Williamsburg celebrates another St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, but there are ways to celebrate Irish culture all month long. At Kimball Theatre, dancers will fly across the stage in “Irish Mystique,” an Irish Dance Musical that weaves Celtic myth with live music and world-class dancing. Speaking of dancing, Williamsburg has a few Irish dance schools of its own, including the Rose and Sword Academy of Irish Dance. And don’t worry; there will plenty of opportunities for day-of celebration, including Shamrock the ‘Burg. Presented by the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, this fundraising event includes live Irish music from Glasgow Kiss, corned beef and cabbage and plenty of Guinness beverages. Later this month, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown opens officially, and it will celebrate with 13 days of festivities, including a dedication ceremony, military music and gallery tours. Take a different tour the weekend of March 25 and 26 at the Williamsburg Home Show. As you wander William and Mary Hall, experts and professionals will be on hand to offer advice on remodeling, landscaping, building and more. From March 8-11, Williamsburg will say farewell to a long-running film festival. The Williamsburg Film Festival, founded officially in 1997, will present its final event this month with screenings and appearances from Robert Fuller and other guest stars. There’s plenty more to check out this March – keep reading to find out.

Archaeology, case studies fill winter days By Amanda Williams The last of three “case studies” for the Jamestown Rediscovery Education staff at the Archaearium, an indoor program planned to keep away the winter blues, is set for March 18. The Archaearium will host a number of interactive activities for children and their parents. “During winter, things tend to slow down and people try to look for indoor activities,” Willie Balderson, an educational interpreter at Historic Jamestowne, said. “The idea is to offer families a place to go for a few hours, to interact with the environment.” The environment comes in the form of silt dug up from John Smith’s well, Balderson said. Kids will sift through the dirt, using a magnifying glass and

10

tweezers to pull out anything they can find. “Everything that we pull out of the well tells us a little bit more of the story of how it was used,” Balderson said. Participants will also meet Anas Toddkill, an original Jamestowne settler portrayed by Balderson. He’ll talk about his time with John Smith, his first two years in Virginia, and he’ll help kids solve a mystery that takes them through the exhibits in the Archaearium. They’ll be given a double-sided sheet of paper which will take them from exhibit to exhibit, requirWillie Balderson portrays an original Jamestowne settler from 1609, Anas Todkill Photo by Joe Fudge

ing them to find certain items before they can move on with the hunt. “It’s an activity designed to get kids to search the cases and really look at (them),” Balderson said. “They learn a lot more than just what they’re looking for.” The case studies run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 18 at the Archaearium at Historic Jamestowne, 1368 Colonial Parkway. Entrance is free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne.

American Revolution Museum at Yorktown celebrates official opening By Heather Bridges Let’s look at the numbers. It’s been nearly 242 years since the first shots of the American Revolution rang out at Lexington and Concord, 241 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and 236 years since the decisive American victory at Yorktown. Close to 10 years have passed since adopting the master plan for the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, two years since the new building opened and five months since the museum, formerly York12

And at the end of this month, in a culmination of all these numbers, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown opens officially with 13 days celebrating America’s 13 original states. From March 23 to April 4, the museum’s grand opening celebrations encompass gallery tours, military music and interpretive experiences in the

Though the 22,000-squarefoot exhibition galleries debuted last October with a new introductory film, rare artifacts and interactive technology, the museum has continued construction in the months since –adding some indoor components and, outdoors, installing a drill field, artillery demonstration area and more. With the grand opening, the museum essentially unveils the final pieces that will help tell the story of the American Revolution, of “ordinary people in extraordinary times.” Starting March 23, the museum will present ceremonies that honor the original states – one ceremony each day, for 13 days, in the order the states ratified the Constitution. On April 1, honoring Virginia, a dedication ceremony marks the official opening of the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. These 13 ceremonies, each starting around midday, will include opening remarks, presentation of the state flag, a procession to the outdoor amphitheater and, finally, a flag-raising ceremony and artillery salute. Musical performances each afternoon may include appearances from choral ensembles, military musicians and fife and drum corps. The first, sure sign of spring:

