The Greater Williamsburg area celebrates the arts in September, and you’ll find plenty of activities to expand your mind and enrich your life. Theater performances, art shows and concerts fill the calendar, so take a look at some of the highlights we’ve assembled. Musical events also are a part of activities at Bruton Parish Church, which celebrates the 300th anniversary of its historic building on the Colonial Williamsburg grounds. All year long the church has been marking the occasion with visits by church leaders, special services, lectures and musical events. We’re also sharing fascinating story about the wind tunnel at the former Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Hampton. Much of the technology that powers modern aviation was developed there. If you’re visiting Williamsburg or make your home here, check out some of the small businesses that make up the rich fabric of this community. This month, we feature Willow Grove Primitives which sells custom-made furniture and craft work. Another fun venture would be a visit to Serendipity, which its owners tout as the largest flag shop on the East Coast. We’ve profiled these businesses inside. Finally, man cannot live on flags and collectibles alone. Consider attending the annual Shrimp Feast organized by The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg for an all-you-can-eat affair that supports local charities. If fine dining is your preference, Chef Hans Schadler and his staff will satisfy your culinary cravings at Waypoint Seafood & Grill. 36th Annual Shrimp Feast By David Nicholson
The popular “all-you-can-eat” Shrimp Feast presented by The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg returns on Sept. 12. This 36th annual family outing will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., rain or shine, at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center on the Jamestown riverfront. Last year, the Kiwanians cooked up more than 1,400 pounds of shrimp, according to the website. This year’s menu includes shrimp, hot dogs, hush puppies, baked beans, cole slaw, beverages and beer, plus Williamsburg Winery wines available for purchase. Entertainment will be provided by The Hark. Proceeds benefit the Lackey Clinic and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Virginia Peninsula.
Adult tickets are $27 until Aug. 31, $30 from Sept. 1-11, and $35 at the door. You can order tickets online at williamsburgkiwanis.org.

Now in its fifth year, the monthlong celebration begins around Labor Day weekend and ends in early October with An Occasion for the Arts. Cyclists from around the world will gather in Richmond this month, and an upcoming event in Williamsburg will be part of the festivities. The occasion is the UCI Road World Championship races taking place Sept. 19-27 in the state capitol. As many as 450,000 cyclists and fans are expected to attend. UCI is the Union Cycliste Internationale, the worldwide governing body for cycling. The organization advocates better conditions and safer roads for cycling and partners with host cities to promote sport and everyday cycling. Fourteen races of varying difficulty have been scheduled throughout the Richmond area during the eight-day period. The lineup ranges from Men’s and Women’s Elite trials to more moderate races. “We spent the past few months working with the UCI on finalizing the schedule and tweaking the courses,” said Tim Miller, CEO of the Richmond 2015 Organizing Committee, on the UCI website. “We can’t wait to showcase Richmond to the world and for the
world to experience everything Richmond has to offer.” Over the Sept. 25-27 weekend, Colonial Williamsburg will sponsor the Fondo Cycling Event at the Williamsburg Woodlands, 105 Visitor Center Dr. Cannondale-Garmin pro rider Ted King will be on hand for a cycling weekend that will include craft beer, BBQ and bike riding. Events will begin with a Friday night “Beer, Bikes and BBQ” gathering at Chowning’s Tavern in the historic area. Two scenic rides of 50 and 70 miles will take place on Saturday. “It’s a huge course that goes through James City, York and New Kent counties and the historic area,” said Jessica Hann, CW’s director of enterprise marketing and digital content. Other local events are being organized, she said. Tickets to the barbecue and races are $110. Serendipity flag shop: Keeping customers from Williamsburg and beyond happy By Heather Bridges
A parrot, a gnome and an Easter bunny ride rainbow-hued bikes in the front yard of Serendipity flag shop. These, and the myriad other wind spinners and flags dotting the grass, reveal the whimsy of Serendipity before customers step inside the store—which many do. Pages of a guest book resting on a door-side table display signatures of patrons from California, Ohio and Florida. For the past 14 years, Serendipity has captivated 26

