Memories to Cherish
The engagement ring has been presented. She said, “Yes!” The couple has shared the exciting news. Now what? For many brides, that is a very good question. What happens now? Where do you start? Creating beautiful wedding memories is all part of the wedding planning process. Today, this process encompasses all of the events that happen from the moment the ring is selected to the honeymoon and beyond. Much planning is required to ensure that the ceremony and celebration reflect the personalities of the bride and groom and their love for each other.
Time to Plan Though the planning process may seem overwhelming and intimidating at first, there are options available to help brides-to-be. One option is to hire a wedding planner. A wedding planner can help keep track of all of the arrangements that need to be made before the wedding. After meeting the couple and discussing ideas, budget, traditions, eti-
quette, and style, the planner can then focus on helping the bride and groom choose everything from a church, venue, theme, decorations, color scheme ideas, seating arrangements, flowers, centerpieces, cake, vows, invitations, bride and groom and wedding party attire, photographer, music, and even transportation. Once the ceremony begins, the planner acts as a supervisor, ensuring that all of the hired services, such as caterers, musicians and singers, and decorators, are doing their jobs efficiently. After the wedding, the planner must make certain that the favors have been distributed, the venue has been cleared at the allotted time, and all of the bills handled. In all, a wedding planner can be a huge help for brides on tight or busy schedules, for out-of-town brides, and for brides wanting or needing an extra hand. The more hands-on bride may opt to handle the decisions involved in the wedding planning herself, with the help of websites, books, magazines, and other resources. These

resources can provide couples with an endless variety of options available, thus guaranteeing a truly personalized event. Regardless of the resources chosen, rules of etiquette will also need to be considered as the planning progresses. Websites like www.realsimple.com and www.theknot.com provide valuable information encompassing etiquette and such planning basics as venues, photogra-
phers, and flowers and more intimate details such as bridal gifts, favors, and the honeymoon.
Style/Theme Once the engagement has been announced, there are a number of basic, but very important, issues that need to be addressed. The first might be the style, or theme, of the wedding. Many brides opt for theme-based weddings since a particular theme can serve as a very valuable tool in the planning process. Some themes chosen today include classic, modern, outdoor, vintage, beach, and eco-friendly. Gone are the days of a typical “traditional wedding. With so many options available to brides today, if she can dream it, she can have it. Whatever is meaningful to the couple and represents their tastes and interests can be incorporated into virtually all facets of the wedding plans. A fun way for brides-to-be to visualize different styles and themes of weddings is through the use of inspiration boards. Found on many wedding websites, these boards allow brides to see how others have executed a particular theme or style. They provide wonderful ideas for coordinating such components as the bride and groom’s wedding attire and that of their wedding party, the ceremony and reception locations, food, colors, and gifts.

they will choose a different venue. Venues today can involve anything from churches, country clubs, beaches, and barns to fields, museums, and back yards. The location often plays a very meaningful role in showcasing the couple’s theme, so this aspect is usually a big consideration for couples.
Budget Another important decision-making component is a budget. A wedding budget is absolutely essential when planning a wedding. Paired with a particular theme or style, a budget will aid in determining the wedding date, the locations available to the couple for the ceremony and reception, the number of guests invited, and many other significant aspects deemed an integral part of the wedding. In general, some average percentages for wedding expenses are as follows: ceremony 3%, reception (site, food, drinks, rentals, cake, favors) 48%, attire for bride and groom 10%, rings 3%, flowers 8%, music 8%, photography 12%, transportation 2%, stationery 3%, gifts (bridesmaids and groomsmen, parents, welcome baskets for out-of-town guests) 3%. A bride will want to either purchase a budget planning workbook or copy one off of a wedding website.

When it comes to save-the-dates, a bride is given the perfect opportunity to debut the chosen style or theme to anticipated guests. In the case of a rustic style wedding, perhaps a picture of the couple in casual clothing with a beautiful old barn in the background would be appropriate. If a romantic theme has been chosen, the couple could be pictured in white with roses incorporated. Invitations, programs, thank-you notes, and other stationery can also reflect the couple’s style. Many brides are now turning to the internet to handle their stationery needs. Some popular websites include www.savethedatemagnets.com, www.shutterfly.com, www.weddingpaperdivas.com, and www.nearlyweds.com.

