Despite the summer heat, July is a great month to get outdoors and enjoy the many activities this region has to offer. It’s vacation time for families who visit historic sites from Jamestown to Yorktown. There are outdoor movies for the kids to enjoy, and festivals to take in. We also celebrate our nation’s independence on July 4, honoring the military who protect us overseas and at home, and the sacrifices their families make as well. Colonial Williamsburg offers a busy day of July Fourth activities for families culminating in a concert and spectacular fireworks display. There are similar activities along the Yorktown waterfront and throughout the summer at Busch Gardens. While you’re strolling along Duke of Gloucester Street, stop by Colonial Williamsburg’s new Market House that’s under construction. Writer Mark St. John Erickson looks at the history behind this important structure. Days can be spent at the beach or exploring, but the evenings offer their own attractions. Check out the several series of outdoor movies our area has to offer or head over to Yorktown for the annual shag dancing beach music concerts. In the evenings, there are ways to escape the July heat for the cool indoors. The Virginia Shakespeare Festival is offering two productions this summer in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall on the College of William and Mary campus. Over at the James York Playhouse, the Williamsburg Players are mounting a family favorite, “Oliver!” If the summer has got you dreaming of faraway places, the folks at our senior living communties have a solution. We profile two of the travel clubs that members participate in, with trips to places near and far. Finally, there are people and places you should know about. Chef Justin Addison is turning out innovative cuisine at Traditions restaurant in the Williamsburg Lodge. The Shoe Attic sells clothing designed by a local artist, and the Artcade Gallery will entice you with limited edition prints from Dr. Seuss and the Walt Disney studio. July Fourth is a day of history, concerts, fun and fireworks By David Nicholson Colonial Williamsburg celebrates July Fourth in a major way befitting its role in telling the story of our nation’s independence. There are also July Fourth celebrations to enjoy in Yorktown and at Busch Gardens. Here’s a look at the highlights: Colonial Williamsburg Throughout the day, the historic area offers a day of family fun, food and music. Events are open to the public unless indicated. Check for ticket availability, as some events sell out. 10 a.m. — Salute to the States. A special militia muster celebrates the anniversary of the birth of our nation with a salute to the 13 original states. The Fifes and Drums play, flags of each state are displayed, and muskets and cannon are fired. Market Square. 11 a.m. — Reading of the Declaration of Independence. The event recreates July 25, 1776, when the community gathered near the Courthouse steps to hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Only a few weeks earlier, Virginia's representatives adopted their own Declaration of Rights and Constitution for the new state. 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Colonial Faire. At three separate locations in and around Palace Green and Market Square, guests can enjoy 18th-century-inspired games such as tomahawk throw, three-legged race, hoops, tug of war and sack race. Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket required. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — “Freedom of the Camp.” Explore one of the quarter guard camps of the Virginia State Garrison Regiment and take part in drill practice or cannon firing. Watch soldiers go about their daily chores by cooking, playing field music, and preparing tents for shelter. Onlookers might be encouraged to enlist in the Virginia State Garrison Regiment and will be given instruction in the manual of arms by a drill sergeant. At the end of the day, new militia members can march in the Military Review. Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket required. 1 p.m. — Fifes and Drums March. The Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums march from the Capitol to the Palace Green. Capitol Circle. 20

1 p.m. — “Little Citizens.” At the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, families can take in a presentation by one of the Revolutionary City's Founding Fathers. Young people will learn the stories, ideas and struggles of a young nation through the eyes of those who helped build it. Museum admission required. 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. — “1776.” This American musical film showcases the days leading up to July 4, 1776. Continental Congressmen John Adams (William Daniels) and Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva) coerce Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard) into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic while they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialogue are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants. 142 min. Kimball Theatre, Merchants Square. Movie ticket required. 4 to 7:30 p.m. — Williamsburg Lodge Family Fourth of July Celebration. Celebrate the holiday with an evening of food, entertainment and fireworks. Enjoy children's games and “An American Original Buffet Dinner" served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with entertainment by The Jangling Reinharts. The Fifes and Drums escort guests to a reserved area on the Palace Green at 7:15 p.m. for the fireworks. Williamsburg Lodge, 310 S. England St. Event ticket required. 5 p.m. — Swinging on a Star: A Tribute to the Local USOs and the Troops of World War II. Guests can enjoy patriotic 4th of July entertainment seen by World War II servicemen and women at USO clubs here in Williamsburg. Soldiers overseas saw entertainers such as Bob Hope and Frances Langford, while those back home in Williamsburg saw shows like this one. Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Event ticket required. 7:30 p.m. — Concert by Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums. Market Square and Palace Green. 9:10 p.m. — Salute to a nation. Special tribute to the Armed Forces spanning 250 years. Following the fireworks, the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums march from m the Governor’s Palace to the Botetourtt Street. July Artfest at Art-cade Gallery features two American artistic icons: Walt Disney and Dr. Seuss By David Nicholson