customers from Williamsburg and beyond with its selection of flags, spinners and kites. “It’s like expressing yourself,” said owner Tom Buchinsky. Two house flags and three garden flags decorate his own home. Tom founded Serendipity with his wife Amy after moving to Williamsburg from upstate New York. What began as a gift shop evolved into the flag shop as the Buchinskys noticed a growing interest in decorative flags. Now, Serendipity’s ads read “the largest flag shop on the East Coast.” At least that’s what people tell him, said Tom.
Nearly 300 flags hang from display racks, including all 32 NFL team flags and a selection of NHL flags. The store, though physically small, packs an assortment—garden flags, welcome mats, windsocks, regular and stunt kites, whirligigs and mailbox covers. Tom said specialty shops like Serendipity are often rare. “A lot of people … they’ll purchase their flags anywhere,” he said. “For convenience factor.” Not Serendipity customers. “We have a tremendous amount of repeat customers,” said Tom. Several items are made in the USA using fiberglass frames and fade-resistant fabrics. “They’re going to last,” said Amy. “You’re going to get tired of looking at the design.” The Buchinskys love the designs, though. Amy and Tom, as a former wedding photographer, see each flag as art. That’s part of the fun in running the business, which the Buchinskys run seven days a week, 12 months a year, with the help of a few parttimers. The customers are the rest of the fun. “It’s nice to see the same faces over and over again,” said Amy. “And they’re usually very pleasant and fun to talk to.” Tom, an admitted conversationalist, referenced a 10-year customer who had stopped by earlier that day. He described witnessing families grow and children grow up throughout periodic visits to the shop. One family returns each year, all the way from Sweden, to sign the guest book. Children love the colors bursting within the shop. Adults shop sports flags and stunt kites. Grandparents shop for grandkids. Locals, tourists, even global visitors—Tom couldn’t pinpoint a customer demographic. “There’s all sorts of walks of life,” he said. The recognition, the conversation, is also what draws customers back to Serendipity. Tom and Amy
often stop and drop what they’re doing to find items, answer questions or construct spinners. And the customer service doesn’t stop when the shop closes. With a burgeoning online shop, started by Amy in 2008, Serendipity’s selection is available 24/7. The Buchinskys hope to grow the website, but for now, the shop on Richmond Road is the focus. “It’s good to get new customers, but you got to try to keep them coming back,” said Tom. Bruton Parish Church honors the past and looks to the future in its 300th anniversary year By David Nicholson
around town This year has been a celebratory one for Bruton Parish Church as the congregation and the community mark the 300th anniversary of the church’s historic building on the grounds of Colonial Williamsburg. Special worship services, seminars with visiting scholars, and musical tributes have helped to “walk us through the past, that we might understand the present and move into the future,” according to the church’s website. One of the major events on this month’s calendar will be a parish-wide celebration on Sept. 27. Rather than group all of the events together under one dominant theme, Rector Christopher “Chris” Epperson believes that “the celebration for us is recognition of where we’ve been and where we’re going. There’s also a Rector Epperson recognition that life goes on. “We’ve tried to really consider some of the major transitions in the life of the church and this community,” he said. “The really remarkable thing about our building — by virtue of its longevity — is that it’s been a place where important historical characters have gathered and said their prayers. They came here for strength, solace and movement into the future. That’s what the church is all about.” Visits from church leaders have highlighted this journey. Last October, The Rt. Rev. and Rt. Hon. Richard
Chartres, The Bishop of London, came to the church. Rev. Chartres’ colonial predecessor had jurisdiction over Virginia, so his visit was “a harkening back to our beginnings,” according to the website. The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, former presiding bishop of the church, visited in April. Finally, Rt. Rev. Michael Curry of North Carolina, recently elected Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, will arrive on Dec. 6. The myriad of activities also have included more than a dozen lectures on topics such as colonial and contemporary religious life and practice, the relationship between the College of William & Mary and Bruton Parish, and the impact of the civil rights movement on the church. Commemorative needlepoint kneelers have been stitched by parishioners, an exhibit of important church artifacts is on displayed in the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg; and a new church logo was designed by a Richmond artist. “We’re sort of a public church situated in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg,” said Epperson. “Being a significant historic site, part of our task is to be a public face for the church for those that find their way to us.” Special events in September Sept. 17 — “Reading the Bible across the Anglican Communion: A Twenty-First Century Mandate.” Presented by Professor Ellen Davis, Duke University Divinity School. 7 p.m. reception, 7:30 p.m. program, Lewis Hall. continued on page 53

