WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2013
Not only is the weather usually ideal for all sorts of fun outdoor fall activities, but November is special because it marks the beginning of the holiday season. Thanksgiving is such a wonderful time to spend with friends and family. It is a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the excitement of the coming weeks. It’s also a great day to watch football! November has so many fun opportunities for shopping, ranging from the annual Holiday Antiques Show to purchasing something lovely from one of our locally owned gift shops. During November, there is a special emphasis to “Buy Local.” There is much to be found right here in town that will surely please even the most discriminating people on your holiday list! This month, we are introducing a new feature, “Women in Business.” You will meet entrepreneurs Yolanda Miller of Stick, Stone and Bone, Amanda Wilbourne from Nautical Dog, and Jennifer Raines from Quirks of Art. This is an ideal time of year to support them by stopping by during the holiday season to pick up a distinctive item for home, office or even for a pet! November also heralds the beginning of Christmas Town at Busch Gardens. Last year was the first time I had ever attended the event, and I will be going back! The park is transformed into a glittering wonderland and provides a great way to celebrate Christmas. I hope you are enjoying our new features, including “What’s Cooking.” This month highlights executive chef Richard Carr, “Pet Corner” features pet safety during the holidays and “Great Finds,” features an exotic desk at Classic Consignments. May you have a peaceful Thanksgiving full of happiness and gratitude. Comments are welcome at aefimetz@ vagazette.com or 345-2341.

what’s cooking?
An executive in the kitchen
By Ann M. Efimetz Executive Chef Richard Carr has been working in restaurants for most of his life. The affable Carr, who is the executive chef at Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill in Merchants Square, can’t picture himself anywhere else. After 28 years in his job,, d which at one point included s, he overseeing three restaurants, ent has a sense of accomplishment ngs and enthusiasm that he brings to his job every day. He oversees the day-today operations at Berret’s, among the busiest restaurants in town, which serves about 500 people daily. And although much of his responsibility is administrative, he still relishes time in the kitchen. “The best part of the job is that it is still handson,” Carr said in a recent interview at Berret’s. “I am still with food every day. You don’t see many chefs my age who are still in the kitchen, they have usually moved on to teaching. eaching. But I want to do this as long as I can.”” His recipes have helped distinguish Berret’s as one of the finest area seafood restaurants. In 2003, he wrote, “There is Still Romance in Food,” which features 100 of his recipes, ranging from seafood specialties to chicken and beef. The book has been very well received and many of the recipes have been on the restaurant menu. He is constantly devising new ways to present food and serve customers. That means ordering the finest ingredients available and the freshest seafood, much of it local. He strives to satisfy each patron with distinctive selections. “People can have seafood here that they probably
wouldn’t be able to have in their own kitchen,” he said. This month, the restaurant will roll out their fall and winter menu. Carr has been working with other chefs on staff to offer varied and exciting choices. “We always have Berret’s classic selections—five dinner selections that never change,” he said. “Then we have seven items that change in presentation depending on the season.” Over the past three decades, Carr said he has noticed a shift in how people dine. They are more healthcconscious and are well-versed on tthe health benefits of seafood. “I think people have grown o over time to accept more types of seafood and different styles of pr presentation,” he said. “There are a lot more healthy choices that people pic pick.” In order to better serve Berret’ customers, a gluten-free menu ret’s has been added for those with gluten sensi sensitivity. “ “We have had so many requests from people that we now have a gluten gluten-free menu,” he explained. “It has wo worked out really well. It is a growing tre trend and we wanted to give them a t menu that they could choose from.” Wh he’s not in the kitchen at work, When he still enjoys cooking for his wife, Terry, d ttwo daughters Casey and Kelly. and “People ask me what I cook for the family,” he said with a laugh. “I always say crabcakes or steamed seafood—shellfish. It’s hard for me to pick. There isn’t much seafood that I don’t like.” One of the aspects of his job he continually enjoys is the chance to interact with young student chefs. “I never stop being a teacher and a student,” he said. “I love the young chefs. They come in doing new things and they educate me. And I can educate them about the basics. There nothing better than getting a culinary student and seeing their excitement and feeding that.” Photos by Ann M. Efimetz WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2013

