Williamsburg abounds with history. That’s what the area is known for, and that’s often what draws people here.

But the more I get to know Williamsburg, the more it becomes clear: Williamsburg is defined by the vibrant community of individuals who make their lives here—passionate, talented, unforgettable people. They are Williamsburg’s heartbeat.

In this issue, you’ll encounter some of the people who define Williamsburg and the events that define October.

As one of the biggest events of the year, An Occasion for the Arts draws thousands to downtown Williamsburg on the first weekend of October. With 143 artists and nearly 30 performances, the festival packs a punch into two days. But its impact on the arts reaches far beyond that weekend thanks to the vision of the festival’s volunteers.

On that same weekend, you can appreciate literary arts during the third annual Williamsburg Book Festival. Author Greg Lilly organized the event to unite book readers with more than 40 authors.

The opening of the Williamsburg Art Gallery on Oct. 1 complements an art-filled weekend. Artist Gulay Berryman has learned a lot throughout years of world travels, and she hopes to bring a piece of that experience to the gallery as its director.

Williamsburg has no shortage of artistic talent, and this becomes audibly obvious at performances by the Williamsburg Symphonia. Read about how the Symphonia’s current season, led by conductor Janna Hymes, is all about emotion.

Howard Hopkins conducts a different kind of operation at his restaurant Food For Thought. Combining a unique atmosphere and diverse menu, Food For Thought captivates foodies from Williamsburg and beyond.

Another captivating find is Country Treasures gift shop, where owner Patricia Wainwright sells crafts and treasures to add warmth to any home.

Country Treasures is one of many small businesses in Williamsburg. Read about the mentors of Williamsburg’s SCORE chapter, who offer advice to several of these small businesses.

When you think of October, Halloween comes to mind. Check out Busch Garden’s Howl-O-Scream for a frightening experience enhanced by three haunted houses new this year.

October is also host to a different holiday, with Yorktown Day on Oct. 19 commemorating the 234th anniversary of the victory at Yorktown. Learn more about how the battle that led to American independence was won.

Speaking of history, Williamsburg Baptist Church has been around since 1828. But under the new leadership of the young Rev. Daniel Willson, the church is beginning to write a new chapter in its history.

This issue offers a sample of all that Williamsburg has to offer throughout October.

Washington’s victory at Yorktown began with a trench carved out by picks and shovels

By Mark St. John Erickson When the British army woke up on the morning of Oct. 7, 1781, one of the most decisive moments in the Siege of Yorktown and the winning of American independence had already come and gone.

American and French troops digging under the cover of darkness through a stormy night had completed a crucial 2,000-yard-long trench that would enable them to bring their superior artillery within range of the British defenses.

Two days later those guns would open fire with the first shots in a lethal bombardment that insured the triumph of the American Revolution.

Barely a week before, Washington and his allied army had marched from Williamsburg, stopping at Endview Plantation as they approached the British defenses along the old Yorktown Road. Taking up 20

the outermost ring of earthworks as their foes pulled back, the American and French troops spent several days sorting out their lines and sizing up the most advantageous positions for their guns before they started digging.

As the Allies prepared to excavate -- and cut down thousands of trees to use in constructing their siege works --the British army under Lord Cornwallis began to slaughter horses that couldn’t be fed and threw their bodies into the York River. But the tide washed them back to the beach, compounding the Crown’s increasingly uncertain position with the stench of hundreds of rotting carcasses.

Not until they hemmed in a mounted British force foraging for badly needed supplies outside Gloucester Point did the Allies begin to dig their first trench paralleling the enemy’s earthworks on the evening of Oct. 6. According to tradition, Washing-

ton marked the importance of the moment with a ceremonial swing of the first pick, followed by wave after wave of soldiers opening up the earth along a 2,000-yard path marked out by the engineers.

In the days that followed, the heavy American and French field guns that began firing on the afternoon of Oct. 9 would prove decisive in forcing Cornwallis to surrender before his stranded army could be relieved.

