Welcome to the Williamsburg Magazine’s 50th anniversary issue. Of course, we will celebrate our Golden Anniversary for the rest of the year, but this month we take a special look back. The magazine was ﬁrst published as the “Publick Observer” in 1964. Society and our area have changed a lot over the past ﬁve decades. The onset of online news and social media has changed the way we get our information. And more changes will be coming in the future. Despite the many changes that have occurred, what remains the same is our commitment to informing visitors and locals of our area about attractions and happenings of interest in the most reader-friendly way possible. Back in 1964, you could pop by Rose’s Department Store (now the location of Marshalls) and buy three postcards of local scenes for 10-cents. You could also purchase a souvenir t-shirt for $1, a tri-cornered hat for $1.98 and souvenir pennant for 35-cents. This issue features a story about the Williamsburg Pottery and Parlett’s, both of which were in business 50 years ago. There’s also a story highlighting some of the other businesses with a long local history. Our Great Find this month features Antique & Estate Items Williamsburg. Our Pet Corner features Dr. Tim Stiff and the Animal Emergency Center in Yorktown, ready to help pets and their owners in the evenings, weekends and holidays when situations arise. Not everything has changed in greater Williamsburg over the past 50 years. Some businesses have been in business that long—and longer. They may have changed with the times, but some of our area restaurants and stores have been serving locals and visitors for decades. Ace Peninsula Hardware, located in the Williamsburg Shopping Center was once located in the location now occupied by Goodwill. The Deaver family purchased the business in 1989, the year after the business moved from the Goodwill location into the former location of the Colony Lanes bowling alley. The store has grown over the years, from its original size of 3,500 sq. feet when it moved into the shopping center in the mid-1950s, to more than 16,000 sq. ft. today. Despite the changes, some things have remained the same. “The philosophy is the same,” Kevin Deaver said recently. “The most important thing is customer service and making sure we have the right people here to help the customers and the right quality products and make sure we have them in stock.” Over the years competition has heated up with the arrival of larger stores, but Deaver said customers return for the friendly, home-town service they receive. “When we are working long hours during a hurricane or in the snow, we are helping our neighbors,” Deaver said. “We go to church with them and see them around town, so literally we are helping our neighbors.” Will they be in business in 50 more years? “We hope so,” Deaver said with a laugh. “That is our plan.” The Jefferson Restaurant on Richmond Road has been in business on Richmond Road for more

than 50 years. It was founded in 1956 by James and Harriet Petrell. Their grandson, Mark Wright, currently owns and manages the restaurant. Those who frequented the restaurant in the 1950s could opt for a variety of food choices— some that are still on the menu— albeit for a bit more. In 1956, diners could order six York River oysters on the halfshell for 35 cents. Filet Mignon with broiled mushrooms was $1.10 and chicken Chop Suey was available for 60 cents. Those interested in dessert could order a piece of pie for a dime. Wright said that the goal of the restaurant family is serving customers with a smile, making them happy and inviting them back for to dine or for special occasions. “The greatest thing in this business is meeting the people from all over the world and seeing them come back to the restaurant,” Wright said recently. “Some people come in and notice things that have changed or moved since their last visit.” The restaurant is more than just a business for Wright, whose son, E.J. hopes to one day take over the restaurant from his dad. “I look at the Jefferson as a home away from home for my staff, myself and everyone who comes through those doors,” Wright said. owns the business with her husband, Dave, bought the business several years ago and since has been continuing the legacy started by the Schmidt’s in the 1930s. “We are in a unique position, having a 75-year old business,” DeBlass said recently. “That comes with a lot of responsibility and I take that very seriously. It is an honor to own this store. Not a day goes by without someone commenting on how we have helped their family, whether it be a birth, a death or wedding. Owning the oldest flower shop in a place like Williamsburg that has such a long history is what attracted me to the business.” The Schmidt’s opened the business on Duke of Gloucester Street to fulfill the need to provide fresh flowers to area residents, businesses and restaurants. Years later, the business moved to the corner of Richmond Road and Lafayette Street and was owned by Blair Burleson. DeBlass bought the business in 2004. “In the 75-year history, the store has only had three locations,” she said. “The reason that the store still survives is the community of Williamsburg. It is the only thing that remains consistent. The community is an incredible supporter of the business. We have people who ordered their prom flowers from Schmidt’s and have traveled around the world and still order flowers from us.” The College Shop in Merchants Square was in the building that currently houses Williams & Sonoma. The business was owned by R.P. Wallace. The store has moved a couple doors down and is owned by Sam Wallace and his brother Cabell and it bears the name of their grandfather, R.P. Wallace & Sons General Store. The Wallace family also owns The Christmas Shop, also in Merchants Square, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “Even though I never met my grandfather, he died before I was born—I feel a lot of satisfaction keeping

