November is synonymous with Thanksgiving celebrations, but there’s plenty to see and do in the time leading up to the holiday. Last year marked the launch of the Williamsburg Harvest Celebration, a collaboration among the City of Williamsburg, James City and York Counties and a celebration of farmand sea-to table in the place where the concept largely began more than 400 years ago. Among the many venues the celebration includes is the Williamsburg Winery, a place that, in addition to its award-winning wine, also offers quite the culinary experience. Speaking of wine, Literacy for Life’s annual Reading Between the Wines fundraiser welcomes guest author Dorothea Benton Frank, a New York Times-best-selling author, to the event this year. On Nov. 17 and 18, the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra will continue its Masterworks season with "The Great Symphony," including works by Schubert and Prokofiev. Of course, there are plenty of Thanksgiving celebrations to round out the month. At Berkeley Plantation, the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival on Nov. 6 remembers a day of thanks first proclaimed by Captain John Woodlief in 1619. And over at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown’s American Revolution Museum, the Food and Feasts of Colonial Virginia event takes visitors back to the food of 17th and 18th century Virginia from Nov. 24-26. Finally, once the turkey has been eaten and the thanks given, get in the Christmas spirit by heading over to Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town, a holiday wonderland that opens Thanksgiving weekend.

things to do

Photos courtesy of Virginia Thanksgiving Festival

Virginia Thanksgiving Festival recalls a founding tradition By Wesley Wright The first Thanksgiving took place in Virginia — not Massachusetts -- and the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival’s goal is to recreate the events that eventually led to what is now a popular American holiday. On Nov. 6, at the Historic Berkeley Plantation, located in Charles City, visitors will have the chance to spend the day having Thanksgiving food and fun much like the original celebrants did. 12

It’s a living history, of sorts, meant to emulate the time and tradition of the first Thanksgiving that took place in 1619. On Dec. 4 of that year, 35 settlers and around 20 African slaves arrived in Jamestown from England. They initially enjoyed cordial relations with the groups of surrounding natives, but that ended in abruptly in 1622, when a rash of Indian massacres ended the relationship between colonists and the natives, according to virginiathanksgivingfestival.com.

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016

In 1958, Virginia Sen. John J. Wicker brought the holiday back and that eventually led to the establishment of the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival as an incorporated business, then as a nonprofit organization a few years later. The festival has transformed itself as the years have worn on, maintaining some of the original traditions, including clothing and music from the time period. Visitors to Berkeley Plantation will be able to browse arts and crafts,

watch dancers, eat an authentic Thanksgiving dinner, listen to choral music to match the time period, and observe reenactments. Costumed interpreters will be on hand.

Christmas Town

By Wesley Wright

Photo courtesy of Busch Gardens® Williamsburg

By Wesley Wright Christmas may not come until December, but Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town is set to dazzle visitors beginning Nov. 25. The annual spectacle features seasonal shows, delightful dining and plenty of unique opportunities to shop and cross things off your gift list. But the undisputed star of the festivities is the lights – more than eight million of them will light up the night this year. Visitors can enjoy shows that highlight holiday traditions from around the world, visit Santa at his workshop at the North Pole and catch up with a heartwarming retelling of the Christmas story.

HeartChase participants can enjoy some good-hearted competition and battle heart disease at the same time. A fund-raising event for the American Heart Association, teams of 2-5 members -- some in costume -- compete in a timed chase through the community. Teams check in along the way, locate “power ups” and the team that collects the most points wins. Of course, they’ve also collected sponsors who agree to make donations and that support – and the physical activity – is what HeartChase is all about. Once a team registers, they

can take advantage of Game Advantage to help raise money before the running around starts. There is also an app to help keep track of everything. This year’s goal is to raise $32,500.

