WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2014
On March 9, Daylight Saving Time begins. For me, that means it’s official—Spring is here. Of course, it isn’t really Spring until March 21, but as soon as we have longer days, I get the feeling things are looking up, especially after our unusually cold and snowy winter. This issue contains a brief rundown of some of our area golf courses. With the weather warming up, it is an ideal time to get out on the links. Another great occasion in March is St. Patrick’s Day. It’s fun to celebrate, even if it isn’t your heritage. Consider a St. Paddy’s Day meal out or even a green beverage. This month the magazine features a variety of interesting people and businesses. The Women in Business series continues with Diane Webb, owner of Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in Monticello Marketplace. Pet Corner features the Animal Clinic and Wellness Center on Penniman Road, and the featured chef this month is Francesco Fiorello of Francesco’s Ristorante in Lightfoot. Janie Lisagor, owner of the Goddard School in New Town, is featured in Head of the Class. Don’t forget that this month welcomes the opening of Busch Gardens for another season. It’s a great place to see shows and have fun with friends and family. Enjoy the month!

what’s cooking? Chef Francesco Fiorello, Francesco’s Ristorante Italiano
Creating the flavor of Italy By Ann M. Efimetz Francesco Fiorello began his career in restaurants when he was a boy growing up in Italy. He came to the United States at age 15 and began working in restaurants. Over the years, he learned the fine art of creating delicious recipes with Old World flair. He has put his expertise to work at his restaurant, Francesco’s, located in the Pavilion Shops in Lightfoot. Since 2008 Fiorello has been preparing his artisan entrees and other specialties for those who visit the restaurant for the first time, or those who are regular customers. “I love what I do,” Fiorello said in a recent interview at his restaurant. “Cooking is my passion.” His excitement for preparing and presenting distinctive dishes is evident in the way he works in the kitchen, using his keen sense of taste to create the fare. “Putting things together, putting ingredients in the pan is exciting,” he said. “To have the guests say that it is good makes me very happy.” Fiorello said his approach to cooking doesn’t incorporate careful measuring or weighing. “It is by my eye,” he said. “It is by the taste. It is old school.” It is that ability that allows him to approach food as an art, similar to a musician creating a piece of music. “Sometimes I sit down and I think about ingredients and a way to cook something,” he said. “I get up and I try the recipe in the kitchen and I may come up with a new dish. I am thinking every second.” Far from complacent in the kitchen, he continues to blend both traditional cooking with new techniques. That translates into selections including Seafood Cannelloni, Veal Estate or Ravioli di Baronessa. He regularly switches menu items and offers new specials to entice guests.
“I cook from my soul,” he said. Fiorello is never too busy to leave the kitchen and converse with the patrons. “I talk to my guests and make sure that everything is okay with their food and experience. I enjoy seeing the expressions on their faces.” The intimate size of the restaurant allows staff to create the dishes individually and serve them fresh from the stove. Everything is cooked fresh to order. “The meal you get here will look good, it will smell good and it will be hot,” he said. “You do not get a cold meal here—the steam will come off of your plate.” Fiorello recently renovated the restaurant, updating décor and making it more comfortable for guests. This spring the restaurant will offer a full liquor menu to accommodate guests. He hopes more people will try Francesco’s and will return. “My goal is for people to want to come to the restaurant because the taste here is delicious,” he said. “You may be able to get similar selections somewhere else, but my taste is unique.”

women in business Diane Webb, Merle Norman
Best face forward By Ann M. Efimetz Confucius is credited with saying, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Those words could easily apply to Diane Webb, owner of Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in the Monticello Marketplace. “I feel very grateful, very blessed and very fortunate,” Webb said recently. “People sometime ask me that after fourteen years if I am tired, but I say ‘No.’ I love my business. There is not a day I don’t want to come in here. I have the best customers in the world. I have made lots of friends and have made my job really pleasant.” Webb originally opened the studio at Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center where she stayed for three years. Then the chance to move to Monticello Marketplace presented itself, and it proved auspicious. She has continued to grow a new client base while keeping loyal longtime customers who regularly pass their affinity for the Merle Norman 20
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2014
line of beauty products through generations. “I have a loyal Merle Norman base, and those who have used the products and know the company,” she said. “Merle Norman is a company that has been around for almost eighty-five years. It is one of those products that get passed down within families— the grandma used it and then the daughters and then the granddaughters.” In addition to the product reputation, Webb and her staff pride themselves with personalized customer service, which people seem to appreciate. Alice Stellabotte, longtime employee and Carol Ann Brooks help Webb provide the individualized service. “They are my right and my left arms,” Webb said. “They are great and I couldn’t do it without either one of them. “ But owning a business has its share of challenges, especially when tough times affect the economy. A few years ago when the economic downturn hit, Webb began thinking of a way
to diversify. What she came up with proved a boon for her and her customers—selling designer handbags on a consignment basis. “It has been my best idea yet,” she said. “I have close to eight hundred consignors and have sold more than two thousand bags. It has been a lot of fun for me and I have enjoyed the diversity of adding something else to the business. I get excited talking about it.” Webb, who is a cancer survivor, provides women with a place to buy wigs, hair wraps and turbans. She is available to those who are facing cancer by offering products to help. Owning a business comes with its share of responsibilities, all of which Webb embraces. “I love it all,” she said. “I like the business side of it, if not more than being on the floor selling. You have to work smart and you can’t think of it as a glamorous thing, owning your own business. It is a lot of hard work.” Photo by Ann M. Efimetz