the family business going,” Sam Wallace said recently. “My brother Cabell and I own the business together and the fourth generation—my son Sam III has just come into the business. “ In 1964, an ad in the Publick Observer enticed visitors to the College Shop to purchase Williamsburg charms in gold and silver, 18th century posy holders, Williamsburg playing cards and hand-dressed colonial dolls. Products may have changed but people continue to shop at the store for distinctive items to remember their trip here. “Sometimes I think about it and the things from our shops are all over the world,” Wallace said. “They are everywhere, and that is really neat. We have people from all over the world visiting Williamsburg. I have been in antique shops and seen plates made for my store 40-50 years ago that had my name on it. That is very interesting to me.” Wallace attributes the success to a few simple tenets, “I think that is key to any business is staying on top of the trends, making sure you have good merchandise at a fair price, have it stock and keep it in stock, and have good employees who are well versed in customer service and looking after your guests.” The Old Chickahominy House opened as a tea room, near the Chickahominy River in 1955. They served ham biscuits and homemade pie. Today, 59 years later, at their location at 1211 Jamestown Road they continue to serve ham biscuits and homemade pies. They also have a three-story antiques and gift shop. Binns Fashion Shop, still located in Merchants Square, advertised in the Publick Observer, “Being a shop dedicated to serving every whim and every necessity of Milady’s wardrobe that has enjoyed such favorable circumstances and such approbation from the publick that it has been enabled to expand from a small, humble beginning to the beautifully modernized and enlarged facility presently located in Merchants Square on Duke of Gloucester Street. This is the place to come for ﬁne apparel that goes everywhere.” Goodyear Auto Service Center was in its location at 1501 Richmond Road when the Publick Observer was ﬁrst published. The center advertised tires, batteries and accessories with a phone number, CA9-5515. The phone number today is 229-5515. Some of the other businesses around town that were here 50 years ago were Williamsburg Drug Co., now in McLaws Circle (formerly in the location that is now Williams & Sonoma in Merchants Square), Queen Anne Dari-Snak on Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg Pottery on Richmond Road in Lightfoot, Parlett’s in New Town, This Century Art Gallery on N. Boundary Street and the Williamsburg Players, which has been presenting plays in our area for nearly 60 years.

Where locals went to shop Williamsburg Shopping Center By Ann M. EÀmetz For more than 50 years, locals and visitors have frequented the Williamsburg Shopping Center. Fifty years ago, the shopping center had a large advertisement in the Publick Observer heralding the center’s “8 Ways Better” including the ability to “Park & Shop,” assuring patrons that stores featured famous brands, friendly service and a wider selection. The “Progressive Merchants of Williamsburg Shopping Center” were listed as: Colony Bowling Lanes, S&J Appliance Center, Capitol Loan Company, Colonial Stores, The Launder Center, Hallmark Jewelers, The Williamsburg Shop, Young Fashions,