Daffodil Festival By Amanda Williams One way to welcome spring is to stop and smell the daffodils at the 31st annual Gloucester Daffodil Festival April 1 and 2. Daffodils have a storied past in the Gloucester County region and the festival celebrates the flower’s industry in the area. It also comes of the heels of the 400th anniversary of Pocahontas’ death. The festival theme, “Home Town Roots, Worldwide Blooms,” is meant to reflect both stories. There will be a daffodil show that incorporates Pocahontas’ life at Werowocomoco. The free show runs from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. “Brent and Becky’s Bulb Tour” will be offered both days, tickets and tour times will be announced 14

on the festival’s website. For the third year, the festival will have a limited edition print commemorating the daffodil’s history alongside Pocahontas’. No festival would be complete without a parade; the bright yellow flower’s parade will start at 10 a.m. Saturday. Offerings throughout the weekend include a Mutt Show, live music, food and a craft beer garden. Artists will also be set up during the festival to show off their work. There is a festival shuttle from Gloucester High School for those who’d rather not drive. The festival is at 6509 Main Street and a full schedule and ticket information can be found at daffodilfestivalva.org or by calling (804) 693-2355. Soothing, peaceful music at the Williamsburg Symphony By Wesley Wright The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra is having a piano virtuoso concert in late March, one of several they have throughout the year. Keeping consistent programming in the Williamsburg area is key to keeping people interested, said Carolyn Keurajian, executive director of the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra. “We really try to have something each month,” she said. “We try to keep it diverse.” This month’s concert features Alessio Bax, a highly regarded Italian pianist who has played around the world and been featured on National Public Radio. Bax released an album of soothing, peaceful music in January 2016 called Lullabies for Mila, songs he played in honor of his daughter.

‘Botticelli and The Search for the Divine’ By Heather Bridges

WANT TO GO? They journeyed from Italy to Williamsburg and will soon travel to Boston, but for one more month, several works by famed Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli will remain on display at the Muscarelle Museum. “Botticelli and the Search for the Divine: Florentine Painting between the Medici and the Bonfires of the Vanities,” including 16 of Botticelli’s works, opened at the Muscarelle in February and will remain on display through April 6, when it travels to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Among the featured paintings is “Venus,” isolating the iconic figure from Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” against a dark background. It is one of only two known isolated Venuses in the world. The works come from churches and museums in six Italian cities, including Florence, Milan and Venice. In addition to Botticelli’s paintings, the exhibition includes six paintings by his master, Filippo Lippi, paintings by Botticelli’s student and his master’s son Filippino Lippi and a handful of other works. Upon visiting the museum, viewers will travel through three galleries, glimpsing not only the beauty of Botticelli’s work but the arc of his career. Cultural attaché for the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., Renato Miracco stated in a news release that the exhibit “will be the largest and most important exhibition of its type ever organized in the United States.”

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations focus on music, dance – and a bit ‘o beer By Brandy Centolanza St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Irish culture and customs, and local musicians and dance groups have plenty of fun in store for the holiday. The Williamsburg division (the John Cardinal O’Connor division) of the Irish-American affinity group Ancient Order of the Hibernians will sponsor a number of community activities to honor Celtic roots. In partnership with the Williamsburg Regional Library, the group will host a free movie as part of the Celtic Film Series reflecting Irish and Irish-American culture. 20

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2017

In addition, one of Hibernians’ members, Frank Gleason, is a band member of the local Irish music group Fiddler’s Green. The band has three performances scheduled in March in time for St. Patrick’s Day. “As Irish-Americans, in addition to enjoying a party, we feel it’s important to celebrate our common roots in Ireland to honor all those who came before us,” said Patrick Golden, president of the local organization. “They gave us a heritage of storytelling, music, strong families, and a strong religious tradition that we try to reflect and honor throughout the year.” Another popular Celtic musical group, Poisoned

