May and June are some of the most popular times of the year for weddings. One of the most picturesque and historical venues to get married is the Wren Chapel on the College of William & Mary. The chapel may be reserved for the weddings of William & Mary students, alumni, current faculty and staff, and the children of anyone in those groups. It is not necessary for both the bride and groom to have a college affiliation. Alumni are defined as those who have successfully completed at least one semester in a degree-granting program at William and Mary. The Sir Christopher Wren Building is the oldest college building in the United States and the oldest of the restored public buildings in Williamsburg. It was constructed between 1695 and 1699, before the city was founded, when the capital of the colony of Virginia was still located at Jamestown. The design of the chapel is similar to that of many collegiate chapels in Great Britain. The paneling is of native pine and walnut. The English eighteenth-century chamber organ is on loan to the College from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, as is the antique chandelier. The royal arms of Kings George I and II are displayed on the front of the gallery, a reminder of the close connection between Church and State during the College’s early years. Among those buried in the crypt under the Chapel are several distinguished Virginians including, Sir John Randolph, his sons John “the Tory” and Peyton, Bishop James Madison, as well as

Colonial „ America’s only 18th-century coffeehouse now open R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse, the Historic Area’s newest exhibition building, is the site of The Revolutionary City’s newest scene, “The Next Disagreeable Thing, the Stamp Crisis and the Ball of Revolution,” 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout June 12. In 1765, one of the most dramatic encounters of the period leading up to the American Revolution took place when an angry crowd protesting the hated Stamp Act confronted the appointed collector for Virginia, George Mercer, and demanded he swear an oath that he would not distribute the official stamped paper. The royal governor, Francis Fauquier, intervened and saved Mercer from the crowd. Mercer resigned his position the next day and the Stamp Act was repealed by the British Parliament the following year. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse is built on its original foundations with 18th-century construction techniques. The site in the Historic Area reflects its 18th-century role as a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious. Coffeehouse furnishings include carefully researched reproduction furniture, ceramics, glassware, hardware and other items representing the variety of activities that took place there. Reproduction maps, prints, advertisements and broadsides adorn the walls and period newspapers in the main rooms will contribute to the ambience. Hand-printed wallpapers cover the walls of the well-appointed private meeting room and the north room, both based on microscopic study of original building fragments. History curriculum may replace texts Colonial Williamsburg designs web lessons force to get school systems to sign up for the curriculum, which would be accessed through online licensing. In “The Idea of America,” teachers will have options to use other resources and interactive tools from dramatic readings of key texts to study of original source documents from newspapers to diaries. “The program enables students to do the investigating,” said Bill White, director of educational program development for Colonial Williamsburg. “They become part of the great debate – the ongoing process in which we, the individual citizens of the nation, participate as we work to realize the potential of our democratic values.” Each class study is examined through the lens of four sets of competing values, unity vs. diversity, private wealth vs. common wealth, law vs. ethic,s and freedom vs. equality. The curriculum will be available for schools next fall.
If a new interactive online history curriculum jointly developed by Colonial Williamsburg and education and technology firm Pearson takes off, that bulky high school American history book may be a thing of the past. The partnership to create “The Idea of America,” history and citizenship program was announced recently. The web-based curriculum is designed to replace the normal history text with a program that will allow students to learn lessons from history and master the principles of American citizenship by studying 65 case studies of important historical events and issues that changed America. Colonial Williamsburg’s “Virtual Republic,” an interactive program that allows students in different regions of the country to share and discuss their findings and conclusions, can be integrated into “The Idea of America.” Colonial Williamsburg would provide the historical expertise while Pearson would provide the connections and sales WWW.WILLIAMSBURGMAG.COM

Elaine Shirley Shirley’s day-to-day is unpredictable, as dealing with animals is varied. Each day brings its share of challenges and rewards. “I love my job, it it is very interesting,” Shirley said. “But I may have in my head to do abc and then we have to do xyz instead. That is the way it is with animals, you have to change what you have in mind and do what has to be done at a moments notice.” Shirley has been at Colonial Williamsburg for the past 25 years. She continues to enjoy interacting with visitors, educating them about her job. She has overseen the development of products that have been made from the wool from the sheep she tends, which she said helps people foster a deeper appreciation for the animals. “I certainly am thrilled to see the breeds we are working with becoming more popular and having visitors come up and recognize them and be interested in them,” she said. “What’s interesting is if you talk to them and you begin going back two or three generations, they tell you their ancestors were farmers. To connect them to their agricultural past is very important.”
Springtime is special for Colonial Williamsburg’s livestock husbander Elaine Shirley. She works diligently year round supervising the Rare Breeds Program, but during the spring, when the sheep begin to have offspring, it’s always a main event. “One of the high points of my job is the lambing and calving,” Shirley said in a recent interview. “When the animals are being born, that’s exciting. The lambs just come in the spring, but the cattle can have calves all year round.” The Rare Breeds program was begun by Colonial Williamsburg in 1986. The goal was preserve genetic diversity in livestock. Some of the selected breeds represent animals that may have been present in Williamsburg during the 18th century. The breeds that are part of the program have fewer than 200 registered in North America. Shirley was recently honored for her exemplary work with rare sheep, chickens and cattle. She was the recipient of the 2009 Bixby-Sponenberg Conservation Award. The award recognizes those individuals who have made a significant contribution to the conservation of livestock and poultry in the U.S. D. Phillip Sponenberg, professor of biomedical science at Virginia Tech, emphasized the importance of Shirley’s skill in husbandry and breeding of Leicester Longwool sheep, Milking Devon cattle and Nankin Bantam chickens. Her work is considered key in securing them from the threat of extinction. That is something Shirley takes very seriously. “The Rare Breeds Program has interested me a great deal, a number of the animals my dad grew up with are now on rare breeds list,” she said. “That needs to make us all of us aware of how quickly things can change. People need to keep track of these animals because we don't want to lose them.”

CLASS ACTS
Age: 17 Grade: Senior in high school (home school) Service: Volunteers at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
It is satisfying for the teen to know that she has assisted those who need it most, and feels it one of the high points of her volunteer experience. “It is very rewarding to me that I know I’ve helped someone, whether it be a patient, family member or employee,” she said. Through her altruistic endeavors, Privett has set goals for the future. “Volunteering at the hospital has helped me know that I want to be a nurse,” Privett said. “I’ve always been interested in being a nurse, but being able to see the great work that hospital nurses do makes me want be like them.” Privett encourages other teens to consider volunteer opportunities at the local hospital. “You don’t have to deal only in the medical clinical settings, but there are positions from IT to kitchen staff to support the hospital,” she said.
Joy Ann Privett has been volunteering at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for the past three summers and two school years. She also serves as a volunteer EMT-B with New Kent Fire and Rescue, helps teach a Good News Club at a local elementary school, and actively serves in her church’s church choir and Awana clubs. She heard about the volunteering opportunities at the hospital when she was 14 and decided it was a good fit. While there, she performs various tasks in a variety of departments. “There is so much I enjoy about volunteering,” Privett said recently. “I love being able to learn something new each time. I love just being able to help people, patients and employees during crisis events in their lives.” WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE, MAY 2010

Make Room for the Memories.
An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two livinghistory museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!
Save close to 20% on a combination ticket to both museums.