Modern Beauty Salon, Nottingham Pharmacy, Peninsula Hardware, F.W. Woolworth’s, Zuzma’s Barber Shop and Rich’s Super Market. Today, there are plans to redevelop the shopping center, which was recently purchased by a new owner. Continuing a legacy at the Williamsburg Pottery By Sally Grace Holtgrieve

During the great depression James (Jimmy) Maloney came to Williamsburg to apprentice for a brick maker. Though he spent much of his time making bricks for projects including the Colonial Parkway, he also learned to make pots. In 1938 Maloney established Williamsburg Pottery, building a kiln and a house for his family on 100 acres he purchased for around $1,000, according to operations manager and grandson Erik Wright. “He made all the pottery,” said Wright. “His children helped with decorating and loading the kilns.” Maloney found a niche selling tourists reproductions of the pottery settlers used at Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg. Before the installation of interstate 64, everyone traveling between Richmond and Norfolk or Virginia Beach used Route 60 and passed the store. Maloney continuously expanded his business. Eventually he began importing items to sell along with the goods he created on location. He traveled to glass factories in West Virginia and textile mills in North Carolina. “He would g go right g up p to the front door and ask to

talk to the owner,” Wright said. “He’d say he wanted to buy a truckload of stemware, make a deal, and put it in the back of is truck to sell to his customers here.” Maloney passed away in 2005 and his wife Kim owns the store now. She believes the store is unique because people can still find a bargain on quality pieces. “Making it affordable was Jimmy’s legacy,” she said. “We want to keep that.” Wright began apprenticing at Williamsburg Pottery three days after he graduated high school. “I’ve pretty much done every job here,” he said. “Whether it’s making lamps, being a potter, a cashier or manager.” He said he loves the hard work and knows that was what the company was founded on. Wright remembers customers who have been coming in since he was a kid and enjoys hearing their stories about the “old days” when the store floors were still made of dirt. Future plans for Williamsburg Pottery include branching into e-commerce. “We’ve always focused on our local store here,” said Wright. “But in the near future we will have an online store. We have all the infrastructure to do it.” The online store is expected to launch in the first or second quarter of next year.

Your title? Second grade teacher/Team Leader at Matoaka Elementary How long you have been at the job? Beginning seventh year of teaching in Williamsburg and have been teaching for 10 years. What do you like most about teaching? The kids! I love to see them smile when they understand something new. Hearing them laugh and seeing them enjoying themselves as they are learning, hoping that they think of it more as an adventure than as just work.

How did you get the idea about the stability balls? I attended a workshop at my church and the speaker spoke about the link between physical movement and the brain’s ability to process information. He spoke about a book “Spark” by Dr. John Ratey. I read the book and began researching the connection between movement and the brain. That led to ﬁnding many articles on the use of exercise equipment as well as stability balls in the classrooms. I gathered much of my ﬁndings and information and asked for a meeting with Andy Jacobs, the principal at Matoaka. After consideration, he agreed that I could give it a try last year.

How did you go about introducing the balls? A contract was created for the children and the parents to sign, as well as rules for the use of the stability balls. The children were ﬁrst introduced to them at our small group reading table. After a presentation to their parents at Back to School night each child had a ball of their own at their desk for the rest of the school year. They always had the option to ask for their traditional chair to be returned to them as well as knowing that they might lose their ball for a time if they broke a rule or broke their contract.

and expectations are set, the students look forward to using them as their classroom “chairs”. As an educator, I ﬁnd it is important to learn about the students and how they can best be served. If having a ball as a chair is one small way

for me to help them focus on their work, I’ll happily watch the wave of second grade students gently bouncing their way as they learn throughout their school day.

