WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2015
In June, the Williamsburg area enjoys mild temperatures and bursts with colors and happenings. Temperatures are often mild, making it the perfect time to explore the many activities in the city and beyond. In this month’s Williamsburg Magazine, we preview two annual events that bring in visitors and bring out residents: the Busch Gardens Food & Wine Festival and the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. Now in its third season, the Busch Gardens Food & Wine Festival continues to be a popular event that brings residents back to the theme park week after week. The event takes place weekends through June with 14 kiosks set up around the park offering tastings of international foods. This year Asia and New Orleans have been brought into the offerings. Wine pairings and a new scotch tasting have been added to the mix. The Virginia Shakespeare Festival opens July 8 and continues through Aug. 24 in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall on the College of William and Mary campus. This year’s lineup includes “All’s Well That Ends Well,” a popular comedy about a servant girl who’ll stop at nothing to win a nobleman. “Antony and Cleopatra” follows, bringing a history play that offers two great roles of fire and passion. Opening as well is “Thunderbirds: Jewelry of the Santa Domingo Pueblo,” a fascinating collection of folk art created by these American Indians. The exhibit, on display later this month at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, expands the concept of American folk art that abounds in this Colonial Williamsburg museum. For the What’s Cooking profile this month, we drop in on Nelson Miller, chef/owner of Silt in the Village Shops at Kingsmill. Miller and his crew turn out Southern favorites using locally sourced meats and produce. We also invite you to explore Smithfield and Yorktown, two great destinations not far from the Williamsburg area. Both offer shops, restaurants and activities that make for great day-trips. And a roundup of farmers markets in the region will keep you informed of all the great locally produced vegetables and other products for sale. This month’s Local Spin looks at Goodman & Sons, one of the long-established jewelry stores in our area. Their second store in Williamsburg carries many fine diamond lines as well as accessories for special occasions. Sports enthusiasts will want to come out for Run for the Dream, an annual series of races that takes place on the last weekend of May. This year’s event has been expanded with a Friday night race. A half marathon race and fun run for families offers plenty of choices for this charitable event that benefits An Achievable Dream. Finally in our Retiring in Williamsburg feature, we talk to realtor Rolf Kramer. He devotes much of his business to helping retirees moving to this area find the perfect home. Much of his business comes from a website he developed. Enjoy the beautiful weather and countless activities that June has to offer.

Southern Chic
$W 6LOW À QH GLQLQJ ZLWKRXW EHLQJ SUHWHQWLRXV By David Nicholson
Chef Nelson Miller believes “farm to fork isn’t a fad — it’s a way of life.â€? That food should be locally sourced and responsibly grown, that customers at his restaurant should know where their food is coming from — these are concepts he follows at Silt, his year-old restaurant in the Villlage Shops at Kingsmill. Miller, 33, fashions a menu of Southern favorites that utilizes everything Virginia has to offer. Items such as Sweet Tea-Brined Pork Chop, Pork Belly and Mac, and Pan Roasted Chicken are made with meats that come from Polyface Farms in Swoope. “They’re very selective about who uses their products,â€? said Amber HatďŹ eld, the restaurant’s general manager. “We believe in supporting small farms.â€? Other dishes such as Grits and Grillades, and Low Country Pasta, attest to Miller’s devotion to the foods of the South. He takes care with his food but doesn’t want it to appear fussy and grand. “Fine dining is what I love but we want to do it in a nonpretentious way,â€? he said. His “come as you areâ€? attitude is reected in the casual interior of Silt, which features tables made of wood salvaged from an old barn in North Carolina. Miller jokes that when he told his interior-designer mom he was decorating the restaurant in a “rusticfarmhouse-chicâ€? theme, she was skeptical. When she saw the ďŹ nished product, she told him he’d managed to pull it off. Born and raised in Richmond, Miller remembers hanging out in the kitchen at an early age. “Food always was important to me,â€? he said. The family would gather for food and

conversation at supper, something he tries to duplicate for his customers at the restaurant. At age 14, he got a job at Lukard’s Market in Richmond where he made friends with the butcher and learned how to break down cuts of meat. As a teenager he worked at the former Duck Inn in Virginia Beach. After attending Christchurch School, Miller enrolled in the Johnson & Wales University culinary program in Charleston, S.C. That experience didn’t work for him and he left after a year. But he stayed in Charleston, working at restaurants such as Magnolia’s and 82 Queen, where he learned about “Southern foods as ďŹ ne dining.â€? continued on page 33

Area farmers markets keep it fresh and local By David Nicholson