Not your average donut By Ann M M. Efimetz Efimetz Duck Donuts recently opened in the Monticello Shopping Center in the location formerly occupied by Starbucks. The store, locally owned by Amy and John Williams, has been turning out hundreds of homemade donuts, fresh to order. Duck Donuts features donuts freshly made while you wait. Customers can choose to have their donut dipped in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, lemon, peanut butter or maple glaze. They can be sprinkled with favorite toppings that run the gamut from peanuts to bacon. “It really is an experience–a show, to visit,” Amy Williams said in a recent interview. “The customers see the donuts being made from start to finish. Kids love watching the donuts being made right in front of them.” Duck Donuts has earned a loyal reputation on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The local franchise was purchased by the Williams’ to bring the distinctive sweets to our area. People have responded enthusiastically, enjoying the chance to order something truly different. When it comes to custom donuts, there are dozens of choices. One of the most popular requests is the maple bacon donut. 12
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2013
“It iis a d donutt with ith i maple l iicing i with real bacon on it,” t,” Williams said. “Another popular ular choice is the chocolate dipped donut peanuts.”” nut with peanuts In keeping with the fun experience for customers, Williams has been implementing regular specials to keep locals and visitors with something new to try. “I try to have one fun donut of the day that is normally not on the menu,” she said. “There are so many combinations that aren’t the standard choices. I like to offer a mixture of things to give people an idea of what they can do.” In addition to the wide variety of donuts, the store offers breakfast sandwiches incorporating healthy alternatives including whole grain bagel with egg white and turkey sausage. There’s also yogurt, muffins and a variety of coffee available. Seasonal items will encompass the holidays and beyond. There will be special fall and Christmas flavors, designed to be fun and delicious. And it is all made to order. “You can get exactly what you want,” Williams said. “The biggest difference is the fresh factor. The thing that sets us apart is that our donuts are as fresh as you can get.”
Since 1968, we’ve been serving the very best hot oven subs, pizza and strombolis, all made from the finest ingredients.

The holiday season offers people countless choices when it comes to finding the ideal gifts for the holidays. Although the ease of online shopping makes that an attractive option for people on the go, locally there is a chance for shoppers to find some truly unique items that probably won’t be found anywhere else. Chesapeake Bank is once again partnering with local Chambers of Commerce and local businesses to present “Shop Local Day” Nov. 9. The initiative is meant to entice shoppers to buy local and support businesses during this special time of year. The program is designed to help grow local economies. “When you buy local, we are recirculating money in our community that creates a stronger and more prosperous local economy,” said Meredith Fernandez, marketing manager for Chesapeake Bank. “We are trying to unite all the wonderful locally owned and operated businesses that make our communities unique and vibrant places to both live and visit.” There are several merchants that have signed up. ‘The Buck Stays Here” decal will be displayed at participating merchants. Special discounts will be offered to shoppers. “And they provide great customer service,” Fernandez added. “They are knowledgeable and passionate about their products and services.” More than 250 area merchants joined the spring “Shop Local” initiative. Fernandez hopes that number will grow further for the holiday program. Merchants ranging from restaurants to gift shops participated. People enjoyed visiting the
businesses and finding distinctive items and receiving special offers and discounts. The date in early November was chosen for folks to get a head start on their holiday shopping. Merchants who are interested in the initiative have until Nov. 8 to sign up. Locally owned and operated businesses in greater Williamsburg, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are eligible to participate. Registered merchants will have access to Shop Local Day promotional materials, advertising support and social media mentions leading up to the event. Visit blog.chesbank.com for information and a list of participating businesses.

