Quilts for a cause %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

The Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs is holding a spring fundraiser, “The Quilter’s Garden.” The event will be held Tuesday, March 24 at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse. The luncheon will feature an extensive display of quilts including a “yoyo quilt spread,” a whimsical ﬂeece quilt, quilted clothing and a vintage handkerchief quilt, belonging to Rose Marie Crocco, the event chair. “I had 94 handkerchiefs given to me when my grandmother died. She had been a waitress in a deli in Pittsburgh,” Crocco said. “She always had a different one on her white uniform each day she worked. In addition, she crocheted beautiful borders around many of them. I didn't want to keep them in my cedar chest, so Beth Filko from Colonial Heritage designed a quilt for our guest room bed.” Colonial Heritage residents Connie and Jim Thompson will present a program, “Garden Quilts.” The Thompsons are Master Gardeners and are quilt makers and collectors. “There are so many quilters in our area, and I thought this event would provide a venue for anyone wanting to display the

quilts and tell the story behind them, as I will mine,” Crocco said. Tickets are $25. A portion of the proceeds will beneﬁt the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. Doors open at 11:15 a.m. Those who attend will have the chance to purchase “opportunity tickets” for a wall hanging made by Loy Holt, council president, as well as a chance to win themed gift baskets. Welcome March! Finally! Springtime arrives this month! It is always a wonderful event to turn the calendar from February to March, knowing warmer weather is ahead. It’s not too early to be thinking about spring activities. You will find a feature in this issue about the upcoming Daffodil Festival in Gloucester, which is just a short drive from Williamsburg. The event isn’t until April, but it is good to plan now. Our chef’s feature takes a different focus this month as we highlight Alice Cooke, owner of CakeAlicious in New Town. Cooke has been creating marvelous sweet treats for birthdays, weddings and other special occasions for years. She has also recently started making delicious, authentic gelato at her store. In our Head of the Class feature you will meet an extraordinary young lady, Tina Selby. Over the Christmas holidays, the Liberty University student traveled to Haiti to bring cheer to hundreds of children who otherwise would not have had a holiday treat. She is planning a summer mission trip to Africa, and plans to pursue missionary work in the future. This month, you can also read about the newest Alzheimer’s care unit in our area, Clare Bridge at Chambrel of Williamsburg. This cutting edge facility offers the highest level of care for those challenged with memory issues. Have a dog that you would like to obey better? You may consider the Merrimac Dog Club, which is featured in our Pet Corner. The club meets regularly in Hampton. It is a short ride away, and the club offers many activities that are fun for dogs and their owners. Don’t miss the CDR Bid n’ Buy Auction this month at Jamestown High School. That event raises money for area kids and it provides an afternoon of fun. And speaking of great bargains! Visit the monthly flea market at the Historic Triangle Community Center on Waller Mill Road on March 28. The event features a variety of wonderful attic treasures and yard sale finds! Enjoy the month. Get outside and take in the awakening flowers and trees throughout greater Williamsburg. It is like no other time of year.

Leonardo da Vinci exhibit continues at Muscarelle Museum of Art %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW] “Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty” features about 30 of the master’s works, including a self-portrait at age 53 that has never previously been shown. The exhibit continues this month at the Muscarelle Museum, located on the campus of the College of William and Mary. The exhibit also features eight works by da Vinci’s rival, Michelangelo. That is being done to compare and contrast the thinking of the two masters. The exhibit is being offered through the Muscarelle’s continued partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Following the exhibit’s debut here, it will travel to Massachusetts for an April 15 opening, which is da Vinci’s birthday.

Those who attend will be able to take in da Vinci’s drawings that were lent from the Ufﬁzi museum in Florence and the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, Italy. The works of Michelangelo are on loan from the Casa Buonarroti in Florence. Following the exhibits, the pieces will return to Europe. Parking on Jamestown Road, similar to what church attendees do on Sundays, is being offered. Museum hours will also be expanded, offering evening hours on Wednesdays to accommodate families. When Alice Cooke’s children were little, she wanted to create birthday cakes for them as special as the occasions. That desire was the impetus of her participation in a local cake decorating class. Once there, she began learning the technique and artistry of cake creation and decoration. She enjoyed it so much that she began planning for the future. “I got hooked,” Cooke said with a laugh in a recent interview at CakeAlicious, located in New Town. “I wanted to start a business, but it took several years to make that happen.” After seven years of building a clientele through a home-based business, in 2011, Cooke opened a store on Route 17 in Yorktown. In Dec. 2013, the business moved to New Town as CakeAlicious. Since, by word-of-mouth, Cooke has been creating sweet and sometimes elaborate confections for families, brides—and even celebrities. “We have been around for eleven years,” she said. “We started slowly and steady doing birthday cakes. Then some of the people we had made birthday cakes for knew people who were getting married. And that is how it blossomed.” Cooke approaches each culinary project with the same

