It’s June and that means summer, a time to be outside enjoying nature, playing sports and listening to great music. We’re thrilled to welcome back Funhouse Fest, a three-day music extravaganza put together by Williamsburg’s own Bruce Hornsby. In this issue we share an interview with yMusic, one of the more eclectic and greatly anticipated bands that will join the fun this month. You can also find music at Williamsburg Winery’s Uncorked and Unplugged gathering, Thursday nights at Yorktown’s Riverwalk and at the Kimball Theater where you can catch a flash from the past and a taste of Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. If you’re seeking quiet, The James River Association will host paddle tours along Powhatan Creek beside the historic Jamestown Island. Triple Crown baseball returns to Yorktown By Kellen Holtzman For the eighth consecutive season, Yorktown will play host to the Triple Crown Sports Virginia State Championships in baseball, June 3-4 at the McReynolds Athletic Complex. The tournament, for ages 8-14, is open to teams nationwide. Charles Lane of Colorado-based Triple Crown said about 90 teams will take part in the event, which will have no entry fees at the gate. “We stay in Yorktown each year for consistency of location for teams to plan on for year to year,” Lane said. “We also try to stay on the same weekend each year.” The state championships are one of two Triple Crown baseball events scheduled for Virginia this summer and one of 31 nationwide in June. The other Virginia competition is the U.S. Baseball Champion-
ships in Henrico County in July. For the 13-year-old players, as well as the 14s, the distance from the mound to home plate will be 60 feet and the distance between bases 90 feet. The 11s and 12s will play 50’-70,’ the 9s and 10s 46’-65’ and the 8s 40’-60.’ Five of McReynolds’ 13 lighted fields are for youth baseball or softball and the park’s amenities include three concession/restroom buildings, 31 picnic shelters, vending machines, and more than two miles of multipurpose paths. Triple Crown started in 1982 with a slow-pitch softball tournament in Colorado before growing into a major youth sports brand, staging international tournaments in multiple sports, including on the collegiate level. Kick off summer with your dog By Amanda Williams Heritage Humane Society wants people to start the summer with their four-legged companions leading the way. Tails on the Trials is the shelter’s annual summer kickoff. This year dogs and people alike will gather at James City County’s Freedom Park June 3 to explore the park’s miles of trails. “We partner with James City County Parks and Recreation to bring this annual event so that people will be encouraged to be more active with their pets,” Heritage’s director Kim Laska said.
“We want them to explore the beautiful parks here in James City County.” Laska said the event always takes place on National Trails Day, and is meant to be a starting point for people to explore outdoors with their pets all summer. It’s a self-guided program. Shelter volunteers and staff distribute maps of trails where people can bring their dogs and the outdoor activities end with Heritage’s Drool in the Pool event Sept. 9. “We just want people to come and get active and have fun,” Laska said. “We want all our animal lovers in our community
to promote healthy lifestyles for their dogs.” She said the humane society will have tables June 3 with information for people, and treats and water for the dogs. If enough volunteers sign up, adoptable dogs from the shelter will get to explore the trails too. The event is free, and Laska said they ask that dogs be up-todate on all shots and be dogfriendly. By Troy Jefferson The James River Association will host tours by paddle along the Powhatan Creek beside the historic Jamestown Island all summer long. “It’s a special thing we offer that is free and open to the public. It is not a difficult paddle, it’s
intended to be for folks who are comfortable in kayaks but you don’t need prior experience,” said Jamie Brunkow, James River Association riverkeeper. “It’s supposed to be an informal introduction to the James River and Powhatan Creek.” There will be a tour on June 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., starting at

