Fri-Sat 11am-9pm

As the temperature begins to rise, and adventurous spirits along with it, venture out and try something new – whether it’s that hobby you’ve been dying to pursue, an idea you’ve been looking to implement or that restaurant you’ve been meaning to check out. For those looking to pursue new ideas, Work Nimbly is a good place to start. Born from collaboration among three local business owners, Work Nimbly is Williamsburg’s co-working space, providing a home for independent workers and freelancers and building a community of local creatives. Another space to exercise creativity is Colonial Folk Art Studio and Gallery, offering a number of art classes and renting studio space to artists. Not to mention, it houses an eclectic collection of local and regional folk art pieces – owners Beverly and Davie Burgdorf can explain the story behind each piece. Delve into the story behind something else entirely at “Ales through the Ages,” Colonial Williamsburg’s first conference to exclusively look at the history of beer, with the help of beer experts from around the world. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, and offers an opportunity to check out nightlife in Williamsburg. Local spots like Aromas, Cogan’s Deli, Daddyo’s Tavern, Triangle and Berret’s offer a variety of live music offerings to check out on, and beyond, St. Patrick’s Day. If you like Aromas, you’ll definitely enjoy The Hound’s Tale, a restaurant recently opened by Aromas’ owners Don and Geri Pratt. With a food and drink menu unlike anything you’ll find in town, The Hound’s Tale is a culinary adventure housed in that comfortable, inviting environment Aromas is known for. Easter falls on March 27 this year. While considering options for Easter dinner, you might consider ham. The Williamsburg Magazine talks to local business owners, from Edwards Ham Shop and La Tienda, for advice on selecting, preparing and serving ham. This March, the Williamsburg Home Show returns to William and Mary Hall for the second time, with speakers and exhibitors related to all things home-oriented, from landscaping to remodeling. Also returning this year, for its 20th annual event, the Williamsburg Film Festival remains a local gem. With a focus on Hollywood’s Golden Era, the film festival offers opportunities to watch classics on a big screen, as well as meet some of the actors and actresses from that era. Though these are just a few ways to venture out and try something new in March, hopefully they offer a place to start and incentive to continue exploring all that Williamsburg has to offer.

St. Patrick’s Day offers a good excuse to check out live music By Brandy Centolanza Whether you prefer jazz, blues, rock, or country, there is a local band out there for you. St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity to get off the couch, and head to your favorite restaurant or pub, where you can enjoy a drink and listen to live music. Nearly every night of the week, you will find musicians performing at local venues. Seasons Restaurant & Bar in Merchants Square has live entertainment on the patio every night, and local bands from throughout the area perform at the restaurant on select Saturdays. Aromas Coffeehouse Bakeshop & Cafe on Prince George Street often hosts jazz nights on Tuesdays and open mic nights on Thursdays. Meanwhile, Cogan’s Deli & Sports Pub in New Town offers acoustic music on Wednesdays and has a variety of bands performing on Friday and Saturday nights. “We have a good mix of music,” says Douglas Rowe, an employee at Cogan’s Deli & Sports Pub. “It’s going well. We feel we’ve become a Cheers type place, a hometown bar with lots of locals coming in.” Frank and Brian Gleason, a duo known as Fiddler’s Green, is slated to perform Irish music at Cogan’s Deli & Pub on March 9 in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Daddyo’s Tavern in Norge also has live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Management there started bringing in local musicians three years ago to grow and promote the live music scene. Soul Patch, a Newport News-based band that plays a mixture of classic rock, new rock, and 18