Dwarf, has two concerts planned for St. Patrick’s Day, including one at The Kimball Theatre. Audiences like Irish music because “it is enjoyable, energetic, and cheery,” said Poisoned Dwarf band member Thomas DeRose. “It really lifts people’s spirits. I enjoying playing the music, and any time we can play with the band it really makes me happy.” Meanwhile, local Irish Dance studios plan to celebrate the holiday with special performances. Dancers from the Rose & Sword Academy of Irish Dance on Strawberry Plains Road will be demonstrating at the 2nd Sundays Art & Music Festival in downtown Williamsburg in March. “St. Patrick’s Day history is very compelling and Irish history is very fascinating,” said Kathy Nelson, one of the certified Irish dance instructors with the academy. “Folks love to hear stories and legends of Ireland, and they love the varying styles of Irish dance that we do.” The Nelson Academy of Irish Dance, which just opened in Toano, will offer special classes. “The Irish were such a huge part of the beginnings of our country and influenced so much of our

performing arts from bluegrass and mountain music to tap dance on Broadway,” said Daniel Nelson, owner and director. “Clogging has its origins in Irish dance as well.” There will be no green beer, but local breweries will have entertainment and special activities for St. Patrick’s Day. Alewerks Brewing Company, Virginia Beer Company, and Brass Cannon Brewery all plan to release a special edition beer for the holiday. “I think the popularity of St. Patrick’s Day is largely attached to the fact that it is dedicated entirely to going out and having a good time,” said Brass Cannon brewer and owner Scott Kennedy. “On St. Patrick’s Day, you just go out and have fun.” One of the most anticipated events for the holiday is ShamRock the ‘Burg, sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg. The event, a St. Patrick’s Day tradition since 2011, will be held March 17 and will include live Irish music, Irish beer, and corned beef and cabbage. Proceeds from ShamRock the ‘Burg benefit local charities. The fun kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Building, 401 N. Boundary St. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2017

Berrett’s has been playing favorites with locals for decades By Brandy Centolanza For more than 30 years, Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill in downtown Williamsburg has been a favorite hangout for locals, particularly students at the College of William and Mary. Richard Carr, a managing partner and the restaurant’s certified executive chef, has been with Berret’s since August 1985. He came aboard following graduation from the America Culinary Federation’s apprentice program and stints at various restaurants in Richmond. “Williamsburg has always had good food, good restaurants,” Carr said. “I think the restaurant business is an exciting business. Every day there is a new challenge. I also think the people I work with are the best part about it.” Berret’s specializes in fresh regional seafood. The restaurant’s signature items include the crab cakes and she-crab soup as well as shrimp, blue crab, scallops, oysters and tuna. “I would say seventy-five percent of our menu is seafood, but our non-seafood items also exceed expectations,” Carr said. Last year, Berret’s added a Happy Oyster Hour, during which patrons can enjoy local York River oysters from oyster farmer Tommy Leggett. Carr’s goal was to sell 100,000 oysters, which the restaurant did in December. “We had a big celebration for the 100,000th 22

oyster, which was very fun,” Carr said. “It’s neat because he comes and talks about his oysters and people love that.” Berret’s switches up the menu twice a year, offering seasonal options for the cooler and warmer months. The children’s menu is also popular, and features crab cakes, Mahi sandwiches, and salmon fillets in addition to kid favorites like chicken tenders and pizza. “We have a collection of ideas, we follow trends

to see what is exciting and new, we see what other restaurants are serving, and we talk to our servers about what people want to see on the menu,” said Carr. “The children’s menu actually started with my own kids.” The Taphouse Grill offers a more casual dining experience outdoors and is open April through October. On the menu are grilled fish, rotisserie chicken, steaks, salads, and burgers as well as Virginia beers and wines. Entertainment at Berret’s includes a Blues Brunch on Sundays and musicians on the patio at The Taphouse Grill nightly Wednesday through Sunday as well as cornhole tournaments on Mondays. The second annual College of William and Mary pint night celebrating graduating seniors will take place in April, and flight nights on Thursday evenings will highlight various beers from local breweries. “We’ve had people who’ve met here at the Taphouse Grill, got married, and are now bringing their kids,” Carr said. “We like to think of ourselves as a locals’ restaurant, where family, friends, neighbors, and others in the community come, but we also have tourists who come out.” Berret’s also hosts a blue crab race over Labor Day weekend, with proceeds going toward local breast cancer research and a scholarship fund named in honor of Tom Austin, the restaurant’s former general partner, who passed away in 2015. “It’s always a fun time,” said Carr. With spring and the reopening of Taphouse Grill for the season just around the corner, Carr is looking forward to what more is in store. “We are anticipating an exciting 2017,” said Carr. “We are always looking for ways we can do things better so that we don’t become stagnant. Ingredients 1 cup coarsely chopped yellow onion 1 cup coarsely chopped celery ½ gallon whole milk 6 ounces blue crab roe, picked clean ½ lb. butter (2 sticks) ¾ cup plus 2 Tbsp. flour ¼ lb. fresh special crabmeat, picked through and shell pieces removed ½ cup sherry or brandy 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. white pepper