WANT TO PLAY? Where: New Town at 4801 Courthouse Street. When: Saturday, Nov. 12; check-in begins at 8 a.m., game play begins at 9:30 a.m. Cost: Registration is free, but all players must be registered. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Historic Triangle Community Services Center. Entering its 33rd year, the craft show is an ideal way to pick up unique gifts made by local artisans. In recent years, the event has featured jams, handmade glycerin

soaps and lotions, photography and home-made wreaths. Vendors have sold one-of-a-kind outfits for American Girl dolls and countrystyle decorations made out of clothespins. Tanya Lyons, one of the event’s volunteer organizers, said shoppers in search of a unique gift will be surprised by the wide array of options. “You never know what you are going to find,” Lyons said. “Sometimes this is the only place people can find that one particular item. It’s just a lot of fun.” All of the vendors are Co-

Reading Between the Wines welcomes Dorothea Benton Frank By Heather Bridges

New York Times best selling author Dorothea Benton Frank will visit Williamsburg on Nov. 7 as guest author of the sixth annual Reading Between the Wines fundraiser, benefiting Literacy for Life. As the nonprofit’s largest fundraiser, Literacy for Life development coordinator Deb Beach said total funds raised from last year’s event amounted to just under $74,000. Even so, the event raises more than funds, Beach said. It also raises awareness for Literacy for Life, a local organization that serves nearly 750

adult learners with the help of more than 300 volunteers. The organization offers a range of services, including adult basic education, English as a second language and Health Education and Literacy. Reading Between the Wines will feature a few of these adult learners sharing their stories, in addition to silent and live auctions, hors d’oeuvres and wine. And what better location for the fundraiser than Williamsburg Winery? “Kind of a natural match, we hope,” Beach said. Frank, who is also a public speaker and nonprofit fundraiser, will sign books toward the end of the event.

Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia at Jamestown, Yorktown By Jack Jacobs Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia explores the finer points of 17th and 18th century culinary creation in a three-day event starting on Thanksgiving Day. An array of food preparation and educational programming will take place at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Everything from stews to roasted meat to breads will be prepared. 22

Through food, the event aims to makes history more relatable. “Food is the gateway to history,” said Cindy Daniel, acting interpretive site manager for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. Daniel added that people easily recognize the value of comfort and celebratory food, because of the importance food has in their own lives. At Jamestown, visitors can observe the food preparation techniques of both American

Indians and the English colonists. Daily programing will explore the importance of corn to Powhatan’s people, and turkey and venison will roast over open fire in the village. In the recreated fort, colonists will demonstrate bread baking techniques, and butcher a pig at 11 a.m. on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25, according to Daniel. Sailor fare, such as salted fish, will be explored at the ships’ pier as will the ins and outs of how the colony was provisioned by ships.

About 15 miles away and roughly 170 years later, The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will present the realities of military eating at the Continental Army encampment, where visitors will learn how soldiers took beans, bread and salted meat and turned them into stews and soups. A program at the encampment will explore the consequences of plundering and theft, which happened when rations ran low, at 2 p.m. daily. At the museum’s Revolutionary-era farm, open-hearth cooking techniques will be displayed in the creation of various dishes. A demonstration of how to butcher a pig to make bacon and ham will also be presented at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 25 and Nov. 26. Visitors can’t sample food due to health and safety concerns.

Celebrate fall

in the vineyard

By Brandy Centolanza Those looking to enjoy locally grown food and wine in a relaxing atmosphere this fall need look no further than Wessex Hundred, home to The Williamsburg Winery. In addition to the winery, Wessex Hundred has a tavern, café, and hotel, and will be the place to be as you look to dive into some fall fun. In September, the Wine & Brine Lounge opened outside of the Gabriel Archer Tavern. Here guests can enjoy wine and regional 26

oysters as well as other shellfish, including mussels, clams, and shrimp cocktail. The lounge is located on a covered terrace overlooking the vineyard, weather permitting, allowing guests to sip their wine and nosh on their seafood dishes in a more intimate setting. “Every table was full the day we first opened, which is outstanding,” said Simon Smith, vice president of food and beverage for The Williamsburg Winery, and the Wedmore Place hotel. “We are delighted.”

