History abounds year-round in Williamsburg, but it takes even more of a spotlight during America’s birthday month. In this issue, read about the role the Historic Triangle played in American Independence and, while you’re at it, plan how you’ll celebrate the Fourth. From fireworks over the York River to fireworks over the Revolutionary City, there’s plenty to see and do. Summer, and July especially, often brings cookouts to mind. So, this month we track down the perfect All-American plate – hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pie, you name it. If you don’t feel like grilling in your backyard, head over to Pierce’s Pitt, also detailed in this month’s issue. It’s one of the best places in the region for barbeque. Blue Talon Bistro is another local draw in the food realm, but every summer, the restaurant also presents an outdoor movie series. It’s one of many ways to spend an evening outdoors this month, including a summer concert series outside Grace Episcopal Church and the Summer Breeze concerts in Merchants Square. There are some unique ways to spend time indoors this month, too. A horror convention for a good cause, Scares That Care Weekend returns to the DoubleTree by Hilton July 22-24. And on a lighter note, Art-cade Gallery’s annual summer art show features reproductions from the Disney Fine Art collection; Artcade is the only authorized Disney Fine Art gallery in the area.

Fireworks celebrate the Fourth By Heather Bridges When celebrating Independence Day, fireworks immediately come to mind. And while there are plenty of ways to get your fireworks fix, the Historic Triangle offers a variety of other ways to celebrate the Fourth, from an 8K run to Fifes and Drums performances. Here are some ideas. Busch Gardens Spend the day wandering country to country at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, followed by an evening spent watching fireworks. Appealing to sight and sound, the theme park pairs its annual fireworks display with original soundscapes. The display will repeat each night, July 2-4. Park-goers can also catch country music artist Lee Greenwood on stage the evening of July 4. Busch Gardens is open from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. For more information, visit seaworldparks.com/buschgardens-williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg There’s nothing quite like celebrating the birth of America in a place steeped with American History. In Colonial Williamsburg, the Independence Day celebrations start bright and early, continuing until the last firework fades from the night sky. At 10 a.m., the festivity begins behind the Courthouse, with a special militia muster saluting the 13 original stages. In addition to the firing of muskets and cannons, the Fifes and Drums will play and the state flags will be on display. Though outdoor options abound, guests can also step indoors for dinner or a musical performance. At 4 p.m., check out “I Hear America Singing,” a performance by the Runaway String Band. With banjo,
mandolin, guitar and bass, the band brings life to the traditional music of America. They’ll perform in Hennage Auditorium. The day concludes at 9:15 p.m. with a grand fireworks display, visible from Market Square and Palace Green. At evening’s end, the Fifes and Drums will march down Duke of Gloucester Street, from Palace Green to Botetourt Street. For more information, visit colonialwilliamsburg. com or call 888-965-7254. Yorktown For another celebration surrounded by history, head to historic Yorktown. At 8 a.m., the day begins with the Yorktown Independence Day 8K run and 5K walk through Yorktown Battlefield. Registration begins 6:30 a.m. at York High School. A patriotic parade begins at 9 a.m., tracing Water and Main Streets and accompanied by music from the U.S. Coast Guard Band. The evening event kicks off at 7 p.m. with a bellringing ceremony at Riverwalk Landing, followed by a performance from the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command Brass Band. Lastly, watch a fireworks show over the York River starting at 9:15 p.m. On both July 3 and 4, Yorktown Victory Center’s Liberty Celebration will complement the events in historic Yorktown on July 4. Visitors can participate in military exercises, watch tactical drills and learn more about experiences during the Revolutionary War from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on both days. The Fifes and Drums of York Town will also perform, at 2:30 p.m. on July 3 and 11 a.m. on July 4. Art-cade Gallery presents Disney art for all ages By Heather Bridges Step into the beloved world of Walt Disney at Art-cade Gallery’s 16th annual summer art show. Throughout July, the gallery will showcase around 40 licensed reproductions from the Disney Fine Art collection – and a few originals, too. The paintings bring life to classic Disney characters and moments, such as “The Red Queen” from Alice in Wonderland, “Mickey’s Dream” from Fantasia or “Serenade for a Lady” from Lady and the Tramp, but they do so in unexpected ways. Rather than a recreation of a particular animation cel, each work of art is an interpretation. The artists incorporate the movie’s whole spirit, said gallery coowner Mickey Sego. Even more, Art-cade Gallery is the only authorized Disney Fine Art gallery in Southeastern Virginia, Sego said. The prints displayed in the gallery – each signed and numbered -- are the same prints found at Disney Land and Disney World. The gallery invites the community, people of all ages, to experience the summer show. Disney stories affect everybody, Sego said, children and parents alike. Each print brings life to a different story, and each story brings life to different memories. 12

The gallery is an authorized dealer of the Art of Dr. Seuss, including limited edition prints of both his book illustrations and “Secret Art,” as well as replicas of his “unorthodox taxidermy” and sculptures. Other rare finds include limited edition Harry Potter prints, original comics and sports cartoons, vintage posters and work by nationally known artists, such as James Christensen and Charles Wysocki.

Why we celebrate By Steve Vaughan Aside from Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was actually signed, no place has more reason to celebrate the 4th of July than the Historic Triangle, where the battle for American independence was won and where, arguably, it began. Patrick Henry had come close to urging American independence in a 1765 speech against the Stamp Act at the Colonial Capitol in Williamsburg. In his famous “Give me liberty or give me death” address to the Second Virginia Convention at St. John’s Church in Richmond on March 20, 1775, he made the call for independence explicit. On May 15, 1776 the House of Burgesses unanimously adopted Virginia's Resolution for Independence, among the first colonies to do so, and called for the other colonies to declare their independence, which they did at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in July of that year. On January 7, 1776 Richard Henry Lee, a Virginian, made the motion at the Second continental Congress in Philadelphia that lead to the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson, a Virginian and an alumnus of the College of William and Mary was chosen by John Adams to draft the Declaration in part due to his
talent as a writer and also because he was a Virginian. Virginia was, at that time, the largest and wealthiest of the colonies and its support was considered crucial by advocates for independence. Adams had been the second choice as writer and deferred to Jefferson. “Reason first—You are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear at the head of this business. Reason second—I am obnoxious, suspected and unpopular. You are very much otherwise. Reason third—You can write ten times better than I can,” Adams told Jefferson. After considerable debate and revision, the Continental Congress passed the Declaration of Independence, which was signed on July 4, 1776. On July 26 1776, the Virginia Gazette became what many believe to be the first newspaper outside Philadelphia to publish the full text of the Declaration. The Yorktown Battlefield is one of the best known Revolutionary War sites. It encompasses the area where a combined French and American army under Washington pinned down and besieged a British force under Cornwallis, forcing his surrender on Oct. 19, 1781. The outcome secured American independence from Britain, according to Jamestown-Yorktown

Foundation historian Edward Ayres in “How the Allied Victory at Yorktown Won American Independence.” According to Ayres, on Oct. 20, 1781, the day after 7,000 British and German soldiers surrendered at Yorktown, the Marquis de Lafayette wrote home to France exulting “the play is over … the fifth act has just ended.” Yorktown’s own General Thomas Nelson was more cautious, when writing to Virginia’s delegation in the Continental Congress. “This Blow, I think must be a decisive one, it being out of the Power of G. B. [Great Britain] to replace such a Number of good Troops.” The lead up to the Siege at Yorktown included the Battle of Greenfields and a brief occupation of the City of Williamsburg by British troops under Benedict Arnold.