dedication to detail, whether it is a simple birthday cake to an ornate wedding cake. Every cake is made with fresh ingredients. “All my recipes are from scratch,” she said. “I don’t know how many years it took me to come up with my own icing recipe. It was years. I don’t like whipped icing and I don’t like the heavy butter cream. Mine is right in the middle.” Cooke credited much of her zeal for baking to her grandmother. As a child, Cooke learned many techniques and recipes in her grandma’s kitchen. “I spent a lot of time with my grandmother when I was growing up,” Cooke said. “She was into everything— she made a mean biscuit.” Recently, Cooke embarked on another sweet journey. CakeAlicious now offers homemade gelato, using authentic Italian recipes on hightech equipment that turns out a creamy, distinctive product. “We were exposed to gelato at an international conference in 2010 in Las Vegas,” she said. “I had no idea at

that time that I would have the place to be able to make it. It is so much fun to make. I like making the gelato almost as much as making cakes.” Cooke said she eventually would like to use it in cakes. “We are going to incorporate gelato into cakes,” she said. “There have been many people who have asked us about making ice cream cakes, so this would be a good ﬁt.” Additionally, CakeAlicious offers a full coffee bar and cake decorating supplies. Cooke even has plans to offer classes to pass her expertise on to other aspiring entrepreneurs or enthusiasts. “There may be other things out there,” she said. “You just never know what may come down the pike.”

Tina Selby is a young woman who recently returned from Haiti from a mission to spread Christmas cheer to children living on the island. Selby took the trip instead of returning to her Williamsburg home for the holiday season. What year are you at college and where do you attend? I am a sophomore at Liberty University in Lynchburg. 22

What is your major? Psychology major and a Global Studies minor. What year did you graduate from Bruton High? May 2013. How did you become interested in doing missionary work? After I had the opportunity to help plan a local mission trip for Kingsway Church, “Amp up the Burg.” At this trip I was able to plan sites that we volunteered at each day which included Avalon

three global studies classes to prepare me for my internship this summer.

and The Great Arc of Williamsburg. This helped me realize that doing missions type of work was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

What plans do you have for further trips? I plan on doing a nine-week internship in Narok, Kenya May 26-July 31. While there, I will be doing youth ministry training, and camp counseling for when other groups from America come over. I will also spend time teaching women a trade so that they can have sustainable income, teaching the local’s agriculture and holding VBS within the local churches.

What was the Christmas holiday like in Haiti? It is the complete opposite than America. In Haiti they do not have any of the fancy lights or decorations everywhere. We gave the children small gift bags when we went to the villages, which for most of them, would be the only Christmas gift that they will ever get due to the poverty in Haiti.

What are your long range goals? My goal is to become a full time missionary wherever God calls me, whether it is Africa, Asia, or the U.S. I will go wherever I am needed. I plan to do psychology work within orphanages and schools. I believe that there is great need to help children deal with the different traumatizing life events that have occurred in their lives at such a young age. Another long range goal would be to share the Gospel with as many people as possible.

What was the aspect of the trip that most surprised you? How much the children just wanted to be loved. Whether it was holding their hand, giving them a hug, or holding the smaller children, it made their day that we were giving them love in attention. It surprised me that even though they were obviously deprived of food, water, and shelter, it saddened me that they were also deprived of love. What was the most challenging? Adapting to the different cultural norms in Haiti. What classes are you taking to further your interest in mission work? I am currently taking

The 29th Annual Daffodil Festival will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday April 11 and noon5 p.m., Sunday, April 12 on Main Street in Gloucester.

The two-day festival is sponsored by the Daffodil Festival Council in co-operation with the Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. The event is fun for the whole family. One of the most popular events is the annual parade. It will be held rain or shine Saturday, April 11 to kick off the event. One of the highlights of the live entertainment will include two performances by Smithfield native Bria Kelly, who appeared on both “America’s Got Talent,” and “The Voice.” The festival also includes a food court and 200 vendors selling distinctive artwork, gifts and more. Each year the festival committee works to expand the festival while keeping its intimate atmosphere. “It is a great event, it really is,” Wesolowski said. Want to go? Loving the landscape Our area Master Gardeners offer local residents with a chance to learn more about how to get and keep the most beautiful landscape. The Spring Landscape Love program will get underway this month. Registration for the program opens March 15 and will run through April 15. Landscape Love includes visits by Master Gardeners to the homeowner’s yard. Visits begin late April and run through the end of May. The goal of the program is to educate homeowners on the best management practices to acquire and keep a healthy landscape. That is accomplished by: Appropriate plant selection, placement and care, efﬁcient irrigation and fertilization and pest management. Suggestions for plants will be made for areas that have slopes, prolonged shade, poor soil or high or low moisture levels.