Two iconic American artists, Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) and Walt Disney, are on display in July at The Art-cade Gallery in Williamsburg. “These two artists have shaped the conscience of America,” wrote gallery co-owner Mickey Sego. “We learned to read with the help of Geisel’s books. We learned to care about the world around us with the backing of the characters and films of Disney.” In this 16th annual mid-year art show, the gallery will feature limited edition prints from both 26

Dr. Seuss and the Disney studios. Sego said these reproductions “capture some of the most memorable moments and characters from literature and film.” The collection includes a newly released serigraph on deckled paper honoring the 60th anniversary of Horton, one of the most recognizable Seussian characters. “This large elephant discovers and nurtures a thriving city found on a tiny speck of dust and exhibits the principles of toleration, kindness and understanding,” wrote Sego. “The political moral throughout Seuss’ book ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ is

summarized in the concluding thought: A person's a person, no matter how small.” In addition to the Horton drawings, the gallery features other illustrations of the classic television adaptation of Horton by animator Chuck Jones, who collaborated with Seuss on the project. On the Disney side, several new art prints from the blockbuster film, “Frozen,” bring the cast alive in paintings about their adventures in Arendelle. The Disney display also includes signed, limited edition prints from other Disney classics, including “Mickey Mouse,” “Pinocchio,” “Snow White” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” According to Sego, Walt Disney once said: “Of all our inventions for mass communications, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.” Some years later Dr. Seuss added, “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope…” Art-cade Gallery also carries works by nationally know artists James Christensen (fantasy), Scott Gustafson (children’s tales), Morgan Weistling and Charles Wysocki (Americana) as well as vintage war and movie posters and art books. A Rebirth for

Market House

By Mark St. John Erickson Even in a place that’s been as carefully studied and probed as Colonial Williamsburg’s world-famous Historic Area, one major public landmark has been missing from the start. But with the raising of the timber-framed Market House, this sizable hole in the recreated 18th-century landscape of the Revolutionary City is finally closing. Funded by foundation trustee Forrest Mars, the $1 million project has engaged scores of architectural historians, archaeologists and historic tradesmen during the past two years as the location, design and materials for the resurrection of the 20-by-40-foot structure erected in 1757 have been refined and perfected. Many of them are acutely aware of their roles as the generation who will fulfill a dream that reaches all the way back to CW founder Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin, who campaigned for the reconstruction of one of the colonial 28

town's most visible economic, social and cultural hubs beginning in 1930-31. “This is a public building that’s been missing from Williamsburg’s landscape since 1790 — and it was an important part of the town’s life,” says master carpenter Garland Wood, leader of a team that has cut, fitted and marked hundreds of mortises and tenons over the past few weeks as part of the last stage of prefabricating the building’s timber frame. “So it’s pretty good to be part of bringing it back.” Search for clues Two decades after Goodwin first championed a reconstruction, the foundation’s Architect’s Office showed revived interest. But the idea that the Market House could be designed and built by following patterns found in other period structures didn’t go any further, CW architectural historian Carl Lounsbury says.

Among the problems that had to be overcome was lingering uncertainty over the building’s exact location on Market Square, where two archaeological digs had failed to find evidence confirming the site suggested by a 1780s map. No reliable clues regarding the Market House's dimensions seemed to survive either, though fragments of a foundation implied something similar in scale to other period market houses in the Chesapeake region. Archaeologists were not hopeful when -- after Mars’ gift in 2013 -- they began sifting through the soil again, looking for signs that might have been missed. But eventually they uncovered an expanse of earth that showed how the footprint of the Market House had been hemmed by a parallel pair of trenches erected to defend the Powder Magazine in 1775. “I didn’t think they’d even get that much,” Lounsbury says, describing how the new evidence helped zero in on the Market House’s dimensions. “And then they found this layer of sand that had been brought in to level the site for the brick pad that defined the market place.” Hunt for patterns For Lounsbury and his colleagues -- who’d worked out the basic design elements of the structure in the mid1980s -- the new information ended decades of waiting. Drawing upon an extensive study of similar American and English buildings from the era — including market houses in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Annapolis and Fredericksburg — they knew they were dealing with a relatively simple and highly standardized kind of structure, he says. Open spaces with brick floors, a central traffic corridor and overhanging eaves marked the Virginia examples, distinguishing them from the structures built in more temperate England. Many of the market houses boasted cupolas with bells, too, enabling their keepers -- as they still do on Wall Street today -- to signal to the continued on page 61