Directions Purée the onions and celery in a food processor until smooth. Strain out as much liquid as possible. In a saucepan, heat the milk, puréed onions and celery, along with the crab roe, until it reaches a boil. In a separate pan, over low heat, melt the butter and add the flour, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat. (making a roux) Add this roux to the slowly boiling milk mixture and stir constantly until the milk begins to thicken and returns to a boil. At the first sign of a boil, remove from heat and continue to stir until smooth and thick. Add crabmeat, sherry, salt and pepper. Season additionally to taste. For a thinner consistency, add some heated half and half to the finished soup. ©The information provided above is intended for individual, private use only. The Yorktown Cabin Fever Series is in full swing and features musicians of all genres. The series kicked off in January and ends on March 2. Concerts take place at Riverwalk Landing in historic Yorktown and feature local musicians in an informal and friendly setting. “It’s fun. We get a lot of folks who come year after year. It gets them out the house,” said Kevin Ritchie, York County Parks, Recreation and Tourism event planner. The series, which is in its ninth year, started on Jan. 19, with a performance by the Doug Dunn Band. The group featured four of Hampton Roads top musicians, whose music has jazz and blues influences. On. Feb. 2, Rockin’Vets was the featured group. All the members of Rockin’Vets are veterans of the military music programs and perform country music and a variety of other styles. The series will conclude on March 2 with the Hot House Band. Hot House combines the unique talents of five local musicians who perform a blend of pop, classic rock, country, blues, jazz, Motown, and rhythms & blues. Ritchie said the free concert averages about 100 people. Seating for the Cabin Fever

concerts is available on a firstcome, first-served basis. The Hot House Band concert will begin on March 2 at 7 p.m. Doors will open no earlier than 6:30 p.m. “It’s a real nice night. There are some interactions with the bands and the audience and that makes it unique,” Ritchie said.

living & retiring here

Retired doesn’t mean stay-at-home By Brandy Centolanza Williamsburg is surrounded by towns with their own history, art, culture and uniqueness. Day trips to nearby attractions provide senior citizens with a chance to eat, shop, sightsee, and explore a new place while meeting and making new friends. Amy Fiedor coordinates activities and trips for seniors through The Lounge, a program at the James City County Recreational Center. Seniors partake in monthly trips to destinations all within a drive of two and half hours or less. Previous trips include Mt. Vernon; Monticello; Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach; Chrysler Hall in Norfolk; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond; 34

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2017

and Fredericksburg. Seniors do not need to belong to The Lounge to tag along. “The trips are very popular,” said Fiedor. “It’s a great way to socialize and meet new people. It’s a great way to see local attractions they might not know about. It’s also a good way to travel worry-free because they don’t have to worry about driving.” Peggy DeVivo has gone on day trips through both The Lounge as well as Verena at The Reserve, the 55+ community where she lives. “I’ve only been living here seven months, so I thought it would be a good way to get to know the area,” said DeVivo. “I went on a trip to the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, and it was fantastic. We had a terrific day. I can’t say enough about

the trips. I enjoy going on the trips because I get to know more of my neighbors, and I think it’s one of the best ways to do that.” Sue Ivey, a resident of The Settlement at Powhatan Creek, agrees. Ivey organizes day outings for women in the neighborhood once a month. The informal group, dubbed the “Gadabouts,” has visited museums and theatres in Richmond and Norfolk, and historic sites such as Ft. Monroe in Hampton; Bacon’s Castle in Surry; and the Inn at Warner Hall and Rosewell Ruins, both in Gloucester. The trips typically also include a meal and plenty of conversation. “We’ve also done winery tours, and gone blueberry picking,” Ivey said. “There’s just so much to do between Richmond and Virginia Beach. We have a lot of fun. I don’t think we’ve gone some place that people haven’t enjoyed.” Most senior living communities offer similar excursions. Verena At The Reserve seeks input from residents about places they’d like to explore, which usually involves trips to art museums, restaurants, shows and special events, or scenic drives like to the mountains or to watch the sunset along the York or James rivers followed by a stop for ice cream. Meanwhile, Williamsburg Landing sponsors longer treks for its residents in warmer months to places such as Washington, DC or Philadelphia. Oleta Coach Lines, Inc. also offers tour and bus trip packages to places near and far, including

