Experience, zeal, Susan Spellman When asked if she likes her job, Susan Spellman quickly replies, “I love it.” In fact, you can’t talk to her for more than a few minutes and not realize the passion she has for matching homes with clients. And that’s what makes her job fun and exciting every day. “I sometimes wake up at 3 a.m. and have figured out what I need to do to sell a house,” Spellman said in a recent interview. “Part of this business is having a Rolodex in your head.” Her sense of humor coupled with her keen business sense allows her to give each client personalized service which goes beyond expectations. She has sold hundreds of homes over the course of her career, which has given her the insight into asking the right questions and knowing what to do with the answers. That could be anything from helping a client secure the proper financing to helping those moving here find the neighborhood that is best suited to their needs. When the economic downturn negatively affected the home market, several Realtors were unable to fare the tough times. Spellman dug in her heels and kept her plan in place. Now, after several years of economic uncertainty, the housing market is showing signs of recuperating. “It is totally on the upswing,” she said. “If I were to prophesize, I would say that shortly it is going to be an owner’s market,” she said. “I really do believe it is getting better.” Spellman uses a computer and stays in 6

contact with her clients via email. She is the first to admit the Internet and social media have changed the way people buy and sell homes. “Ninety percent of the people have started their search for a home on the Internet,” she said. “That has changed how we do our business so much.” Although she utilizes e-mail and text messaging, nothing takes the place of a phone call or meeting to talk face-to-face about how she can best serve the client. And she keeps a diverse inventory of homes so as to provide people with as many options as possible. A 60-hour work week isn’t uncommon. That’s because of how she feels about what she does. “I am always amazed by people who get up in the morning and don’t like what they do,” she said. “I really do love what I do.” –Ann Efimetz

Hop to the Vintage Rabbit for unique items The Vintage Rabbit located in McLaws Circle is ever-changing. The consignment store, which has been open nearly two years, features a variety of furniture and home decor from more than 600 consignors. “We get new consignors almost every day which is wonderful,” owner Tara Marable said recently. “We work closely with the consignor for pricing and we agree on a fair price.” Every 30 days prices are marked down 10%. For regulars who frequent the store, getting a bargain provides a fun challenge. “If someone comes in and sees a sofa they want, they may say they are going to wait, and then come back,” she said. “Sometimes it is still there, and sometimes it is gone. We could have an area set up as a dining room one day and the next day it could possibly be set up as a family room.” Opening the store was an ideal fit for Marable, who has combined her background in sales with her affinity for home decorating. The store is set up to resemble a home with items displayed in a way that

is conducive to what they may look like in an actual residence. Business has been brisk. “We have grown so fast,” she said. “We are getting beautiful and unique pieces in daily. Consignment shopping is the new way of gift giving and sprucing up your home.” So how did she come up with the store’s name? “I knew I wanted the word ‘vintage’ in it,” she explained. “I wanted to offer a variety of styles, some antiques, some vintage things. I called my sister and told her I wanted to come up with a catchy name. She collects rabbits, and it just clicked. People always ask how we came up with the name and I say ‘My sister, she is the rabbit collector.’” Marable has used the popularity of social media to help get the word out about items that arrive to the store. She posts new inventory photos at least three times a week on the store’s Facebook page. “We post pictures almost every day or so,” she said. “We are huge on Facebook. People ask us questions about the items, and it reaches a lot of people.” The store also offers a four-week layaway and a “24-hour” take home on approval before you buy.” There is a friendly staff that offers outstanding customer service. Marable said Vintage Rabbit now features “Saturday Special Guests.” On the third Saturday of each month, an artist creates works of art in various m media. So far they have been popular with shoppers. She hopes that those who w haven’t visited will w make it a point to stop by. Marable said the t store is frequented by b out-of-town visitors tor who are looking for something unique to take some home from fro o their vacation. “We actually have a lot of tourists who come back again, when they come back every few months,” she said. “When they visit they come back again.” –Ann Efimetz