Chickahominy Riverfront Park will host the Revolution3 Triathlon series stop in Williamsburg July 10, with the first wave of athletes expected to dive in at 6:45 a.m. The Williamsburg edition will feature half, Olympic, aquabike, and relay versions as well as one transition area located at the park before the swim takes place in the Chickahominy River. Competitors will start at the park pier and after exiting the water, it is on to Route 5 for a roll over the Judith Steward Dresser Memorial Bridge for the bike ride. By Ryan McKinnon Whether you are a spandex-clad weekend warrior or are just learning to ride without training wheels, the Park to Park Bicycle Tour, held on July 23 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., has a ride to match your ability and stamina. The annual day of biking offers 50-mile, 30mile and 15-mile trips, as well as a family option of any length. Bikers will travel on roads in James City County and on the Virginia Capital Trail, a paved path winding along the Route 5 corridor. Riders can cool off in the pool and enjoy lunch at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park at the end of their ride. And those who opt for the 50-mile ride will visit Mid County Park, Powhatan Creek Trail, Freedom Park, Little Creek Reservoir Park and Upper County Park. The cost of the trip includes refreshments, admission to the pools, maps, support vehicles and lunch. The nine-performance concert series will be held in the church’s historic grave yard, which is more than 300 years old and the final resting place of Declaration of Independence signer Thomas Nelson Jr. , Powell said. “People think it’s a little odd to be playing (music) in a cemetery, but it’s not. Surry to celebrate pork, peanuts and pine By Steve Vaughan On the weekend of July 16-17, Surry will celebrate three things near and dear to the hearts of many Virginians: pork, peanuts and pine. The 41st edition of the Pork, Peanut & Pine Festival will be held at Chippokes Plantation State Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. “You will find peanuts in all forms. There will be a BBQ Cook-off. Possibly one of the BBQ makers will share his/her secrets.,” according to the event’s website. “There will also be wood carving demonstrations and farming exhibits. You may also visit with a wonderful mamma sow and her piglets.” There will also be entertainment throughout the weekend. But one thing that is definitely scheduled is a parade Saturday afternoon. “Antique cars, tractors, patriotic groups and even a horse-drawn carriage will take you back to earlier
days. Our parade is much like that from county fairs across the U.S. Mr. & Miss Peanut will be featured,” according to organizers. Childrens activities are featured, including a petting zoo, rock climbing wall, inflatable slide face painting and pony rides. Admission is $5 per person. Photos by Jonathon Gruenke

All-American favorites have a whole new taste By Brandy Centolanza Cookout season is upon us, and it doesn’t get any more American than serving up a juicy burger or hot dog in the backyard. Burgers are a must-have for any outdoor potluck or picnic, and local professionals offer some ideas on how to make the most of the cooking – and eating – opportunity. Craft 31, which opened in late May on Strawberry Plains Road and specializes in gourmet burgers, uses “a unique blend of sirloin, brisket and short rib meat, and a hot cast iron to sear the beef on the outside,” says Jessica Smith, director of sales and market30