country, will perform at Daddyo’s on St. Patrick’s Day. Local instrumentalists and vocalists play a range of music, from their own, original tunes to cover songs from popular national acts spanning various decades and genres. “Local live music entertains adults, encourages kids to enjoy and pursue playing music, allows singers and songwriters a means to present their musical creations, and provides ‘cover’ players and groups places to give a wide spectrum of interpretations to music that is already out there,” says Joe Duggan, a musician with the band Joe’s Day Off. “The eclectic mix of musical genres played live in greater Williamsburg includes something for almost every taste.” Joe’s Day Off frequently performs at Triangle, a tapas bar in downtown Williamsburg. Triangle hosts events nearly every night of the week, including a jazz brunch on occasional Sundays. Oceans & Ale in the Premium Outlets is also a hot spot for live music on the weekends. Next month, the taphouse at Berret’s Seafood Restaurant & Taphouse Grill on S. Boundary Street will reopen for the season. From April to October, the outdoor patio is open to patrons, and the taphouse often features solo or duo musical acts as entertainment during the dinner hours. You can also catch live musical performances the second Sunday of each month during the 2nd Sundays Art & Music Festival in downtown Williamsburg, or at various outdoor concert venues during the summer months.

Williamsburg Film Festival celebrates 20th annual event

By Heather Bridges

In 1987, a group of western movie fans started gathering to watch westerns on a big screen. Ten years later, that group started the Williamsburg Film Festival. Nearly 20 years after that, the festival is still going strong, driven by a love for Hollywood’s Golden Era. The 20th annual Williamsburg Film Festival returns March 9-12 to the Holiday Inn Patriot, presented by the Williamsburg Classic Film Guild. Starting Wednesday, March 9, guests can view 16mm films on a big screen in two viewing rooms. In between films, check out the Dealer’s Room, filled with posters, comics, books, records, autographs, toys and more. The movie and television stars arrive Thursday. Though subject to change, this year’s star lineup p includes Donna Martell,

Robert Fuller, Terry Moore, Burton Gilliam, Jacqueline Scott, Roberta Shore, Don Collier and more. In addition to participating in daily interview panels, the stars will mingle with fans and sign autographs in the Dealer’s Room at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Friday and 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday. The festival features live entertainers each night, culminating in the Saturday Night Dinner Show. The 2016 dinner show features a headlining performance from award-winning western singer-songwriter R.W. Hampton. The performance will also include Belinda Gail, designated by American Cowboy Magazine as one of the top 50 country and western entertainers of all time. For more information on the festival, visit http://www.williamsburgfilmfestival.org.

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc.

If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! Spring: When nearly everything old is new again stock photo

By Brandy Centolanza Spring cleaning: The perfect time to give your home a fresh, updated look. You can make a room look like new without spending a fortune by reusing what already exists in your home in a different way. What’s the best way to repurpose what you already own? “Paint, paint, paint,” shares Renee Graves, president of Classic Consignments in the Village Shops at Kingsmill. “Paint is great. It is an inexpensive way to give something a whole new look.” You can redo a piece of furniture with spray paint, chalk paint, or mud paint. “Take an old coffee table and paint it a bright red or green or yellow. Give it a new color and it will brighten up a room,” suggests Graves. Chalk paint can be used on nearly any surface. You can use chalk paint to change the look of dressers, book cases, old mirrors, even chandeliers. “You can use chalkboard paint to paint an old mirror, hang it up, and use it to write notes for the kids,” Graves says. Repainting a room can liven up the appearance of a home. “The easiest way to freshen up a room is to repaint it,” Graves says. “Try a different theme. Add some new artwork or knickknacks, new throw pillows, or inexpensive area rugs. It’s simple to do

without spending a lot of money and it will look different.” When it comes to furniture, take a look around your home and get creative with what you have but don’t necessarily use anymore. Old ladders can be used as bookshelves to store books, photo frames, and other home décor. Old doors can be transformed into tables or frames for standing mirrors. Outdated suitcases can be repurposed as medicine chests, tables or chairs. An old entertainment stand can become a bookcase while an old trunk or an old bar stool can find new life as an end stand or coffee table. Looking for storage ideas? Bulletin boards, old cupcake pans, or Altoid tins can be used to contain jewelry. You can use old bottles, soup cans, cups, or ice cube trays for storage of cosmetics, craft supplies, pencils or other school supplies, or use a plastic hanging shoe rack as a pantry organizer. Old shutters can be repurposed as shelves to store mail and other paperwork and important documents. What you normally think of as trash can also be reused within the home. Toilet paper rolls or paper clips can be used to sort and organize electrical cords, paper towel rolls can be used as holders for ribbon, and empty tissue boxes can become dispensers for plastic grocery bags. Before you pull out the garbage bags this spring, think about what you can recycle, reuse, or repurpose to freshen up the home. Grab a paintbrush and give it a go. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016

Colonial Folk Art Studio & Gallery By Heather Bridges

“It really only made sense to sell what I knew,” she said.

