A touch of class Classic Consignments in the Village Shops at Kingsmill features items from more than 200 active consignors. Visitors to the store will find gently used, high quality, furniture, lamps, carpets, artwork and other unique and interesting items to furnish a home. The shop opened in March 2009 and has enjoyed steady growth in clientele. People who come to the store love the “thrill of the hunt” and the ability to find high-quality items at reasonable prices. The store is owned by Renee Graves and Michele Olesko. They work diligently to keep the inventory ever-changing. Their goal is to provide items that make it fun to decorate a room or an entire home.

“The best part of our job is that it doesn’t feel like a job,” Olesko said. “We love what we do. We love the people that come in to our store and we love to decorate. Renee’s mother always told her that if you love what you do, it isn’t work and that is so true. We can’t wait to get to the shop every day.” The boutique-style showroom is an ideal place to find an unexpected treasure. The story offers new arrivals daily. Classic Consignments now carries Polish pottery. As the holidays approach, the duo will try to carry more items that may make ideal holiday gifts. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m.,Monday-Saturday. Positive results The decision for Discover Teas to advertise with the Williamsburg Magazine was an easy one! Knowing that our ad would be widely seen by the local market as well as visitors, it just made sense. Budgeting for only one print ad our first quarter, we needed the biggest bang for our buck. And we got it! Our Grand Opening was a huge success, and we continue to see a steady flow of residents and visitors walk through our doors ready to Discover Teas. -Chris Farishon & Kenneth Roberts of Discover Teas

October features peak autumn color from trees and bushes. The cooler temperatures are responsible for lovely displays of gold, orange and red throughout the area. The Historic Area features a variety of trees that turn vibrant as the evening temperatures dip. A stroll up Duke of Gloucester Street will turn up a variety of beautiful autumn displays.

Among those bedecked in fall splendor are trees located in front of the Colonial Courthouse and at the corner of DOG Street and Palace Green. They make lovely photo opportunities.

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE! Is this your first Colonial Williamsburg visit or your first visit in a long time? Here are sites we recommend you see: Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury (Allow 30 minutes) Armoury Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury reflects the complexity and urgency of mounting a war effort against the world’s most powerful 18th-century nation. The newly reconstructed site features main armoury building, four blacksmith forges and the recently reconstructed kitchen. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (Allow at least an hour) The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum features world-class English and American silver, ceramics, paintings, prints and textiles dating from 1600 to 1830. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to American folk art in the United States. Peyton Randolph House (Allow 45 minutes) Home to one of Virginia’s leading politicians, this was the site of important social and political gatherings. The backyard shows the range of work undertaken by enslaved men and women and their interaction with the white household. R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse (Allow 30 minutes) Guests at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse experience an interpretive tour that reveals the pre-Revolutionary significance of the establishment — a gathering place for the politically connected as well as for the socially ambitious — before concluding with an opportunity to enjoy a sample tasting of period coffeehouse beverages – coffee, tea or chocolate. Courthouse (Allow 20 minutes) County and city courts provided local justice both in civil and criminal cases. Participate in a wide variety of court trials in which lives, liberties and property come into contest. Magazine (Allow 30 minutes) The Magazine, Williamsburg’s arsenal, was the warehouse for gunpowder and firearms belonging to the colony and Commonwealth of Virginia. Printing Office and Bookbindery (Allow 20 minutes) Printed items such as newspapers, political notices and manuals played a key role in the spread of information before and during the Revolution. Silversmith (Allow 30 minutes) Skilled workers at the Golden Ball make jewelry, bowls, coffeepots and other items of precious metals. Wigmaker (Allow 20 minutes) At this shop, guests can watch as accomplished hands style hair and weave wigs from a wide variety of materials. Fall is the time for garden tours in Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City: • “Meet the Gardener” features garden volunteers who answer questions about growing flowers and vegetables in the Revolutionary City. 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 6Oct. 25, Prentis Store. Weather permitting. • “Gardens of Gentility” explores how gardens reflected status and wealth in the 18th century. This escorted walking tour includes the Governor’s Palace and other gardens along Palace Green. 9:30 a. m. on Fridays, Sept. 7-Oct. 5. Weather permitting. • “Through the Garden Gate” focuses on the historic documents and archaeological evidence used in creating the Revolutionary City gardens. 9:30 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 8 - Oct. 6, Printing Office. Weather permitting. • “Tall Treasures” explores and identifies street trees of interest as well as the tree’s characteristics and colonial uses. Weather permitting. 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 10Nov. 12. • “The Garden Tour at Bassett Hall” features a Bassett Hall interpreter who leads guests on a walk in the Rockefeller gardens, sharing stories about the family’s visits to Williamsburg in the spring and fall in the 1930s and ‘40s, and about the flora and fauna they loved to see there. Guests also learn about the creative landscape architect who designed the gardens at Bassett Hall and about the events that unfolded under the “Great Oak.” 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 3-31 and Thursdays, Oct. 4-25, Bassett Hall. Weather permitting. For more information, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center, Greenhow Lumber House Ticket Office or Merchants Square Ticket Office.