Equally critical were the bayonet, musket and sword, which enabled the Allies to storm and take the British defenses at Redoubts 9 and 10 -- then push the tail of a second parallel trench some 400 yards closer to the beleaguered defenders of Yorktown.

But it was the pick and shovel that paved the way for the American victory won by the blade and gun.

This is how the first sign of the British surrender looked to Maj. Ebenezer Denny, a Conti-

nental army officer from Pennsylvania who described the Allies’ extension of the second parallel to the newly captured redoubts as “Easy digging; light sandy ground.”

“In the morning, before relief came, had the pleasure of seeing a drummer mount the enemy’s parapet, and beat a parley, and immediately an officer, holding up a white handkerchief, made his appearance outside their works; the drummer accompanied him, beating,” Denny wrote in his journal on Oct. 17.

“Our batteries ceased. An officer from our lines ran and met the other, and tied the handkerchief over his eyes. The drummer sent back, and the British officer conducted to a house in rear of our lines. Colonial Williamsburg brings back 18th century beers

The explosion of breweries opening across the state in recent months might lead one to conclude that Virginians are discovering craft beer-making. The experts at Colonial Williamsburg tell a different story.

“Beer was an everyday beverage in colonial times,” said Frank Clark, master of historic foodways at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

In his research, Clark unearthed 18th century manuals written for brewers and for the general public.

“They describe recipes, how to select hops and water, and how to set up your own brew house,” he said.

Armed with these manuals, Clark developed three 18th century-style beers that are available at Chowning’s Tavern and sold in stores in the historic area. Clark worked with brewmaster Geoff Logan at Alewerks Brewing Co., a Williamsburg brewery that is producing the beers for the foundation.

All of the beers are made with a base of East Kent Golding hops, first introduced in 1790 and still grown in the Kent region of England. But each of the beers is distinctive: s /LD 3TITCH — A classic nutty brown ale with hints of coffee and chocolate. s $EAR /LD -UM — Golden Mum-style ale flavored with cardamom, coriander and grains of paradise; floral, spicy and slightly hot. Originally created in Brunswick, Germany, and brought to England by George III. s 7ETHERBURN S "RISTOL !LE — Light brown ale based on a beer imported from Bristol, England; forerunner to the modern India Pale Ale (I.P.A.) These new additions fit in nicely with Chowning’s Tavern’s recent renovation into an authentic-looking 18th-century ale house. Beer-lovers can compare and contrast their flavors by ordering a flight of all three.

Currently Clark and Logan are developing a fourth beer similar to a porter that will be available sometime this fall.

“We’ve had to use ingredients we don’t normally use,” said Logan. “For the colonial-style porter, we’re getting all the color from molasses and burnt brown sugar. We boil it in a cast-iron pot.”

Clark shared that “porter was very popular in the 18th century and it was often aged in barrels for two years. We’re hoping to make an authentic porter and

have asked the coopers at Colonial Williamsburg to make us some barrels.”

Currently the 18th century beers are only available in the historic area. Alewerks is hoping to ramp up its production so that they eventually will be sold in local supermarkets.

“I’m really happy to have the opportunity to get these old beer styles back in front of the public,” said Clark.

Busch Gardens digs up some new frights for this year's Howl-O-Scream

Robin Cowie is a producer of horror movies. In 1999, his “Blair Witch Project” created a sensation by traumatizing viewers with its depiction of increasingly desperate young filmmakers being stalked by an unseen evil force.

So when Busch Gardens brought him in to work on a new haunted house for this year’s version of Howl-O-Scream, he understood the assignment.

“At the end of the day, my job is to make sure that the people who go through are terrified,” Cowie said in a phone interview earlier this week from the Orlando, Fla., home base of the Busch Gardens and SeaWorld parks.