Step inside Colonial Folk Art, and immediately, you notice the colors. Colors that leap from an eclectic collection of art pieces. Colors that would normally overwhelm, but within Colonial Folk Art’s space, they just seem right. Just like the abundance of color, Colonial Folk Art’s space is home to a number of elements – a gallery, a studio, art classes. Together, they just seem right. Together, they form a hub of creativity that owners Davie and Beverly Burgdorf have been cultivating since Colonial Folk Art opened in Williamsburg’s Arts District in 2014. The gallery grew from the couple’s collection of art and antique books. When the collection outgrew their home, they turned it into Colonial Folk Art. Beverly has always loved folk art. While pursuing an art major in college, she wrote her thesis on the topic. 26

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016

The gallery features vintage and contemporary folk and outsider art. Generally defined, folk art is rooted in culture and tradition, and it is largely functional and utilitarian. While folk artists might have some form of training, outsider artists are always self-taught, creating art that can’t be defined by an artistic style. The gallery features folk and outsider art legends, such as R.A. Miller, Purvis Young and Rev. Howard Finster. But Colonial Folk Art mostly focuses on promoting local artists, such as Greg Hansen of Williamsburg and John Boelte of Toano, as well as some regional artists. “These folks are great treasures in the community,” Davie said. “Their work is really outstanding.” From paintings to ceramics to wood carvings and even tables, every piece is original, unique. “Each piece tells a story,” Beverly said. “We know

the stories of our work here.” Davie and Beverly can describe the artists and stories behind each of the artworks. The gallery also houses a collection of antique books, engravings and maps – these are Davie’s specialty. As the gallery’s artist-in-residence, and an art teacher by trade, Beverly teaches classes in mixed media and ceramics. The classes are mostly for middle-school ages and older, but Colonial Folk Art is flexible on ages, skill levels, class sizes and times. “We try to be very accommodating,” Davie said. “We will flex to meet what the art community needs.” The art community can also utilize Colonial Folk Art’s open studio, a feature that is unique to the gallery. Whether amateurs or professionals, any artists can rent time in the studio, which, in addition to working space, offers potters wheels, kilns, clay and glazes for sale. Beverly said a good group of artists currently utilizes the studio space. “They just love to talk art and creativity back here,” she said. “They like to share ideas.” “The nice thing is being able to have artists in here, have that shared perspective, that shared artistic collaboration,” Davie said.

living & retiring here

Coming Home: Seven superior reasons to move or retire to the Williamsburg area By Molly Hunter Korroch When someone from out of town thinks of Williamsburg, re-enactors costumed in gowns or breeches, horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone streets may come to mind. Williamsburg’s history is grand, rich with color and story. But the Revolutionary and Civil wars aren’t the only stories around town. Here, there is the drama of local athletics and fine arts, fine dining and outdoor adventures. A quick glance at The Last Word reveals a spunky community full of humor and goodwill. Williamsburg is a famous place with a small town atmosphere. It’s a good place to get to know your neighbors – and give them a chance to get to know you. 1. The Arts: Take a stroll through any one of Williamsburg’s art museums or galleries or snag a ticket to hear some live music. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, The Muscarelle Museum of Art, Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center, Dewitt-Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, The Williamsburg Symphonia and the Williamsburg Choral Guild are all top rate contributors to both the regional and national artistic communities. 2. Restaurants: From elegant eateries to neighborhood dives, Williamsburg has it all. Local classics include The Cheese Shop and newcomer La Terraza. Some other favorites are Seafare and Red, Hot, and Blue. There is something for every taste. 3. Country Clubs: The scenery in Williamsburg is breathtaking; it is particularly beautiful when viewed from one of its fine golf courses. There are several clubs in Williamsburg that offer golf, tennis, swimming and a variety of social activities. For example, Governor’s Land’s Two Rivers Country Club and Ford’s Colony Country Club are both beautiful facilities. There are also several organizations focusing exclusively on either golf or tennis. 4. Shopping: There are a multitude of options for apparel – and whatever else you may need. The 32