Doo-wop and fun Step back in time with the fun musical, “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” being performed by ShowStoppers Productions this month at the Kimball Theatre. It is being directed by Jeffrey Nicoloff and will feature performers Carey Lent, Christina Westenberger, Kate Abreo and J.J. Rodgers. The show uses pop songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s as a vehicle to tell its story of four high school girls hired to sing for their prom. Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy, rally together to entertain their classmates in four-part harmony. Some of the songs performed include “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” “It’s My Party.” and “It’s In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song.”) The action skips forward about ten years to find the girls still friends and singing together at their reunion. The book by Roger Bean presents a feel-good story which is sure to please people of all ages. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 21. Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc.

Nail Concepts

If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine.

The tenth annual Italian Festival sponsored by Colonial Italian American Organization will be held 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 13-14 at Walsingham Academy on Jamestown Road. The event features wine tasting, food, arts & crafts and entertainment for the whole family. Joe Finelli has been chair of the festival for the past eight years. He said that each year those who plan the festival try to best the previous year. “We strive to improve the quality of each element that together make up the festival,” he said recently. “The goal is to make the entire process an enjoyable experience for every attendee and for all of our vendors.” Each year the festival draws hundreds to the grounds of Walsingham Academy. Proceeds raised support CIAO’s annual scholarship program. Recipients are given a generous scholarship to help them with their college education. “Attendance continues to rise and our ability to support more education related groups keeps the members very committed,” he said. “The great majority of our members are retirees who were raised with, and believe, the idea that a good education is essential to improve one’s lot.” Finelli said the continued success of the festival can be attributable to Walsingham Academy

Where caring is common When you call a house a home, it’s usually because of the people living within its walls. That’s the case at Heritage Commons retirement community, where residents and staff complement each other for a family atmosphere of caring. Ann Bowe, executive director, is among those who have worked at the community since it opened in 2009. “I love the residents,” she said recently. “I love learning about them, their past and what they have to offer us. They are a fun group of people to be around, there is always something for me to learn when I am with them.” Chef Fred Rock is another veteran of the community who brings his expertise and ebullient personality to the cuisine offered. “Chef has been here since Day One and his food is amazing,” Bowe said. “He works with the residents to

find out what their likes and dislikes are so that they can have a wonderful dining experience.” Each month Rock holds a chef’s demonstration where he whips up a delicious recipe for residents to try. If it’s a hit, it gets added to the dining room menu. Regular events having food themes are held including luaus, elegant dining evenings and barbecues. It’s all done to offer fun and diversity to the dining experience. “The residents love him,” Bowe said. “He has a great personality.” Like Bowe, Jody Goush, director of sales and marketing, began her position at Heritage Commons before it was open to residents. She has firsthand knowledge of the building and its amenities. “She has watched the building grow and develop into what it is,” she said. “She knows what was put into

Each staff member’s goal is to help make the resident’s lives as carefree as possible. “It is like a family here,” Bowe said. “The staff genuinely cares about the well being of the people who live here. Let the Celtic games begin Over the past several years the Williamsburg Scottish Festival has enjoyed growth and expansion. It has burgeoned into the Virginia Celtic Gathering and Highland Games. Now in its 35th year, the festival is scheduled Oct.5- 6. A “Friends of the Festival” reception will be held at 6 p.m., Friday Oct. 6 at the Holiday Inn Patriot on Richmond Road. Ceilidh will be held at 8 p.m. Doors open at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6 for the main festival, located at the Rockahock Campground in Lanexa. The goal of the festival is to educate and provide an opportunity for everyone to experience the Celtic culture. “Our recent name change broadens our focus to what is often referred to as the Celtic Nations, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man, Brittany and Galicia,” said Terri A. Woodward, vice president, heritage of the games. Scottish Clans and Celtic Societies will participate. Last year, 30 groups participated and helped those who are searching for Celtic roots. Festival attendees will hear bagpipes throughout the event, can enjoy Celtic beverages and enjoy Celtic music. Several merchandise and food vendors will offer delicious fare and unique gifts and items.

Other activities include an opening ceremony featuring assembled pipe bands, sheep herding demonstrations, clan tug-of-war competitions, and non-competitive children’s highland athletics and special recognition of military attendees. “We have a Celtic kid’s corner where children can complete educational Celtic crafts and participate in interactive song and dance,” Woodward said. In addition, competitive Highland Dance, Highland Athletics, Harp and Regional Scottish Fiddle competitions will be on-going throughout the day and are open for spectators. “We feel very strongly that opportunities to experience the Celtic heritage shared by so very many in our country are slowing slipping away,” Woodward said. “This is our way of offering an opportunity to come out and experience the culture. Our small group of volunteers work all year to bring this to the community.” All tickets are available from website, www.vacelts. org. More information regarding parade field activities, Trad Pub activities and the performing concert bands are also available on the website. –Ann Efimetz