The parks launched their promotional campaign with a video setting up the back story for Cowie’s “Unearthed: Scarlett’s Revenge.” The Williamsburgarea park will open Howl-O-Scream on Sept. 25.

When the theme park first launched Howl-OScream in 1999, it featured haunted houses and mazes that ranged from family-friendly to mildly spooky. In recent years, the decision was made to ratchet up the fear factor and truly scare the bejeezus out of park guests ranging from teens to seniors.

Lance Mier, special events manager for the Williamsburg park’s entertainment team, said the increasingly scary Howl-O-Scream attractions have been a big hit with guests.

Gulay Berryman: Bringing international experience to a local gallery

Gulay Berryman’s Williamsburg home is a museum of memories.

Intricate model ships from paradise island Mauritius, delicate masks from Venice, a miniature replica of a Baobab tree from Senegal—the decorations remind her of places lived and people met.

In each place, she absorbed. From each person, she learned.

“There’s so much to learn,” she said. “It’s endless.”

“Everything that I have seen during my lifetime ... up to now, I would like to bring a piece of that to the gallery,” she said.

Originally from Turkey, Berryman attended art school in Versailles, France. Her studies were comprehensive, but Berryman chose a focus in oil painting.

She admits she would have loved to pursue sculpture as well, but she found painting more suited to mobility.

With her husband, Clyde, in the U.S. Foreign Service, Berryman moved often. They lived in France,

The first, and main, focus is connecting with the community through art.

“It’s giving back to the community. It’s the most important thing,” she said.

And Berryman hopes to accomplish this by making the gallery space available to local organizations and corporations, in addition to regularly hosting programs, performances and cultural presentations.

“Artists get inspired a lot from music, poetry, literature, theater and all that,” she said.

“We should be surrounded by all that in order to be able to produce and get inspired.

England, Iceland, Senegal, Mauritius and Italy.

Through it all, she painted -- everything from the portrait of a member of Oman’s royal family to the American Embassy Christmas tree in Reykjavik.

With over 60 exhibitions to her name, in nine countries, Berryman’s art speaks for itself. And it speaks to a richness of cultural experiences.

In 2007, the Berrymans settled in Williamsburg.

Berryman quickly jumped into the local art community, including with An Occasion for the Arts and the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center.

She helped start New Town Art Gallery in 2010, and after leaving the gallery in April of this year, Berryman thought she might at least have some time to relax.

But the opportunity to open the Williamsburg Art Gallery arose soon after, and Berryman has since pursued it with vision and passion.

The Gallery on Merchants Square formerly occupied the 4,300-square-foot space. Berryman wanted to see the location continue as a gallery.

“I think we need more galleries in Williamsburg,” she said. “We can offer more … to our community and to our visitors.”

Run by Berryman and her husband, the Williamsburg Art Gallery will display fine art, mostly painting and sculpture, of a wide variety of styles and mediums.

Much of the art will come from regional and local artists, but Berryman also hopes to bring art from elsewhere. The opening exhibit includes Dutch and French artists.

Amid the diversity, Berryman wanted the gallery to promote art reflecting the rich history of the Historic Triangle region, as well as its contemporary beauty.

“It’s the cradle of U.S. history,” Berryman said. “I think that’s very important.”

Her goal is to leave Williamsburg a high-end gallery with state-wide recognition, but the journey has just begun.

An Occasion for the Arts is an occasion for Williamsburg

Forty six years and going strong, An Occasion for the Arts is one of the biggest events in Williamsburg, and it is gaining regional, even national, presence.

“I think arts and the love of arts is a growing theme within our region,” Stuart Honenberger, president of An Occasion for the Arts, said.

But amid the growing renown, the juried art show and music festival is, and will always be, for Williamsburg.

“It’s Williamsburg’s event,” Honenberger said.

“We hope to grow it and make it a great thing for Williamsburg.”