Biking around town May is Bike Month. Locally there are dozens of events planned to help encourage people to hop on their bikes and pedal around town and the area. The Williamsburg Area Bicyclists have a the mission to “promote and encourage the use of the bicycle as a means of recreation, fitness, and transportation.” During May there are several events scheduled including Bike to Work Day, May 17, and Cap2Cap Rides, May 11. Unfortunately due to sequestration budget cuts, the annual Pedal The Parkway on the Colonial Parkway has been canceled for 2013. Area bike shops sponsor activities and encourage people to rediscover biking anew. BikeBeat, located in the Monticello Marketplace (near Target) has been in business since 1998. Besides the local store, there are BikeBeats in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Kiln Creek in Newport News. The store carries a variety of bikes, parts, accessories and biking equipment. They offer fitting services, special classes on bike repair and offer a full repair service at the store. Owner David Wilson said they have a large customer base of biking enthusiasts who either ride for fitness or fun, or both. “The biggest change is me now see more adults buying bikes,” he said. “Today there are a lot more adults biking for physical fitness and some for cross training.” As a biking enthusiast himself,

Wilson works with organizations including the Historic Triangle Bicycle Advisory Committee to devise more bike-friendly pathways, road access and biking facilities. One example is the Virginia Capitol Trail which has offered a wonderful place for bikers to ride for miles on a beautiful path. Completion of the path is underway that will connect to the existing nine miles in Charles City County. Williamsburg boasts mountain bike parks including Freedom Park,York River State Park, New Quarter and Upper County. All the parks have networks of mountain bike trails and fun and challenging for all levels of riders. The warmer weather brings a surge in business as people take to their bikes. “People are drawn in by biking, the feeling of the sense of freedom,” he said. “Biking also allows people to look around and really enjoyed their environment. In the past it has been a challenge because of the lack of facilities now with some if these newly created facilities, there are places bikers can ride safely.” –Ann Efimetz

smile enhancement have a wide variety of services from which to choose depending on their individual circumstances, needs and budgets,” Springmann said recently. “When we speak of cosmetics we think of whitening, orthodontics, gum shaping, reshaping chipped or uneven teeth, bonding, veneers and ceramic crowns.” Teeth whitening – Teeth can be whitened at a dentists office or by using product (strips or trays) purchased at department stores or pharmacies. Whitening teeth is considered one of the most cost effective ways to improve the overall look of the smile. Take-home tray whitening is one of the most common cosmetic procedure done at New Town Dental Arts. Porcelain veneers – Thin tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They can be used to help people with stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes, teeth that are worn down, chipped or broken, misaligned or uneven. Dental implants – Are usually made of titanium and support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth. Dental bonding – Used to cover a tooth that may be discolored, cracked, or chipped by using a tooth-colored resin material that continued on next page

Tooth contouring and reshaping - A procedure to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or even overlapping teeth. Dentures – or false teeth, are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth. They can be very helpful in improving dental and which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Ceramic crowns – Used to crown teeth without leaving a dark metal line at the gumline. “A procedure that makes a big instant difference is gingival recontouring using a laser,” Springmann explained. “I use a laser and there is no cutting, no bleeding,no stitches and it is a procedure that really makes a gummy smile or short teeth look so much better.” Orthodontics – Including Invisalign, SixMonthSmiles, Smart Moves can make a huge difference in lifting the smile. “I have several patients in their 60s and 70s that are doing or have done Invisalign,” Springmann said. “It’s never too late to feel good about your smile.” More? Remember Mom