the James City County Marina. This is the fourth year of the guided tour. During the paddle, guests will learn about birds and wildlife native to the Williamsburg area. Brunkow said people have responded positively to the prior years and the earlier people reserve a spot the better. He said the trips in September and October usually fill up the fastest. Kayaks are provided and there is a 16 person limit per trip. Guests have to be 16 years or older to participate. “We want to get people out there appreciating the river more often,” Brunkow said. Enjoy the Sounds of Summer in Yorktown By Seth Birkenmeyer The Yorktown waterfront will be grooving Thursday nights throughout June and July thanks to the Sounds of Summer concert series, previously dubbed Shagging on the Riverfront. But the name change shouldn’t worry you, according to York County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Event Planner Kevin Ritchie. “People have been coming out for years and years and years,” Ritchie said. “We’re still going to be offering some great bands.” The series combines established local favorites and some fresh faces. It focuses on beach music to complement the summer night atmosphere. The Holiday Band kicks things off on June 8. “It’s a chance for folks to come out and enjoy River Landing and enjoy some great music,” Ritchie said. “It’s just a beautiful setting right on the water.”

Glow little runner, glimmer, glimmer By Amanda Williams On June 16, scores of people will line up at Legacy Hall in New Town, take their marks, get ready, get set, and take off. And they’ll be glowing. The Friday night is Adventure Enablers’ annual Williamsburg Glow Run where participants are encouraged to dress up in their brightest garb and attach glow sticks wherever possible for a nighttime race. People with the best outfits are in the running for a prize at the end of the night. In the past, groups have donned matching neon outfits, glow stick glasses and even bright face paint. A family-friendly event, the 5K race starts at dusk and the 1-mile fun run shortly after. Both
races are untimed, and flashlights and headlamps are recommended. The race course is a tour of New Town, guiding runners up and down Casey and Discovery Park boulevards. For the 5K, the race costs $40 until June 9, then its $45 until June 15. Registration is $50 the day of the race. The 1-mile run is $30 until June 9, then its $35 until June 15 and registration is $40 the day of the race. All runners get a glow-inthe-dark t-shirt and a glow stick. Top-flight boys lacrosse tournament set for June 17 By Kellen Holtzman The sixth annual Summer Celebration boys lacrosse tournament will visit Warhill Sports Complex on June 17. The Summer Celebration will feature a one-day 10 vs. 10 tournament format with divisions limited to eight teams that are guaranteed a minimum of three 52-minute games that will be played in accordance with U.S. Lacrosse boys youth rules. Last year, team champions were crowned from Chesapeake, 14

Charlottesville and Owings, Marylan, in addition to Norfolk-based 757 Select. Last fall, WISC also played host to the seventh Colonial Challenge tournament put on by Virginia-based Capital Lacrosse, which was founded in 2003 and started with tournaments in Northern Virginia. Since it was founded, Capital Lacrosse has specialized in organizing day, evening and overnight camps around the state. The Capital Lacrosse website calls each Williamsburg tournament
two of the top events in the MidAtlantic regions of U.S. Lacrosse. Williamsburg is home to two lacrosse clubs and has seen significant growth in recent years that has included each WilliamsburgJames City County high school establishing boys club teams with ambitions of becoming varsitysanctioned. Funhouse Fest to range over musical spectrum By Seth Birkenmeyer Williamsburg native Bruce Hornsby plans another weekend of star-studded entertainment with the second year of his music festival, Funhouse Fest, which rocks out later this month. The festival kicks off on Friday, June 23, when Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers will play their hits; nine-time Grammy-winner Sheryl Crow will also headline. Blues-jazz-roots band Lake Street Dive will perform on the second night of the festival, alongside the Staves, Kenny Garrett, yMusic and Hornsby’s band once again. “It’s a really exciting lineup,” Lake Street Dive member Bridget Kearney said, praising the range of artists from poppier music like Sheryl Crow to more eclectic options like yMusic. “I would love to see each and every set.” She said Lake Street Dive falls somewhere in the 16

