ethos INFO - Making Sure Your Data is Secure By K.H. Queen

H

urricanes, fires, viruses, accidental deletions, hardware and software failures happen. Like most savvy business owners, you probably have a system for backing up and recovering lost data. But your system may not work as well as you hope. Ethos Info can perform an independent security and recovery audit and advise you what steps to take to ensure that in the event of a crisis, you can seamlessly get your data back. “People would rather not think about system failure until something bad happens,” Ethos Info owner Marty Campbell says. “Seventy-five percent of people we audit thought they had a good backup strategy but we’ve found out they wouldn’t be able to recover quickly, if at all. We also help people calculate their cost of downtime so they know what they’re risking. It’s pretty staggering—a lot of companies are at risk where they would never be able to get some of their information back.” Campbell founded Ethos Info in 2011. Campbell and key engineer Jon Bentley together offer nearly 50 years of IT experience in the highly specialized field of protecting data. An Ethos Info audit is not a sales pitch. Ethos Info has extensive knowledge of software and hardware, but doesn’t push hardware on clients—so you can be comfortable with the company’s independent recommendations. Many business owners are reluctant to delve into security issues because they’re concerned about cost, says Campbell, who understands and addresses those concerns. Ethos Info recommends good, better and best solutions and even prioritizes what you should do first so you can make an informed decision about how to proceed. The audit also will tell you if your computer system is running at optimal efficiency and productivity for your business needs.

“We customize the audit based on the amount of work that needs to be done,” Campbell says. “If you’re a oneperson shop, we’re not going to charge you like you have five servers. After the audit, we recommend where people can get best value for their dollars. You can get security for your data to make you feel completely confident without spending an arm and a leg. You’ll have the assurance you can get your data back and that you don’t have any glaring vulnerabilities.” Guernsey Tingle Architects found that some improvements came with a low price tag and using equipment already in place. “Many of Marty and Jon’s recommendations involve how we can better utilize what we already have,” financial manager Dawn Hassan says. “By adding memory and upgrading our server virtualization software, we could tap into unused processing power and improve our server’s processing speed by 12-fold. As a financial manager, I really appreciate those budget-friendly solutions.” When you call Ethos Info, Campbell and her team will give you a free initial consultation to learn about your computer system and then will give you a quote for an audit. For the audit, Campbell first provides a complete inventory with serial numbers of your hardware, disc drives, software, virus protection and will store a second copy of the

information in a secure location with Ethos Info, Campbell says. “That’s the first information you need if you have to do any kind of recovery,” she says. Then, you’ll get an analysis of your system’s efficiency and productivity. Campbell will help you see whether you have the right equipment for your company’s work. For example, high capacity disc drives are designed for a different use than high performance drives, which cost three times as much and are five times as expensive to run. “We’ve been to companies that have these huge servers and it’s not possible to use what they’ve paid for,” Campbell says. So if you’re planning any kind of system upgrade, call Ethos Info first. “We want our clients to have all the information they need when they talk to a potential hardware provider,” she says. Next, Ethos Info will perform an exhaustive security risk analysis. “We’ll look at your network vulnerabilities,” she says. “We have been to a business where someone had left a network port wide open and anyone in the parking lot with a smart phone or other wireless device could have been able to get into that system.” Finally, Ethos will look at your backup and determine if the data being saved is complete … or corrupted. For example, if the processor attempts to back up data that is still in transit within the system, the file will be corrupted and unusable, Campbell says. The right software can address those concerns. Another key issue in recovering data is the similarity of the hardware running the recovered data. If your hardware crashes, it may be tough to duplicate that system and therefore, difficult to recover your data. “If you’ve been running a system for years, the ability to duplicate that old hardware can be virtually impossible,” she says. “You’re going to be down day after day while you try to rebuild that old system.” Ethos Info will create a virtual image of your server stored at a remote location so that after a hardware failure