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016

shops at Merchant’s Square have everything from bespoke men’s suits to a little girl’s Easter dress. Be sure to check out a fantastic selection of shoes at The Shoe Attic. And for those who like a treasure hunt there are several great consignment stores like The Clothes Tree and Sugar and Spice. When you have a longer list, head to Williamsburg Premium Outlets on Richmond Road. 5. Family fun: When you take advantage of residential benefits and season passes, there is rarely a dull summer day around here. With Busch Gardens, Water Country, Go Carts Plus, and Go Ape, there is always something fun to do. There are parks, trails and national monuments in and around the area, while sites like Monticello and Mount Vernon are only a day trip away. Don’t forget the kids’ activities at our premier historic sites: Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. 6. Education: There is so much to learn in and around Williamsburg. It is a place uniquely suited for both education and the kindling of curiosity. Williamsburg-James City County boasts a strong public schools division — Jamestown High School is ranked in Virginia’s Top Twenty high schools according to U.S. News & World Report. There are also several private schools from which to choose. When you’re ready for the next step, there’s Thomas Nelson Community College and The College of William and Mary, which includes the Christopher Wren Association, which is an organization dedicated to continuing education and lifelong learning. 7. Travel: It’s easy to come to and go from the area. When you want to share your new home with your out-of-town friends, the Richmond and Norfolk International Airports are each about 45 miles away and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is 20 miles away. There are train and bus stations downtown, and Washington D.C. and Richmond are only three hours and an hour away respectively.

Williamsburg Home Show returns By Heather Bridges Returning for a second year, the Williamsburg Home Show continues to establish itself in the Williamsburg community as an annual destination for homeowners. From March 12-13, William and Mary Hall will house exhibitors offering products, tips and trends related to all things home-oriented – remodeling, landscaping, decorating and building. Those attending the Home Show, presented by Show Managers LLC, can browse displays, interact with professionals and view demonstrations. Local companies, especially, will be prevalent. New this year is the “SAMPLEVA” feature. In addition to the array of exhibitors on the main floor, attendees will find food vendors on the second floor, offering gourmet crafted foods from around Virginia. This year, the Home Show will again offer highlight garden experts at the “Green Thumb Theater.” Speakers and topics from last year included everything from creating floral arrangements from backyards, by Mary Hunter Curry of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, to pruning spring flowers, by horticul34

The collaborative community of Work Nimbly By Heather Bridges At Work Nimbly, natural light floods through the windows, across knotted wood floors. The décor is comfortable, quirky. A kitchen area abounds with coffee, tea, sodas, snacks. You’ll even find a quote jotted on the bathroom mirror. Located on the second floor of a nearly 100-yearold building, the space is warm and inviting. It feels like home. But it’s not a home. That’s the point.

38

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016

As the initiative of three business-owners who no longer wanted to work from home, Work Nimbly provides a co-working space for independent workers. Even more, it creates a collaborative community. The collaboration started among Williamsburg locals Natalie Miller Moore, Jenn Haynes and Gretchen Bedell. Owner of Moore than Words, a health communications business, Moore found that she wasn’t as productive working from home or coffee-shop environments. While running A-One Mobile Bookkeeping from home, Haynes struggled with work-life differentiation. Bedell needed a better