middle of that wide spectrum. The band is heavily influenced by the Beatles. “I have really connected with music since I was a child,” she said. “Things have come and gone but music has always been in my life.” The band members met while studying jazz at the New England Conservatory of Music. They focus on “making a big, full sound with limited instruments,” using their time on stage to improvise, experiment and workshop songs with the audience there to bear witness. “Under the best of circumstances, it’s a collective performance with the audience,” she said. “That’s something that we continue to do as the stages have gotten bigger.” Her band has come a long way since those early days of playing around Boston. Now, they tour the world. Kearney plays upright bass in the band, which she says gives them a unique touch. She also praised
Lake Street Dive’s “great lead singer.” Kearney praised “cool tastemaker” Hornsby’s work as the festival’s artistic director. “There are so many festivals these days, it’s really crucial to have someone at the helm with good taste,” she said. “This is very diverse. It’s wild and bold.” “It’s a good chance to experience music you haven’t heard of before,” she said. “This will probably open up whole worlds of new music to people.” Kearney released her first solo album, “Won’t Let You Down,” earlier this year. yMusic, a six-piece chamber ensemble from New York City, was also handpicked by Hornsby for the lineup, after he saw the band collaborating with the Staves at the Eaux Claires music festival in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. “It was one of the most thrilling things we’ve ever done,” yMusic’s trumpeter, C.J. Camerieri, said. “It really resonated with him.” Camerieri said the feeling is mutual. “We are all fans and admirers,” he said, hoping to collaborate at the festival with Hornsby as well as with the Staves once more. “We have our own body of work and we serve as a ready-made collaborative unit,” Camerieri said, adding that his band’s chamber music is “rather complex.” “A lot of people don’t think that they enjoy contemporary classical music,” he said, but seeing it live has the power to change their minds. Camerieri has been to the Williamsburg area before by himself as a part of both Bon Iver and with yMusic touring alongside Ben Folds. “It looks like a really great festival with a lot of variety,” he said. Winery concert series kicks off with LeAnn Rimes By Seth Birkenmeyer Twice a year, the Williamsburg Winery toasts to acoustic performances with its Uncorked and Unplugged concert series. Singer LeAnn Rimes headlines June’s iteration. “She’s been a well-known, established talent for what now is almost three decades,” the winery’s marketing director, Michael Kimball, said. In 1997, at the age 14, Rimes became the youngest person ever to win a Grammy. Kimball said “she’s relevant in various music genres” with a “long history of sustained … success.” He hopes that her music, which spans country and pop, appeals to a wide range of people. He also said that the Uncorked and Unplugged concert series is meant as a platform for up-and-coming artists as well. The attractions extend beyond the music. “We’re going to have an elevated culinary experience,” Kimball said. Southern chefs will be creating unique dishes that combine local ingredients with traditional festival food. Lamb sausages, falafels and more will be available. Unsurprisingly, there will be plenty of wine to enjoy; the winery is still deciding on which ones to include. Craft beer and cider from Virginia will also be on site.

As of this writing, no other acts beyond Rimes have been announced, but Kimball said to expect four to five in total. “It’s really enhanced the awareness of not only our winery, but Virginia wine and the Williamsburg Tasting Trail,” Kimball said. “The event is very intimate,” he said, emphasizing the “stripped down” nature of the sets that will be performed. Winery doors open at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, with the concert lasting from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older to attend. General admission, which includes lawn seating and a souvenir wine glass, is $50. The VIP experience is $100 and includes the wine glass, a private wine bar and premium seating under a tent. Jamestown Settlement will showcase a wide range of crafts at its two day “Historic Trades Fair.” The trades fair, which will take place on June 3 and 4, will demonstrate everything from blacksmithing to pottery. Jamestown Settlement craftspeople will perform the crafts on the museum’s mall and in the outdoor living-history areas. In addition to seven other demonstrators, the Southeast Virginia Primitive Skills Group will show techniques in flint-knapping, native coil pottery, broom-weaving, leather-working and fire-starting. One demonstrator will make