Wedding Jewelry Though the engagement ring may have already been purchased, there are still other pieces of jewelry that need to be considered. The groom’s wedding ring, cufflinks, a gift of jewelry for the new bride, and bridesmaid and groomsmen gifts are just some of the items that can be taken care of at a jewelry store. The Precious Gem in Merchants Square Illusions by Marcus is a wonderful place for a groom to find a stunning engagement ring for his intended and for a bride to find a beautiful wedding band for her husband. Owner Reggie Akdogan creates unique pieces of art and also showcases spectacular collections that are sure to please the bride and groom, attendants, mothers, fathers, and anyone else involved in the wedding. Established in 1980, The Precious Gem can help provide the perfect ring, bracelet, brooch, necklace, or earrings for the special occasion. Drummonds Fine Jewelers in Hampton specializes in custom design pieces that are sure to please
any bride or groom. Any piece of jewelry that can be imagined or drawn can be recreated here. They also focus their expertise on remounting and redesigning old jewelry.
Wedding Attire for the Groom and Groomsmen
While much emphasis is placed on the bride’s wedding attire, there are also many decisions to be made when it comes to the groom’s attire. Most people think tuxedo or suit, but there are many options available. One of the most important factors in determining what will be worn is the style of the wedding. Will it be formal or informal? For a very formal wedding, the groom should probably go all out and wear a tuxedo, tie or bowtie, vest, and cufflinks. Many brides choose to have the vest and tie color complement the bridesmaid dresses. Williamsburg Bridal and Formal is a great place for the groom to find the perfect attire for any formal wedding. For a themed wedding, the groom has many more options available. For instance, white linen pants and shirt could be worn at a beach wedding. Or a handsome velvet jacket could be worn for a

Capturing Those Special Moments There is much to consider when choosing a photographer for the “Big Day”. As each photographer has their own style, couples need to do some research before making their selection. First, the couple should determine their overall style. Do Kim Kiely Photography they like more posed shots or classic portraits? Or is it candids they find the most interesting? Black and white photos or color? Angled shots or more leveled ones? Couples need to check out websites and read reviews. Appointments need to be set up to meet with each photographer.
Kim Kiely of Kim Kiely Photography is a modern wedding and portrait photographer in Williamsburg. “I love capturing the moment not just the picture,” says Kiely. “The moment the groom sees his bride walking down the aisle, it becomes a great memory everyone wants to remember!” Another gifted photographer is Helen Oderisi. Helen’s Place Photography is a talented, energetic team of photographers and designers with a single goal: to provide the ultimate portrait and wedding experience, and the most stunning photographs imagined.
Decadent Desserts One of the sweetest parts of a wedding is undoubtedly the dessert. Who doesn’t look forward to seeing a beautifully decorated wedding cake? And grooms cakes today consist of the groom’s favorite flavors and the option to have any kind of design imaginable. Alice Cooke , owner of CakeAlicious (previously known as Creations From the Heart) prepares beautiful and unique cakes using only the finest ingredients. . After seeing her work, it is obvious that she is a master at what she does. If you can imagine it, Alice can create it. Also popular today are a wider range of desserts. Some couples may decide to offer their favorite desserts instead. These can range from cupcakes and cookies to pies and pastries.

Setting the Mood Nothing quite sets the mood for an event like music. There are so many choices the bride and groom may choose from. Ceremony music is generally a softer kind of music. Soloists, pianists, fife and drums, bagpipes, and harpists are just some of the ways to create a beautiful and meaningful ambiance at both the ceremony and the reception. Local harpist Marian Harding is often asked to play at both. Regionally cited as “Top Harp in Hampton Roads”, her expertise adds a bold touch of elegance to any special event. DJs and bands definitely liven up a reception. Rhythm Squadron Mobile DJ Service of Williamsburg makes the event’s success their top priority and gets guests up and moving on the dance floor. They work with the bride and groom to make sure they know exactly how to help them create an unforgettable experience. Another local favorite known for its energetic disc jockeys and memorable events is
Uptown Music Professional Disc Jockeys of Toano. They tailor each and every event specifically for their clients and adapt quickly to the mood of the crowd. For couples wanting to learn specific dances for their reception, Steve Kirvan of 7 Cities Ballroom in Williamsburg is one of the best instructors in the region. Having taught for over 15 years, Kirvan can help couples become proficient in all kinds of dances – from the waltz, tango, rumba, en raftsm C and salsa to the Cha r te Mas Cha, Foxtrot, Hustle, and Quickstep.
Indulge in the Ultimate As the wedding day draws nearer, brides often decide to pamper themselves and their bridesmaids. Illusions by Marcus in Williamsburg offers brides a wedding package for the entire party that includes hair, makeup, and a private room with a bridal buffet. “When a client looks in the mir-