and data loss, you can bring up that virtual clone of your computer and be quickly back in business, Campbell says. Duke Communications chose Ethos Info for two reasons. “First, because we are an information technology business ourselves, we have seen first hand loss of data disasters through the lens of calls to us for help from other businesses,” CEO Duke Diggs says. “We recognize the need for backing up our information system. Secondly, once again, because we are an information technology business ourselves and are therefore more susceptible to the ‘shoemaker with holes in his own shoes’ syndrome (i.e. we might not be rigorous enough in backing up our own data) we thought it prudent to bring in a second pair of eyes to review our inhouse backup procedures.” Ethos Info did find issues. “We were pleasantly surprised, and frankly shocked, by the chinks in our own armor discovered by Marty and Jon,” Diggs says. “We cannot thank them enough for their help in beefing up our own backup procedures.” Don’t wait for a hurricane, virus, blue screen of death or other crisis to cut your productivity. Call Ethos Info and get the confidence that your files are easily recoverable and your business can continue to move forward—no matter what.

Williamsburg’s Coolest Car Wash? No Doubt About it – It’s Mega Auto Spa

W

by Suzanne Douglas

elcome to the most spectacular auto wash in Williamsburg. From the moment you drive into Mega Auto Spa, at 5117 John Tyler Highway just off Route 199, you’ll know that this is not your ordinary car wash. Spacious, modern, and beautifully designed, Mega Auto Spa takes car washing to a new level.

The owner of Mega Auto Spa, Mat Blanchard, explains his vision. “My family and I have lived in the Williamsburg community for 15 years,” he says. “When we decided to get into this business, we were determined to apply the latest thinking to our operation. We spent over a year researching the industry; and believe me, it has changed enormously over the last few years. Today’s equipment is more advanced than anything you can imagine. It is continually evolving to offer safer, greener, and more effective performance. We are now providing that performance to the Williamsburg community at every level of wash.” Clearly, Blanchard’s vision is working. Car owners leaving the facility describe their experience as “amazing”, “incredibly satisfying,” “immaculate”, even “fun.” A touch screen greets you at the entrance of Mega Auto Spa’s fully automated drive-through operation. Team Members are available to help and to answer any questions you might have. The Full Service Wash, a $32 value, includes a basic wash, undercarriage wash, Tri-Foam conditioner, clear-coat sealer wax, spot-free rinse, towel drying by hand, vacuuming, inside-and-outside window cleaning, and a dashboard wipe down – all for only $21! A key business concept for Mega Auto Spa is customer flexibility. There are no fewer than seven options available for exterior or interior/exterior washes, plus two types of monthly passes via the Monthly Wash Club. Clients can upgrade or downgrade whenever

they choose, and can select services ranging from a basic exterior wash, blower dry and spot-free rinse (for only $9) to complete on-premises hand express detailing. There are free self-vacuuming stations available to every single customer, every single day. The “Mega” in Mega Auto Spa stands for the initials of the Blanchard’s four children – Mark, Elizabeth, Gerry and Allain. Two of them, Mark and Allain, work at the spa, and they couldn’t be prouder of their operation. “We worked with the best designers in the business,” says son Allain, “to translate our vision into what you see today.” The heart of Mega Auto Spa is the massive equipment room. An impressive combination of machinery, water processing, and chemistry, it represents the very latest in car washing technology. “In the end, it all comes down to taking full advantage of the new technology we have to offer, having team members who enjoy what they do, and focussing entirely on customer retention,” says Blanchard. “This will make us successful.” Quality of wash is another key concept for the Blanchards. “We know that people love their cars,” says Mat Blanchard, “so we went the extra mile by investing in the best technology to provide a high end wash.” For example, Mega Auto Spa’s cleaning brushes are made from the newest soft touch/ high density neo-glide foam, specially designed to be gentle on cars. Another feature is the spotfree water rinse Mega Auto Spa

uses on each car, which ensures that water not removed during the automated drying process will not leave any water marks. Perhaps most impressive is the water technology provided by Mega Auto Spa. “100% of our wash water is captured and processed through our recycling system, right here on the premises,” explains Blanchard. “The result is not only greener, it is cleaner: 5 particulates per million, cleaner than average tap water! This will be state-ofthe-art equipment for the industry in the years to come, and we have already invested in it.” The Blanchards are determined to keep their facility immaculate, and that is apparent from the moment you drive in. The facility not only smells clean and fresh, but “daily grime and odors from an unkempt car wash can transfer to your car,” explains Blanchard. “We will not let that happen here. We’ve invested in technology that eliminates the unpleasant odors that are present when recycling wash water, and we wash down the drive-through tunnel is washed down every night. This ensures the water cleaning