This year, artistic director Leo Charette introduced a five-juror panel process—a change from past years’ singular juror. With a significant increase in applications from last year, Charette and jurors focused on bringing the best art to Williamsburg, while maintaining a diversity and balance among mediums.

“The lifeblood of what makes Occasion special is quality artists,” Honenberger said.

This year, the 143 artists come from 20 states, with a strong presence of Virginia artists. They offer fine art and fine craft, including ceramics, glass, drawing, pastels, prints, jewelry, mixed media, metal, photography, painting, sculpture, wood and more.

“That’s a very important aspect of this is to help people become educated about the artists, the art,” Charette said. “And also begin to feel a desire to collect it, to have it hanging in their home, to enjoy it, to realize that these are works that they’re not going to find anywhere else.”

The festival features nearly 30 music, dance and vocal performances. From puppetry to Celtic music, the performances occur on the Courtyard and City Center Stages.

The popular youth art section has been moved to the South Henry Street mall. This section provides art demonstrations and activities, but it also displays artwork by children from all the area schools in a professional art setting.

Another innovation is the shuttle service, continuously transporting patrons between the auxiliary lot near 105 Visitor Center Dr. and the festival.

A new Passport program provides the opportunity to win $100 gift certificates to purchase exhibited art. To enter the drawing, participants must pick up a passport at any of the three information booths, get it stamped at select locations and return the stamped booklet to an information booth.

It’s a two-day festival, but Honenberger said An Occasion for the Arts desires to have a 365-day impact.

The festival’s primary revenue sources come from

artist booth fees, corporate sponsors, individual donors and grants. From Honenberger down, the festival is volunteer-run, and funds are poured straight back into the festival. Extra revenue is used to promote arts within the community.

This year, An Occasion for the Arts established an endowment through the Williamsburg Community Foundation. Through a grant process, the endowment will provide funds to promote the arts in Williamsburg.

Charette also has several ideas for increasing the festival’s tangible yearround impact: “Here we have all this incredible talent coming to Williamsburg—how can we maximize their time?” he said.

Charette’s job involves cultivating relationships with the artists. He said an important facet of the festival’s impact is such relationships.

“A lot of it is building an artist presence in the community,” he said.

“And that really occurs all year long.”

A season of emotional sensation from the Williamsburg Symphonia

By Josh Reyes The Williamsburg Symphonia’s 2015-2016 program was built around one main factor – emotion.

The orchestra’s conductor and music director Janna Hymes said she hoped to create an emotional sensation for audiences through the pieces she selected for the group to play.

The group plans to play works by 14 different composers this season, covering centuries of work and numerous genres and tones. The season began Sep. 14 and ends April 2016.

Over that period of seven months, the orchestra will play five programs, two pops concerts and a side-by-side performance with Williamsburg Youth Orchestras. The orchestra will also play in the Summer of Freedom Music Festival in July and August of 2016.

Benefitting the emotionally driven repertoire is an overall improvement of the Symphonia, Hymes said.

“We’re at a new level and playing better than ever,” she said.

The orchestra received new recognition recently, including being asked by the city to play in the Summer of Freedom Music Festival and being invited to play in the Bermuda festival in February 2016.

The orchestra’s first performances were on Sep. 14 and 15. The concert featured Antonin Dvorak’s Symphonic Variations – a piece familiar to the orchestra – and Johannes Brahms’s 4th Symphony in E Minor – a piece they had never played before.

The group’s October concerts bring in violinist Anne Akiko Myers, who will solo for Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto.

“She’s played it everywhere, and she’s fantastic” Hymes said. “The music is intense and romantic and lush and jarring.”

Myers will perform with the Symphonia on Oct. 19 and 20.

To provide emotional variation for the October concerts, Hymes also decided to play Beethoven’s 4th – which she called a happy piece.

The Symphonia’s final program of the season, which will be performed on April 18 and 19, will lean on modernity and feature three American composers and pieces of three different genres.