the Eastern Shore as well as New York City. “Anyone that wants to go can go, but I would say that seventyfive percent of those who go are seniors,” said Matt Smith, gen-

eral manager for Oleta. “A lot of seniors just love the trips.”

local business profile

Backyard Birder

keeps nature close to home By Brandy Centolanza On a recent afternoon, Melinda Cousins, proprietor of Backyard Birder in Quarterpath Crossing Shopping Center, greeted customers with smiles and hugs, eagerly answered any and all birding questions, and assisted patrons with carrying their purchases to their cars. It’s that extra attention and care that’s been behind the success of Backyard Birder since Cousins opened the business in 2015. “I think our knowledgeable customer service makes us unique,” she said. Backyard Birder specializes in products for 36

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2017

wild-bird watching and feeding. The business carries high-quality bird seed in a variety of blends, depending on the type of bird people wish to attract. Song birds such as cardinals, bluebirds, chickadees, finches, and the Tufted Titmouse like seed, while woodpeckers prefer feeding on suet cakes. “Birding is one of the most popular hobbies in the United States,” said Cousins. Her shop also carries numerous birdhouses (including houses for owls and ducks), bird feeders, nest boxes, poles and hanging feeders, birdbaths, books and manuals, binoculars, and other birding tools and equipment. “I am very proud we are a locally-owned,

independently-owned business,” Cousins said. Cousins grew up helping her father feed birds in the backyard of their Pennsylvania home. She further developed her interest in birding while studying at Mary Baldwin College and later while serving in the United States Marines Corps, and again at Virginia Tech. “I took a field biology course at Mary Baldwin, which included botany and ornithology,” she said. “I really enjoyed getting out in the field and studying birds.” Cousins relocated to Williamsburg in 2012. Her backyard consists of 14 birdfeeders and four bird baths. “I am out in my backyard every day,” she said. “I will sit outside or in my sun room and just watch the birds. During the snowstorm in January, I spotted a Baltimore Oriole in the backyard. I like to use different feed and see what attracts to what.” Her favorite bird is the Whitebreasted Nuthatch. “I like its call,” she said. “Whenever you hear it, you can’t help but smile because it sounds like they are laughing, especially when they are chitter-chattering.” In addition to minding the store, Cousins is also a member of the Williamsburg Bird Club, whose members get together for bird walks and presentations. Club members receive a ten percent discount at Backyard Birder, while Cousins also has a rewards program for her customers. “The typical customer loves being outside, being in nature, and contributing to the environment in a positive way,” she said. “They love birds, and bird chatter. I am the same way. I find birds very fascinating because of their ability to fly, their habits, their beautiful songs and calls, their vibrant colors. I love their ability to be present with us, and the natural

beauty they add to our environment just by being there. I find it very peaceful.” Cousins hopes to expand the business online, offering customers an opportunity to purchase products on the computer and pick up in the store. She also wants to ramp up her community outreach by offering more educational talks about birds. “I have one other employee right now, Shelley, and we are both avid backyard birders,” she said. “If you have any questions, come talk with us. You can put your hands on our products and

see how they operate. Experiment at home and see what works for you. I would encourage you to let your backyards go natural. The birds really appreciate that, and you’ll be rewarded with more bird activity.”

things to do

Williamsburg Farmers Market back in business March 4 By Troy Jefferson The Williamsburg Farmers Market is ready for another year of providing fresh food to the area. Tracy Herner, the market manager, said the preparation begins long before March when the market opens. “We visit each and every