ing for the restaurant. Beyond beef, burger options include turkey, chicken, salmon or veggie patties. “Salmon is extremely popular right now,” shares Mickey Chohany, who co-owns Second Street An American Bistro with his brother, John. Chohany says when preparing a burger, “Start off with fresh ingredients. You want good core products, and that also includes good cooking products and equipment.” When it comes to toppings for your burger, Smith advises, “Think outside the box. Sure, everybody’s had lettuce, tomato and onion with ketchup and mayo, but it's also fun to incorporate other styles
of cuisine in your burger compilation. My favorite is a Mexican green chile burger with pico de gallo and white cheese sauce.” Topping possibilities are endless. Try something simple like cheddar cheese and bacon; caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, and Swiss cheese; or go Texas-style with steak sauce, chopped green chiles, chopped onion, guacamole and cheese. You can also do a burger topped with barbeque sauce and coleslaw. Go Greek with toppings such as Greek yogurt, sliced red onions, sliced cucumbers, and feta cheese; Caribbean with jerk seasoning and mango salsa; Italian with sliced tomato, fresh mozzarella, and a drizzle of Balsamic vinegar; or be bold and try an Australianstyle burger with egg, bacon, cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, beet, and a pineapple ring. Chohany suggests fried red onion straws, relish, chutney, salsa, kimchi, chow chow mix, or a Cajun remoulade mayonnaise. “At our restaurant, we like to take something ordinary, and give it an extraordinary culinary spin,” Chohany says. “At home, I like to open up the fridge, look around, and be inspired.” Prefer a hot dog? You can think beyond ketchup and mustard with those as well. “The key to a good dog is quality beef in a quality bun,” says Sharon Scruggs, who co-owns Retro’s Good Eats on Prince George Street with her husband, Billy. “Our most interesting toppings are our sweet potato mustard and blue cheese cole slaw. They make for a surprisingly tasty combo.” Various American cities offer up their unique spins on hot dogs. Take a cue from New York and add spicy mustard and sauerkraut or onions sautéed in tomato paste; or, Kansas City, melted cheese caraway, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing; Chicago, tomato, pickle, hot peppers, sweet onion, and relish; Detroit, chili, cheddar cheese, and raw onion; or San Francisco, mayonnaise, pickles, shallots, tomatoes, and shredded lettuce. In Phoenix, hot dogs are first wrapped in bacon and then topped with pinto beans, onion, mustard, mayo, chopped tomatoes, and jalapenos. And what about sides? “Tots are hot,” shares Smith.
Chohany suggests jazzing up those tater tots by serving them as a loaded potato tot, or even using a sweet potato tot. Chohany also prefers gourmet pasta salads with orzo or couscous and asparagus, artichokes, olives, and feta; a quinoa and kale salad; or a unique spin on macaroni and cheese, another popular American comfort food dish. “I like to do something totally unexpected or totally different,” says Chohany, who also recommends serving up various versions of a dish depending on the crowd, whether or not children are in attendance, or if there is someone with specific dietary needs. But even the most delectable meal must come to an end, and that means dessert. America’s dessert icon, the apple pie, also can be spiffed up. Consider giving everyone’s favorite classic pie with apples and cinnamon a twist by trying a saltedcaramel apple pie, cheddar apple, apple pie with raisins, or a spiced bourbon apple pie. BBQ sauce a family tradition at Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que By Adrienne Mayfield Brisket, smoked chicken and Brunswick stew are on the menu at Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que – but at the heart of the family restaurant is tender, pulled-pork sandwiches and a barbeque sauce recipe passed down through generations. “It’s all in the sauce,” restaurant owner Jay Pierce said, adding that the barbeque sauce is based off of his grandmother’s recipe with a little tweaking from his father, Doc. “It’s not so much what he added as what he didn’t add,” Jay Pierce said. “It’s a more simplistic sauce.” Whether it’s Doc’s original barbeque sauce – fullflavored with Tennessee tang -- or Doc’s barbeque sauce flavored with honey and heat, it’s all delicious on a Boston butt, pulled-pork sandwich, Jay Pierce said. Jay Pierce’s parents, Doc and Verdie, opened Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que in 1971. The couple envisioned a simple drive-in restaurant that would provide a future for their 15-year-old son. “My mother would always say, ‘You’ve got to put some love in (food),’” Pierce said, adding that his parents were fantastic cooks who loved to play in the kitchen. Time has changed the restaurant the couple sketched on a piece of notebook paper at their kitchen table 45 years ago. New items have been added to
the menu – like brisket and the popular, jumbo, “J.C. Special” pulled-pork sandwich. But key elements have remained unchanged – namely the fresh ground beef, crinkle-cut fries, shaved ice and coleslaw. The restaurant has grown to include dining rooms and patio seating, but Pierce’s employees still take the time to cook made-from-scratch sides like macaroni and cheese, collard greens and cornbread. The restaurant also smokes all meats in the on-site pit, including pork, chicken and turkey. Pierce’s parents died years ago, but he still keeps the restaurant in the family way with menu items named after his mother and father. The “Verdie Special” comes with a half-pint of Brunswick stew and cornbread, while “Doc’s Family Special,” includes two pounds of pork or chicken barbeque, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, rolls and dessert. Pierce also supports local farmers, buying produce from the region like Hanover County tomatoes, Vidalia onions from the James City Lion’s Club and collard greens from North Carolina. “When produce comes in from the farm, so do we,” Pierce said. But the most delicious thing on the menu is the pride Pierce takes in carrying on his family legacy of fresh barbeque. “Barbeque is a very personal thing,” Pierce said. “There’s nothing on the menu I’m not proud of.” Photo by Adrienne Mayfield