Turning houses into homes, one craft at a time

The cozy, red-roofed home at 7445 Richmond Road has stood there since 1904. It’s a simple home with a simple history, said Kellee Smalley. Now, that history includes providing a location for Smalley’s home décor and furniture store, Willow Grove Primitives. “I’m thankful that this little house waited for me to come and work my magic,” Smalley said. “Can you tell I like it?” That little house is Smalley’s second home. And its home to any customer who walks in the door. “It’s her dream,” said Joanne Izzo, a neighbor and friend who helps out at the store once a week. 34

“She’s worked hard to get here, but I’m happy that she got here.” The dream took formation when Smalley first learned to sew while growing up in Michigan. About 20 years ago, she began crafting and one day realized she’d love to have a shop to sell her crafts. She worked in banking, selling her crafts on the side. Then four years ago, now relocated in Williamsburg, she quit her job to pursue the dream. She searched for the perfect location. Discovery of the little house on Richmond Road led to months of renovation. She researched wares for the store — furniture makers from Pennsylvania to artists from Williamsburg — and took two months to arrange everything.
Following the store’s soft opening in March, the hard work was evident. Rustic hardwood floors lead customers from room to room, each meticulously decorated and arranged by Smalley. Paintings and pieces of folk art line the walls, handmade crafts and decorative items rest atop reproduction wood furniture. There are items, and prices, for everyone, said Izzo. One element unites the variety — Smalley’s vision of the country primitive style. The style evokes a feeling of comfort, alluding to a simpler time. It’s a time when people happily made do with what they had, said Smalley, and a time closer to when Williamsburg first started.
Time seems to slow upon entering Willow Grove Primitives, and that’s what the primitive style does. “I just love the feel of it, and I want to share that with other people. You know that there was a time when things weren’t so hectic,” Smalley said. Not many area stores offer the primitive style, but Smalley believes people still crave its comfort. That’s what they’ll find at Willow Grove, and Smalley does everything she can to help customers carry that feeling into their own homes. Smalley is sole owner and employee, but the hard work is worth living her dream. And with a developing customer base and a grand opening in August, Willow Grove Primitives is on track for growth. No matter what, Smalley will stay true to her vision of bringing the primitive style back to Williamsburg.

DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum celebrates 30 years during September By David Nicholson
During September, Colonial Williamsburg will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. The month-long focus will feature extra tours, a new exhibition, and special events that will lead up to a gala on Sept. 30. “For three decades, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum has produced an unbroken stream of innovative exhibitions that use the foundation’s remarkable collections to explore the history and culture of our nation,” said Ronald L. Hurst, Colonial Williamsburg’s Vice President for Collections, Conservation, and Museums and its Carlisle H. Humelsine Chief Curator, in a prepared release. “Our thirtieth anniversary is a fitting opportunity to celebrate the institution’s very successful record of achievement in museum exhibitions and education.” Two new guided tours will be offered throughout the month. During “CW Collects,” taking place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, visitors can learn how and why objects have been collected over the years. And during the “Backstory” tour taking place at 10:30 a.m. Fridays, guides will explore the stories behind the objects on display.
Both tours last 45 minutes and are included with museum admission. The museum also offers 30-minute daily tours at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. that focus on the museum’s masterworks. Recognized for having one of the world’s outstanding collections of British silver, the museum will mark the reinstallation of its permanent silver collection with “Silver from Mine to Masterpiece,” an exhibition of about 170 objects which will open Sept. 12. Many objects have never been on view in the galleries and have been acquired since the museum began actively building its American silver collection in 2009. Chef Hans Schadler continues his culinary journey at Waypoint Seafood & Grill