The repertoire consists of The Chairman Dances by minimalist composer John Adams, Symphony no. 3 in C minor by classical composer Florence Price and Concerto for Violin and Mandolin by Jeff Midkiff, a bluegrass mandolinist and fiddle player. All three pieces were composed within the last 80 years.

Midkiff, a native Virginian, will play the mandolin solo in his own piece, along with Akemi Takayama soloing on violin.

The Symphonia’s five programs of the 2015-2016 season will be performed at Kimball Theatre, located on 424 W. Duke of Gloucester St., Williamsburg.

The Williamsburg Book Festival: A place for writers and readers alike

Bookworms will get a chance to mix it up with local authors in early October, as the third annual Williamsburg Book Festival takes place.

The event, scheduled for Oct. 3, will showcase more than 40 authors, more than half from the Williamsburg area. The event is being organized by Greg Lilly, 52, the author of several books including “Under a Copper Moon.” This is the third year the event has taken place.

“I started it because as an author I’ve been to several book fairs and attended exhibits across the state,” Lilly said. “I thought as many authors as we have in the area, there should be something going on here.”

Last year more than 300 people attended the event, and Lilly hopes the event will expand even further this year.

As Lilly sees it, Williamsburg is a town for readers.

“The college helps,” Lilly said, referring to The College of William and Mary. “It pulls in people that love to read, love to write. There’s so much history and that is a big part of it.”

“There are a lot of people who write historical novels, or non-fiction … a lot of military books that come through here,” Lilly said. “We want to pull the readers in so they can meet these authors, not just the ones on the New York Times Bestseller list.”

The event this year will take place at Bruton Parish’s Lewis Hall, located at 331 W. Duke of Gloucester Street, Williamsburg, Va. It takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Williamsburg SCORE:

Small business mentorship with a big impact

They come from a variety of backgrounds and careers. Finance, real estate, marketing, sales, manufacturing, defense, consulting, distribution—you name it.

What unites them is the desire to help.

Since October 1985, Williamsburg’s SCORE chapter has provided free, face-to-face mentoring to those wanting to start or expand a small business.

SCORE is a congressionally chartered 501(c)(3) organization with 11,000 volunteers across the country. Though SCORE originally stood for the Senior Corp of Retired Executives, today’s volunteers include active and retired business men and women.

The Williamsburg chapter is one of 10 throughout Virginia and one of 310 nationwide.

It’s a smaller chapter, with 19 certified mentors.

Still, the Williamsburg chapter makes a big difference.

From Hampton to Richmond, North Carolina to the Northern Neck, the 19 mentors mainly provide personal, face-to-face counseling. But they also lead free business-related workshops, conduct tailored sessions for non-profit organizations and support the “Boots to Business” program for military veterans.

For 2013-2014, the chapter logged 536 face-toface and follow-up mentoring sessions. For 2014-2015, through July, 220 sessions had been logged so far.

But statistics can’t encapsulate the time and effort devoted by the mentors, all of whom are volunteers.

They do it because they love it. “To see people start from an idea and bring it to complete fruition to an operating business,” Sal Sotis, vice chair of the Williamsburg chapter, said—that’s the reward.

Even more, “It’s a relationship,” Rick Fisher, chapter administrator, said.

The counseling process is ongoing, continuing as long as clients seek help. Often, mentors and clients develop friendships.

“It’s fascinating people,” Dean Risseeuw, chapter chair, said, “which is what keeps me in SCORE.” It’s people like Katherine Reynolds, who started a mobile dental service for seniors unable to travel to the dentist. In 2014, Smiles to You won SCORE’s national Small Business with Outstanding Citizenship award.

That same year, Williamsburg SCORE was named Chapter of the Year in the Virginia District.

The mentors go above and beyond to help clients, said Karen Riordan, president and CEO of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance, which partners with Williamsburg SCORE. “It’s just conveying the experience from the years of being in business that most of us have been in,” Sotis said. “And the hardships to become successful.”

