Looking good at Salon 109 Salon 109 in the Colony Square Shopping Center isn’t just a place to go for a great hair style. The staff is on hand to transform your beauty needs from dream to reality. Whether you need a haircut, blow dry, hair color or manicure, the friendly and experienced staff of Salon 109 is ready to help. Not only do they have the benefit of years of experience supplied by a knowledgeable staff, customers feel part of the family. “Our customers love to come in,” said Teresa Hedrick, salon owner. “I had one lady who came in this week who used to live in Charleston. She said ‘This is the most fun shop I have ever been in my life. You are always having fun in here and you make the customers laugh.’” The positive energy is one of the most distinctive aspects of the salon, which has been in the same location for more than three decades. Hedrick bought the business seven years ago, after moving her from Northern Virginia. She thought the salon was the ideal match.

“I really like the location, it very convenient,” she said. “And Williamsburg is a great place, it is beautiful and has so much history to offer.” Hedrick has been in the beauty business for nearly 40 years. Her staff includes 12 stylists, three of whom have owned their own salons in the past. For Hedrick, making the customers feel good about themselves provides her with satisfaction. “I like the freedom to design their hair or change the color and make them look their best,” she said. Those who have faced the challenges of cancer or other illnesses can visit the shop for help. “We work with people who have had cancer who have lost their hair to help them get their hair back in good condition and back to a style,” she said. “That is very important for someone who has had cancer and their hair is coming back in.” Over the course of three decades, styles and colors have changed but the need for quality hair care has stayed constant. Hedrick said there are customers who frequent the shop weekly. “At least seventy-five percent of our business are weekly customers,” she said. “A lot of them have been coming to the shop for twenty or twenty five years.” On the flip side, the shop sees its share of out-of-town visitors. “We get a lot of tourists who come in because they see the magazine in the hotel,” she said. “And they always leave very happy.” –Ann Efimetz

Gifts for Dad Don’t forget Dad this Father’s Day which is Sunday, June 16. The celebration of Father’s Day began with the efforts of Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., According the The U.S. Census Bureau, Dodd thought of the idea while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. A day in June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration on d June 19, 1910. It was proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of Smart’s birth. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent. Times in the Square Merchants Square celebrates 85 years The Summer Breeze Concert Series gets an earlier start this year, June 19. That’s to help observe the year long celebration of Merchants Square. The dining, shopping and cultural hub is observing its 85th anniversary with a celebration that will culminate with a fall birthday bash. Ed Chappell, architectural historian for Colonial Williamsburg, has decades of memories of the square and spoke recently about its storied past and its present influence on locals and visitors. Merchants Square is one of the first planned shopping areas in the country. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by Perry, Shaw & Hepburn of Boston, the original idea for the square was 40

for it to complement the Historic Area, but not copy it. “It has always been intended for retail, dining and banking,” Chappell said. “It is a place for both townspeople and visitors. It is sort of the Main Street of Williamsburg.” The area is steeped in history. The inception of the square was in 1927 when John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and the Reverend W.A.R. Goodwin were planning the restoration of the Historic Area. They wanted shops and other small businesses which were located closely to move into a shopping district in order to make way for the accurate restoration of the rest of the town. Retail operations began in 1928, but the name “Merchants Square” wasn’t coined until much later. “In the thirties and forties, it was called ‘The Shops,” WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2013

Photos courtesy Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Casey’s Department Store occupied the northeast corner of Duke of Gloucester and N. Henry Streets before the new Casey’s was built. This picture shows the old Casey’s.

Chappell said. “It didn’t have the name Merchants Square until the 1960s. The insides of the buildings have changed more than the outside,” he noted. During construction, the buildings were set back farther from the street offering easy pedestrian access. Power and telephone lines were buried and trees and plants were planted to conceal heating ducts and garage equipment. The street eventually was closed to vehicular traffic and parking. Over the years there have been several businesses that have come and gone. Merchants Square was the site of a Howard Johnson restaurant, now Binns, and an A&P Grocery Store, now the Craft House. “The post office was initially where the Christmas Shop and Trellis are,” Chappell recalled. “Then it moved a block to the north and then in the 1960s moved to where Seasons is. Then it moved to Lafayette Street.” Williamsburg United Methodist Church on Jamestown Road was once located in location where Talbots is located. The newly opened DoG Street Pub was originally built as Peninsula National Bank. That building stayed a bank until a couple of years ago. Williamsburg Drug, which were longtime tenants was located where Williams & Sonoma is located. The drugstore has moved to McLaws Circle. The Kimball Theatre was originally called the Williamsburg Theater and it opened in the early 1930s. The WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, JUNE 2013

theater was restored and renovated in 2000 to allow for live performances in addition to movies. A 35-seat screening room was added upstairs. Locals remember Casey’s Department Store which anchored the square for seven decades. It closed in 1999 and was renovated to become the College of William & Mary Bookstore. “The idea of putting the college bookstore a block east of the college was part of an effort to keep Merchants Square vital and to integrate the college to draw students and townspeople to the east side of Merchants Square,” Chappell said. “For many years it was Casey’s Department Store so the space worked really well as a bookstore.” The yearlong celebration of Merchants Square includes a trivia contest that runs through May 13. The ever-popular Summer Breeze concert series will start earlier on June 19. The hope is more area residents and visitors will visit the square/ “I think the point it was it was always intended for visitors and Williamsburg citizens and still is,” Chappell said. “I think there is still a lot of draw for the local population.” More – Visit www.merchantssquare.org. –Ann Efimetz