By David Nicholson The word “waypoint” means a stopping place on a journey, and those who dine at Waypoint Seafood & Grill in Williamsburg can count on great hospitality and a memorable meal. For Chef Hans Schadler, who opened the restaurant more than three years ago, Waypoint is the latest venture in a long and rich culinary career. At age 72, he’s grateful for the journey but focused on the future and in helping young chefs excel. 42

This year, he was a finalist for the Hermann G. Rusch Chef’s Achievement Award presented by the American Culinary Federation to chefs who have “advanced the culinary profession and ensured the enrichment of students.” “I like the energy, and I like to be connected to people,” he said. “Whenever I have the opportunity to teach, I do that.” Schadler was well on his way to a promising culinary career before most kids his age had graduated from high school. He grew up in the country outside of Hanau, a town east of Frankfurt, Germany. His father managed an estate-owned farm and his mother was a professional cook. Schadler and his two sisters worked in her restaurant after school. “We went to school from 7 a.m. to noon, then reported to the restaurant,” he said. “We peeled potatoes and cleaned tables … there were lots of catering jobs, too.” Hanau was situated in an industrial region, and Schadler remembers listening to stories from engineers who had traveled to other countries. At first he wanted to pursue a career in mechanical engineering — “Food wasn’t my first choice,” he said. “I was really more inclined to work with machinery.” But the culinary field won out. At age 14, he went to Frankfurt to apprentice for a hotel/restaurant group. During those two years he immersed himself in the different aspects of preparing fine food and running a restaurant. He ventured out and worked at various places, traveling a circuit that included Alpine restaurants in the winter and resorts on Lake Geneva in the summer. In the late 1950s, many German chefs were finding work in other countries such as South Africa and Scandinavia. Through the state culinary union, Schadler landed a job at the Hotel Bristol in Oslo, Norway. “It was a first-class hotel that had a very affluent, solid guest foundation and was the official caterer to the Royal Palace,” he said. “After the first year, I was appointed chef of the grill room.” Oslo was a big shipping center, and many of the sea captains ate at the hotel. One day one of them inquired if he would be interested in working on a cruise ship. Schadler responded with enthusiasm, and at age 17 went to work for the Norwegian Cruise Line. “It was a learning curve, and I wanted to excel,” he said. “I learned some important skills about managing people.”
The ship had 450 passengers and 490 crew members. “The service was phenomenal, and it was all champagne, caviar and foie gras,” he said. At dinner, “the women wore long dresses, and the men were in tuxedoes.” He stayed for 5 1/2 years, making four round-the-world tours and visiting 80 countries, and was promoted to executive chef. He also met his wife on the ship. They now have two daughters. Schadler eventually left the cruise business, and he and his wife purchased a small house outside of Oslo. But before long they were off to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands to work with a friend who owned a small luxury hotel. When that venture collapsed, Schadler was hired by the Caneel Bay Resort on St. John’s, part of the string of RockResorts owned by Laurence Rockefeller. He became corporate chef for Rockefeller’s Caribbean properties and moved to Woodstock, Vt., in 1974 when the company opened the Woodstock Inn & Resort there. Colonial Williamsburg contacted him in 1982. “They were planning for President Reagan’s economic summit in 1983 and asked me to come and look at the Williamsburg Inn,” he said. “We fell in love with it and moved here. We’re still here.” Schadler calls his years at the Inn the “cornerstone of my career. I cooked for 30 presidents and heads of state and got to meet the Queen.” He developed a personal relationship with President and Mrs. Reagan and White House Chef Henry Haller. continued on page 59