your car is pristine, leaving your car spotless.” Mega Auto Spa also believes in keeping waiting time to a minimum. Unlike most car washes, where it sometimes seems your car has disappeared into a “black hole”, Mega Auto Spa can get your car in and out in minutes. For longer detailing jobs, customers are invited to sit in a comfortable glassedwalled waiting room, where they can oversee the entire detailing operation. A large-screen TV keeps you and/or your kids company. Mega Auto Spa is open from 8 am – 6:30 pm Monday through Saturday, and from 9 am – 5 pm on Sundays. During Mega Auto Spa’s Grand Opening celebration, from May 1 to May 6, customers will receive $3 off every car wash. Limited coupons will be available for those who purchase interior services. Additionally, clients choosing to become Monthly Wash Club Members will receive a free full-service car wash, good until June 6, 2012. Free giveaways will consist of a free year Premium Pass, a half-year Premium Pass, and six one-month Premium Passes. “We invite everyone to stop by,” says Blanchard. “Give us an opportunity to earn your business - we won’t disappoint you.”

that you don’t have to spend a fortune to look great in clothes. “In a typical wardrobe,” she explains, “we tend to wear the same 20% of our clothing items over and over. This means 80% of our yearly clothing budget goes to waste. Can you imagine how much that amounts to over a lifetime?” Instead, explains Douglas, you need to have a better understanding of what works for you, to maximize the clothes you already have, and only when you’ve identified the gaps in your wardrobe, to do some “smart” shopping. Style Capital provides all of these services, for both men and women. “Men tend to be a bit more shy about giving me a call,” says Douglas, “but goodness, does it ever make a difference in their lives!” Men consult with Douglas about fit, about a new “dating” wardrobe, about getting out of style ruts. “Successful people tend to look successful,” says Douglas. “I show them how to make it easier; how to make sure the professional they are on the inside is projected on the outside.” Sharon Oakley, who owns a farm yet also works during the week, wanted to update her image. “I honestly thought I had nothing to wear,” says Oakley. “Suzanne created over 19 outfits in my own closet, in our very first session! All I had to buy for the season were a few tops. Not only that, she helped me pack for a trip I made to England

this year. Everything I took ended up being perfect.” For businesses, offering an image session or group seminar with Style Capital can be an engaging and rewarding employee bonus. “Because I come from a corporate background,” says Douglas, “I am very familiar with work-based image issues, and can help you address them in a confidential and thoroughly professional way.” Private style or color analysis sessions can also be given as client gifts. Douglas received her professional image certification from Aston & Hayes in London. She is trained in Men’s and Women’s Style, Fit, Color, Corporate Style, Business Etiquette, Wardrobe Editing, Public Speaking, and Personal Shopping. She is a member of the Association for Image Consultants International, and writes frequently on image-related issues. Douglas has even provided training for high school seniors on Image and Personal Branding, in collaboration with Rambo Research and Consulting. If preparing your spring wardrobe is a daunting task; if you can’t face another shopping trip; if money’s an issue but you still need to look great, Style Capital is here to help. How independent is independent? Just ask Randy and Mary Kay Cabell, brand-new owners of one of the Villas. “We just love the privacy of our home,” says Randy Cabell. “I’m a trumpet player, and recently, we formed a musical group called the WindsorMeade Festival Brass! We feel perfectly comfortable inviting our members over to rehearse – no issues at all.” Although they recently moved here from Winchester, Virginia, the Cabells have roots in Williamsburg that go all the way back to 1723. VCR has built an excellent reputation in traditional and foreclosure home sales. “We have a dedicated and experienced staff that make the transaction easier,” Legge says. In the last five years, the company has grown threefold in staffing and even more in listings. No matter what your real estate needs are, Virginia Capital Realty has the tools and expertise to surpass your expectations. Paying attention to buyers’ needs is a critical part of the process. “He listened to everything we said we wanted, and the first property he showed us was the perfect match” first-time homebuyer Samantha Burge says of VCR agent Matt Boothe. “Sometimes he understood us better than we understood ourselves.”

