Picturesque setting, fine dining at Café Provençal Café Provençal located on the grounds of the picturesque Williamsburg Winery offers people a chance to experience fine dining in a relaxed and tranquil setting. The superb quality of the food combined with amazing service makes for a truly memorable experience. The restaurant is proudly owned by the Duffeler Family and has enjoyed continued popularity since opening in 2007. Chef Tim Westby-Gibson studies the culinary industry and incorporates his research in the design, creativeness and structure in every dish. He prepares each selection using fresh local and quality ingredients making every main dish the perfect combination. The signature dishes incorporate special meats that are slowly smoked using cured grape vines following the traditional southern France style of cooking. Daily specials reflect creative talent, careful preparations and a masterful presentation. The restaurant can also boast one of the largest Virginia Wine lists in the state and also has a great selection of national and international wine to choose from. Locals who appreciate food and wine, as well as the many visitors who vacation in Williamsburg, have found the fine, fresh cuisine of Café Provençal distinct in its quality and service. A recent visitor to the restaurant raved about the experience they had at Café Provençal. “It exceeded our expectations. I wish we lived closer. We would be here once a month at least to take advantage of the food. And not only was the food wonderful, but the service was attentive yet not intrusive. Highly recommend to city people who weren’t expecting such a great find in Williamsburg.” 4

Another customer called Café Provençal “One of the best kept secrets in Williamsburg.” One couple thought the value was exceptional and the food unparalleled. “The prix-fixe menu was an excellent value, as was the “glass of reserve wine paired with each course” offer. I had the crab bisque, filet mignon, and fudge torte with home-made banana ice cream. My husband had the smoked duck, filet mignon, and the chocolate tiramisu trifle. Everything was delicious, but the filet mignon and banana ice cream were beyond amazing.” The vegetables and herbs used in Chef Westby-Gibson’s recipes are grown on property’s two-acre garden. Everything is made from scratch, including all the

stocks for sauces and soups. New this season is a greenhouse garden tunnel which will allow growing all year long. By the time summer arrives, the garden will coop with other local restaurants to supply fresh vegetables and herbs all year. Wine educator Kevin Zraly has said that Virginia is an exciting wine region, producing some amazing wines. The Williamsburg Winery vintages have won international awards with “Decanter Magazine” of London, four years in a row. Come by and see all Café Provençal has to offer. Four generations of excellence The Jefferson offers steaks, seafood and Southern favorites There is something to be said about tradition. The Jefferson Restaurant on Richmond Road is part of the area’s long history. The family-owned restaurant recently celebrated its 55th anniversary, no small feat in an area now dominated by fast-food choices. There’s been a proliferation of chain restaurants up and down Richmond Road over the past couple of decades. However, the owners of the Jefferson have continued offering top-quality service, reasonable prices and excellent food that keeps locals and visitors coming back to their restaurant. The sense of family is evident in restaurant’s wait and support staff. Some servers have worked at the Jefferson for 20 years. That makes those who return able to find the same faces year after year. And that makes a difference. People still flock to the Jefferson for the distinctive Southern favorites they find on the diverse menu. Some of the most popular items to choose from are peanut soup, baked Virginia ham and crabcakes, spare ribs, stuffed pork chops and fried chicken. There’s a variety of other delicious fare to sample as well including hand-cut

steaks, prime rib, fresh local seafood, and select Italian dishes. The Jefferson is open each evening for dinner. If you walk up Richmond Road, you will traverse Jefferson Walk, which is a cluster of distinctive shops and businesses that can offer everything from a Williamsburg souvenir to a rare book. The Jefferson Walk features Bertram & Williams Books & Fine Art, Souvenirs N’ Stuff, Jackson Hewitt, Groovy Gecko’s Comics and Games, Tony’s Topper and Action Electronics. If you stop by one of the establishments, you may be pleasantly surprised at what you may find. The walk leads to Mama Steve’s House of Pancakes, which is located at 1509 Richmond Road. Those who have a big morning or lunchtime appetite will find something to please their palate on the menu. Mama Steve’s features a Dutch Colonial dining room where a variety of pancakes, omelets, and other breakfast fare, such as creamed chipped beef, corned beef hash, applewood smoked bacon and plantation platters are offered. At lunch, there is a diverse menu featuring a variety of burgers, sandwiches and salads. The hours are 7 a.m.-2 p.m daily. Photos by Ann Efimetz

