HERITAGE HUMANE SOCIETY THROUGH THE EYES OF LOUIS, MAX AND ELLIOTT The staff at Heritage Humane Society thought it might be nice for The Virginia Gazette readers to hear from three animals adopted from the shelter. Our names are Max, Louis and Elliott. We have the same wonderful adoptive family, but were adopted from Heritage Humane Society at different times. From our perspective, Heritage Humane Society saved our lives and we hope this letter encourages you to visit the shelter and adopt our friends who are still there. When visiting Heritage Humane Society prepare for a new kind of animal shelter experience. Heritage Humane Society, or the “Society” as patrons call it, prides itself on being a bright, happy and, yes, even fun and educational place to visit. First impressions as you walk in the front door are surprising. You are greeted by adoption counselors who offer a warm welcome. However, it is the clapping and cheering throughout the building that throw you off somewhat. You might even question if you are in fact at the correct place. Almost immediately you realize you are now in the midst of the somewhat quirky and very popular Heritage Humane Society staff. The highly trained and always professional staff stop whatever they are doing and cheer when an adoption is announced. With a reported 1,000 adoptions a year, there is a lot of cheering going on! The staff works hard to find just the right home for each animal. Sadly, while we were visiting the Society, we learned of an alumni friend who passed away. His owners wrote the following: “In December of 1998 your organization allowed our family the honor of adopting an 8-month-old brindle male mixed breed dog. Rascal Langhorne passed away July 2, 2012, due to complications from bloat. Our baby was the most perfect addition to our family for 14 yrs. Till the very end he enjoyed excellent health. He still did the loping happy dance, full-out racing laps in the yard and greeted his mommy every day with his 2 front paws firmly landing on her chest. I just wanted you to know that the dog you entrusted to our care was very loved and well-cared-for. Our family is devastated, but very thankful for the life-changing experience.” Sincerely, Phyllis, Terry, Adam, Austin & Thomas Langhorne The three of us will miss Rascal, but are so happy the staff did such a great job in finding him a loving, permanent home! We think the organization’s property and overall appearance are assets to be proud of. The Society is located at the end of Waller Mill Road in York County on several acres of wooded land, complete with landscaping provided by the Williamsburg Garden Club. On a breezy day you will hear the numerous wind chimes placed around the property. Inside, the organization boasts its “Gallery of Pets” with museum-like signs directing you around the clean and surprisingly nice-smelling viewing areas. In addition, throughout the building you are treated to large pet portraits of “alumni,” compliments of nationally known photographers Monica Sigmon and Michael Taylor, Society adopters themselves. Our pictures are there! We were surprised to learn that the Society has served local residents since the early 1990s and ultimately contracted with James City County, the City of Williamsburg and York County to serve as the state-mandated holding facility for stray animals picked up by Animal Control or surrendered by local citizens. Once the required stray period is completed the animals become the property of the Society and are assessed for adoptability. Because the Society is an “Open Admission” facility, all animal surrenders are accepted regardless of health or behavior. This proves to be a challenge at times, given the program’s maximum adoption and low kill posture. Even so the Society maintains a lower than state average euthanasia rate. The three of us know how hard the staff works to save every animal. It makes us sad, but we also know that sometimes it’s just not possible. We have concluded that the Society is the community solution to unwanted stray and companion animals. It is hard to disagree when you see the number of well-cared-for animals, the number of volunteers working at the facility, and, of course, the number of adopters who ultimately provide the forever homes. The volunteers are amazing. They go through a lot of training, but that is okay. That way they know how best to take care of the animals. Thanks to the Williamsburg Knitting Guild and to Precious Pieces, the three of us always have warm beds to sleep on. We really like the people from the Society Auxiliary too. They came in and walked us, fed us and played with us. We also overheard that they hold all kinds of exciting events to raise money for the day-to-day care of the animals. The animals at the Society know they are so lucky to be there and to have so many people willing to help them. The three of us think they can always use more help and will always welcome new volunteers and members to the Auxiliary! A large part of being the community solution is thanks to the number of community partnerships the Society carefully nurtures. The program works closely with Pilots N Paws, a national flying organization that rescues animals from dire situations as well as helps organizations like the Society transport animals to reputable rescue groups around the country. In addition, the Society has a mutually beneficial partnership with James City County Parks & Recreation. Together, the partners hold pet-friendly educational events at various James City County parks hosting Bark in the Park, Tails on the Trail and Drool in the Pool. Most recently the Society forged a partnership with Busch Gardens. The nationally known group is promoting adoptions at the Society by offering two free days passes with each successful adoption. Pretty neat, if we do say so ourselves. We heard it is not uncommon to see Society animals at various locations around the community accompanied by staff, volunteers and the crowd-favorite dog and cat mascots. The organization is known for its regular community engagement and outreach activities, whether it is the annual animal camps that instruct youngsters about safe and responsible pet ownership or the quarterly “Howl at the Moon” evening events that see participants dressing up in pajamas or other forms of silliness. The ultimate goal of everything the Society does is finding responsible and permanent homes for the animals in their care. It appears the organization is quite successful at that, thanks to a supportive community and a very hard-working staff. Because we were adopted from Heritage Humane Society and want to make sure all of the other animals at the Society find loving, permanent homes just like ours, we will dig into our furry little pockets and match your donations up to $2,500!

Won’t you please consider a donation to Heritage Humane Society today? The organization survives thanks to private donations. Only 10% of the funding received is from local government and grant funding. Your tax deductible donation will go directly to the day-to-day care of the animals.

Our friends are waiting for you!

Love, Louis, Max and Elliot