Dorothy spoke of being attracted by the gracious decor of the interior of the building which gives a warm, home-like quality to the public areas. The community includes a large library with fireplace, long, well lit hallways with artwork, clubroom for movies and events, and a spacious residents’ private dining room with a wall of windows for natural light. A resident since September 2010, Bud McFadden came from California to help a sick family member and didn’t want to go back. “I have a good circle of friends here and this is a good atmosphere. There are fun people to talk to and to be with,” he said.

S a m said he was attracted by the full spectrum of amenities for both he and his wife. He enjoys listening to his extensive record collection in his apartment and the flexibility of driving the car around town, but in the event something should happen to him he was concerned. “My wife doesn’t drive, so here she has everything she needs - good food, transportation, and many activities.” Access to transportation was an important consideration for Mary Jane Badowski, a vivacious 92 yearold resident. While the Cohens often take Mary Jane to the library, the bus availability was a factor for her move to Heritage Commons. “I can take the bus to the mall, to the doctors, banks, etc.” She loves to be out and about and signs up for the bus that takes residents to restaurants, plays, and to favorite shopping spots. Bud signs up for the restaurant outings as he describes himself as a “restaurant hound!” Sam pointed out that the location of the community is important to many residents. He reported, “The proximity to the hospital is excellent and we are convenient to doctors, many of whom are located at the hospital.” Heritage Commons is located off the ByPass Road behind the Cracker Barrel. Sam goes often to work on the machines and the treadmill or bike. They all agreed they enjoyed the spacious Fitness Room with modern and senior-friendly equipment. The one factor that all emphatically agreed was the most important consideration was the staff. “The staff here is wonderful,” said Mary Jane. “They bend over backwards to do what you need and give you what you want,” she said. Bud agrees. This community is very well run and the staff is very friendly. “It’s a cracker jack outfit,” he reports. The Cohens added, “The staff is all very people-oriented. They treat us as they would like to be treated. They treat us with respect.” Sam pointed out that the safe and secure environment plus the convenient location is a real benefit. He finds he worries less and has more time for the things that are important. “The day to day living needs are provided,” he said. “There is nothing to worry about. I can relax and enjoy life.” Mary Jane agrees with that sentiment. “It’s a comfort knowing that people who care are looking after me.” Heritage Commons is a premier over 55 independent living community with apartment units. omen who have been through breast cancer surgery know that it isn’t always easy finding beautiful, properly-fitting garments or prostheses in the weeks, months or even years following their treatment. Nancy P. Lewis, certified custom fitter and owner of Victorious Images, intends to change that. Victorious Images, at 6961 Richmond Road in Williamsburg, is a fullservice boutique dedicated to women battling all types of cancer. The store’s mission is to provide the right support and products to enhance cancer survivors’ health, mindset, and self-image.

Lewis had the idea for her boutique while working at Sentara Hospital. “I never realized how prevalent breast cancer is in our community,” Rambo Research and Consulting, LLC she says. “What’s more, I saw how difficult it could be for women to get College Admission, Career & Scholarship Specialists easy access to proper, attractive postwww.ramboresearchandconsulting.com operative wear. In July 2010, therefore, Lewis opened Victorious Images, a full service mastectomy boutique right here in Williamsburg. Voted one of Williamsburg’s best new businesses in 2010 and “Best Kept Secret” by Virginia Gazette readers in 2011, Victorious Images features everything a woman might need for post-mastectomy care: forms and prostheses (Lewis is accredited by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics); beautiful post-operative bras, camisoles and pyjamas; post-chemotherapy hats and scarves; hairpieces and jewelry; and even bathing suits. The store also carries a line of natural skin care products, plus a wide array of cancer support items like t-shirts, bracelets, and magnets. Everything in the store has been carefully thought out to help put clients at ease. The space, sprinkled with lovely Victorian antiques and sofas to lounge on, is peaceful, quiet and soothing. Dressing rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, and clients’ spouses and family members can relax with coffee or tea and a magazine during consultations. Lewis chose the Richmond Road location deliberately: easy to get to and with ample parking, it gives women a convenient yet private place to visit whenever they feel the need.