Music will be another highlight of this anniversary month in conjunction with the museum’s ongoing exhibition, “Changing Keys: Keyboard Instruments for America, 1700–1830,” that highlights its extensive collection of early English keyboards. Music will be played in the museum galleries while guests are touring. “A Rich and Varied Culture: Music from the Early South” will be performed at 4 p.m. Sept. 26 in the museum’s Hennage Auditorium. The program celebrates the culturally and ethnically diverse musical style of the early South. The trio Henley Fork, made up of musicians Brian Forsman, Barry Trott and Lynn Trott, will perform Southern music from the late 1700s through the 1850s that will feature dance tunes for the fiddle and banjo, and Stephen Foster parlor songs. This event coincides with Smithsonian Museum Free Day, so admission to the museum for this event is free.
The monthlong celebration will culminate in a gala evening beginning at 7 p.m. Sept. 30. Activities include special tours, instrumental music performed in various galleries, and refreshments. An 8:30 p.m. concert in the Hennage Auditorium will feature popular performers from the past 30 years, including Gabe Stone and Stephen Christoff, and will conclude with a jam session. When Haller retired in 1987, the Reagans wanted Schadler to take over. “But it meant uprooting the family, and I didn’t want the glitz and the glory,� he said. “And it would have been a short-lived venture, so my instincts were right.� Schadler eventually left Colonial Williamsburg in 1996 because of a shift in the foundation’s management style and returned to Caneel Bay to help the resort rebuild after a devastating hurricane. He was lured back to the Williamsburg Inn in 2002 and stayed until his retirement in 2008. Those last years included Queen Elizabeth’s visit in 2007 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Jamestown. One of Schadler’s proudest achievements was resurrecting the foundation’s culinary apprenticeship program that’s affiliated with the American Culinary Federation. “It has been a huge asset to the foundation and to the culinarians,� he said. Today, Schadler mentors young chefs through his involvement in Waypoint and the Virginia Chefs Association. Nancy Geddes, former president of the Virginia Chefs Association, said Schadler “inspires through his standards of excellence in culinary mastery, leadership and utter approachability. “He is the cornerstone of the Virginia Chefs Association and through his continuous, active participation has helped create a powerful tool to assist apprentices, young cooks, professional chefs and his community,� said Geddes. “His genuine encouragement, expertise and humor have given shape to the careers of many cooks and chefs.� “If you want to run a good business, you have to stay involved,� he said. “I set myself as an example, and I don’t take anything for granted. I never asked for a raise, but I was

Langley’s wind tunnel helped shape the modern airplane By Mark St. John Erickson
Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory was barely five years old when workmen began driving wooden pilings into the ground off Hampton's rural Back River in late June 1925. So new and few were its buildings back then that -- except for the complex of mostly temporary hangars and barracks erected by the Army Air Service at neighboring Langley Field during World War I -- the surrounding landscape was largely made up of centuries-old farmland. But those connections to the past would begin to fade as a huge steel-framed structure rose up during the summer. By fall, the giant entrance and exit cones of a 166-foot-long wind tunnel would take shape inside its north and south walls, soon to be powered by
the massive forms of two 20-foot-long, 1,000-horsepower diesel submarine engines. More colossal still was the 28-foot-wide, eightbladed fan that pulled air through this pioneering test chamber at 100 mph when it was first switched on in June 1927. Within a remarkably short time, the observations recorded inside its walls would change the shape of airplanes, beginning with the introduction of aerodynamically efficient retractable landing gear. Streamlined engine cowlings came next, not only greatly reducing previously unrecognized drag but also -- to the surprise of aeronautic engineers around the globe -- significantly enhancing cooling. Then there were the landmark tests that pinpointed the leading edge of the wing as the optimal place for airplane engines. “This is why airplanes look the way they do -- and that put Langley on the map,” says retired Langley engineer and historian Joseph R. Chambers, author of the 2014 book, “The Cave of the Winds: The Remarkable Story of the Full-Scale Wind Tunnel.” “Every research center in the world tried to do what Langley had done, but they were already far behind.” Radical proposal Langley’s pioneering tunnel emerged from the lab’s persistent failure to duplicate the results of previous propeller research -- which had been conducted at a 5.5-foot Stanford University wind tunnel using scale models -- with flight tests of full-size propellers. “Large discrepancies” cropped up every time, writes Auburn University historian James R. Hansen in his 1987 book, “Engineer in Charge: A History of the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, 19171958.” And that led Research Director George Lewis of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics -- now NASA -- to propose building a tunnel so big it could test actual fuselages and their engines along with the propellers. continued on next page