The mentors make Williamsburg SCORE what it is. They’re good at what they do, but they’re also good people.

“All these mentors are thoroughly engaged in the community in a number of different ways,” Risseeuw said. “That’s all part of the strength of the group.”

Customers feel at home in Country Treasures %\ $GULHQQH 0D\À HOG

Patricia Wainwright’s childhood home in Rocky Mount, Va., was filled with country treasures.

She remembers eating butter hand-churned by her aunt. She can still see her grandmother quilting in a room through an open door at the top of the stairs. Her favorite toy was a Raggedy Ann doll.

Now she has dozens of Raggedy Ann dolls and a store filled with nostalgic crafts at her Williamsburg shop, Country Treasures.

“I’ve always wanted people to have a chance to find things from their past to remind them of happy memories,” Wainwright said. “Country Treasures is finding something from your past that might still be a treasure in your heart.”

The small shop is brimming with knickknacks set cutely atop handmade furniture purchased from an Amish farm in Lancaster, Pa. A sign that says “If you didn’t know already… I love you ... A lot” hangs among other welcoming messages on the walls. A corner of the room is dedicated to Raggedy Ann and the old crew.

Seasons are big here. In October customers will find creepy-cute

ghosts, wry trees covered in smiling Jack-o’lanterns and jugs of “Spider Cider.” An annual sale in November offers discounts on all items -- then it’s Christmastime, which is a magical season in the store, Wainwright said.

Most everything costs between $10 and $100. Some of the items are handmade in Hampton Roads.

Others are ordered from catalogues.

All of them are treasures, said employee Carolyn Greene, adding that she often spends her paycheck in the store.

“Treasure is that thing you cannot find everywhere,” Greene said. “When you find it, it becomes a treasure to you, something you cherish, something that makes that spot in your house pop with warmth.”

Country Treasures makes shopper Carrie Kelley, 34, feel like she’s back in her mother’s home.

Now Kelley has three children of her own, and a husband whose Navy job keeps the family on the move. She said it’s hard to decorate when home isn’t a permanent place.

“I try to give my kids a home even though we move around,” Kelley said. “I’m not a decorator, but being in here makes me feel like I could be.”

Writing a new chapter at Williamsburg Baptist Church

For the past 15 years, Rev. Daniel Willson has been on a spiritual journey. It’s an earnest, seeking journey that, for the 34-year-old, is far from over.

And the most recent leg includes Williamsburg Baptist Church, where Willson started as pastor in May. “I perceive that he is going to take us on something of that same journey,” said Bob Kidd, a lay leader at the church.

Even before the journey began, Willson’s life was rooted in religion. His father was the son of an American missionary and his mother the daughter of a Brazilian pastor. Willson grew up in Southern California, near the church his paternal grandfather pastored.

The Christianity Willson knew, and would follow until college, was strongly conservative and fundamentalist.

Upon entering college at Pensacola Christian, Willson began to ask questions, exploring other areas of thought. His views began shifting both socially and theologically. He would later attend Fuller Theological Seminary, where he said his doubts were entertained.

“I started to realize that doubt is really a servant of faith,” he said. “It keeps faith from becoming a glorified kind of gullibility.”

After graduating from Fuller with a Master of Divinity, Willson continued asking questions and seeking answers at Duke University, where he obtained a Master of Theology in New Testament Studies. He served as associate pastor of a church in Martinsville, Va. for a time.

“It’s been about 15 years of studying and trying not to jettison what I believed, but to hold it up to scrutiny,” Willson said. “And ultimately that spiritual journey has brought me to where I am today.”

Today, Willson’s theology is progressive, while still rooted in Scripture. He is passionate about exploring the relationship of the Gospel to matters such as social justice, the environment, poverty, race, inclusion. Willson desires to help those in need, to enact change.

This led Willson, his wife and four children, to Williamsburg Baptist Church, a place interested in exploring change. continued on page 63

“They’re very energetic, and very open to writing a new chapter in this church’s history,” Willson said.