The Blue Talon Bistro Sunday summer outdoor movie events on Prince George Street often are more than just film screenings or a night out at the movies. Take the scheduled July 10 showing of “Elf” that is part of a “Christmas in July” theme that will feature a Toys for Tots drive and an appearance from Old Saint Nicholas, himself. The first 100 children that donate a toy will receive a goody bag courtesy of Wythe Candy and Gourmet Shop. Viewers can also enjoy various contests and games, like cornhole. “It is a lot of fun,” Bistro manager Geri Butler said. “There is a lot to do. The street is shut down around
6 in the evening and people park their chairs and come back around 8 and enjoy the movie. It’s a huge turnout and everyone has lots of fun.” The average turnout last year was about 250. This is the ninth season of the free movie series, the brainchild of Blue Talon chef David Everett, and it runs from June 19-Sept. 4. July’s offerings include: July 3, “Minions”; July 10, “Elf”; July 18, “Maleficent”; July 24, “The Good Dinosaur”; and July 31, “Inside Out.” On deck in August and September are Aug. 7, “Goose Bumps”; Aug. 14, “Zootopia”; Aug. 21, “Quiet Man”; Aug. 28, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”; and Sept. 4, “Back to the Future.”

Open studio gives inner artist a chance to blossom By: Adrienne Mayfield Folks at the Colonial Folk Art Studio and Gallery are helping people in the Historic Triangle tap into their inner artist. “I enjoy the creativity people have, and sometimes they don’t know they have it. I think that’s one of the beauties of art,” said studio owner Davie Burgdorf. The studio offers on-demand art classes in mixed-media painting, ceramics and potter’s wheel for students at every skill level. Classes are available for up to 10 people Tuesday through Sunday, Burgdorf said. The studio serves people who have never touched a paint brush or a piece of clay, as well as those who have been creating art for a while but want to pick up a new skill, Burgdorf said. “You never can assume just by looking at somebody what they are capable of doing,” he added. Practicing artists can also reserve studio space during business hours, Burgdorf said. 40

The studio is a good place for artistic exploration, and the two-hour classes are perfect for people who need creativity break during the day, Burgdorf said. “It’s so much fun to watch (students) evolve and develop,” Burgdorf said. “They say the definition of play is when you lose track of time.

Summer nights are made for outdoor music and dancing By Austin Bogues There’s plenty in the way of outdoor activity throughout July. 2nd Sundays festival in Williamsburg is in full swing through December. The event features live art exhibits, local musicians and activities along the 400 and 500 block of Pringe George Street near N. Boundary in downtown. For more information on 2nd Sundays, visit www.2ndsundayswilliamsburg. com/contact/. On July 16 the monthly Art in the Burg fair will take place. The fair has local artists and strives to promote the Williamsburg Arts District, according to Kelsey Diehl, who helps organize the event. The arts district stretches toward the end of Richmond Road from the Monticello Shopping Center to near the campus of William and Mary. “Any artist can participate for $10 per day, they get a square in the parking lot and they can put up a tent. We also have tents available,” Diehl said. Shagging on the Riverwalk beach music concert series on Riverwalk Landing in Historic Yorktown has been going strong for 10 years. with local acts playing a variety of music like beach songs, oldies and Motown. The Thursday night concerts run from 6:30-9:30. The Colonial Shag Club offers shag lessons, demonstrations on what organizers have dubbed as one of the area’s largest outdoor dancefloors. The concerts are free and open to the public and food will be available for purchase. Parking is available nearby and guests can