Reducing the use of water, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides and fossil fuels by working with James City County’s WaterSmart and PRIDE programs. Suggesting appropriate plant materials and routine maintenance to ensure success by encouraging the use of native plants, trees, shrubs, compost and reuse of yard debris. Educate local citizens on the adverse environmental effects of landscaping including the use of exotic invasive species and storm water surface runoff. Establish diversiﬁed landscape practices which support habitat preservation for wildlife and a healthier environment. In designing its new guidebook, Colonial Williamsburg went big. The first full-scale renovation of the guide since 1985 comes in at more than 251 pages, including the index. The previous guide was 176 pages, according to spokeswoman Barbara Brown. The new guide is more attractive, with glossy pages and color photographs throughout. Brown said the new guide wasn’t due to the changeover in leadership from former president Colin Campbell to Mitchell Reiss. “This has been in the works for over a year,” she said. The book’s focus has changed as well. It explored what happened in Williamsburg and why it mattered. The guide reflects a change in the foundation’s approach, to consistently portray the city as it was during the American Revolution. It’s not as important now that the guide be visitor’s portable guide to Colonial Williamsburg because of technological innovations like the Explorer app, which can provide onsite, help, prices, details of programming and directions to the visitor’s phone. “We wanted our new guidebook to delve into the Revolutionary history behind the people, buildings and trades in the Historic Area,” said Bill White, vice president of productions, publications and learning ventures for Colonial Williamsburg said in a press releases announcing the release of the new guide. “The Revolution sparked on the streets of Williamsburg changed the world. This is the book to consult before and after visiting to remember that this story – Colonial Williamsburg’s story – is the story of every modern citizen devoted to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.” Paul Aron, the foundation’s director of publications noted that in 1985, the foundation was not exclusively interpreting the city as it was in the years of the Revolution. “That’s well before the Revolutionary City,” he said in a phone interview Tuesday. “Although we had added Revolutionary City information as we’d revised the old guide, this is the first guide that focuses on Williamsburg as the Revolutionary City.”

He said it also emphasizes Colonial Williamsburg’s mission of “education for citizenship.” He said the old guide was much more focused on the architectural history of the Historic Area. “The Revolutionary City” the interactive street theater program has become central to the Colonial Williamsburg experience. The books itself includes a complete history of Williamsburg during the Revolution. It also contains profiles of important Revolutionary occupants of the town, from famous figures like Washington, Henry and Jefferson to less known figures like African-American preachers Gowan Pamphlet. Chambrel opens

Clare Bridge Williamsburg for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]

Chambrel recently celebrated the grand opening of Clare Bridge Williamsburg for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care on Treyburn Drive. The new facility features 32 apartments, 28 single units and four shared. It was nearly full when it opened for residents. The local facility is one of more than 600 Alzheimer's and dementia units operated by Brookdale. The new facility is the most up to date, incorporating a program that has been researched and vetted by those who care for Alzheimer's patients. “This is a culmination of all we have learned,” said Amy Smith, division dementia care manager for Brookdale. “This represents what we have learned over time. It is very state-of-the-art.” “Everything is structured,” added John Nguyen, Chambrel business development coordinator. “Everything from meal time to physical ﬁtness is structured and is research based. Nguyen said the individualized and person-centered program is designed to meet the speciﬁc needs of those with various levels of dementia. The facility is structured to offer those who live their with success, rather than limitation. “We are going to help them do whatever they can do for as long as they can do it,” Smith explained. “We look at what our residents can do and we emphasize that.” The new facility offers a spacious dining facility, a country kitchen where residents can participate in cooking and baking, life skill stations where residents 40

can sort, play cards or games, outside areas where they can garden, a spa where they can be pampered, a beauty salon, and 3KRWRV E\ $QQ 0 (À PHW] for men, a workbench area where they can putter on projects. “When people go into a dementia care unit, it may be very sterile and institutional-looking,” Nguyen said. “What we are doing here is the complete opposite.” Offering the Alzheimer’s and dementia facility gives Chambrel the ability to provide a continuum of care to its residents. “It is pretty much a dream come true for me,” said Kathy King, director of memory care. “We know our residents best. This allows us to continue on the path that we have started with them. It just keeps them at home.”