At 20 feet in diameter, the planned test section represented a radical leap forward in scale and capability compared to previous tunnels, most of which measured about 5 feet across. “It was four times the size of what Langley had at the time,” Chambers says, “and that meant it could do things that no other tunnel could do. It was the biggest in the world.” Construction on the new tunnel, designed by Langley engineers Max Munk and Elton Miller, began in June 1925 and took two years to complete. Among the hurdles that had to be overcome was the giant new facility’s unprecedented appetite for power. Neither Hampton nor Newport News could provide the kind of electrical current needed to drive the immense 3.5-ton, variable-pitch propeller at the speeds required to create sufficient

flow through the enormous tunnel circuit. “So they came up with the idea of using surplus Navy diesel submarine engines,” Chambers says. High pay-off Coupled together, the big engines used 44 belts to transmit power to the fan, enabling it to revolve at 375 times per minute. Almost from the beginning of the first tests, it produced unusually high pay-off, providing the team led by Fred E. Weick with results that were both revolutionary and surprising. “The PRT demonstrated almost at once that exposed landing gears contributed up to 40 percent of fuselage drag,” write Donald D. Bahls and William R. Corliss in their 1981 book, “Wind Tunnels of NASA.” “People had no comprehension that it was that high,” Chambers adds, “and that set off a whole wave of engineers designing retractable landing gear.” Still more startling was the discovery that the protruding cylinders and cooling fins favored by the engineers of the day produced almost one-third of a fuselage’s drag, resulting in a huge, previously unrecognized penalty in speed. That led to a series of tests in which -- after exploring the effect of numerous different engine cowling designs -- Weick and his team produced a solution that not only reduced drag by a factor of nearly three but also improved cooling. Borrowing a Curtiss Hawk from the Army at Langley Field, the engineers fitted it with Cowling No. 10 and conducted more tests. Its airspeed increased from 118 to 137 mph -- a gain of 16 percent. “They were seeing tremendous improvements in aircraft performance,” Chambers says, “and along the way they stumbled onto things that no one was thinking of when they started.”
That’s what happened during a later series of cowling tests, in which Weick and his team encountered disappointing results after installing their low-drag design on the engines of an early longdistance aircraft called the Fokker Trimotor. Suspecting that the engine housings mounted under the plane’s wings might be causing drag, the engineers conducted 21 tests of different locations above,
below and in-line with the leading edge of the wings. Soon, their data showed that the optimal position was directly in-line and with the propeller fairly well ahead. “That had a huge impact on the design of a lot of notable aircraft,” Chambers says. “It’s why the DC-3 and the B-17 looked the way they did.” continued on next page

Global acclaim Two years after conducting its first tests in the new wind tunnel, Langley won the National Aeronautical Association’s 1929 Collier Trophy for contributions to American aviation. As “The Aeroplane” of London noted that February, the new data emerging from the lab’s propeller research and variable density tunnels was winning worldwide recognition. “The only people who have been able to get at something like accurate results from wind tunnel experiments are the workers at the experimental station at Langley Field, ...” wrote prominent British aeronautical engineer Charles G. Grey, editor of “Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft” in addition to The Aeroplane. More acclaim came that year from Britain’s “Aircraft Engineering” journal, which recognized not just the propeller tunnel but the step-by-step approach that had taken Langley from its first, obsolete yet indispensably instructive tunnel of 1920 to the forefront of aeronautical research in less than a decade. “They were the first to establish, and indeed to visualize, a variable-density tunnel; they have led again with the construction of the 20-foot propeller tunnel; and steps are now being taken to provide a ‘full-scale tunnel’ in which complete aeroplanes up to the 35-foot span can be tested,” the editor noted. “The present-day American position in all branches of aeronautical knowledge can, without doubt, be attributed mainly to this far-seeing policy and expenditure on up-todate laboratory equipment.” See more photos of the wind tunnel at dailypress.com/history.