Some fun facts about Mother’s Day According the the U.S. Census Bureau, the driving force behind Mother’s Day was Anna Jarvis, who organized observances in Grafton, W.Va., and Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. As the annual celebration became popular around the country, Jarvis asked members of Congress to set aside a day to honor mothers. She finally succeeded in 1914, when Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Those who want to remember Mom in will find many places throughout greater Williamsburg

to buy that special something. How about a nice piece of jewelry, clothing, accessories or a certificate to a spa, salon or restaurant? Mom will appreciate it. This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 12. Here are some fun facts from the Census Bureau about Moms. 85.4 million - The estimated number of mothers in the U.S. in 2009. 25.1 - Average age of women in 2008 when they gave birth for the first time, up from 25.0 years in 2006 and 2007. 53% - Percentage of 15- to 50-year-old women who were

mothers in 2010. 81% - Percentage of women who had become mothers by age 40-44 as of 2010. In 1976, 90% of women in that age group had given birth. Jacob and Isabella - The most popular baby names for boys and girls, respectively, in 2010. 5 million - Number of stay-athome moms in 2011, same as in 2010 and down from 5.1 million in 2009 and 5.3 million in 2008 10 million - The number of single mothers living with children younger than 18 in 2011, up from 3.4 million in 1970.

The Virginia Arts Festival will again present Festival Williamsburg Memorial Day weekend. Festivities begin at 8 p.m. May 24 in the Virginia Room of the Williamsburg Lodge with Arturo Sandoval. He is the winner of eight Grammy Awards and an Emmy and the legendary performer and composer will present various styles of music from jazz to classical. “Bravo Broadway” is scheduled for 5:30 and 8 p.m. May 25 in the Williamsburg Lodge. The event is one of the festival’s most popular events and will feature stars of Broadway and cabaret.

It will feature Debbie Gravitte, Broadway performer who has charmed audiences in “Les Miserables” and in the movies with “The Little Mermaid.” She will be joined by Tonynominated singer/actress Christiane Noll of “Ragtime” and “Jekyll and Hyde” and Doug LaBrecque, of “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Showboat.” The spicy sounds of “Hot Sardines” will fill the Virginia Room of the Williamsburg Lodge at 7 p.m. May 26. Their music is described as “le jazz hot of Paris meets N’Awlins! Hot jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of music Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller used to make.” Tickets are on sale through vafest.org or through www. ticketmaster.com. Pretty time of year Now that the warmer temperatures are here, it is time to get outdoors and enjoy all that’s blooming around town. There are several places to walk, bike or run that boast color year-round. Dogwood trees have passed their peak, but soon it will be time for crape myrtles to bloom. The distinctive blossoms are hardy and come in a variety of colors including white, pink and purple. According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the crape myrtle is one of Virginia’s most popular yet mistreated landscape plants. People often prune it too hard and can cause damage to the plant. Crape myrtles are often called “the plant of the 100 day bloom” for its longevity. They are lowmaintenance and easy to grow if provided with sunny locations and soil with moderate moisture and fertility In the fall they have have bright leaves. Area stores and landscaping centers carry crape myrtles. –Ann Efimetz

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE!

May See & Do • Revolutionary City Returns — Colonial Williamsburg’s flagship daily street theater presentation returns for its eighth season, re-enacting real events of the American Revolution in the locations they occurred and telling the stories of colonial unrest as loyal subjects turn against their king and have to choose between monarchy and self-government. But the challenges don’t end there, as both free and enslaved cope with the effects of war profiteering, rampant inflation and other hardships while they ponder their loyalties and what the future holds. • The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg – a groundbreaking new exhibition of extraordinary paintings associated with the Early American South opened in March in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. “Painters and Paintings in the Early American South” is the first exhibition of its kind that explores the scope of this region of early American art while bringing new vitality, excitement and scholarship to the forefront. Colonial Williamsburg has assembled these exquisite objects through years of painstaking research and collaboration to produce a stunning exhibition of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and other artworks pertinent to the Atlantic coast states from Maryland southward and the upper coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibit runs through Sept. 7, 2014. • Jefferson in Williamsburg with Jon Meacham – Colonial Williamsburg’s Speaker Series provides a fascinating look into the life of Thomas Jefferson and his pursuit of power with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham. Discuss the author’s latest biography, the #1 New York Times bestseller "Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power," during our

