During September, greater Williamsburg will celebrate the arts. In keeping with the excitement of new opportunities for creative expression, this month, the Williamsburg Magazine begins implementing some fun changes designed to make reading it even better! That includes a monthly ‘hello’ from me! I welcome comments and feedback and you can always contact me at aefimetz@vagazette.com! We are fortunate to live in an area that is so culturally diverse. There are dozens of organizations ranging from art galleries to performing arts that regulary present programs designed to entertain, educate and deepen appreciation for creativity. As the arts reporter for the Virginia Gazette for the past 24 years, I have seen firsthand the steady growth in all artistic areas. And that is truly good news! People have moved to our area from across the U.S., and many of them bring a wealth of talent which they have shared with our community. During Arts Month, there are literally dozens of chances to be entertained and inspired ranging from musical entertainment at A Touch of Earth to Plein Air at the Williamsburg Winery. Whatever your likes, whatever your passion, take part, enjoy. Attend alone or with friends. But take it in. Experience all our growing artistic community has to offer.

Williamsburg Consort The Williamsburg Consort is the only Adult Symphonic Band Festival in Virginia, chartered in 2002. The yearly consort draws musicians from across the country to rehearse and perform a capping concert, “America Alive.” This year’s concert will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at Warhill High School. Brian P. Worsdale will be guest conductor. Harry Watters will be the trombone soloist and Maggie Worsdale, vocal soloist. Shrimp Feast The Williamsburg Kiwanis Shrimp Feast has become Williamsburg’s signature late summer family event. Over the past 33 years it has grown into a great gathering of community, entertainment and fun. It will be held 4-7 p.m. Saturday Sept. 14 at the 4H Camp. Those who drive up Richmond Road in Lightfoot may pass by the Parker Piano Outlet without knowing that housed within the store is a 6-room gallery of musical instruments and other memorabilia associated with the history of music. The Virginia Musical Museum opened in June and since has been attracting those who are interested in learning more about famous Virginians who have played a part in musical history and to see examples of instruments, keepsakes and items that can’t be seen anywhere else. Owner Buddy Parker and his wife Peggy, have been collecting rare items for more than 40 years. For the past 20, they have been working toward opening a museum to display their finds. That finally came to fruition June
22.The response of who have come to take the tour of the bileveled gallery has been enthusiastic. “The response has been very positive,” Buddy Parker said recently, while providing a tour of the museum. “People go through it and remark that they never knew that all of this was here.” The Parkers opened the Piano and Organ Outlet in 1988. “I remember that because of the 88 keys on the piano,” Peggy Parker said with a laugh. The couple has been selling musical instruments since, but have always had a goal of opening the museum, which is now located in the back section of the store. It features a collection of antique nickelodeons, music boxes, phonographs, pianos, organs and other instruments.

Klinger has mastered the art of “molecular gastronomy,” a chemical transformation of ingredients to give his dishes a distinctive, brilliant taste. “We try to keep the quality consistent, while keeping things different,” Dengs said. “We change the menu completely every eight to ten weeks to provide our customers a new experience. We also change the art along with the food depending on the season.” The location on Center Street in New Town has proved favorable for the restaurant. “This location is perfect. It is in a beautiful location, it has easy parking for our customers, and it attracts just the right customers,” Dengs said. Dengs realizes the collaboration necessary for the winning recipe. “We have a great team, the success is not all from me,” she said. “With our great staff and our head chef being one of the best in the country, it is a team effort.” Art aficionados may take particular interest in the restaurant’s regular “Meet the Artists Night,” which showcases the work of various artists. The tour begins with a room dedicated to several pieces the Parkers have obtained from amusement parks including “Laughing Sal” a large laughing animated piece that was obtained from the collection of Jim Wells of Fairfax. “We thought it would be fun to have an amusement and circus items,” Parker said. “So that is what that section is all about.”
Also included in that room is a brightly painted calliope, a Wurlitzer organ and one of Parker’s favorite items, a French Plerodienque music box. “The reason I like it, other than the rarity, is that we like it’s history,” he said. “It was once owned by James Sprigg, founder of Smithfiled Hams, and was later owned by President James Madison’s fourth generation nephew. So it has a lot of Virginia history associated with it.” Parker has come up with a high-tech way to allow people to hear the instruments playing without having to demonstrate them which could compromise them by constant use. An iPad tour of the museum simultaneously plays on a large-screen TV has been mounted on the wall to give people the chance to hear their sound. Upstairs, the gallery opens up to include a history of recorded

There are also several pieces on display including a tiny harmonica, which was donated to the museum by local resident Buddy Wakefield. “I have been impressed by the people who have donated things to the museum since they found out we were opening it,” Parker said. One of the rarest pieces in the museum is a Joshua Shudi harpsichord which dates to 1770. It is one of the two known to exist. It has been completely restored by Virginian, Louis Dolive. A few rooms are dedicated to Virginia’s famous artists including Wayne Newton, Bruce Hornsby, The Statler Brothers, Pearl Bailey, Polk Miller, The Carter Family, Patsy Cline, Ruth Brown, Ralph Stanley, Gene Vincent, Ella Fitzgerald and Roy Clark. “A lot of people don’t realize how many Virginians played a role in the development of music,” he said. One of the most impressive is the 1978 Clenet Roadster automobile which was willed to Wayne Newton by the late Marvin Gaye. The piece encompasses the Wayne Newton room in the lower level. “There were 250 made and this is number 69,” Parker said. “It is all original except the tires and the battery.” He said Newton contacted him last year about the prospects of buying the car from him. Arts month blooms
in the garden

Arts Month will be celebrated in the Williamsburg Botanical Garden with a plant sale scheduled 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 28. “Art in the Garden” will feature various plants, flowers, bushes and garden-related art work. The theme fits well with the month-long celebration of the arts in the Historic Triangle. “Planning a garden is artistic,” said Karen Jamison, president of the garden’s board. The garden will be in bloom with fall flowers and
those who attend will have choices of various materials to bring home for their landscapes. A visit to the Williamsburg Botanical Garden is an apt way to observe Arts Month. It provides visitors with a quiet respite and is overflowing with colors and textures. There are 15 sections in the garden, all bursting with interesting plants. Sections include the Native Plant Garden, Therapy Garden, Native Grass Garden and the Bulb Garden. Plants are distinguished with small signs. The garden even contains a geocache in the Calcareous Ravine. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where you use a GPS to hide and seek containers with other participants in the activity. One of the focal points is a large butterfly bench located in the center of the garden. It was a gift from the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Jamison said the bench has been a great addition to the garden landscape. “We were quite thrilled about the bench,” she said. The garden is located in Freedom Park at the intersection of Centerville and Longhill Roads. It is open every day, dawn to dusk. For more information, visit www.williamsburgbotanicalgarden.com.