Sing around the campfire at Chickahominy Riverfront Park By Troy Jefferson The James City County Parks and Recreations department is asking locals and tourists to gather round for their Camp Fire Socials. “We’re going to have a campfire pit, have storytellers tell classic campfire stories,” said Erik Lavender, park coordinator at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. “We will also do nature programs talking about local wildlife.” This is the first year of the socials. Lavender said the county was looking for another way to connect with the community and take
advantage of the park’s amenities. The Camp Fire Socials will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. on nearly every Saturday in June, July and August. Overlooking Gordon Creek, guests will also be able to enjoy s’mores and other camping related activities, according to Lavender. The Camp Fire Socials will be held at Chickahominy Riverfront Park on John Tyler Highway. The park features over 100 campsites, a 24 hour pier for fishing, a basketball court and a golf driving range. Admission is free and open to people of all ages.

Father’s Day Surf & Turf at York River State Park By Jimmy LaRoue Moms and their children had their opportunity for Mother’s Day. This month, dads and their children will have the opportunity to bond on the water and on land at the Father’s Day Surf and Turf from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 18 at York River State Park at 9801 York River Park Road. In a ranger-guided program, dads and their children will go on a canoe or kayak ride on the Taskinas Creek and the York River to Fossil Beach to search for relics of the prehistoric era. Dads paddle free with a paid guest, and reservations are required. The cost is $9 per person for a canoe, and for a family of four or more, the cost is $6 each. A life spent knitting expands to Yarn Matters By Victoria Terrinoni For Marina Hayes, the best part of owning Yarn Matters is when people first set foot in the store. The ooohs and aaahs she hears as customer see all the colorful yarns against the white background of the shelving is worth it all. The shop, at 7437 Richmond Road, is in the old Norge Post 32

Office. The building suited her needs for the yarn shop and since it is only one mile from Interstate 64, Richmond Road is the perfect location. Hayes and her husband, Kevin, opened Yarn Matters on July 16, 2016. Hayes said she had no plans to open a yarn shop, but then Knitting Sisters Yarn Shop closed, leaving a void in the community. Also, Hayes was working
nights teaching piano and cello lessons and often had to leave home just as her two daughters were getting home from school. “Now, I can be home when they get home,� she said. Plus, her daughters help out in the store when they can and like to help pick out yarn colors. Yarn Matters sells quality yarns like merino wool. Hayes also sells some yarns from Virginia in-
cluding Cestari Cotton Yarn, Spirit Trail Fiberworks and Fox Wire Farms in Toano. Fox Wire Farms raises alpacas for the wool. Hayes said she likes to buy from smaller dyers across the United States and Canada to get special colors. “With special yarns, you won’t see anyone in the same colors,” she said. Hayes grew up in Russia knitting. She doesn’t even remember when she learned to knit. She just always did. Besides her own knitting projects, she enjoys teaching others to knit and crochet. Yarn Matters holds classes for people of all ages and skill levels and she has some outside teachers to help run the classes. Hayes designs and writes her own patterns. Several of her patterns are published in knitting magazines and on the Internet. She is
especially proud of a pattern for socks published in a magazine in England. And her pumpkin hat design was the biggest seller on the website, www.knitpicks.com, at one time. “Marina is very artistic. She can knit something off the top of her head and then go back and figure out the pattern,” Kevin Hayes said. As a member of the Williamsburg Knitting Guild, Hayes also uses her talents for charitable work such as blankets for veterans, hats for babies and prayer shawls for hospital patients. For Marina Hayes, the best part of running Yarn Matters is meeting the people. “We have some regular customers but we get several tourists too,” she said. And she gets to share her passion with others of like mind.