Perhaps the most unique thing about Lewis’ boutique is the level of care she gives to her clients. Victorious Images prides itself on being fully up-to-date in the latest in prosthetic technology. “Women need to know that prostheses are being continually improved,” advises

Lewis. “Our state-of-the-art product right now is called Bodicool. It’s a lightweight silicone breast form with cooling cushions on the back. The cooling gel absorbs heat from the patient’s body, making it one of the most comfortable products ever.” Even women who aren’t full prosthesis wearers will benefit from a visit to Victorious Images. “Breast cancer is a deeply personal experience,” says Lewis, “and each client has her own special needs. Let’s say your shape isn’t exactly what you had wanted - we can provide adjustments and equalizers to help you look and feel just right.” Currently the boutique is featuring a silky, capsleeve nightgown, in pink or black with lace, that can handle inserts. “It would be hard for anyone not to feel beautiful in this,” says Lewis. One person who has a lot of nice things to say about Lewis and her store is Pat Cafiero, co-founder of the breast cancer support group, Wings. “Many women aren’t even sure what their needs are after their cancer treatment,” says Cafiero. “Not only is Nancy very knowledgeable, she is a very, very caring person as well. She is practically an honorary member of our group! Her products are gorgeous, and the way she measures is so much better than what some of our members were experiencing before. She goes out of her way to make things comfortable for you.” Younger breast cancer patients are also welcomed at Victorious Images. Says Mary Beth Gibson of the Beyond Boobs cancer support group, “We are so grateful for the support Nancy Lewis gives to our group, and the services she provides for our members.” In the near

future, Lewis plans to expand her store to include health and healing products. “We’ll have cookbooks for healthy eating,” she says, “and lots of other natural, health-oriented items. We are all about women’s health – even our colors are pink and teal, the colors for breast and cervical cancer.” If you are a cancer patient, or know of one, Lewis invites you to come in, sit a while, and see what Victorious Images can do for you. You can contact her by phone at 757 476 7335, or by emailing vimages2@ gmail.com. “Bring a book,” says Lewis. “Talk to us, share your good news – everyone is welcome.”

omewhere along the line, people forgot what “natural” tastes like. Time constraints and economic demands mean that many of us have never really tasted all-natural beef or pork, the way nature intended it to be. Now we can. In the heart of Isle of Wight County, about an hour’s drive from the Jamestown Ferry, lies Windhaven Farm, a family farm owned by Farmer Pete Edwards and his wife Marilyn. A farmer for over 40 years, Edwards decided in 2007 to bring his natural form of farming directly to the public. Today, the farm provides fresh, delicious and natural Angus beef and pork directly to consumers, at prices that rival those of retail operations. “People are more concerned than ever before about the source of their food,” says Edwards. “At Windhaven Farm, we have always believed in an all-natural approach to farming. We breed, feed, and raise our animals right here, without using any antibiotics, growth hormones, or animal by-products. Our livestock is free-range, raised on fresh grass and grain. The finished product is unlike anything you may have tasted before.”

Edwards has over 100 brood cows on the farm, and nearly 300 head of Angus Beef cattle. His freerange pigs also enjoy an all-natural diet, again with no hormones or antibiotics. “Very few farms in the area go through the whole cycle, from breeding to feeding to raising,” notes Edwards. “Only a handful of Virginia farms provide a product like ours.” In fact, Windhaven Farm has a vast product list to choose from. Natural Angus Beef products include roasts, hamburger, brisket, steaks, and hot dogs. Their Berkshire FreeRange Pork cuts feature everything from bacon and pork chops to sausage and baby back ribs. You’ll even find pork cracklings and lard soap for sale. “Almost anything you can imagine,” says Edwards, “we can provide. Just give us some advanced notice for our Prime Rib, so that we can have it ready and waiting for you!”