Prescription for success By Ann M. Efimetz
Technology has made refilling prescriptions as easy as picking up the smartphone and using an automated system. People have become accustomed to using technology to refill prescriptions and find information about their medications online through Internet resources. As much as the industry has changed and technology keeps moving forward, old-fashioned customer service is still part of a pharmacist’s job. For the past 33 years, T.W. Taylor, pharmacist at Professional Pharmacy on Monticello Avenue, has worked behind the counter filling prescriptions and dispensing valuable information to patients, one-on-one. On any given day, customers will find Taylor conferring with customers on a variety of topics relating to their prescriptions. iptions. “Customers have become better informed,”” Taylor said recently. “But they also need more help navigating on through the information est to determine what is best for them.” maProfessional Pharmad cy of Williamsburg and urg its partner, Williamsburg e, Drug in McLaws Circle, erhave been providing service and products sincee 1895. Providing firstrate customer service iss ff something that the staff takes very seriously. yThe breadth of Taynlor’s responsibilities encompasses everything from monitoring the inventory on the pharmacy shelves to consulting with doctors and patients
about the best treatment options. “My job also includes working with the other pharmacy technicians and staff to ensure that the pharmacy is meeting all the regulatory and patient quality controls that all pharmacies have to keep track of these days,” he said. He has seen trends emerge in the industry including the ease of online and smartphone prescription ordering, the use of more generic drugs. Often the use of automation has helped Taylor be able to provide more patientfocused activity. For Taylor, it is satisfying to be able to help people maneuver the information that can be overwhelming. “I like the ability to improve people’s lives through providing the correct medications,” he said. “I like to provide outstanding consultative information and customer service.”

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE!
March See & Do • Women’s History Month is observed throughout the month of March with programs that highlight the broad experiences of women during the American Revolutionary era. From the bedchamber to the battlefield, parlor to tobacco fields with stops in businesses and trades that line the streets, the women of Virginia partook of every aspect of the birth pangs that gave life to the freedoms we enjoy today. Their contributions to our nation’s founding are varied and compelling. Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket or Good Neighbor pass required. Program information available at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, 101 Visitor Center Drive or by visiting www.colonialwilliamsburg.com • Jocelyn Oldham performs a live acoustic mix of popular classics and today’s hits in the lounge of the Williamsburg Lodge Saturdays in March from 7 – 11 p.m. No ticket required. 310 S. England St. • Women in Portraits – guided tour of how women have been portrayed in 18th- and 19th-century portraits. 10:30 – 11:15 on various dates throughout Women’s History Month. A Colonial Williamsburg ticket, Good Neighbor pass or museum ticket is required. 326 W. Francis St. • At the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, “A Rich and Varied Culture: The Material World of the Early South” features approximately 350 objects drawn from Colonial Williamsburg’s collection as well as from 14 private collectors and 10 other institutions. The furniture, paintings, silver and pewter, ceramics, architectural elements and other types of objects on view in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum showcase the state of
research and discovery in the field today. A Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket, Good Neighbor pass or museum admission ticket is required. 326 W. Francis St. • “Beer, Ale and Malt Liquor: Brewing in 18th-century England” – 5:30 p.m. in the Hennage Auditorium in the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Beer historian Ron Pattinson explains every aspect of brewing – ingredients, beer styles, brewing techniques and technological advances in the strange world of 18th-century English brewing, including the beer that was all the rage in the 1700s: London Porter. A Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket, Good Neighbor pass or museum admission is required. 326 W. Francis St. • Friday Night Seafood Feast at Traditions restaurant in the Williamsburg Lodge – an evening buffet highlighted by a variety of delicious sea fare with seasonal sides. $38.00 adults; $18.95 ages 6-12; ages 5 and under free; plus tax and gratuity. Fridays from 5 – 9 p.m. Open to the public. 310 S. England St. • The ninth season of Revolutionary City debuts Monday, March 17, with interactive dramatic episodes presented throughout the day portraying events that occurred in Revolutionary–era Williamsburg in the locations where they took place. • The 2014 version of Colonial Williamsburg’s highly successful interactive alternate reality game, “RevQuest: The Old Enemy,” begins Monday, March 17 and continues daily through Thanksgiving.