Women’s world By Ann M. Efimetz
Our area is rich in history, attractions and beauty. It’s also rich in distinctive stores and businesses, many owned by local women. Yolanda Miller of Stick, Stone and Bone on Richmond Road opened the store last year and has experienced a growing clientele including locals and visitors. She is no stranger to the business world. For the past 23 years, she has owned Stick, Stone and Bone in Greenwich Village, located in New York City with her business partner Linda Curti. Miller has family in Newport News, and spent much of her childhood in this area. In Williamsburg, she enjoys a quieter lifestyle and she is glad to be able to share unique items with store visitors. “It is not frenetic, people can relax,” Miller said in a recent interview. “Williamsburg always seemed it would have a gentler pace of life that is more geared with my passion and the direction of the store.” The store sells fossils from ancient sea beds, minerals from Madagascar to Brazil, crystals from the Himalayan Mountains and carvings in stone and antler. There is also an array sterling jewelry with many varieties of gemstones. Miller recently decided to diversify. She now offers an array of antiques. “Antiques are one of my other passions,” she said. “My mother, Socorro, and my father, Leonce, gave me my knowledge and fascination with lovely antiques. I had some people come into the store last night and bought a lot of antiques. They enjoyed the selection that I had.” The store will celebrate its one-year anniversary Nov. 15. Miller will offer refreshments and light foods 5-8 p.m. 24
WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2013
She hopes people will stop by and get acquainted with the store, especially those who may be confused by the store’s name. “Some people think we are a restaurant,” she said with a laugh. “A local kabob place opened around the same time as us. To this day people will still come in and think we are a restaurant.” But once people do visit the store, they are usually hooked, she said. People often travel from as far away as Richmond and Virginia Beach. “Everything is falling into place and I am seeing an uptick now,” she said. “We are a destination spot, people need to know we are here. I am glad we are here. The whole premise of the store is to make customers feel good. It is about being in joy. We want people to leave feeling better when they leave than when they came in.” Amanda Wilbourne opened the Nautical Dog in 2006 in Mattaponi when she was fresh out of high school. Two years later, she decided to make a bold business move and open in New Town, which she saw as a popular local and visitor destination for dining and shopping. She felt her fun store that catered to dogs and their owners would be a good fit. And she was right. Sales have continued to grow. “I have steadily increased every year since I have been here,” Wilbourne said recently. “I have a niche. I have loyal customers who come all the time.” One of Wilbourne’s primary goals is to provide customers with dog foods that can’t be purchased at local pet or grocery stores. “All the food I sell cannot be bought within a thirty-to-fifty-mile radius and that in of itself brings people in.” All the pet food she carries is natural, organic and holistic. A large display is meant to educate those who visit the store regarding the ingredients contained in national brands. She enjoys helping customers learn more about the ingredients contained in their pet’s food and answers their questions regarding pet nutrition. Although the name of the store conveys its primary focus, there are many cat items contained in the store. Recently Wilbourne adopted a cat from Heritage Humane Society. Schwartzy, a 12-year-old black cat is now a permanent fixture. “One day I casually mentioned it would be great to have a store cat,” Wilbourne said. “And now I do. He is awesome, he sits behind the counter. He doesn’t mind the dogs that come in. He is perfect. And it I think it is kind of ironic that a cat lives in the dog store.” Schwartzy has become a focal point for visitors. “I am known for having dogs,” she said. “Some people
say they are not ‘cat people’ but would adopt a cat if it acted like Schwartzy. Hopefully by having him here, people will adopt more.” The upcoming months hold many special events including shopping incentives on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Wilbourne hopes that people who have visited the store before will consider returning, and regulars will pop by soon to see all the new products. “The store has evolved quite a bit since we opened,” she said. Quirks of Art, is owned by Jennifer Raines. The store, located in High Street, offers a variety of mostly handmade, Made-in-the-USA whimsical art, clothing, jewelry and gifts. Raines opened the store two-and-a-half years ago after owning Kinks, Quirks, and Caffeine for five years in the Colony Square Shopping Center on Jamestown Road. Several factors, including a downturn in the economy, resulted in that store closing. When she decided to reopen the store in the new location, she maintained some of the former name, but incorporated a new focus. “I changed the concept,” Raines said recently. “I thought it was a good idea to put art in the name so that people would have a better idea of what was inside the store.” Raines said the central location in High Street has been a marvelous boost for her business. It will likely get even better as more businesses open, including Le Yaca French Restaurant, which is opening nearby her store. “Business is great,” she said. “It continues to grow every month. The visitors find us easily and the locals make their way to us.” Raines said the aspect of the business she enjoys most is purchasing the items that are sold in the store. “At any given time, there are at least four hundred individual artists and studios represented,” she said. “They just all complement each other so well, that most people
assume that the merchandise comes from only a few vendors. It’s quite a challenge to manage, but really is what makes us so unique. I travel here, there, and everywhere to put this unique collection of works together. So much of my heart and soul goes into this business.” The store carries a wide selection of handmade jewelry, pottery, fused glass, furniture, Life is Good clothing and accessories and local art. Raines said that the items she carries from artisans in the U.S. are extremely popular. “I’m thrilled to see a surge in the popularity of handmade and Made-In-USA items,” she said. “It has been the basis of this business from the very beginning.” The future of the store is bright. “I am so excited to actually be able to plan for the future,” Raines said. “For a few years, it seemed that planning was a luxury that I didn’t have, it was all about surviving. My main goal is to continue to grow the business into what I know it has potential to be. I want to open a few other locations regionally. I’m just waiting for the right time and perfect locations. “