Finding fresh local produce has gotten easier in recent years with the arrival of several farmers markets to our area. These treasured resources sell a myriad of products, including produce, meats, baked goods, plants and flowers. They also offer the opportunity to talk with the farmers and vendors who grow and prepare the food that we eat. “People are really interested in how their food is grown and where it comes from,” says Tracy Herner, manager of the Williamsburg Farmers Market. “At the market, you can talk to the farmers and you know they’re not using 22

Bard festival
brings tales of love, ambitions By David Nicholson Two contrasting tales of love and amibition, “All’s Well That Ends Well” and “Antony and Cleopatra,” will be mounted at the 2015 Virginia Shakespeare Festival. This summer’s 37th season plays July 8 through Aug. 24 in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall on the College of William and Mary campus. Tickets are now on sale. Joining the company of talented young actors are several names from the worlds of off-Broadway, film, television and international theater. Kathleen Huber, playing the Countess in “All’s Well That Ends Well,” has appeared in “Law and Order” and on the Off-Broadway stage. Mia HutchinsonShaw, who travels to Williamsburg from Scotland’s Royal Conservatory, will play Helena, the ambitious young servant who pursues the Countess’ son. 30
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2015
The roles of Antony and Cleopatra will be played by Edward Stanley and Aleisha Force. Stanley has appeared on TV episodes of “Desperate Housewives” and “Modern Family” and is currently playing Off-Broadway in “Sleep No More.” He’s planning to take a six-week break from the New York production to appear at the festival. Force appeared in the just released feature film, “Suspicion.” “She is a force of nature,” said Artistic Director Christopher Owens, who also serves on the William and Mary theater faculty and will direct the play. “We had a very good run of ‘Julius Caesar ‘last year so ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ was appealing to me. It’s a wonderful piece for two actors.” The season will open July 8 with “All’s Well That Ends Well. The comedy will be directed by Steven Breese, who has acted in and dirercted several past productions. Formerly a dean at Christopher Newport University, Breese now works as dean of arts and sciences at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. Owens called “All’s Well That Ends Well” one of Shakespeare’s “more delicate comedies. “The play follows the heroine, Helena, who is trying to get this guy who is way above her class,” he said. “There’s a happy ending but a lot of conflict leading up to that.” Owens has given the setting of the play a swashbuckling look in the style of the Three Muskateers.
“Antony and Cleopatra,” opening July 23, will be set in the traditional 30 B.C. time period though Owens promises a grand look on an operatic scale. “The play has not been a favorite of mine but I did not realize it has a tremebndous amount of humor,” he said. “The humor keeps going, and I’ve come to embrace that.” The play takes place more than a decade after death of Julius Caesar and the downfall of Brutus and Cassius. The triumvirate of Octavius Caesar, Lepidus, and Marc Antony rule the empire, but their egos clash and Rome begins to unravel. “Ambition, love, and lust collide,” according to a festival release. Miller eventually finished his training at Scottsdale Culinary Arts in Arizona and returned home to spend the next eight years working with chef Alain Lecomte at Chez Max in the city’s West End. “He broke things down and helped me understand why food works the way it does,” said Miller. The next stop was Williamsburg, where he worked at the Blue Talon Bistro under chef David Everett for a year before before leaving to open Silt. Hatfield has been with the restaurant since the beginning, and Miller’s wife, Olivia, is a partner as well, though she has her hands full with two small children. Miller changes his menu every four to six weeks, though some items such as the pork chop are constants. “Being a Virginia boy, you have to know how to cook crab cakes and oysters, and you better know how to cook pork right,” he said. His clients have been steadily growing, as Miller works to create a dining experience that generates conversation. “When we create a dish, we want that last bite to be a little different from the first one,” he said. “We want those flavors to keep rolling.” Want to go? retiring in williamsburg
Rolf Kramer By David Nicholson
In his former life, Rolf Kramer was a systems engineer working on air traffic control systems. Now he offers people a different kind of direction as a realtor for Liz Moore and Associates specializing in helping seniors find a retirement home in the Williamsburg area. A key component of his marketing efforts is Retirment Living in Williamsburg, a website he maintains (retiringinwilliamsburg.com) that provides information on housing options and lifestyle amenities in the area. Over the years its popularity has grown and now provides Kramer with one third to one half of his business. Most of Kramer’s clients come from the New England area either because they have friends and relatives here or have visited the area and are attracted to it. They like Williamsburg’s four-season climate, its proximity to the ocean and the mountains, and its intellectual community. “It’s a college town with arts and museums — there’s lots to do — plus the historic area, ” he said. “There are also learning opportunities such as the Christopher Wren Society at the College of William and Mary.