Colonial Williamsburg has assembled these exquisite objects through years of painstaking research and collaboration to produce a stunning exhibition of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and other artworks pertinent to the Atlantic coast states from Maryland southward and the upper coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibit runs through Sept. 7, 2014. • Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury - Reflects the complexity of mounting a war effort against the world’s most powerful 18thcentury nation. The newest addition is the Tin Shop. This period industrial complex features the main armoury building with its blacksmith forges and a kitchen where Anderson fed his diverse 40-person work force and other structures. • Threads of Feeling – When mothers left babies at London’s Foundling Hospital in the mid-18th century, the Hospital often retained a small token as a means of identification, usually a piece of fabric. Each scrap of material reflects the life of a single infant and that of its absent parent. Organized by the Foundling Museum and curated by John Styles, this will be the only American venue for this exhibition which opened May 25 at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, located at the corner of Francis and Henry Streets and entered through the Public Hospital. Get help for summer hazards Summer brings warmer temperatures, pretty flowers and an increased risk of having an accident. There are more opportunities to get hurt during summer as people spend more time outside. The hazards of summer can range from sunburn to tick bites. Dr. Michael Rogowski and the medical staff of MDExpress on Monticello Avenue see a variety of summertime maladies, beginning in spring with the onset of allergies, soon followed by insect bites. Bee stings and tick bites multiply exponentially as the temperatures heat up. “Lyme Disease is big in our area,” Rogowski said recently. “Make sure to check the kids and make sure they don’t have ticks on them. If they do get a tick bite and it is starting to get red, they need to get it looked at.” One of the most common problems during summer is poison ivy. “Every year we see poison ivy, lots of poison ivy, people covered with poison ivy,” he said. “A lot of times people are careful with it, but may have a pet that goes out and rolls in it and gets the oil on its fur. Every year we see that. The patient says, ‘I

with stuff in their eyes when they are weed wacking,” Rogowski said. “Something flew up and hit them in the eye.” Feet are another concern. Patients with various lacerations from barnacles, shells and rocks are common. Unfortunately, these types of injuries have the chance of getting infected easily.

Rogowski recommends using Bacitracin to treat the cuts, as he commonly sees allergic reactions to other antibacterial ointments. There are a lot more people on the roads on bikes, running and jogging, and drivers need to use more caution, he noted.

Sunscreen should be used year-round, but it is very important to use during summer. Golfers should take particular caution. “If you are out golfing, you are going to be in the sun, make sure you are wearing sunscreen and a hat to protect your head,” Rogowski said. “We see a lot of bad sunburns during summer.” And don’t forget to apply sunscreen on the back of the neck and behind the ears, he added. Keep from getting hurt doing necessary yard work by protecting the eyes. “Every year we see someone

I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor

More than coffee When Don and Geri Pratt opened Aromas on Prince George Street 13 years ago, they wanted to offer a place where visitors, locals and students could sit and enjoy coffee, food and each other. They have succeeded in their goal, as the shop on Prince George Street has earned the reputation of being a hip but cozy place to get a great cup of coffee or tea accompanied by wonderful food. “When we opened, we wanted people to be comfortable here,” Don Pratt said recently. “I think we have been able to accomplish that. It is one of the most satisfying things about this business and hopefully those who come have a warm and unique experience that makes them want to come back.” Aromas offers a variety of coffee from around the world that is freshly ground on the premises. There are blends from locales including Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Honduras. The ways to prepare the coffee are boundless. Coffee can even be shipped to customers throughout the country, including “Magnus,” a bold flavored brew, original to Aromas which appeals to those who like a fuller taste. The Pratts enjoy spending time in the restaurant each day and know many of the customers by name. “I have to be in the office to do administrative work, but what I like is to stand behind the bar and

interact with the customers,” Pratt said. The menu, which features selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner, has been expanded to include more daily specials prepared by the chef, and a variety of health-conscious choices. “It has stemmed for the need for healthier options across the board,” Pratt said. “The healthy options are an important part of our menu offerings.” There are vegetarian items including a vegetarian cheese melt, portobello burger, white pita pizza and nachos. There’s even a vegan chocolate cake on the menu. “We try to give a great deal more focus to things people are looking for,” he said. “We are doing what we can to help the community from a health perspective.” The Pratts also have a committent to the area and offer “Great Coffee for Great Causes,” which through a special coupon, can help raise money for nonprofits. “We want to support very worthwhile organizations in the community,” he said. The hip feel at Aromas is further evidenced by ever-changing artwork, live entertainment by local performers and even a chance to grab the microphone to share a poem or tell a story. “It is like a local “Cheers,” Pratt said. “People know each other and visitors are welcome. I hope that everyone who comes here feels warmth and comfort.” –Ann Efimetz

Airport Road offers an ideal spot for a family outing. Fishing enthusiasts also love Waller Mill for its quiet areas to catch freshwater fish. There are biking trails, canoes and paddle boats available to rent. If you are looking to cool off, you can try a ferry ride from across the James River to Surry. Ferries make a 30-minute round trip across the river throughout the day. The James River ferry is the only 24-hour state run ferry operation in Virginia. You can catch the ferry at Glass House Point at Jamestown for the ride to Surry County. The ride is fun for adults, but kids especially love it.