Gifts When it comes to a wedding, an immediate thought is gifts - gifts the couple will receive and gifts the couples will give. Bridal registries, bridal party gifts, bride and groom’s gifts to each other, and wedding favors must all be taken into consideration. Registering for gifts is usually fun for the bride and groom. The couple can imagine themselves using together the gifts they would like to receive. Some gifts will tend to be more basic, like kitchen gadgets, while others may be coveted wine or champagne glasses. Couples need to carefully consider their lifestyle and take the opportunity to register for items that will enable them to live the life they envision for themselves. Most couples will register at several types of stores. Department stores, kitchen and bath stores, and specialty gift stores are all popular choices today. There are so many choices when it comes to bridal party and groomsmen gifts. Some couples choose gifts that correspond with the style of the wedding, some give their attendants something to wear in the wedding, and others choose gifts that are completely unrelated to any part of the wedding. In essence, the possibilities are endless. Master Craftsmen in Williamsburg has a wonderful selection of items that make great keepsakes from the bride and groom. Well-known for their variety of styles of handmade bracelets, the store also offers necklaces, earrings, charms, frames, plates, key rings, money clips, cufflinks, tie bars, jewel boxes, luggage tags, and more. Many items are available for engraving as well. This is also a perfect place for the bride and groom to find special gifts for each other. Favors for all guests have increased in popularity as well. Couples are giving such personalized items as candy bars, match books, hot sauce, and coffee packets. Coasters, manicure sets, soaps, parasols, bottle stoppers, and bags are just a few more of the things available for giving. Many wedding sites, like www.theknot.com, feature a huge variety of ideas.
Helen’s Place Photography
Transportation One important factor that must be considered is transportation. How will the wedding party get to the church? How will the bride and groom get to the reception? Some couples rent RVs, party buses, or fancy cars to get them where they need to be. When a particular theme is involved, couples may look for a horse-drawn carriage for a special

Fun Facts Tiffany and Jesse, well-known Bruton High School sweethearts were married on the cusp of Hurricane Irene on the interesting date of 9/10/11. After giving her new husband an acoustic guitar right before the ceremony, he was absolutely stunned when he saw that his groom’s cake was an exact replica of the guitar she had given him. It was life-size and sat on a custom built guitar cake stand. Another surprise for the groom and guests surrounded Tiffany’s mermaid-fit, satin and crystal-encrusted gown. It was actually made of two pieces. Right before the removal of the garter, Tiffany secretly told Jesse to rip the bottom of the dress off. So he reached up and unfastened the clasps and pulled. The guests were shocked and delighted. Tiffany and Jesse also wanted their Bridal Party’s personalities to shine on their special day. Each bridesmaid selected their preferred style of dress from the same designer, with same fabric and color. Then each of the seven girls wore their favorite color shoes. Tiffany’s shoes qualified for her "something blue." The pictures were fabulous! To keep the groomsmen happy and involved, they all chose to wear aviator sunglasses. A photo booth seemed to be one of the biggest hits at the wedding. Guests received a strip for themselves and a strip for the wedding scrapbook.