a great find
By Ann M. Efimetz This month’s Great Find is a Thailand-made rosewood desk and chair. You will find it at Classic Consignments at the Village Shops at Kingsmill. Store owners Renee Graves and Michelle Olesko obtained it from a couple who recently downsized and moved to California. “They had to give up a lot of their pieces,” Graves said. “This is
one of the most unique.” The desk and chair are exquisitely inlaid with mother-of-pearl, decorated in an Oriental motif. The piece was custom-made in the 1970s and took more than a year to create. “I would love someone to fall in love with it and buy it,” Graves said. The piece is selling for $3,500.00, firm. Salt Spa celebrates five years By Ann M. Efimetz Calming music plays and the lights dim softly. The sound of gurgling water provides gentle undertones. Clients slippered feet walk through lush salts as they take their place on a comfortable chaise. It is a session at the Williamsburg Salt Spa. And for those who have been attending salt therapy treatments at the spa located on Old Colony Lane, the results have been impressive. Salt therapy has been used to help people who experience a range of medical issues including allergies, asthma, chronic or temporary respiratory tract infections, emphysema, sinusitis, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, high blood pressure and cardiovascular issues. For the past five years, the spa, owned by Agnieszka Drygala, has been a haven for people who tout salt as a panacea for their respiratory issues. When she first opened the spa in 2008, there were only two salt spas in the U.S. Since, that number has climbed to approximately 30. Clients to the local spa arrive from as far away as North Carolina, Ohio and Florida for sessions. According to Drygala, allergy and sinus sufferers make up the majority of clients. “People notice a difference with sinus and allergies,” Drygala said. “That are the two big areas that we hear about.” The spa room contains more than 15 tons of therapeutic salt which creates a microclimate rich in minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, bromine
and iodine. Air temperature in the room is about 76 degrees. During the session, lights are dimmed to provide an atmosphere of deep tranquillity. Drygala has Photos by Ann M. Efimetz expanded services to include Himalayan Salt Stone massage. A therapist is on call and provides clients with a massage using warm salt crystal stones that are designed to soothe away stress and tension. Spa products including a full line of soaps, scrubs, face creams and masks, many made exclusively for the spa in Hampton Roads. Drygala said the customer base continues to expand. Members tell members and word-of-mouth has provided many loyal clients of all ages. Visit www.williamsburgsaltspa.com or call 229-1022. WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2013

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE!
November See & Do • Celebrate the grand opening of Colonial Williamsburg's newest historical reconstruction — James Anderson's Public Armoury — the weekend of Nov. 16-17. The industrial complex, consisting of a blacksmith shop and armoury, tin shop, kitchen, workshop and various outbuildings, is based on extensive archaeological and documentary research. • Sunday Brunch – noon to 2 p.m. every Sunday in the elegant Regency Room of the Williamsburg Inn overlooking the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course and accompanied by live jazz performed on the saxophone by Ron Lowder. Brunch includes made-to-order crepes and omelets along with Inn specialties such as cinnamoncrusted French toast and Chesapeake Bay-style crab Benedict, fresh pastries and cakes and a champagne cocktail. Reservations required. $45 plus tax and gratuity. 800-828-3767. • The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg – Two new exhibitions: “Painters and Paintings of the Early American South” exposes previously unexplored regional connections between painters and their subjects in the 18th century. “Threads of Feelings” makes its final and only U.S. appearance in the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. On loan from The Foundling Museum of London, the exhibition includes 59 books of fabric tokens — each a scrap of material reflecting the life of an infant child given up to the Foundling Hospital during the mid-18th century. Museum ticket or Colonial Williamsburg admission pass required. • Veterans Day Military March – 4:30 – 5 p.m. Nov. 11 on Market Square behind the Courthouse. This ceremony honors America's veterans. The event features the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums, military programs staff and members of Williamsburg community veterans groups. All armed forces veterans are welcome and encouraged to participate. No ticket required.
• “You Have My Heart” – 10:15 – 11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays in November at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. A guided tour of the exhibition “Threads of Feeling” provides a closer look at the heart-felt messages mothers left with their babies at London’s Foundling Hospital. Museum ticket or Colonial Williamsburg admission pass required. • Tavern Ghost Walk – 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. and 9 to 10 p.m. Tours depart from Shields Tavern nightly. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 12. This family-friendly tour is suitable for all ages and can accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. It’s a spirited, interactive peek at the 21st-century folklore of the Revolutionary City. • Pirates Among Us – This one-hour program begins at 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, 8:30, 8:45 and 9 p.m. Nov 2 and 6. Blackbeard is dead, and many of his crew have been tried and hanged in Williamsburg. This walking tour begins at the Secretary’s Office and introduces guests to the ghosts and ghouls of Blackbeard’s crew who tell their tales of piracy. Not appropriate for young children. $15. • Thanksgiving Dinner – Nov. 28 thanksgiving dinner is served in the taverns of Colonial Williamsburg from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Williamsburg Lodge from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Williamsburg Inn from noon to 4 p.m., and in Traditions restaurant in the Williamsburg Lodge from 4 to 9 p.m. Reservations required. 800828-3767. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

