during his lifetime. After his death, however, his estate began permitting limited edition, hand-crafted prints of original drawings to be reproduced. Also some of his lesser known three-dimensional works have been released as limited edition reproductions. This year The Art-cade is carrying Prints for Kids, a series of the most memorable images designed for a child’s bedroom, playroom or other such environment. The newest fine art Seuss print on display at the Art-cade Gallery shows a different side of Seuss. It is a comical drawing entitled “The Facts of Life,” which originally appeared on the back cover of the July 1937 issue of “Ballyhoo” magazine. Dr. Seuss has become the definitive children’s literacy author of all time and his “Cat” continues to enjoy its rightful legacy as the visual icon of our literary past, present and future. 34
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JULY 2014
As an author and artist Dr. Seuss is unique in that his work touches four generations of readers. According to Seuss’ wife, when Seuss finished his daily schedule he used to paint for his own pleasure well into the night. Those paintings remain in the estate’s private collection. These images known as “The Secret Art” show a different side of Seuss. Even the titles of this Secret Art collection make one’s imagination run wild: “A Plethora of Fish,” “Sun Bathing Bird,” and “Lion Stroll.” Reproductions of these and more are at the Art-cade Gallery in addition to popular illustrations from his timeless children’s books. For further information, call the Art-cade, 565-7424 or visit its website: www.artcadeonline.com

Make Room for the Memories.
An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!

Rocking it out at Busch Gardens
By Ann M. EÀmetz “London Rocks” is a new 25-minute musical extravaganza that marks the return of live entertainment to Busch Gardens’ Globe Theatre. The show opened in May and has been packing in audiences since. The show’s two casts allow for up to eight shows daily. The Globe Theatre was entirely renovated for the production and features comfortable seats, wide aisles and is decked out to give audiences the feel of a London theatrical space. The technical aspects of the show include 110,000 lumens of video-mapped imagery produced by five state-of-the-art projectors. The theater boasts concertstyle lighting and nearly 2,000 speakers. There are two speakers in every seat, aimed at providing a surroundsound experience for guests. At different points in the show the seats vibrate and produce a waft of air, repurposed from their former stint as part of a fourdimensional show in the same theater.
“London Rocks” also features more than 54,000 drawings of video animation cells, nearly 900 costume pieces, 76 miles of audio, video and electrical cables and 56,000 foot candles of rock n’ roll lighting. The show has a spirited young cast, zippy choreography, spectacular lighting and vibrant costumes. It is accompanied by a driving selection of classic British rock that defined a generation. There is popular music and clever use of animation making the show distinctive. Songs run the gamut from The Rolling Stones’ “It’s Only Rock N’ Roll” to The Beatles’ “All You Need is Love.” It’s colorful and happy, a good way to spend a half hour. According to Busch Gardens, an international team of more than 500 artists and craftsmen created the show. The show’s very English theme carries outside the theatre. The England village has been bedecked with British flags and a model of a double decker bus that doubles as a souvenir stand. The show runs daily. Visit www.seaworldparks.com for more information.

July See & Do • Independence Day — Celebrate the Fourth of July in the place where independence began, Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City! Red Cross helps owners care for pets By Ann M. EÀmetz
What would you do if your dog or cat got stung by a bee? What if they sustained an injury and you couldn’t get them to a veterinarian immediately? The American Red Cross offers pet owners and those who may care for pets (including pet sitters) with a chance to learn skills that could be vital in the event of a pet emergency or illness. Patrick Belcher, executive director of the Peninsula Cluster Chapters, which includes the Getty Images photo
local Colonial Virginia Chapter on Strawberry Plains Road, said the classes can be invaluable for those with pets or who care for pets. “The classes help create awareness about what is happening with pets, because they can’t communicate,” Belcher said. The classes can be helpful to people of all ages, including kids who may be hired to walk pets or pet sit for a neighbor or relative who may be traveling or at work. “The classes really describe to participants how to prepare for an emergency,” he said. The four-hour class covers common mishaps including insect or snake bites, heat exposure and exhaustion and basic first aid. “These classes help them to know what to do in those situations,” he said. Want to take a class? They are ongoing and are usually held once a month at either the Williamsburg or York Poquoson office. For more information, visit www.redcross.org.