Williamsburg Baptist Church was established in 1828, and Willson is the 30th pastor. He admitted to taking a selfie with the congregation on his first Sunday. But Willson is working to keep the church current in more than just technological ways.

“Churches need to be learning communities,” he said. “And we need to continue in lock step with the discussions that are going on around us.”

Willson’s immediate goal has been to listen, to the congregation and the community.

Within the community, Willson has begun forming connections, meeting with organizations such as United Way, the NAACP and All Together as well as different facets of The College of William and Mary.

“I think he’s going to be a much more vital part of the community,” Kidd said.

Within the church, Willson has presented his understanding of the Bible, laying a foundation for future instruction.

“I think through that will come an awareness of new areas of thought,” Kidd said. “New understanding of what it is to live the Christian life.”

Willson can’t predict what’s next for the church. But, “Whatever we do, I hope that it will look like faithfulness in a way that only we can do it,” he said.

“I do hope that it will look like love, both within our congregation and around our community.”

Food For Thought: A recipe for success

Start with a positive atmosphere. Stir in an eclectic menu. Add a dash of strong customer service.

These are the essential ingredients of Food For Thought restaurant on Richmond Road.

“Just like a food recipe, a successful business recipe has key ingredients,” owner Howard Hopkins said. “You alter the proportions, and you may get a totally different product.”

The current proportions seem just right, as tourists and locals often pack the restaurant to its brim.

With a background in the chain restaurant industry, Hopkins has worked in every aspect of the business, from cooking to waiting tables.

The Food For Thought recipe began to formulate 64

following his move to Williamsburg in 2001. Frustrated by the “trash” on TV, the people put on pedestals by contemporary culture, Hopkins came up with the concept.

“This concept is essentially devoted to the people that have made the world and country what it is today — the scientists, social leaders and business people,” he said.

Inspirational quotes line the walls, from leaders and innovators like Margaret Thatcher, Benjamin Franklin and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Framed biographical pictures of greats such as the Wright Brothers, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison add to the décor.

Each of the quotes, specifically selected by Hopkins, has inspired him throughout his life. He hopes

they inspire everyone who walks through the restaurant’s doors.

“I think if you read the quotes on the walls, and you look at the people on the walls, it’s inspirational in a way,” Hopkins said.

“And it makes the dining experience a more positive experience.”

To enhance the experience, on each table rests a container of discussion cards—Mind Trap, Judge For Yourself and Food for Talk cards—to prompt conversation among those dining.

The menu varies as widely as the quotes and leaders on the walls, from classic American dishes like pot roast and meat loaf to international dishes such as Pad Thai and Jamaican jerk chicken.

“Food should be exciting and interesting,” Hopkins said.

Restaurant-goers seem to agree, as the most popular dishes are pot roast and Pad Thai.

The food is fresh, prepared inhouse, and the restaurant caters to several preferences, with glutenfree and vegetarian options.

Originally, Hopkins wanted to create a chain of restaurants.

Like a chain, Food For Thought is efficient and systematized. But the restaurant emphasizes personalized customer service above all else.

The entire staff, Hopkins included works to make sure customers are satisfied. They talk with customers and, mostly, they care.

Hopkins’ favorite quote reads, “A true judge of a man’s character is how he treats someone that can neither help him nor hurt him.”

“I think, in the end, being kind and being a good person is the goal everybody should have,” Hopkins said.

Despite the restaurant’s success, Hopkins’ initial ambition to expand the business has taken a backseat to a different ambition— being a good father to his young children, Sam and Jake, and husband to his wife, Marika.

He also wants the restaurant to maintain the quality of food and service allowed by its current size.

And it’s the little things that are most rewarding. Seeing families interacting over discussion cards, getting to know the regular customers, hearing that people walk away inspired by the atmosphere, “That’s more important than the food,” Hopkins said.