The Wine & Brine Lounge will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature a different oyster weekly. Virginia has eight distinct oyster regions, and oystermen from each region will be on site when their oysters are on the menu. “Visitors will not only be able to enjoy the flavors of Virginia with Virginia wine and Virginia food, but we will also be sharing the story of the farmers,” said Michael Kimball, marketing director for The Williamsburg Winery. “Oysters are the signature food of our region, so it’s important we celebrate them. It’s a cultural celebration.” Frank Morgan of Chesapeake made the drive for opening weekend of the Wine & Brine Lounge with his wife and daughter. They enjoyed meeting the oystermen from Big Island Aquaculture of Gloucester. “It was a great opportunity to meet some of the people who make the oysters, and to hear their stories,” said Morgan. “It puts a human element on it. It’s like going into a winery and meeting the winemaker. There is something special about it. It was a fantastic day.” Williamsburg Winery will also be part of another celebration this fall: Williamsburg Harvest Celebration. The festival is back for its second year Nov. 4-13. The winery will host five events, including a Lambs and Clams dinner with shepherd Craig Rogers from Border Springs Farm, and Rappahannock Oyster Company. Rogers and other chefs from that dinner will lead a 30-mile bike ride followed by brunch the next day. “The Harvest Celebration is a celebration of our food and wine culture,” said Kimball. “It’s a celebration of the culinary arts, which is something we do daily at Wessex Hundred.”

Oysters are the signature food of our region.

There will also be a French dinner at Café Provencal at Wedmore Place and a winemaker challenge later in the week, and, back by popular demand, Williamsburg Winery will host the Masters of Taste Sommelier Challenge Dinner, one of the highlights of the Williamsburg Harvest Celebration. The dinner will include five courses and 15 world-class Virgin-

ia wines, and guests will have the chance to judge which wine paired best with which dish. “It’s a fun, interactive competition,” said Kimball. “Last year, it was a huge success.” Wessex Hundred aims to provide the best farm-to-table dining experience. One of the signature dishes at Café Provencal is the Wessex Hundred Spinach Pasta,

and the spinach is picked fresh daily from the property’s kitchen garden. The garden also has fresh herbs, carrots, peas, tomatoes, and other vegetables and fruits. “It allows us to do some unique things,” shared Smith, who hopes to expand the garden with the ultimate goal of Wessex Hundred becoming a self-sustaining farm. But Wessex Hundred, of course, is most well-known for The Williamsburg Winery. There are tours and tastings daily, as well as packages that include a tour, tasting and lunch at Gabriel Archer Tavern or a multi-course dinner at Café Provencal. In October, the winery held a release party for its signature wine, Adagio, which included music and food from local chefs. The Williamsburg Winery’s Vintage Reserve Chardonnay also came out last month. Fall is prime harvest season of the grapes at the winery. Autumn is the perfect time to visit the Wedmore Place hotel. The hotel has a new package, the Wessex Hundred Cycling Experience, which allows guests to enjoy the nearby Virginia Capital Trail. It includes wine, a massage, dinner, tour and tasting, and endurance snacks, with optional bike rental. “There are numerous, beautiful bike trails all throughout Williamsburg, and guests can ride around and experience Williamsburg on two-wheels,” Kimball said. “It’s a romantic, relaxing, adventurous experience.” Wessex Hundred is also happy to be a part of the Williamsburg Tasting Trail, which highlights the area’s adult beverage scene. “Williamsburg likes to celebrate the arts, and craft beverages are just another form of art,” Kimball said. “I think the Tasting Trail has certainly enhanced the Williamsburg experience.”

Williamsburg Symphony is pulling out all the stops By Ryan McKinnon Catch a world-class musical performance this autumn with a performance by the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra. The organization’s 33rd season includes a show at the Kimball Theater on Nov. 17 and 18. The orchestra has grown from an ensemble of volunteer musicians 33 years ago to a professional orchestra that has earned acclaim

32

and performed internationally. The group made its international debut in January with a performance at the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts. Carolyn Keurajian, the symphony’s executive director, said concert-goers should expect to enjoy some pieces they may not have heard before. “(Conductor) Janna Hymes always does a wonderful job of programming hidden gems,”