Carolina Furniture anew By Ann M. Efimetz
When you walk into the new showroom at Carolina Furniture on Richmond Road, you get the sense you have walked into a light, open and spacious home. A recent 5,000 square foot addition has given owners Joe Steele II and his son Joe Steele III the chance to display more of the furniture that has distinguished the business for the past 35 years. Since the showroom opened in late January following six months of construction, visitors and locals have stopped in. “It has been incredible,” Joe Steele III said recently in an interview at the store. “We have had many great old friends and clients come in and see the product in the new open environment. They have been appreciative of us bringing pretty things to Williamsburg.” The visibility of the building has been enhanced through the project, as the front of the store is clearly visible from Richmond Road. “We have seen a lot of curiosity that has brought them in the doors,” he said. “Once inside, I think they realize how relevant the product mix is for them.” Carolina Furniture carries pieces from 400 manufacturers ranging from contemporary to traditional. “We show a bit of everything, which is why the square footage is so important,” Steele said, adding that some customers make special trips from Washington to see the various brands offered under one roof. “To have this right here in Williamsburg is a huge luxury.” Customers can have questions about design answered immediately by Carolina’s staff. “We have started incorporating on- the-spot interior design,” Steele said. “Our associates are not just sales people—they are designers, they are educators.” Detail has been paid to each aspect of the new building from the inside to out. A specially designed cupola rests on the top of the building, with a weathervane reminiscent of the Wren Building at the College of William and Mary, where Joe Steele II attended.
And once inside, customers can sit comfortably in chairs, sofas to get an idea of what the pieces may look like at home. “It is not a museum, it is not a stage, and it is not unlivable or stuffy,” Steele said. “We wanted to keep the residential scale because it helps the client envision how the forms will look in their home.”

a great find
This month’s Great Find is a cloisonné inlay coffee table at Chickadee’s located in the Pavilion Shops in Lightfoot. The distinctive table was recently acquired by store owner Julia Carter from an estate sale. The piece, inlaid with three colorful cloisonné medallions, has an undeniable Asian flair. The black finish is decorated with gold flourishes, but the centerpiece is undoubtedly the cloisonné. On Feb. 26, the table will be priced at $399. Photos by Ann M. Efimetz

retiring in williamsburg
Getting the scoop on greater Williamsburg Community Leadership Service is a popular program sponsored by the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance. The mission of Community Leadership Service is to provide retirees and prospective retirees a broader understanding of the people, needs, governing bodies, and key institutions of our area. It is also designed to encourage participants to pursue volunteer leadership roles in the community. The biennial program began with an orientation session in late January, and has met every Tuesday. It will conclude in April with a wrap-up and recognition ceremony. Topics discussed have included area history, environment, healthcare, courts and public safety, education, government and the military. This month participants will get to learn about area arts and culture through a mini tour of the Muscarelle Museum. They will participate in a presentation by museum director Aaron DeGroft and several board members.
Additionally, they will meet Janna Hymes, music director and conductor of the Williamsburg Symphonia. She will speak about its musical contribution to our rich cultural environment. There will also be a behind-the-scenes tour of Colonial Williamsburg’s repository of period furniture and artwork and the restoration labs. Later in the month, participants will visit the Historic Triangle Community Services Building to hear about the “Economic Realities of Williamsburg.” They will be given an overview of the United Way, as well as the many organizations with which it partners. Participants will also visit Williamsburg United Methodist Church and tour the Respite Care Center, and learn more from a sampling of area organizations including Williamsburg Area Faith in Action, that provide outreach and safety. For more information about the next class of the Community Leadership Service, call 229-6511.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Janie Lisagor Owner, The Goddard School By Ann M. Efimetz How long have you been at your job? The school will celebrate five years in June. How many students are enrolled? Between 100 and 200 children in the building, depending on the day. What is the school philosophy? Our philosophy is all about how children learn best- through play and fun activities, lovingly guided by highly trained teachers. The research proves this method works. As a parent myself I know how the world can seem so much better when everything’s falling into place for your child. That’s why Goddard School owners are on-site everyday working with educators and parents to make this school the next best thing to home.

What do you like best about your job? There are many things I like about my job. I like getting to know the families. We have such loving and friendly parents and grandparents. However, the kids are the best. When I see there are thriving and happy then I know we are doing our job. I love getting to know the children they are truly inspiring and heartwarming as well. What is the biggest challenge? The biggest challenge is always looking for better ways to improve our children’s experience. How we can improve and what other things we can bring to the experience to make it better. continued on page 55 WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2014

What do you think has been the biggest change in education in the last 20 years? With the emphasis placed on standardized testing in the schools, sometimes the hands-on learning is lost. As a former school teacher, I know many teachers and parents feel this as well. They (teachers) want to do more with this type of teaching but feel there isn’t time with the push to learn the standards of learning. I do understand the importance of some type of measure to gauge the children’s learning but one size does not fit all and will accurately show what a child knows or is capable of. What would you like to see? I would like to see other options alongside of standardized testing that are options for children to show their ability and retention of knowledge that carry just as much weight as standardized testing does. Children learn in many different ways and testing should be administered in different ways also to reflect that. Are there plans at the school for expansion or new programs? Many Goddard Schools across the country offer private kindergarten, first grade and many offers before and after school age care. We are looking at the different options and which will be suit the needs of our families.