Lemon-fused olive oil can dress up a tossed salad. Blackberry-ginger balsamic vinegar will put a zing in a refreshing cocktail. When it comes to summer entertaining, or any time of the year, the Imperial Olive Tasting Room offers exciting new ways to flavor dishes. The Williamsburg store stocks dozens of extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars from different parts of the globe, and all are availab le for tasting. “You can be more creative with vegetables,” said Ann Kelly, who opened her shop two and a half years ago. “I boil beets, grate them, dress them with a raspberry balsamic vinegar, and you’re done. “Tuscan herb olive oil has great aroma and flavor,” she added. “It goes on pasta or veggies. I even drizzle a little on scrambled eggs. “It opens a new window on cooking.” When her husband retired from a job on Long Island, the couple relocated to Williamsburg where they had honeymooned and enjoyed visiting. Kelly’s love for her product began when she brought home a basil-infused olive oil one day. After comparing it

to the one she normally used, she determined, “there was no comparison to the supermarket brand.” Extra-virgin olive oils are produced by a simple pressing of the olives to extract the juice. Kelly sells it in its natural state — in mild, medium and robust strengths — as well as in a variety of fused and infused oils. Fused oils such as blood orange and lemon are produced by crushing the oil and fruit together. The infused oils such as basil and wild mushroom & sage are made by steeping the flavoring in the oil. Her best-seller is the Tuscan Herb oil. Like wine, oils reflect the soil and climate of a particular region. In the spring and summer months, they come from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece. In the fall and winter, they arrive from Australia, Chile and Peru. “We bottle every day so they’re always fresh,” said Kelly. “It’s a new experience for a lot of people. They tell me they’ll never go back.” Her balsamic vinegars come from Modena, Italy, and have been aged 18 years. With no sugars or glutens, they’re a healthy choice for salads and have become a trendy addition to cocktails. “In colonial times, people preserved the fruits of the season in vinegar,” she said. “Then they would add it to their drinks to make shrubs.” Kelly sells both dark and white vinegars in flavors such as espresso, raspberry, tarragon and Thai- lemongrass-mint. Donna Ross, who works in the store, loves it when customers share their recipes. She’s heard about sauteing mushrooms and onions in the store’s Wild Mushroom & Sage Olive Oil as a topping for pasta. Others have suggested using espresso balsamic vinegar on steaks and blood orange olive oil on toast. The nice thing about Imperial Olive is that all of these flavors are available for tasting.

“We wanted an atmosphere where people could walk in and try things,” said Kelly. “We love meeting and talking to people to find out how they are using the product. Chef Justin Addison relishes local foods around the world By David Nicholson

Many young guys who enlist in the Army stumble on a culinary career through kitchen duty. Chef Justin Addison, who oversees the Traditions restaurant in the Williamsburg Lodge, found his love of all things food in the markets and eateries of the Middle and Far East. Enlisting in the Army after high school — his mom served in the Army — he worked in special operations units from 2003 to 2007 with tours to Iraq, Thailand, Japan and Korea. There he combed the areas outside of the military bases, talking to locals and buying their food. “I believe culture is a blend of food, music and people,” said Addison. “I fell in love with food over there. “They used to call me the chow hound because no matter where I went I was interested in food,” he said. “I would go into the local stores and spend $20. I would support the people by buying food. It would make their day.” Returning to his home base in New England — Addison was born in Kittery, Maine — he enrolled in a branch of the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Dover, N.H. An externship brought him to Colonial Williamsburg in 2008, and he never left. “I saw the opportunity for growth here,” said Ad-

dison. “Chef Rhys (Lewis) and Chef Anthony (Frank) guided me, not just in culinary but in a lot of things. I learned to communiucate in a different way.” At age 30, he’s in charge of a bustling Colonial Williamsburg restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner including a popular Friday night seafood buffet. His duties extend to the hotel’s lounge and 24-hour room service. Recently, the restaurant underwent a renovation that brought a new name and menu. Addison’s goal was to embrace the “farm to fork” movement by connecting with nearby farms to bring his customers locally produced meats and produce. “I traveled to all the local farms in North Carolina and (Virginia’s) Southampton County,” said Addison. He now receives pork and lamb from Autumn Olive Farms in the Shenandoah Valley and gets some of his produce from Manakintowne Specialty Growers in Powhatan. Even more exciting for Addison is making use of the 900 acres of gardens scattered around Colonial Williamsburg. In the past the produce produced there was given away or used as compost. Now, “we’ve taken that product and we serve it to our guests,” he said proudly. “That’s how people were growing and eating food back then.” WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JULY 2015