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016

Keurajian said. “Our musicians love playing in the orchestra because they get to play pieces that they wouldn’t normally get to play.” November’s performance features “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring” by British composer Frederick Theodore Albert Delius, “Pavane, op. 50” by Gabriel Faure, Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, op. 25 and Schubert: Symphony in C major, D. 944, "Great." This is Hymes’ thirteenth season as conductor. A Fulbright Scholar, Hymes has guest conducted for the Houston, Indianapolis, Oregon, North Carolina and New Hampshire symphony orchestras. The Virginia Gazette described her as “an exceptionally skilled conductor whose artistic and refined style gets to the heart of the music.... Hymes's extraordinary work in making it come together resulted in absolutely first class performance.” Shows begin at 8 p.m. at the Kimball Theater. For tickets to the Nov. 17 and 18 performances call 229-9857. Season subscriptions for all five of the 2016-17 performances are available starting at $200. Subscribers get discounts to December’s Holiday Pops Concert. For more information, visit www. williamsburgsymphony.org.

linving & retiring here

Active senior living focuses on

the mind and body By Brandy Centolanza Whether you are looking to exercise your body or your mind, local communities catering to the 55 and up crowd offer plenty of classes and activities to help you maintain an active lifestyle. Verena at The Reserve has fitness classes including chair Zumba, Flex Fit, and a walking club as well as arts and crafts, adult coloring, writing classes, poker, Bridge, Scrabble, chess, and bible study. 92-year-old Lorna Brink, a resident for four years, has been playing Bridge for 60 years. She plays Bridge with a crowd of 25-30 players there on Sundays and Tuesdays and offers Bridge instruction for beginners and advanced players on Monday evenings. “I like it because it keeps you sharp,” Brink says. “It’s amazing. We have a 99-year-old woman who also plays with us regularly. I’m very happy when we get together and play. I like Bridge. It is something that I just need to do.” 38

“Keeping the mind active is … important,” agrees Michelle Sieling, director of sales and marketing at Verena at The Reserve. “There’s a nice mix of things to do here. Our residents not only enjoy participating in the activities, but they also like the social interaction.” The same can be said at The Settlement at Powhatan Creek, which has both an indoor and outdoor pool, a fitness center, a tennis court, and two pickleball courts. Water aerobics classes are popular at The Settlement because the exercise is easy on the joints as well as for those who suffer from arthritis. “We have many groups that meet on a regular basis, including three water classes, pickleball, walking, cyclists, aerobics, and yoga,” says Patee Ramsey, an administrator at The Settlement. “Activity groups are formed based on resident interest. She enjoys swimming, going to the gym, walking the trails, and is also a member of the book club and memory club. “You could be busy all the time because there is so much to do here,” Hanchey says. “You can Residents enjoy a variety of activities at be as active or as nonVerena at the Reserve. active as you want. A toe-tapping accompaniment to history By Savannah Williams Williamsburg is a nexus for Colonial history, but for history buffs who crave a diversion – and for musical enthusiasts of any kind – the Virginia Musical Museum is the perfect destination. Virginia has a rich musical history, with natives Patsy Cline, Wayne Newton, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bruce Hornsby leading the list of notables. As one of the earliest territories, Virginia has witnessed a comprehensive evolution of American music. The Virginia Musical Museum honors this growth by offering displays on some of the most prominent musicians born in the area, and a wide array of historical musical instruments and devices. “In everything we do, we try to show Virginia history,” says Buddy

Parker, owner of the museum. “Virginia has had an impact on music everywhere in the world.” The museum is home to one of only two known existing Joseph Shudi Harpsichords from 1790. It also has one of the first Edison recording devices, Wayne Newton’s car, and a selection of music boxes, organs, phonographs, and nickelodeons. The Virginia Musical Museum is at 6316 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturdays, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, and $8 for students and senior citizens. Children under age 5 are admitted free of charge. For more information, call (757) 3035907 or visit www.virginiamusicalmuseum.com.

local business profile

Hatley Mason

Basement bookstore unlocks new worlds By Heather Bridges Hatley Mason gets the question a lot. Why the ‘mermaid’ in Mermaid Books? Well, there are several reasons, Mason says. The Mermaid Tavern in London was a popular haunt among literary greats. Mason said there was also once a Mermaid Tavern in Jamestown. Mermaids, he said, are often mentioned in ancient literature. Then, of course, Emily Dickinson once penned in a poem: “I started early – took my dog / And visited the sea – / The Mermaids in the Basement / Came out to look at me.” Located beneath Kilwins on Prince George 44

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016

Street, Mermaid Books is a cozy basement bookstore filled with used and rare books. Or, as Mason describes them, friends. “Books can change your whole life,” said the storeowner. “They’re great friends.” Mason had been a longtime customer of the store before he became owner. Mermaid Books was started in 1977 by Mary Lewis Chapman who Mason said saw a need for “good used books.” To this day, Chapman still works at the store on select days. But Mason took the reins from second owner Aurise Eaton when, one day, he visited the store and discovered Eaton was leaving to serve in the Peace Corps and had to close the shop.