lunch and conversation series, followed by a book signing and Q&A session. May 9 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Williamsburg Lodge Conference Center. Tickets $65 can be purchased at http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/do/special-events/speakers-series/) • Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public - Reflects the complexity of mounting a war effort against the world’s most powerful 18th-century nation. The newest addition is the Tinsmith Shop. This period industrial complex features the main armoury building with its blacksmith forges and a kitchen where Anderson fed his diverse 40-person work force and other structures. • Festival Williamsburg - The Virginia Arts Festival returns to Williamsburg for its 2013 season. Performances by Arturo Sandoval; Bravo Broadway, featuring Debbie Gravitte, Christiane Noll, and Doug LaBrecque; and the hot jazz sound of Hot Sardines. Tickets on sale now through the Virginia Arts Festival box office, 757-282-2822, or through Ticketmaster. • Threads of Feeling – When mothers left babies at London’s Foundling Hospital in the mid-18th century, the Hospital often retained a small token as a means of identification, usually a piece of fabric. Each scrap of material reflects the life of a single infant and that of its absent parent. Organized by the Foundling Museum and curated by John Styles, this will be the only American venue for this exhibition opening May 25. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

Meet at Cogan’s Bill Cogan is a self-described foodie. His passion has always been serving serving great meals to people. That’s why his New Town sandwich shop, Cogan’s is such a great fit, allowing him the chance to pursue what he loves. Cogan is originally from New York where he worked as a line cook. He studied at William & Mary, bringing him here. After working in the food service industry for years and looking to start his own business, he bought a struggling deli. With his experience and and guidance, the place took off almost overnight. Cogan’s has fast become the place to be on weekends. Not only is there great food, but he has made it a point to feature live music from local bands. On any given weekend, patrons will be can hear a variety of music ranging from folk to rock. There’s also a well-stocked bar and HD TVs for those who want to watch the latest sports game. The vibe at Cogan’s is hip, yet friendly and welcoming. Weather permitting, games such as cornhole are held on the patio. Its convienient location and laid-back atmosphere

make the restaurant a solid choice for a fun weekend night. Cogan’s primary focus is “wowing” his customers with great food. This is most evident in the familyfriendly dedicated dining area. The restaurant serves gourmet-quality sandwiches, soups and salads at great prices. All of Cogan’s offerings are prepared fresh and arrive fast. According to Cogan, the most popular sandwich is “The Full Monte,” a massive sandwich replete with roast beef, turkey, ham, salami, red onions, provalone, and a dusting of red peppers. Cogan’s is an ideal spot to meet co-workers for lunch, have a family dinner or hear great music with friends. Hub of activity On any given day Market Square in Colonial Williamsburg bustles with activity. The square, located near the Colonial Courthouse, midway between College of William & Mary and the Capitol is the site of fairs, markets, arms training, celebrations and auctions. People flock to Market Square to purchase unique colonial gifts and to see games and other activities performed by historical interpreters. In colonial times the square would be the site of fairs, puppet shows, horse races, cockfights, dancing, fiddling and other entertainment. Accordion to Colonial Williamsburg’s website, Market Square also was the focus of serious matters. James City County’s Courthouse stood at its southern edge, at Francis and England Streets, by 1715. That was the year Governor Alexander Spotswood constructed the powder magazine on the square’s south side to store muskets and ammunition. continued on page 51 49

The square was dominated by the courthouse, built almost in the middle. Lawyer Benjamin Waller proclaimed Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence from the Courthouse steps on July 25, 1776. City and county courts met in the building until 1932. In 1933, with the advent of more traffic, the Rev. Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin, rector of Bruton Parish Church and John D. Rockefeller suggested that a tunnel be built under the square. The Colonial Parkway built under Market Square in 1940. Each year at Christmas, thousands converge on the square to participate in the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