location to meet clients of her creative firm, Odd Moxie. The three started Work Nimbly in 2014, and they haven’t looked back since. “Each of us has increased our business from being in this space,” Haynes said. She described Work Nimbly as the “grey space” for people who need to get out of their homes, but don’t want a closed office. Work Nimbly offers work space, wi-fi, office supplies, you name it. Whether you need it for one day, or every day. It’s geared for independent workers – freelancers, small-business owners, students, entrepreneurs, remote employees and the like – but don’t be fooled by the word “independent.” Co-working is inherently social. “We all work in really different fields and have different skills as a result,” Moore said. The Work Nimbly community has included everyone from a personal stylist to an ornithologist. When co-working, you share skills. Even more, you share advice, support and accountability, Moore described. “It’s sort of like networking on steroids, because you actually get to know people,” Haynes said. In hopes of growing that business community, Work Nimbly also offers the Cobblers Collective, a weekly small business support group. After a year of meetings, “We still haven’t run out of things to talk about,” Moore said. New to 2016 is The Unread Book Club, in which members take turns reading business-related books and summarizing them for the rest of the group, who aren’t required to read the books. Last August, Work Nimbly hosted #HipsterHunt2015, a scavenger hunt challenging

participants to complete tasks at businesses around Williamsburg, including Alewerks, Discover Teas and Retro Daddio. The idea was not only to support small local businesses, but also to highlight everything Williamsburg has to offer. Energized by Moore, Bedell and Haynes, Work Nimbly hopes to continue in its mission of con-

necting Williamsburg’s creatives. “The more the merrier,” Bedell said. The first visit to Work Nimbly is free. After that, a day pass is $15, and a monthly membership is $150. Those looking to rent the conference room can do so for $25 per hour. For more information, visit worknimbly.com.

Traditional Easter ham finds new ways to delight

By Brandy Centolanza When it comes to Easter dinner, you can be sure that you will find ham at the table. Ham is a food staple during the holidays, and there are numerous ways you can prepare and serve it. Ham comes in a variety of types in two categories: dried, cured country hams, and sweet hams, much like the ham you pick up at the deli counter. Cured hams are popular as well as spiral-sliced honeyglazed hams.

Edwards Ham Shop on Richmond Road specializes in Virginia country hams. Their ham is dried from a few months up to a few years, depending on the type. The shop offers samples at the store to help consumers decide which they prefer. “A ham’s flavor depends on how long you age the ham,” says Sam Edwards, the shop’s owner. “The longer you age a ham, the more robust the flavor. It just depends on how you like it.” Jonathan Harris is co-owner of the Spanish specialty store La Tienda in Colony Square Shop-

ping Center on Jamestown Road. La Tienda sells European-style hams. Spain is known for its ham, with the exquisite Jamón Ibérico de Bellota ham being the most expensive in the world. It can cost more than $1,000 for a whole ham of this type. “If you are looking for a great ham, you get what you pay for,” notes Harris. “Quality ham requires good raw materials and 19 years and counting.

time to cure properly. It is better to spend a little more and savor the taste of a fine ham. You will find that a smaller portion is just as satisfying as a large portion of cheap ham. For cooked ham, beware of any product with lots of added water, sometimes up to ten percent. It is cheaper because you are buying water.” Choose a ham that is firm, plump, and rosy pink in color. Most hams you purchase at the market are already cooked, so to prepare the ham all you would need to do is turn on the oven. Sam Edwards suggests taking your time when baking a ham. “The lower the temperature and the slower you cook it, the better the ham will taste,” he says. You can also grill ham, fry it, or cook it in a slow cooker. Ham pairs well with potatoes, squash, carrots, green beans, and other vegetables. “In my house, we serve ham with seafood,” says Sam Edwards. He also likes to fry ham and serve it with fried apples. “The sweet and salty combination is the key,” he says. Adds Harris: “Cured Spanish ham pairs very well with aged cheeses such as Manchego, roasted almonds, and good quality olives.” If you buy extra ham, you can use leftovers in omelettes, sandwiches, soups and stews, or salads.

Grilled Shrimp Wrapped in Serrano Ham - Gambas a la Parilla Envueltas en Jamón Serrano This appetizer is very straightforward, but as with most grilling recipes, simpler is usually better. The key is to cook the shrimp quickly at high heat, which will crisp the ham without overcooking the shrimp. Makes 4 servings. Prep Time: 20 min. Cook Time: 5 min. Ingredients: 1 pound of large shrimp 8 oz Serrano ham 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika (Pimentón de La Vera) Salt and pepper Grilling skewers Preparation: Peel the shrimp, leaving the tails on. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and paprika. Coat in olive oil. Wrap each shrimp with a piece of jamón, about two inches long, and skewer the shrimp so the ham is held securely around the shrimp. Place the skewers over a high temperature grill and cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until the shrimp is opaque. Serve immediately.