Holiday safety for pets Dr. Dale Sprenkel, owner of Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital recently shared some tips about keeping your pet safe during the holiday season.
Berret’s Seafood Restaurant In the Dining Room with this coupon 10% off food Monday - Thursday at Lunch or Dinner
With the holiday season approaching we want to ensure our pets are safe. From Thanksgiving through the New Year please remember many foods we consume are poisonous to our pets. When dogs and cats stray from their regular diet and sample rich party foods they can develop digestive problems. Refrain from giving your pet table scraps. The following are just some food items we enjoy that are poisonous to Fluffy and Fido (garlic, onions, raisins, grapes, and chocolate). Don’t forget to dispose of the turkey carcass, along with any bones from various meats in a secure container. When pets consume the carcass it can lead to pancreatitis, which can cause death. If you want to treat your pet on Thanksgiving, a good idea is to purchase treats that are made just for them. You can purchase something from your veterinarian or items recommended by your
veterinarian at a local pet food store. Decorations can look like food to pets. Remember to keep fresh flowers away from them. Lilies, poinsettias, and mistletoe are among some flowers that can be deadly. Tinsel, if consumed by a pet, can cause an intestinal blockage or even perforate the animal’s intestine. Best to leave the tinsel off the tree altogether. If you will be entertaining over the holidays or plan a party to ring in the New Year, provide your pet with a quiet location. Party favors contain streamers and other items that are choking hazards. Watch out for candles with cats around. Loud noises from firecrackers can hurt sensitive ears and cause pets to become scared. Safe and secure in a quiet bedroom or kenneled in a comfy crate will ensure a healthy and happy pet. You might even want to consider boarding them. At Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital we offer boarding for cats in a cozy cottage. For Fido we have spacious runs with beds, and meals provided. We even offer pampering and special treats from Santa. Magic awaits at Christmas Town By Ann M. Efimetz It’s that time of year at Busch Gardens. The park is transformed into a glittering wonderland with millions of twinkling lights and special attractions. Christmas Town debuted at the park in 2009 and since has become a special tradition for many locals and visitors. Like the popular Halloween themed experience of Howl-OScream, the Christmas Town experience emerges against the back drop of the park. Countries become veritable celebrations of various aspects of the holiday experience. Some of

the more visually spectacular attractions include the metamorphosis of Escape from Pompeii into a shimmering display of light. And don’t miss the bridge going from Germany to Italy. It is alive with the peaceful message of the season. Visit www.seaworldparks.com/ christmastown for hours, ticket information and further details.

I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor 60

Local Global War on Terror Veteran SFC Jason Rusk of Williamsburg currently stationed at Fort Eustis.
“I love that Mega is a local family owned, oriented, and operated business. From reverse osmosis filtration, to which PH level removes imperfections the best, they have washes and detailing down to a science. This 2011 will hold its own next to any 2014 solely because of the work they do. For the price of 4 washes anywhere else I can get a custom wash every day of the month.”
We would like thank all our customers for their patronage.
New Family Plan Offered Ask for Details