Dream

vendor each and every season to learn about them and it gives us a chance to verify their authenticity,” Herner said. Herner said in January that she was training her vendors on marketing and food safety. When it comes to choosing a vendor, Herner said finding the right mix is key. “We have an ideal blend of vendors that we really want which includes about 65 percent of producers, 28 percent of bakers and the rest falls into an “other” category like knife sharpening and soaps,” Herner said. The Williamsburg Farmers Market will sell Kombucha, which is fermented tea, for the first time this year. “Most of the oldies but goodies are coming back -- 98% of our vendors are coming back.” Herner

said. “Other than the Kombucha there will be a few new items to be announced later. We’re always looking for the next, best, latest and greatest thing.” Herner said the Williamsburg Farmers Market is a must-stop because of its ability to create lasting memories. “What we’re trying so hard to do is to provide an experience that people can’t get at a grocery store,” Herner said. “There’s something to be said about buying your food from somebody who from start to finish was the person who made it.” The Williamsburg Farmers Market is open on Merchants Square on Saturdays beginning March 4 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Pi Day adds up to sweet, savory delights

By Amanda Williams In 2009, Pi Day became a nationally recognized celebration of math around the nation when the House of Representatives passed resolution 224. What does that mean eight years later? Deals and discounts on all things pi(e) related.

Pi Day is a celebration of math and mathematicians. The Greek symbol Pi is a constant that continues forever without repeating itself or creating a pattern. Most people can’t recite the numerals past 3.14. Jamestown Pie Company has been a staple on Jamestown Road for more than a decade.

They serve up gourmet pies, pot pies and pizza pies. On March 14, they’ll ring in Pi Day with three specials. Manager Volkan Mukus said they’ll have a deal on regular pies — buy one get one half-priced — and on their mini pies, which are usually $7.50 each. Instead, for pie day they’ll sell two for $10, he said.

History is a verb at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown® and Jamestown Settlement—where you’re an active participant in the great American story.

If you’re in the mood for pecans, buying three pecan pies will get you one free, Mukus said. Mukus said the shop doesn’t usually do specials for Pi Day, but they’re always busy anyway. This year, he said, “We’ll do something nice.” Jamestown Pie Company specializes in dessert pies, both nutty and fruity, as well as pizzas and pot pies. They are at 1804 Jamestown Road. For a savory pie deal on March 14, head over to Blaze Pizza in New Town. The pizza chain will be offering their pizza pies for $3.14 at all locations to celebrate. At Blaze, customers build their own 11-inch pizzas from scratch and watch it cook in the oven for 180 seconds — hence the “fast fire’d” slogan. The location on Main Street will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Other local shops and res-

taurants serving up pies are the Old Chickahominy House at Jamestown Road and Route 199, Charly’s Airport Restaurant by the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport and Carrot Tree Kitchens with locations in Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.

Positive results I knew that advertising my new small business in the Williamsburg Magazine would be a wise decision. I was right! The response has been so positive and encouraging. The magazine ad definitely got the word out that there is a new consignment store in town and the map included in the magazine led customers and consigners right to my door. I have always been a fan of the Magazine and found it to be a wonderful resource. It is also a great supporter of the small business owner and I am proud to advertise with them. -Joni Spangler, Owner Joni's Consign & Design

2016 Williamsburg Film Festival Guest Stars First Row: Jacqueline Scott, Roberta Shore, Audrey Dalton, Bobbi Beard, Belinda Gail Second Row: Larry Maurice, Calvin Hampton, R.W. Hampton, Ed Faulkner, Ed Beard, Don Collier Photo courtesy of the Williamsburg Film Festival

Williamsburg Film Festival enters final season By Wesley Wright The Williamsburg Film Festival has been a great event for those who enjoy movies from yesteryear; this year’s festival – the 21st – will also be the last one. “We show Westerns movies primarily, and there just isn’t that much interest in them anymore. Their time has passed,” said Ray Smith, a North Carolina resident who has helped organize the festival. Smith spoke fondly of what the festival has done for the community of people who enjoy seeing older films and the people who starred in them. “We really had a good 21year run,” he said, adding that he knew of other festivals in the area that saw the same trends and were thinking of shutting down in the next few years.

One of the reasons people still show up is to meet notable actors in person, Smith said. The festival is slated to have several local stars -- Rosemary Forsyth and Alex Cord -- and festival attendees might have a chance to meet them personally. “You just might be able to speak with these people,” he said. “There aren’t too many places you can still do that.” WANT TO GO?