Sister Act Pam Redmond and Cheryl Olander, owners of Paisley By Ann M. EÀmetz When you talk to Pam Redmond and Cheryl Olander, owners of Paisley in New Town, you get the sense they are not only business partners, but friends. Their warm personalities imbue the store, making it a fun place to shop for locals and visitors. The items are chosen to provide something distinctive. Customers are the top priority. “We enjoy our customers, and we enjoy
each other,” Olander said in a recent interview at the store. “We have a fabulous staff and I think our customers respond to that. It is a fun place—I think that is the main aspect. People who shop here know us, and know we are here to help.” The store carries a variety of items, carefully selected by Redmond and Olander to represent both classic and whimsical. The desire to offer an eclectic variety of gifts, clothing and accessories has its roots in the store’s name. “Paisley is a fashion forward icon, but it also changes with the seaPhotos by Ann M. women in business sons,” Redmond said. “It is classic on the outside, and it changes with trends and seasons.” “We love to bring new things into the store,” Olander added. “We get very excited. We are always open for bringing in something new.” The store is now in its seventh year on Main Street in New Town. The business represents a venture for the women that happened at the ideal time. “We thought we had a natural knack for this type of business,” Olander said. “So we decided to open the gift store together. It was the right time in our lives.” The women have continued offering many of the same lines they opened the store with, but have diversified and expanded to meet customer need. “We get in new mer-
chandise every day,” Olander said. Their advice to others looking to start a business? “You have to have a clear goal of what you want,” Olander said. “You have to have tenacity,” Redmond said. “For anyone starting a business, you have to be willing to take a risk, believe in yourself and understand the company from top to bottom. You have to be involved in every aspect of your business.”

By Ann M. EÀmetz When Bob Legere was a high school student, he aappropriated some clay from the school art room and made a sculpture of Albert Einstein, who he admired. ma Legere was happy with the way the likeness turned out an and brought it home, displaying it in his room. Although he realized he had an acuity for the medium, he didn’t p pursue it. “Life took over,” Legere said in a recent interview “ at hi his James City County home. “I went into the Army for 24 years, I brought up a family and then went to Ferguson and worked for 16 years.” Fe But he never forgot that early work. After retiring five years ago, creativity beckoned again. “I thought back to that sculpture and I said to myself, ‘I would like to try that again.’” And he did. But Legere chose a different medium and subject matter closer to his heart. Using malleable wax instead of clay, Legere began a life- sized sculpture of his grandson, Chase. o “I got into the portrait sculptures of people I love and admire,” Legere said. As soon as one was finished, another was started. He has created about 10 works that run the gamut from his grandchildren to Leonardo Da V Vinci. He has turned tur a small space in his home into a workshop where he admi admits he can easily spend four or five at a time.

“It’s one of those hobbies you get lost in,” he said. “It gives you time to think about things. I think we all need something like that to soothe our souls. If you have a passion for something, it is easy to get lost in what you are doing.” “He will tell me that his is going down there to work for an hour,” Pam Legere, Bob’s wife, said with a laugh. “Then three or four hours later, he is still down there.” Many of Legere’s grandchildren live locally and help him create his masterpieces. Legere has been a guest at Matthew Whaley Elementary and Walnut Hills Preschool to talk about art and allow the kids to dabble in wax creations. Legere is never far from the workshop, and the ideas continually spring up in his mind. He has created likenesses of Abraham Lincoln, General George S. Patton, Leonardo Da Vinci, Sonic the Hedgehog and Minnie Mouse. He is working on a few pieces simultaneously including one of his granddaughter Chloe, and another of a warrior. “I have plenty of subject matter,” he said. A likeness of Abraham Lincoln graces one of the Legere’s upstairs bedrooms. Legere looked at it seriously and commented, “In my opinion, Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents of all time,” he said. Then without skipping a beat, with his infectious humor added, “If we put a wick in it, it would be one of the biggest candles you ever saw.”

A welcome Breeze has arrived By Ann M. EÀmetz Summer Breeze begins its 23rd year this month with a series of free concerts in Merchants Square. The events have become a hallmark summer tradition for locals and visitors. The series runs through the end of August and includes a lineup of great bands that begin at 7 p.m. each Wednesday. Merchants Square also offers kid’s activities prior to each concert. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m.
Here is the schedule for this month: July 2 — Independence Day Concert with the USAF Heritage of America Concert Band. American favorites and patriotic tunes in honor of Independence Day. July 9 —Rare Mixx— Music from the 60s to the present. July 16 —Kings of Swing-Dance band plays music of the 1970s-90s. July 23 —Karnivale- Five piece band that plays rock, dance, classics and country. July 30 —Slapnation-Party and dance band. The goal of the reunion is to bring people together. “We recognize that not everyone shared the same joys that many of us have experienced,” Skinner said. “The past was not perfect, today is not perfect but we can come together in 2014 and celebrate how far we have come to assure a better tomorrow.”