Retirement travel clubs

From as far away as Europe to closer at home in Charlottesville, the Colonial Heritage Travel Club explores the world with friends and companions. “Everybody in the community is eligible to participate,” said Roger Heer, travel club co-leader at this Williamsburg senior living facility. “Trips are open to persons outside of our community as well.” At Ford’s Colony, more than 300 residents participate in the community’s travel club. Activities include trips to local dinner theaters, concerts and plays as well as trips abroad to Europe and Israel. “We organize at least one trip a month except during the summer,” said Al Ashley, president of the Ford’s Colony club. Founded six years ago, the Colonial Heritage club offers several day excursions and an international trip each year. Locally, the members have visited Charlottesville and Richmond. An upcoming trip to Murfreesboro, N.C., at Christmastime is sold out. In the spring, 28 members traveled to Italy where they visited Rome, Sorrento, Assisi, Venice, and Florence. “Great weather, great food, great travelers made for a fun trip,” wrote Heer. “It’s a lot more fun traveling with a group.” Previous international trips, usually two weeks long, included Great Britain in 2014 and Ireland the

year before. A trip to Germany is on the books for June 2016, and reservations are now being accepted. A six-member committee in the club receives suggestions for future trips. Also in the past, surveys have been sent out to gather information. In addition to its trip schedule, the Ford’s Colony club holds monthly meetings with guest speakers. At a recent meeting, one of the members reported on a wedding she attended in India. Dues are $7.50 annually, and 25 percent of the membership can come from outside Ford’s Colony. The group has taken in shows at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and on Broadway. On another excursion, they visited the mansions of New York’s Hudson Valley and the Tanglewood Music Center in western Massachusets. International travel has included tips to Germany, Italy, France and Israel. “We vary our entertainment and our shows,” said Ashley. “We really span the globe.” Want to go? Music fills the Summer Breeze in concerts on Merchants Square By David Nicholson

Summer Breeze means summer music each week during July and August at Merchants Square in Colonial Williamsburg. The annual concert series will kick off on July 1 with the popular Independence Day Concert featuring the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band from 7 to 8:15 p.m. The series will run each Wednesday through Aug. 26. “Shagging on the Riverwalk,” the beach music concert series, celebrates its 10th season this summer on the Yorktown riverfront. The popular series began in June and continues for four Thursdays this month on July 9, 16, 23 and 30. Location is the performance stage at Riverwalk Landing. Gail Whittaker, public information coordinator for York County, says the series started the same year Riverwalk Landing opened. If the weather cooperates, as many as 1,000 to 1,500 people come out. “It’s a good mix,” she says. “It’s family-friendly so parents come out with their children. Folks who have been on the beach for several hours cover up and stay for the event.” Hours are 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Food is available for purchase, and free parking is available at several designated public parking lots throughout Yorktown. The area’s top bands play a variety of beach favorites, oldies and Motown. Peanuts and ham biscuits Surry celebrates with annual festival By David Nicholson

The annual Pork, Peanut & Pine Festival celebrates three of Surry County’s agricultural products and provides a weekend of fun for residents and visitors. This year’s 40th anniversary festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday July 18-19 at Chippokes Plantation State Park off Route 10 in Surry. Numerous Virginia food vendors will be on hand to serve up pork barbecue, fried pork rinds, grilled pork chops, sausage, ham biscuits, peanut pie and peanut brittle. The weekend also includes the sixth annual barbecue cookoff, a parade (12:30 p.m. Saturday) and creations by more than 200 artists and craftsmen. There are lots of activities for kids as well.

The festival, parking and tram rides are included in the $5 admission price. Youths age 10 and under are admitted free.