Bob’s Upholstery’s changes keep pace with customer interests By Brandy Centolanza Bob’s Upholstery has been a staple in Williamsburg for more than 40 years, and owner Debra Wood Venne is in the process of a shop facelift as well as a business expansion. Venne bought Bob’s Upholstery shortly after original owner Bob Lockhart passed away back in 2001. The upholstery workroom operates from the basement of the building on Second Street, while upstairs, Venne, a fabric specialist who has been sewing since childhood, has started the fabric retail shop Savvy Swatch. Venne, along with her employees, works with customers on reupholstering furniture in homes and offices as well as working on vehicles and boats. The business also does window treatments of all kinds, and carries rugs, lighting, pillows and other accessories 42

for renovating and redecorating. Venne works closely with her clients to, as she says, “create a fresh, sophisticated, and comfortable design plan with their style in mind.” Her goal is to keep her customers satisfied, whether they are locals who visit her shop routinely or tourists who stumble upon it while on vacation. “Happy customers are the most rewarding aspect of this job,” Venne says. It was a job that almost wasn’t, at least for a while. Venne cut back on her time at Bob’s Upholstery following the births of her children as well as bouts with cancer. Just a few years ago, healthier and with her children older, Venne decided to return to the business full force, adding on Savvy Swatch, where patrons can come in and purchase quality fabric at discounted prices. Since opening Savvy Swatch, business has “ex-
ploded,” Venne says. Individuals have traveled from Richmond, Smithfield, and Kilmarnock to seek her services, she said, and designers from Michigan, Texas, and other states have connected with her about collaborations. Venne has a dozen employees on staff helping her at Bob’s Upholstery and Savvy Swatch, and she recently hired an apprentice. “Without them, this business wouldn’t exist,” she points out. “This is a dying art, and to find people who can do this so well is very difficult. We are pretty particular, and pride ourselves on having a product leave this store looking better than new. We strive for that.” Venne has spent the past few months renovating both the interior and exterior of her building to attract additional clientele as well as expand Savvy Swatch’s inventory. Kate Spade fabrics will soon be available for purchase. By the end of the summer, she hopes to start selling her fabrics and other products online, and is also toying with the idea of starting her own furniture line. “I want to keep my products fresh, and always turning over,” she says. “I am in this business to be in it.”

Scared, for a good cause By Austin Bogues For the second straight year, Scares that Care, a comic-con that helps raise money for charitable

causes, will return to Williamsburg. This year’s dates are July 22-24. Last year’s convention brought more than 2,000 attendees to the Double Tree Inn by Hilton near
Kingsmill., many dressed in costumes from their favorite movie, video game or comic book. In addition to a range of cultclassic movie stars and authors, this year the event will feature a 5K run for participants. Joe Ripple, founder and CEO of the charity, and promoter of the convention, said the 5K should add a different element to this year’s convention. “We’re just trying to appeal to a different demographic that may or may not like horror movies but may enjoy exercise,” Ripple said. “They can choose to run in costume if they want, we will have characters dressed up along the route,” he said. This year the foundation will help three families in need, including one from Williamsburg and two others in Virginia Beach. Expect more celebrity guests on hand as well as authors to sign books. “We have two of the actors from the X-Files that are going to be there Mitch Pellegi and William B. Davis,” Ripple said. Scares that Care, along with MarsCon and RavenCon have made Williamsburg a popular destination during the past year for sci-fi lovers. “We want to do whatever we can do to help Williamsburg attract more attendees. That way the whole town benefits,” Ripple said.