What was the reaction of the kids? They loved them! They knew the expectations, they were eager to keep their stability ball chairs so they tried hard to follow the rules and stick to their contracts. What benefits have you seen in the classroom? Children need to move. I try to create activities that allow my students to be away from their desks, working on the floor, in the hallway, even outdoors. However, there are times that require a “sit at your desk and write” situation. What I have found is that students can often find ways to get out of their seats just so they can move around. That said, the amount of excuses for bathroom breaks, needs to sharpen a pencil, get a tissue, and the like were decreased. By being able to move by bouncing while they worked, the children didn’t need to be away from their desks during more structured “seat work” times because they could move while they worked. Do you plan to continue using them? Most definitely! I found great success last year with the class and the use of the stability balls. Once the rules are in place

“People say our store is like a museum,” said Joe McFaden of Estate & Antique Items Williamsburg. “The difference is I don’t charge admission.” Joe and Wilma McFaden have owned the Norge shop for almost four years, though Wilma has been in the business for more than 25. Shortly after moving to Williamsburg 27 years ago, Wilma attended an auction with a friend and purchased several items. She sold some through an advertisement in

the newspaper and found the process exciting. Soon after, she met an antique dealer and began renting space. Joe worked in construction for decades, and still works a few days a week. That frees up the rest of his time to manage the store with Wilma. “What we’ve tried to do with this shop is keep it well-ordered,” Joe McFaden said. “One of the comments we get all the time is that it’s displayed so nicely.” The couple believes the pieces should be shown in

“For example, we have a “man cave” section and a tea-time area. We try to reach a wide audience through a wide selection of items and price range.” Items come from people who are downsizing or moving, auctions and estate sales. “The majority of our pieces are from homes right here in Williamsburg,” Wilma explained. The oldest item currently in the shop is a primitive cupboard from the late 1700’s. There’s also an ax from around 1780. So why choose old over new? “You can buy really nice solid wood antique furniture for much cheaper than new furniture of the same quality,” Joe McFaden said. “A reproduction piece is three or four times the price of our antiques.”

The couple maintains a “nopressure” policy for customers. They are encouraged to look and ask questions without fear of a strong sell. “If a person buys a piece here it’s because they want it,” Wilma McFaden said. “I don’t ever want someone to have buyer’s remorse.” The McFadens have never regretted their decision to open the store. At 3,000 square feet they have already expanded the shop to their liking, decorating and furnishing it just the way they want, simultaneously assisting others in doing the same with their homes. “I think we ﬁnally found what we’ve been looking for all these years,” Joe McFaden said.

Just like with people, emergencies for pets can happen after the doctor’s ofﬁce closes. That’s where Animal Emergency Center in Yorktown can help. The center, owned by Dr. Tim Stiff, can help with a variety of situations that can arise after veterinarian ofﬁces close, which simply—are nights, weekends and holidays. People from throughout Hampton Roads, including greater Williamsburg, make the drive when getting to their vet isn’t possible. “If your vet is closed, we will be open,” Stiff said in a recent interview. “Anything that is needed except specialized services we are ready to do.” Stiff said he sees a lot of traumatic injury and very sick animals. The center is equipped to do xrays, blood work and other testing. They are there to help stabilize the animal and provide the results for the client’s veterinarian for follow up.

In some cases, the animal can’t be saved, or families seek the center to help them when their pet is critically ill. “We get a lot of terminal patients,” Stiff said. “The family has come to the emotional place where they are ready to deal with it. It is an unpleasant thing. You don’t want to have to deal with, but that is something we do.” Stiff added that the center doesn’t do vaccinations or ﬂea and tick preventatives. The center has moved to its location on Route 17 in Yorktown last fall, after moving from Victory Boulevard, where the center was located for more than ﬁve years. People have learned about the center mostly through word-ofmouth. Stiff is glad to be there to help. “You hope that people never need you. But they do.” Hours are daily 5:30 p.m.-8:30 am. The 45th annual An Occasion for the Arts is scheduled this month, Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 4-5. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The show is located in Merchants Square, Duke of Gloucester, Price George and N. Boundary Streets. The show will feature 150 exhibit booths with 144 artists selling work ranging from photography to distinctive jewelry. Exhibitors were chosen to display and sell their work by juror Emily Smith, executive director of 1708 Gallery in Richmond and artistic director for InLight. According to An Occasion president Jane Medlin-Burton, Smith has served on the Virginia Commission for the Arts grant review panel and is a statewide speaker for the Museum of Fine Arts. Performing artists are an integral part of the event. This year 27 groups are scheduled to present performances including instrumental, dance and vocal performances at the Courtyard Stage and the City Square Stage. The performances run all day, both days and provide entertainment for people of all ages. New this year is an expanded celebration of youth and the arts. There will be interactive, fun and educational activities for kids of all ages inside the Williamsburg Community Building. That’s also where the juried Youth Art exhibit will be showcased, featuring 30 schools and 700 pieces of art. The expanded programming for youth will also include workshops,