Reception location is a huge factor when planning a wedding. Following a style or theme and keeping in mind the budget will help the bride narrow down her choices. And the Bride Wore… How will you finish that sentence? It certainly calls for a big ending. With so many options available for brides today, it is absolutely essential to cut down the selections. Designer, style, and price range are three factors that will help narrow a bride’s focus. When selections are made and pictures are ready, the bride must then determine if local bridal stores carry what she is looking for. Once the bride has tried on dresses and selected a few possibilities, she may decide to ask her mother or friend to help her make the final decision. Williamsburg Bridal and Formal carries a vast array of beautiful wedding gowns, thus giving brides the opportunity to try on the styles they are interested in. The store also carries an elegant selection of veils, headpieces, shoes, handbags, and jewelry. Once the gown has been
selected, attire for the bridesmaids, mothers, fathers, and the groom and groomsmen can all be taken care of at Williamsburg Bridal and Formal as well. Blush, a Bridal Consignment Boutique in Newport News, is another option for brides-to-be. The boutique offers recent brides the chance to consign their gowns and brides-to-be the opportunity to find a stunning gown at a fraction of the cost. Also available are bridal accessories and wedding party dresses and gowns. Located in Merchants Square, Ocean Palm offers the bride wonderful ways in which to share her creativity. The ever-vibrant fabrics so characteristic of the Lilly Pulitzer collections featured in the store can become the basis for many a casual or traditional wedding. Fun Facts Though living in Chicago, Doug and Tiffany agreed to marry in her home town of Williamsburg. Doug proposed to Tiffany while she was living and working in Hong Kong. She decided she wanted to incorporate Asian influences in the wedding and her invitations reflected this desire. Tiffany let her attendants choose their own dresses for the wedding as long as they were the same color. All were black but were different in styles. Doug’s groom’s cake was created based on his passion for Facebook. A surprise to Doug, a screen shot of his Facebook home page was on the cake, and his status was changed from “engaged” to “married”. The distance/travel theme was integrated into the reception. The tables were named after places the two had traveled together during their courtship. Individual place cards were housed inside silver plated luggage tags, which were given as wedding favors. The ceremony was officiated by Fr. Michael Joly. Fr. Joly is blind but inspired the guests with his musical magnificence on the piano and his self-composed song that he sang. Then completely and unexpectedly he asked to join the band onstage at the reception and the crowd went wild!

Flower Power
Flowers are one of the most photographed details of a wedding so it is important to choose centerpieces and bouquets that will complement the chosen style or theme. In determining flower selection, color, style, and availability all play a large role. Brides-to-be should search through pictures of centerpieces and flowers that range in style from casual and rustic to formal and glamorous. To ensure that centerpieces and bouquets match the wedding color palette, it is often necessary to search by color. Once the bride has an idea of what she wants, she should arrange to meet with several florists. Showing pictures of the desired flowers and centerpieces will help the florists determine if they can provide what is wanted or if they can enhance the bride’s ideas. Morrison’s Flowers and Gifts in Williamsburg has a wedding gallery
brides can use to get ideas and see the beautiful bouquets that can be created. Owner Arlene Aitken Williams takes the time to understand every bride’s vision; she researches and oversees every single detail to ensure perfection. They, like Williamsburg Floral, take care of corsages, boutonnieres, and any other flower needs. Its seven designers, with over 150 years of combined experience, love what they do! They help brides enjoy the process of choosing flowers and are conscious to keep budget in mind. Owner Elgin Morris grows herbs seasonally to use in arrangements, adding unique texture and design. -Kathy Zaun

Fun Facts Emily’s ring from Precious Gem features a stunning sapphire. Originally from England, Emily had fallen in love with Princess Diana’s sapphire wedding ring and had always dreamed of having one. The bridesmaids wore ivory Lilly Pulitzer dresses with a navy and coral fish design from Ocean Palm in Williamsburg. Emily’s gift to them was a navy blue clutch adorned with a gold turtle and matching navy patent sandals. The groom wore a custom suit, and groomsmen wore navy blazers and linen trousers to complement the bridesmaids’ attire. The bride wore silver sparkle flip flops. The couple was married on the lawn overlooking the sound. Just as they were saying their vows, seven pelicans (matching the same number of attendants) flew overhead. A delicious barbeque dinner was served at the Sanderling for the rehearsal dinner. The casual atmosphere promoted immediate interaction among the guests. Gifts to guests were bottles of wine and Lilly Pulitzer wine glasses. The label on each featured a picture of Rob and Emily and the wedding date. We were lucky enough to have so much support from our family and friends, I wish we could relive our Wedding Day a few more times!