“And even though people are retired, they want to stay involved,” he said. “We have an incredible number of places to volunteer.” Williamsburg also offers a number of housing options in urban, suburban and country settings. For clients, a first-floor master bedroom is critical. Many are tired of caring for a large yard but they may opt for a small yard to allow space between neighbors. Others like the New Town area because they can walk to shops and restaurants. For clients who are unsure about moving to a strange town, he suggests they rent for a year. Kramer’s website allows clients to do their own research. Or they can send him criteria and he’ll set up a search for them. Kramer, 65, enjoys the senior niche because “I learned I really liked working with people my own age. “People here are so easy to like, and they all have fascinating histories,” he said. “It’s great to truly listen to folks and find out what they need.” Rolf Kramer Liz Moore and Associates 5350 Discovery Park Blvd., Williamsburg Contact him at 757-564-4455 or by email at rolfkramer@lizmoore.com. Thunderbirds:
Jewelry of the Santo Domingo Pueblo By David Nicholson An exhibition of Native American folk art jewelry opens June 27 at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Colonial Williamsburg. Thunderbirds: Jewelry of the Santo Domingo Pueblo features more than 100 pieces of this underappreciated art form called thunderbird jewelry because of the predominant motif found on necklace pendants. The pieces - hand-made necklaces, earrings, bolo ties, hair clips and more - were created by Native Americans at the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico during the Depression years. On display until Sept. 15, the exhibition also includes early period photography and tools and materials used by Santo Domingo artists. “When mentioning American folk art, images of weathervanes, quilts, and charming portraits of children might first come to mind, but there is much more to consider,” said Jan Gilliam, manager of exhibit planning for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “This exhibition stretches those traditional boundaries and explores a type of art and a group of people not previously represented at the museum. The Santo Domingo Pueblo is made up of approximately 2500 people and is located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the Rio Grande River Valley. They have made jewelry as an economic mainstay for more than one hundred years. Considered to be a cottage industry, the work traditionally involved the entire family in the process from creation to sales. “The importance of this jewelry is that during the Great Depression, the Santo Domingo people found a way to survive economically by creating a new style of affordable jewelry that appealed to a declining tourist market,” said J. Roderick 56
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2015
Moore, co-director of the Blue Ridge Institute at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. Moore and Sally Moore are the guest curators of the exhibition. “Based on their traditional methods of jewelry making, they actually created a new tradition by using their creativity and available materials.” During the Depression years, the Santo Domingo Pueblo people were able to produce the jewelry at home using family members and using simple tools and materials. Black plastic, readily available from used car batteries or 78 rpm record albums, was relatively easy to shape and work and became a popular substitute for jet or bone backings. The jewelry was made by hand and each family had their own patterns for the thunderbird forms. Of the numerous pieces on view, most were made between the 1930s and 1950s. Also included are examples that were made as late as the 1960s as well as pieces that date earlier, possibly as early as 1800. “It is exciting to be able to present this story of a small group of people who adapted their traditions to accommodate their changing circumstances,” said Gilliam. “The colors, forms and materials of the jewelry are as appealing today as they were when the objects were made. But beyond the beauty of the pieces are the fascinating personal histories of the makers. It is folk art well worth exploring.” The Abby Aldrick Folk Art Museum is located at 326 W. Francis St. and is reachable through the Public Hospital of 1773. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Admission is $12.99 adults, $6.49 youths ages 6 to 12. For museum information, call 757220-7724.

Guests enjoying the Carribean food kiosk
Go to a theme park… for the food By David Nicholson
Busch Gardens learns from its patrons, so each year the theme park’s Food & Wine Festival gets bigger and better, said Franz Kitenko, culinary vicepresident. “We did a great online survey a couple of years ago,” said Kitenko. “Guests recommended we add Caribbean and American Southwest foods, and last year Caribbean was our No. 1 kiosk.” The food and wine festival continues Fridays through Sundays through June 28. Park guests are able to purchase individual-sized tasting portions of 58
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2015
international foods at the 14 themed kiosks set up throughout the park. The lineup includes foods from Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Scandinavia, Scotland and Spain. This year Kitenko is excited about two new additions — Asia and the French Quarter — to the mix developed by Executive Chef Justin Watson. The menu for Asian cuisine features dishes such as the Vietnamese sandwich called “Báhn Mi” that contains marinated, barbecued pork and pickled vegetables on crispy bread. A Lettuce Wrap combines vegetables and tofu wrapped in butter lettuce with toasted almonds and a sweet chili dipping sauce.