Mouth-watering selections, great service at Francesco’s Sometimes the best things are off the beaten path. If you’ve ever tried Francesco’s Restaurante Italiano, you know that it’s worth searching out. The restaurant is located in the Williamsburg Pavilion Shops on Richmond Road in Lightfoot near the Pottery. The outside appearance may be deceiving. Who would dream that inside, smells of fresh bread baking in the ovens, homemade sauces simmering on stoves, and succulent meats and fish would lure back loyal locals time and time again? Chef Francesco Fiorello started his career in food back when he was eight,

living in Palermo Sicily. He watched the chefs in the kitchen where his mom washed dishes. Awed by their talents and skills, it wasn’t long before Francesco learned the skillful cooking techniques that have served him well today. Having worked in many Italian restaurants in Italy and the United States, Francesco, along with his wife, Jeniffer, decided to start their own restaurant so Francesco could fully put his artistic cooking skills and natural talents to work. Francesco’s opened up in 2008, quickly earning first place in Best New Restaurant and second place as Best New Business. Seven days a week, Francesco can be found in his kitchen making his own dough from scratch and creating over ten

featured specials a day, on top of his proven menu favorites. “ Mouth-watering pizza, pasta, veal, seafood, and chicken dishes can be found on the menu and in features each day. Folks on Weight Watchers love Francesco’s cacciatore sauces and he will also work with any dietary limitations a customer may have. Whether you come in for a more casual lunch or for an elegantly casual meal, you are sure to be happy with the service. Francesco’s is also available for catering or pickup, and will work with you to prepare the perfect menu for your party or function. Visit Francesco’s. You’re sure to become a loyal local, too.

sprinkle of bacon, or a local honey roasted pear salad over greens topped with crumbled blue cheese. An extensive international wine list is designed to complement your meal. And during the lovely warmer months in Williamsburg, you can visit the new Bier Garten on the patio where you can sample Spaten Lager, Spaten Dunkel and Paulaner Hefe Weizen on tap. Those who have eaten at the restaurant have been enthusiastic in their praise. A recent visitor to www.tripadvisor.com wrote, “I have been several times to the Bavarian Garden and I simply love it. The first time I dined there I was with a group of old friends, for all of us it was our first time, it was interesting speaking

with the staff which is from all over the world...the portions are very fair and satisfying, specially the goulash. It is hard to make it to the dessert.” The restaurant also offers catering for your special event. Bavarian Garden can create German style goodies for you that will delight your guests and make your occasion truly memorable. The staff of the restaurant hopes that you will stay a while, relax and make an evening of it. “Come as a customer, leave as a friend.”

How to make dining out fresh, healthy and affordable for families There are times when pulling together a meal at home isn’t in the cards; and finding time to cook a meal and gather everyone around the table is just too hard. The easiest time-saving solution is going out to eat, but that too can seem daunting when looking for a family meal that has both good nutrition and comes at a reasonable cost. Not to fear, menus and prices are changing. Greater emphasis has been placed on eating fresh, and, when possible, local foods in recent years. And, as the demand for healthier menu options has grown across a wider audience, more restaurants at a variety of price points have responded by offering foods made with fresh ingredients, at prices that won’t hurt the family budget. This trend also means that consumers have to be savvy about where - and what - they’re eating. What’s presented as healthy isn’t always the best choice. The best defense here is a good offense. Becoming informed about the dishes you’re likely to pick and the restaurants you frequently visit will allow you to make the right choices. There are a few key things to look for when taking the family out for a meal: • Fresh ingredients. These can be particularly hard to come by in a restaurant setting, so it’s good to find restaurants that have a mission to serve fresh foods. Some restaurants make the effort to ensure that the food they offer on their salad bar and the ingredients in their freshly prepared foods come straight from the farm to the restaurant kitchen, with