demonstrations and other art activities including opportunities to create original art. The City Square Stage will feature the spirited performances of seven youth groups. A Taste of Beer and Wine will be held 1-5 p.m. Sunday in the Courtyard Café. The venue offers people a chance to sample products from some of Virginia’s ﬁnest breweries and vineyards. Winery to release 2012 Adagio The Williamsburg Winery will hold a special event 6:30-9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 in celebration of the release of the 2012 Adagio. The Adagio has emerged as the leader of an elite collection of ďŹ&#x201A;agship wines for the state of Virginia. The 2010 Adagio is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Winemaker Matthew Meyer, in keeping with the bold style of the wine, created an intriguing blend for the 2012 that consists of equal parts Malbec and Petit Verdot. The Williamsburg Winery will commemorate the release of their 2012 Adagio with a grand party. Those who attend will descend a candle-lit staircase onto a red carpet,

complete with photographers. Small-plates will be prepared by Wessex Hundred Executive Chef Ika Zaken paired with four vintages of Adagio. Pas de deux ballet performances and music will be part of the event. Guests are encouraged to wear black and silver cocktail attire. Admission includes a sampling of four vintages of Adagio and four small-plates. This event will offer an open wine bar with select vintages of Adagio being available for purchase. Eric Aymer, Executive chef at Holy Mackerel By Ann M. EÀmetz Eric Aymer quickly admits he loves to cook. He enjoys his time in the kitchen, whether at home preparing meals for his family, or coming up with imaginative specials at Holy Mackerel, located on Longhill Road. “I just like cooking,” Aymer said in a recent interview at the restaurant. “I love Southern food and I like taking ingredients and mixing them up with a Southern ﬂair.” Aymer has been at the restaurant for a couple months and already he has revamped the menu and has added his culinary expertise to offer different selections for new and regular patrons to try. His goal is to enhance the restaurant and entice people of all ages to visit frequently. “I want this to be a fun, familyfriendly atmosphere with amazing food,” Aymer said. “I am trying to appeal to families and people who are interested in good food.” Aymer’s love for cooking is life long, having learned from his mother, who he describes as “an amazing cook.” “From a very young age I was making breakfast for my family,” he said. “We are a very food-oriented family, we express love through food.” He graduated from Johnson & Wales University-Norfolk and worked in various positions including sous chef for Embassy Suites. Before arriving in Williamsburg, Aymer was the chef at Mahi Mahs in Virginia Beach. He has continued the creative style menu that he enjoyed at Mahi Mahs at Holy Mackerel. His emphasis is on fresh ingredients.