For seniors looking to buy a home, guidance is at hand By Brandy Centolanza When it comes to buying a new home, senior citizens have a unique set of needs, and they may wish to hire a realtor who understands those needs and is a Seniors Real Estate Specialist. To qualify as an SRES, realtors from the National Association of Realtors participate in a seminar in order to understand how to better help those 50 and older find a house that best suits their interests and lifestyles. Given the number of retirees who migrate to this area, “It’s a big benefit for any realtor who 34

works in Williamsburg,” said Gaye Moth, an SRES with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc. Most senior citizens want to age in place in their own home, but if health issues are a concern, they may want to consider purchasing a home near local hospitals or other health care facilities. Other seniors who no longer drive may want to be close to a bus route or within walking distance of amenities like the library or shopping centers. Active seniors, meanwhile, may want to own a house in a community with a variety of fitness or social programs. Living in a
townhouse or condominium subdivision where little maintenance is required of the homeowner rather than buying a single home with a yard is also something to consider. An SRES works with senior clients to address these issues, sometimes working with family members to help them make the right decisions. “My responsibility is to look out for the welfare and best interests of my clients,” Moth said. “I listen to them and help them satisfy their needs. Seniors should really think about their lifestyle and want they really want

and then pick a realtor who they like and who they feel like is really listening to them.” Money is also an important factor, since some senior citizens are on a fixed income. Frank Hughes, an SRES with Berkshire Hathaway Towne Realty, suggests seniors should think about the following: “Based upon their income level, what price range should they be considering and what impact homeowners’ association dues and rising taxes might have on their budget? What are the plusses and minuses of a reverse mortgage and should that be an option when purchasing? Are there any state or local tax issues that need to be explored? What is the local availability of Independent and Assisted Living? What are the costs for said care?” Downsizing is also difficult, and an SRES needs to be sensitive to that as well.

“I would say the biggest thing that is different in senior moves is that it can be very overwhelming to downsize, especially if you have lived in a home for many years,” points out Liz Moore, president of Liz Moore and Associates Real Estate. “We tend to accumulate a lot of stuff, and so figuring out what to keep, and what to do with what you don’t keep, can be a daunting task.” Buying a new home is a major decision for anyone, but for seniors, it helps to have an SRES there for support. When seniors buy a house, “it is usually more about being sure that they find the right property – one with low maintenance, or

Sands mimics Sinatra’s singing style and his mannerisms as he incorporates graphics and lights for a distinctly multimedia show. It chronicles the Sultan of Swoon from his early years performing alongside Tommy Dorsey in the Big Apple to his “Main Event” comeback performance at Madison Square Garden in October 1974. “People love the show,” Sands said in a news release. “They really don’t expect what they’re going to be seeing. It really is like a musical.” He hopes to capture Ol’ Blue Eyes’ heart and soul with his upcoming performance. “If you don’t feel the song, it won’t get across to the audience,” Sands said. “And every song Frank Sinatra sang, he projected that feeling.” The concert swings from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 11 at the Kimball Theatre. Colonial Sports helps community stay active By Brandy Centolanza Jim Elder, owner of Colonial Sports in Colony Square Shopping Center on Jamestown Road, wants the best for Williamsburg’s runners, old and young alike. That’s why he’s in the business of providing the best quality running shoes and apparel available. Elder opened up shop in the fall of 1994 on Prince George Street and relocated to its current location three years ago. When Colonial Sports first opened, it focused on selling merchandise for runners and walkers, but has since incorporated equipment for field hockey, tennis and lacrosse. The business also does screen printing and embroidery as well as local race management. “I opened the store because I wanted to be a community asset,” Elder said. “I wanted to be a part of the community. I like working with people and helping people.” 38