That was in 2009. He’s been there ever since, and Mason wouldn’t have it any other way. “The greatest thing is meeting people from all over,” he said. “Helping them find books and things … that might help them in their personal growth.” Mason said a good percentage of the store’s business stems from College of William and Mary students. But, in talking about personal growth, Mason encompasses more than just academic growth. “Stories are liberating, and they help unlock our thoughts,” Mason said. “If we can open a book and delve into another world, it takes us out of our own.” Worlds certainly await on the packed shelves of Mermaid Books. While 90 percent of the books are used, Mason said the store does carry new coloring and activity books, select new children’s books, as well as new editions of popular classics from Shakespeare, Jane Austen and the like. Otherwise, you’re never quite sure what you might find in the store: from books on gardening, nature and cooking to works by Hemingway, Faulkner and Fitzgerald. “This is an ever-changing place,” Mason said. It adds to the overall experience that Mason said the bookstore hopes to create. “There really is no time here,” he said. “It’s a place where you can kind of come in and experience things that you’ve never seen before.” When customers take the stairs from Prince George Street down into Mermaid Books, they’ll discover more than just shelves of books. It’s an intimate space, comfortable and colorful. A relatively quiet space, apart from the jazz music playing in the background. And it’s a space where the most high-tech item is the credit card machine, Mason said. The store phone is a 1940s rotary phone.

Photos by Heather Bridges

The clock is a wind-up clock. And Mason keeps track of sales in a ledger. It’s a place that transcends time. A place where customers can escape, explore and engage with millions of friends. “This store is packed with stories,” Mason said. “There are millions of stories on these shelves, so many books.” For more information, call 757-229-3603 or visit mermaidbookswilliamsburg.com.

things to do

Another reason

to love Fridays By Ryan McKinnon Celebrate the end of the work week every Friday with free beer tastings at the DoG Street Pub ‘s Hair of the Dog Bottle Shop. Each week, the bottle shop features a different theme or brewery and serves light snacks to accompany the tastings. Lauren Davidson, the general manager of the pub and the bottle shop, said the events are about building community and exposing people to unique brews. “It’s all about introducing people to something they maybe previously wouldn’t have tried on their own,” Davidson said. “They are a lot of fun.” The Nov. 4 tasting will coincide with Williamsburg’s Harvest Festival, so the shop is serving four different Harvest-style seasonal fall ales. On Nov. 11 sample some mead from Yorktown’s Melo Lion

Meadery, and on Nov. 18 enjoy a taste of Heavy Seas Brewery out of Maryland. The Black Friday tasting on Nov. 25 will feature a variety of rare beers the pub has acquired over the past year. And that morning the shop will release the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Whenever a brewery is featured, a representative will be on hand to answer questions and help explain the brewing process. The shop is directly behind the restaurant in the space previously occupied by Everything Williamsburg at 401A W Duke of Gloucester Street. Tastings are held every Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m. above: Danny Corliss serves tastings of American Heritage and King's Mountain during a recent Friday afternoon tasting at the Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop in Williamsburg. Positive results I knew that advertising my new small business in the Williamsburg Magazine would be a wise decision. I was right! The response has been so positive and encouraging. The magazine ad definitely got the word out that there is a new consignment store in town and the map included in the magazine led customers and consigners right to my door. Working with Kathy and LouAnne has been a great experience. Their design ideas and work ethic resulted in the exact ad that I had in mind. I have always been a fan of the Magazine and found it to be a wonderful resource. It is also a great supporter of the small business owner and I am proud to advertise with them. -Joni Spangler, Owner Joni's Consign & Design