Mushi-Gyoza are Japanese-style steamed chicken dumplings with a citrus ponzu sauce. Finally, dessert lovers can enjoy creamy custard infused with ginger and lemongrass. At the French Quarter kiosk, favorites such as Chicken and Andouille Gumbo mix shredded chicken and spicy sausage over rice. Busch has their own version of the popular Muffaletta sandwich, this one made with mortadella, salami, ham and provolone topped with olive spread on sesame bread and accompanied with Cajun coleslaw. For a sweet end to the meal, try the Bananas Foster Cheesecake, a vanilla and pecan-crusted cheesecake made with orange-rum caramel sauce and sliced bananas. Wine tastings are back this year, with wines that pair to the different foods. New this year is a Scotch tasting of three different styles of Scotch that can be found — of course — in the Scottish section of the park. “People come out just for the food and wine and have become regulars,” said Kitenko. “It’s hard to visit all the kiosks in one day, so people are returning week after week.”

A jewel of a business Goodman & Sons built on honesty, integrity By David Nicholson
Surf the Internet and you can learn a lot about diamonds. But Marcella Wishom cautions that not everything out there is accurate. Wishom, a certified diamontologist, manages the Williamsburg store of Goodman & Sons Jewelers located in Monticello Marketplace. If you’re in the market for a diamond or another precious stone, her advice is to come in and learn from a reputable jeweler. Goodman & Sons has been a well-known name in Peninsula retail for decades. Stanley, how decreased, his wife, Lena, and three sons, Stuart, Eric and Ned, built a business based on “honesty, integrity and excellence in customer service,” said Wishom. The company was one of the original tenants when it opened its second store in the Monticello Marketplace. 62
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2015
“Several of our customers in Hampton talked to the mother and father over the years, saying they were retiring to Williamsburg and wished we would open a store there,” said Stuart Goodman. “When we first opened, Route 199 wasn’t even finished yet. But the population is growing, and it’s been a very good decision.” Goodman & Sons handles the gamut from routine repair work to gifts for weddings, graduations, special anniversaries and other occasions. “We cater to all different walks of life,” said Wishom. “We try to meet everyone’s needs, from replacing a battery to customized work. There’s nothing too small for us. We have a jeweler and an apprentice on staff.” Diamonds are a hallmark of the store, and Goodman carries several lines. Forevermark, a DeBeers company, “comes with a promise that each one will be rare, beautiful and
responsibly sourced,” said Wishom. The company etches a microscopic number onto the face of each stone for identification purposes. Hearts On Fire diamonds are known as “the world’s most perfetly cut diamond,” she said. “It means that every diamond will have the same cutting process. It’s the only diamond that is cut to preserve beauty rather than weight.” Goodman & Sons even has a Lena line of their own specialty cut diamonds named after the founder’s wife. They are a Gold Level retailer for Pandora products and last year upgraded their store to give Pandora more prominent display. They also carry the William Henry line of limited-edition pens, knives, cuff links and other items for men. Part of their mission includes supporting the community, such as donating a $1,000 pen to the Relay For Life auction and a Hearts on Fire diamond to the Walsingham Academy fundraiser. Wishom believes “consumer confidence is up,” which means people are shopping more. The store offers chocolate and canary yellow diamonds as well as sapphires, rubies, emeralds and tanzanite stones.
They can be used in many settings but the most popular one continues to be the ring. There’s no better way to admire a diamond than when it’s sitting on your finger. Goodman & Sons Jewelers. Monticello Marketplace, 4640-11A Monticello Ave., Williamsburg. 757-229-5388. Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Because emergencies aren’t about waiting
Heading to the Emergency Department means you need medical treatment. That’s why we work hard to make sure you will be seen as quickly as possible.
Advanced technology and an electronic medical record assist our staff in initiating diagnostic testing quickly.
Help us to help you by carrying your medication list with you on your visit. Many patients can alert us that they are headed our way by using InQuicker, an online program that works similarly to “call ahead seating” at a restaurant. Go to Riversideonline.com.
You o can’t always avoid accidents and illness. But you can avoid long waits for emergency treatment. Count on Riverside for care that is effective, efficient and fast.
