Living Proof Baptist Church are all one in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” Some of the ministries that the church supports includes “Bike Days,” when church members would go into certain communities with all sorts of bike parts and supplies in order to fix up kids’ bikes for free. Free bikes were also given away. “This has been a great example of a very tangible way in which the church has reached out to meet a felt need in the community and just to say, ‘We love you.’” The church has partnered with Thumper Newman who runs “A Gift from Ben” food ministry. That ministry operates Mondays and Fridays at the facility, feeding 100-150 over the course of the two days. The church is also planning a deaf ministry. “We are aware of a great need for deaf services in our local churches and hope that we will be able to meet this need in the months to come,” Scholten said. As for the future of the church, Scholten said it is in God’s hands. “Our desire is to remain faithful with what God has given to us here and now.” he said.

The Rev. Eric Scholten became pastor of Living Proof Baptist Church, following two years of missionary work in Northern Africa. His goal in leading the small, yet vibrant community of believers is to be faithful to Christ’s church as he shepherds the people God has entrusted to him. He sees his ministry as having both a pulpit and pastoral aspect. He strives to bring God’s Word to the people in ways that will allow each person to more deeply experience God. “I have the great privilege of weekly opening the Bible and teaching God’s word to God’s people,” Scholten said recently. “I spend a lot of time reading, studying, and praying for this important moment in the life of the church. My hope for a Sunday morning is that people would leave Living Proof having seen Christ revealed through his word and having had their hearts, minds, and souls affected by his beauty and power.” When away from the pulpit, he seeks to share the challenges and joys experienced in the lives of church members. “Through small group interactions, one-on-one conversations, shared experiences, and the like, we begin to realize that we are ministering one to another and doing what the Apostle Paul tells the Thessalonians to do, “spur one another on toward love and good deeds,” he said. The church began nine years ago and has and the spirit has been alive in the congregation. “We have seen God work mightily in people’s lives through the gospel,” he said. “There is nothing spectacular about our church in terms of programming or methodology or facilities. We are simply a group of people who, in all of our sins and failures, desire to know and love Christ and love one another.” The church is comprised of people of all ages and from all walks of life, he noted. “When you join Living Proof on a Sunday morning you can plan on worshipping with folks of different age ranges, socioeconomic backgrounds, and ethnic groups,” he said. “The awesome thing about this is that the church never intended to target a particular demographic or become a certain type of church. I think God has brought so many different people together simply as a testimony to the fact that we WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

Chanello’s Pizza Love pizza? Philly cheese steaks? Well then Chanello’s may be just what your appetite needs. Chanello’s relocated to 1408 Richmond Road at the beginning of the year, and has continued offering a variety of pizzas, subs and wings. Owner Frank Mellette has owned the business since 2000 and is pleased with the new location. During summer, the staff is kept busy with a faithful local clientele and serving the thousands of tourists visiting Williamsburg. When the College of William & Mary is in session, there is a steady stream orders from students. Mellette said that only about 25% of his business is walk-in. The majority comes from his delivery business which is far-reaching, he estimates “a good ten minutes in either direction.” “We are very blessed we do well with the college and when the tourists come in, we we do well with them,” Mellette said recently. “We are pretty blessed to have a good year-round customer flow.” With dozens of choices running the gamut from pizza to wings, what’s the most popular item on the menu? “I would say that we sell more basic one or twotopping pizzas in 14-inch size than anything else,” he said. “We also do a lot of cheese breaksticks and Philly cheese steak subs. When you get outside the basic pizzas, those are the two other things we

sell a lot of.” Mellette described the Philly cheese steak sub as “a huge, huge seller for us.” So what happens when you have a craving for a pizza after midnight? Call Chanello’s. They are open and deliver until 3 a.m. every day. “We are open later than a lot of places and we do a strong late night,” he said. Mellette said there was a time they considered closing earlier, but found that the phone continued ringing off the hook until the early morning hours. “We just made 3 a.m. our regular hours every day,” he said. Mellette noted that there are a couple of drivers who have been with Chanello’s for more than 7 years. “That is very unusual for this industry,” he said. “We don’t have the turnover you may see in a lot of places.” Mellette said that he is constantly sees tourists returning each year to get their favorite menu items when they are in town. “We have a pretty loyal following and we have some of the same visitors who come back year after year,” he said.

Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. CLASS ACTS

Age: 25 Alumna, Class of 2010, College of William & Mary Volunteer: Heritage Humane Society

When Jennifer Fox’s dog, Rusty, died in 2007, she was extremely saddened by the loss, admitting she felt as though she “had lost her best friend.” Soon after, she began her studies at the College of William & Mary and became involved with Circle K International, a collegiate level Kiwanis organization. One of the club’s ongoing service projects was volunteering at Heritage Humane. “The opportunity was the perfect therapy for me,” she said recently. “I could interact with the animals without feeling like I was trying to replace Rusty while gaining a real sense of accomplishment knowing that I was benefiting the community. The Heritage Humane Society really helped me overcome my grief.” While there she has helped walk dogs, clean cat cages and feed the animals. “They aren’t the most glamorous tasks, but in order to ensure good health they are absolutely necWILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, AUGUST 2010

essary and it offers a lot of opportunities to interact with all of the animals,” she said. She said there are many aspects about the job which are gratifying, but the most important are the animals. “They are amazingly resilient creatures and they steal my heart,” she said. Fox said that working at Heritage Humane has continued inspiring her to apply for positions at animal care facilities throughout the country. “With my academic background being in history volunteering at Heritage Humane gave me that extra experience that makes me more qualified for the positions I really want,” she said. “There’s really no telling what the future may hold but I am certain that volunteering can only have positive consequences, even if I don’t know what they are just yet.” ––Ann Efimetz

Brenda Perkins “They are not afraid of wheelchairs, walkers, and gray hair,” she said. “They too, like me, have a deep love and respect for seniors.” She recounted a recent meeting between her 16year-old son who met one of Chambrel’s residents who is 103. “When my son heard how old he was, he could not believe it,” Perkins recalled. “He asked what the man did to live to be 103 to which this resident said ‘I drank a lot of milk.’ My son was tickled by his answer because he responded by saying “I drink almost a gallon of skim milk a day—cool!’” Perkins works with a team in planning events for the growing Chambrel community. The team continually canvasses the community, solicits feedback and suggestions, which are incorporated into many of the programs. Perkins said she has truly found her niche and will continue pursuing education which she hopes will eventually lead her to a degree in gerontology. “I would also love to write a book on activity programming for seniors,” she said. “The senior living industry continues to flourish and change with our boomers coming into retirement. It’s a fabulous journey I have enjoyed traveling and plan on continuing for a long time to come.” ––Ann Efimetz

Taking the role of director of lifestyles at Chambrel was a seamless fit for Brenda Perkins. She had majored in psychology and counseling in college and readily admits that she always “had a passion and love for seniors.” “I always knew at a very young age that I wanted to work with seniors,” Perkins said recently. “They have much to share and I learn something from them every day. It is with a humble heart, I realize the privilege and opportunity that is entrusted to me to make a difference in a person’s life.” Far beyond a day-to-day routine, Perkins’ job of outreach and concern for the residents of the community is all encompassing. One day she may spend hours planning or implementing a social function for the community, or on another, providing a word of encouragement or kindness, listening, a smile or even a hug to one of the residents. “No day is the same when I come to work and that’s for sure the real beauty of it,” she said. “I can be in a planning meeting for events, standing on a ladder decorating for a dance or holding the hand of a resident who needs comfort or a compassionate ear.” Perkins approaches her job with optimism and a desire to share her sense of humor with those she encounters. “I love to laugh,” she said. “Too often life can be so serious and stressful. My father taught me the benefits of laughter and humor. Everyone at Chambrel will tell you that I love to laugh and pass that on to our residents and associates anytime I can.” Her inimitable spirit and desire to help older people is what keeps her moving forward and constantly thinking about future ways to serve the Chambrel community. “The most gratifying aspect of working with seniors is the privilege to look inside and see who this person is,” she said. “ I get to see a glimpse of their long and wonderful lives and if you work at it, you can encourage, to reach in to bring that person out. Helping a resident see their personal potential is an awesome experience.” As a result of her job, Perkins said her family has gained respect for the senior population. Her children have “grown up” at Chambrel and have developed a respect for older adults. WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM
