Kingsmill Championship has title sponsor By John Harvey For the ﬁrst time in three years, the Kingsmill Championship has a title sponsor. JTBC, South Korea’s leading broadcast company signed a deal in March to become the presenting sponsor of the event. The Kingsmill Championship had been without a title sponsor since rejoining the LPGA Tour in 2012. “We are thrilled to have JTBC on board as a partner this year,” said Wayne Nooe, executive director of the Kingsmill Championship in a press release. “This new partnership will certainly elevate the presence of the championship, as well as maintain the growing momentum of the tournament’s awareness.”

More than 100 of the LPGA’s top golfers are expected to come to the River Course May 15-18 in an event that has been long revered by the players and fans. The $1.3 million purse is expected to attract many of the LPGA’s most talented players, including Inbee Park, Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis, Natalie Gulbis and Karrie Webb. Last May, Cristie Kerr defeated Suzann Pettersen in a two-hole, sudden death playoff in a showdown of former champions. The win marked Kerr’s third victory at Kingsmill. LPGA commissioner Michael Whan announced a fouryear contract extension that will keep the event in greater Williamsburg through 2017. “Everything about Kingsmill is top notch,” Whan said in a statement. “From the incredible resort, to the championship River Course venue, to the way they treat both the players and the fans. I’m so excited about our long-term partnership, as it ensures that we’ll continue this wonderful tradition of showcasing the best golfers in the world at one of the best golf resorts in the world.” Greater Williamsburg has been a welcome host to the tournament since its arrival in 2003. According to published reports, nearly 64,000 fans attended last year’s tournament, including 17,000 for the ﬁnal round to watch Kerr and Pettersen battle for the title. Economically, it’s estimated the impact of this event is worth $6 million to the Hampton Roads area through

hotel rooms, meals, gasoline and tickets sales. Another $250,000 a year is raised for local charities. This year’s event begins Monday, May 12 with a qualiﬁer, where two players will earn sponsor exemptions. Players will take part in practice rounds on Tuesday and some will be involved in Wednesday’s Pro-Am event. The tournament will also feature nearly eight hours of national television coverage on The Golf Channel, which is broadcast to millions of homes around the world. It will also be broadcast internationally on JTBC, which is distributed to more than 21 million households throughout Korea. Want to go? The Kingsmill Championship will be held May 15-18 at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort. Tickets start at $25 for single-day grounds badges and $35 for clubhouse tickets. Weekly badges are available for all ﬁve days of play and VIP packages are also available. Children

A flavor for all Seasons By Ann M. EÀmetz

The warm personality of executive chef Robert Iaccarino translates into the culinary fare he creates for Seasons Restaurant and Bar in Merchants Square. His background in New Orleans cooking is apparent, as people have been discovering the different items he has created on the menu, all with his special flair. “I have easily identifiable food with Gulf Coast influences,” Iaccarino said recently. “Food should be able to stand up on its own and not be complicated by too many sauces and garnishments. I don’t like to disguise the food. It is like in a painting, if colors complement a theme, you can do it with a minimalist approach.” Iaccarino has been at Seasons for several months, after working two years at Rivers Inn in Gloucester where he served as executive chef. Prior to that, he spent more than 15 years in New Orleans where he blended his expertise in French, Italian and Spanish cooking to come up with his own distinct flavor. He worked closely with Paul Prudhomme at K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen in New Orleans and developed an affinity for Cajun cooking. “Things I learned in New Orleans show up in my style of cuisine,” Iaccarino said. “We want to keep the best-selling dishes at Seasons like prime rib and fabulous salads and diversify the menu with Gulf Coast-style creole dishes to complement the traditional meat and potatoes choices.” Iaccarino and his staff, many of whom have worked with him for years come up with choices that have wide appeal. He is quick to note his Cajun-type menu choices are “bronzed” in a cast iron skillet, not “blackened.”

“Bronzing is toasting the seasoning onto the protein,” he explained. “I don’t like to say blackening because that implies burning it onto the protein.” There are other New Orleans-type selections that are introduced in specials and on the menu including fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, red beans and rice and jambalaya. During Mardi Gras, he offered a variety of New Orleans-style dishes and beverages that were very popular with restaurant patrons. Iaccarino said one of his goals at the restaurant was to establish Seasons as a destination for locals and visitors to enjoy equally. “I want to take it from being a touristdriven restaurant to a local’s destination,” he said. “I want to keep it cost-effective for the client and produce a different twist on easily identifiable food.” Iaccarino said he isn’t swayed by trends in the industry or by fare offered by any other restaurant. He stays focused on his craft and being at his best at all times. “I feel comfortable with what I am doing,” he said. “I do enjoy going to restaurants, but I am not looking for any influence from anyone in the current culinary spotlight.” He hopes that locals and visitors who have visited the restaurant before will return to experience something different. “They can expect something new and different, something lively and flavorful,” he said. “They will experience a very authentic version of something from a different region.”

How did you get the idea to do this? Both Tyler and I are dual enrolled in Thomas Nelson and Walsingham Academy, and we are both taking two English classes at once. About three months ago we were in between business ventures and needed our next opportunity. Our teachers spent their entire class blocks on MLA format. Both teachers announced multiple times that, “Someone needs to invent a tool that does this for you!” Why is it an important service to supply? Millions of students in high school and college around the country use MLA format to style their papers in class. Easybib.com is a popular citation tool that automates one part of the MLA formatting process. It can be used conjointly with Formatically, and has processed over 700 million individual citations over the last several years. Each month, over 100,000 students search phrases like “MLA Format” and “MLA Format Template” with no results. That is why we knew we needed to build Formatically.com. How did you go about implementing the website? This is not the ﬁrst website we have built. We have several other websites from past projects and this website was the results of our knowledge of earlier attempts, as well as some hired professional help. Who helped you launch the site? We decided early on to hired an experienced programmer and get everything right from the get-go. After

only a week of searching were able to ﬁnd Greg Sherman. He was willing to work with us because he remembered MLA all too well and loved the idea of making it easier for students still in school. What was the process? Tyler and I were tasked with design, hosting, advertising and content while Greg was in charge implementation. It took almost two full months to get where we are now.

What do you hope to accomplish through the website? We really like the idea of never having to do MLA the old fashion way again. What has been the feedback so far? We have reached out to multiple websites and several colleges, and we’ve received support and encouragement from all. The site is still young and full of bugs, so we have been asking for users to leave feedback on any mistakes and bugs they notice while on the site. We have received support from users and constantly hear “It does what? Why didn’t I think of that!” How busy is the site? We just recently passed the 1,000 visitors mark and are ready to really start sharing the site.

Roxanne and Larry Armstrong of the recently opened Art for Your Face, located on Olde Towne Road near Premium Outlets, have an eye for helping customers look and see their best. “Eyewear is the fastest growing fashion accessory in the world,” Roxanne Armstrong said in a recent interview. “And it is growing more rapidly for men. Women have understood it from the 1980s. That is when eyewear went from a medical necessity to making a statement.”

For Larry Armstrong, it is a homecoming. “I grew up in Newport News,” he said. “This area is home for me. It is a very good location, and we are very fortunate.” Armstrong noted that, thanks to the Internet and phone sales, many of their loyal customers from the Tysons Corner location have followed. Lenses are created from a doctor’s prescription or from existing lenses in glasses. Each customer has personalized attention to find the frame they want with precise measurements taken for lenses to ensure the best vision. “We are physically making them according to their doctors’ prescription and with the measurements we take, that is why they come out so wonderfully,” Roxanne Armstrong said. “Our goal is for people to be madly in love with their eyewear. Chinese Church opens in Williamsburg By Ann M. EÀmetz A new Chinese Christian Church, River of Life Christian Church has begun weekly worship services at 2 p.m. Sundays at Williamsburg Community Chapel. Locals who have helped to organize the new church are Donghua Deng and Qun Li, who is a computer science professor at the College of William and Mary, Eddie and Grace Liu, founders of the International Student Fellowship at the College of William and Mary and Henry and Joanne Wan who are the owners of New Concept Sports & Gifts at the Settler’s Market. Church members have been meeting for Bible study since last fall. There are approximately 45 members, including children. 30

“This is for the community,” Eddie Liu said recently. “There is a need in the community.” The church is under the leadership of its mother church of the same name in Santa Clara Calif, which according to Liu is the largest Chinese Christian Church in North America. Pastor Steve Wang will travel from the West Coast next week to preach at the opening service. Other ministers from the California church will ﬂy in once a month to preach. On other Sundays, the two congregations will worship together via the Internet. “There are a lot of people who are very excited about the church,” Liu said. The direct connections between the slave trade and people, places and events in Williamsburg are explored in this program, which is part of Colonial Williamsburg’s Equiano Forum on early African American history and culture. Thousands of African captives, including members of noble families, were forcefully migrated to colonial Virginia. Guests will discover the stories of African princes and the role that language, literacy, and religion played in their efforts to escape slavery. Presented from 11:30 – 12:30 in the Hennage Auditorium in the Art Museums May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 and June 5. • Williamsburg Before and After Tour – For 81 years, Williamsburg served as the seat of Virginia government. But what happened after the capital moved to Richmond? For more than two centuries Williamsburg was simply a small tidewater town. Through images, stories, and personal memories, this tour explores the booms, busts and eventual restoration of this unique community. Tour begins at the Secretary’s Ofﬁce. 6 – 7 p.m. May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 and June 5. Adults 15. Age 6 -12 $7.50. Tickets must be purchased in advance. • Drop Spindle Spinning Class – This fun wool spinning class is perfect for beginners who want to learn the history of the drop spindle and the skills need-

FESTIVAL WILLIAMSBURG returns

By Ann M. EÀmetz Memorial Day Weekend is synonymous with Festival Williamsburg, which is presented by the Virginia Arts Festival in conjunction with the City of Williamsburg and Colonial Williamsburg. There are many returning favorites, coupled with the chance to see the Richard Alston Dance Company. The troupe is joining the festivities for the ﬁrst time.

Britain’s Richard Alston is internationally known and considered among the most inﬂuential choreographers. He has gained a reputation for the musicality of his dance. The performance is scheduled for 8 p.m., Friday, May 23 at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. Festival favorite Bela Fleck will return, joined by wife Abigail Washburn. Their performance will be held at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 24 in the Virginia Room of the Williamsburg Lodge. The big band sound will ﬁll the

Williamsburg Lodge once again, with their distinctive, fun sound that includes hits “You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three” and “Go Daddy O.” The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m., Sunday, May 25. Classical music aﬁcionados can enjoy the sounds of Andre Michel Schub and the Miami String Quartet. Schub will perform on piano in Coffee Concert IV with Peter Wiley on cello and Benny Kim on violin. Shopping locally helps the community By Ann M. EÀmetz On Saturday, May 3 more than 130 area business owners will participate in the Shop Local initiative sponsored by Chesapeake Bank. The ongoing program is designed to entice shoppers to buy local and support local businesses that help bolster the local economy. “There are more local communities across the country supporting buy local initiatives,” said Meredith Fernandez of Chesapeake Bank. “They know the small businesses are the backbone of their economies. To really have a healthy economy, you have to have a good mix of locally owned businesses.” The date here was chosen to complement occasions in early May. “We felt that was a great day, the weekend before Mother’s Day,” Fernandez said. “It is before William and Mary graduates. It is prom and wedding season and before you know it, high school graduation. We are trying to get people to think local and think of local merchants for these purchases.” In addition to the array of gift items she said people will be looking for, that time of year is optimal for home and garden projects. “It is the perfect time of year to buy landscaping items, spring cleaning items, or a new spring wardrobe,” she said. “It is all available here in Williamsburg.” An additional perk of buying local is that people who vacation to cities and towns and shop locally may ﬁnd businesses that carry items they aren’t able to get anywhere else. “Some of the smaller businesses are becoming tourist attractions in themselves,” she said. “It is nice to 44

go on vacation and see something new and different. If you offer unique stores and are waited on by the owner of the business, that is what makes people want to come back, because they may not be able to ﬁnd things like that in their home town.” Many of the business owners are extending their specials and shopping incentives. That’s because our area is so expansive, it may take shoppers more than a day to visit all the stores they would like to. Some stores will offer entertainment and refreshments. “If you only offer it one for one day, there are only so many stores a dedicated shop local person can go to,” she said. Fernandez added that merchants are seeing results. “Most merchants have reported there are new customers that walk in the door,” she said. “It has grown. The merchants want to keep participating.” Fernandez said that people may think that buying locally will mean they will pay more for an item, in comparison to shopping online. However, she noted, it’s important for people to realize that Internet shopping usually has a shipping charge and there it can be more complicated to return an item. The focus is to encourage people to consider supporting smaller business owners which can have a positive impact on the area’s economic health. “We don’t want to tell people where to shop, but instead get them in the mindset to support the local community by supporting local merchants,” she said. Royal School to visit Williamsburg The Williamsburg School of Needlework will be hosting the Royal School of Needlework from Hampton Court Palace in London. Two of the Royal School’s premier teachers will be holding several courses at the Williamsburg School of Needlework this month. Courses will include RSN traditional English embroidery in crewel, silk shading, blackwork, and goldwork. Students will have the opportunity to study with Nicola Jarvis and Tracy Franklin during the two-week offerings. Jarvis has had many years of teaching and working on design commissions through the Royal School. She has a professional career as a hand embroider, which includes working with the RSN team on Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. As a freelance designer, she has worked with numerous British fashion companies and recently held a solo show at the William Morris Gallery and Victoria & Albert V&A Museum. Franklin is a professional freelance embroiderer and designer who teaches privately and teaches RSN certiﬁcate and diploma courses. Her commissions have

included Ecclesiastical works at the Durham Cathedral and many private works. She has her own working studio which is open to the public in Durham, England. The Williamsburg School of Needlework was established in December 2012 in New Town. The school teaches vocational training programs for women and men interested in a career in hand embroidery. The school provides training for two of its design companies and offers hand embroidery services to clients throughout the USA and Internationally. Milestones