as little transit time as possible in between. That means that the food not only tastes better, it’s also in optimal condition for healthy eating. • A wide variety of options. Families have to cater to a lot of very different taste preferences, which can make dining out a challenge. And we all know it can be a challenge to get kids to choose healthy foods over junk food. By going out together to a restaurant that has a buffet format coupled with freshly-made wholesome foods, you’ll be able to let everyone pick out what’s to their taste with the peace of mind that they’re eating well. • Know nutrition. Make it a point to talk to your family about healthy ingredients and how they make a difference in their lives. It’s also useful to explain calories - how many go into a healthy diet, what’s too little and what’s too much -

and give kids examples of how many calories are in a variety of prepared foods. Some restaurant websites make it easy to find out exactly what the nutritional values are in each item they serve. Having a realistic view of what goes into the food you eat plays a big role in making healthy choices when eating out. By knowing what to look for, it’ easier to make smart choices at restaurants that are wallet-friendly, disproving the myth that it costs a lot to eat the healthiest foods. And when you find a place that meets the requirements of healthy, affordable and fresh, spread the word to friends. Whether you go out on a multi-family lunch date or give restaurant gift cards, you'll be sharing smart ways to stay healthy with your family and friends. –ARA Content

Experience the many flavors of Kingsmill Resort Dining at Kingsmill Resort offers a wonderful option for locals to escape the everyday and experience something different in a secluded and natural environment along the James River. It’s also a good option for tourists who are not staying at the resort and looking for something uniquely different from the rest of the Williamsburg offerings. The resort includes several restaurants, Eagles, Bray’s Bistro, Marina Bar & Grille, Regatta’s Café and The Mill. Michael Shannon, director of restaurants, directs all restaurants on-site. The resort’s natural setting with stunning James River views is the ideal backdrop to an exceptional dining experience. Whether you desire the authentic steak and chophouse offerings at Eagles, the resort’s signature Sunday brunch or Friday night seafood buffet at Bray’s Bistro, casual outdoor dining on the river at the Marina Bar & Grille, the taste of

real wood fired pizzas and Italian fare at Regatta’s Cafe, or a specialty coffee and fresh-made dessert at The Mill, there’s something here to tempt everyone’s appetite. At Kingsmill Resort, everything revolves around the customer. Everyone from the executive chef to dining servers ensure that every dining experience is personally gratifying and delicious. Bray Bistro offers the epitome of sophisticated Southern cuisine. Fresh, seasonal ingredients create a sumptuous meal. From peach tea to po-boys to sweet potato bread pudding, each meal is a new rendition of an old favorite. A team of award-winning culinary masters has developed an array of inventive dishes designed to please the most sophisticated palate. Great pride is taken in presentation with each masterpiece artistically displayed and elegantly served. The Bray Bistro offers a renowned Sunday brunch and Friday night Chesapeake Seafood Buffet—two of the most popular dining experiences at the resort. Marina Bar & Grille - Open seasonally, the Marina Bar & Grille is the per-

fect setting for a casual good time with friends. Guests can sit outdoors along the James River and enjoy light fare for lunch, delicious seafood for dinner and live entertainment. The outdoor fireplace is particularly cozy during cool weather. Eagles –– Is a steak and chophouse featuring Kingsmill’s exclusive beechwood-smoked cooking. The innovative process involves cold-smoking beef, chops, poultry and seafood over Budweiser-bathed beechwood chips to create a signature taste. Regattas’ Cafe – The café features scrumptious pizzas, cooked to perfection inside the wood-burning oven. Italian specialties including paninis and pastas make it a favorite for lunch or dinner. Just inside the restaurant, guests will find a selection of beers. The Mill Coffee & Sweets ––features coffees, lattes, mochas and espressos made from organic and fair-trade beans roasted in Virginia. The ice cream menu offers locally made flavors that will change each season. The Mill also features one of the area’s widest selections of freshly baked breads.