Summer brings movie viewing outdoors By Mike Holtzclaw

One of the joys of spring and summer is the opportunity to see movies outdoors under an evening sky with a gentle breeze blowing. The inflatable screens aren't quite as great as the state-of-the-art technology you'll find in your local cineplex. But you still get to enjoy a cool flick while sitting in a lawn chair or on a blanket in the grass. It's the movie experience, picnic-style — and in most cases totally free — that matters. Here is a look at the schedules for the local outdoor movie series. All events are free unless otherwise noted. surrounding town the opening and closing of the market. “In the end you see patterns emerge -- and you start to feel comfortable when you stop coming across things that are new or surprising,” he said. “So now that we’ve got the building’s location and size, we’ve been able to go back and recreate a market house that would not look out of place in 18th-century Virginia or Anglo-America. It might not be exactly right, but anybody from the period would recognize it as a market house.” Not everybody agrees with CW’s embrace of such a straight-forward, utilitarian structure. Williamsburg resident John Millar -- who built and occupies a reproduction of a 1700s Rhode Island house located near the Historic Area -- has been a vocal critic for years, arguing in favor of the more elaborate arcaded structure found in a late-1780s view of Williamsburg drawn by visiting German soldier Georg Daniel Flohr. As with many of Flohr’s illustrations, however, there are numerous discrepancies between his depictions and the actual buildings, Lounsbury says, pointing to a copy of the Williamsburg view. “Everything here is in the right order -- but it’s all too elaborate and too fancy. The houses are all three stories -- making them all too tall. The courthouse has a tower that never existed,” he said. “It doesn’t look like Williamsburg. It looks like Heidelberg.” Built by hand Despite its relatively simple and utilitarian character, the Market House would have been well-built, Lounsbury says. Its unusually wide, overhanging eaves would have required a robust and relatively elaborate system of roof trusses in order to provide adequate support for all that extra weight. That’s why Wood and his carpenters have studied several surviving

Historic Area examples as they’ve prefabricated a series of kingposts that will anchor the roof to the frame. They’ve also devoted thousands of man-hours to cutting hundreds of mortises and tenons and checking their fit -- not to mention cutting and shaping an estimated 15,000 white cedar shingles. “This is going to be a high-dollar roof -- as fancy as carpenters knew how to build,” Wood says. “And we want to make sure it will last.”

The Historic Area’s brickmakers, joiners and blacksmiths have made substantial contributions to the project, too, coming together to furnish the bricks, windows and hardware just as their colonial forebears did 258 years ago. “Everything above ground will be built exactly the same way as the original,” says Director of Historic Architectural Resources Matt Webster. “This is an amazing project for us. We went all out.”

The Shoe Attic is a unique, chic, shopping boutique By Adrienne Mayfield

Don’t let the name The Shoe Attic deceive you – there’s more than swag for your feet at this treasure trove boutique. From panda pumps and zebra inspired dresses, to hand-sewn skirts and jewelry bearing butterflies and old portraits, The Shoe Attic has pieces to quirk up even the simplest style. There’s not necessarily a rhyme or reason to the selection, but the styles reflect spirited shop owner Brittany Rolston and her mother, who she seeks advice from when ordering inventory from brands like Irregular Choice, Mink Pink and Blind Bella. “The fashion and style (of the store) changes as I grow,” said Rolston, now 30. “It’ll always be an evolving process.” The Shoe Attic also offers 50s inspired hand-sewn skirts by Williamsburg’s Tabitha Sewer. Rolston saw one of Sewer’s high-waisted skirts and had to have it — but she couldn’t have just one and asked Sewer to sell them at the shop. Sewer, who is currently working on a jewel-toned collection for the fall, described The Shoe Attic’s selection as fun, flirty and eccentric. “It’s unexpected in Williamsburg,” she said. The clothing and jewelry are eclectic, but the shoes are Rolston’s favorite part and dominate most of the small shop’s space. Rolston’s shoe obsession started in college when she realized she could make simple outfits unique with the right kicks. She still has her first pair of expensive shoes — blue, satin Steve Maddens with a 5-inch platform heel — although they no longer fit her feet. “They make you happy,” Rolston said. “You don’t have to fit in a size zero, and you can wear amazing shoes. You wear cool shoes, and it changes the whole way you walk and your attitude.” Rolston doesn’t order duplicates of many pieces, so they are not guaranteed to be in stock in specific sizes. But that’s half of the thrill of the retail hunt, one that adds to the upscale thrift store feel of The Shoe Attic. Coming into the store should feel like walking into a friend's house, Rolston said. And walking in does 62

feel like entering a diva’s dream closet, complete with plush couches and a vintage doll house turned shoe display in one of the windows. Rolston’s passion for the shop is deeply rooted in satisfying the Williamsburg community. She enjoys getting to know her clientele. The Shoe Attic doesn’t cater to any specific age, she said, and has customers ranging in age from 8 to 68. Customer Kathleen Stanco, 67, said she loves shopping at The Shoe Attic because she can find a complete outfit for any event. “She has a unique, chic, shopping boutique where a customer can go in, and get dressed head to toe, and out the door for fun,” Stanco said. Rolston sells her clothing online, and said she has thought about expanding her store to other college towns in Virginia. She doesn’t think she’ll ever open a store outside of the state, mainly because she wants to maintain the family feeling of the original store wherever she goes. “I want it to feel like family,” Rolston said. “I think a lot of people who come here come to talk, come to hang out.