An immersion into the history of beer By Heather Bridges

In 2014, the overall national beer market reached $101.5 billion, with the market for craft beer at $19.6 billion, according to a report by the Brewers Association. Even beyond the U.S., beer remains one of the most popular, and one of the oldest, beverages in the world. Trace the beverage back to its beginnings at Colonial Williamsburg’s first conference to exclusively explore the history of beer. “Ales through the Ages” is scheduled for March 18-20. Join beer experts from around the world – including writers Randy Mosher, Martyn Cornell and Stan Hieronymus, beer scientist Karen Fortmann of White Labs and brew master Mitch Steele of Stone Brewing Company – for a weekend of all things ales. Following registration at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, 326 W. Francis St., the conference kicks off with a beer tasting at Chowning’s Ale House in the Historic Area. But the rest of the weekend delves more into the science behind the taste, from examining ancient ales to studying the origins of industrial brewing to learning about ingredients used by brewers throughout history. Following a welcome by Peter Seibert, director of Colonial

The Hound’s Tale offers Williamsburg a taste of something different By Heather Bridges

You can’t easily categorize The Hound’s Tale. In a way, that’s what the restaurant hoped. A glance at the menu reveals everything from fried Brussels sprouts to pumpkin ravioli, and the bar serves hand-crafted cocktails you won’t find elsewhere. “We wanted to do something different,” said Don Pratt, who owns the restaurant with his wife Geri. Still, there’s something familiar about The Hound’s Tale. It feels comfortable, homey – some might recognize that feel from the Pratt’s other 54

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016

local establishment, Aromas café. From the minute you walk in the door, “you just want to be in here,” said Nicole Rackley, frontend manager and bar director. “It’s warm. It’s inviting.” The Hound’s Tale opened in December 2015. As the Pratts were searching for a space to house the kitchen operation of the Aromas in William and Mary’s Swem Library, they saw an opportunity to contribute to business and culture in Williamsburg’s downtown area. “We’re hoping that it will attract a cross section of the community,” Pratt said. “We want everybody to feel comfortable there.”

The menu offers both “bites,” small plates at a range of $6-$11, and “chow,” entrees that range from $14-$22. Head chef Steven Sowell said customers could try five small plates or stick to an entrée – the menu offers a bit of flexibility. Not to mention the range of options: shrimp and avocado tempura, pierogis, skirt steak, grilled duck breast. “It’s something for everybody,” Sowell said. When he was 19, Sowell’s first cooking job was at Aromas. Later, Sowell and his wife Monique, who oversees catering for The Hound’s Tale and Aromas, both attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York. During their time in the city, they met chefs from around the country and the world. “We take a little bit from all over,” Monique said. As a mixologist, Rackley said she has enjoyed crafting original cocktails for the restaurant. Check out the “Silver Lining Shimmer,” a mix of gin, vodka, raspberry and white cranberry juice, or “Hannah’s Smoking Banana,” mixing smoked scotch, banana-infused Jameson and blackberry brandy. The bar also offers a selection of regional beers, as well as wines, on tap. Rackley’s husband Nick works behind the bar. The couple rounds out a staff that feels more like a family. And they make sure customers feel like part of that family. Sowell said his hope was that everyone who eats, and works, at The Hound’s Tale wants to come back. “To me, it’s all about family and employees and the customers,” he said. continued on page 57

Mostly, “We want to have fun,” Rackley said. It’s an atmosphere that puts anyone at ease – whether grabbing drinks with friends after work, going on a date or spending time with family. “This is something that Williamsburg really needed,” Rackley said. “It’s someplace different.” In providing another food option for Williamsburg restaurant-goers, Pratt described The Hound’s Tale as a piece to the puzzle that is Williamsburg’s culinary culture. “What I would hope that we would be doing is helping to create a culinary arts district in the downtown area,” he said.