All Windhaven Farms products are processed at a local and fully certified USDA plant, meaning they are healthful and safe. Each cut of meat is packaged individually, then vacuum-sealed and frozen. “Our meat will stay fresh for a very long time – at least six months, and even up to a year,” explains Edwards. Ordering from Windhaven Farm is easy and convenient. Customers who visit the website and place an order via email or phone will find their merchandise already pulled and packed by the time they arrive. Alternatively, they can arrange yearround pickup at various drop-off points established by Windhaven Farms. “Yes, we have a drop-off point in Williamsburg,” Edwards says. “Some people get together in a group and purchase a half or whole cow. Once they’ve tasted it, they always come back for more.” The trend toward locally grown food is growing exponentially. Edwards notes that restaurants are also are taking a more aggressive role in serving locally produced meat and produce. He encourages restaurant owners to visit his website, to find out more about what Windhaven Farm can offer them. At the moment, for example, the farm is currently experimenting with products like prosciutto. “Several restaurants, as well as private customers, wanted to know if we could make it for them,”

he says. “So we decided to give it a try.” Windhaven Farm comprises 1400-1500 acres of prime farmland. Products are sold in a charming former stable that Edwards refurbished himself. Visitors can see where the animals are raised, peek inside the on-site smokehouse (currently home to 18 hams!), meet Thunder, the horse, or play with Maggie, the farm’s Border Collie. Edwards himself is Isle of Wight born and bred. “My wife was raised only a mile away,” he says. “Our kids grew up here. My wife’s parents were farmers, my son is in the business full time, and my two daughters and all our grandkids still pitch right in.” What does Edwards think of the trend toward more natural food products? “We’ve always farmed this way,” he replies. “It is my personal philosophy. We didn’t really have to do anything differently when the trend came along, because we were already on the program.” The farm is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by special appointment. To find out more, go online at the address below, or call or email beef@ windhavennaturalangusbeef.com for more information. “You know, whether you’re a restaurant owner or a family, not many people get to see a farm like this in their lifetime,” says Edwards. “Come out and spend the day, and you’ll see what we mean.”

In recent years, that growth has allowed Capital Carpet to give back to the community by supporting a number of charities including Beyond Boobs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a local children’s Christmas fund, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Skutans says. “It’s important to us as a small business to support local and regional charities,” Skutans says. “We want to give back to the community that has supported us.” Capital Carpet has grown, in part thanks to satisfied customers recommending the company to their friends. “Much of our growth has been based on word of mouth,” Skutans says. “ Satisfied clients are passing our name on to others because of the dedication and training of our staff.”

Before using Capital Carpet, Broady had used another company and wasn’t satisfied. That company’s dry method of cleaning caused stains to come back later. Plus, the other company drastically increased the price and didn’t show up at the agreed upon time, she says.

Gary Cornelius has dogs but doesn’t want his carpets to show it. Cornelius has been calling on Capital Carpet for about four years, at least every six months, to clean the carpets. “We have two terriers and family members who bring dogs to visit,” Cornelius says. “We have had four dogs here at one time.”

“The one that sold me on Capital Carpet was a house I had listed in York County where the carpets were fairly new but there were stains everywhere and the home smelled of litter box,” Mellen says. “All but one

Capital Carpet’s technicians move the furniture and clean thoroughly, getting in all the corners, he says. Technicians are nice and work to make sure he isn’t inconvenienced, says Cornelius, who works from home. The end result is the most important consideration. “We had family over recently and they asked if we had gotten new carpet in the dining room,” Cornelius says. “I told them, ‘No, we just got the carpet cleaned.’ Capital Carpet made the whole room look great.” Technicians also give great advice on how to take care of carpet between cleanings, he says. Overall, “They’re the best,” Cornelius says. “As long as they’re in business, we won’t go anywhere else.”

Broady also called on Capital Carpet a few years ago, back when she still had carpet in her home, to get out bubble bath and pet stains. “Those were pretty hard to get out, but they did it,” Broady says. Capital Carpet has been able to get out tough stains, especially in the restaurant, Broady says. “In the restaurant business, you have a lot of soft drink spills and mud tracked in. They took a filthy stained carpet and made it look new again.”

One dog chewed up an ink pen and Capital Carpet “attacked that stain right away and made it look a lot better,” Cornelius says.