to celebrate

By Ann M. EÀmetz The Williamsburg Symphonia recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala. Among the honorees was Janna Hymes, who has been conducting the orchestra for 10 years. The milestone is impressive for the Symphonia, who under Hymes, has steadily been gaining a professional reputation and pulling in new and enthusiastic audiences and supporters. Hymes took some time this week to reﬂect on her tenure with the Symphonia. The affable Hymes, who in addition to her duties here, is music director of Maine Pro Musica Orchestra in her home state. She is proud of the Symphonia’s accomplishments under her tenure, but is far from content. “There is more work to do, but there is a cohesive ensemble that is at very high level, and that is very exciting,” Hymes said in a telephone interview. “We can play any repertoire.” Hymes was hired as music

director ten years ago after she learned the Symphonia was looking for a conductor. Circumstances lined up, and within a short time she was hired. Immediately she began setting goals for herself and the 45-member ensemble. “When I came in I wanted to bring the orchestra to another level,” she said. “I dug in and worked with the orchestra to develop a sound and improve on a lot of musical aspects. That takes a long time, but with in three or four years we were playing repertoire we couldn’t have played before.” Unlike some orchestras who are together week after week, the Symphonia musicians and Hymes have a limited rehearsal schedule. There are ﬁve concerts a year and the group meets once a month to practice. That makes their time together precious and important. “There are some orchestras who are with each other so much it becomes routine,” she said. “But with us it is always exciting, we are always doing different repertoire. The musicians come prepared and are ready to go.” Hymes said several of the musicians in the orchestra have landed jobs at major symphonies across the country. Some of the regular musicians perform with the Symphonia along with other major orchestras including the Richmond and Virginia Symphonies. Hymes admitted that one of the challenges is expanding the repertoire to appeal to a wider audience. “I feel the community doesn’t know about us,” she said. “But we play Pops music, holiday music, opera—we play everything. We are Williamsburg’s own orchestra,” she said. “They need to know

that we are not a volunteer orchestra, we are a professional orchestra, and our players make their living playing in orchestras.” The Symphonia has a strong supporter base including the Williamsburg Symphonia League that works to raise money and awareness. The Symphonia’s Masterworks Series generally sells out as does most of the other musical offerings presented. Despite those accomplishments, Hymes is constantly looking forward, hoping to further widen the orchestra’s appeal. That may be through offering more Popsstyle concerts or presenting various educational programs for children to cultivate their appreciation for classical music. “There is still a lot more I want to do. If I didn’t feel that way, I would be looking for another orchestra,” she said, adding that the orchestra is already programmed through 2015. But the passion Hymes has for the Williamsburg Symphonia comes down to one simple thing. “The transformative power of music,” she said. “How you change peoples lives with music is so unbelievable. Have pets, will travel The hot summer months are rapidly approaching. Those who take vacations may travel with families, including their pets. That’s ok, but there are some things to keep in mind before taking a trip with dogs and cats. Dr. Dale Sprenkel, owner of Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital in Norge, shares some tips to remember before getting on the road. One of the ﬁrst things to establish is where you will stay. Websites including www.travelpets.com and www.vetstreet.com can help by listing pet-friendly hotels. It’s a good idea to make sure pets are welcome before you leave on the trip. Sprenkel offers more tips: • Before you go make sure you have a copy of your pet’s medical records. • While traveling with your pets, keep them clean, keep them under control (on a leash), and pick up after. Pets should have a collar and an identiﬁcation tag. Quilting Fabrics | Notions • Classes

• Provide a safe and sturdy carrier for your pet and don’t forget the food and water bowls. • Those who are traveling by air will need to know what papers you will need when your pet has to be presented. The Air Transport Association, offers information on air travel for your dog or cat at http:// www.airlines.org • Never leave your pet in a hot car while you are shopping or sightseeing. A good rule to go by is that if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pet. • If you leave your pet unattended in hotel rooms, be sure to inform housekeeping and use the “Do Not Disturb” sign. • Should a pet become lost, contact the local animal control ofﬁcer immediately. If a pet does not already have a microchip, this is the ideal time to get one. A veterinarian can perform this in a few short minutes as an outpatient procedure.

hoping as the program expands to be working with pharm D students and medical students at VCU. How many patients do you see weekly? On average I see about 35-45 patients per week. What types of conditions do you treat? Hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, chronic renal disease, congestive heart failure and cardiac disease and arthritic issues. However, with an elderly population, I am also seeing a lot of syndromes that are speciﬁc to the elderly. These include disease processes such as dementia of many different types, Parkinson’s and other movement disorders, falls, urinary incontinence, skin breakdown. How is health care changing as the population ages? I think that like it or not we all have to accept the fact that the population is aging. I actually said to one of my geriatric colleagues at VCU last year that any medical student, unless they pursue pediatrics as their career choice, will be impacted by the aging population. It cuts across all ﬁelds of medicine and I think that physicians and all supportive staff are going to have to work together to face the coming onslaught.