The shop offers a variety of shoes for walkers and runners, including popular core brand name running shoes. Elder assists customers with measuring their feet, examining their arches, and analyzing their gait in order to find the most comfortable shoe. “The best advice I can give for runners is to buy a shoe within your budget that fits and supports you properly,” Elder said. “I train my employees to fit customers for no matter what they are doing.” Colonial Sports also carries clothing for runners as well as custom over-the-counter orthotics and sports equipment including field hockey sticks. “In field hockey, you want to think about the right weight and length of a stick, the type of stick, and how much strength you want the stick to have,” Elder said. Screen printing and embroidery is also a part of the business. Colonial Sports has worked with the College of William &Mary, Hampton University and
sports clubs such as Focus Field Hockey Club, Starz Gold fastpitch softball club and neighborhood swim teams through years to provide team uniforms, tshirts, shorts and other promotional products including hats, mugs, water bottles and magnets. Eight years ago, Elder also became involved with the promotion of races, most notably the Sentara Sleighbell 5K in December and the Run the D.O.G. Street 5K in April. “I just like being around active people and helping charities raise money,” Elder said. He helps with race event coordination, including registration, designing t-shirts, setting up, and handing out awards and medals. Both the Sleighbell and Run the D.O.G. races each attract roughly 1,300 runners and competitive walkers, some of whom are students in Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools’ School Health Initiative Program (SHIP); others are senior citizens who refuse to slow down. “Watching them is a big thrill for me right now,” Elder said. “I enjoy seeing all the children start and finish a race. To see the light in their eyes when they cross the finish line will melt anyone’s heart. It’s amazing.” Colonial Sports has been a part of the Williamsburg community for so long those customers who once entered through its doors as children are now bringing their own children in to shop. “That’s pretty neat to me,” Elder said. Elder is not a runner, but, “I try to stay in shape,” he said. “I am a big believer in aerobic fitness.” He’s also a board member for the Angels of Mercy Medical Clinic. When he’s not taking stock of running shoes or helping someone find the perfect fit, Elder and his family like to be outdoors. “My passion is fly fishing, and I am also a hardcore camper,” Elder said. “Whenever I have an opportunity to do either of those things, I’ll take it.”
Recalling a Revolutionary battle at Spencer’s Ordinary By Jimmy LaRoue The Williamsburg chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold a memorial service from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. June 26 at Freedom Park, 5537 Centerville Road in Williamsburg, to remember those who gave their lives in the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary in 1781. The Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary was a series of skirmishes in the woods and meadows of Freedom Park between units of Lord Cornwallis and French general Marquis de Lafayette. It took place late in the Revolutionary War. Following the ceremony on the 236th anniversary of the skirmish, historian and Revolutionary War expert Chris Bonin will talk about Spencer’s Ordinary, drawing on first-hand accounts of those who fought on both sides of the battle, and illustrate what happened through detailed drawings. La Terraza Mexican Grill offers an authentic Mexican experience By Victoria Terrinoni The Perez family started in the restaurant business in the 1990s when some uncles immigrated to the United States. They migrated to Boone, North Carolina, and eventually found their way to Williamsburg a few years ago when they opened La Terraza Mexican Grill on Richmond Road. Eduardo Perez, the manager 40

of the restaurant, said the opportunity arose to get the building at 1840 Richmond Road and the location was good, so two and a half years ago the restaurant opened. Virginia Gazette readers voted it Best of the Gazette in 2015 for Mexican food. When you walk into the restaurant, you immediately see the Mexican décor of orange and sand colors with brick archways, tiled
floors and dark wood furnishings. Four family members work at the restaurant although the staff and the regular customers are one big family. “The staff make people feel they are at their own home. We have friendly service so the people feel comfortable and they don’t want to get up and leave,” Perez said. “We know many people by name and what they drink and
what they order,” Perez said. Perez learned restaurant management through the experience of working in other restaurant jobs. Running a restaurant takes focus and energy, according to Perez. He deals with many types of customers so he needs an open mind and patience. “I have fun most of the time.” All the food at La Terraza is made from scratch from recipes created by the chef. A favorite is the burritos with salsa made with a heavy cream base. Burritos and fajitas are the most popular items on the menu, Perez said. They have specials every day, but the lunch fajita special for $6.99 is a customer favorite, he said. On Mondays and Tuesdays the restaurant also offers $1.99 margaritas. “Many locals come in for the reasonable price. They want to have a good time and afford it,” Perez said. Perez is happy with the support he and the restaurant have received from the people of Wil-
liamsburg. “Thank you for supporting us for two and half years. Without your support we would not be who we are so thanks a lot,” he said.