“We don’t do farm-raised seafood here,” he said. “Everything is fresh, made to order. Everything is fresh and as local as possible.” And there is plenty of landlubber selections to choose from. Steaks are hand-cut and that the barbecue, salmon and chicken wings on the menu are smoked in the kitchen. “I am very proud of the menu,” he said. “We have barbecue, ribs, chicken, ribs and quite a few vegetable options. The new menu features a lot of pasta selections. There is something for everyone.” Aymer said he is trying to incorporate more organic ingredients into the menu, including locally-grown

produce. All the ﬁsh selections on the menu, with the exception of the tilapia and salmon, are local. “You can’t really improve on nature,” he said. “Whatever is fresh and local is probably best.” Aymer said he wants to continue offering fun experiences for restaurant guests including live music when possible. Last month, the restaurant threw a ‘Locals Appreciation Party.” It’s all to provide people with a place to go to have fun and excellent food. “My goal is for this restaurant to be the local destination for seafood,” he said.

More than paper at Parlett’s By Sally Grace Holtgrieve “Everyone has a box under their bed of greeting cards and letters that people wrote them,” said Melissa Jones, owner of Parlett’s Paper Expressions, a family name that goes back generations. Jones was raised in a paper world. Her grandmother Ruth Roberts opened Parlett’s Plaks in 1963 on Prince George Street, letting her help out during visits. Eventually, Jones’s aunt, Sue Hill, and her mother Jackie Sunderland took over the store, ceasing production of plaques and focusing on stationary and invitation design. Sunderland moved the shop to its location in New Town in 2010, and soon decided to retire. Last year Jones and her husband, Aaron Jones, became owners. Melissa Jones spends her weekends and summers at the shop, but daily operation is run by Aaron, who serves as store manager. Sunderland stays active at the store, helping customers and continuing the smooth transition. Customer service is important. They are constantly listening to their client’s needs and wishes and ordering products tailored to the distinct tastes of those who shop at store. “We spend evenings doing research and making orders for the store,” Melissa Jones said. That aspect is one they feel distinguishes them from larger companies. “There’s not some corporate ofﬁce telling us what to carry in our store,” said Aaron Jones. “Every single thing you see here was picked out with the people who shop at this store in mind. The couple also hopes to develop a product which could be marketed to other stores. “One possibility is a line of stationary exclusively for children,” Aaron Jones said. “Most brands each have one choice for kids, but there isn’t a whole line just for them.” The onset of the digital age has not worried the family, and they are not concerned about its long range impact. “I don’t have any statistics to back me up, but I honestly think (the industry) has picked up a little,” said Sunderland. “People are never going to stop e-mailing or texting, but I think everybody realizes there is something special about getting a handwritten letter.” “Generally as a society of course we’re moving away from paper and everything is going digital,” added Aaron Jones. “But at the same time that’s happening, there’s a whole counter of people who are writing letters. It means so much more now.” “You’re not going to take out an e-mail three years from now and say, “Oh, remember when this person sent me this e-mail?’” Melissa agreed.

The ﬁrst Publick Observer (which was then the Williamsburg Magazine) was chock full of stories pertinent to life around town during the 1960s. The Publick Observer was published by John Gravely III. The publication’s editor was William Bryant, associate editor Roger Swagler and Thomas Haley was advertising manager. The staff photographer was Thomas Williams. The ofﬁce of the Virginia Gazette was located in Merchants Square. The top story? “Junebugs, Pineapples Enliven Plantation Scene.” It was written by Pete Crow and examined the plethora of junebugs at nearby Berkeley Plantation. The article also covered historical facts about other Route 5 plantations including Evelynton, Sherwood Forest and Shirley Plantation. The front page highlighted Colonial Williamsburg’s Tayler Vrooman, who was a celebrated

Annual Italian Festival this month By Ann M. EÀmetz The Colonial Italian American Organization will hold its annual Italian Festival 11 a.m.6 p.m., Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 11-12 on the grounds of Walsingham Academy on Jamestown Road. Now in its 11th year, the festival allows the organization to raise money for a scholarship program to help area high school seniors in their higher education endeavors. The festival has become one of the more popular events among locals and visitors. The event features two days of entertainment, crafts, artisans, children’s activities and food. Several Virginia wineries take part, allowing participants to taste vintages from across the state. The event features free parking and is held rain or shine.
